guest No one knows when the next bit of good news will come. How many people anticipated Consumer Reports' review or the NHTSA report on safety? Something will come out that we don't expect....
1/1/2015
guest As long as it is a 'white swan' event and not a black one...I will be happy.
1/1/2015
guest Managed to (nearly) call the bottom today, picking up another block of stock at $134.52. Here's hoping that it's uphill from here...
1/1/2015
guest Oh, I did. More than once. Always on days when morale was down. And I posted it here every time. Just check

1/1/2015
guest Agreed. When the third fire hit the forum I had an 'holy s**t' reaction and immediately sold 80% of my position in TSLA. Ok, that qualifies me as a 'weak long' (I prefer someone who is guarding his gains..but). Both times it has dipped to below $135 I have bought back in small quantities. It does 'feel' like a double bottom dip but it also 'felt' like we would see $200 pretty easily by Jan 1, 2014. So, I will continue to nibble back in even if it means I miss a big surge.
1/1/2015
guest Now I think it will be February before we see $200. Just after the next earnings call.
1/1/2015
guest Back on the subject of the igornance of the media, one of the hosts of Bloomberg Surveillance said this morning that the chrome book charger recall is just like the "problem" with the Model S. She should be fire for a statement like that. Its wrong on so many different levels. They can't understand that there is no problem with the Model S!
1/1/2015
guest No need for a separate chat thread I guess no posts now in a whole day. I bought back covered calls I sold in August today so that makes me slightly more bullish. I'm happy I got most that premium and I still have Tesla shares. I would have fared better selling the stock outright at this point but I don't think that will keep me from doing it again the next time the stock is up there.

1/1/2015
guest So anyone seeing a Tesla Lunch Reversal today?
1/1/2015
guest Sure hope there is oneThe 11AM one has already passed and instead the slow drop lower kept going. We've seen almost the full daily volume of 10M already traded before lunch and I can't see any substantial news that could have explained the high volume price action here...

1/1/2015
guest Well....this sucks.......
1/1/2015
guest Yep, full steam...
1/1/2015
guest I kind of disagree. However far down TSLA wants to go, just please let it get there quickly. Then we can start some positive momentum again and revive at least our longer term options. To me, the worst case scenario would be for the stock to stagnate in the 130's. I'll go scrounging between the cushions for some cash to buy in if we get near $100, but if it bounces upward before I buy in more, I'll have no problem with that.
1/1/2015
guest Hope dies last..... but I wasn't expecting such a big drop....I really thought we would recover to above 135$ at least.....
The lunchtime reversal might still happen but at this point it's not looking good at all...we are in oversold territory IMHO....but we have been oversold since 160$ for me :crying:
1/1/2015

That might have something to do with the selling. People may be interpreting this as another indication of battery supply issues...
1/1/2015
guest I took that as good news. Guess the street disagrees.
1/1/2015
guest TLR....now or never?
1/1/2015
guest Since this is the social chat thread and since everybody is guessing why TSLA is tanking so hard now, let me add my baseless guess too ;-)
1. A barrage of negative news and a relative shortage of rebuttals to misunderstandings and outright lies.
2. As part of #1, an increasing number of shameless firetruck chasers flinging their stuff about.
3. As Tesla has been gaining ground at the cost of fossil giants, they are slowly starting to react (cf #1 & #2).
4. As part of #3, maybe the genious move into Korea may have rattled some giants' cage too hard.
Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) Considers Expanding Into Korea - TheStreet
1/1/2015
guest Let's be positive: if one thing is getting really clear and understood by everyone and even by those bashing the stock, and it shows again in the article covering the possible expansion in Korea, it's that Tesla is production constrained. In other words, no one is using the argument that demanding will collapse. I think any good news on battery supply would be welcome to start reversing the trend...
1/1/2015
guest Please let this be the TLR......
1/1/2015
guest After following TSLA closely since February, my conclusion is that logic is only loosely tied to the stock price. On the way up, it went up because of "momentum" - people wanted to make money on the stock regardless of what it was actually worth. Now I think shorts are making money on the stock regardless of what it is actually worth. The good news is that if this is driven by shorts it creates demand to buy since shorts need to cover their position at some point. Once we get upward momentum, covering shorts will help to maintain that momentum.
1/1/2015
guest Actually, thanks to *that* VIN chart people were flogging before Q3, I've seen dozens of people arguing that demand is collapsing.
1/1/2015
guest I concur with your conclusion. That strengthens Gtoffo's argument here: Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - Page 1305
1/1/2015
guest I'm also seeing more and more posts pulled from this forum and used for the bear argument. Cherry picking data and information and using it to try and damage. Conversely, I don't see many posts being pulled from this forum and used for the bull agrument. It's entirely fascinating what the human will do to support a negative perspective and trash another (person, company, thing), that they then feel no need to do to support a positive perspective.
1/1/2015
guest Well, it feels like TSLA is back to where it was before the mass production started. TSLA against the world's naysayers. I am more familiar with how to maneuver in this environment.
1/1/2015
guest I think a lot of questions without answers are going to continue to hammer this stock. For whatever reason (and Tesla's silence is deafening), they disabled the lowering of the car at high speeds. Who's to say the touchscreen isn't the next thing that Tesla will disable? What if the NHTSA says it needs to be turned off? Will they push an update out that disables it? This "on the fly" update thing is great, but maybe it's too big-brother-y? Plus the sudden change in ranger service/loaners, where loaners are only provided within 50 miles of the service centers? If true, Tesla is going from "we'll do anything for you, our customer" to "we'll do some things for some and not for others."
I'm on the sidelines until things look more promising. If Tesla isn't committed to me, the customer, then who's to say my next Electric Car won't be an Audi (if they come out with something as good)?
1/1/2015
guest I find disabling the use of the touchscreen not possible. It fits along the lines of using the radio and stuff, which conventional cars are free of being used. Besides, the touchscreen is the sole control of basic functions of the car, am I right?
1/1/2015
guest What if NHTSA tells Telsa they have to do it, or make it only control the A/C and radio.
Just a thought.

1/1/2015
guest Nasdaq sell-off......great!
1/1/2015
guest Not going to happen. There are a lot of cars with touch screen stuff for more than A/C and radio. Not nearly at the level of Tesla, but it's all over the car industry.
1/1/2015
guest Last week the same response would have been given about disabling the lowering of the car. I'm not saying they're going to disable the Nav screen. I'm saying that Tesla will disable features without notification, is disturbing.
1/1/2015
guest Uhm. What do you mean, exactly? I can see the sky is falling, but is all of Nasdaq? That's not good, right?
1/1/2015
guest The nasdaq is down big time....down more than 1%. I think that is why Tesla dropped in the first place. People started talking about "the nasdaq bubble" and the fact that a lot of tech stocks are way overvalued. Hence the sell-off. Blame the Snapchats of the world.
1/1/2015
guest What is with the media's obsession with the Q3 '13 Non GAAP results? Don't they know that analyst expect Tesla to be GAAP EPS positive from 2014 on?

1/1/2015
guest Yep, looks like it's going to be a big volume day.
The key will be of TSLA can break through the $133 level and stay above.
1/1/2015
guest $133 is pretty far up there for TSLA to reach today. Perhaps it'll take the remainder of the week?
1/1/2015
guest WTF, when can we get a break? Now that Tesla is finally up, SCTY and the rest of the gang down and my portfolio still red for the day...

1/1/2015
guest I bought for the first time in months this morning. Added 15%. Free money from the paranoids.
1/1/2015
guest Yeah me too. But we are at double bottom. Tomorrow will decide whether yesterday was sentimentshift if it closes green.
1/1/2015
guest I bought back 25% of my original position yesterday, of course I timed it horribly but still, TSLA under $130 sounded good to me. I was all in previously with all available cash and that got to be a bit stressful, I'm more comfortable with my smaller position and won't worry about the short term as much, though I always seem to be in a better mood when TSLA goes up.
1/1/2015
guest i think we are at the bottom or close to the theoretical bottom. no one can predict the stocks future with 100% accuracy, but regardless, the upside possibilities now exceed the downside risk. you are more likely to miss out on a huge runup in the share price than take a 50% loss from here. i just bought some now.
1/1/2015
guest This thread is quiet. I don't care how others and the moderators decide to separate threads, I read them all, just makes it more work. I'm probably not alone on this, but I have a hard time not having some skin in the game when it comes to tsla. I sat on the sidelines for about a week and couldn't wait any longer. I'm not "all in" like I was before, which wasn't that smart to begin with, but im comfortable with my current position even though I'm in the red on my latest purchase. I waste way to much time on TMC but I wouldn't have it any other way.
1/1/2015
guest Yeah, I've been a little put off by tesla recently because of the pain of losing so much so quickly. I sold 90% of my tesla a little higher than we are right now, after losing a lot of money in the fall from 135 to here. On the good side, the volume was strong and things seem to be stabilized. I am like you, sub, and I couldn't stay away once the price stabilized. With how tight the trading range was today, it seems like we might see a large swing in one direction or the other soon.
1/1/2015
guest It's not fun to have this price drop, but until this week, I never thought I'd be buying more TSLA. I've added over 17% to my holdings which had a previous ASP of 92. I'm really not worried by this drop. I have low expenses and so live off little money. It's almost all in Tesla and solar. The future is bright. I'm a new investor, but not really feeling the panic going around... Come on bears, try a little harder to scare us
1/1/2015
guest I jumped in a little too soon. I will need to hold my stake for really good news. At the worst, I will hold until the next quarters spectacular numbers drive the price back up.

1/1/2015
guest Apparently, it's two recalls in one. That's seven since it was redesigned in 2013 (we're still in 2013, btw). 13 fires (not due to collision) so far because of it. Can you imagine if the Model S had that track record? People would be burning Elon in effigy. Ridiculous. If anyone is worried about the NHTSA investigation, this should be reassuring.

Thank you everyone for sharing your investing strategies and thoughts. I have learned way more here than from any of the books I have read. On top of that it's real time, which you can not get in the books.
We are happy to be going to our thanksgiving dinner in our new Model S because of everything all of you have shared.
1/1/2015
guest Happy Thanksgiving to all.
This year has been a massive rush, with highs and lows, mostly highs. I am glad we have been able to band together and help each other invest in TSLA and in Solar, the alternative energy theme. The year is still not over. Look forward to ending it with my new found friends here and toasting to next year. Thank you and an enjoyable and safe Thanksgiving to all of you!

guest I am thankful there is someone in this world with the means and the drive to make it a better place and to all the contributors here for some educational and entertaining reading.
1/1/2015
guest Haha giving rides at thanksgiving I made all of the men giggle like school girls. The only one I let drive it was my father-in-law.
My wife's grandfather (84) knew nothing about the car not the make or anything but that it was electric. I mashed the pedal and his eyes lit up and he said "that's an electric motor for you, full torque from the start, no winding up." Then he proceeded to tell everyone in the car how far ahead of his time Nikola Tesla was. I told him the company that makes this car was named after him and designed from his ideas and he was amazed. He then said he wanted to get one.

1/1/2015

guest Looks like the bot is turned back on today. Same 1 hour into trading we have seen before. Wonder where they are getting the shares to short?
1/1/2015
guest Well SpaceX has resolved the anomalies and are now going to try to launch tomorrow. No other posts today and I'm not sure what else to talk about...
1/1/2015
guest Yeah that bot.
I sometimes wish I have the clout to start a hedge fund whose sole purpose is to profit off of bots like that. They are easy to detect and are allowed to run rampant because no ome dares to go against them.
1/1/2015
guest What proof is there of the existence of this "bot"?
1/1/2015
guest Speculation at appropriately timed large sales when the volume thins out, and the selling quickly catches stop losses. I don't have a ton of experience but it doesn't look like regular selling because it appears to attempt to drop the price as far as possible with as little sale as possible. But again- speculation on my part.
1/1/2015
guest I don't know if this "bot" exists or not, but using stop losses is the dumbest thing you can do when investing.
If you buy a stock and it goes down, you should be buying more and not selling at a loss. If you liked the company at $X then you should love it at a fraction of $X.
I hardly ever use stop losses; virtually never.
1/1/2015
guest If this bot exists (and I agree it looks that way) it's clearly market manipulation and hence illegal. Luvb2b, you have contacts, right?
1/1/2015
guest This is starting to feel like the good ol' days of June again.
1/1/2015
guest in the past those were all options related inquiries which went to the options exchanges, opra, etc. imagine at that time it was millions of shares of tesla options being predictably traded and exercised by apparently two or more colluding parties who had no interest other than moving shares from point a to point b.
to the best of my knowledge, no regulatory actions were ever taken.
if they missed that, good luck getting them to look into this "bot". that's my 2c.
1/1/2015
guest Looks like shares available to short are drying up this morning, is that putting any upward pressure on the lending rate?
1/1/2015
guest I know that you are hoping for the lending rate to go up so that you can lend out your shares, but it will not go up. If shares available to short are drying up today that is because TSLA is going up and short sellers are getting margin calls, longs are calling back their shares to take profits, etc.
The lending rate will not go up unless there is really bad negative news that could threaten the company into bankruptcy or other failure. The only way that you are going to get the lending rate to go up is if all of a sudden everybody and their mother wants to short TSLA because it is a slam dunk case. This will not happen again unless the stock starts tanking extremely hard (for some good reason).
As a long TSLA holder, I don't think you want that to happen. If TSLA continues a slow and steady climb then you will not see lending rates to go up above the current 1% or whatever it is. You are not going to see double digit lending rates anytime soon. Like I said it is a double edged sword, you will not get good lending rates with a rising share price. Unless of course there is a VW-like short-squeeze, in which case you would be 10x better off selling the shares at a profit than lending them out for a high interest rate that will only last a day or two.
That 85% lending rate in the beginning of the year was an anomaly and it will not happen again without good reason.
If you want to lend your shares, then you are going to have to live with a few hundred basis points at best. Not worth it IMO: all you are doing is increasing TSLA supply and putting downward pressure on the stock.
1/1/2015
guest If you think my position has a material effect on the stock you are mistaken. I don't think we'll reach 85% again, but 5% would be nice.
1/1/2015
guest It is one of those things that if everybody thought that way then...
Do you vote? (don't answer that) Why do you vote if one vote doesn't change anything? Same thing goes for the stock market, it is a herd mentality. If no one were to lend out any TSLA shares, or if everyone recalled their shares tomorrow then the stock would go up a few hundred percent in a day. One person doesn't make a difference, but if others follow your idea here then it will make a huge difference and cause TSLA's share price to go down (or not up as much) and everyone who lent out the shares will pay the price.
Every share counts.
If there is a smaller amount of shares to short today, that is because brokerages do not want you to short TSLA now that it is potentially breaking out. It is not because all of a sudden everyone wants to short and used up all of the shares available. In this case lending rate will go down if anything and not up.
1/1/2015
guest I gave my policeman uncle a ride over thanksgiving(he drove). He made it go very fast... I told him I thought his force should use model S as a money saving measure, and he said if they had a sedan-with-a-trunk or an SUV he would totally pitch the idea.
- - - Updated - - -
I agree. However, I like stop losses a lot if I am ready to sell something at market. Instead of doing that, I set a stop loss at some small 0.5% limit below market. That way if it wants to prove me wrong and zoom to the moon it can do that as well. Later I can raise it again if I still want to sell. I have had some very nice surprises when I realized a few days later I didn't trigger.
1/1/2015
guest So if I get to 100 posts does that make me a member? I have to say with the price at $142 the pullback is a good thing for me. I had sold covered calls and was able to buy them back when we were down in the 120s. Now we watch all over again I suppose. So far I have been able to make a little extra money from volatility since I only buy long-term calls and sell medium-term covered calls. I will probably sell covered call again at some point because I sort of want to cut my position in half but only if I am selling at record highs.
1/1/2015
guest Mario just got a reply from Elon on Twitter....... I would print that and hang it on my wall  congrats on the new car! And first in Estonia! (I must come visit you in Tallinn....a truly wonderful city!)
1/1/2015
guest I remember at the beginning of the bots taking over, there was a case where one of the hedge funds sued two guys who took advantage of the bots. The two guys ended up getting jailed.
So basically, if I saw the bots predicability and trade against it to make it lose money, i will end up in jail. That's why the bots are unstoppable.
1/1/2015
guest That makes no sense! Why is LE protecting bots and hedge fund managers and not the people that suffer from the bots actions? What is illegal about trading against bots if you can figure them out?
1/1/2015
guest Funny how all the "lurkers" who just happened to decide to start posting during the fires are nowhere to be found today.
1/1/2015
guest You and I both know. Money without power to protect it means no money. In this case the hedge fund has both money and power and the two guys were just programmers with no connections.
1/1/2015
guest Wow, I really thought TSLA wouldn't make any real moves until they provided 2014 guidance, the NHTSA report was released, or some big reveal on the gigafactory. I bailed out of most of my holdings right around $145 before and Dec 8th is the day I can buy back in without hitting the wash sale rule. Things looked good for me to get back in at or under where I'd left, until today.
Ah well.

guest It's been a wild year. Thank you for those of you who've been here since the beginning. Thanks to all those people who contributed in giving me the equivalent of engineer porn to satisfy me in a field I do not understand. We've come a long way this year and the narrative is no longer about whether or not Tesla can even make a car from first principals but how much car Tesla can sell. Most impressive is when the biggest discussion centers around if Tesla is the safest car. Yes =$200, No = $120.
There are few chances in life where you can participate in something revolutionary like this and I am happy that I get to. I also worked with a few welding contractors that touched Tesla so in a sense, I get to participate in the work. Being in the middle of the action is probably the only way the year can be better. But I blame that on my own incompetence.
This ride has taught me a lot and i showed myself that I have graduated to a mature investor who can really claim my battle scars as true stories. 2008 was my final exam, Tesla was my graduation. Have a nice holiday season.

guest I grabbed a few more shares for my long position this morning when it dipped to $146. I was considering waiting another day to see if it might dip back into the 130's. Glad I didn't wait! Wasn't expecting it to shoot up to $153.

guest Prediction headlines for today: "Tesla opens lower on reports of new fire"
Don't you hate this !$&@ nonsense!Wished the government would do more against timed releases of misleading information with the only purpose to bring down the stock. Why are these things never getting investigated with proof layed out for everyone to see and severe punishments for those who benefit at the expense of the rest.

guest I just bought some Dec 27 $147 options several minutes ago. I find it hilarious that since I bought them the stock is up 0.5% and my options are up 20%.

Stock went down about 0.1% and my options lost 10% in value. Funny how volatility works with options. You reall have to catch falling knives when buying and sell on the up slope.
