Many people mistake him for a Saint Bernard because of his unusal head markings. He is actually a Newfoundland (Landseer to be exact).

We were driving south on I-5 last Friday, headed to Las Vegas, when we saw this Model S (somewhere just north of Harris Ranch). It is my first sighting in the wild (with the exception of the easy pickings at the Supercharger in Folsom). Wonder if this guy just picked it up at the factory and was trailering it home. I also wonder where he was headed that required a trailer. Pretty much everything in So. Cal. can be reached by just driving it home from the factory.

Now I'm just waiting for my first sighting of a Model S with its wheels on the ground.

There was a quick shot of a Model S on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight (with Elon getting out of it). He was a guest on the show. Mostly talked and joked about SpaceX.

That's a DS taking a car to an awaiting owner - same exact type of trailer my DS used to deliver my car to me here in WA state. I'm guessing Tesla bought/built a bunch for each service center. Or at least the service centers in states that allow personal delivery.
  • 1/1/2015

I don't think they are doing personal delivery in Georgia yet. But the service center has one of those trailers also. I think Tesla just bought a bunch of them for all their service needs.

Today heading northbound I-5, spotted 4 Ss going south - 2 gray, one white, one black - and a car carrier full of 'em, as well. No one using superchargers either at Tejon or Harris Ranch as we passed. Sadly, no pics.

Saw a middle-aged gentleman and a female passenger (who was lit by the familiar glow of a LCD screen) stuck on I-94S headed into the city around 6:30pm. Temp plates.

On Sunday Feb 17 I spotted Beta #59 at Diamond Peak. I wonder where they charged up because I didn't see them at the Hyatt and there's not many public options around there.

Ok here is one that is NOT west coast!! lol This is my first Model S sighting ever (outside of the showroom in NYC). This occurred about 30 minutes ago (7:00am) on the EAST COAST in NEW JERSEY heading north on 295 at exit 65. (Note: this is 295 and not NJTurnpike, in other words this was not someone driving through the state from DE to Milford, but rather a local driver! NJ plates too obviously). Sadly, they were only going the speed limit (65mph) you range efficient driver, how dare you? LOL I wonder who this is? Any of you guys?

There were two betas at the Hyatt after you left. I didn't note the numbers, but I think one of them was #59. Here's a pic of the valet moving one of them (who forgot their charge cable anyway) so that I could plug mine back in. Afterwards, he asked me to point out the charge level on the dashboard - it sounded like the valets were helping the two cars share the one connector.

I wasn't fast enough to get a pic, but at 18:45 tonight here in Albuquerque I saw a dark colored S (could have been black, blue, or green) going eastbound on Alameda under I-25 as I was going west. I noticed the distinctive headlights, then the taillights after it passed. It still had the "Zero Emissions" tag. Are you on TMC?

The picture was rotated 90 degrees, so he joked that that was some "banked (sloped) curve"...

because the image's metadata contains enough info so that some software will present it right side up and they don't know that it will be rotated when they post it ... but that info is ignored when presented here.

Only posting because it's first one I've seen "in the wild" and I'm sure one of the very few in Central Virginia. Saw a blue one in Charlottesville yesterday on 250 bypass. Sorry no pics, it was going the other way. Didn't have plates, so must be fairly new.

Latest spotting for me was a blue one on 19's today at a bicycle race SW of Seattle (Mason Lake to be precise). I was wondering if someone in the local cycling community might be among the early adopters! Great to see!

    Cheers!

Had my racing days and Tesla driving days lined up that could have been me. Boy did I hate the Mason Lake series... nothing like riding around for 50 miles in 40 degree rain. At least the weather was ok this weekend.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
We definitely lucked out on the weather yesterday! One of the nicest days I can remember for the Mason series in the last ten years. Not a drop of rain, mostly sunny and even very little wind. I don't ever recall having trouble seeing in the last few miles of the lap because of wearing dark lenses and the flickering light of the sun shining through the trees.

Sorry for the off topic bike race talk. I'll be sure to stop and introduce myself the next time I see this fellow bike racer in their S!

    Cheers!

Got to see my first S in the wild *with kids riding in the back in the rear-facing seats* on Embarcadero Rd in Palo Alto. A blue or black S (couldn't tell in the twilight) that didn't have plates yet. Exchanged waves with the little ones who were craning their necks to see through the glass :)

I've seen a number in the Baltimore area over the past few months:
    1. November: signature red; no plates. Driving south on the JFX.
    2. December: signature red; tinted windows. Timonium fairgrounds--festival of trees.
    3. January: silver; Virginia plates. 95N--just north of Columbia, MD
    4. Early Feb: Black; no plates. York Rd--just north of Cranbrook RD.
    5. Last week: gray. South on the JFX stuck in traffic.
    6. Me. Got my pearl white two weeks ago--and loving it!

Finally saw my first in the wild, driving into Austin airport. Unusual as he had California plates, driving in Texas. His was blue (maybe black, hard to tell). Pretty cool to have 2 driving along together! I don't know if he had the suspension at very low, but the Model S sure hugs the ground. Looks awesome.

I picked up my Model S this past Saturday at the Tesla store in Westchester, NY. I live in a small town in coastal Connecticut where expensive/exotic cars are quite uncommon. In fact, I was almost certain that I had the only one in town, and probably would for quite some time. So, on Sunday my wife and I went out for brunch with friends who were interested in seeing the car. Partway through the meal, my wife says "Hey, there's a guy at the bar wearing a Tesla cap!" I turned around and there he was. So, as we were getting ready to leave I approached him and asked what the significance of the cap was. He replied "Tesla is the name of a new car, have you heard of it?" I responded that I had picked mine up the day before, and he pointed to the gentleman next to him and said "He got his last week!" I inquired about the color (black/black; mine is grey/tan), we talked some more and we left.

OK, so much for the exclusivity I was so excited about. We walk out to my car and find there is a red Model S parked right behind me! At first I think it belongs to the fellow in the restaurant and realize, no, his is black. At that, the owner of the red car approaches and I compliment him on his car and ask when he got it. He says August. I commented that was certainly one of the earliest cars delivered. He said "Well, my son is the designer!" Turns out this was Frank von Holzhausen, father of Franz. Talk about coincidences! We talked for a bit and and sent my compliments to his son.

A very interesting day. Three Model S's within ten minutes in this modest little town. Maybe a portent of things to come? (wish I had taken photos)

I think I spotted EfxJim coming out of Universal last week! It was a Dolphin Grey Model S, and I think I remember him posting that he works there. I was right behind him in my white MSP and tried to catch up as I was leaving for the day, but traffic thwarted my efforts.

Big time. I feel like I'm on a color scavenger hunt with the variety I've seen.

1 & 2 were likely me...I know where I parked at the Festival of Trees....far, far away given the car was only a few weeks old.

I've yet to see an S around my town (even though I know from the Tesla forum that there are at least two)...I've yet to see one driving into/out of NYC (which I've done three times in the last two months)...And I've yet to see one driving around NYC while I've been there. However, I finally saw one parked at a garage in SoHo, a week ago tonight. Black & Tan, 19" wheels, NY plates...Any of you guys? Thankfully it wasn't charging, so I could :) Would have been fun to have met the driver though. And, come summertime where I live, I'm guess that that Model S are going to be like flies...Give all the Range Rovers a run for their money (at least in popularity...We all know there's no contest in speed).

I think it looks cool but honestly if I didn't know what it was I wouldn't even given it a second look. I would have just thought it was some run of the mill 50-60k car which has good pros too imo. All that being said I would still want one thats why I'm on here and heck after lurking for awhile was so excited to see one I had to join just to post my personal  reaction.

The grey could have been me, I've got a grey/grey/grey (paint/interior/wheels) and I generally park at the 5th/Alder garage. I think that's one of the main reasons I check this thread, because I'm narcissistic enough to wonder if my car has been spotted :)

    Glad it wasn't a student!

I saw my first MS on the road today and it was only 1 block from my home. I was on my way back home this afternoon and the black MS passed the other way. We live in a fairly isolated suburb - half acre to 1 acre zoning, so there isn't a high density of cars.

LOL. My wife always asks me in an annoyed tone; "what are you DOING on there." I always reply with something esoteric such as "I'm doing research on battery chemistry." Or, "I'm doing research on vampire loads in sleep mode." She just gives me that "I married a goofball but I love him" smile.

Isn't your wife a psychiatrist? Is goofball a psychiatric technical term? Or yet another term for a shrink??? :)
  • 1/1/2015

I don't think "goofball" has found it's way into the DSM-IV which is this ridiculously large book she carries around that has everything that can be psychologically wrong with a person. There's also "goofy goofball" which seems to be a slightly more serious condition.

Disclaimer: Not a psychiatrist. She's what my redneck friends call a "book doctor." PhD Clinical Psychologist. Brilliant woman. Really. Many lifetimes ahead of me in so many ways.

BUT WE DIGRESS! Back to random sightings. Looks as though I'm not gonna have one before my MS arrives.

I saw a fully loaded car carrier carrying some gray, blue, white and black MSes on I-5S just south of Sacramento. Kind of weird to see it there as it's nowhere near the factory. My only guess is that maybe they dropped one off in Sacto, and found it more cost effective to run some cars south and east by going north first.

Apologies for not getting the VINs for anybody. My wife didn't approve of my plan to jump from our SUV to the carrier to get this vital info. Maybe next time I'll have a willing co-pilot to help with my Fast and Furious maneuver. :)

I'm still waiting for my power line install so was charging at Porter Square shopping center in Cambridge. When I returned to the car I found a blue Performance with gray wheels parked (but not charging, not sure if that's kosher) next to me. Baby and toddler seats inside. Later saw it go by the other direction towards Arlington on Mass Ave. My third sighting in the wild.

    a. Those are amazingly great parking spaces. That mall needs double the parking it has, so it's great to see a couple of spots for EVs anywhere.
    b. The other owner clearly doesn't read these boards, or he'd have one of those nice EV plates the state hands out for no extra cost.

Thanks, but it's just a quick phone camera snap from my Roadster. I could have posted it in the Roadster thread "What did you park next to?"

Model S's are all over Northern CA. Last Thursday I parked next to one (both it and I take more than one spot to prevent dings), then passed two on the highway, and then saw one heading the other direction on the same highway.

Just for the record, btw, out of dozens of encounters I've had exactly one Model S driver wave back at me.

  • 1/1/2015

It is "unsightly" and destructive, mounting below the nose via wire ties is "cleaner".
Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
No, just a lot of debate about how/whether to mount front plates. In MA they are required by law, and to pass initial inspection. I had them zip-tie the plate holder in front of the grille and was going to take it off after inspection and try my luck with the cops, but decided I like having the EV statement on both ends. Tesla doesn't endorse that placement because it impedes some airflow, but since I'm not in Texas or Arizona I'm not too worried. Robert had his mounted in the standard spot like the P85 in the photo, drilling through the nose cone. He likes that the plate is the first thing to get scratched against a wall or bumper.

    1. Walking to work, I passed a Signature Red Model S that is regularly parked at a local business.
    2. Driving north on Central Expressway, I saw a white (pearl white?) Performance Model S with spoiler.
    3. On 101 North, I saw a blue (black?) Model S w/19" wheels exiting near Whipple.
    4. Back home in Belmont, I passed a grey (I think) Model S that was getting ready to turn onto Ralston.

Bonus round: Today at lunch, a blue Model S was parked at the Shoreline golf course.

You live in the San Francisco Bay area and this is only the 2nd sighting of a Model S? Where do you live? I think I've seen at least 3-4 every day for the last monh. There are at least 7 that park in the same 2 blocks as I do in Palo Alto.

I only work there occasionally. That was Spielberg you saw! I was told he has the exact car I have.

I live in San Jose and work in Sunnyvale, and only see a Model S every few days (today I saw 2 white ones), but haven't only seen maybe 1 or 2 the rest of the week.

I think if you are on the peninsula, then you'll see a lot. All the money is there. Us poor folk in the south bay don't get that many sightings. :)

Lucky for me, I'm first in my neighborhood and first at our field sales office. I have to start supporting the big G soon, so I'm sure my MS sightings will increase exponentially at that point.

Nearly every weekday I walk about 15 mins each way to work through San Francisco's Financial District. Since the Model S came out, I can probably still count on the fingers of one hand the number of MS's I've seen.

The thing is, SF's FiDi isn't exactly hurting for money. A lot of wealthy people work there--bankers, executives, engineers--and many of them are eco-concious. I see too many Benzes, Bimmers, and Porsches to count, along with the occasional Auston Martin or Mazerati. I even see Ferraris once in a while, and I've probably seen more of those MS's over the past year.

Meanwhile the Peninsula seems to be rife with Teslas.

What's up with San Francisco? I thought I'd be seeing multiple MS's per day by now.

Had a little fun with another Model S on the road today on 295 North in NJ. I've seen him once before and upped a photo then, but I was driving a crappy loaner car waiting for my S (that thing didn't even have cruise control....such torture!!!). Now that I have my S, I pulled up next to him, honked my horn, and we both took off like a bat out of hell LOL. probably was a sight to see for everyone else on the road - two black Model S's gunning down the road. Model S's are a very rare sight around here. He's the only other S I've ever seen in the wild. Although my tint guy told me that after he posted pics of tinting my car, another Model S owner saw the pics on facebook and really liked it and contacted him to tint his car too. So slowly but surely they are cropping up on the East ;)

Yeah, I see at least four during my commute everyday, I stopped counting. And there are already 7 Model S parked at my company, compared to 11 Chevy Volts and 23 Leafs. Things are looking good for Tesla!

see that's just a different world right there.

again, Californians should probably just stop frequenting this thread...

It's true. California is definitely EV central. Here's the EV section at one of the parking lots at my work. On this particular day I counted 7 Leafs, 4 Volts, 3 Plug-in Prius, 3 Model S and a roadster.

I think that picture is impressive even for Cali. Surprised some spaces were open - are the charging stations not free? Or is everyone really good about moving cars out and sharing?

Saw a red performance Sig ripping down I290 with license plate "ZERO MPG." They were kind enough to slow down so my nonperformance 85 could catch up and give the old thumbs up.

In SF, for me it depends a lot on the part of the city. In the last two weeks or so, I've seen more than ever before in SF, one in Marina, one twice in Mission, two at the Embarcadero Ferry Building, one close to the Golden Gate bridge along the coast, and one or two on Hwy 1.

I see too many S's to bother posting sightings anymore. But I thought it was fun to find this right behind me on the freeway the other morning.
