Firmware 7.1 part 6

So, a question from someone with limited tech experience: If my car asks for it before your car does mine get it first? Strength of wifi connection? Essentially, how do you think TM decides the order to send it out? Thanks

I'm not installing mine ... To bad I can't give it to someone else!

I have received updates early and late compared to other people. so, probably not by VIN, date of purchase. I go by firmware engineers sitting with a dartboard.

I know you have been steadfast in not installing recent downloads. ..what version are you running?

    The latest 6.2 build.

So how does my car "know" to send the request? Or do they check in with the mothership every day and then once the package is ready it comes down the pipe? So to speak.

I wonder if the newer VINs (100,000+) have some different hardware or something? It appears that no Xs have gotten it either, which would be consistent with that theory, assuming X and S hardware are in sync.

Since Cottonwood must not have seen the above comment by susteki yet, I'll step in and point out, by bolding the relevant part of Cottonwood's comment, that he said nothing whatsoever to indicate that he updated the firmware while supercharging.

Interesting theory. Not sure if it is correct..But, TM has been know to add hardware without telling the purchaser that they have something new (ex: early radar/US sensors ). We know to get truly AD driving you will need more cameras/radar/sensors ( per EM blog today ). Could some Ss and Xs have some of these sensors??? Doubt it, but possible.

My speculation (actually WAG): The wiring harnesses may be in place for additional cameras (like the Mobeleye 3 camera or 8 camera systems) and 4 corner radar. Retrofitting the cameras and radar would be relatively easy versus running all the wiring.

As the screen you included showed, there was a disclaimer about US vehicles only. Others have said in other threads that the Homelink feature is only working through the summoning. Summoning is only in the US, so the note about Homelink control being for US cars only would be consistent with that.

So since your non-AP car can't be summoned, it also can't control Homelink.

I doubt it. I know the early AP hardware is seen as a generous move, but personally I think it was released in order to crowd-source ultra-precise road maps before the public release of AP.

    Probably..hence why I call it my WAG:wink:

I don't know for sure. It's quite possible that the packages are created in order, or not. There doesn't appear to be a wifi or cell preference, either.

The car is always checking for updates periodically, although I don't know on what time scale. It appears rebooting the 17" screen causes it to check for an update once it's booted, but that probably doesn't actually help since the servers still have the make the package and such and the car probably already requested that on its own.

With map updates it definitely doesn't pull those over the cell connection and requires WiFi it looks like...

If you look at this table from the 7.0 firmware tracker, you can see that for some odd reason we have 0.9% of the 60k VINs entering data in the tracker, but only 0.3 and 0.2%, respectively, of the 100k and 110k VINs. So the sample size in the higher VINs appears to be lower. If you have a VIN 100k and up and are reading this... please add your data to the tracker - even if it is just for the last 7.0 update.

But having said all that - even with 3-5x more people in the 60k range reporting, we still should have gotten a hand full of reports for the 100k+ VINs in the 7.1 tracker. So there is indeed a chance that they are predominantly pushing this to VINs below 100k

Possibly the value is a number of things:
    - Simply putting it out there for people to test and report their experience.
    - Hearing your suggestions and those of others of how you would like it to work.
    - Watching for unanticipated mishaps.

Those are a few things. It seems that those who develop software are generally pretty good at anticipating consequences of actions and probable preferences, etc. However, it is the user and the real life experiences that will matter in the end. We collectively provide information on lots of user experience, but few of us are experts at software development. Those who are doing the software engineering have their minds full of very technical problems/solutions on esoteric issues, but are not necessarily the most adept at anticipating subtle real-world eventualities.

So it's a game in which we are all participants, from our own angles.

still waiting for my update. For the ones that got it, any changes on the trip planner ? someone said that it now recommends an average speed to hit the estimated mile range and optimize speed vs. charging time. Sounds like a very good feature if true, any more info on that ? can someone post screenshots or comment ? (if this exists of course)

Why all the negativity? By reading the release notes I found several improvements, including some you mentioned, that are definitely worthwhile a release even without the summon feature.

But of course, there is always going to be a subset of people who like to complain

Dirk didn't say this explicitly, but the tracker will allow you to backdate your entries. So if you are entering information on an old firmware update, you can enter the date that you actually received it. If you've been keeping records, you could go back and enter more than one old update, if you so desired.

There are simply more users in the 60k area. This might just have to do with the timing of that site coming online. Needs more advertising to Tesla owners.

Am I right to assume that you know that the EYE-Q-3 chip now in Tesla cars is capable of all those things you mentioned Mercedes is working on and many, many more but they are not turned on yet? Yes, Tesla will run into a hardware wall with the MS at some point, but not yet, or even soon. The main obstacle seems to be full autonomy. As long as the human is there, it has all the sensing it needs for many more improvements. And, even though at some point new hardware will certainly be essential, and even though present hardware cannot be retro-fitted to pre-AP Teslas, that does not mean for sure that the present AP cars cannot be retrofitted with at least some future hardware. Consider that it is just as important to Tesla as it is to us to be able to use the 60K or more AP vehicles for more intensive testing than present hardware allows. Tesla always looks to the future in their current production. They certainly would have been aware that the MS (MX, same hardware) would have to do them at least for another two years (probably 4 years to get to volume). They would have planned for that.

I was really hoping for the power meter shown in one of the slides at the version 7 press event. At the time, many thought since it was not the version 7.0 power meter that it was likely to be the version 7.1 power meter. I guess I can keep hoping the change gets made eventually.

Hey, I'm German by birth, complaining is our national past time.

That said... there are plenty of people here who will relentlessly cheer every word Elon says, any thing Elon does, every change Tesla pushes to our cars. I feel that someone needs to occasionally speak up and try to balance things a bit more. And while I agree that the release notes list a ton of improvements for AP cars, I'd say that for non-AP cars (still about half the installed base) the pickings are slim. Driver door only opening. Spotify (Europe only). Other than that... not much comes to mind.
People get very excited about the shiny stuff. Which is why Tesla is focusing on that (and the fact that MB is pushing ahead with their version of autopilot and will have something competitive later this year certainly makes it reasonable for Tesla to continue to push). I just wish they wouldn't completely ignore the long list of issues that have been reported for a long time (and some of which Elon acknowledged and promised fixes for in 7.1 which AFAIK haven't materialized.

So that's why I'm maybe not quite as positive as apparently some people believe is required...

Hey, should I add a standard disclaimer to my signature? Instead of the usual "this post is copytighted... bla bla bla" I could write something like "even if my post may sound like I am not 100% excited 100% of the time, I still love my car and own TSLA shares"?

    - - - Updated - - -

Yeah, that would be a big step in the right direction... let's keep hoping. Maybe in 9.4?
Oh wait, was that too negative again? Ok. Maybe in 8.3?

I don't believe any of the beta software images that were leaked back then showed that power meter. Feel free to dig up the discussion from that time, but as I recall the general consensus was that it was likely to be in a future variation of the firmware.

I very much doubt this. Lidars or radars require quite a lot of infrastructure for installation. Even a backwards-facing camera will need some radical improvements to work.

Mercedes announced that they're going to do _real_ autonomous lane changes, with car checking for the safety. I guess that Mercedes is going to be my next car if Tesla doesn't pull its head out of its ass...

Tesla does not use a CDN for updates. All this goes over the VPN directly, so it's not possible to use outside resources without compromising security.

Every hour the car checks in with the mothership to see if there is a firmware update waiting. (providing it's not in a deep sleep) It sends the configuration string that shows which hardware and which versions of them are in the car. Tesla used to send a large tarball with a full version and all HEX files for all possible hardware, but more recently they got smarter and now only send the specific files needed along with a binary patch for the CID/IC. So this is an incremental system now.

The 7.0 update was pretty small compared to some. (surprisingly) It's possible the 7.1 update is more involved because the AP stuff is large.

Sounds like radar/lidar is not really needed on future fully-auto cars, but just multiple cameras. And adding a camera to the rear window of TMS, like it has on front-window, is not that hard. I think it could be possible to retrofit SOME future upgrades to current AP cars, but I have a feeling that Tesla will not support/allow it, they rather sell a new car. Which is understandable, but may suck for some users.

wk, the ~62TB bandwidth would only be a factor if they pushed all cars concurrently like they apparently did with 7.0 correct?

So it could be a total coincidence but I was asking support for my slacker login info and I mentioned that I'd like the 7.1 update and got this response:
Attached are your slacker radio credentials, and I have submitted a request to our software engineers for the firmware to be pushed to your vehicle. The 7.1 firmware has started to roll out to all Model S owners and will be installed onto your vehicle once the download has been completed. If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to contact us anytime at 1-877-798-3752.

FYI my phone received the notification of an update a few hours later and it's installing on my car now. Could have just been my time. Or maybe the fact that I washed the car last night. Dirty cars don't get updated as fast...
  • 1/1/2015

but also a lot smarter than sending everything to every car and letting the car discard what it does not need. That simply wouldn't be viable as the number of vehicles and number of software variations increase over time. We also don't know for a fact if Tesla does have some sort of bandwidth throttle contractually built-in to their negotiated agreement with AT&T -- if so, that could account for why WiFi updates hit more cars faster -- assuming they do. Regardless, if I were Tesla and watching my costs, assuming Tesla pays for bandwidth they do use, I'd always prioritize WiFi first.

I personally don't buy internet bandwidth or data centers being an issue -- at least they don't have to be. It's not sexy stuff, but there is no excuse if Tesla is not ramping up support infrastructure as there is an increase in the size of the fleet. You would think Tesla would have the money to do that as the cash becomes available for a slight increase in support infrastructure every time a new vehicle is sold, and they project to the Press and Shareholders how many that is going to be in advance. It could come down to Tesla just not prioritizing build-out of this sort of infrastructure in a timely manner. ;) Apple e.g. had early problems with significant releases having hiccups and being slow getting to the masses on day of availability, but you don't hear much of those sort of issues these days with specific iOS packages being delivered to tens/hundreds-of-thousands of different iOS devices when it become generally available.

Without any facts to back it up, my own simple conspiracy theory is: I just think Elon didn't like CES and MBZ doing all the EV & Autonomous car announcements they did last week without Tesla also being in the Press and on Twitter. It started to bug him, so he pushed his company to get something out to enough cars that he could do a previously unplanned Sunday (!) press call. Under pressure, I bet the Tesla Development teams then elected to send the pieces and configurations that they had most confidence in or had ready-to-go -- vs perhaps all variations and the rest of the originally planned 7.1 changes many were expecting.

...and no, my S90D here in SoCal does not yet have the 7.1 download, now 2 days after the first one hit the waves.

Warning: You may not like what 7.1 does to Autosteer on (divided) highways.

While out testing the new software yesterday, I discovered that on a 6-lane divided highway with perfect visibility, well-marked lanes, no curves, no hills, and minimal traffic, AUTOSTEER FORCES YOU TO JIGGLE THE STEERING WHEEL AT LEAST ONCE EVERY 15 SECONDS to prevent receiving a message to hold the steering wheel.

IMHO this effectively takes away the ability to cruise using Autosteer. Just lightly resting your hand on the wheel doesn't stop the nagging "hold the wheel" messages; you've got to actively remember to wiggle the wheel every 15 seconds.

With the previous version 7.0 on the very same highway (which I routinely drive to the airport) I was able to drive 30 minutes without getting the nag. A few weeks ago I drove from DC to Atlanta and back without getting the message unless warranted by conditions (e.g., lane markings disappearing).

Has anyone else noticed this change with version 7.1?

I don't like that power meter, as it takes up 1/3 of the real estate space and doesn't add much besides the power meter. If they could improve the current one, while keeping both power meter and last 30 miles consumption visible at the same time, I think that would be a better step.

The current one is most likely logarithmic too.

I had a 300 mile trip right after installing 7.1 and the nag happened every 5 mins exactly. I can understand Tesla wanting to have a nag to make sure we are awake but it does get annoying after a few hours of driving. Also I think the timer should get reset if I start a lane change since it proves that I am in control of the car (I even had the nag happen in the middle of a lane change).

    A) Agree this blows.
    B) The clowns on YouTube acting out with AutoPilot are not really to blame. That stuff is inevitable. It's the lawyers that advise Tesla to do this for liability reasons. Lawsuits based on people doing stupid things and wanting compensation from the manufacturer should be summarily dismissed but there are judges that don't. THIS is the problem.
  • 1/1/2015

I'm definitely not seeing every five minutes for the nag. I had more nag than usual this morning, but the sun was low and the road shaded, which always gives it trouble. Despite that, I'm pretty sure I've gone more than five minutes. Unfortunately for my testing (but fortunate for my happiness), I'm getting the ludicrous upgrade done today, so no more testing for me.

I have now had the first case of the 5 mph limit kicking in on a road that did have a median. I believe it is because it is a long road that doesn't have a median at some points. Still a bummer. I think some people are going to run into the limit places they shouldn't, especially where map data is poor.

OK. It's all in one's POV I suppose. I still believe since the 7.0 function came out first (and likely passed Tesla's initial internal legal review before it was distributed to the fleet), and Elon/Tesla tries to push the envelope when they can, if the Clowns had not done what they did producing the videos, Tesla may not have made changes they have, at least in the timeframe it has occurred. I agree that liability will continue to be the greatest concern going forward with all of this -- IMHO smart people will get beyond developing the necessary tech, well before the legal nuances are worked out to make driverless NY-to-LA a reality.

You have to jiggle the wheel, just having your hand on it didn't work for me. Note that this was just what I experienced myself and others might not get the exact same result. My "testing" conditions were
4-6 lane divided highways in Florida (I-75, Florida turnpike, 528)
    Speed set to 75-80 mph
Night time driving low to medium traffic
No construction roads that I've driven 30+ times with no nag previously for 25 mins+ on autopilot

Results might be different with different speeds, stop and go traffic, etc. Like someone else posted don't take my word for it just letting everyone know my experience.

It doesn't work that way for me. When going into the garage, I open the bay with the Tesla. I get in and pull out. At the end of my driveway, it closes the garage bay. On the return trip, when I come up to the driveway it opens the garage bay as I turn the car around in the street and back up the driveway. I close it manually when going into the house.

Doesn't need to be that snake charger. A simple set of 3 motors can provide 3D movement in space and a trivial camera could handle the alignment requirements.

The snake is cool, but way overkill for what is needed at an SC, where having a gantry by the charge port is OK. It would be less acceptable in a home setting where something like the snake is more appropriate.

I just did a 2:30 round trip last night in wet conditions on 3 lane divided highways and only got the message about 3 times each way. It seemed to appear on curved sections and when the lighting conditions made the lane markers difficult to see.

Steering around curves does seem smoother, and while it found a few exit ramps very tempting, after drifting a bit over to the right it always pulled back over into the lane to stay on the main highway.

Unfortunately, when changing lanes, AP still swings way too far over in the lane being changed into, both right and left edge. At one point it even went so far over to the left that, even with a clear yellow line, the lane departure rumble came on! Perhaps Tesla should consider integrating the AP with the lane departure sensing system?

I agree. The upside to people getting excited about shiny stuff is that Tesla gets some free press, quite a bit of it. I'd argue, too, that the summon feature is useful for development reasons. If the eventual goal is autonomy, these baby steps are a necessity. So maybe (and I do mean maybe), this is just a way to work toward the bigger goal, and dress it up to get free press along the way. If so, that's not a terrible outcome.

Just got the upgrade. Of course, couldn't wait to try out Summon. After playing with it for the last hour, here are my initial impressions:

Coming out of the garage (pretty straightforward):

    1. Neighbor across the street caught me as I was calling for the car outside my closed garage. Worked perfectly! His mouth hung open for a good 30 seconds.... Unfortunately, that was the only good news.
    2. Since the car needs to always sense the FOB, I needed to be almost right up against the door for it the work every time. Using the app was even flakier, since the front of my garage is right on the edge of my good WiFi reception. So I was getting a lot of "lost communications" and other errors.
    3. Other than the above, the procedure worked pretty well. Every time I tried it, the wheels were basically aligned with the opening, so the car didn't have to do much steering. It opened the door and rolled out straight and predictable each time. I liked how the mirror were kept folded, since I have a bit of a narrow opening. I wanted to try it with the wheels starting out at an angle, but after my experience going into the garage, I kinda lost some interest.

Going into the garage (much more dicey):

    1. The car moved up to the closed door and opened it every time. This part worked well.
    2. I have a bit of a slope the last foot up to the base of the garage. At the threshold, there is a 3/4" lip that most garages have. If the garage door was already open, the car seemed to be able (most of the time) to negotiate the slope and the lip. If the door was closed however, Summon would mostly just shut down. If I restarted it, there was only a 50/50 chance of success.
    3. I was really disappointed that the car was unable to steer its way through the entrance if it was even slightly misaligned with the opening. One time I purposely aligned it so maybe an inch of the right side bumper would clip the doorway. The car made no effort to move over, even if the door was already open. Twice I had to stop it manually within 2-4 inches of the doorway (whew!)
    4. One time after entering the garage successfully, the car stopped a good 4 feet from the end, so that about a foot of its rear end was sticking out. I went over to figure out why, when the garage door started to come down(!!) I had to run over and grab the door just in time (whew again!!) I had already questioned how reliable the auto-Homelink thing was going to be, but now I was on alert! (BTW, turned out I had a bicycle a bit too close on the right side. After moving it, this did not re-occur.)
    5. As I mentioned above, the car had a penchant for getting caught at the slope/lip. However, for some reason, one time it decided everything was fine and started to close the door anyway!! This really took me by surprise and I just barely made it, throwing myself onto the hood with inches to spare (whew again!!!)

At this point I basically gave up, while I could imagine my neighbor looking out his window laughing hysterically at the weirdo geek and his toy....

    Conclusion:

    1. I did not come away with a comfortable feeling about this. In fact, I am way more comfortable having AutoPilot carry me down the highway at 70 mph, than watching the car park itself in the garage at ~1mph..... Summon isn't something you can use without close supervision. I admit that my specific circumstances are a contributing factor. But even so, some of failsafes need to be tightened up.
    2. I think I might continue to use it when leaving the house. But since I'm going to have to unplug it anyway, that kinda defeats the purpose. One thing I won't be using is the auto-Homelink, at least not when going back into the garage.....

I thought about this exact situation. I'm going to re-align my garage sensors so that it's at bumper level instead of ankle level. (I don't have small children to worry about). This should stop garage door unless there is clearance.

But, still requires neighboring cars due to sonic sensor only. That was my point 4 months ago.

That is a really good idea, even without Auto Homelink.

I wish I had done that before last week. It would have prevented mishap when I did not pull in quite far enough and the garage door hinge hit the bumper (fortunately no paint damage, just torn XPel and a very slight dent)

    - - - Updated - - -

It might, but in general if range is an issue, it is going to request you slow down to 65MPH or less, as that gives very large range improvements.

    - - - Updated - - -

Hopefully it also avoid trying to route me back to the supercharger I just left.

That was the last straw that caused me to turn off the trip planning feature.

    The "Nag" is tremendously worse!!

I have an average each way commute of 45 miles. Over 40 of them on the interstate. Before 7.1 there were only 2 places that would say "hold steering wheel" on a regular basis and that was it. Now with 7.1 I was asked to hold the steering wheel at least 10 times. I'll have to keep times and miles and see what the instigator is but the "Nag" factor has gotten terrible with this release. I sure hope "fleet learning" or updates will help this and it's not permanent.
  • 1/1/2015

I'm still on v7.0 but I've wondered about that "fleet learning" also. If it "learns", why does it ask me to hold the wheel at the same spot 95% of the time? The road is clear and the markings are clear? After 2+ months, I would think it should've learned by now.

Only had a short drive but didn't go so well:
    1. Summon via the app opened the garage door then had "summon error". Tried it again with the key and it started backing up.
    2. Didn't auto close garage door. Good thing I have an app for that.
    3. Tried autopilot for a minute on a divided highway. It started slowing down for a curve. I thought that curve was fine for the speed (and I've taken that curve 35mph faster non-ap)
    4. Forward collision warning went off VERY early. I have it set to late and I was pulling up to a car at a light.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I've seen no evidence that autopilot actually "learns". Mine behaves just as it did when 7.0 was released, which is to say very good but the parts of the road that cause issues still do. Disclaimer-- I'm still on 7.0.

    guest
@tezzla & @eye.surgeon I agree COMPLETELY. The only things that change the nag or losing its way is speed or weather or time of day. I don't think anything has shown any "learning" improvement thus far. Still hopeful that it will and that it will fix the nags that are grossly intrusive since the 7.1 update

WTF is "Summon Error"??? Was this thing written by interns???? You should never ever ever ever have a user facing general error like that unless you're a complete n00b. It should tell you exactly why it aborted even if that's above the average reading level of your audience.

WRT to fleet learning, this thread has discussed it at length. I've been a cautiously contrarian voice in that thread, as there was a lot more success reported than I would have expected. Knowing what I do about machine learning models, it seemed very unlikely to me that things would be updating as quickly as they were. It's not like you're on a road, you correct the car on a curve, and from that point forward the model knows how to take that specific curve. It takes many, many iterations on many similar curves in order to generalize well to those curves. Also, since it is layered on top of an existing Mobileye model, I would expect that the movement would be even slower.

All of that said, I do believe there is fleet learning. I haven't seen any evidence that new models are being pushed to the car regularly, though. My guess was that the first update was pushed in the bundle with 7.1.

To realign the garage door blocked-opening sensor beam to keep the existing low level
    sensing and add bumper-height sensing, with a Z-shaped sensor beam (A, B, C, D),
add two small mirrors (B and C), as described below (or some similar variation):

Call the original sensors A and D.

    1. Move just one sensor (D) up to "bumper height".
    2. Add (*) a small flat mirror (B), where sensor D was located.
    3. Add (*) a 2nd small flat mirror (C) above sensor A, at "bumper height".
    4. Align each mirror so that it faces the point exactly halfway between
    the opposite-side mirror and sensor.
    5. Check that breaking the new Z-shaped sensor beam works, both
at the original low level and the new "bumper level".

(*) Adding an additional mount similar to the sensor mounts might be
difficult, and the original mounts might not even be adjustable. So,
adding a vertical extension to each bracket, up to "bumper height"
might be easier. Some ingenuity might be required.

    Cheers, Gary

Trip planner 0 minute supercharger FAIL!!! O man, I'm disappointed at the "fix". The fix for 0-minute superchargers is to just display the supercharger, but not show a "0 min" next to it? Really Tesla? REALLY?????!?!?!?!?

Same with DC to NY. Given I didn't start with 90% or 100% charge, but I'm sure I could've made it to Newark DE, given my current charge state, without stopping for an undisclosed amount of time at Baltimore.

(I didn't actually do the trip, just playing with it during lunch)

It's much harder than you think. There are no rear window wipers and no mounting points, and even simply installing a camera requires careful calibration.

Which totally defeats the point of AP. So you might as well not use it at all. Even TACC without AP is better than keeping track of speed all the time.

That would imply an attempt at efficiency by only loading in the update modules for your package that pertain to your car. Why include a 10MB firmware update for air suspension if you dont have air suspension?

Agreed 100%. Beta = release now, forget about it later. Look at the trip planner which has been in beta for a long time now, and this update which supposedly fixes it, did not.

Just installed it and tried it. One part is cool, one bizarre

The cool part is driving out of the town of Middleburg on two-lane Route 50. I activated AP and set speed to 60 in a 25 mph zone. The car first held to 30 (showing a yellow triangle indicating the speed restriction was on) then raised speed to 40 just as it passed the 35 limit sign, raising it again to 55 while passing the 50 limit sign. Right after that point the road widens to a divided highway with a grass median. The warning went away as soon as the white lines appeared and the car accelerated to my 60 mph setting, 10 over the 50 limit. The divided highway lasts a little over a mile, and is basically there to facilitate passing. After that the road narrows back to two lanes. AP continued at 60 for several seconds on the two lane road, but as soon as double yellow turned into dashed yellow the restriction warning came back on and the car slowed fairly sharply to 55, once again 5 over. So restrictions may be annoying in principle, but having the car manage speed while leaving (and I presume entering) small towns is pretty cool. Having 50 or 55 mph two-lane roads that slow to 25 going through little villages is quite common around here. I wish the restriction was 7 mph over instead of 5, since thats what most cars here do, meaning you would not seem to others like like a slow car, but I can see how Teslas offering a 7-over restriction would be fairly random. Oddly, there were no nags on my trip, but I touched the wheel on this test more than I ordinarily would. I will test 7.1 on an interstate this evening.

The bizarre part was using the summon feature to park in my garage. It worked in the sense that it drove near the closed door, opened it with Homelink and drove in, but entering the garage the wheel began cranking and the car ended up parking with a sharp leftward skew (I use the right space in a two car garage). The problem was that because of the odd shape of the garage (deeper and wider on the left side) and shape of the driveway, my wife parks her car skewed to the left in the left bay. Looking at it, the MS exactly matched the skew of her car, so the two were parallel. I wanted my car to be parallel to the right-hand wall of the garage. It took me a while to manually get the MS back out because the tight garage door and the curb to the right just outside the door kept setting off the proximity alarm. The car kept shifting from reverse into park, apparently thinking I was going to hit an obstruction. I managed to ease the car out, but had to put it in gear several times. So summon doesnt seem suited for my particular circumstances.

Just finished the install a few hours ago and am eager to try it out. Looking forward to that.

But regarding the car switching into park while backing out of the garage, my S does that anytime in reverse and the seat belt is not fastened and I lift my butt off the seat (to see behind me by looking over the seats).

Apparently with the belt unfastened and little weight in the seat the car thinks I've gotten out and shifts itself into park.

    A couple of this.

First, I want to thank the 75 NEW PEOPLE who have signed up to use the Firmware tracker over the last 2 days (since the 7.1 roll-out started).

Second, I don't have AP hardware, but I wonder what the limit is on garage parking in terms of how "lined up" do you need to be for the car to park in a garage? See the diagram below. We have a 2-car garage and a 4-car driveway in front of the garage. My g/f's daughter parks her SUV in the lower part of the right driveway, so I can still get my Model S in and out of the garage as the image shows. The left garage and driveway is open so my g/f can freely get in and out of her spot.

Could the Summon/UnSummon handle this kind of parallel parking into the garage by itself?
