I notice that he had to back the car in because of the charge port location. I'm still a bit peeved that Tesla put it in the back instead of in the front, but I'll get over it eventually. Maybe.

    I like backing in. ;)

I guess I'm going to get good at it, since that's how I'll have to park in my garage to make charger access convenient. Hooray for HD backup cameras!

Why is the hood fogged up do you think? What time of the day was the video taken?

I think this is how a Tesla looks after a night of sleep outside (just like other cars)
  • 1/1/2015

Backing in is much safer than backing out because when you back in you can see the obstructions (because you just drove by). I always either back in or pull through so that when I'm leaving I'm driving forward. My only problem is that the charge port is on the wrong side of the car, so in my case I'll have to park close to the passenger's side of the driveway so that the UMC will reach because the electrical outlet is on the passenger's side when the Model S is backed in.

Tesla really needs to consider having a selectable charge port on either side (that is, two charge ports but only one active). This shouldn't be too hard to do.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I still think it would be 'cool' if they could have a charge flap on each side, and the ability to have each one active to its' own charger in the car. (The Model S has the option to have 2 charger modules, but I think they wire them for one joined input, not separate.) That way if you found two J1772 spaces available you could charge from both at once and get 13.2kW instead of 6.6kW. There are lots of 'public' sites that have multiple 6.6kW (30A) J1772s and frequently 2 are available at once. Of course you would leave the J1772s unlocked so if someone needed one of the plugs they could unplug one of them and still leave the Model S charging at 6.6kW.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Of course if L1 and L2 happen to be reversed between the two chargers, that could be a costly mistake (or two phases from a 3 phase office park source). I think there is a good bit of work to make sure enabling of charging from two sources won't damage anything.

Not if the chargers were isolated from each other.
I wasn't suggesting that they parallel the AC, rather they send one AC feed to one charger, and another AC feed to the other charger. They could parallel the DC output to the battery, but keep the inputs isolated from each other. (Note, I am not an EE, but sometimes I think I know what I am talking about.)

This isn't an "official" sighting, per se, because it's not a production car, but here's Beta 55 in San Francisco (Potrero Hill) on Rhode Island and 19th St. Must be an employee who lives there and had this test mule for the weekend. Interior was ripped apart, car was de-badged except for the rear silver strip. Still, I recognized it instantly and had to pull over and check it out!

Perhaps not "random", but I went to the Dania Beach (South Florida) Tesla store today to try to exchange a gift (a friend bought me a Tesla shirt -- as if I needed another one! -- but it's two sizes too large) and a Founders Model S was in the back being readied for delivery! You can imagine my surprise, especially because it was basically my configuration, except with the white performance interior instead of the black. Apologies in advance for the quality -- I wasn't expecting to take any pics and only had my iPhone with me (which is pretty obvious from the reflections!). Anyway, here are the pics with some commentary:

    IMG_0336.JPG

For those who were worried about the gray performance wheels with the Sig red, don't! It looked AMAZING in person.

    IMG_0337.JPG

I know there are other pictures of this, but on the side light it is etched "Founders" -- wonder if it will say "Signature" here? Probably not, but you never know. When the car "shuts off" (or the key is punched twice), it lights up yellow, and I was told it will blink with the turn signal. Very cool!

    IMG_0338.JPG

I have to confess I don't understand the obsession with VINs, but I know there are those who are really interested in this, so I tried to get a clear picture of the VIN. Looks like Founders 26 if I'm not mistaken.

    IMG_0339.JPG

I think there has been a picture of this, but on the right side of the rear chrome strip it is etched "Founders". This is a close-up of the etching (with my daughter and me in a cameo in the reflection)....

    IMG_0340.JPG

And this is a shot where you can sort of see it on the right side. Also, I completely forgot to take a picture of the rear spoiler, which can be seen at the top of this photo. For those who are wondering, I thought it looked great, and didn't stick out, even without any other carbon fiber on the exterior of the car.

A couple of other notes -- like the couple that posted on the official site, this car is missing a few things (rear seats, roof shade etc.) that are on a punch list to be added later. I also got a good look at the sticker, though totally forgot to take a picture of it (sorry!). The final price on this (before tax) is $110k because it's fully loaded with every possible option. Also, the carbon fiber has a "satin" finish (word of the Tesla rep). It looked great and felt really nice and smooth without causing any smudging when touched.

One last thing -- the tech I spoke with said he just got back from Fremont, and he couldn't believe how well the factory was humming -- he said that the Model S's were lined up and ready to go! He was very excited and thinks deliveries should basically be on time. Graham was busy signing up a new customer (I think it was 11,420 or thereabouts if that sounds right to those keeping track), but was also optimistic that we'd start seeing cars being delivered fairly soon.

Did you happen to see if it had paint armor on it? Were the lines obvious?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Thanks for the pics Arnold. Actually, this is the first time I've seen the "Founder" etched into the chrome onto the back of the car. I'm pretty sure the side badge says "Signature" on the sigs, but don't quote me on that.
  • 1/1/2015

There's a couple of FL people who were involved in the Tesla start-up phase who have Founders Roadsters and may be in line for Model S Founders; also one of our local club members (who's not on TMC!) was an investor since day one and they are getting a Founders series.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Actually, a Founders Roaster (22? A red one) was in the shop also, though I was told it was two different Founders for the S and Roadster.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I'm 99% sure that the sticker had paint armor on it, though I have no idea if it was on the car, although if it was done at the factory then I assume it would be on there already. I can tell you that the car was beyond shiny, to the point where the tires were so shiny my daughter asked why they were "wet". If that was at least in part due to the paint armor then sign me up! I can tell you I didn't notice any lines at all and looked at it a good long while, so it certainly blended in well with the Sig red.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
There's a red Founders Roadster and an orange one. I don't know for certain if the Roadster owners are getting Model S, but our club member is a definite Founder (you probably met them and didn't know it ).
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
If the car was that shiny, it's due to the paint, not the paint armor. There is a distinct difference in appearance on the areas where the armor ends and the paint begins. Anyone who gets a chance just look at your reflection in the armor, then compare it to the rest of the hood.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Sorry -- I conflagrated two thoughts there. I'm almost certain the car had the paint armor, and it was barely noticeable, at least on the red, with respect to where the armor stopped and started.

Separate thought -- Tesla is going out of its way to make these cars look great at delivery. As spic and span as anything you'd get from a regular dealer, and probably better.

Saw my first Model S in the wild this evening (other than the Get Amped Tour). If you are the owner of the black Model S with 21" wheels that was driving west on I-88 between Oak Brook and Naperville (most likely coming from the Oak Brook store?) this evening around 6:00PM, I apologize for stalking you.

It looks a lot like the founders car (#12) I saw in Chicago three weeks ago. It was an all black performance with 21" tires. Though I remember it having the darker rims and this looks more like silver rims.

The Tesla guys said that Chicago was Tesla's second biggest market after California. So they probably have got at least ten there by now.

Saw my first Models S in the wild today on 210 Freeway at 71 Fwy interchange in CA, black paint. Tried to get a picture but I was going too fast in HOV lane, and Model S was three lanes over going about 60 mph.

Given the "ramp" start-up, this thread will now likely explode! I expect about 30,000 posted sightings of a few thousand cars in the next 5 months.

Saw a silver one on 280 just outside sf in the far right lane. It was so easy to see from far away. I pulled up next to it, but was driving so couldn't snap a pic. Also, it was going like 40 on the freeway so I passed it and it never caught up to me :(. Must have been an employee testing stuff because it had no plates and was driving mad slow!

Anyone getting silver should be happy to know people will easily see you coming from a distance! Looked like an Aston.

July 7 at 5:30 PM a good friend was driving my RX400h through the Garden State Plaza in Paramus NJ and I saw a car that strongly resembled the Model S by the Neiman Marcus valet booth apparently being watched. My thought was S or another car when I looked back I said probably a Maserati but now I realized it was a Model S. Color was Red. I have been told this S is in the area from a reliable source.

The rims were definitely silver. Although I could definitely be wrong, this one looked like it had just been picked up from the Oak Brook store.

Interesting that it was driving so slow. I saw a black one on foothill expressway in Los Altos around 7pm a few nights back. It was also driving quite slow (maybe 35 in a 45). I thought that was a bit odd, almost wondering if the driver was testing turtle mode or something. Or perhaps they were going for the 400mi. club.

I also saw Jurvetson's in Menlo Park a week back. I did snap a few quick (bad) pics on my phone. Even for being a bit dirty it was very shiny (making it hard to discretely take a good pic in the bright sun) and it really looked great! A couple notes though, the paint armor was semi-noticeable on his sig red (though didn't really bug me and I've probably trained myself to look for it now), and there seemed to be a weird gap between his back right passenger door and the rear quarter panel near the handle that I hadn't noticed in previous photos. (Of course I didn't get a good pic of that, which I'm really kicking myself for, so it didn't happen, but anyone else that spots his car may want to look there.) But I did get a pic of his white EV carpool sticker slapped on next to his license plate. :-/ (Next time I'll try to get pictures of things that matter.) Interesting approach. For some reason that placement doesn't bother me as much as the traditional bumper placement. I also heard of folks putting it in the corner of the rear window.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Yeah, I thought it looked okay there. I don't think it really matches with the instructed placement, but I doubt you'd get much trouble about it. (Although he didn't have one on the right quarter panel either.)

Just noticed that he has a CHP 11-99 license plate frame. Probably a good accessory to go with a perf model.

Can we all just promise each other that if we do put HOV stickers on the car, we'll put them on straight? I can't tell you how many cars I've seen with the sticker just sort of randomly stuck someplace, crooked. Yeesh. If you can't do a competent job yourself, take it to a body shop or a vinyl graphics shop and get it done professionally. You'll be looking at it for at least three years, and more if the program is extended.
  • 1/1/2015

Does the sticker glue mess with the paint? I see many yellow stickers on priuses, etc. that have expired. Wonder why people don't take them off...
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
    lasers!
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
They're tamper resistant to prevent theft, so the sticker comes apart when you peel it off. I'm guessing it makes enough of a mess that people just don't bother. My understanding is that the stickers can be removed fairly easily with proper technique, though. I think it involves using a heat gun. When the yellow sticker law expired, there were local body shops who offered to do it for free.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Use a hairdryer not a heat gun. Works just as well and no risk of burning the paint.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
The same reason they don't bother to put them on straight. To most people cars are a utilitarian implement to get them from point A to point B. Especially out here when the carpool stickers were offered.

But to answer your original question, I used paint armor. I got scrap pieces from the guy who does my tinting, stuck the sticker to the paint armor, trimmed to the size of the sticker, and then applied the paint armor to the car. So when it's time the paint armor will come off leaving nice clean paint behind. It also allowed me to "float" the stickers for a bit to get them lined up as well as possible before squegee'ing them down.

    strider,

You did a great job aligning those stickers. But why do you have three of them on the back? Is that required? Are there more on the front?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
The white stickers come in a set of three. One on the right rear bumper, and one on each rear quarter, behind the rear wheel. Since the Roadster has almost nothing behind the rear wheels, I'd say that those are applied absolutely as well as they could be done. Nice job, Strider!

Spotted at the intersection of Hwy 84 and Newark Blvd in Newark this morning; sorry for the poor pics but, the white with perf wheels looked great!

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1346084323.231936.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1346084366.926655.jpg

Caught a brief glimpse of the license plates at the rear and thought that they looked like 'real' plates with no MFG or DLR markings. So, I have a neighbor in Fremont who's driving a production S already! Or, it could be a Tesla employee heading for the factory...
  • 1/1/2015

You didn't get the VIN number ?!?

Joking aside, nice catch! A number of the Founders are also employees, so it could have been one of them. (Didn't GeorgeB order a white one?)

Is it me, or is the driver wearing a red shirt, similar to the ones employees wear???

(Edit: Zoomed in with my photo editing program and it doesn't look like there is any more red on the shirt than the surrounding area)

Nice? is that white or pearl!?
  • 1/1/2015

At this point, I think it would have to be pearl, since it's either a Founders or a Signature.

Saw a Signature Red, non-perf with chrome 21" wheels on Ralston Ave in Belmont this morning. The female driver accelerated away too quickly for a picture. I guess there is a founder living in Belmont or San Carlos.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I don't think there's any way to tell whether a car is non-performance from the outside unless you see the interior (alcantara or carbon fiber). The spoiler and performance wheels are optional--so a perf and non-perf can look the same from the outside. On the other hand, if you see the spoiler or performance wheels, it is performance. (Unless someone traded performance wheels with a non-perf).

I saw a signature red parked on El Camino in Belmont near Ralston a week ago, but it did have performance wheels, so must be a different car. Here is a photo I snapped from my window--I felt uncomfortable getting out of the car to check the VIN.

Regular Sig76 is listed on the map for Millburn, but that is north and I don't believe we are that far into production...

Hey, that's a pretty long ride from MD... 85 kWh pack should help there.

The color of the car I saw looked just as in JoshG's photos of Model S F000021. I know the S is styled like some other cars, but this looked spot on for color and shape esp from the back after it passed. (If I weren't headed to the office, I would have made a quick U-turn to confirm and get a photo).

You're not thinking of changing your White for a Blue?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I was thinking about it, yeah. I just find the gap around the trunk so unattractive on some of the Get Amped cars, where it's both uneven and a bit oversized. Also, those cars have had various issues with panel alignment. The dark color hides all of these issues more effectively. But, I really like the car in white, and I'm fervently hoping that Tesla isn't stringing me along when they say that they're working to make the gaps smaller.

If I were taking delivery in mid-2013, I wouldn't think twice about it, because I'm sure that these issues will be refined out of the cars as production progresses. But, being pretty early in the line means that there's always a risk that they won't have it solved yet. I think they're going to have to have it solved, though, or they're going to get beat up in early reviews.

I'm going to be watching the early deliveries very carefully.

Nice VFX! I love the view of the S in the distinctive Roadster side view mirror. Great pic!

Funny! Some could say the same about us Tesla fanatics. Get a life! Stop checking the boards for updates every few minutes! ;)

Catching up on this thread. The test drive car, parked at the store, does not count as a random sighting.

I noticed that too. ;-) Always a little hard to tell on the dark colors, and things vary a lot with the height of the camera, but it looks very encouraging.

Eagerly awaiting the first photo of a white one. :)

And lighter colors exaggerate gaps with shadows adding to the width of panel spacing. The visual deception goes both ways.

A friend of mine tweeted me this today. This was taken yesterday (Sunday) in Half Moon Bay.

Founders car, yes? Didn't one of those go to Half Moon Bay?

Meanwhile, I sighted myself while test driving the dolphin grey performance car at Santana Row today!

    It looks really, really good.

I've owned a car before in California that didn't have the front license plate and I never got pulled over for it. It's kinda like the rule against the camera shields folks put over their plates, or the window tinting rule. It's enforced selectively, and usually because a cop wants to pull you over for some other reason.

After I get my Model S....I'm afraid cops will want to pull me over just to check out the car!

I was re-watching the "First Model S Test Drives" video on Tesla's site and noticed that one of the cars had a front license plate bracket installed. You have to look close, because there is no plate attached. It is at 1:25 in the video shot outside the door when the cars start to pour out during the First Deliveries event at the plant.

    Here's a screen shot:

Some of those (I think it was 3) were destined for the Chicago area, so Illinois rules apply. The car you spotted could easily have been one of those.

The panel gaps along the rear hatch look great - very consistent spacing the whole way.

Consistent, but big. Still hoping for better fit more comparable to the early betas.
