Social Chat - Short Term TSLA Movements part 2

Completely disagree brian. If you want to sell an at the money put for the next 14 months as tesla goes up, you have to walk the strike price of those puts up. The difference is that you have to make 1 correct call now with the LEAP put, or you have to make 14 correct calls and not have a crash during that time. Let's say the price rises 10 dollars each month for the next 7 months, like it did this year from about april to december. You sell the 160, then you sell the 170, then you sell the 180 etc until you're at the 230 on month seven. Then on month 8 it is down 40 dollars, just like tesla did now. Because you sold the 230 put for only 3 dollars, and you just lost 40 dollars that month, you've lost all the money you've made plus more.
Each situation has its perks, neither is truly better.

Your first sentence and your last sentence disagree. I agree with your last sentence. :)

I wasn't suggesting there wasn't merit in the long PUTs. My point was that they can often be beat, and the flexibility can sometimes open up dramatic opportunities. But yes, if you see the current price as a local low that you think might represent a long-term low then locking in the long PUT can be simple and easy -- kind of like locking in a fixed interest rate on your mortgage.

Touche, man, touche. I did shoot myself in the foot with that opening sentence.

Ugh, my nov 1 160 order for .80 didn't get filled at open. I should have known better and placed it at .85. Oh well, next time.

I thought as well that the dip at the opening was a possible good deal, and same story: order not executed.
But consedering the intraday swings, who knows what numbers we will see again today...

And I bought it, just a few of them at 1.1. Not the cheapest I could have had them, but OK, at least I see some green today!!!

Yeah, the reason I'm not selling puts at a shorter term is because I am in an IRA and can't use margin which changes the way you look at selling options. Mostly I want the higher premium to reduce the amount of cash I need to secure it. I have a core equity position but didn't want to buy calls because of the premium and felt that I wanted a little bit less risk than buying more shares directly. On margin I might be selling multiple puts into the earnings call but until I am maxing out all the contributions to my tax-free accounts I won't be getting into that type of thing.

It's earnings time and Tesla has been always prone to volatility. I call what we are a "crossover period" where significant events occur that test execution. The last time Tesla was down for the month was in Feb and Dec. It's not coincidence that significant events occurred in the months that were before earnings and right when Tesla was communicating a lot more.

We're down because people want to see execution on a global scale. They want to see if Tesla can take the "heat" and have what it takes. There's pressure and arguments made that Tesla will fail on both the demand side, and if there is demand they won't be able to fulfill it. I seriously hope Musk and co. proves the market wrong again. Not even fully for monetary purposes (but that would be sweet), but just to prove the naysayers wrong out of pride.

What's this NASDAQ options outage about?

Nice to see TSLA picking up a little at the end here.

I must say, I am getting increasingly confident about this Tuesday. The short percentage must be close to where it was before Q1. The stock is the "weakest" it's been since the beginning of this year and I think shorts are trying to take full advantage of that. I don't see how earnings could be bad though. The #s will either be good or great, I can't see demand not being huge, supply constraints should be almost fixed, model x details should be coming , etc. My gut is telling me this is going to be epic.
  • 1/1/2015

+1. I now officially think a "meh" Q3 is priced in.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I'm starting to feel more confident as well. I sold 45 puts for 145 nov and was nervous the last few weeks, but I'm starting to feel more confident as well. If earnings creates a little pop I think the shorts may turn it into a large pop. At least that is what I'm hoping for. I have a lot riding on these options and really hope earnings goes smoothly. Also that nobody says anything stupid like the Apple guy did or Musk say ANYTHING about over valued, etc. It's time for them to watch what they say, give great guidance, and regain some of the losses.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
It's definitely going to be epic. Question is will it be a good epic or bad epic :) What my biggest concern is that Tesla will be conservative about future guidance and that will hurt us. All these companies are now taking the apple approach of low ball then blowout your own expectations and the market is starting to catch on. I really hope Musk doesn't get too conservative. This is the time to show what they're made of. If they have a good quarter but get conservative then that can really hurt and cause things to plummet. I'm sure that's not what they want so I hope they take that into consideration.

In regards to shorts covering, I actually think if there is an initial small pop, most shorts won't cover b/c they'll wait for a fade (this has happened a lot recently) and if the fade doesn't happen then there will be another pop as shorts cover and then a few days later as they get margin calls. This would be best case scenario in my opinion. That we start making a consistent and strong move upwards.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Let's hope all that popping is done <Nov 16th. I've debating getting into more calls over the past few days, but I think I just need to ride into this ER with what I've got and thank my lucky stars if we see the good sort of epic.
  • 1/1/2015

Well my original plays were somewhat hinging on hedges in the middle and on earnings day. I've somewhat alleviated with averaging down and moving to lower strikes when price differences have gotten smaller so I now mostly sit on Nov 170 and Dec 175s, but I'm currenlty 70% invested in Tsla options at various expirations that have taken a 40% loss so far. Solar is the rest and that has balanced out some and kept me overall ca 25% down.

my big dilemma is now on my total risk exposure and I don't see a good way to reduce risk without taking heavy losses and making break even even harder. I will probably still hedge the November ones with $185 strikes no matter what their price just to reduce risk and to still be able to make it into the green and hope for profit on the Dec, Mar, Jan options...

It really got me worried when he says that they're not likely to get acquired at their current stock price and laughed. Seems like he really thinks the stock price is over valued and a joke and doesn't mind things staying at this level for a while. Or that he doesn't want it to go up much more too fast b/c it's probably not too health for the company? Not sure. He also seemed very reserved and played things down a lot.

Personally I would prefer it if Tesla's leadership team, including Elon, not comment on the stock price, because the press just misuses these statements in order to make click-bait headlines.

My response to any question on the stock price would be, "I don't know. It's up to the market to decide what our company is worth."

Has the street already taken into account the positive cash flow statement?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I thought positive cash flow just meant they make money on each car, but since they reinvest it in the business, it doesn't show up as profit?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
How is that different from being "profitable"?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Profitable has to do with the Income Statement whereas the phrase "positive cash flow" deals with the Statement of Cash Flows.

Here are a few links that describe the various financial statements (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Statement of Cash Flows), and their similarities/differences:

You quoted me and then I decide to delete my post. But here is an article:

    http://www.bizfilings.com/toolkit/sbg/finance/cash-flow/cash-flow-and-profit.aspx

That explains it well I think... I realized my comment doesn't really explain any difference between cash flow and profit but I think when people think of a company being profitable they really think cash flow first. Profit is sort of more complicated.

Yes, good interview, thanks for posting!

And it confirms the goal is now in fact 10,000 (to 15,000), annually, just for Germany (as opposed to for the whole of Europe, the context in which this number was mentioned in earlier times). (EDIT: By end of next year, I think.)
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
This would mean that we need a real Tesla factory also in Europe. Don't you think so?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Yes, I guess it's just a question of time, at which point it will start being the more cost-effective solution, given that Tesla also needs to invest in Model X production facilities in a similar time frame. And it will be reducing CO2 as well, of course, so I m sure they will make this step as soon as it starts making sense in terms of the larger picture.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Yes I also reacted to this one, it was the only thing that made me irk throughout the whole interview.. Besides that it was great.
  • 1/1/2015

I too didn't like that, but he might not have thought them overpriced, but instead that no other car company would have the finances to buy them. Ford has a market cap of $66B, GM has $52B, Volkswagen $85B. So buying a company that is 25-35% of your own market cap might be hard. So it's again down to interpretation and I'm not sure anyone but us is going to interpret the proper way, we'll probably see again and again headlines that EM thinks Tesla is overvalued too etc.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I think he meant most car companies don't have the bank balance to buy them. He has already said the TSLA is going higher higher in the long run.

Elon needs to change his answer to the valuation question as others have said. It's the one thing he has done that has irritated me since it's so easy to answer it in a way that can't be turned against the company and the stock.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Elon uses tongue in cheek logic based humor. "It's not as crazy to short Tesla now" - translation: before they were super crazy $30-to-$120+ now they are just crazy $160-to-$250. His comment on stock price and valuation is simply that the other car companies couldn't afford Tesla based on market cap ratios. Besides he holds a ton of stock and has effective control of the company and the board. He might possibly let it go for $200B if he would believe the future owners to have the same sustainability vision as his. That scale of capital might actually get him to Mars. But I don't think anyone has $200B loose change in the kitty to throw at a fledling car company, so it seems he will have to see the project through to completion if his end game is to live on Mars in style.

I just sold my last 3D printer shares. Been in since mid 2011-ish (before the Greek debt fiasco), booking a total gain of ~500%. Sold 80% of my stake last December since I wasn't paying attention any longer, but apparently the trend has continued. Amazing the sort of luck it is possible to have with stock picks...I guess everyone is an expert in a bull market.

Nice run. Maybe the November 16th $180s I paid $18 will crawl back to a not insane level of loss :).

Not much for me to do for the earnings call. I've already got 175s and those 180s. Even with a good ER, I'm mostly just hoping that break even around $195 is attainable. The chances of making any real money are small given the mid-teen premiums I paid a few weeks ago, but getting out with most of my skin intact would be a good result at this point.

I'm hanging on to my bright red Nov 200's. They were throbbing a little less today, but still have a ways to get to green. I did however temporary reassign some solar winnings to Nov 16 170's that are nicely green. I'm really debating whether or not I should lock in the gains sometime tomorrow and then let the 200's play until expiration? Obviously the 170's stand to gain much more to the 16th, but as they're in my tax free account, I'm a little more risk adverse and tend to scalp more.

I also picked up a bit more stock in the 160's, I'm still mad at myself for offloading some a while back.

I got an email from my broker saying I needed to call them or have my options approval rescinded. I called and they said they were concerned about my losses from Oct. I said "yeah that sucks. You are aware I am still up 400% for the year on my options?" He was actually cool about it and removed the threat. With today I am halfway back for Oct losses. Very exciting!

Consider hedging with Nov $200's for example. It allows you to reduce the cost basis for the spread and still leaves a bit for profit possible.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Yeah nice comeback austinEV. I got the same thing last year after AAPL finished crashing. My understanding is, there's a pretty stiff regulatory environment on Options trading for these brokerages and they have to show active monitoring.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Not sure what you mean on this. You mean buying Nov 200s puts?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I think he means selling Nov 200 calls. The money you receive will reduce your total cash outlay. Might bring your break even down to ~$195ish Your max profit is if tesla goes to $199.99 on Friday.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Yes, I meant selling Nov $200 calls in the same amount you bought the $180's. This reduces your cost somewhat and lowers the break even point at the cost of limiting upside. I'd sell the strike that you think will barely be reached if at all yet gives you still profit if done so. That's why i suggested $200 and not $195 as the latter basically causes you to have almost no upside potential, just break even... You might consider $205 too...

    - - - Updated - - -

PS! This is recovery play trying to get back to green, not a strong ER big profit play. Thought to clarify. If you think it'll blow past $200 then don't hedge that low. I personally don't expect TSLA to exceed the ATH in time for November expiration so wouldn't bet too much over $195.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I agree and took similar action. I had Nov 200s that were almost worthless compared to what I paid for them, I sold them last week and used the capital to make a $170/$190 spread. I actually got to keep a small amount. Making a $170/$200 would've required an additional debit. Even though I had lost 75% of my initial capital the $170/190 spread will get it all back for me if TSLA finishes ~$188 with a tiny amount of profit if it finishes higher. A lot better chances than the >200 that was required just for the call to be worth anything. In this case anything above $170 will give me some capital back.

I'm more than fine with that hedge as I still have DEC $200s for the chance the ER brings us to ATHs and there is time for that to happen with them. Before yesterday they were worth 1/4th what I paid, now worth 1/2....haha. If the ER doesn't look good I will probably dump them first thing in the morning for whatever I can get for them before IV crunch is complete.

Not sure what would qualify as a paper loss. It is in an IRA so I figure its all unrealized until I retire. I did sell and rebuy similar options (missed out on some of the downturn but not much). So if it was in a cash account I would have booked losses and taken new cheap positions which are technically profitable right now. But I don't worry about such things in a tax deferred account.

What is the link to the earnings call, or is that the 2:30PM PT one (5:30et) and just a written report will come out at 4pm ET?

Hi everyone -- I'm a USC student looking to do a short interview with a Tesla owner in Southern California. If someone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. I would ask you about your Tesla and what you think the future of electric cars is in Southern California. Also, I can't seem to post this as a new post, so if anyone could help me with that too that would be great! Thanks -- Sean

Wow, I'll let others hear explain this drop to me. Quickly reading but so far looks about what we expected?

No 2014 guidance, everything else is exactly as expected, no blowout. There is indication that GM might exceed 25% if favorable options selections continue. There is also raise to 21.5k deliveries and expected 6k cars in Q4. I have to say it's not blowout and that's maybe what the market expected. I guess what we need now is to listen to the actual CC so that we'll hear Elon's take on things that may move the stock one way or the other. The drop right now is on the meh report to not even the lows we saw past weeks.

A beat, but maybe not as much as people had inflated their hopes to. Also no guidance for next year... a lot of companies have been rated up or down recently more based on guidance than current figures. I think they intentionally held back guidance.

Biggest surprise I see in here is that Model X is being "accelerated". I'm not sure whether that means they intend to deliver it earlier or if that just means that they are picking up the pace in anticipation of delivering it on time. I want to hear clarification about that on the call.

Well tomorrow should be interesting. Hopefully Elon and his crew work their magic during the CC and nothing Facebookish slips out.

I need Elon to save my Nov 200's...and in turn... me

That is extremely unlikely to happen though. I can't see what Elon could say that would propel the stock to >$200 now that no 2014 guidance is given (and if they didn't put it to the letter, there won't be a guidance in the CC).

I am sure that someone will ask though - while I am sure that it was entirely intentional that they did not include guidance in the letter, at least something more reassuring can be said, right? I have come to grips with a loss tomorrow, but come on, 10%?!

For people holding stock it's 10%, for people holding options it's likely 100% for most...

+1 yeah I was just referring to common. I am on tap for my biggest-ever loss, and even sadder it occurs with the numbers that I and many others were expecting. Oh well, won't be quitting my day job any time soon

Yea I wrote these options off in my mind a while ago, but come on... we went from people saying there's no demand and too many supply hiccups to this...
