guest Chin up, there's lots of time and impending news between now and then. You can always roll up and out to 2016 in the late summer before time decay accelerates, regardless of where the price action is.
1/1/2015
guest Similar idea but I went out a little farther to catch Q1 and Q2: Sept 220s and 240s here.
1/1/2015
guest We were in the 30s a year ago. And near 150 like a month ago. There's more than enough potential and time to see those go up.
That said I wouldn't put everything into 300s for '15, but I do have several contracts of '16 400s (as part of a spread to 500), and I still feel good about them.
I did sell a bull put spread the other day, I just don't see under 200 as being realistic, but then again the market likes to be unrealistic sometimes.
1/1/2015
guest agreed- easy hold until september- take advantage of the LEAP nature of those and roll them out later even if not ITM- they will gain faster on any upswing from here than the J16s; If you believe TSLA is at a relative local low currently- this is not the time to roll out; In fact this would be the time to consider converting stock or J16 to J15 (roll-in to catch more of the upswing) or just hold for now
1/1/2015
guest I had several Deep ITM calls Jan 15 that I rolled to Jan 16, close to the bottom, for $4 to $9 each.
I wanted to put some more money in TSLA, and experienced that there is a large difference between the interest rate paid/asked in Norway compared to US. I asked for, and got my portfolio margin account approved one week ago
I have never traded margin before, nor needed too, but the interest rate of margin on IB is about 1/6 of the interest rate in Norway, so I found it quite convenient to use it.
The last weeks I have loaded several J16 300 options, among other, and I am looking forward to the good news in the near future

1/1/2015
guest Congrats on the Model S, Model X reservation, and options purchases, Wenche. Be careful with portfolio margin, though!

1/1/2015
guest The discussion about HFT currently happening on CNBC is fascinating (Michael Lewis is a participant.)
Update: Anyone interested in the subject should watch this. It was a very heated, direct, no-holds-barred argument between Michael Lewis and Brad Katsuyama on one side, and William O'Brien, who is the BATS Global Markets president, on the other. Pure financial boxing!

1/1/2015
guest March was tough on my LEAPS and some other TSLA options. It is nice to see at least two of them have turned slightly green with today's action. Hoping that April sees everyone's reds go green!
1/1/2015
guest I agree! Hurray to the end of March. Let's hope April is much better!
1/1/2015
guest I orderd his book yesterday. I have no problem with HFT being used for liquity and to keep the bid-ask spreads close. But all that other alleged things as mentioned in the 60 minutes piece is crimimal.

guest Those kittens are far too large for that car.
Yes, I need to remember to sell some shares when this forum says "omg, thank you so much for all the research. Will the stock go to x in 6 weeks (x=1.3current price). I think so!" It always seems so clear in hindsight...
Then when things are quiet and full of "why aren't we tracking the nasdaq" it is time to buy. A TMC meta indicator is in order...
1/1/2015
guest Half-seriously beware shorts. A rested, laughing, kitten re-tweeting, Route 66 family road tripping, rocket launching Elon should scare shorts to death. Think playing Jordan one-on-one in his prime and seeing the tongue starting to stick out....be afraid shorts, be very afraid.

guest I also pre-ordered it, just on the strength of Michael Lewis' name. I think he is a brilliant (financial) writer, with an uncanny ability to explain really complicated things to a lay audience.
His book about the 2008 financial crisis is excellent. I highly recommend it.
But the debate I linked to is worth seeing even if one ordered the book, for the sheer intensity and raw emotion overflowing on live TV. Who knew CNBC could be gripping?

1/1/2015
guest I'm happy that I basically did this in the 240-250 range, though I probably should have done it with more of my holdings. Basically sold enough to get myself out of margin debit...and now I'm back into it, to some extent anyway, and wondering if I want to load up any more significantly than I already have. Feels nice to have little margin debit, but I do think we're at a local bottom (sold puts two days ago in fact...just not very many of them).
1/1/2015
guest Am I dreaming that we're up 6% in pre-market? Those call options I bought at 211 seem like a better and better idea by the minute. I just usually can't stand the stress of owning options, but at the same time I also can't stand that I reduced my exposure to 50% after we climbed to >255.
1/1/2015
guest Its up about $3 or 1.5%....gotta be careful with Yahoo, they often will misquote premarket and add yesterday's % to today's premarket.
Anyone think that Elon ending his family road trip in New York this afternoon or more likely tomorrow is also very handy to have him available to be live on finance shows if there is a big announcement - and I mean bigger than goldfish driving cars?
1/1/2015
guest Yes, it feels that some kind of upping the ante is in the air. Last year, when they had GAAP and non-GAAP Q1 beat, they announced it on April 1. If they ramped-up production as I think they did, they might revise their 6,400 deliveries guidance. I also doubt that yesterday's run-up was due to the NHTSA closure and Tesla's decision to outfit Model S with titanium shield. Perhaps there were some good rumors that were traded on.
1/1/2015
guest It's good to have the days of old back. If we close up like this, any chance of it setting off a squeeze?
1/1/2015
guest We're getting close to squeeze territory here, I think. It's shocking to me how dumb the market continues to be about the strength of Tesla's demand curve.
1/1/2015
guest To get a real squeeze we need a big catalyst. Finalizing partner/site of Gigafactory or early release of good Q1 delivery numbers or China reservations or final X unveiling
1/1/2015
guest Best day I've had in a long time. Portfolio up 20% on various calls. The June 245's I bought on Monday are crushing it. Feels good. How's everyone else holding up?
1/1/2015
guest My April 19 calls (which were red) and Sept 220s/240s are all doing quite well. The LEAPS I bought when TSLA was at the 240 level a couple weeks ago as stock replacers are still feeling a little red but looks like the recent 'medicine' has helped greatly. Overall, like many here, I had a great Jan/Feb, then down March. Hopefully April will continue to give us all tailwinds! Good luck all.
1/1/2015
guest Glad to hear, congratulations!
I'm in the red for the most part, since I made most of my latest LEAPS purchases in TSLA and various solars right after the latest TSLA peak. I don't have a lot in short-term options.
But I'm patient.
1/1/2015
guest I normally don't trade short term options, but this last Friday I bought the May 240's when I saw Elon was going to be on 60 minutes & was on their road trip, up 40% on the position today alone .
1/1/2015
guest That's a really cool call. I should learn how to read these events better.
1/1/2015
guest Despite it working out well for Lump, the 60 Minutes piece could have been a 'hatchet job' and the 40% up ended up 40% down. Such is the short term trading. It is addictive so you may have fewer headaches/ulcers sticking with the LEAPS!
1/1/2015
guest two days in a row of this last hour surge.
1/1/2015
guest Yup, my January 16 $230's LEAPs are up over %12 today, went from -1500 red to nearly +3,000 in the green

1/1/2015
guest You're right, actually I expected the 60 minutes piece to be bad. Instead, it turns out the interviewer's wife owns a Model S!
1/1/2015
guest No options here so I'm just up the 6%. I just enjoy reading this section through out the day.
1/1/2015
guest Nice to have the TMC investor group finally have a couple 'green' days and see lots of smiley face emoticons
1/1/2015
guest I still have some red from purchases I made in feb. I sold my jan 16 400's last week and used the cash to buy apr 210's when the stock was around 207. I'm really glad I did now they are up about 150% now.
1/1/2015
guest The banner on the CNBC right now: "Major averages have first 4-day win streaks in nearly two months."
So at least some of this run-up had to do with the market leaving behind some of the fear that was so palpable last week. TSLA looks like it really wants to go up, so as long as the general climate stays sane, I'm optimistic.
1/1/2015
guest Like I said I normally trade options 6+ months out & stay away from the short term stuff but at the end of last week we had lots FUD surrounding the Panasonic news not joining GF yet, the stock was oversold & the 60 minutes peace & the Norway video of 100's of cars ready for delivey combined with end of quarter market reversal..I liked my odds.
Position closed up 49.91% for the day.
1/1/2015
guest That was precisely my theory on Monday. Inherent strength in the company that was depressed by an overall market that may be emerging from Ukraine fear, Fed rate fear, and Chinese economy fear. Combine that with overblown fears of franchise laws impacting TSLA (that will be a speed bump for Tesla and nothing more, the public will not stand for bans long) and absurd "demand questions" made about the most desirable product I have ever owned. $208 bucks was a steal.
1/1/2015
guest agree with that. completed a delayed LEAPS roll just last week on the same thought structure. Sold the roll around $250, bought the roll on the way down, with the last bit added at the sub $210. Picked up some very cheap J16 $500s that ought to survive the upcoming ModX, GF, GenIII, China 'debacles'...
nice move Flux! Lump and others
1/1/2015
guest Not trying to say you were wrong.....you did GREAT!.....Just saying that your thesis was correct....but if it was wrong and the 60 minutes was a NADA financed hack job we might be looking at $192 TSLA and a 40%, or more loss.
Good call/trade on your part. Wish I had placed it!
1/1/2015
guest Thanks, Ken. March certainly wasn't this good to me, let's hope April showers bring May Q1 ER flowers for us, or something.

1/1/2015
guest That's it.
I posted the following on my twitter account not too long ago today:
@farzyness: Today is the tipping point where $TSLA will officially start to overtake @GM as USA's primary automaker. And it's inevitable #Tesla
Reasoning? GM's massive recall, Tesla's continued surge as THE American Automaker, Norway's continued share taking, and China's undeniable desire for the Model S. Really - one could make the argument that this started once Tesla existed as a manufacturer - but there's a lot of hints and pointers these last couple days/weeks that really back up this notion.
It's ok, you can call me crazy.
1/1/2015
guest Good day today! Nice to be back where we should be and heading in the right direction again.
Funny thing showed up in the corner of my screen on the ticker, had to check on the nasdaq.com site where every after-hours trade is listed... Yep, someone got a good deal and someone made a bad sell

1/1/2015
guest My jaw dropped when I read that GM's Recall is now set to exceed $750 million. They could literally be setting money on fire everyday instead of building cars and coming out ahead. I'd be lying if I said I understood how their stock price is still where it is.
1/1/2015
guest Can't say I would do that except for a bit of timing. My view is this inflection will occur over the 2015 year- but the thought is the same; so maybe my crazy-twitching is just a bit slower than yours

1/1/2015

guest It's good to hear that TSLA is back on the IBD Leaderboard. It gives the stock more exposure. For reference, IBD sent TSLA to their Cut List back in early November (Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2013 - Page 1263) and they didn't add TSLA back until today.
From the IBD Leaderboard today:
"Tesla Motors (TSLA) has come back to the Leaders List. The electric-car maker pulled back substantially from its Feb. 26 peak but now is finding support at the 50-day moving average. Thus, the stock is in a follow-on buy area. It becomes the first addition to Leaderboard following last week's purge in the list amid a weak market."

To allay our CO2 and OPEC fear.
All the critics and NADA first jeered
Thinking EVs were all quite queer.

The critics then realized while they all sneered

guest Enough with the poetry guys!![]()
Here is food for thought: GOOG/GOOGL splitting and introducing new C-class shares today - is this a way for them to free up capital/currency in the form of C-class (non-voting) shares to use for aquisitions/ventures/investments, without risk of losing control (all control is with the A-class shares)... In for example a Gigafactory or car company or what-not???
1/1/2015
guest Well, except that the split was announced two years ago but has been held up by lawsuits. Now maybe it makes what you suggest possible, but I doubt it was part of the plan when they first announced the split.
1/1/2015
guest Wow -- dead silence from you guys today? I'm starting to think "sell on the poetry jam, buy on the silence" is a good policy around here.
Incidentally, I bought June 245's monday when we were at $208 with dead silence on these forums, sold them all this morning for a 115% return after yesterday's exuberant run-up -- and am going to buy back later today after the Fed / NASDAQ carnage ends. I'm probably just lucky, but feeling good about this trade right now.

1/1/2015
guest My weekly 230's were up 10x this morning. But I had created a 230/235 spread yesterday and was debating if I should sell the 230's and on the pullback buy the 235's back. That would have been genius if I did it. But from previous experience being naked short weekly calls is deadly. So still holding them. Think I'll get the chance again soon so not too worried
I wanted to share this because I feel like most of the time people share successful trades but not failed or missed ones. But I like hearing about failed/missed trades b/c there is always something to learn.
1/1/2015
guest I had bought some weekly puts near the top today and sold them for a nice little gain a few minutes later. Of course if I had held them a little longer I would have nearly quadrupled my money. Something about betting against Tesla though causes me to get all antsy and uncomfortable even if it's with little day trades. Definitely feels like dirty money.
1/1/2015
guest Haha. Same here. It feels even worse to lose money betting against Tesla. The couple of times I bought puts as soon as they were like 10% in the red I panicked and sold. But I can have calls that are 80% in the red and not worry at all

1/1/2015
guest I hear you. I sold an 11 APR 240 Put a few days ago for a 100% gain. It was the bandaid for my LEAPS which have now clotted, somewhat. Historically, having a small percentage of medium range puts purchased near ATH's have proven a worthwhile expenditure for me.

1/1/2015
guest Yikes we are down double digits. What is going on here?!
1/1/2015
guest Wish I had more cash to deploy right now. June calls are tempting.
1/1/2015
guest The entire NASDAQ is getting absolutely destroyed right now. On days like these however, TSLA is usually down by a multiple vs. the Nasdaq of 3 or 4. Today it's not as aggressive, so I think we are good for more accumulation

guest What market giveth, market taketh.
1/1/2015
