Random Model S sightings part 1

Thanks, good tips. The odd part is that it looked right on the phone and on the computer. Next time...

Thanks for the pic's. For those of us who are far away from the factory we appreciate any and all, no matter the quality:biggrin:

I drove by the Telsa Store in Menlo Park late last night and noticed a black and a signature red Model S parked in the showroom. I'll be visiting the store today to check them out and will report back.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Sounds like the same two that made an appearance at the Google Earth Day event. Please report on the Red #65 in particular with the cloth interior.

We visited the Santana Row (San Jose) store Sunday to check out the new beta. It really is a step up in fit and finish. However, while driving on Stevens Creek towards 85, a white Model S came out of Santana Row and onto Stevens Creek behind us. That's our second sighting in the "wild."
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Hey there. Do you know which beta they have in Santana Row now? When I was there this weekend it was the "old" silver #29.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Off topic, but this is where the accelerometer can help (auto-rotating photos to the correct orientation).
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
We received a message Friday night that stated that
Unfortunately, I didn't check out the VIN.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Yeah, I got the same email, but once I (and goyogi - shout out) got there, we found out it was #29 and that marketing had been a bit over-zealous in sending out the email. Or that "new" meant "different from last week".
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Darn, and for a moment there I was getting ready to plan a hike down to Santana Row, thanks for saving me a trip!!
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Well, disclaimer: that was Saturday morning. Who knows what might have happened since then...
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Probably the betas we've seen a few weeks ago were not meant to stay there. But now they have a resident beta which is newer than the resident one they had before (which might have been from last year). Or something like that.

EDIT: So which color/leather/trim combination does their current beta have?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
If you happen by there and see an updated Model S, would you let me know please? I tend to stay around Menlo Park otherwise... :)
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Suuure... but I better post it at Model S Tour (Stores)) or I'll get the mods after me... since this about the "wild" Model Ss...
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
So true, you don't want to get on the Mods Dom's side! ;)

I wonder when one of our hackers is going to replace bonnie's avatar with the enforcer image.
  • 1/1/2015

    We have ... hackers??

(You all know making me a mod was an example of Doug's twisted sense of humor. He was tired of how quickly I took things off track. Brilliant move, really. ... but as Nigel pointed out, I only have to behave on my assigned forums. Yay.)

Thanks for the photos. The color is really nice. But I can see a lot of alignment problems. Or it's just the photos fooling me ....
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
The initial photos use a Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 10-22mm 1:3.5-4.5 This lens causes distortion because it is so wide-angled. I normally use it to capture as much of a room as possible when shooting interior real estate shots. It was mounted on a Canon EOS Rebel T1i DSLR body.

Later close-up photos used a Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 55-250mm 1:4-5.6 IS (Image Stabilizer) lens mounted on the same body.

    - russ

PS. Elon and team want to hear about any alignment problems you see so they can eliminate them. He said during the annual meeting he and the other founder's have already noticed over a 100 minor anomalies that "a normal customer wouldn't see". He worked with the staff over the past weekend to enumerate them and get them eliminated from non-insider customer car production.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Thank god it's not just me then :)
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Wow that is a nice car. Even without the red the body is really appealing. I'm not a huge fan of red, but that shade is very nice.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
"P85 Phase Current Amplification"??? What the heck is that? I'm an EE and I have no clue...
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
The most noticeable alignment problems I see is the chrome strips above the doors don't align (one strip higher than the other) with their neighboring strip; which probably means the doors themselves are not aligned correct either. Very noticeable on the driver's side panel photo. Not happy the gaps at the hatchback area where the panels adjoin, appears to have different gap widths between the different panel parts.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Very happy to hear about the attention to quality and thank you for the pic's!
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I'm pretty sure P85 is some workout program but not sure about the rest:smile: When did they come up with this P85 thing? Looks like this first car is the first time they displayed it.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
looks like there are definitely some body fit issues...really does not bother me though
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Well, the front hood looks a bit like it isn't completely closed, for example on photo #9. But I've never looked that close at a car's gaps, so I'm not sure which precision to expect.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I'm not too surprised by the badge. Like every car company, they want to have a way to differentiate the battery packs, which in this case could be looked at as trim lines. If you spring for the 85kw battery, you obviously have a more expensive car, hence they badged it so people will know. I will take it off, along with the Model S badge. I prefer a cleaner look.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Thanks for the pics engle! Looks great.

I'd have to really put the car under a microscopic eye to notice the slight mis-alignments people are mentioning.
What I'm seeing so far is an awesome looking car and I hope it operates as well as it looks.

    I am not on Facebook.

What is that object on the car roof?

    Same license plate as here.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Since it has manufacturer's plates it's assumed to just be a test car, so it's likely to be diagnostic equipment.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
BTW, I checked in @ Tesla NY today on Foursquare. When I got home I clicked the link from my Facebook wall and found all the pics people have taken there. So foursquare is a good place to monitor for new pics. Here are some stores to watch:

    Santana Row
    Menlo Park
    New York
    Westchester, NY

Feel free to add onto the list

    *edit* a few more:
    Fashion Island
    Newport Beach (not much here)
    Los Angeles

...thinking on it, this is probably better in the "stores" thread.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Could be a GPS antenna on the roof...

Yes, manufacturer plates, so likely a test car.

Noticed the darkened tail lights, too.
  • 1/1/2015

Didn't notice that. Wonder if it's a performance or if that's just a dev thing. I did notice it has no Tesla T

Interesting. It's good to know they aren't biting their nails trying to roll out the first ten this week. Seems like they are on good traction.

I wondered, while viewing that pic, why the panels are two-toned?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I am pretty sure it's a protective cover to keep the workers from scratching it.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Looking at the first picture, that looks like tape over the paint .. not a different color paint.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
    But who's car is it.....?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Yes, fender covers for if/when they lean over the fender.

I saw my fist 'wild' S yesterday around 6:30 in SF on 19th Ave heading NB
of course I was coming down from Eureka for a test drive today SB and wanted to do an illegal U ... but I must say It was pretty going the other direction and the lights definitely stood out among all of the Benz's and Audis. I think it was the lady with the champagne bottle at the release party. Sig red with dark wheels - lookin good!

    No, It wasn't her.
I think the guy(sorry) who made the funny video vin#10

TEG, have to ask, how on earth were you able to find that?

You can run from TEG, but, you cannot hide! Reminds me of the movie 'Eagle Eye' :)
  • 1/1/2015

  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Having grown up in Washington state, and after living in Seattle for over a decade in the past, prior to the reveal by TEG I was originally hazarding a guess that the photo was taken somewhere on Queen Anne or perhaps Magnolia. But to be able to pinpoint the address? Yikes!
  • 1/1/2015

Hmm Think it also knocked down the small cypress by the little fence. Isn't photoshop a great thing!!!! unless of course said cypress was planted after or inversely taken out before.............
  • 1/1/2015

maybe its not even a cypress. just a cypress looking bush of other sort............

  • 1/1/2015
    guest
yet another sighting. Sorry, but I couldn't stop to take photo as I was already late for work!

Black Model S at the bottom of Mount Hamilton Road in San Jose. Parked on the side of the road with the driver taking a photo of himself.

Sorry I just got a glimpse as I drove by...it was obviously a Model S by the DRL's.

Will try to get a photo next time!

    cheers,

    Love the jet black Roadster.

Umm, er... Jet black is a factory glossy/shiny paint that you could almost call "piano black".
The Roadster in the picture is a flat back non-stock finish by virtue of being wrapped in vinyl.
A forum member just bought it used from Louisiana and had it shipped over here to the SF bay area.
(I think there is an electric blue Roadster hiding under that wrap.)
  • 1/1/2015

Correct. Looking at it closely, the blue shows in a few places.

This may not be very uncommon, but I did see two Model S cars Wednesday evening, Aug 1. They were both driving the same direction on Arastradero in Palo Alto, going east bound. One was white and the other silver, I believe (it was dusk, so difficult to make out the actual color). Reason I say it may not be uncommon is that this happens to be near the Tesla Corporate offices (and the location of the Tesla Model S test drive in Palo Alto).
  • 1/1/2015

More than just "the corporate office". They have their primary engineering center there too.

That license plate reminds me of the 6000 SUX from Robocop.

Maybe the resolution isn't that great, but I had trouble seeing the adapter on the J1772 plug. Obviously it is there.

The license plate looks very similar to the ones on the cars at the Model S delivery event... I saw 000 and 001 in the video
