Social Chat - Short Term TSLA Movements part 18

Sigh I was tempted to get rid of mine this morning with the pop for some spare cash just so I could focus on work... Now I can't focus on work or sell them for a profit :(

Hedged my calls and bought some puts on this NJ FUD that is about to hit the media.

I was pissed when I saw the news that it passed, but then thought that it would probably be a good buying opportunity. Looks like it is going to be based on the trend in the past few minutes.

I hope you are right, but I don't think that the news has spread outside of a select few Tesla maniacs here on TMC.

Crap, wouldn't you know today is the day I'm away from my desk. Looks like the NJ FUD news hit Google's TSLA ticker at 11am EST. Shorts are pouncing. Looking for a bottom to add to my long position at this point.

Christie must be hard up for campaign cash.

I am deeply impressed with your short-term calls. I am still not convinced that it's possible to forecast short-term movements of the market, but you appear to be doing it again and again.

Wish I would have been at the computer today to try what sleepy did.

I added some more long term options today. I like that the premiums are dropping. :)

I am amazed we aren't eating dirt right now, 233 is way above what I was expecting with this negative sentiment and this "bad" news from new jersey, and this "high" price. (Honestly i don't think the news is that important, and the price seems appropriate given future potential).

    My current two explanations are
    1) that the news and sentiment is first felt here on the board and we'll see a drop tomorrow to 227.
    2) that there is some serious buying right now, and it's not by the shorts. They are looking for a technical move to fill the gap to 220/lower. I keep on coming back to the fact that once 2013 took down apple, people have started looking for a new apple and I think a lot of people have found it in tesla. No one is going to exit when the market cap goes from 10 to 20 billion, not while there's still potential for it to run to 100 to 200 billion.
So I'm hoping for #2 to be the case, but kind of resigned to #1 being the case tomorrow morning.

It's @tedismeiamted. If he took offense to it, I'd be surprised-- I can't really develop a full business case (not like I have to) in a limited amount of characters. Well that, and if he's replying to small fry like me, he's making the novice mistake of being too emotionally invested in his moves or he's doing what I was criticized of doing by not acknowledging opinions. I could care less. He manages Seabreeze, that's great-- but there were many money managers that were seasoned and "skilled" in 07-08. Age can develop skills and pigheadedness directly proportionately.

The irony is he defends Apple so vehemently now that it's outside of its momentum growth phase. Wayne Gretzky said it best, go where the puck is going not where it is.

    - - - Updated - - -

A little surprised too, but it just means that the store people are restricted to saying certain things. That and Texas is coping fine as well, it'll just be a matter of time-- it might even help Tesla allocate inventory better.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Aznt, I think that quote was by Wayne Gretzky. It certainly applies to the auto industry and EVs, as well as hockey.
Tesla is getting millions of dollars of free advertising generated by the NJ decision. The vast majority of news reports are pro-choice, pro-Tesla on this. Hope Tesla keeps their boutique showrooms open in NJ, even if they can't "sell them". Ironically the more difficult the Dealers make it to buy a Tesla, the more popular and in demand Tesla EVs will become. Thanks to this decision, the highest auto status symbol in NJ is now the Tesla, period. Long Tesla

    Best,

With this high short interest, I'm thinking a possible dip into the 220s on this meaningless NJ ban will be a good buying opportunity. Funny how just 3 months ago I was thinking the same thing about the 120s.

Edit: ...and 12 months ago about the 20s!
  • 1/1/2015

Wow im a fool thanks for that haha
  • 1/1/2015

I'm actually hoping we dip into the 220s tomorrow. I think a lot of shorts have that as their target and will start covering, and there are a lot of buyers patiently waiting there as well. So by going lower I think that could actually help it then go much higher! With Tesla in the headlines, it should attract the momo traders as well. We could be in for a crazy rest of the week!

FYI Reddit is currently exploding with white hot burning rage at this NJ / Christie fiasco. God bless my beloved nerd brethren.

I'm starting to think the underdog story has real legs. America loves a Cinderella story.

Still, going to get worse before the buyers show up in force. My gut says 220 bottom, and a gift of a buying opportunity. But my gut is also queasy and untrustworthy sometimes. :)

I closed out my TSLA trades this morning for a nice gain. Here is what I did since I had no cash to make any trades:

Sold weekly $230 calls x6 for $9.70 when TSLA was above $237 (I had long open LEAPS positions so no margin requirement)
Bought 30 $225 weekly puts and 30 $210 puts and had some cash left over still.

Yesterday I sold 5 puts from each to cover back 2 out of 6 short calls.

This morning I sold the rest of my puts to cover the calls and made a couple thousand dollars on this trade. I got a little greedy this morning hoping for a dip into the $220's but Wedbush spoiled the fun for me; it could have been a lot better. But I was able to cash out in time, and now my naked LEAPS should run nicely if the stock does in fact rebound.

Nicely done, and I just woke up. I just grabbed 2 september leaps and 150 shares in the mid 30's, nothing more complicated, and 4 weekly 257.5's- if the discussion about rebalancing plays out, they should help a bit.

any idea on why the sudden spike?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
yeah, the ones that expire tomorrow. I figure i'll grab a handful of them for a hundred or two hundred dollars late on friday when they are pennies, in addition the 4 that i have now, and if there is any news aftermarket on friday I'll short the pop and call my broker to exercise the options. (if it ends at 250, i'll buy the 252 strikes for 0.01 at 3:59, then if there's a spike to 255 i'll short at 255, call my broker to exercise the 252.5 strike options and make 249 dollars per contract). I dunno, i don't like taking advice off the boards of timing events without verifying, but this will cost me a total of 20 bucks.

Here's a link to an article without linking to Seeking Mediocrity:

Musk's Tesla Hires Chief Spokesman From Renault-Nissan - Bloomberg

Looks to be a great hire, reinforcements that I suggested in my letter to Elon last year.

This senior position has been vacant since George Blankenship retired last year. George, you'll recall, had this role first at Apple, where he created the Apple store concept -- which explains the deja vu moment when you walk into a Tesla store. Same mall, same design components, and the world's highest-tech iPad accessory.
This is a good move, provided that Sproule holds the course that George laid out. I'd worry, though, if he thinks that the communications and marketing of traditional auto manufacturers is "the right way".
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I completely agree on last point, Robert. It makes me initially nervous that Mr. Sproule is not a Silicon Valley hire, but that fresh perspective could actually be a good thing, and I trust that as an Elon Musk hire, Mr. Sproule will be first and foremost a professional who will adapt his communications style to fit the tech-centric brand and product of Tesla, rather than try to adapt Tesla to fit his industry experience. That's what any good manager should do.

Fortunately, Elon's skill sizing up management talent is one of his greatest strengths, and I trust he's picked another winner.

Remember also that Renault-Nissan is the most serious of the traditional auto manufacturers when it comes to electric cars.

Never underestimate the depths of hatred which people have for auto dealers. They consistently rank the least trusted, lowest customer satisfaction, worst consumer experience, etc etc etc. People dislike them more than politicians, lawyers, dentists, bankers, mechanics, everything. Occasionally they beat lobbyists. And here we're talking about lobbyists for auto dealers. So it's pretty clear which side of the debate the public is gong to come down on.

Even up to the point of stating support for Tesla and consumers having the freedom to interact without legislation favouring the special interests of car salesmen.

I have a suspicion that many market participants will actually forget, or have forgotten about the NHTSA issue. The massive amount of good news this year, combined with the drama in New Jersey, seems to have consumed a lot of the attention from investors.

The rapid news cycle and insatiable thirst for more information tends to wash away old stories.

I just read the blog and I don't get why Christie passed that law. Because at the end of the blog Elon says you will still be able to order a Tesla in New Jersey and have it delivered to New Jersey, you just can't order it from a Tesla store. When I order my Tesla (Gen 3) I will of course check it out at the store, but then go and order it from home. Am I reading that right?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Yeah, it sounds like all these "banned" states will work the same way. They can call the stores "galleries" where they show you the car and answer questions, but don't discuss pricing or make a sale. Free speech and all. basically what looks like a store is just a big walk-in brochure.

Then you either go home and order it from home, or drive to a neighboring state if you want to be walked through it. Then the car is delivered to the service center. The worst part is there is usually some tax or registration thing to navigate that is easy in hindsight, but intimidating going into it.

So all this chatter about "omg tesla is banned" just changes the way you buy the car a bit. But if you are buying a tesla, it isn't an impulse buy. TM isn't going to lose sales for this. NJ residents who are ready to buy will not be stopped by this very minor speedbump, just as it didn't stop me from buying in texas.

"banned" news stories= free publicity for TM and is just going to end up putting the dealers out of business for good. If they overstep their bounds, this will become a legal test case and it will not go well for the dealers. My casual understanding of the interstate commerce clause just doesn't seem to allow for a state to ban another state's product. Ford, GM and the like would be happy to sell direct. If they keep this up, the whole USA will go direct sales and we will wonder why the dealers association didn't see that coming.

Edit: Thinking about it more, the laws are probably fine for their original purpose, to protect established dealers from being pressured by the makers to sell their franchises. So maybe the whole thing wouldn't be vacated, but just clarified that they don't apply to makers who have never given a dealer license. That would be a fair and reasonable outcome for everyone.

    tesla iphone sales app

My advice...Tesla should just create an easy to use app. Android/Iphone .
Customer can use it to order right from the story or gallery or whatever they want to call it!
    Its modern technology at work.

I want to walk into Tesla showroom, see the finishes, colors, etc, ask questions re options, then I can order direct from the factory, and have it delivered. This was customer can order a new care while standing in the showroom, and NJ can't do anything about it! Take $$ via credit card
Mail me the paperwork for the loan or whatever

    This is bound to happen

Right now I can walk in with my ipad and use teslamotors.com to place an order. An app would make it that much easier

I keep monitoring "TESLA forum" from the most popular chinese auto website www.autohome.com.cn (NYSE:ATHM) on daily base. I can answer some of DaveT's questions from the posts of the TESLA forum.

waiting time for new reservations to get car
    >> if people reserve now, they were told to get the car by end of the year. For the people reserved last year, they can get care the first half of 2014.

    # people visiting the Beijing showroom
    >> it's really hard to tell unless you are personally in store for a week or so. But I definitely can see it's very busy store and people coming all over the China to Beijing store to make order and check the car even there is no test drive offerred at this point. The major factor affects the "# people visiting" is there is only ONE store for entire China now. By end of the year, tesla promised to open at least another 5 stores (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu) and test drive will be offered soon. I do expect the "# people visiting" and "# order" will grow significantly in 2015 considering China is the biggest luxury car market in the world and it accounts 49% sales of Benz S class.

what China/Beijing/etc incentives apply to Tesla Model S
    >> unfortunately none can apply. unless tesla can have joint-venture for model E in China in the future

how is the china version different than the U.S. version
    >> the operation system will be chinese version, it adds air filter to deal with PM2.5 at least

    date when deliveries start
    >> I heard it's from end of March. So far I havn't seen any model S officially delivered yet. Actually that's my big concern for Q1 ER, what if tesla delivered none or only a couple of hundreds model S to China in Q1?

I have a question about buying some Tesla leaps (Jan. of 15). I am quite deep in Tesla as a long but wish to take advantage of this dip and buy some leaps (which I have never done before). I see options prices as of Sunday that are: (I understand they'll change with the market by tomorrow)
    Strike Price: $215.00, Ask $52.00
    Strike Price: $220.00, Ask $49.70
    etc.

If I add the strike price to the asking price, I see that the $215 strike price is a better deal if TSLA is worth at least $267.00 when I execute (I would break even at that point). At the higher strike price, I risk slightly less, but the value of the stock needs to be a few dollars more for me to break even. For me, the $215 strike price seems to make more sense because I'm willing to risk losing a bit more in order to have a better chance of getting into the money. Do I have a reasonable understanding of things as I explain things?

Now, looking at the leaps another way, I see that Jan of 2016 calls are only about $15 more expensive than Jan of 2015 calls. I suppose an investor has more leverage if buying the Jan of 2015 calls because you can buy more for the same money, but the Jan of 2016 look like a more sure bet, with an entire year to rise an extra $15. I'm thinking that buying some Jan of 2016 calls might be a good way to get my feet wet in options.

Your advice to an options newbie would be much appreciated. My exposure to options will be rather small compared to my existing exposure as a TSLA stockholder at present.
    thx

your understanding looks reasonably good Papafox and currently with moderate IV and smaller J16 premium (relative to more than double time), I would opt for J16s currently. Also, note the odd strikes ($215 vs $220 for example) often have larger spreads due to lower volumes. I normally stick with the higher volume strikes, but not a huge consideration for longer holds. Also, consider using a higher strike with more contracts- the return will be higher assuming continued growth in the underlying.

So today did not unfold as I expected. I thought that unless Putin was threatening invasion the markets would take Obama's sanctions in stride. They seemingly didn't.

I thought that in the absence of negative macroeconomic news, TSLA would be up on the Baird upgrade.

I thought JASO would rightly be up around 13-14 on a stellar earnings report.

I certainly did not think the company that makes these things would be up 23%. KNDI ? Really, market? Welcome to the EV of the future -- the dream car of 1972! :scared:

Firmware 6.0 when? Elon mentioned it during Europe trip late Jan, then in Feb 9 he tweeted about software update coming soon. It's been more than a month now.. Should be coming soon.. maybe waiting for NTHSA clearance, which probably is delayed due to troubling GM recall?
Twitter / elonmusk: Tesla V6 software upload coming ...

When do you guys think we hear about Gigafactory update? They've raised the 2B capital, what's next?

Also, when do you guys think we hear about the whitepaper blog that will debunk graphite BS, and debunk the myth about BEV dirty?

When do 1st quarter earnings come out?

Last year was May 8. They'll likely announce the exact date a couple weeks prior.

TSLA seems very news-driven, so absent some unforeseen major event, I don't expect major price moves.

NHTSA clearance, Gigafactory details, and Model X will drive the stock higher.

I also think there will be Giga-shock value driving up share price if China sales go crazy.

Indeed, this stock moves based on news alone, it seems... No news/bad news/delayed news drops the price, and pretty much everything else makes it go up. Which is why I think the factory news didn't really hit as positive to the price as most of us expected because it was basically no news/delayed news... As in we have to wait yet again for some unknown date to get anything more than we already knew.

i think the best thing is that their capital raise was not perceived as a negative on the company (except by a select few crazy shorts who think that rising production numbers somehow equates to lower demand... Not saying all shorts are crazy, just the ones touting that line).

Well I found out what happens when you snooze and let in-the-money options expire in an IRA account (not margin enabled) at Schwab. I had 10 weekly contracts, at a 230 strike price to try to catch a quick bounce off the 20day MA. Of course, I mistimed it and I needed 2 more days...

But, I snoozed through the expiration and they bought me $230,000 worth of TSLA for me on Monday. No, I didn't have that much cash on hand... So I had to sell shares to get back to positive cash, which means I am a free-rider selling non-settled shares, which means they slapped me with a 90 day settled cash trading restriction, but I also couldn't hold until it settled...

So the moral is, don't let calls expire.

Thanks for the report. Quite fascinating really, you'd think they did something smarter than that. But it's probably in the terms of service somewhere. Still, buying 230k on margin on your behalf seems a bit short-sighted. Hope it won't hit you too hard.

It's been a few years since the rules changed to automatically exercise ITM options. Since they were ITM, AustinEV should have been able to sell them before expiry. People used to get REALLY upset when their ITM options were allowed to expire because the broker couldn't answer the phone quickly enough. But I think the real moral of the story is that you simply shouldn't snooze around options. If you need a nap, take care of them first.

I wish they had done it as a "cashless exercise" where instead of buying the full amount, they just bought enough to cover my cash and held the rest to cash out at the market open on Monday. I know why the can't; if the stock went up or down Schwab would experience that delta.

I wish the stock had gone up 10% yesterday, so it becomes a funny story of how I backed into $xx thousands of dollars by messing up. As it stands, I just got 2 days of WAY more stock exposure than I expected, which is fine since it went up a bit. Sadly I am still down overall for the trade since I bought those options at a really terrible time last week, so my breakeven point was $243. It essentially still would be, if I could have kept the stock. Curiously I only sold enough to bring my cash balance to positive since I was on the phone with them, instead of bringing my share balance back to what it was before. So as it stands now, I have deployed the last of my cash in shares at a cost basis of 243... I used the awesome power of options to buy shares at higher than market I guess.

I accidentally bought 100 march otm contracts of tsl yesterday on my phone and realized my mistake when I got the email notification that they filled. I ment to buy jaso and forgot I was looking at the tsl option chain last and placed the order based on being two strikes otm. I sold them an hour after I bought them for a round trip loss of 50% including fees. I probably could have made out if I kept them until today but the decay is so bad that I figured it was best to just resell them right away. *smack head*

I am back in the TSLA weekly speculation game. Bought some weekly $250s on the early morning pull back to $239.

I bought some 242.50 weeklies this morning at 237. Down a bit but planning to hold hoping for some green today/tomorrow after the FED talk.

I doubled down in the $236 area, and also waiting to see what the Fed says. I am not very optimistic on TSLA over the next couple of days, since it seems to be consolidating very nicely.

You are not optimistic? Or you are optimistic?? I just would have read the consolidation as a positive for tesla.

I am not optimistic on a big move over the next two days. The consolidation is a very bullish sign and I am optimistic that we will see a nice rally within the next 8 weeks. In the mean time, don't be surprised if we see the gap fill around $218.

I'm confused, you doubled down, but don't expect a move this week? Why double down then?

Funny, this is the first time in awhile I didn't check the forums before making a trade, and I log in to find out that Sleepy and I did exactly the same thing today -- a $250 weeklies shot in the dark (though I think I bought a little cheaper :) ). I figured that if Yellen's comments propel things up and we happen to get a free news item, it could certainly happen. If it doesn't, I spent almost nothing on these weeklies anyway, and I'll try again another time.

You never hit the target if you never take a shot, and as Sleepy says, sometimes all you need is 1 hit in 5 shots to pay for the play.

Caveat: I certainly do NOT recommend this strategy for everyone. It's just an experiment I'm trying lately.

Just brought my Roadster in for service, couple things of note:

Obviously, they were low on loaner cars, as always, and so I ended up getting a rental (I wouldn't have taken one, but they had a Leaf at the nearby Enterprise, so I wanted to try it out). They had a ton of cars ready for delivery, as one would expect near end of quarter.

More interestingly, though, is that one of two Roadster techs was away today to get himself a Chinese visa. Apparently he's being sent to China very soon. So it sounds like they're all hands on deck, which is great to hear.

Well, today does not look like it will be a good one based on Asian/European markets. Probably only good if you are looking for a decent place to add shares/options.

Bailed on my 240 weeklies first thing. Broke even.....I just can't read short term moves right now.

LARRY PAGE: I Would Rather Give My Billions To Elon Musk Than Charity - Business Insider

By the time Model E comes out, the world will be producing 100 million cars per year.

Today there are 1 billion ICE cars on the road. By 2050 there will be 3 billion cars on the road.

We will need 100 Gigafactories by 2050 to convert all ICE cars to pure electric (assuming each Gigafactory producing 30 GWh of batteries per year)

I would like to see Larry Page donate one Gigafactory to Tesla ASAP. (don't even have to donate, just finance it at 0% interest rate will be fine for now)

Since the two founders of Google are good friends with Elon Musk, it would not surprise anyone if Google did something big with Tesla one day soon.

Saw a few large buy orders for TSLA and JASO at the bell today.

I grabbed some 240 weeklies because I'm crazy like a fox.

I also got my letter today on the expected NEMA 14-50 adapter replacement, and it was labelled as a "Recall" with official NHTSA language and contact info. I did a double take at first when I opened the letter, but calmed down once I saw it was only for the NEMA adapter replacement. I'm assuming this has been priced in, but I'm also assuming there will be at least a few "OMG RECALL FUD" articles written. I actually take this as a good sign that NHTSA is working closely with Tesla and we'll get the road hazard all-clear soon.

Another user posted a PDF of the letter, dated March 11th, in case anyone wants to read it.

    like a fox?

    or like Flula

I got the mail w/the recall right as my car was being returned. The Ranger said they keep getting asked for adapters but they aren't even made/out yet. Pretty lame I thought TM said they 'mailed them' but they weren't even out yet?

Volume was really low again today. My stock ticker indicates far less than half the normal number of TSLA shares changed hands by the close of normal trading.

I think think people are waiting for news as there are no rumors to buy on.
