That is absolutely the conclusion I reached looking at this morning's price action. First day in a long time I can remember seeing Chinese solars and even SCTY up as well as NASDAQ up and VXX down, while TSLA down on no news. This kind of "coiled spring" could make for a massive thrust upwards given the right impetus, but I'm not willing to put dollar bets on that just yet.

Edit: Google is dragging the NASDAQ up like a boss, looks like trying to take TSLA along for the ride a bit.

Mario, here's the Nasdaq webpage for TSLA short interest: Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) Short Interest - NASDAQ.com

The next report will come after the market close on April 25th based on shares settled by April 15th.

The TSLA short interest based on trades settled by March 31st was 25,775,931 shares or 29.47% of the float.

Ughh, so I've read through many analysts opinion and my consensus is that no one knows where the bottom is. Maybe we've just witnessed it @ $185 and things are starting to recover? Tomorrow will tell. And what Elon says this weekend as well. By the way, is he still in China this weekend? Because SpaceX was delayed until Friday...

His first event was 4/20 which is the opening ceremony of the auto show. I assume that is evening. Last I heard chance of favorable weather for launch on Friday was 40% but they have a backup Saturday at Noon PDT. That should give him just enough time to make a Sunday evening event if he leaves right after the launch.

This may not be "mainstream sentiment" here but I'm just really happy I could load up on stock: I was a bit concerned to see the stock price over the past months and felt bad about "having missed the boat" a little. I bought some stock yesterday so things are good now.

Never forget, TSLA is a wild beast doing outrageous moves. But if you buy and hold, at least so far it gives you phenomenal returns...

Kind of sad AH action, likely due to GOOG (or is it GOOGL now), with its stock down 6% on a poor Q2. Oh well, hopefully there will be more good news by tomorrow's open to override this.

I have a boat load of shares....and don't mind selling covered calls for some protection, but I haven't because it seems like everyday I am expecting some massive news from TM which will squeeze the shorts and unlead the coil...GF partner/MX ready/etc.

Nice to see the share price recover a bit today. My hunch is that TSLA is a coiled spring: good earnings and exciting product news should propel TSLA back up. Media sources are still bashing and people seem spooked, which to me says things have bottomed out.

Investing is like physics to me. On a large scale, we have Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which breaks down at the small scale, or the realm of Quantum Mechanics. With investing, in a large time scale, companies rise or fall based on their merits. On a small time scale, this completely breaks down and everything becomes chaotic. I never play at the Quantum Mechanics level  I am not good at guessing probabilities

To me investing resembles surfing. Up and down with the ocean (market), rising tide lifts all the boats (bull market), it is great fun to catch a good wave. TSLA is a tsunami. A thrill of a wave.

GOOGL catches a cold and drags down TSLA with it? The companies are totally unrelated.
It's just another excuse for a sell off, for no reason (again).

I don't know why shorts would want to keep their position going into the long weekend especially with the China events. I hope to see a strong close today and hoping for big moves next week. I still don't think the China events news has gotten out yet. Hoping it will soon. Loaded up and ready to roll :)

MarketWatch (part of Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal), for some reason has it's story from November on the Tennessee fire showing up at the top of TSLA headlines on Yahoo finance. I guess this could simply be an accident. Let's see how long before the 5 month old "Tesla burning!" headline is taken off the top of TSLA's news feed.
  • 1/1/2015

i assure you this was not an accident. any tactic seems ok to market watch.

I guess shorts are just reminiscing. I'm reminiscing too, 52-week low is $44.54 today. It won't be long until that skyrockets upwards. But seriously, that kind of thing doesn't happen by mistake. That is insane.
  • 1/1/2015

I noticed this too, while in a meeting. My heart skipped a couple beats, that link is BS. I actually read the full first line which stated TSLA was down 7%. :cursing:

Haha me too. I read it and saw Tennessee. Then I looked at the date. I figured someone was getting desperate. After I saw it I just smiled. It's just more confirmation for me that the worst is over. I took it as a sign to buy more. Too bad all my investment funds are deployed right now.

While I have to profess to having very little trading strategy other than 'luck', I feel that these types of blatant attacks indicate a real fear by the 'opposition' (shorts mostly, coupled with NADA types and big oil) and that we are in for a nice burst up in TSLA.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
I sent a tweet with link to the MarketWatch article to Tesla's and Elon's accounts.

there's a blatant FUD piece out this evening by a Motley Fool contributor whose previous work had been quite reasonable and well researched. it sure seems like someone wanted to keep Tesla under $200 going into the long weekend and help maintain the story line that it's in the midst of a continuing selloff.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
While NADA clearly feels threatened by Tesla I don't think Big Oil does. At least as of about 6 months ago I don't even think they were on the radar of Exxon. A lot has changed in in 6 months and over the next few years I am sure they will be on their radar and be a real concern to them but I just don't think any of this FUD is spread by them. (That being said that is one company and their are many players in Big Oil)
  • 1/1/2015

Loved that article, risk to tesla someone gets hurt. Of course someone will at some point. It's funny the car is so safe that they need to point that out only advertises the safety profile.
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
IMO I don't think big oil will worry about tesla for a few years yet. The auto industry is growing quickly and the existing fleet still has 10-15 years of life left and best case scenario is tesla will have 10% of new car sales in 10 years. Now if other manufacturers start making compelling electric cars then I think they might start getting concerned sooner. I hope that happens but it doesn't look too promising yet.

I'm really excited about China. I just picked our daughter up from youth group tonight and I parked next to a sweet R8 and a bunch of Asian 20 something's were walking across the parking lot and all of their faces lit up and when I got out of the car they were exclaiming that it was a Tesla and they were all checking it out.

I have seen people of all ages fawn over our car before but never to this extent. They were so fascinated I was fascinated just watching them.

It took me 5 minutes to get our daughter and they were all still standing 10 feet from it smoking and still commenting on it.

The past week have been loading up on some weeklies for this week. Kept averaging down at any opportunity I could. They're doing well this morning but I'm definitely holding through tomorrow. Actually almost added some $222.5 weeklies for .20 this morning and they're already almost a 4 bagger. Missed out on that one!

Hoping to recoup some of the past weeks losses. But if news isn't good tomorrow then this could hurt a lot :)

I think so too. The stock has been pretty beaten up. Lots of shorts piled in. The China stuff came out last week on here but it wasn't really picked up main stream. I think as it starts coming out it should hopefully give a boost.

Nflx just posted a mild beat and is up 6% after hours. For another momentum stock which has been beaten up lately, this is good news. Could help to pull Nasdaq up and thus tsla tomorrow, if tsla doesn't have its own good news to go on.

Good day overall...especially news of a lot of interest in partnering for the giga factory. regardless, my short term options play turned out badly. i closed out early this am for a roughly 50% loss. as much as i would like for elon to preannounce something awesome, i'm not counting on it which is why i closed the position. i thought yesterday's interview would have been the moment. will see.

I am selling half my 202.50's tomorrow, hopefully they will be double what I paid for them. With first deliveries in china I think we may get another small catalyst tomorrow, possibly even a hint to china demand. I hope we do so I can sell half for double. If that pans out I may hold the rest for the 100th supercharger ceremony.

That'd be awesome. I was actually wondering this morning how many China reservations would be considered great, good, etc. 10k reservations would obviously be great, but I don't think something like 1k or 2k reservations would be considered "great".

I guess what's also important is the rate at which reservations are increasing. Wonder what other numbers people think would be considered great vs good?

I didn't see 10K reservation yet. But 5k+ is on one of the report. It's reasonable to see 5K+ in just one Beijing Store, no test drive and no delivery yet.

fwiw, I'm no longer keeping some cash for trading shares available for 170s. I just put all but 20% of the trading share cash I had in at 206.28 (had already picked up a chunk of it sub 200). Elon's Panasonic comments was the deciding factor for me, and earnings call is just a couple of weeks away. I think roughly half of this selloff were based on Panasonic's moderating comments. Now Elon said something encouraging. Not concrete, not to be resolved before 2 or 3 months, but I think one advantage we have is our an accumulated experience with Elon... I think Panasonic's coming in on the GFactory is more likely than the market thinks.

Still holding onto my weeklies. Being a bit greedy. Hoping for a HOD close where I'll probably sell half and leave the rest. Or I'll sell all and buy a little more that's further OTM. Not sure yet. The news out today and videos are just too good and I don't want to make the mistake of selling too early like I have in the past.

Sold the 210 weeklies I bought on Thursday for just under 5x gain, rolled them up to 230s at half the price I originally bought the 210s for, same number of contracts, just in case this week continues to be stellar.

It's a weird juxtaposition reading stories on M5board where the guys talk about how appreciative they are of an M5's integrity in an accident. I hope to someday be able to tell my (future) kids about how we dangerously used to stick engines in the front or back of a car.
  • 1/1/2015

Congrats! I picked up 210's on Thursday as well but sold 'em early at the open for a double. 5 bagger would've been nice...wish I was stuck in a meeting this morning or something!
  • 1/1/2015

There will be other people telling their kids the opposite. Some guy on SA was arguing on one of my articles about how he would prefer to drive a 3* safety rated car with an engine in front as opposed to a Tesla.
  • 1/1/2015

Yeah, I had a GTC order in to sell them at 4 and 6, but before I went to sleep I changed those to 6 and 9, and both filled...then I ended up selling the rest for 9.75 or something. Bought at like 1.90. I found that being awake near market open was just stressing me out, so I decide the night before what I would be happy with and then sleep through most of the trading day.

Yeah, that's why they put bricks in the airbag compartments, because it's always better to hit a hard object rather than a soft one.

Easiest way to explain this (though it's better in person because people on forums refuse to learn anything) is to ask: if you're going to run head first into a wall, what would you rather have strapped to your head, a brick (engine) or a pillow (crumple zone)? If they object to the mischaracterization of a crumple zone as a pillow, then say a plastic water bottle or something. Something stiff, but which will crumple to absorb impact.

Anyway, their car is already engineered for this. It's engineered to have the engine drop out of the way as best it can so that it isn't in the way in an accident, because it's unsafe to have it be in the way in the accident. That's why the safety ratings are what they are.

As you can see from my screengrab from nasdaq.com the trade did happen, 400 shares at $207. Someone put in a poor limit order or some kind of AH market order and it executed. So don't blame Google :)
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Does that happen a lot in after hours trading?
  • 1/1/2015
    guest
Actually yes. I looked at the individual quotes and in between all the $218-something trades there were for example 4880 shares traded at $213.0977 at 16:07. One minute before $218.70, one minute after $218.31. So instead of trading at say $218.50 these 4880 shares were sold at $5.4 less per share, that's actually $26k for the trade. Now if I were the buyer that was a real easy $26k. If I were the seller I would not be happy.

  • 1/1/2015

I don't think that these trades are happening after hours. I think that it is a "late print" of a trade that happened during market hours, early in the morning.

These "late prints" happen a lot, but you only notice them on days when the stock makes a big move. If TSLA was flat all day, then you might see a "late print" but you will not notice it because the stock did not deviate a lot throughout the day.

I am about 99.999% sure that no one got that good of a deal on TSLA at $207 in AH today. The AH bid/ask is very narrow right now and TSLA is pretty liquid in AH.

Congratulations to all of those who held long and strong in TSLA, and especially to those who added more last week or even yesterday below $200. I have my own "weeklies" story to tell. But first wanted to mention that my daughter was born on Friday (now I have 2 under 2 :) ) about an hour after market close, so I give her all of the credit for the rally in solar and TSLA over the past couple of days

Yesterday morning, after digesting all of the news on TSLA, and especially after a bunch of us "called" a local market bottom last week based on price action, I looked at the TSLA price action and noticed that it was very weak. I thought that I would take advantage of this and put in a couple "not so insignificant" TSLA weekly call option orders:

    TSLA $210 @ $0.82
    TSLA $220 @ $0.26

The first order did not get filled, because the low trade for Monday was at $0.90. This would have been a 10-bagger right now, but...

My second order got filled almost perfectly at the bottom; the low for the day was $0.23 but I highly doubt that my order would have been filled completely at a lower price.

I sold a quarter of those calls this morning for a quick 24-hour 4-bagger to get my capital back. I then sold a little more for a 6-bagger, a bunch more for a 10-bagger, and finally some more for a 15-bagger at $3.90.

I cashed out most of my position, but am still holding 20 contracts for good measure. I might try to cash out half for a 20-bagger tomorrow morning if we see an early morning spike without any news. If there is some unexpected great news then I will try to hold them and roll them forward to a later expiration date if I am lucky enough to get them deep ITM.

If only trading was always this easy. I put up less than a paycheck's worth of funds and 24-hours later made more money than I made all year at my job.

Now that I made this post, TSLA will go down tomorrow and the remaining contracts will expire worthless :)

It has been a good few days for the sleepyhead family.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions to this forum. Without all of your information, I would not have pulled the trigger on those weeklies yesterday. Don't want to single anyone out, because it really is a team effort here on TMC.

Congratulations on the baby sleepyhead! I have two with less than two years between and a third one on the way now, luckily it will be more than 2 years between the two youngest ones. Great trades, the money will come in handy :)

Congratulations on the new baby (1st) and the big trades (2nd)! Having a child really puts all of this ($) into perspective.

I loaded up on weeklies Thursday, yesterday and this morning and have cashed out half of them. Not nearly as much of a bagger as you, but I am pretty happy with it, especially after the sea of red over the past month! (still way down overall compared to 6 weeks ago)

Thanks guys, and best wishes to to everyone expecting another child. I would love to have a third child, but then daycare would literally cost more than I bring home from work. The only chance for another kid at my age (early 30's) is for TSLA and solar to go up in a hurry, since I wouldn't want to have kids after 35. Those who have grandmas around to babysit are extremely lucky.

@pz1975 - I think that most, if not all, of us are down a lot in the last month. I still have a long ways to go to get back to where I was just 5 weeks ago. But to keep things in perspective, I am still up ~1000% in the last year or so, so all is good. If I can go up another 1000% from here, I will be thinking early retirement. At the same time investing in high-flying TSLA and solar stocks is a recipe for disaster in a downward market, especially if we hit a recession. A lot of people have gotten burned in the past bear markets, so we have to continue putting our efforts into monitoring macro-economic conditions, since those are more important than company specific details.

Congratulations on your newborn sleepyhead. It was such a pleasure reading your post with great news on two fronts. Your trading wins are also well deserved.

About TSLA going down, if it does it will go up afterwards. IMO we will be on a roller coaster for as long as there are equally strong convictions amongst bulls and bears.

    Thanks.

If you have shares, then it is not a problem. But a lot of people here play options and LEAPS (as stock replacement). I remember how AAPL went from $200 to $80; and this process took over a year. All who use mostly options will get wiped out; which was the case with many AAPL investors in 2008. AAPL went on to $700 just three years later.

Buwan, the drop was caused by those dang poems that popped up on this thread. Fortunately, the offenders took a break and the stock recovered. Whew!

    Sleepy, Congrats!

I remember that all too well- rode it all the way down and all the way back up. Hoping those great depression events are once in a lifetime. I don't think Tesla or the Solars would survive such an event. The most frustrating part was Apple was making billions every quarter without a fail while the stock moved with the market- You're right we must watch vigilantly -- many congratulations and thanks for your contributions!

Congrats on the newborn @sleepy and congrats to all the longs! Today was a great day. And now that you mention stories about babies, I'll actually take the credit for todays rally since it's my daughters 2 yr birthday. Got to spend the day with her and will be going to Chucky Cheese later :) I also have a 1.5 month old son. So I'm in the 2 under 2 club :)

Most of my trades over the past week became 2x - 5x'ers today. Sold half and am still hanging on to half. Will use some of the profits and enjoy some time with the family and do some work around the house. Rest of the profits are going into JASO ;)

Also wanted to say thanks to all the TMC members for their contributions. Especially those who have been keeping us updated with the China news over the past several days!

There is no inspiration when TSLA is going down.

How about we start some real games here. All option players can place short bets, and the poets will start churning out some verses. :-D

Then we will go quiet and reverse the trades.

You guys get all the fun and the gains.

I am so tempted to do options trading, I have done a few trades and it is a thrill. What is required is a lot of pain tolerance and a lot of money (to afford losses).

For me the time difference is the biggest obstacle to doing more options trading, otherwise that seems to be the one of the best games there is.

    Congratulations sleepyhead;
Please convert part of the profit to TSLA shares and give those to your kids; keep those for 20 years, they will have a good head start in life

Nice bump from the China delivery news today! I hope this is the beginning of a series of news events that will keep interest in the company high.

Wow, congrats on MiniSleepyhead v2.0! You certainly deserved a home run options play, so congrats on that too. Put some of that aside for her, maybe? :)

    Good good stuff.
