guest Lets end the day in the green

1/1/2015
guest Well, TSLA made a good attempt to do as you asked. Ultimately, I am happy to see good resistance at 142+. I think next week will be very interesting.
1/1/2015
guest I'm joining the lottery! Bought my first short term (weekly) options today; 2 x $150 Jan 24's, for $2,96. Selling 1 for 6.00, as soon as possible... I hope for a big gain on the 2nd one  My other options are 95% leaps Jan 16. Still holding my stocks, bought for $30 in the end of 2012
1/1/2015
guest Well. I am also a 'newbie' to short term options. So, we can commiserate or rejoice together. I would welcome you but don't feel it is my place as a 'member in training'. Hope we get a positive catalyst next week....we shall see.
ADDITIONAL INFO: Not sure if this has been posted....From TM about charging/adapter
http://www.teslamotors.com/about/press/releases/tesla-provides-customers-upgraded-charging-software-and-adapter
1/1/2015
guest So Tesla decides to send out ~$100k worth of plugs to do right by customers, and TSLA loses $700m in market cap before rebounding a little bit. Sounds about right, doesn't it?
I feel a big rally starting on Monday next week. Then Monday evening hopefully Panasonic gives us some good news and we should be in for a very fun Tesla Tuesday. Good luck to all TSLA gamblers, you know who you are.
1/1/2015
guest Three days ago, I believed that Tesla would have to move down in the short term before it made another upward rally. Therefore, I sold a bunch of calls (against my shares). I thought the contraction was to 147, and yesterday when it hit 147 I sold 144-strike puts dated next week because I thought that was the bottom.
Today looks much more solid, and the move away from 142 was very strong once it got going. It wasn't like the previous drop when there were actual fi**s , where it would not rally at all after a hard drop. I think that what helped us today was that there really was no bad news, but also the ridiculously high short float. Whatever it was, this move "flushes the system" and gets us ready to go up- it flushes out those who were iffy about holding and it gives buyers confidence.
I added 6 more calls in the 152 and 155 strike range for two weeks out and a couple hundred more shares. I'm sitting on a loss for those calls because I bought them when the IV was higher this morning. However, I think that after this solid of a move the move up will take us far enough up that anything in the 150's will move into the money, possibly 160's too.
1/1/2015
guest Likewise, I bought some March calls today near the bottom of the price range. IV is relatively low, and I think the price is set to rebound solidly, especially on what I expect will be a interesting press conference at next week and an out-perform on deliveries.
1/1/2015
guest I was thinking the same thing.
Most of the public and general investing world is still very unfamiliar with EVs. It's my experience unfortunately that where unfamiliar technology is concerned, people tend to assume the worst.
1/1/2015
guest Change makes people uneasy and they push back against it. Unfortunately.
1/1/2015
guest Off topic, but Investment related. Germany has zero capital gains tax? I've been investigating my potential permanent residence country and this just came up, but it is not very clear to me.
1/1/2015
guest Switzerland has 0% capital gains for sure, I am not sure on Germany though.
1/1/2015
guest Investment income (dividends and capital gains) are taxed at a flat rate of 25% in Germany. It is a withholding tax (the German bank withholds it for you, whenever dividends or capital gains occur).
1/1/2015
guest Thanks for the clarification Johann. I asked this because I read somewhere that after 1 year the cap gain tax is 0%. Sounds weird to me so I had to ask. It's hard doing research from outside the country. Can't trust anything.
1/1/2015
guest It was exactly like that until End of 2008. 2009 the withholding tax of 25% flat on capital gains was introduced, no matter how long the stock was held.
1/1/2015
guest In Estonia you can set up a standard bank account as investment account and it's tax free as long as the withdrawals are below deposits. Therefore if you invest 100k and make 200k out of it you pay no tax on the first 100k that you withdraw. If you keep reinvesting it's a nice thing as you have to absolutely not worry about taxes. Once the withdrawals exceed deposits you pay the usual income tax which is 21% only on the excess amounts. You need to declare the deposits and withdrawals every year in ~March, but not the actual trades (unless it's forex, that is considered withdrawals and deposits). So if you make a one time payment in there and don't withdraw anything then sadly you still have to declare account maintenance fees (monthly fees usually of a few eur) so 12 lines in the tax return that are auto generated by the bank and sent to the tax office at your request so in reality you don't need to fill anything

1/1/2015
guest ... Which is one of the reasons why it's not easy to just move there...
1/1/2015
guest Ah, thanks everyone. Now. I understand why my lawyer said Singapore...
1/1/2015
guest For all of you Americans out there, just know that if you do move to another country then you still have to pay US taxes. Their are foreign tax credits and/or deductions that will minimize double taxation but in the end you are going to get screwed on US taxes by living in another country. You are almost always better off living in the US and earning that money here than any other country.
1/1/2015
guest Would that still be the case if you obtained citizenship of the other country? Just interested in knowing this not looking to move.

1/1/2015
guest Yes. The only way to get around paying US taxes is to drop your citizenship. Even non-citizen green card holders have to pay US taxes on money earned abroad.
If you drop your citizenship then you might never be able to enter the country again though.
1/1/2015
guest Hmm, was really hoping for TSLA to rebound a bit this morning. The weekly 155s are decaying rapidly at this point. If we just bump along the $143 bottom for the week, at what point do you sell for salvage? Or do you just write them off as a loss?
I've got 1/2 set to sell at about $1.50 since that breaks me even overall. I was hoping a small spike would trip that and then the rest of the options I could let ride.
1/1/2015
guest Well there is tomorrow's press conference so you might want to wait for that.
1/1/2015
guest http://www.freep.com/article/20131217/BUSINESS03/312170161/north-american-international-auto-show
1/1/2015
guest Yes, of course. I'm not panicking, just trying to decide what my exit strategies might be before hand. I'm fortunate that my job gives me moments where I can watch the stock off an on throughout a the day, but that's not always a given. I've failed to think stuff through before and missed selling (or buying) opportunities when work was busy. I'm better off setting up some triggered transactions.

1/1/2015
guest I just bought some more 150's and 155's. I strongly believe we are going to get a positive catalyst or two this week. As you can see I hope I am right.
1/1/2015
guest Cool, well being that the norm seems to be to put new vehicles under wraps I am thinking we aren't going to see any Model X. Since the car with the ski rack is powered off and the frunk doesn't open I am thinking an AWD Model S and/or larger battery could still be announced. Maybe the stock is down today because there is nothing under wraps? I don't know I haven't followed the automotive industry until Tesla came along.
1/1/2015
guest And the statement that "Elon is still working out his schedule" is a bit concerning too...
1/1/2015
guest Comparatively there is almost no volume on the stock today.
Wasn't Panasonic to have a conference today?
1/1/2015
guest Latest news flash probably confirms the Panasonic news conference is an audio thing:
http://www.naias.com/the-2014-show/01-10-2014-(1).aspx
1/1/2015
guest Late 5:30pm I believe. It was posted elsewhere that it may be more about music systems at their conference. That would not surprise or scare me. IF there is to be a giga factory announcement I think TM would do it.
1/1/2015
guest So how much is Ford paying CNBC/BB for the ridiculous amount of 100% positive coverage??? I would rather watch a commercial. I actually choked on my food a little bit when one of the commentators suggested that the F-150 was the first mass-production all-aluminum vehicle
1/1/2015
guest Well, those $155 Jan17s I bought last week look ugly... on the other hand, TSLA is down about $10 over the past week on basically no news (other than the adapter replacement, which is not a big deal at all IMO). I bought a couple more $155 Jan17s around $0.25 today, but that's basically just me gambling at this point. Still, the negative price tend going into the NAIAS suggest expectations are pretty low.. here's hoping for a nice bump after some big news.
Also bought some $155 Jan24s now that TSLA is down 3%, seemed like a decent price for them.
1/1/2015
guest Ugly day. The only thing that makes me feel better is the fact that it's not just TSLA it's the whole market. TSLA being dragged down like everybody else.
1/1/2015
guest Me too at .26, I hope the market likes tomorrow.
I have a 10:00am meeting tomorrow. I hope it's only an hour long.
1/1/2015
guest Yea, not feeling terribly hopeful at this point. It's the first time I've dabbled in very short term options since the Q3 debacle...this isn't going any better.
Edit: crap, in fact, I think I'm going to get a margin call. I'd cleared a bunch of margin headroom dumping a 2015 put I'd sold, but with the steep drop in the last 10 days I think it chewed up that head room.
1/1/2015
guest Musk Speaking in Detroit Auto Show tomorrow (previous poster was looking at an interview done in December that was saying Musk working on schedule). Some interesting speculation that a live Model X spotted on the roads in California is actually driving to Detroit. I think this $139 is a very interesting dip in advance of a potentially significant Musk intervention with the stock packed to the walls with shorts - effectively at Musk's request on Q3.
1/1/2015
guest I just made a tiny bit of money on some SCTY puts this morning (Which would have actually done very nicely had I held them until this afternoon) and that was my first foray back into post-Q3 short term options. I'm still very hesitant as I sit looking at all the juicy $14X TSLA calls on my screen thinking tomorrow will bring the long awaited catalyst in the form of a Model X rolling into the Tesla booth. I just closed the trading windows reminding myself what it feels like to be on the losing side. Very, very tempting plays today, but I just don't have the time to properly research or the stomach to get back into options all at once.
Edit: Ended up picking up a few calls anyways.
1/1/2015
guest Hope your right Julian. Anyone know what time theTesla press conference is tomorrow?
1/1/2015
guest Yes, it would be strange not to have Elon at the event... I'm expecting AWD Model S to be announced based on the ski rack, locked frunk, power-off on the dash, winter display background, etc. If a Model X won't be displayed, I'm sure we'll at least get some update on it. As far as bigger battery pack... I have no idea. I don't think anything in particular hints at a bigger battery pack announcement. With the supercharger unit also on display, I'm sure we will get some update on the SC network and maybe an update on future network plans in NA, as well as EU.

1/1/2015
guest Has anyone found a 'live' feed for NAIAS?
1/1/2015
guest Well, I couldn't resist. There is seemingly no extra premium on this week's options I had to buy more at the lower prices. I bought at a 135 strike so I figure I win if the market reacts favorably to announcements tomorrow or even if the stock just tracks back up towards 150. I have some at a 140 strike as well. Well, I must admit I have some at 170 as well but I am not expecting those to pay off.
And my other justification is that I haven't been to Vegas in 5 years...
1/1/2015
guest For what it's worth: I'm at Hawthorne now and was hoping to see the Model X prototype but it's not here. The staff member just told me, "It's at the Detroit Auto Show."
Not sure what to make of this but maybe it's being driven up there now? I expect more people would have seen it, though.
1/1/2015
guest We human beings can rationalize anything! I have done a double down on my Jan18 150s.....Elon would probably have to say AWD, Giga factory and Oh by the way..here is the model E for me to see these guys go to green. So, maybe Vegas would be a better idea. I hope your 135s make you a bundle.
1/1/2015
guest I've doubled down and even quadrupled one. I now have 140's, 150's, 155's, 160's, and 170's. Like they say, go big or go home. I hope it was the right move, I sold 2 of my csiq leaps to get the 140's and more 155's. That dip to the 137's was irresistible. Oh yea I picked up some June 160's too.
1/1/2015
guest Likewise. I've been loading up for a while now, which has proven to be a bad idea with options because the time decay + overall downward movement has just killed the value. If we get a solid move back over 150 and maybe to 160 I'll be good though. These past few trading sessions just show why its always good to have more cash at hand to buy more because it can always go lower.
1/1/2015
guest Wow, you'd think there's an earnings report tomorrow with some of the posts... hehe.
I'm glad I'm not alone in my addiction, even if I'm playing with a smaller chip stack.
1/1/2015
guest Out of curiosity, has anyone dabbled in TSLA futures? The at close futures price was $145 for March. If I figure this right the entry price is nothing and you get essentially 100x magnification on the underlying (or as if you had a delta 1 ITM call) that settles every single day. So yes today you'd have lost $638 / future, but if tomorrow it tracks up $15 to $154 for example, then you gain $1500 per contract. Any experts on why this is really good/bad? The magnification effect is even stronger than options, but gives you daily settlement so I can see how this could be crap as you really need to have the money for any consecutive downwards days. Basically you have a 1-day expiry position that keeps rolling up at delta 1.
1/1/2015
guest Wish I had some free cash to throw down today on the drop. Good Luck to everyone that was able to get in. I think tomorrow is going to be a good day.
1/1/2015
guest Oh so we are back to buying on the dip? Great. Only thing is that I already got in on Thursday. Anyways let's hope for the best!
1/1/2015
guest Well, I can kiss my options goodbye I suppose when that news breaks.
1/1/2015
guest
YES.
Ok that is exactly what we are looking for. Possibly, actually quite likely proof of a production version of the Model X.
1/1/2015
guest Seems like the opposite. If Hawthorne says the prototype is in Detroit then Tesla would only be showing the old prototype.

This is an excerpt from the latest adapter retrofit document. Im seeing the number 29222!
In 2012 total delivery was 2650. So can it be that there were 29222-2650=26572 units of Model S delivered in 2013?????

Glad to hear it. I think the FUD is stemming from this letter dated today, from Jennifer Timian of the NHTSA to James Chen:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM448672/RCAK-14V006-6094.pdf
It seems to be merely an acknowledgement of the over-the-air update and new adapters. There's nothing new there, but this threw me for a loop:
Potential Number of Units Affected: 29,222
1/1/2015
guest You quoted a silly tweet from Benzinga. Well, in my tribal lingo that name has multiple connotations like benzin, gas and zinger. I also notice the post you quote is no more. But I will be pleased if the sale of tsla continues into Tuesday, when payment is due for some shares sold earlier, so that my tsla hoard can grow a little more. Confidently awaiting the day to sell off parts of it for a humonguous profit. Darn those slow banks! (But it's a good thing the money didn't come in earlier or I would have paid more than needed today.) Horizon is looong. And looking brighter from my standpoint.

Edit: I just noticed the quote comes from the next thread, short-term-non-social-chat* ;-) So it's not actually disappeared, just emagicated.

1/1/2015
guest Elon already said it would be considered a recall. This is old news for us.
- - - Updated - - -
No don't get excited, people buy multiple adapters.
1/1/2015
guest It is not FUD. Look at the NHTSA website. It is a formal recall, but IMO, this is a non-issue and has no material impact on either the short term or long term prospects of the company. Traders may react negatively towards this in the short term, but common sense will prevail. A NHTSA mandated recall on f*** from underbody piercing is still an issue and still holding back the stock (along with the heavy short interest).
1/1/2015
guest This is only for the NEMA 14-50 and not the other adapters. How many people buy extra NEMA 14-50's? I can't imagine its that many people. The question is, how many Model S's are "in flight" right now at the factory and on the way to delivery?
1/1/2015
guest Sorry to post again so soon; I need to type faster.
That looks to me like a ridiculous exaggeration.
1: It may be the global output so far, but not all is US.
2: US electrics is, ahem, a little bit convoluted. NEMA is an American standard. We know there are about 2,000 TMS delivered in Norway alone, which has its own peculiar power circuitry, and many more in the rest of Europe, already. None of these can be affected by a faulty NEMA adapter, in any way. They just don't fit.
3: But it would be really great if the total number of sold cars is already over 29,000! Yay! Is this a sneak peek into YER already?
1/1/2015
guest Doesn't a "recall" imply you have to hand over the old part to Tesla? I don't wanna. It works fine. I'll use the new one they give me for my NEMA 14-50 plug at home, but I'd like to keep the old one in my car as a backup.
1/1/2015
guest Mario, your post got buried by the adapter upgrade "news"... anyway, I do not trade single stock futures either (don't know many who do), but your post makes it sound like you are getting 100x leverage on SSFs, which is strange to me. If you are referring to the 100x multiplier per SSF contract, note that this is the same multiplier that most options contracts have.
As I see it, the risk/benefit of buying/selling a naked SSF is the same as buying/selling the underlying security, and the margin requirement is the same as buying the underlying. Moreover, there is less liquidity in SSFs than in the underlying. It's true that SSFs are marked-to-market daily, unlike the underlying, but I guess I don't really see the benefit of this.
1/1/2015
guest agreed, SSF are a failed product. The only possible good that they have is for some types of arbitrage interest place b selling the SSF and buying the stock at the same time where you lock in a small amount of money profit which is more than the interest that the cash would have earned in that same time fame.
1/1/2015
guest I was using the same justification.... Except, I found that the food and entertainment was much better in Vegas.
Where are my comps? I'm getting margin warnings instead of more chips. I'm ready for a drink.
1/1/2015
guest As I understand your entry fee is 0 and if the stock goes up you gain 100x the move up (i.e. equivalent to a call option with delta 1) and if the stock goes down you lose 100x the amount and it's settled daily. So that would give you a 100x multiplier on underlying moves which gives you a nice access to the underlying without actually buying the underlying. So if we assume TSLA is going to skyrocket today, then buying the January futures contract would give you pure profit at a far far better ratio to initial investment (i.e. none). The only question is what kind of margin requirement there would be. Of course if TSLA tanks then you get a nice amount of loss too

1/1/2015
guest 1 contractor the single stock future in TSLA represent 100 shares. The margin to buy 1 contract is similar or the same as the portfolio margin needed to buy 100 shares of TSLA.
also I'm pretty sure you will pay a commission for every contract you buy.
now if you're talking about CFDs or SWAPs then that's a little different, but don't kid yourself. Providing these different products to give you exposure to TSLA is a zero sum game at best and even if you think you're trading "for free" there is a cost built into the product somewhere that is probably more than just buying the stock (ie. widening of the bid/offer spread for example)
1/1/2015
guest I just added substanstially to my long position at 137.50. Let's hope we are getting close to the bottom.
1/1/2015
guest Yes, the margin requirement for 1 SSF contract is the same as for 100 shares of the underlying.
1/1/2015
guest Wow, sure glad I picked up those Short-term calls yesterday.

1/1/2015
guest Picked up some of those as well. This morning my 150s and 155s were all deep red. When Jerome said 6,900 the stock hit 149 and I sold all of them in the green! Unbelievable. Keeping the 140s

My first order for selling the 140's didn't execute, I should have sold them at market, that cost me a little. I still have half my 155's, all my 160's and 170's. I'm down $200 right now because I bought the 160's in mid December.

1/1/2015
guest That's why I didn't sell all my 155's. The higher ones were so far underwater that I just kept them for just in case. I got my money back for all the stuff I purchased in dec even, short the $200, which looks like I will get back and then some if things climb back up a bit.
1/1/2015
guest I doubled down like 5 times on my $155s, with my last batch coming in just before press conference at $0.13. 20 minutes later I was selling them for a 10-bagger.
This time my short term play worked, even though I had to dollar cost average from $2.40 all the way down to $0.13, for a DCA of $0.7. Sold most around $1, but still holding some.
1/1/2015

guest Yea, ditto. What could have been...but I sold some on the way up the initial spike and some just a bit on the way down. Less than I could have made, but given it was looking like I'd lose it all with the 155's yesterday, I'm pretty damn content.

My overall plan was to take half what I made and buy leaps with it and keep the rest for June options and put some back into solar. Solar is killing it today too so I'll hold off on that for a day or two to see what happens.
160's are gone now too at a 65% loss, I had written them off so I'm happy with that.

guest The funny thing is no one saw this coming. We were talking about new product announcements, not delivery numbers.
1/1/2015
guest Congratulations to all the longs. This rescued some Jan 18 calls for me.

guest Why is everyone selling now?! Haha. This is what I've been waiting for and am being a bit greedy and not selling. I think this is a run that is just starting. Instead of selling my 155 weeklies I'm selling 160's to create a risk free (actually net profit) spread. I really think we can get to 160 if we break the 154ish resistance. Let the news spread, analyst upgrades, Elon clarifying FUD, etc.
Just my opinionsIt's never wrong to take profits of course and everyone has different risk tolerance. Congrats to the longs!

guest I had an order on the screen when I got distracted on some work matters...still, I've been adding calls to my portfolio steadily since 12/31, so I'm doing pretty well today. Nice turnaround.
1/1/2015
guest Yea, starting to regret selling off my 150's and 155's in when it hit 148ish. Well, regret not keeping a few, but the 155's were so far in the hole starting the day I was happy to get to even on those, particularly when we hit a steep drop off the initial spike. Better off than I started with those options, which in and of itself is a small victory given my history with options.
I'll wait for things to settle and then evaluate. I'm gunshy on statements of a squeeze or a long term run. We had all the same verbiage here just before the Q3 reports too...

guest I don't think I had fully processed the significance of what Jerome said when I pulled the trigger. I only sold enough so that my play breaks even. I'll wait for the next few days to play out before selling any more. Obviously my core position is untouched.
1/1/2015
guest I sold because they were short term, a lot of risk for otm options that are expiring in 3.5 days. I regret selling a little, but at least now I am not nervous and risk free now too.

guest I'm really happy for folks like sleepy that bought more 155's this am. The ones I bought yesterday that I still have left are 12 baggers.
1/1/2015
guest I actually think a possible better play than weeklies were March and June calls. Mainly b/c IV was so low as well as prices. We knew we needed news for a rally to START. Buying Mar and June calls still gives you a great return but with much less stress. It also gives you more time to enjoy the rally and let it run it's course once it gets started. It's also easier to hold on longer and enjoy the better returns. Just a thought.

guest First upgrade (Baird) is in! Broke $155.
1/1/2015
guest I agree and less risk. My Junes are doing awesome and you don't have to sweat it.
1/1/2015
guest The ones I bought this morning are 30 baggers by now.
I cashed out all my $155 weeklies at a nice profit (probably up 100% overall, even though I was down about 80% this morning, i.e. 10-bagger increase in value for me from today's low), but it could have been ugly if Jerome didn't give the magic 6900 number

guest Bought Jan18 140s this AM at $1.75. Had to sell half at $10. Holding the other 25. Congrats to all longs and all the weekly people who had the kahunas to hang in. My 150s and 155s were all deep (80%+) in the red this AM. A very green day today:biggrin:

guest It is today one year ago since I got my first TSLA stock. I had good feelings regarding today and put alot of my winnings in short term calls. I lost alot recent days, but today I went allin. And what a day. Up over 300% and made one year salary at my regular job. Ty Elon!
1/1/2015
guest shadows, your $170s might start seeing some action if we can spike through $155 today
Of course I'm regretting not buying up some more $155s this morning @ 0.13-0.14, but i'm happy with the ones i bought at 0.25 yesterday.. overall my cost avg was $0.405
EDIT: congrats Norse

guest Some of you guys are to good at this... haha! well done.
1/1/2015
guest Damn, really missed an opportunity selling out when that first big dip happened after the spike. I really didn't expect such a protracted response to the 6900 number.
1/1/2015
guest There is some major volume going on today.
1/1/2015
guest Well, decided that if I think it is going much higher this week there isn't much point holding on to my 140s. Sold those and used 1/3 the proceeds to buy a bunch of 165s. Locked in profits so far and will be in a much better position if this turns into a full-on squeeze.
1/1/2015
guest Jaw dropping, we might even top $160 by close!
1/1/2015
guest I took some of my cash a few hours ago and bought some 165's. They are up 25% now.
Elon's interview at 3:30 should be interesting. I think he has it out for the shorts again and wants to bring in a full blown squeeze.
1/1/2015
guest From now on the term "Tesla Tuesday" is something that pertains to the shorts
1/1/2015
guest That's where I've been making money. Of course, the longer time-frame made them more expensive, so there was less leverage than in the weeklies.
1/1/2015
guest True, but it's easier to hold on and make a larger return. For example, on weeklies once you hit 50% return I'd most likely sell b/c it can lose that value as fast. But June OTM calls it's easier to hold onto closer to expiration and make a possible 100 or 200% return.

I know some of you have some of these. Well done.
1/1/2015
guest I think Elon slipped and said Model E. Also talking about giga factory being done as a partnership. Making the final selection as to which state it will be in in the next month or so.
