Tesla moments part 17

Had my 60D for less than 24 hours so far, yet have had several Tesla moments.

At the tinting place yesterday afternoon, everyone who found out I was "the tesla guy" was asking about it.

This morning, grabbed coffee at wawa on the way into work (who the hell wakes up at 3am and figures, eh, fsck it, I'll go into work) and as I was walking out one of the employees was walking through the parking lot to check on a sprinkler at the entrance. I was behind her approaching my car, she turned around and said "That is a gorgeous car!". Big 'ole grin on my face as I said "thanks!".

Today I'll be road tripping with the dog (stupid shedding!!!) from Philly to VA and hope to have some Tesla moments at superchargers along the way.

My aunt was in town last weekend, and she was pretty excited about my car (first thing she did when she saw me was pose next to my car and have me take a picture of her with it). After dinner, we needed to pick up some medicine for my grandpa, so we decided to make her test ride a trip to the Wal-Mart Pharmacy. I made her ill a few times with the acceleration (she doesn't do well with roller coasters...fortunately, she didn't puke).

When we got out of the car in the Wal-Mart parking lot, one of the stereotypical "People of Wal-Mart" was getting into her car in a handicapped spot. She looks at me, then at the car, then back at me, and asks "what is that car?"

    Me: "A Tesla."
    Her: "A FERRARI?!?"
    Me: "No. A Tesla"
    Her: "What's that?"
Me: "A new car company based in California. It's all electric!"
    Her: "Wow...it sure is beautiful!"
    Me: "THANKS!" *Tesla grin*

When we got inside the store, my aunt looks at me and asks "Does that happen often?" I said "only about 75% of the times I get out of the car in public..."

Somewhere in Gettysburg, PA, at a local farmstand, run by this family. The kid wearing glasses was all over me like a cheap suit -- knew everything about Tesla. The other kids were infected by him. :) Rides were given. Screams and helpless giggles ensued. :) The little kid with the t-shirt and croc-ish shoes turned out to be a heckuva driver.

On my Key West to Charotte road trip this past weekend, I got many honks, waves, and thumbs up from other drivers. The best was a family in a nice SUV with a beaming smile while I'm sitting in the trunk eating an apple at the rest area. The guy walks up and tells me how much he loves and admires the S. He works in a town not far from my home and his office shares a parking lot. He states at black S all day. They even have a few Xes in his town (Salisbury, NC). His wife tried out a Leaf for a weekend and they just couldn't make it to work on it one-way, much less round trip. They are anxiously awaiting a Model ?.

Meanwhile, my cousin, having never seen any electric car before (visiting the U.S.), was blown away and enamored by my S. She keeps telling me how amazing it the car is, how effortless it is, and she the planned stops to charge have not been any issue at all.

Alright boys and girls, time for my first "Extended Tesla Moment" (trademarking that, get your mitts off it!)

Wife and I took delivery August 11th, pulled out of the Service Center at about 10:40am that morning and left behind a very different life.

Most of that first day was lost due to the extended time it took doing full tint on the car, ah well, still a few fun local drives. Friday I got into work horribly early so I could leave by noon, having already put in a full day. I got home around 12:30pm and the wife immediately went to work Pip proofing the car (our dog is Pip, she likes to shed). We put down towels and blankets in the back, wife had to work that weekend so it was just me and the dog on the inaugural long distance trip.

As it was my very first time I played it safe and hit three superchargers. The first being Newark, DE for a short top-off.
    image-20160812_125942.jpg
Was there with just one other Model S, occupants not around.
    IMG_20160812_130433.jpg

Welp, that was easy, grabbed a coffee at the starbucks across the way and took off.

Ah yes....absolute *sugar* 95 South traffic. If you want to know hell on earth, drive 95 without being in a Tesla. Here's a shot of autopilot engaged, was doing a little reading of the manual (what??? manual?)

    image-20160812_133916.jpg

Quick stop in Woodbridge, VA. This was a pain in the ass to get to, just because of garbage DC area traffic. Decent location at a little mall, nobody else was there while I was.

    IMG_20160812_154718.jpg

And then last SC of the trip, the supercharger in Glen Allen, VA. Good location, made a note of this one for the trip back as a lunch spot (<3 Panera Bread, don't care if it's a chain).
    IMG_20160812_185209.jpg

Spent lots of time with family, took a glamour shot at my Sister's house in Williamsburg, VA. This is the camera of the Nexus 6P Android phone, no filters or edits.
    IMG_20160813_154514.jpg

Bah...Sunday already? Fortunately I had met up with a great member of TMC, "Linkster" and he showed me around the area and we had a lot of Tesla talk, great guy, will be going to the drive electric even in Virginia Beach, VA with him and his lovely wife on August 27th. So as I'm preparing the dog to leave I wrapped up the cord that "Linkster" had let me borrow to hook into my parents dryer outlet.
    IMG_20160814_095912.jpg

On the first leg of the trip (was on my way to visit a friend in Glen Allen before hitting the supercharger there. Lots of traffic on 64west out of Williamsburg (of course, F that road!). "Pip" our Bullmation was enjoying her travelling suite I had set up. I also faked this second picture here (wasn't really browsing the forums on the road) and sent it to my wife, who promptly yelled at me and threatened me, she was worried about dogs safety.
    image-20160814_104104.jpg IMG_20160814_105520.jpg

Stopped at the Supercharger in Glen Allen, VA again on Sunday afternoon. Was low on people fuel and went into Panera Bread to get lunch, used the app to turn on climate control to keep the Pup nice and comfy. There were a few cars when I arrived and a white MS from Jersey was pulling in as I was walking to Panera, he had left when I took this below shot on the way back (also he was the only one who checked into PlugShare). You should all be using plugshare!
    IMG_20160814_140902.jpg

Talked with the couple with the MS in the middle of the above shot as I was walking the dog around to let her use the potty. I believe his name was John, he and his wife were on a trip from Florida to Connecticut, we talked Tesla for a bit and he asked me how I was liking the car. Ok, the chat was over because it was ridiculously hot outside and we parted ways.

Time for the final leg. This trip was where I had my first really fun mobile "Tesla Moment". A white Acura I think it was was slowly passing in the left lane, there was a guy driving and woman sitting with him in the passenger side. She was very clearly staring at the car, I don't know if she saw me at first (window tint and all). I started waving to her with both hands (go autopilot) then she shifted her gaze and started grinning and waving back at me. It was the best feeling.

Obviously I've posted way too much, my last shot will be in a reply to this. Hope you Tesla faithful enjoyed the read and you folks waiting for your delivery have now killed a little bit more time :)

    Hi, @Xenius,

    Way to go!

Quick question: why check-in on plugshare when at a SuperCharger? (I ask sincerely.)

    Thanks,
    Alan
  • Aug 16, 2016
    Xenius
Hey @Pollux (in my eyes) if you check in at a supercharger with plugshare you can say how long you plan to be there, this will help others plan their stops accordingly. Plus if you check in and someone messages you that all spots are full and your car is done it could be very useful.

Not sure if you've used plugshare, but you can also tell others the Voltage and Max Amps with your checkin, just more useful information. Information is king!
  • Aug 16, 2016
    Pollux
Well... I'm a little embarrassed to say so... I've only used plugshare as a consumer of its information, and only to find backup charging when I don't have enough Superchargers handy. Three years ago, when I first got my P85+, I was a regular user of evtripplanner.com, plugshare, and RVparking.com (but to be fair, I don't remember exactly when I stated using those tools and whether they were all fully available in August of 2013). There weren't nearly as many SCs then, and I did a lot of advance trip planning. Flash forward to today, and I mostly just buzz around using the car's knowledge of the SCs and the car's Nav system to plan the trip. I still make occasional use of evtripplaner and RVparking -- as recently as last weekend, although that was the first time in months.

It never occurred to me that I could use plugshare as a way to let other people know how to find me if I overstay my welcome at an SC. I'll look at it again.

    Thanks for these ideas!

One thing -- the 3 Tesla's together at the SpC, if you arrived 2nd, you're not getting the full juice out of it. The stalls are paired (1A to 1B, 2A to 2B, etc.), and each pair shares the power. The first person to get there, gets all the power they need, the 2nd person gets sloppy seconds.

In the long run, it's not a huge time difference, but if there's an option to not share a charger, then you should take it.

Yup, totally aware, the car in the middle arrived third. I forgot to tell them about the pairing, the husband was happy to talk and the wife wanted to get going.

I've only been to two superchargers thus far, but both of those were paired with the As to one side and the Bs to the other. So the order was:
    1A 2A 3A 4A 1B 2B 3B 4B

Great story. I hope to get more than a day trip in one of these days, but I'm slammed with work.

It varies per site, and it's always good to take a look before parking. It could be that way, or it could be 1A 1B 2A 2B, etc.

I don't know the reason they're labeled differently.

My wife and I were featured in the local paper about buying a Tesla. A few weeks later she was approached by a complete stranger that said, " I read the article about you in the paper, can I borrow $5000.00?"
Other than that, we get great comments and response at least weekly. We've been doing cruise nights with the local car clubs and the questions just never stop so my wife made a loose leaf binder for me simply titled Tesla FAQ'S that we put out while the car is parked at them.

@Old Wyseguy, you are doing wonderful things when you engage all these people. It is truly eye-opening for the average person when s/he encounters an all-electric vehicle that is a desirable automobile to possess and not a "weird mobile" that is styled so differently from the mainstream and/or has significant unexpected limitations.

If at all possible, but only if you are comfortable doing so, I'd encourage taking people out for a quick ride with you behind the wheel. Demonstrate the acceleration -- people are almost always SHOCKED at the car's acceleration and usually smile, giggle or outright guffaw. I find that the acceleration has a very positive side-effect: lingering stereotypes fly out of the passengers' heads, forever. No more thinking of an EV as a compromised car or as a glorified golf cart.

Pointing out that next fall's Model 3 will start at $35K, and that the average new car price is, well, just about $35K (it was $33K two years ago, dunno for sure what it is today), and that the car qualifies for $7500 fed tax credit... and, heck, dunno about Alabama, but Louisiana is good for ANOTHER $8K on top of that... well, sir!! :)

I also think that what you'e doing builds a coalition of people who are willing to at least *tolerate* EVs on the road, so that when the inevitable issue surfaces of Tesla selling in that state or a nearby state, these people will be supportive.

    I salute you!

    Alan

P.S. Although the stranger asking for $5K is certainly weird and uncomfortable. :-(

My wife and I were on a road trip with our MS and we noticed a beautiful newer Vette pacing us. He passed and the couple both gave us the thumbs up, We felt the same about the Vette and returned the same. Shortly after, we pulled into a rest area and, of all things parked right next to them. So now it's Tesla time. We chatted, laughed and compared notes on both cars. We were both willing to actually swap cars to the next rest area, but our paths were not the same so we parted ways.

When we picked up our draft it was specified we must bring the car by so they could see it. So the very next day after picking up our MS in Orlando, we brought it by. It took an hour and a half to give every employee in there a quick demonstration ride!

That was a 2 year old post ;)

But I do get asked that occasionally too. And I respond with the same way he does "it starts around 60k". Most people just want to know so that they can size you up. If the person ACTUALLY cares, I get into the tax credit, the gas savings, the maintenance, etc. and that with an ICE it's a low buy-in price, but a high up-keep price and with an EV you pay more upfront, but less for usage.

I had someone from my kids preschool walk by and say "o, that's a Tesla, isn't that an expensive car?" I didn't know how to respond to that, because I'm used to "how much was it", so I said "somewhat". Again, they were just sizing up the cost of the car and not actually interested, so I'm not going to get into details.

yesterday tesla moment - I passed 2 slow moving cars blocking the right and left lane via the right turning lane (YES, I know this is illegal and dangerous, but the speed limit was 50 and they were side by side going 35 mph. I don't have the patience for that kind of behavior). I hit the GO pedal and whipped around without issue. a few minutes later a silver honda pulled up next to me waving his hands and yelling at me to roll my window down. I assumed he was going to yell at me for passing. Instead, he had a huge smile on his face and thumbs up and says, "Man, that car is fast and great move down there. I love that car!!!". I grinned back!

today tesla moment - driving to work down 295 towards southern maryland. Stopped at light. Guy next to me in a huge full-size van makes the roll window down motion. He then, with amazing enthusiasm, asks if he can see me floor it when the light turns green. I obliged. Couldn't see his face in the rear view, but I know I made his day!

So, picked up my S this morning and I can now join the Tesla moments thread:) Going to my sisters house to show off my new car I noticed an older woman behind me in the passenger seat of a Pathfinder in my rear view mirror. SHE WAS LEANING FORWARD OVER THE DASH to see what kind of car was in front of her. I could read her lips and her shocked expression when she yells to her son " oh my god its a Tesla! They proceeded to follow me for the next half mile to my sisters and stopped. We talked for about a half hour andthey had all kinds of questions. Very nice lady and she threw some cange in the car for good luck :) :)

I took my boss to a construction site in my Tesla for a meeting that both of us attended. When we returned to the car, there were about 1/2 dozen construction workers hanging out around my car. They saw my boss and started peppering him with questions. To my surprise he was pretty accurate in answering the questions! One finally remarked to him what an awesome car it was. To which he remarked: "Thanks, it's hers" motioning in my direction. :) I smiled, got in the driver's seat, and quietly took off.

    1. Parked at a Hotel in Tobermory Ontario yesterday and charged on 110V. While siting on our balcony overlooking the Lake and our Tesla underneath us, we watched 30+ people stop to comment on the car. It was interesting and sometimes funny to overhear the conversations. One guy said "look how hot that Tesla looks" and his wife said "keep dreaming", and she walked more quickly to make sure he followed.

    2. Supercharged at Barrie Ontario today, wife and son went into nearby store and I came to pick them up when the car was charged up.

A man runs up and starts saying how he saw a Tesla beat a Mustang at the drag strip over the weekend. We exchange some details on our Tesla, range, performance, practicality (frunk always amazes). He points over at his yellow Mustang, and sheepishly says he works at Ford, so buying a Tesla is unfortunately not going to happen. His son was watching and smiling the entire time, and gave us a big thumbs up when we silently drove away.

When I first got my Model S nearly 2 1/2 years ago, I was one of only about 35 owners on Maui, so I had many "moments" with people who had never seen a Tesla before. Now, not so much. However, I did have one today. I have a friend with a food truck here on Maui (Bubba's Gourmet Dog Shack - good food and great people, located on the way to Big Beach), and I stopped by today for lunch. While there, a couple from northern British Columbia stopped at the food truck for some shave ice and ice cream. The husband, Al, noticed my shiny metallic blue Model S, asked if it was mine, and then told me how it was such a beautiful car! He started asking me various questions, but he did know a few things about it already. I showed him and his wife the frunk, of course, and the trunk too, as they didn't realize how much space was available. We talked for over 20 minutes, mostly about the car and what it could do and how it performed. I have to admit, I never get tired of that aspect of being a Tesla owner!

Took delivery of a Model S 60 today, and 40 mins later had my first "Tesla Moment" - When I pulled into the driveway, the 10-year-old next door was mowing his lawn. While I'm pulling into my garage (and freaking out about swinging the turn safely in the new car), he hops off the mower and comes FLYING into the yard with the OMGISTHATATESLAISITYOURSCANIGOFORARIDE. We'll go for a ride soon...I need more practice getting into the garage!

@msnow, Honolulu has the only service center in the state, and my car has never been there. I was smart (although not as smart as I should have been), and bought the 4 year service plan with unlimited ranger visits. We have an awesome, dedicated ranger on Maui, and he has done the majority of the service I have needed. When I first got the car, they would send a couple of different guys from Oahu out to Maui. In fact, they added the battery shield to my car in my condo parking spot (My car was built 2 weeks before that was included)! When 4 years are up, I guess I'll see what happens.

Day 1 with the new car and tesla moment!

I have the car charging at the charge point at the hotel we are staying at; I'm playing with the app standing a few feet from the car when the security guy comes over and says " are you blocked in?" Said "nope, just playing with my car". He walks over and was amazed how I could do stuff with the car in the app. He then notices the cable plugged into the charge port and says " what is this?" Long story short he was a young guy but had never heard of Tesla and knew very little about electric vehicles. The word "sick" came out of his mouth a couple dozen times as I showed him frunk, 17" screen and summon as well as many other things.

He says "does it have much power?" Told him to google "insane or ludicrous launch"

I had to wash my car last night after dinner (Florida torrential downpour+ road construction+ no drainage+ 2 aholes in pickup trucks=car covered in something terrible). My new ish next door neighbor was outside as I was finishing up. I asked him when he was going for a ride in it, he shrugged. So I said, let's go dry her off! Suddenly he became very animated, and asked if his wife had ever been in it. I said no, GO GET HER!

They are a young couple into NASCAR, so much so they bought a nice RV trailer they travel to races in. I'm not so sure those races will look quite as exciting to them now!

So, here's the deal: I was about to turn the corner near a local pizza joint and enjoying the cooler evening weather, had my windows open and sunroof open. In the parking lot of aforementioned pizza joint, were a handful of young adults with their cars. As I cornered, I heard the word "Tesla" but paid no mind to it or them. I merged with traffic and found myself at the next light. Here comes one of those cars - a 5.0 Mustang. I was minding my own business, but did notice several young men were in the car and one said to the others, "Man, it's a f***n' old lady!"

Huh? Me? Are they really referring to me? While I'm not sensitive about my nearly 67 years, no one's going to call me old, especially in that tone. I watched the cross traffic stoplight, scanned the area and waited for the light to change. In the forty mile an hour speed zone, it didn't take but two seconds to reach speed and I immediately slowed.

I looked in my rearview mirror and realized the hooligans in the 5.0 Mustang had stalled. LOL. When he finally caught up with me at the next light and yelled to me, "Hey, what the hell's in that thing?"

My response? "A 'f***in' old lady."

But now she makes fun of them, and when I recently discussed replacing my Tesla (not hers! There is no way that is happening) with another EV, she objected and said "I think we are Tesla people now." So we have another Tesla on the way...

Do Tesla moments before getting the car count? Getting mine in 2 weeks (fingers crossed), and I have a waiting list of 16 people at work waiting to go for a ride after they heard I was getting one - I told two people and it spread like wildfire. Now my boss, his boss, and his boss are all on the list and may be buying one after our first drive together :) I spend a lot of time each day answering questions about it, usually with knowledge I got from obsessively reading this forum!

Also that first time someone I know in the parking garage at the work sees me and asks what it is or any other work moments as I am not advertising it.

Which is precisely why I commute to work in a Smart ED. It makes for easy conversations regarding electric cars, but does not stay into price/affordability (except to say it's the cheapest way to commute outside of bicycle/bus).

I've only told a small set of people at work, as they all know about Tesla (cause I can't shut up about it), and two have already put down reservations, and another leased an EV while waiting for the 3.

As our primary car, which we often use for road trips, nothing is a serious alternative. My wife is keeping her S85.

However, the secondary car that I drive doesn't need to do nearly as much. While nothing is as much fun as a Tesla, until not so long ago any EV would have suited my needs, and been considerably cheaper to own. Before the S was available, we had a ~90-mile RAV4 for about 4 years - it was a great car for us for everything but road trips. Plus I'd prefer a much smaller car than the S, so I am happy to look at other EVs. (Practically speaking I should consider PHEVs too; but after not buying gas since 2009, I can't see myself going back).

However, for various reasons (a weekly 100-mile trip, my wife not wanting to swap cars weekly with me if I have a short-range EV, me wanting to support Tesla, etc) we ended up deciding that another Tesla makes more sense. Well, no - it doesn't necessarily make more sense. But it's what we're going to do.

I suppose this part qualifies as a Tesla Moment: a stripped S60 would perfectly suit my needs for the second car, and is the obvious frugal choice (well, as frugal as buying any Tesla gets). I started looking at inventory cars for an S60 stripper; and I really think I could have been content if I had found one. However, most inventory cars are pretty loaded and not that cheap. Plus, if I get a stripped 90D, then it could be our new road trip vehicle, and when our Model 3 arrives we could replace my wife's car instead of mine. And it would have AWD (a concern for those of us in the Cascade foothills; my wife got stuck in her S85 once trying to get up the hill even with winter tires) and be considerably quicker (a concern for those of us that have to sell a Roadster). So I looked for stripped 90Ds...but discovered a pre-facelift loaded P90DL that was cheaper to lease than any inventory 90D. In fact it was cheaper than some of the loaded 60's.

So, I started looking for a stripped S60 but ended up with a loaded P90DL. Tesla has a way of doing that to you.

    So true!

I'm at month 36 on my 2013 P85+, purchased with the buyback-guarantee loan. By November 30, I want to have this car sold (either back to Tesla or privately, I've kept it pretty clean!) and be into the latest car. Every time I think about configuring a 75 or a 60, the logic chain that takes over goes like this:

best range for the money is an S90

gotta have AWD, even now that I live in MD rather than MA, because I have children and a wife and it would be wrong to take the greater risk of losing traction or control with RWD. Also for this reason I will need a new set of Nokiian Hakkapolittas.

gotta have P, because otherwise highway merges and other traffic situations become riskier without the ability to choose exactly where to be able to put my car and when

gotta have Ludicrous (or whatever is current) because I'm 52

all the other options are "in the noise" financially, so best to get them so car is more desirable for future resale

except I'll pass on the rear-facing jump seats, since my kids are past the point that they'll fit, thus eliminating unnecessary weight, improving energy efficiency, driving greenhouse gas emissions down still further, AND being frugal (bonus points will accrue when I explain all this to the wife*)

So Max Performance + Max Options - Wildly Expensive, GHG-Emitting Jump Seats == Highly Logical Configuration

The big problem is waiting around for whatever the heck Elon is going to drop on us this fall... September? October? Who the heck knows with this company...! :) :)

I'm kinda having a Tesla moment right now. The internet at the house died Sat evening and we have to either go to my SO's office to use the wifi there or use our cell phones which only get one bar up here in the hills. It dawned on me about an hour ago that I do have a device with cellular internet with a larger screen than the phone: the car! So I'm reading the forum in my Tesla out of necesity. At the moment the car is the world's most expensive iPad!

Though the screen flashes a lot when loading screens and typing is a pain. I wish they still allowed you to plug in a keyboard into the car.

I recall when buying the car how my wife emphasized that it was "whatever I want". When picking the color, I picked red... because I remembered a conversation a long time before that about how she would have enjoyed a red sports car. Not even five minutes later, she says she can't take it any more and changes the color to that dark green. :) I was a bit concerned, as I tend to prefer blues and blacks, but I have come to appreciate that dark green. I heard it turned out to be about 3% of the color mix, which is why it was axed, so clearly it's not a popular choice. But I think it looks great... and appreciate your vote of support!

    Thanks,
    Alan

P.S. I'm far more relaxed about choosing a color for the new DL or whatever it is I get, as I am certain I will not actually be burdened with a meaningful choice. :)

Yes, it hasn't worked for a long time now, but once upon a time you could plug in a keyboard and type with it. You can still plug in a mouse and use it as a substitute for manipulating the touchscreen directly. It's not a great experience (the cursor is kind of hard to spot, and of course the whole UI is built around touch interactions) but it works, and can be a nice way to let back seat passengers fiddle with stuff.

Latest Tesla moment was on the drive home from work today. On the freeway a guy in a work van pulls up on my passenger side, gives me a thumbs up and accelerates. After taking one of my co-workers for a drive the other morning I was then showing him the frunk. A lady was walking through the parking lot where I park (our building is overcrowded so I park across the street in the shade of a non-used building). She looks over as she's passing by then looks up at us and says "Where's the engine?". I responded, "there isn't one, it's fully electric". She says "Oooh!...Pretty car!" and keeps walking.

My co-worker looked and me and said, "if that wasn't the perfect setup for a Tesla commercial I don't know what is" and made a "the more you know" motion and whispered "Tesssllllaaaaa".

"Engines" are heat powered. "Motors" are electric powered. That's why your old ICE had a Check Engine light, not a Check Motor light.
  • Aug 26, 2016
    Xenius
Bingo, you Tesla has either one or for the "D" models, two electric motors. No engines.
  • Aug 26, 2016
    ItsNotAboutTheMoney
Well, really they can be the same thing:
An engine is "a machine with moving parts that converts power into motion."
A motor is "a machine, especially one powered by electricity or internal combustion, that supplies motive power for a vehicle or for some other device with moving parts."

As an example, your BMV/DMV regulates _motor_ vehicles.
There's quite a large company called General Motors that makes a lot more gasoline-powered vehicles than electric vehicles.
In the UK, a car is colloquially referred to as a "motor".

However, it's now become _common usage_ to say combustion engine and electric motor.

Followed this thread from the beginning for 3 years and finally have a couple of Tesla moments to share:

It replaced my wife's old car so she drives it mainly to work. She worked from home Wednesday so I got the keys to "Khalessi". She had to take our ICE around town for a bit and when I saw her that evening she goes:
Wife: "So how was it driving the Tesla today?"
    Me: grin
Me: "How was it driving the Charger today?"
Wife: "Painful. I can't wait to be back behind the wheel of 'Khalessi'!"

And to think she only just started becoming a Tesla enthusiast in January, I'm so proud ;)

    Moment 2:
With the car at work I had to show the girls at the office, who knew I had longed for this car for years, the new ride. Did the usual stuff, best moments were:

"let me show you the "engine" in this bad boy."
    Pop frunk.
    :eek::eek::eek::eek:
    And
"Oh here let me pull it out of the parking space so you can get in"
    Jaws drop.
One girl (drives Lexus SUV) said she can't quit thinking about how awesome my car is!

Generally engines are always powered by fuel inside device (heat engines), while motors are powered by an outside power source. I think society just use the two interchangeably despite it not technically being correct.

For example, you've probably never heard of your clothes dryer or washer referred to as having an "engine", but they have motors that are, other than power, not too dissimilar from an EV. Meanwhile just about every vehicle out in the world is more commonly referred to as carrying an engine, like locomotive engines, jet engine on a plane, etc. as they're all exploding dino-juice to run. I imagine this may vary a lot more outside the US too and probably has changed a lot over the years.

I definitively understand that feeling of slight paranoia and not looking forward to being judged. The way I'm approaching this is by telling people exactly how much it's costing me on a monthly basis, which is ~$400 after gas and oil savings (and excluding any credits, rebates). And that's lower than many others at work spend on their leases and loans. I think of I take the path of complete transparency, it'll open up some eyes and hopefully will mitigate the silly, immature jealousy and judgement... hopefully...

Today I had four hours of Tesla Moments while showing my car at Imagination Stations 15th Annual Hands on Transportation presented by Standard Electric Supply Co.. A couple dozen groups of people came by to see and talk about the car during the show, and there are several very cute photos of little kids at the wheel of a 90D no-doubt floating around Facebook as we speak. People's attitudes were mostly very positive and there was a lot of genuine interest. Even though I made up a
FAQ and put in on a poster by my car, I still got hoarse from answering questions (often those right on the FAQ...). I think the price still makes it seem like more of a fantasy than a reality in a working-class area like this, though the prospect of the Model 3 is starting
to temper that a little. A few people commented on never having seen a Tesla in person before, so that was nice for them.

People's fascination with the frunk is really kinda weird. After a little while I just left it open and that attracted signifcantly more passers
by to stop and investigate. It's always fun to play with the little kids and say "Where's the engine? Must be in the back! Let's go see."
then open the trunk, feigning shock "Oh, no! Where is it? Someone took it! How'm I gonna get home now?!"

Best Tesla Moment comment of the day: "Of all of the vehicles I've seen here today, this is the only one I'd want to drive" (what? no
hankering to drive a recycling truck or a taco trunk? c'mon, live, man! ;))

I bought a 1/8 scale Chevy V-8 model on Ebay and I keep that in the frunk. I've only shown it to a couple of people thus far and all knew Teslas don't have engines. I'm waiting to punk someone who is ignorant about Tesla. I can now safely say every car I've owned has had a GM small block V-8 in it. :)

I finally introduced a friend to Tesla today. She lives in Seattle and is an odd bird. She's very technophobic (she has trouble figuring out MacOS and iOS), but she's been fascinated with Teslas since she first heard about them. She's never had a chance to be in one until today when we ran a number of errands with the S.

My SO called a mutual friend using the bluetooth so we could all talk to her in the car, which was amazing enough (our friend's current car is an old Chrysler mini-van on its last legs). She had also never seen a navigation system before. She was amazed when I typed in an address and the system calculated a route.

I blew her mind when I turned on autopilot on the freeway and took my hands off the wheel. After the autopilot demonstration she realized I hadn't taken the key out of my pocket or did anything obvious to start the car. When we explained you start the car by pressing the brake pedal she was further blown away.

A little later we were talking about phoning in a food order to pick up on the way home from a place our friend had never been before. My SO said our friend didn't know what the menu was, so I just pulled over, called up the menu on the browser and invited her to peruse.

She loved the car, but was too intimidated by the tech to drive it.
