What is Tesla's upcoming 'under your nose' announcement? part 1

  • Apr 3, 2013
    yobigd20
In Betty Liu's interview with Elon after the announcement yesterday, Elon mentions a number of major announcements coming in the next few weeks (at least 3).

The first announcement he says will be supercharger related , and that "they've made a lot more progress than people realize".

The second announcement Elon says will be related to "reengineering of tesla's service...and just like we want to have the best car in the world we want to have the best service in the world and that they need to do a few things to get there." He does not mention if this is related to Telsa's customer service, or the service centers, or the new service plans. So I have no clue what this is really in reference to.

The third Elon says he "won't quite talk about but he thinks is pretty cool except to say that if you're driving a model S it's right under your nose."

Now that is what I'm really curious about....it's "right under your nose.". This makes me thing there is something behind the nose cone or under your nose in the dash or perhaps new features in the software thats going to be rolling out.

    Thoughts?

They are rolling out more superchargers, service?, and probably just wifi connection for under the nose.

    Probably just finally enabling WiFi.

I expect it to be the overpriced data, tethering, and WiFi.

If they announce data plans, I sure hope they give folks who bought the high tech package a full year gratis. I still feel like what we got for that $3,500 was a bit wanting...

Or maybe we will finally get access to the hard drive that we already paid for with the tech package... :p

My guess is switching the current voice control to sth like Google Now or Siri. The voice recognition accuracy as of now is not that great IMO.

A freebie, or steeply discounted, Drop-In Center Console would look pretty good right under my nose - where I could actually reach my travel mug without contorting my body to reach the cup holders in the arm rest. I would also second the nomination for gratis data plans on the Tech Package.

From a telephone interview with Forbe's Hanna Elliot (HE):
HE: When is the next announcement?

EM: The next one will be sometime next week. It could be as soon as Monday, but we havent decided on a firm date. Did I mention well be focusing on service? The Monday announcement is going to be focused on service. And in the following week or two after that were going to have a big announcement on the supercharger network, and then following that were going to have a mystery announcement or two if people arent completely sick of hearing about us. Ha ha.

Doesn't it seem to you that they've just scratched the surface of possibilities?

    Nav
    - actually save old destinations (doesn't currently)
    - allow favorites
    - home button
    - can we get maps off the harddrive? Right now it seems like its all downloading off 3G
    - integrate traffic data when planning routes
    - allow warnings when you are exceeding the speed limit (perhaps throw in a customizable cushion of 5-10 mph)

    Music
    - Access to harddrive
    - Allow for it to remember where you paused a podcast
    - Allow it to play the audio portion of video files mp4s)
    - Pull picture and artist info from mp3 on your thumb drive
    - Add Pandora

    Voice control
    - Add a lot more options

    Internet
    - flash player?
    - allow the storing of cookies
    - when you push your finger and hold it, perhaps magnify the area to make sure you are clicking on the right spot
    - multiple tab support

    General
    - How about different skins? How about an Aero theme?
    - LTE
    - WiFi for faster updates

I used my infallible logic to determine that Elon's "putting my money where my mouth is" comment meant he was going to eat a portion of his fortune. Using the same brilliant reasoning, I have determined that what is right under my nose when driving is my stomach. Elon knows that driving the model S is so much fun that many will eschew walking in favor of driving and thereby gain weight. In order to mitigate this health effect, he has made a deal with Richard Simmons to become the "voice" of the Model S! Anytime you interface with the model S, a small Richard Simmons will appear, offering encouragement and helpful hints. "I love turning right. Now let's party off the pounds! YEAH!"

My head tells me it's some kind of connectivity package.

My heart (fantasizing) wants the sub 10k AWD retrofit option on the S.

Though Elon did say in Europe that he wanted to do something for roadster owners.

No longer a requirement for annual service...
  • Apr 26, 2013

Battery warranty is all on Telsa: unless you destroy it physically in a crash or maliciously (Elon's example: blowtorch), no other behavior will void it.

Roadsters available as loaners in some markets. Loaners will be available for sale at discount of 1% per month + some amount per mile (forgot the figure). Elon expects some people to swap their car for a loaner if it's better (just pay the price differential). I think that is a really interesting option.

My questions: If you don't have to pay for the service plan (or even get inspection) as part of the warranty, what are the advantages of doing so anyway?
  • Apr 26, 2013
    Owner
    Unconditional warranty....

Would not apply if you take a blow torch to the battery pack. No intentional destruction .... but complete piece of mind.

Initial batch of loaners is about 100.

Toward the end of todays conference call Elon was reluctant to answer a question regarding all-wheel-drive for the Model S. He indicated that was a matter to be discussed in the future. I strongly suspect that AWD is what will be under a Tesla drivers nose.

Why do you say Toyota? The only Toyota w/Tesla bits right now is the Rav4 EV which is only a CA compliance car. IIRC, it's only sold at 55 dealers in CA.
  • Apr 27, 2013

    JRP3
Not a chance. Whatever it is it's already in the car, since he said if you own a Model S it's right under your nose. Unless you think all the Model S's have an invisible front drive unit already in the car.
  • Apr 27, 2013
    AlMc
I agree. No AWD 'S' for some time. Their business plan seems clear. Roadster to prove EV can be done with decent range. 'S' to show that not only can an EV have some practical range but can compete with luxury sedans. 'X' to show that you can do AWD and compete with crossover vehicles. Gen III to finally show you can make a more affordable EV. Eventually TS may return what we would all like to see...an option of an AWD 'S' but from a business plan stand point I think they have (or should have) their eye on moving the company forward to reaching out to all market segments.

The problem with this is the "will make Model S owner's happy" doesn't make any sense. I has to be dealing with existing cars. And the ability to add a new motor, and FWD to my car for $15k isn't something I would care about in the least.
  • Apr 28, 2013

I did hear from a tech that the Model S was being artificially capped, well below its limits, by software to ensure reliability. I wonder if they're going to ease those restrictions a little.
  • Apr 28, 2013
    Zzzz...
Interesting. They recently updated MSP 0-60 with 4.2 sec vs old 4.4sec. Did they improved performance through software update because they got more confident in reliability? Or they simply changed the way 0-60 calculated(rollout etc)?

Heres the exact quote from Musk near the end of a Bloomberg interview on April 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]:

Then theres a third announcement that I wont quite talk about, but I think is pretty cool, except to say that if youre driving a Model S, its right under your nose.

Theres no explicit mention of, Will make Model S owners happy. Such a meaning would have to be inferred.

Keep in mind that the interview was unscripted and the comment was in answer to a journalists question. I used to be one of those who would ask such questions of newsmakers on TV. The resulting answers are not always as precise as the responder may want them to be, if he had time to write them out. So in this case we may be working too hard at parsing every word in an attempt to decipher a somewhat cryptic message.

It's easy to adding lots of one-trick features and make things more complicated.

Leonardo da Vinci said it best - Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

I've worked (tinkered) with PC's for decades since before my college days (286, 386 etc etc) and in the last 5 years I switched to MAC because I wanted to actually USE my devices in my business rather than plan, tinker, optimize them.

My guess: "You guys remember we added the supercharger-hardware for all cars? Even the 40kwhs - which really are 60s? Right? Well, all cars actually got the Performance inverter, too Keep cost down. Its the same! So, all 85kwh owners will from now on be able to "rent" the performance gains of the top model for $49/week. 60kwh owner may rent the 85kwh gains for the same amount. Or for only $15000 you can upgrade over the air!"

If it's a feature that's already on all existing vehicles, and there isn't wiring for any of the extras we'd all like, I'd wonder if it'll be an announcement of the official NHTSA crash test results.

..confused...the Model S was already 5 star rated in every category....that is old news from last year from Elon himself during one of last year's shareholder meetings. something like:
"Model S received 5-star ratings for ALL NHTSA tests. In fact, we exceeded them. If 6 stars were available, we would have received 6."
  • May 1, 2013
    ModelS8794
I believe that represented Tesla's own determination of the MSs crash tests, based on mimicking NHTSAs testing methodology. Or alternatively, represented NHTSAs preliminary testing using Tesla-provided cars, but were not finalized because NHTSA was still in line to receive their own purchased Model S to perform testing on for the official publication.

When I received my car in January, the sticker did not list a crash test rating. And I have not yet heard of a final crash test rating issued subsequently either.

I think we're long overdue for snippiness-style thread for banishing the "I hate Apple", "I hate Microsoft", etc. branch discussions.

    Just an opinion.

    - - - Updated - - -

This has been discussed in depth before and hopefully I can summarize briefly and reasonably accurately.

Facts as I understand them as of May 1, 2013:
    1. Car manufacturers are responsible for performing the specified tests and reporting the results honestly.
    2. NHTSA takes a "random sampling" of market vehicle production by "ordering as a normal person" from the various manufacturers. They don't do every vehicle every year; they have some selection criteria.
    3. When NHTSA has final results for a vehicle they publish them.
    4. Tesla has done #1 for Model S.
    5. NHTSA has probably done #2 for Model S.
    6. For Tesla Model S, #3 hasn't occurred yet.

I actually came here to read reactions to Elon's tweet: Earnings call next week, then Supercharger week after and then... the mystery announcement/demonstration :)

What is going to be demonstrated?
  • May 4, 2013
    DonPedro
I seem to recall that he has previously clarified that this is something that will make current owners of Tesla cars happy, and that is "right under your nose". If it will be announced by means of a demonstration, it has to be something you can do with your current car, so either a hidden feature, a new feature that will be available after a firmware upgrade (5.0?) or some new, physical addon product you can buy.

I think the physical addon idea sounds contrived/unconvincing. And if it is a hidden feature, it still needs a firmware update to enable it, so I feel this is it.

Would "enabling wifi" warrant an announcement and a demonstration? I don't think so. ACC would be wicked. But I have a feeling this is something geniunely new (making it harder to guess at).

I'm hoping for free connectivity. Am I being too optimistic?

Here's my thinking. Pseudo-lease was announced, and their "total cost of ownership" calculations did not include service costs or connectivity costs. Then they announced service was optional. Then they made adjustments to the pseudo-lease, pretty much addressing all complaints, except that they still did not account for connectivity. Now, of course, they might just be waiting to add it to the calculator until the price is announced, but it would be somewhat disingenuous to not provide a disclaimer.

Yeah, ok, so if they charge for connectivity, it will be optional, just like the annual service visits. So maybe not.

Ok, I was thinking about this announcement today and in another thread someone said that a tweet had said "demonstration"

I doubt Elon wants those stupid looking parking sensors on the nose or bumpers of any model S, so what they discovered a way to have parking assist without them. AND, what if they created a system that you don't have to try to use. IE: the nose senses if it going to hit something and stops the car. For instance, if I'm pulling up to someone in front of me in a parking lot, the car sense them and then even though I'm giving the car "acceleration" it drives forward and slows down automatically and then stops 3-6 inches away whether I continue to press the accelerator. That would make an interesting "demonstration". It's under your nose too.

Problem's the hardware, Larry. Folks who've had their cars taken apart and turned into the Huns and such haven't found any.

Since Elon likes the multimedia capability of the car so much - the "any song any time" bit was mentioned in the Q1 letter to shareholders - I think video's coming to the big screen!

To be clear, it is not my contention that all the software hooks in the firmware will support all the new features, such as adaptive cruise control, or collision avoidance, etc., without additional hardware. My suggestion is that some software-based functionality, that does not require additional hardware, may be implemented to current owners for free, and other functions, particularly those that require addtional hardware, may be offered to current owner for a fee.

I wonder if this is a potential profit center for the service centers, since they are probably operating at a loss right now.

What odds you offering? I'd bet against it.

Nope. There is no motor in the front.

My opinion is that Tesla built a common diagnosis system that could be used across all of their existing and future cars. I believe they will use the same system in the Model X, the Model S V2 the Gen 3 .... If I was building a Schema for this diagnosis tool, I'd bung everything I could think of in there even though there may not be any plans to include these things ever!. I just really wished they'd added a field for "Ejector seat - Enabled/Disabled" Now that would get people talking :)

At 11:24 am EDT today Elon tweeted: "There is a way for the Tesla Model S to be recharged throughout the country faster than you could fill a gas tank."

Two minutes later in response to a questioner in that tweet set Elon added: "Don't forget the mystery announcement. Part 5 of the trilogy."

Twitter / elonmusk: There is a way for the Tesla ...

Elon: There is a way for the Tesla Model S to be recharged throughout the country faster than you could fill a gas tank.
bhuwan: yeah, we're waiting for superchargers ;)
Elon: Don't forget the mystery announcement. Part 5 of the trilogy.

Hmm. Battery swap stations? There were some hints of that in the last 10-K (Battery Swapping/Rental for the Model S - Page 6) and would certainly be something that could lead to a cool public demonstration.

Same thread on twitter "@elonmusk only in US or across the globe?"

    Elon replies: "@pratik_shah worldwide"

Battery swap infrastructure would be difficult globally, wouldn't it?

in the above, battery swapping does make sense -- otherwise, why wouldn't it be coupled with the SC announcement? We know the ability was baked into the car, so that would constitute right under your nose. How practical is it though?

I can't imagine what it could be other than battery swap. If they could dump orders of magnitude more power via the SC then they'd have done that already.

We've speculated on them partnering with another company on superchargers, what about battery swap? Swap your Tesla or Toyota battery at any Toyota dealership (or perhaps Mercedes)? He didn't say it was going to happen tomorrow.

I was thinking about battery rental intended to allow battery swapping, and that tweet makes me think about that.

Battery swapping is not a cool demo. Lightning charging is! It's hypercharging; to be announced in combination with the hyperloop of course.

Elon does use the word recharged. Does battery swapping count as recharging? Hmmm.

85kWh in 5 minutes (20C) is possible for some Li+ cells. Plugging in a 1MW charge cable, that might be a nice demo!

If they are adding batteries (or perhaps super-capacitors) at the supercharger stations then couldn't they spool up energy from the grid and then dump it into the car even faster?

Induction as you drive would recharge faster than anything you have to actually stop for.

I don't think so. The limit is what the cells can accept without over heating.

Is my math way off when I calculate that to charge 85kW of power in 2 minutes would take 4250 amps at 400 volts? The batteries couldn't possibly handle that could they?

But how long does it typically take to fill a 20-gallon gas tank? 5 minutes? 7?

What does your math say if you charged 85kW of power in 5 minutes not 2?
