P.S. If a mod can delete the previous message it would be appreciated, something went wrong when I pasted my VIN and the rest of the text went right-aligned and I can't edit my post.

It is exciting to hear about the excitement of MS's being delivered.

My Columbus, Ohio DS can't seem to ping the MS I ordered. He doesn't know if this is b/c it is in a railcar or due to a technical difficulty. He hasn't been able to ping it since it was in New Mexico early last week. I stopped by the SC today and he said the delivery date was originally 6/19 and now he is not sure when it will be. He thinks the MS is in the "black hole" of Chicago.

Has anyone had an issue with their DS not being able to ping their MS during transit?

I'm bumming b/c I was hoping for a delivery this week to celebrate an "insane" birthday.

Is there an informal etiquette for the number of times you ask your DS where your MS is at? I had been asking him every few days and am feeling I am bugging him too much.

For those in the Chicago area 'in transit'....
Passed a fully loaded car carrier on 88 this morning headed towards Villa Park. Saw 3 whites, a grey, and 2 reds. Looks like the wait is nearly over for a lucky dozen or so.

I took delivery of my brand new Ocean Blue 85D today. Could not be happier with it. Beautiful color and rides like a dream. This sucker is fast too. I think I would kill myself with a P85D.

    Electrical_Eng
Hey jmb0629, thanks for sharing your sighting. Not sure where Villa Park is at for MS deliveries. Hopefully this means they are headed out of Chicagoland and that one of the red MS's is headed towards Ohio. Radio silence from my DS is not good especially when the MS is officially late.

    Thanks again.

And congrats pediscoll, on your delivery. I noticed our MS's had the same confirmation date, production date and in transit date. The only difference is the delivery date not being the same. Wish the stars would have aligned for us both!

    jmb0629
Hey Electrical_Eng. The Villa Park service center is on the west side of Chicago. The carrier I passed was on I88 headed eastbound, passed it just before 355. That location makes it pretty unlikely that they were coming from the BNSF logistics site in Joliet. Sorry about that - sounds like a frustrating wait on your end. Hope you have your car soon!
  • Jun 24, 2015
    Electrical_Eng
Thanks for the additional information, jmb0629.

I'm happy to report that the DS let me know that the MS I ordered arrived today at the Columbus Service Center. It arrived later in the day which was frustrating for the DS as he thought it would arrive in the AM. The DS said that he will work OT to make sure the dual chargers are installed and the MS is prepped and ready for delivery tomorrow. This is much appreciated since tomorrow is my mid-life crisis birthday!

The DS said the MS may only have 100 rated miles of range when I take delivery. They do not have SuperCharger stations at the SC. I will have to take it easy on the ride back home. I may need to take a belated "insane" birthday! Can't wait to be an official Tesla owner!

Just updated the spreadsheet for my car...
Order confirmed 6/6 and the car was ready for delivery (in Cincinnati) 18 days later. We pushed the actual delivery date out to July 2nd due to travel.
Strangely, we were in San Francisco when the car came out of production... beginning a road trip down the PCH...in a rental impala. Wish I had arranged a factory pick up. Sigh.
  • Jul 8, 2015
    bonaire
kmtl - arranging a factory pickup would have cost you up to 9% sales tax more than you paid. You'd have to pay CA Sales tax and then perhaps get some back in your home state from the difference.

Thanks, that helps! Honestly, on top of the additional costs of factory delivery (plus shipping back to OH), it would have been a bad idea anyway for a noob owner to dive right into 1500 mile road trip (Palo Alto, SF, Marin, Sierras, Carmel, PCH, Laguna, San Diego..and everywhere in between) with no prior EV experience. The Impala was actually a great car for this trip - not pretty, but it was big, comfy, relatively quick and efficient.

Do you feel the same way now that you've had a week with your Tesla?
  • Jul 8, 2015
    kmtl
Actually, yes...but I meant relative to other rental ice options. I paid thrifty $650 for two weeks, had about 450 range out of a tank and my sons had a huge back seat. The only'good' car I looked at renting was an A4 from silvercar...which would have cost a bundle and been cramped. Had I been in the millennium falcon the trip would have been more fun and more frustrating at the same time.

Spreadsheet has been updated to allow for 70, 90, 90D, and P90D configurations. I haven't determined how to deal with Ludicrous option yet on the P95D so if you order one just put something about it in the comments and I'll adjust when that happens. Once I figure out how I'm dealing with this I'll make the Q4 2015 sheet.
  • Jul 18, 2015

    Maybe a model choice of P90L for the up-optioned P90D + Ludacrous?
  • Jul 18, 2015
    breser
I thought about that but Tesla has a tendency of rearranging options like this. So I'm sitting back and waiting to see what they do somewhat. Since they have been known to make significant changes just a few days after they've changed things before.
  • Jul 18, 2015
    bonaire
Right, they may offer an "Usher" option for S85D owners and maybe a "50-cent" option for 70D owners. :)
  • Jul 18, 2015
    breser

Actually I was more expecting them to make Ludicrous speed available on P85D's. They've flat out said they can do. Some people obviously won't care about the extra range. If there isn't already there probably is a thread of outraged people about the extra $3k being tied to this.

I've been waiting on an 85d to roll out of production. It started on July 13th, so we're at 11 days now which seems like it's a bit long given that the car was marked "hot" at the beginning of production. I was speaking with the delivery specialist and he mentioned that they just started doing a more exhaustive quality control process at the factory, not that they were seeing a lot of issues, but that they had just implemented some new protocols. Sounded like this new process extends the amount of time a car spends in the post-assembly inspection stage. Thought it was interesting and it'll be interesting to see if production times extend as a whole because of this. Judging from the spreadsheet, I see several orders that went in to production later than mine and have been done for a few days, but I'm sure there are a few factors that can influence that.
  • Jul 25, 2015
    bonaire
Wolfie, one buyer in California had their car in production from 6/22 to 7/22. Lately, the spreadsheet shows most times are 5-7 days lately. I do see a recent one 7/21-7/24 so that is 3 (destined for Denmark).
  • Jul 25, 2015

My Car went into production on 7/15 (on or about). The web site flipped on 7/13 but the email from Tesla and my delivery specialized arrived on 7/15 and 7/16. So who knows.

My car is still in production. On 7/22 my delivery specialist told me the car was in the middle stages. On Thursday 7/23 in the evening he told me it was in the final stages of production (post assembly inspection stage) and that he expects it to ship out on Monday 7/27. So that would put me at about 12-14 days "in production". Longer than most cars in the spreadsheet.

Also when I ordered my car on 7/4 the delivery estimate was August (mid). It changed to Late July after I ordered and stayed that way till 7/22 when it changed back to August.
  • Jul 25, 2015
    GOPJEW
I ordered my 85D on 6/30, Production started 7/15 and was complete 7/21 advising the car was "in Transit". Original Delivery Estimate (East Coast) was "Late August" - as of this morning it is now "September". 6 Weeks to ship a car to the East Coast?

I doubt it, that's telling me that it's held up at the Factory for some reason so I am hopinh it is better quality control and not because there's a problem with it. Unfortunately, a gentlemen who ordered a 70D on the same day and same delivery lcoation is getting same messages...and our DS is on vacation and out of the country until 7/31 so living in the dark a bit.

Fingers crossed on this end! Mine also flipped on the 13th, but didn't receive the email until the 15th or 16th. Just checked and it's still in production, day 13.
  • Jul 26, 2015
    Omar Shahine
Have you asked your delivery specialist what the status is?
  • Jul 26, 2015
    WolfieSenior
Yeah, he mentioned that as far as he could tell it should roll off soon but said that they don't have much visibility on where a car is at. We're under a bit of a timeline as we're moving halfway across the country mid-August and we had plenty of assurances and 99.9% certainties that we'd take delivery before late July. Even when we ordered in late June, we were looking at fleet vehicles because we knew the timeline was tight. The sales person said that they were almost certain they could get us an end of line production slot of July 13th, which seemed like it would give us plenty of breathing room. Once the order was confirmed, the delivery specialist said that the sales person was very misinformed, as July 13th would've been the earliest it would enter production.

We're planning on using the vehicle to transport ourselves, our kids, our dog, and some essentials on the three day drive. Worst case scenario, we rent something one way...not thrilled about the cost of that n'or the cost of either needing to fly black to get the car, pay to deliver it to a new state, or have to switch the delivery to other state instead (sales tax). There's still a good chance that it'll all work out, but the window is closing for sure.

I know things happen, just feels like a few people at Tesla might need to lower their "99.9% certainty" threshold, especially going by some of the delays others have seen. Maybe this has come up before, but with their super high-tech factory, shouldn't a delivery specialist be able to speak to someone on the other end to find out exactly where a car is in production along with a very accurate eta?

If it makes you feel any better, I ordered my 85D on 7/3, and my delivery estimate changed the other day from late August to September as well. I'm on the east coast as well (NJ). Emailed my DS to see if he has any info - waiting to hear back.
  • Jul 26, 2015
    WolfieSenior
Ha, it doesn't make me feel better, makes me feel like my chances just got worse! I'm hoping if it finishes production within the next day or two, they'll have no problem getting it one state over (in Oregon for a couple of more weeks) in time.

Wolfie & Emmlex - I think for us all, the lack of communication is the frustrating part. When I custom ordered my wife's Audi, although Audi doesn't "track" your specific vehicle, I got regular updates from a human who was always available to answer my questions - proactively!

The constant refreshing of the MyTesla page is overrated...

78Lion - Xander just emailed me to advise that the September message was a mistake. I assume yours is similar...

"It is currently expected to arrive in Chicago to change lines on the 29[SUP]th[/SUP] of July. From there it will go to New Jersey and then Rockville via truck for the final leg. Our system is showing an ETA to New Jersey of the 5[SUP]th[/SUP] of August. From there we can expect an additional three to four days to get to Rockville and then about 72 hours of final preparation once we have the car. Right now August 11[SUP]th[/SUP] through 16[SUP]th[/SUP] is a reasonable estimate for your delivery."

Sorry to hear that! Just got a call from my DS saying our's has cleared production and should be up here next week. The website hasn't been updated yet, but he had put in an inquiry with the factory to ping it. Fortunately, it sounds like we'll have it about 4 days before we hit the road for the move. Hope there's more good news to go around for everyone else having unexpected delays.

By marking delivery for January 2016, most likely will get a Vin # from the 2015 calendar year. Yes, should have probably ordered much later in the year to get a 2016 Vin # and also access to feature changes. Now that they are setting a $500 change fee, it doesn't make a lot of sense to order with a long delivery window.

I'm a bit frustrated by the lack of proactive communication, everything since the intro email from my DS has been a response only after I've reached out to ask for the current status. For example, on 7/17 I was told that now that it was moving this way the estimated delivery date was 7/28. I didn't find out the estimate changed to arriving on 8/3 until I sent an email asking for an update on 7/27 (day before I thought it would be here). Now 8/3 is almost over and I still haven't heard anything.

Once the car gets to the local service center, what do they actually do before the customer picks it up?

The issue is that the shipping part of the process is silliness. The damn car is on a train (and untraceable) for weeks. If I order a $3 pack of razor blades from Amazon I can trace the shipment in near real time until it shows up at my house - usually I can see if they dropped it in the mailbox or on the porch! I understand the reasons that the car can't be traced like that - but nonetheless it's stupid. My car sat in Fremont waiting to get loaded on a train for eight or nine days. Ridiculous. Every single e-commerce site offers expedited shipping, every single carrier (including the frigging Postal Service) has tracking, but NO NO NO - not on a $117K car. It's on a train to Birmingham - maybe Alabama, maybe the magical sea train to Birmingham England. Not sure until it arrives.

This isn't just a problem with Tesla. A friend of mine just ordered a custom 2016 Chevrolet Corvette, and his is being shipped via train as well. I think the big issue is that 98% of the customers would baulk at a $4,000+ charge to get their car a few days early...
  • Aug 6, 2015
    wayner
Yes, but isn't this easily solvable with a Tesla? Just activate the Tesla app for your car when it leaves the factory in Fremont. Then you will know exactly where it is at all times using the app on your phone. Why can't they do that?
  • Aug 6, 2015
    Armadillos
They don't allow access to your car until you have taken delivery. You can technically drive the car with the phone app, so if someone found out that their car was at the Service center via the app, they technically could drive off with it via the app before paying for the car.

Estimated Delivery: Late September... Today got pushed to "September - Early October" :cursing:

Any one else in the low 100k VINs (mine is 100,554) getting estimated delivery dates pushed?

well, what do you know? I just checked mytesla page and my 70D ordered 7/23, vin and confirmed on 7/30 also just got changed to the same range- when I first ordered it was early September, then got changed to just September.... I'm pretty annoyed that they haven't started building it after 2 1/2 weeks. Looks like they are giving higher priority to the 85 and 90 models. And I was an inch away from ordering the 90d but I decided to save the money. Little did I know that it would make me have to wait an extra month or more for the car!

Unfortunately, TM has always prioritized higher margin cars. So, I see them pushing out as many 90Ds as possible from here till the end of the quarter. Frustrating: yes...Predictable: yes

What at annoys me is that they're not being honest about the production estimates- if they want to build the high end cars first, fine, that's they're right as a company. But don't give the exact same delivery estimates off the bat and then change them. I'm turning in a car this week on the basis of the original build estimate (which I was told by tesla employees would be very close to reality), and it will be inconveniencing me to be without it.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem right - my 90D ordered July 24th went from estimated delivery late September to October-early November :crying:. As of now, my car still hasn't entered production yet. Very sad!

There is a reason it's called an estimate. It's subject to change. On the order tracking page it has a disclaimer telling you as much. We're all very used to places like Amazon boxing stuff up and shipping it to us next day. That works because a great deal of effort has been expended around warehousing what we are expected to want and then shipping it the same day we order it. You're never going to reach the same standard with bespoke products. Tesla is going to move orders around so as to hit the optimal setup for them. Whoever at Tesla told you that the order estimate was accurate shouldn't have told you that. But unfortunately, it's not unusual for Tesla employees to be wrong. What they should have told you is that it was the best estimate and that things are always subject to change. Don't plan your life around the estimate.

Comparing the time frames for US orders to Switzerland orders isn't going to help you very much. Tesla does not build orders in a first in first out fashion. It wouldn't make sense, even for US orders. Locations with fewer cars being shipped are always going to have slower delivery time frames because of the logistics of moving the car. Cars do not move on a truck carrying a single car. They move on a train or boats with who knows how many cars or a truck with around 7 cars. They are going to maximize the utilization of these loads. Let's say they move a car to Tillburg and finish assembly on it, they are not going to put one car on a truck to go to Switzerland. They're going to fill that truck. So when there is a full truck going to wherever you're taking delivery then your car will be on it. Same goes for vehicles in the US going from the factory or rail yards.

This also means that high volume sales areas are going to see a lot less waiting because they can keep filling up the trucks and keep delivering vehicles. It isn't fair, but it is actually the most efficient way to process cars. The alternative is a much higher delivery cost.

Not always true. When I got a Ford Energi, I was able to get the train car mine was on and use the RR's web site to track it from Hermosillo Mexico, all the way to San Antonio. So I knew it was here before the dealership.

So... if you can get what car it is on, you can track it as it passes depots and updates online.

I would GUESS that Telsa knows exactly what's been ordered and how close to production they are, and would want to optimize build rate such that similar parts are going in and paint colors are done in groups. I could see less popular colors wait to get a bunch up. If they could predict things better, thay'd stop making cars and go to Vegas. I would imagine that's why cars get pushed out is enough people ordered just the right car to bump a group forward in line.

With my car it got bumped twice as they first had a delay on part and then another (sunroof was one).

Yes, the same exact thing happened to my 70D this past weekend, VIN #999xx. It was "September", and now says "September-October", even though it has been "In Production" for about a week now. And, my DOS emailed me today to "Just to let you know, your Model S is currently in the paint process of production!"
I'm soooo confused. :crying: I also wonder how much of it has to do with coordinating shipments of cars to the same state? Maybe there aren't enough orders in south Florida right now, but I find that hard to believe.

Paint is a significant road block for their production right now. I'm not sure where they are with the new paint shop they were installing, I'd guess it's almost done but until that goes in they have limited capacity. We've seen cars sitting waiting for paint for the past 9 months or so.

Our patience is definitely being tested. I keep telling myself patience is a virtue, but its not helping. Whats worrisome is that previous posts throughout this thread have Ss getting through production in a week (for June/July orders). @keydiver, when was your order confirmed/VIN generated?

Are any of the production delays related to the Fremont factory losing power from the crane incident last week? Not sure if its just coincidence or if it is directly related, but it seems that a lot of us that ordered in the late July/early August time frame is experiencing our delivery dates getting pushed back. The part that irks me is that the Tesla order page is showing Late September for all new orders (as of this writing) except for the non-D 70 which is shown as Late October. I know, its all an estimate

Latest update was they plan to start painting Model X bodies there this month but won't be transitioning Model S until they are confident it won't cause further production delays.

Well, my 70D updated to "September 7, 2015 - September 21, 2015" today, so maybe it made it past the paint hurdle! Originally I was told mid-September, so now it seems its back on track. I'm sure that a good bit of that time will be the long train ride to Florida.
The next day it has now changed to"Production Complete. Your Model S is in transit from the factory."

I'm seeing something similar, in terms of the status going into production but then the estimated delivery jumping from "Late August - September" to "September - Early October." Heard "it's being painted" from my DS as well.

It's actually great to hear someone else just experienced this too, and then their production still completed.

I can't imagine what powers their supply chain, manufacturing line, or logistics, let alone what business logic they use to try to translate that into an estimate in this webapp of theirs, but right now I'm guessing the system is simpler than we think, not terribly accurate and errs on the side of being conservative... Well, you could also call it what I'm hoping for.

Mys S90D #102758 currently says "Late August - September." My DS said though that it would be Late September-October. Given that mine is still in the production queue and hasn't actually entered production yet, I tend to believe the DS. I don't know how they calculate the web site delivery prediction but something tells me it's only updated when the production status of the car changes.

Hah! Awesome. I was thinking of doing that and you beat me to it.

Right now seems like cars are spending weeks just to reach the east coast of the US. Someone more knowledgeable about logistics might know if that's good or bad in the scheme of things. There's apparently a highly complicated system at work; days of variability makes sense if there isn't enough volume for continuous dedicated transport to a particular destination.

Right now it seems like I'll end up waiting roughly a month for transit to New York.

My car is also on its way to Dedham. It finished production on 8/28 so it has now been 13 days. I have not been told where it is (nor have I asked -- not wishing to annoy the Delivery Specialist) but the official forecast is for delivery September 29-October 12. If true, that would be a transit time of between 30 days and 42 days, which seems quite long. The DS told me today, however, that it might get to Dedham before September 25.
I am trying not to get my hopes up because then I would be frustrated if does not arrive earlier....

My timeframe seems to be shaping up to be longer than others are describing... ordered 85D on 8/20 with an estimated delivery of late September... confirmed 8/27... entered production around 9/2 (not sure exactly)... as of 9/10 it is still In Production, but I noticed that the estimated delivery is now 10/7 to 10/21. I don't recall seeing a date range like this before. Based on other indications that production takes about a week and delivery 2-4 weeks after that (in Maryland), it seems slow. But what do I know... I guess good things come to those who wait (patiently).

AuKirk, it appears we might have "siblings"
I too have a 85D that I ordered on 08/20 with the same estimated late september delivery date. Confirmed also on 08/27 and also entered production 9/2 !!! My VIN ends in 3955. What is yours?!!
Mine also shows In Production as of this moment, but mine still shows a more generic delivery date of "september- early october". I am in Michigan. What color/ options is yours? My DS is expecting it to arrive in Chicago last week of September which is where I pick up from.
    My build:
S85D, Deep blue metallic, Pano roof, standard 19" wheels, grey next gen seats, piano black decor, black alcantara, Autopilot, Prem. interior and lighting, Smart Air and Subzero. I also got the $2000 credit by using a VA referral! Waiting (im)patiently just like you. Cheers!

Mine ends in 4066, so we have a few other siblings between us on the production line!

    Very similar...
Model S 85D, except Midnight Silver Metallic Paint, regular black seats, minus Smart Air but added UHFS

My Tesla HPWC is shining a bright green light at me in my garage now, after the electrician installed it today, which is making it even harder to wait. At least impatience loves company...

Got an email this morning from my DS that production is complete and the vehicle will be en route to Rockville in the next 2-3 days. He indicates we are on track for "late september or very early October" delivery (despite the website listing 10/7-10/21).

Someone messed up the permissions on the sheet. The list of people with elevated rights has grown. breser, one problem was that Oct-Dec kept being sorted, filtered and that causes the history in GoogleDoc to grow in size, slowing down the ability to know what changed and when. I think when someone was on the page, they thought only they saw the spreadsheet - but applying Filter or sorting is shown to everyone and tracked as an update. Jul-Sept was always in good shape.

Some Denmark orders on the sheet are confirmed after yours and are in production. I think there is a preference for the recent push for Denmark deliveries due to the luxury tax break.
I see an 8/6 Netherlands confirm (100192) in prod (8/27-9/4) What's the last six digits of your Vin #? I have to believe yours would enter production in the next two weeks.
