This isn't just a problem with Tesla. A friend of mine just ordered a custom 2016 Chevrolet Corvette, and his is being shipped via train as well. I think the big issue is that 98% of the customers would baulk at a $4,000+ charge to get their car a few days early...
  • Aug 6, 2015
    wayner
Yes, but isn't this easily solvable with a Tesla? Just activate the Tesla app for your car when it leaves the factory in Fremont. Then you will know exactly where it is at all times using the app on your phone. Why can't they do that?
  • Aug 6, 2015
    Armadillos
They don't allow access to your car until you have taken delivery. You can technically drive the car with the phone app, so if someone found out that their car was at the Service center via the app, they technically could drive off with it via the app before paying for the car.

Makes sense. At least if I'd had the option of paying for truck shipping I would only have myself to blame for this silly wait.

Today My Tesla screen reads "In Production. The Tesla Factory is building your Model S." That was quick! My delivery still simply says "September", but I *think* that means things are progressing quickly, doesn't it? It normally says that the car is in the production queue and parts are being gathered.

well, what do you know? I just checked mytesla page and my 70D ordered 7/23, vin and confirmed on 7/30 also just got changed to the same range- when I first ordered it was early September, then got changed to just September.... I'm pretty annoyed that they haven't started building it after 2 1/2 weeks. Looks like they are giving higher priority to the 85 and 90 models. And I was an inch away from ordering the 90d but I decided to save the money. Little did I know that it would make me have to wait an extra month or more for the car!
  • Aug 16, 2015
    AlMc
Unfortunately, TM has always prioritized higher margin cars. So, I see them pushing out as many 90Ds as possible from here till the end of the quarter. Frustrating: yes...Predictable: yes
  • Aug 16, 2015
    lomli

What at annoys me is that they're not being honest about the production estimates- if they want to build the high end cars first, fine, that's they're right as a company. But don't give the exact same delivery estimates off the bat and then change them. I'm turning in a car this week on the basis of the original build estimate (which I was told by tesla employees would be very close to reality), and it will be inconveniencing me to be without it.
  • Aug 16, 2015
    Pguich
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem right - my 90D ordered July 24th went from estimated delivery late September to October-early November :crying:. As of now, my car still hasn't entered production yet. Very sad!
  • Aug 16, 2015
    breser
There is a reason it's called an estimate. It's subject to change. On the order tracking page it has a disclaimer telling you as much. We're all very used to places like Amazon boxing stuff up and shipping it to us next day. That works because a great deal of effort has been expended around warehousing what we are expected to want and then shipping it the same day we order it. You're never going to reach the same standard with bespoke products. Tesla is going to move orders around so as to hit the optimal setup for them. Whoever at Tesla told you that the order estimate was accurate shouldn't have told you that. But unfortunately, it's not unusual for Tesla employees to be wrong. What they should have told you is that it was the best estimate and that things are always subject to change. Don't plan your life around the estimate.

Comparing the time frames for US orders to Switzerland orders isn't going to help you very much. Tesla does not build orders in a first in first out fashion. It wouldn't make sense, even for US orders. Locations with fewer cars being shipped are always going to have slower delivery time frames because of the logistics of moving the car. Cars do not move on a truck carrying a single car. They move on a train or boats with who knows how many cars or a truck with around 7 cars. They are going to maximize the utilization of these loads. Let's say they move a car to Tillburg and finish assembly on it, they are not going to put one car on a truck to go to Switzerland. They're going to fill that truck. So when there is a full truck going to wherever you're taking delivery then your car will be on it. Same goes for vehicles in the US going from the factory or rail yards.

This also means that high volume sales areas are going to see a lot less waiting because they can keep filling up the trucks and keep delivering vehicles. It isn't fair, but it is actually the most efficient way to process cars. The alternative is a much higher delivery cost.

Not always true. When I got a Ford Energi, I was able to get the train car mine was on and use the RR's web site to track it from Hermosillo Mexico, all the way to San Antonio. So I knew it was here before the dealership.

So... if you can get what car it is on, you can track it as it passes depots and updates online.

I would GUESS that Telsa knows exactly what's been ordered and how close to production they are, and would want to optimize build rate such that similar parts are going in and paint colors are done in groups. I could see less popular colors wait to get a bunch up. If they could predict things better, thay'd stop making cars and go to Vegas. I would imagine that's why cars get pushed out is enough people ordered just the right car to bump a group forward in line.

With my car it got bumped twice as they first had a delay on part and then another (sunroof was one).

Yes, the same exact thing happened to my 70D this past weekend, VIN #999xx. It was "September", and now says "September-October", even though it has been "In Production" for about a week now. And, my DOS emailed me today to "Just to let you know, your Model S is currently in the paint process of production!"
I'm soooo confused. :crying: I also wonder how much of it has to do with coordinating shipments of cars to the same state? Maybe there aren't enough orders in south Florida right now, but I find that hard to believe.
  • Aug 17, 2015

Paint is a significant road block for their production right now. I'm not sure where they are with the new paint shop they were installing, I'd guess it's almost done but until that goes in they have limited capacity. We've seen cars sitting waiting for paint for the past 9 months or so.

Our patience is definitely being tested. I keep telling myself patience is a virtue, but its not helping. Whats worrisome is that previous posts throughout this thread have Ss getting through production in a week (for June/July orders). @keydiver, when was your order confirmed/VIN generated?

Are any of the production delays related to the Fremont factory losing power from the crane incident last week? Not sure if its just coincidence or if it is directly related, but it seems that a lot of us that ordered in the late July/early August time frame is experiencing our delivery dates getting pushed back. The part that irks me is that the Tesla order page is showing Late September for all new orders (as of this writing) except for the non-D 70 which is shown as Late October. I know, its all an estimate

Latest update was they plan to start painting Model X bodies there this month but won't be transitioning Model S until they are confident it won't cause further production delays.

Well, my 70D updated to "September 7, 2015 - September 21, 2015" today, so maybe it made it past the paint hurdle! Originally I was told mid-September, so now it seems its back on track. I'm sure that a good bit of that time will be the long train ride to Florida.
The next day it has now changed to"Production Complete. Your Model S is in transit from the factory."

I'm seeing something similar, in terms of the status going into production but then the estimated delivery jumping from "Late August - September" to "September - Early October." Heard "it's being painted" from my DS as well.

It's actually great to hear someone else just experienced this too, and then their production still completed.

I can't imagine what powers their supply chain, manufacturing line, or logistics, let alone what business logic they use to try to translate that into an estimate in this webapp of theirs, but right now I'm guessing the system is simpler than we think, not terribly accurate and errs on the side of being conservative... Well, you could also call it what I'm hoping for.

Mys S90D #102758 currently says "Late August - September." My DS said though that it would be Late September-October. Given that mine is still in the production queue and hasn't actually entered production yet, I tend to believe the DS. I don't know how they calculate the web site delivery prediction but something tells me it's only updated when the production status of the car changes.

Hah! Awesome. I was thinking of doing that and you beat me to it.

Right now seems like cars are spending weeks just to reach the east coast of the US. Someone more knowledgeable about logistics might know if that's good or bad in the scheme of things. There's apparently a highly complicated system at work; days of variability makes sense if there isn't enough volume for continuous dedicated transport to a particular destination.

Right now it seems like I'll end up waiting roughly a month for transit to New York.

My car is also on its way to Dedham. It finished production on 8/28 so it has now been 13 days. I have not been told where it is (nor have I asked -- not wishing to annoy the Delivery Specialist) but the official forecast is for delivery September 29-October 12. If true, that would be a transit time of between 30 days and 42 days, which seems quite long. The DS told me today, however, that it might get to Dedham before September 25.
I am trying not to get my hopes up because then I would be frustrated if does not arrive earlier....

My timeframe seems to be shaping up to be longer than others are describing... ordered 85D on 8/20 with an estimated delivery of late September... confirmed 8/27... entered production around 9/2 (not sure exactly)... as of 9/10 it is still In Production, but I noticed that the estimated delivery is now 10/7 to 10/21. I don't recall seeing a date range like this before. Based on other indications that production takes about a week and delivery 2-4 weeks after that (in Maryland), it seems slow. But what do I know... I guess good things come to those who wait (patiently).

AuKirk, it appears we might have "siblings"
I too have a 85D that I ordered on 08/20 with the same estimated late september delivery date. Confirmed also on 08/27 and also entered production 9/2 !!! My VIN ends in 3955. What is yours?!!
Mine also shows In Production as of this moment, but mine still shows a more generic delivery date of "september- early october". I am in Michigan. What color/ options is yours? My DS is expecting it to arrive in Chicago last week of September which is where I pick up from.
    My build:
S85D, Deep blue metallic, Pano roof, standard 19" wheels, grey next gen seats, piano black decor, black alcantara, Autopilot, Prem. interior and lighting, Smart Air and Subzero. I also got the $2000 credit by using a VA referral! Waiting (im)patiently just like you. Cheers!

breser, one problem was that Oct-Dec kept being sorted, filtered and that causes the history in GoogleDoc to grow in size, slowing down the ability to know what changed and when. I think when someone was on the page, they thought only they saw the spreadsheet - but applying Filter or sorting is shown to everyone and tracked as an update. Jul-Sept was always in good shape.

Some Denmark orders on the sheet are confirmed after yours and are in production. I think there is a preference for the recent push for Denmark deliveries due to the luxury tax break.

    Confirmed: 08/27
    Entered production: 09/02
    Production complete/ in transit: 09/16
    Estimated delivery: 09/23 to 09/30

I finally got the status update this morning- although on 09/14, the status actually pushed back and showed delivery Oct 2 to Oct 16!! Not sure what changed in 2 days but I am not complaining! I ordered my this Monday. Spec as follows:

    • Model S85 (Rear wheel drive only)
    • Deep Blue Metallic paint
    • Panorama roof
    • Black alcantara lining
    • Black Next Generation seats
    • Autopilot package
    • Premium interior and lighting
    • Air suspension
    • Winter package
    • Trunk seats
    • Winter wheels
Living in Norway, the winter package is a must, as are winter wheels. As for the color; most Teslas around here are black or red, with some white and grey. The blue is by far the least common color, and to me the prettiest one.

I live in a major city, and have yet to experience needing four wheel drive. I have driven front and rear wheel driven cars for years, and have no problems handling them on slippery roads. Norwegian roads are generally well salted, and where they are not, I drive slow enough that it's not going to be a problem. The four wheel drive is a solution to a problem that I do not have, but it creates a new one; lack of space. With two kids (one three months, the other three and a half years), we need to be able to pack as much as possible in the boot (egads how I hate the term "frunk"). The oldest one will be riding in the rear until she outgrows it - she already loves doing so in my inlaws' car.

That means that luggage for trips will have to go in the front, which is no problem. Add to that the fact that the four wheel drive would have added just north of US$4500 to the price, and I'm taking the savings and smiling all the way to the bank. Buying the car is tight, moneywise, but we can swing it with RWD only. AWD wasn't in the budget, nor in our needs.

Congratulations on your order, your reasoning about AWD vs. RWD is very razumno of you (as your name suggests) :)

    Happy driving!!

My delivery forecast was updated on the MyTesla page today to show September 22-29. It had said that it would be September 28-October 12.
So that is an improvement, and could be as early as next Tuesday!
The status language implies the car is at the service center. So maybe the red Model S I saw in the lot when I drove by yesterday was mine, awaiting prep...!
    Very excited, can hardly wait!

PS: I updated the tracker accordingly.

Seems I'm missing from the spreadsheet; I entered myself in the 2015 Oct/Nov/Dec Vehicles pane, but am missing now, not showing up in searches. Also, rows 86 through 294 are no longer visible. What's up with that?

    Edit: Oh well, re-added myself.

The Good/Great News: I am scheduled for delivery next Friday, 9/25!

The Bad/Frustrating News: The construction of my rear porch and driveway are way behind schedule. They were supposed to be done and have the driveway paved by 9/1 when I ordered the Tesla and had the HPWC installed, but they have at least another few more weeks before I will be able to get the car into the garage. Therefore, I guess I will be public station charging for the first few weeks, unless I pull onto the lawn and can get the HPWC cord to reach through garage window to the MS. In the meantime, I am signing up for EVGo and ChargePoint, and just ordered a CHAdeMO adapter.

Did you search? I thought mine was gone, but looks like someone just re-sorted it.
  • 1/1/2015

Someone is in there daily doing re-sorting, filtering and general crazy spreadsheeting. I wish breser would lock down filter and sort options from people. This Oct-Dec sheet differs from the others. And whoever is doing it doesn't realize everyone else sees their actions.
  • Sep 21, 2015

I did search, and twice my entry has been removed. It's still there now, though, so all's good.

That would be Grey. Tesla changed the name but has not changed the actual color.

Investigating. Someone made a copy of the 2015 Oct/Nov/Dec today and I've now locked the sheet from all edits while I try to figure out what happened.

It's locked down as much as I think I can without preventing people to edit directly. At this point I'm planning to replace the spreadsheet with something more akin to the firmware tracking system. The spreadsheet is becoming too big to be manageable. It's difficult to keep it looking nice since people are always messing up the formatting. Entries end up being stale because I've got no good way of prompting people to come back and update their entries.
  • Sep 21, 2015
    breser
Someone keeps doing some mass edits and in the process has wiped out some entries. Due to the way they were editing it's really difficult to bring the old entries back. I'd have to spend a ton of time going through and trying to figure out what was gone. It'd be a very manual process. So I'm just going to ask people to restore their entries if they've been lost. I suspect this only impacts a handful of people.

I stand corrected, the Q4 2015 sheet was not locked down like it should have been. This is now fixed. If people want to sort the sheet to look at just use the filter features. You can create temporary filters and sorts and only you can see these. Now that the sheet is locked down properly it's not possible to manipulate all the rows so publicly viewed sorts won't happen anymore.

I've eliminated a bunch of unused rows and columns. Especially on the older tabs that are long since past. This should help reduce the slowness of the sheet. I can still add more rows if they end up being needed. But the sheet has become very slow as the number of entries has grown.

The status reads "Your Model S is in transit from the factory." Is this a new status message? I don't see the option in the spreadsheet.
  • Sep 28, 2015

I was thinking something entirely custom. I'm hoping to eliminate the need to enter a description of the build entirely by using the option codes, which are exposed in the link to the build PDF on Tesla's website or via the API after the order.

Feel free to delete one of the two entries for my order... I only entered it once, so not sure why it got duplicated. I tried to correct it but got the equivalent of a 'permission denied'. I also tweaked the 'Days from X to Y' formula's last week, but now can't propagate the forumla to lines which don't have it..

Maybe it'd be a good idea to push the additional tabs of orders past to a separate sheet instead to help w/ the slowness / stability issues.

    Order confirmed yesterday!

I've been following (stalking) since the Model S launch, and now I am so excited to finally be joining the family!

Thanks to so many of you for great threads. Really helped me decide the exact right config for me.

    2015 90D | Deep Blue Metallic | Pano | 19" Cyclones | Tan NexGen | Glossy Obeche | Black Headliner | Autopilot | Prem. Int&Light | UHFS | Order Confirmed: 9/30/15

    Added to Google sheet.

Based on VINs, since Sep 27 until today (Oct 9) Tesla got 1636 orders. Which is only 136 orders per day. This doesn't sound like busy period at all.
PS. I was confirmed today, so hopefully this means faster delivery for me =)

Just FYI the spreadsheet seems to be down/non-existent at the moment. Went to check it and I'm getting an error...anyone else having issues?

What is the last VIN attributed until today? I don't know why but I can't access to the google spreadsheet today (link not exist says google drive). But by what I can saw in other sites, the highest VIN for 27 Sep was 109386 and VIN 111471 for Oct 07. So 2085 VINs in ten days, that's more than 208 per day, not bad...
  • Oct 9, 2015
    AMPd
I don't think you can base the number of orders on the vin #'s
The only thing the vin numbers show is that 1636 cars are ready or went into production.
  • Oct 9, 2015
    thx1139
90 days at 136 per day is 12240
90 days at 208 per day is 18720

Tesla hits the 2nd number they will be over the 50K threshold for the year without any Model X deliveries. They hit the first then they need 4500 Model X deliveries.

In terms of logistics this is quite a ramp expectation. Can you explain how you would do this? I was part of the 2015 sales estimate contest here on TMC and my number is 47,690.

    Prediction Competition for 2015

By the way, I also "won" the 2014 contest. Look at the link above and see how many people really swung for the fences with their estimates.

Your forecast delivery is a month earlier than my last estimate (late Dec) and your vin is also later... Mines 1055xx. There must be some logic but I don't quite understand it. I'd be really happy if I got mine before Christmas - 10 weeks!?

For those who might still be unsure of where the estimated delivery date can be found in My Tesla, it's in the box that gives information about Pick Up, including what service center you're picking it up at, to the right of that information (the service center, that is).

    - - - Updated - - -

It seems the spreadsheet is no longer generating the Days from Conf to Prod start; at least it didn't for me, and I can't fill it in manually.

85 d order confirmed October 24th. Wondering what estimates are as far as production and delivery to Florida? They are saying December I guess it depends on shipping via rail or truck.

Also wondering how long it has been lately from confirmation to start of production?

  • Oct 29, 2015
    ArtInCT
Some napkin math using data from the spreadsheet shows the number of days from Confirmation to In Production can be as low as 6 days with an average around 7 to 10 days to a high of 23 to 30 days. Seems like a pretty smooth running operation now.

Order confirmed Oct. 29th for mid-December delivery @ Devon, Pa.

Received and initial informational email from the DS. I was interested to find out about an external-type EZ-Pass transponder that supposedly can mount inside the front nosecone. I haven't really had any problems with the standard windshield-mounted version on my current S85. But, "out of sight" would be an improvement. So, I will definitely look into this.

You can request the license plate ezpass transponder from your ezpass. Then you can mount it with long tie wraps on the wide metal cross member behind the nose one.
