Shout out to the Austin crew. Did an amazing job during my visit and drive today. Ended up ordering P85 (from Colorado rep on phone) and they made it fun.

These guys are good! Thumbs way up.

Perhaps a bit excessive, but I like this idea (especially for areas with a high volumes of Model S). I wonder if this is this going to become common at new service centers? And, since they have limited availability (store hours), will Tesla put them on the supercharger map?

So today I went to my local store and did a test drive. It was very cool. I was struck by how much more the car is like a hi-tech gadget than a luxury vehicle.

One note that I think is very important though. If they want women to buy this car, they need to have some female workers in the store. That would be another good way for Tesla to break the mold of the traditional dealership model. I should note that the sales guy there (who was great in general) asked me if I was going to be driving the car too on the test drive (in addition to my boyfriend that is).

This while I'm the one who has been trolling the TMC forums for a year and talking about this company non-stop for five years.

I took my first test drive in 2012. The tesla employee who helped us was female. She was also the store manager.

I observed lots of people asking for brochures last night, they were all told to go to the web site. The least they can do is give purchasers a nice brochure or something to have on the coffee table.

FWIW, our Menlo Park store manager (at time of our order in Feb. 2013) was female.

They have women in the Bellevue and Seattle stores. Totally unscientific, but I think the gender balance is fine in both of those locations.

Found the new Palo Alto store (service center too?). This used to be the Volvo dealer and next to it was a sort of joint venture of a Mclaren dealer and Fisker/used car Dealer. When Fisker closed, it became just used cars and Mclaren stayed. Then I saw Volvo moved into the old Fisker/used car location next to Mclaren. Now Tesla is taking the old Volvo building. So its Mclaren, Volvo, then Tesla. Mclaren, as you can see in the background, is on El Camino and Arastradero. I think its a great spot. Volvo=safety and Mclaren=performance.... Tesla=everything (ok, almost)

I know the new Service Manager, who had 15 years experience with Lexus (service tech, then service writer, finally service manager) who is making the leap to TM. I actually recommended him to the HR folks and Jerome (wrote them a letter). He will be an incredible asset to the organization. I plan to make the trek from the East Bay to Palo Alto when I need service.

I got an email from Tesla saying the Model X design prototype will be at the Palo Alto location on Sat 12th, and Sun 13th for their grand opening weekend.

Was also impressed when Palo Alto service called me on Monday informing me they were now open (and Menlo Park was closed) and had received parts for the factory pano roof noise fix. I originally scheduled that fix with Menlo Park, so was cool to see Tesla service taking a proactive role, instead of me calling them.

The new PA SC manager has 15+ years of auto experience first as a service tech, then service writer, then service manager at a Bay Area Lexus dealership. I wrote a recommendation for him to TM HR and Jerome (and he got a personal interview with Jerome for the position). He will really be great for the (high profile) SC near the corp offices.

Pics of the grand opening this weekend, including showcase of the Model X prototype. Some people wondered if it's a new one, but no, still the only one around (they repainted it white) that has been traveling all over the world.

And yes, at this Palo Alto location is a showroom/sales office and a service center.

They seem to like listing stores as being open prematurely.

Both Montreal and Vancouver are listed as open but are little more than rented offices. (This is the case for Vancouver anyway)

The clue is the hours being listed as "by appointment only". You see that, means no actual store.

I had the opportunity to stop by the Corte Madera Sales Center today, which is located in the Village shopping mall off of highway 101 in Marin. The center is currently a very small storefront, with no room for a car or chassis. They do plan to move to another location in the mall with more room.

They have been working on getting charging infrastructure set up since before Thanksgiving, but there have been delays. They have had to drive demo/test drive vehicles from the San Rafael service center over to Corte Madera in the morning, then back to San Rafael at night to be recharged). There are now 6 HPWC set up on stanchions along the back side of the Village mall (on the frontage road next to highway 101). When I was there I chatted with the malls general contractor, who was waiting for the local building inspector to sign off on the work. He anticipated that the HPWC would go live in 3 or 4 days. There will be 1 handicapped space. Still awaiting appropriate pavement marking and signage. Not sure if there will be cones to block spaces.

Note that on the back of each HPWC there is an individual red disconnect switch. You might need to throw this switch to be able to charge.

Before you plan on parking or charging there, best to call the sales center to ask permission and see if you can leave your S while you shop (maybe leave your cell phone and keep your Tesla smartphone app open).

FYI-the 6 new HPWCs at the Corte Madera location are not all wired up/set up for full 80A service. The ones to the left are more like 40-50A, and the ones to the right more like 70-80A. They are awaiting an electrician to fix the problem.

Hello everyone. Here's an update for you all regarding a new store: a Tesla gallery is coming Westfield Galleria at Roseville in Roseville, CA. It's going in a currently unbuilt space next to the mall's new Lululemon Athletica store. I can't guarantee when it will be open (a Foot Locker store was on the mall's lease plan for well over a year before construction commenced), but considering the superchargers going into the mall's parking lot i'd expect it to open before the holidays. I've heard inklings of a gallery opening at the Stoneridge Shopping Center in Pleasanton as well, as the mall will be undergoing some store shuffling and an expansion to make room for several new tenants in the near future.

At the Bethesda store every time I walked by there was no one there. Had to go to the back and get the guy, whom was on the computer to ask him about a shirt.

Also talked to a potential customer a bit about the company because he looked like he was looking for someone to ask questions. He was from the UK and will be here for 3 days. He was wondering when they would be selling them in the UK. He wants to get one. I told him from my understanding right hand drive is to be shipping within 6 months to Europe. (Didn't want to over promise ;) he was also asking about the company. He thought they were made by Toyota. And wanted to know where they were made.

I think the computer should be on a pedestal out near the entrance so the sales rep can be easily accessed and be attentive to everyone walking into the store.

Seriously - the Tesla rep in the store (Brody maybe?) would have no idea which one of us wrote that post. I was there today too (in my Gray) and had to walk to the back to ask about a shirt. I was there for at least 2-3 minutes checking out the Black P85 on the floor before I went back there. I also talked to a potential customer, but about supercharging and range (typical).

Stopped by the Pasadena, Ca storefront this morning, cause I noticed a "notice" posted in the window. Letter dated June 4th, bunch of legalese from the city, but basically the "tenant" (Tesla Motors) will be making some improvements to the property. Presumably building the store . Previously the place was entirely empty, but now there is some construction equipment in the back. But major construction has not yet started.

Also noticed on the light pole next to where I parked that AT&T is installing a Wi-Fi network to cover Old Town. Putting gear up on the tops of the streetlamps.

Tesla will be opening an official store in Montreal. The store location will be 5350 Ferrier street in Cte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grce, which is one street over from the Orange Julep.

According the report, Tesla will dump a million dollars into renovating the building which means itll be at least until the end of 2014 but likely beginning of 2015 until it opens its doors. The building used to be occupied by Chrysler and Infiniti dealers and has numerous service bays and a showroom.

Quebec makes a natural market for the electric car maker given we are powered by Hydro-Quebec. There are already over 250 Tesla Model S cars on Quebec roads which retail starting at around $70,000.

Tesla is about to launch the much-awaited Model X SUV and after that an affordable $35,000 $40,000 electric vehicle.

Just got an e-mail from Tesla. The Pasadena store Grand Opening is on August 29th, here is the scoop:

    TeslaPasadena.jpg

    - - - Updated - - -

The initial permit said no test drives. My discussions with the employees indicated that there will be test drives. I went down the alley behind the store the other day and there are no parking spaces directly behind the store. A couple stores down there are two spaces, both on a severe incline, very space constrained. There was no sign of construction of any kind of charging infrastructure there then, so not clear where the test drive cars will be. About 80' down the alley heading West there is a public parking lot. Maybe Tesla will lease a couple spaces there for the test drive vehicles? I'll report back when I find out what the plan is. There is no way the test drive vehicles reside in the actual store. Not possible.

I swung through the alley behind the store today. It looks like I was right about the test drive vehicles being parked in a nearby public parking lot. They had 3-4 spaces coned off, and they had what looked to be bases for chargers of some kind. No wiring hooked up yet, which seems odd given the store opening in 4 days. I'll shoot some pics tomorrow morning on the way in to work and post them here. This parking lot would be an awfully nice place to put several fast chargers, even for shoppers just visiting Old Town. Wouldn't surprise me if Tesla did put in a Supercharger location here.

Here is the area: The Tesla Store is the "A". The parking lot is to the left of the "Paper Source" store. The spaces being turned into chargers are the ones in the upper right hand corner. View is looking East. When you exit that lot the lower street is Pasadena Av, which will get you very quickly onto the 210 W freeway.

Well, didn't take them long to install the first charger in the parking lot. The pictures should be self explanatory. The alley is the way from the store to the test drive vehicles. The door shown last is the back entrance. Looks like there will be two HPWC's for the test drive vehicles. The sign in the front window just says the grand opening is 8-29-14. Kind of interesting that the spaces are so wide for just two cars. Maybe to give them plenty of room for letting customers go around the cars while the other one is pulling in/out and doing the same inspections. There is a white Model S in the background.

  • Jun 4, 2015

I do second this question since I am also very very interested in the Model S (actually even more interested in the Model X, cost permits) but with no local support the courage to buy Tesla has to be enormous, I know at least 3 Model s owners in Portugal that had their cars towed, either to Tilburg or to Aix-en-Provence for service... Quite a ride.
So, back to basics, rdias' question: any info on a Tesla store / service center to be opened in Portugal? How about Spain? Any info is welcomed.

    Tesla Shenzhen China

I'm in China on business and thought I would stop by the Tesla showroom.
The showroom is nice and they did their homework when developing it.
The location isn't prime but it's good, located in an auto type mall with most of the
other major import brands. It was Sunday afternoon and they were busy. It looked like
there were at least a couple of serious deals in the works and I got the impression they
had sold about fifty cars for the Month.

A few things I learned that some of you may already know.
Back seats in the model S aren't allowed, dual chargers aren't allowed because they apparently
aren't considered safe, delivery time is three months, price for a model S is about 900,000 rmb ($145,000),
price isn't the biggest factor as most imports are pricey, the major challenge is charging because everyone
lives in highrise apartments. If you are a factory or building owner it's not a big deal but for everyone else buying a parking space or garage is out of the question. For now, it's probably not a major issue but to get to the masses Tesla will have to address the charging issue.

All in all I would say they were are on the right track. One area they are missing in sales and brand awareness is their clothing (Elon are you listening) There needs to be a much larger selection of clothing and accessories similiar to what Harley Davidson has done. The Chinese are all about show and anyone that spends $150K on a car wants their friends to know it not only when they are driving but in the office too. Every showroom needs a Tshirt with the location on it such as the HardRock brand has done (Tesla Shenzhen, Tesla Frankfurt, etc).

China is a huge market and the timing is right but its going to be a long haul and require some creative ideas, all of which Tesla is good at. I would post some pics but the connection here is terrible. Maybe later.

Looks like another first class property. Thanks for the report and photos.

The apparel suggestions sound like a good way for Tesla to make money and spread brand awareness at the same time. It is like media paying you to run your ad! I hope Tesla has the bandwidth to act on these suggestions.

Do Chinese people like to show off? Yes. Do they usually do that by wearing clothes with big logos of a certain organization? Absolutely no. People doing that will be viewed as either a weirdo or a salesperson for that organization in China. We make jokes about college students in US wearing all kinds of apparel with the university's name/logo on them.

I don't see anything wrong in wearing an apparel with their university logo, no different from that of your favorite sports team.

But I agree with you on companies. I don't see why anyone would go and pay money to buy a Pepsi branded jacket. It does sound silly. But most of those are generally given free to employees and in trade shows.

But Tesla is different. At least in the U.S. It sends a message that time has come to kick the oil addiction. I bought a Tesla sweatshirt, the first time I ever bought one just for the company logo.

I don't expect that level of moral support for Elon's goals in China.

It's simply cultural difference. Unless during an organized event, we Chinese don't wear clothes with big logos on them, be the logo your university or some company. It is just not what we do. I personally bought a hat, a jacket, a mug, and a lunchbox from Tesla Motors and wear/use them almost everyday. My Chinese friends, who already know I'm a big fan of the company, still laughed at me (in a friendly manner) when they first see me wearing the jacket and the hat.

Agree, and it is not only the Chinese though. In college (UC Berkeley), almost all the students from Asia and Oceania thought it was a strange American cultural trait for the student of said school to be walking around with sweaters and t-shirts of the school they were attending. I seem to recall that the European students felt the same way as well...don't think you'll see many students with "Oxford" or "Cambridge" sweatshirts walking around at those institutions.

It's a funny juxtaposition, or maybe it's a reaction, because most of them went to schools that require uniforms, while most US schools don't.

That could be the reason. We are suppose to wear the same uniform in elementary school, junior high, and senior high school. And as soon as we're in college, nobody's wearing clothes with big logos of the college unless in an event.

That's a surreal regulation. Dual chargers are of course perfectly safe, though I doubt there are any charging stations in China which can use them. (Most charging stations which want dual chargers are in Canada.)

It appears that Tesla is following up on Elon's comment about further cultivating sales in Northeast - there are two new stores/galleries in New Jersey: one in Princeton and another in Cherry Hill. Both locations on the Teslamotors.com are listed without an address, just with a telephone No. and sales hours "By appointment only". Is anybody familiar with these stores? It seems that they are newly opened, but it is strange that they operate "By Appointment Only".

There is a similar one in Hamilton NY, which seems an odd location. It too is listed by appointment only, and the phone number is a NYC area code, not Hamilton.

Hamilton seems odd for Central NY, really should be Syracuse or even Binghamton. Are there state regulatory issues? My thought was that if there are, maybe for certain states Tesla should consider opening stores/service centers at Indian reservations (kind of like the Casinos). EG--Foxwoods in CT.

I think the current deal with NY is they can't open more than 5 stores, not sure if "galleries" are treated differently or what they are allowed to do.

Wow that bites, central NY really needs its own service area. Too large an area (geographically) to under serve. Yes population is less, but distances and the winters are long. Winters are bad for cars. Spent many a winters there in my youth. Could also provide service for central/northern PA along the 81 corridor. Similar rules in PA? Maybe Scranton or Wilkes-Barre... just speculating. Good Luck!

Yes, a centrally located store/gallery/service center could handle Syracuse, Rochester, Binghamton, etc. Cortland might be a good location, right off 81, or maybe Auburn or Seneca Falls to get it closer to Rochester. Not that those locations being within about half an hour from me has any influence on my choices...

Another indication that what Elon mentioned during the ER - cultivation of demand in New York - is not part of some future planning, but is actually unfolding contemporaneously: Tesla signed a lease for about 40,000 square feet of store and service center space in Brooklyn, NY. This will be second largest Store/SC in NA (after Montreal):

I was wondering if you central NY folks could petition Tesla to build a service center up there? Get a bunch of names, etc... Also do you think they may consider doing a Franchise service center (not a dealership) idea if they hit their 5 store ceiling in NY? May be semantics (Franchise vs. Dealer), but if it allows more service centers to be built...

I thought I remembered new york as one of those settlement states that tesla was limited to five dealerships (if i am wrong stop reading now). I understand your talking about service center but if you only have 5 dealerships, you would want to put service centers near those and so new york officials are to blame since you would concentrate on high density areas with higher density of population and support those with service centers.
  • Feb 29, 2016

Yes, 5 store limitation, and they are all in the NYC area, leaving the rest of NY as a Tesla wasteland from Albany to Buffalo.

So here's my question. I recall there is an Indian reservation outside of Syracuse (Onandaga?). Technically Indian reservations are their own government/entity, at least so I was taught when working at the Navajo Nation. Thus couldn't Tesla put a service center there and technically NOT violate NY state law? Basically like the casinos (Foxwood, etc...). I know it's not good PR, but you guys need it.

Actually I think it's a great idea. Don't know how the law works in that case though. On the other hand, are service centers under the same restrictions as stores? I thought "service centers" and "galleries" were different entities and treated differently than stores.

Yes. We really should do this because it's ridiculous that they haven't even got a service center on the drawing board. There seem to be no legal restrictions on service centers.

They couldn't put a store in, however, due to the legal restrictions. Which honestly is OK with me; ordering online is great, and we've got plenty of people who will offer test drives to would-be customers. In NY, "dealer" licenses and "repair shop" licenses are *completely independent*. (Look on the wall: if a dealer in NY offers service, he has two separate metal plaques on the wall giving his *separate* license numbers as a dealer and as a repair shop.)

Syracuse is the most centrally located place you can get in upstate NY and should probably be the priority. It would be a plausible drive from Buffalo or from most of the North Country or from most of the Southern Tier. It's the furthest point from the state borders and therefore the most important point to have an *in-state* service center.

Albany/Schenectady/Troy would also be a desirable location... could always cross the border to Bennington VT or Pittsfield MA nstead, though.

There are only two Tesla service centers in the entire state of NY at the moment. Long Island and Westchester.

Musk has said that the Northeastern market is "underpenetrated":
Tesla highlights winter driving with the Model S as Northeast remains an market [Videos] | Electrek

Well, DUH, that's 'cause Tesla doesn't have any service centers outside Boston, NYC, and Philly. You have to build service centers. Nobody wants to drive 200+ miles in the snow to get their car serviced. Does Musk understand *why* he isn't selling many cars in the Northeast? It's the lack of service centers.

It's the east/west coast fallacy: there's really nothing in between, I swear.

I think some of Tesla's execs (if not Elon) should take driving tours of more of the hinterland regions of the US. That would really open some eyes at how incredibly BIG and beautiful this country is (that's how I learned). They'd really be able to see it especially with Autopilot, which I never had criss-crossing the US. And how more service centers are needed, or potentially out-sourced.

Funny thing is that one of the comments exactly replicates what you said!

I totally agree with this. Tesla needs to add more service centers if they plan on getting any penetration. I don't consider the loss of range due to cold weather to be a big deal. Tesla's have plenty of range to begin with so the reduction is not an issue. Plus we know that the Model S handles well in the snow. So get moving Elon and add some service centers in the "under-penetrated" areas. Heck, for me even Rochester will do in the short run. An hour drive is not unreasonable. Three hours is outrageous, even on a sunny summer day.
