Model X Founder Series - Facts part 1

The 21" wheels shown at the event appear to have been swapped out for normal 22" wheels since then. Reference the following two photos:

So this begs the question did any of the cars we saw at the reveal have 20 or 22's, or did they all have 21's.
  • Oct 13, 2015
    andrewket
I'm going to be looking at 19's or 20's. I'm not going through another 4 tires in 18 months like I did with my first S. I really hope Tesla offers smaller wheel sizes as a factory option.
  • Oct 13, 2015
    AnOutsider
Or he chose his own wheels since he does R&D on his own car. It's not like my sticker changed when I swapped wheels on my car.
  • Oct 13, 2015
    goneskiian
Not in dark gray they didn't.

From what it looked like to me, they all did. Except Elon's black on black combo. This is just based on looks from afar though. Just looking at the dark wheels on Elon's X, they looked to be a smaller diameter. Could this have been an optical illusion? Sure. I doubt it though. Look at the videos from the press test drives ealier in the day and you can see the difference too.

    - - - Updated - - -

Thanks for that. I hadn't seen the second picture. It sure looks like they did. Unless that's another black X and not really Elon's. Easier explanation is swapped wheels though. ;-)

    - - - Updated - - -

There's more discussion of Elon's 21" X wheels and ultra high performance tires here...

For those of you buying sigs a model might be coming later...

TEG, do you remember how many Model S Founders series vehicles have been build in advance to the Model S Signature series vehicles?
Might be we see a comparable set of Model X Founders series vehicles build in advance of Model X Signature series vehicles.
    Thank's in advance!
  • Oct 14, 2015
    Longhorn92
I think I remember a number like 17 for the Model Ses.
  • Oct 14, 2015
    ev-enthusiast
So is my assumption correct that we do have to wait for the delivery of these Model X Founders series vehicles in advance of the Signature series vehicles?
  • Oct 14, 2015
    Longhorn92
Yes, I believe that is correct: Founders, Sigs, then General Production
  • Oct 14, 2015
    aznt1217
Yes it is correct. It's a manufacturing tuning process too. Because these cars are fully loaded it's far simpler for Tesla to produce logistically by keeping minimal customization. It also serves as a test run for all the options for the car for fine tuning for "not as fully featured" Sigs, and then General production.
  • Oct 14, 2015
    Gzrgmr
The Titanium Founder car at the event had 20 inch rims.
  • Oct 14, 2015
    ev-enthusiast
And there might be even some test drive vehicles included in the current production batch.
I heard that next month there should be e.g. one Model X available at the Santana Row store.

Thanks for responding. I know about Roadster Founders' cars, but not Model S...
  • Oct 15, 2015
    gimp_dad
This is not correct. I've been told the actual number was 42, not 27. I own a Model S Founders series that is higher than 27.
  • Oct 15, 2015
    TheAccuser
Can we assume a "fully loaded" Founders Model X includes Ludicrous mode?
  • Oct 15, 2015
    andrewket
All the founder's cars at the reveal were L. I would assume fully loaded includes L.
  • Oct 15, 2015
    TheAccuser
    I hope so. I just hit my 10th Model S referral. :)
  • Oct 16, 2015
    JEU
And what do they mean by "base price Model X", P90D or 90D +5k?
  • Oct 16, 2015
    TheAccuser
I fully expect to pay the absolute base price of the 90D and get a fully loaded Founders P90D. Although the price difference is more than the $25K appx discount they mention on the referral page.
  • Nov 25, 2015
    JEU
    So, only two wheel options?
  • Nov 25, 2015
    AnOutsider
Are there any physical badges? Or just the ones on the screens?
  • Nov 25, 2015
    JEU
Both, my DS told me there was on the back and on the side blinkers. Guess its the same as signature.
  • Nov 26, 2015
    fiksegts
badges don't make a car exclusive.... I guess the signature red color option is the only difference, would be cool if they had a 'foudners' color as well...
  • Nov 26, 2015
    dadaleus
Is there a disadvantage to the tow hitch? I figured the only reason not to do it was cost, but we get it for free.
  • Nov 26, 2015
    Marcus Adolfsson
I have been trying to find a picture of what it looks like when the hitch is removed. I found a picture of the cover for the accessory hitch, but not sure if the 2" hitch cover looks the same.

anybody else unable to configure or am I the only being told tomorrow day after day? I only had 11
referrals maybe they are taking highest number of referrals first?
  • Nov 26, 2015
    AnOutsider
ah right, the S had stenciling on the back accent plate and the side markers. I was thinking more like P90D type badging.
  • Nov 26, 2015
    Marcus Adolfsson
They have not replaced my Signature configuration with the Founders one yet.
  • Nov 26, 2015
    andrewket
At the moment my config includes the tow hitch because the receiver is removable. It does not appear the accessory hitch is removable. I'd prefer to not see it when not in use.

Where did you see a reference or picture to a cover for the accessory hitch?
  • Nov 26, 2015
    Marcus Adolfsson
In this thread. Picture of accessory hitch 1.25 - Page 2
  • Nov 26, 2015
    andrewket
Thanks for the link. I missed that thread. The fact that there is a cover for the accessory hitch puts it back into consideration. But since the tow package is a no additional cost item on the founder's series I'm still leaning that way. If I was buying a production car I'd get the accessory hitch.

  • Nov 27, 2015
    bonnie
I am able to configure - but as part of that, they transferred a general production $5k deposit over to the Founders. Is it possible they might still need to talk to you re: deposit? Or have you done the same?
  • Nov 27, 2015
    Marcus Adolfsson
Bonnie does your My Tesla show the proper Founders Edition pricing etc? First they enabled configuration of my production reservation (in the 13k range), then deleted that order and added a Signature configuration, and then finally called on Wednesday and said they were going to cancel the Signature order and add a Founder configurator (still waiting).
  • Nov 27, 2015
    bonnie
I was told to just ignore the pricing. But it does show as a Founders on my configurator. I don't expect to see the pricing sheets redone just for a nominal amount of reservations.

  • Nov 27, 2015

Thanks! Neither did I but my sales rep implied earlier in the week that pricing would be updated. I just double checked and while it shows as a Signature model on the dashboard, once you click into the configuration it shows as Founders (same as yours). I am sure the MVP will be correct.

Ignore the pricing. Tesla is going to override it to make it 115.5k no matter what you pick.

On your main my tesla screen it will show "signature series", but when you enter the design took it should show "founder".

It took 3 tries to get it right.

FWIW, I spoke to Tesla a bit ago. After your order is confirmed they will be manually editing the MVPA to reflect the fixed price. I inquired about delivery timing, and was told to expect January. Previously the guidance had been possibly end of December, or early January. So a small, albeit not surprising at all, change.

At this rate, from a timing perspective, the founder's isn't going to reduce my delivery time compared to my early production sequence. Well, that may not be true. We would have likely gone for a 90D instead of the P. So never mind.

Spoke with my delivery specialists and he says "Founder by Referral" (FbR) Model Xes will be delivered after all Signatures and right before general production. I don't have a VIN and don't think and FbR Xes will get one for quite some time. I asked him to guess when that might be and he said Q12016 FWIW.

    - - - Updated - - -

You know the white seats are not leather. Pleather. My wife loved the color, but not downgrading to pleather.
  • Dec 9, 2015
    aija SigX 649
    - - - Updated - - -

That would be the fair and amicable thing to do. One could make an argument that they should be interspersed with general production based on sequence number, but if they are building 100/wk at that point, it wouldn't much matter. Hope it's true!
  • Dec 9, 2015
    andrewket
I agree, delivery after the sigs in each region is fair. It would just be nice - the usual complaint - if tesla would be consistent with the messaging. I was originally told end of Dec was possible, otherwise early Jan. I sincerely doubt all sigs will be delivered by the end of Dec, or early Jan. It would be great to be wrong.
  • Dec 9, 2015
    bonnie
Since (imo) it's nicer than leather, I don't see it as a downgrade. It's like a really fine lambskin, but easier to clean. "Pleather", on the other hand, is that hard plasticky stuff. THAT would be unacceptable.

    - - - Updated - - -

For what it's worth, that's the messaging I've heard from the beginning. But everyone was so excited over the few that heard differently, it kind of got lost in the noise.

I have't even configured yet. We have six months to configure (if you haven't already). I'm going to thoroughly check out Sig 2 and then confirm Founders after that.

    - - - Updated - - -

I'm sure they want to finish up Founders along with Sigs - so they can shut down the Sig Red paint and focus on production.
  • Dec 9, 2015
    aija SigX 649
Valid point. Someone else mentioned here that their DS said that the delivery order will be (1) Founders, (2) Signatures, (3) FbR (Founders by Referral), (4) General Production. Not sure where reservation holders outside of the US would fall on this list however.

  • Dec 12, 2015
    andrewket
There isn't a price list for the founder's edition. The car costs 115.5k, regardless of options. Which is why even though I want the 20's, I thought about ordering 22's and then selling them. But in the end I decided it wasn't worth the hassle, especially since the availability of the 20's as an accessory in January was questionable at best. The 22's come with summer performance tires. Not the best to take delivery with in the middle of winter.
  • Dec 12, 2015
    aija SigX 649
Are you certain the 22s come standard with summer performance tires on the X? I asked my service center a couple of weeks ago for exact specs and have yet to hear back from them. Taking delivery beginning of winter is a major concern! Please share specs if you have some insights.
  • Dec 12, 2015
    andrewket
I'm looking for a reference, but these are the tires on the 22" founder's cars delivered thus far:

    Scorpion™ Zero™ | Summer SUV Tires | Pirelli

It's confusing, because it's tagged as a summer tire but then in the description it says all season. I haven't looked for a tire rack review yet. Going to do that now.

So here is what tirerack says:

Derived from Pirelli's legendary P Zero performance tires, the Scorpion Zero is a Street/Sport Truck All-Season tire for sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks. The Scorpion Zero was designed to provide year round traction and handling for drivers who operate their light truck vehicles primarily on-road in various weather conditions, including very occasional light snow.

Depending on tire size, the Scorpion Zero radial's tread compound is molded into a single Z or double Z (two rows of Z-shaped tread blocks situated side-by-side) intermediate tread blocks to provide responsive steering, along with enhanced cornering and braking capability. Lateral grooves and wide circumferential grooves provide water evacuation to resist hydroplaning and enhance wet weather traction. Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires combine high-speed precision with low noise levels.

    ---

So it appears to be an all-season, with the caveat that it's best for light occasional snow. I don't know what tire the 20's come with, so I can't compare. I had a terrible experience with the 21's on my S, and have been much happier with 19's, so I figured I'd try to learn from that experience and go with the smaller wheel and the larger profile tire on the X. YMMV. In fact it's possible Tesla is using the same tire for both sizes...

Looks like we need a closer up picture than the one I took. I'll look at the pics I took at the unveiling. I'm not sure I thought about the tires that night :/

Also, I'm starting to think we need a new thread. This is applicable to everyone, not just F cars. Do we have a mod here who could split these posts to a new thread ... Subject something along the lines of "Performance of MX OEM tires"?

Anyone care to hazard a guess why the dark wheels aren't an option for the founders cars. I ** really ** want dark on mine. Wonder if Tesla will let me swap them at delivery time, with zero miles on them?

From Mark T's Founder's VIN3, the tread pattern appears to be Asimmetrico!

Well that's good news. :) My SigX still says 'confirmed', but I'm taking delivery this weekend.

Funny, I had the same thing show up yesterday - the page looked different. Then when I went back into mytesla, the page I'm familiar with reappeared and it still says "Your Model X order has been confirmed", and that's what it's saying now.
