Pollux @Pollux - so psyched you're in this area - I was very inspired by your perfect Tesla raffle, and would love to know if you and your better half (or better 3rd if your Tesla is now "family") have similar plans to get involved in MD lobbying[/QUOTE]
Hi, @CatB! Thanks for the kind words!
Jessica has been invited to sit on a Citizens' Climate Lobby board -- CCL is a national carbon pricing lobbying organization. Jessica is also thinking about how she can be involved in other state-level efforts (she continues to be engaged in MA via Climate XChange); she has been approached by an MD legislator and a CT legislator for thoughts about how to file state-level legislation there, as well as how to get the relevant economic modeling studies done that can be used to support such legislation. Do you have any suggestions?
As for another raffle... well... CXC is looking at doing another one (I'm advising them)... and I may have something a little more spectacular in mind for another, much larger organization...

Joules Verne I was volunteering at a wiffle ball fundraiser that a friend of mine runs in honor of his deceased son. As the event entered the finals and the competing teams dwindled, we had some time to escape, and I showed him my MS for the first time. I walked him through the features, praised Elon, then finally took him for a quick ride. Launch! Tesla Grins and giggles. We had to get back to the event, and when parking, he said you have to show my daughter. He ran and got her. Launch! Grins. She said it reminded her of the Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster at Cedar Point amusement park. You have to show my boyfriend! She ran and got him. Launch! Grins! You have to show my friends... Before I knew it a line was forming. I was launching and producing grins. A dirty job, but somebody had to do it
I asked them if they wanted to see the engine. One of the guys said, "yes, it must be amazing". I popped the hood. Gasp! Where is it!? Amazement. Disbelief. Wonder.
This is a croud that is not very familiar with Tesla, and only knew EVs to be weird econo-mobiles.
Their eyes were opened that day.

Pollux Hey, @Half! One of these late nights, I'll join the DC group as you say. As for Italy... until recently, my wife and kids and I tried to spend some time in the summer in the Lakes District there, but one of the kid's needs intervened. I had been hoping to find Tesla owners north of Milano to hang out with, but didn't succeed. Maybe when we're over there next summer, it'll be a different story.
Hey... look for some email from me in a moment...

Pollux I love these stories from @joules & @CraZ8 and everyone else who puts people into the car.... minds can be changed, one at a time. If I can, I'll put people behind the wheel and have them take it for a spin. What's insurance for, anyway?! Although depending on the person, I'll also take a photograph of their license.
The guy who came out to check for utilities conflicts (digging a trench from the house to the garage to lay a charging circuit), the electricians, the painters, the utilities guys (Pepco?) in a McDonald's parking lot on Wisconsin Avenue... it seems to me that if you look at people as if you are feeling friendly towards them, a lot of people are interested in this cool Tesla electric car...

Pollux Apologies if I'm reposting... memory fading as I age... this was a recent, highly unusual Tesla moment for me...
There was a large, orange cat in the frunk of my '13 P85+...
![]()
A perfectly good reason, of course: the cat was moving from Massachusetts to Maryland. For most of the journey, the cat lounged in his own dedicated car, a perfectly good '12 Prius v wagon. However, from time to time, his car would rendezvous with my Tesla, for some special, high-quality, alone-time. Note below that the frunk lid appears to be slightly ajar; now you know why.
![]()
The next picture makes clear what the cat was (hopefully) doing during his very own rest stops while the Tesla charged...
![]()
Yes, that's right... I believe I've invented the first Tesla feline port-a-potty... I'm honestly not sure whether to be proud or ashamed of what I've done...

mikeash I used autopark with a perpendicular space yesterday. As the car was lining up, I notice a couple walking down the lane, and since autopark isn't entirely quick, I thought they'd have to wait for me. As I was trying to decide if I should pause the sequence and wave them behind me, I realized that the guy is bug-eyed and pointing out my car to his lady. I gave them a big smile and a two-handed wave as the car was maneuvering into the spot, then two thumbs up after he crossed in front. The guy looked like I had just made his week.
Incidentally, after we came to a stop, we realized we barely had room to open the doors and exit the car. Perpendicular autopark is willing to park in tighter spaces than I would!

Boourns Dropping off some stuff at Goodwill on Saturday (paraphrasing):
Guy 1: "Whoa that guy has a trunk in the front!"
Guy 2: "Man, that's one of those electric cars. A Tesla."
1: "What? It's electric?"
I then had them both come over and look. Showed them the frunk, told them the motor is actually in the back, and then blew their mind by opening the hatch. Then the onslaught of usual questions, including whether I had ever "topped it out." I said I hadn't, but it was limited to about 130, had more than 350hp, and could get to 60 in about 5 seconds.
Then Guy 2 went on for nearly a minute about how awesome the car was and how we have to protect the environment, etc. It made both our days.

Joules Verne Speaking of Summon.
Forgot to mention, as I was demoing the car to everybody that approached me at the wiffle ball tourney, I just had to show off summon. Now with a curious group around me, I said, watch this. Pulled out my iPhone, fired-up the app, and had the car come to me.
JAWS. HIT. THE. GROUND.
Not sure what impressed them more, the launch or the fact I can control its movement WITH MY PHONE.
Would have used the fob, but that doesn't seem to work for me anymore.
Jul 25, 2016
Max* I've been having issues with the fob too. After an update, I had to disable/re-enable summon from the car and it started working better, and then got buggy again.

wdolson We lost our 21 year old cat 2 weeks after getting my Model S in June. It was tough, but we just got a kitten yesterday. It's been a long time since I've had a young cat and this one is like an 8 year old who just ate half a birthday cake. She's super friendly, but when she isn't trying to commune with us she's playing hard, sometimes both at once.
She did get an longer than expected ride in the car on the way home, traffic was bad through Portland. I took advantage of the ability to run the A/C with the car unattended. We stopped at the Woodburn supercharger for an opportunity charge while we grabbed something to go at Panera. My SO was concerned about the cat overheating despite the A/C running full blast. The car was down to 67F by the time we got back and the kitten seemed quite happy with the situation. She seemed quite content with the car, she only made a few mews and mostly slept on the way home.
I like the frunk catbox idea. If I ever need to transport a cat any distance, I'm stealing it.

Jul 30, 2016
wilheldp I've had my Model S for a little over 2 weeks now. I've had several moments that I expected since a lot of my friends knew I was getting the car and I knew they would want rides and ask lots of questions. But I have had 2 unexpected moments.
The first occurred yesterday. I have to have the car inspected by the Sheriff's office in order to get it titled in Kentucky. I pull up to the office, hand the deputy my paperwork, and he asked me for the odometer reading. It took me a minute to find the odometer, but when I found it, I told him it was 297 miles. He mumbled something about it being an easy inspection since below a certain mileage, they don't even have to inspect the car (but still require $5 to fill out paperwork). When he brings the paperwork back, he says "this car ain't got no motor?!?". Apparently, where it says the type of engine on the MCO, it says that it is a 0 cylinder-Electric. I say "it has 2 motors, but no engine." Him: "So it's all electric?!?" I proceed to have the standard, 10-minute Tesla talk about range, charging, etc. I knew that would happen a lot, but I wasn't expecting it at the Sheriff's inspection office.
The second was this afternoon. I walk out of the golf course to leave. When I approach my car, I see a Mazda SUV slow-rolling past my car, with the driver and passenger's heads staring at my car. I walk up and get in, and before I can close the door, the Mazda is in reverse, heading back my way. They roll down their window, and so do I. The driver asks "is it as awesome as they say it is?" Me: "Yep....sure is!" Him: "We're saving up...hopefully order one next year." Me: "you'll love it."

Beryl Sunday, a senior woman (well over 70) at church asked me how I liked my car and then went on to tell me that the recent crashes are due to drivers not mis-using autopilot. She then went on to tell me that there are so many more accidents in other vehicles and how people are making much ado about nothing. She finished her talk reminding me to keep my hands on the steering wheel.
Made me laugh.

hsctiger93 This one's a little creepy...
At the Glen Allen Supercharger just getting 100 miles of range to complete some baseball travel with the kids and a woman in an ICE with her passenger and dog pulled up in the spaces opposite the SC spaces and just stared at me for the 15 minutes or so I used the SC. MorrisonHiker We drove back to Colorado from Reno over the weekend. Yesterday, while in Utah, a large black diesel pick-up truck drove next to us for several seconds and then floored it, trying to make as much noise as possible. Drik Solutions asked me "Did he just..." and I replied, "Yeah, I think so." Obviously, he was trying to "roll coal" and show us how much respect he has for Teslas. I don't get it.
I did happen to read this article when I got home so I guess rolling coal is popular with many in Utah and elsewhere.

RogerHScott I'm fairly sure I experienced virtually the same thing a couple of weeks ago -- definitely a pickup, don't recall the color or whether it was diesel.
My understanding is that, contrary to most people's intuition, the more visible most pollution is the less its environmental impact, because in order to be visible it must consist of relatively large particles that will quickly settle out of the atmosphere. It is the invisible gasses that are really bad. Still dirty, of course, but not as bad as spewing invisible nitrogen oxides.

wdolson Last Tuesday we pulled into the Woodburn SC south of Portland and there was a Jeep Icing one of the stalls. As I backed in I explained Icing to my SO and what a jerk the guy was. When I got out I saw he was sleeping in there, I thought of confronting him, but decided it wasn't the mole hill I wanted to die on. He was in a shady spot, but there was a spot just as shady one over from the SC.
We got some take out and he left before we got back.
I had a more positive Tesla Moment on Sunday. We were on SR-14 in Washington. I had just got on at 164th when a black P85 zipped in front of me and proceeded into the exit only lane for the next exit (192nd). As I passed him he was looking intently at my car and I waved. Guy : A TESLA! One of those electric cars?
Me : Yes
Guy : Thats is sweeet, man oh man that is a sweeeet car
Me : Thank you! It is pretty nice
Moment #2
Lady : Your car is so pretty and so quite, all I heard was your tires
Me : She is pretty nice, thank you so much
Moment #3
Leaving a restaurant with my family and heading back to the car (Sister, her husband and my father)
My Father : I'll ride in the Tesla
I'll pull out my phone and summon the car
My Sister : What? Wow! Dad look it's driving itself!
Sister's Husband : Smiles and rushes to take out his phone as I summon the car, he fumbles it as he tries to not look away to not miss a moment "Do it again, Do it again"
Father : Wow I'm definitely driving in the Tesla with my son!
...And thats when I realized the car was worth every single penny

HankLloydRight Very similar event happened to me at the Auburn Mall, MA supercharger. At night. Everything closed down. Nobody anywhere else around. Very creepy to begin with. I'm sitting there charging, and a small white beater of a car, like a Toyota Tercel type car drove up perpendicular and about 10-15 feet in front of me, and the driver (female) and passenger (male) just stood there, looking at me and the car and the SCs. For between 5 and 10 minutes (probably seemed longer than it was). I wasn't sure what they were doing, but it sure felt like they were considering robbing me. But I was sitting there like a dead duck because I was plugged in and couldn't just drive away. I also didn't want to get out of my car. They eventually drove away, but for a few minutes there, it was dicey.

Gwgan A non-moment. Tourist couple in a nicely appointed Buick parked alongside as I was getting my dogs into the back from their walk in the park. My drivers door was set to auto and got in the way of the driver getting out. Rear hatch was wide open. We stand behind the car for a few minutes chatting about our dogs and they ask about the beach. I noticed they didnt even glance around or inside the car. First time messing with the car with people nearby that I was not asked about it. Maybe we could have had a moment if I had opened a FWD. Felt weird.

ajay Um, yeah, whoever was driving that Model X back from the Berkshires, I swear we weren't stalking you. We noticed the (parked) Model X when we were leaving Tanglewood. On the way home, we stopped at a supercharger and saw what turned out to be the same Model X. When I noticed a family heading toward the car, I told our passengers to keep an eye on the car, we might see the falcon doors in action.
We could have greeted the driver with something like "beautiful day for a drive" or "the X looks great!" and not blurted out something like "HeywereyoujustatTanglewoodbecausewesawanXjustlikethis!"
You'd think we'd know better, but apparently not. Sorry, dude.
Aug 2, 2016
HankLloydRight I did not for a second assume they were socially awkward. I assumed they were going to rob me and were just casing the joint to see how secluded it is. Pollux @Hank,
I hear you! You definitely should listen to your instincts!
That said, at that exact same mall, **but during the day** albeit with nobody around, I have had little beat-up cars come and circle around the area, clearly interested in what was going on. In some cases, with scary-looking individuals inside. I've gotten out of my car, approached them, and discovered that the people inside (at least in those cases) were very interested in the Tesla, in its electric nature, in the Superchargers. I suppose if the conversation had begun with and focused on how much the cars cost, and what did I do to be able to afford one, and where was I going and did anyone expect me... but all turned out well.
Again... this was **during the day**. I think I would have been much more cautious at night, as you were.

So, a month ago my wife and I took our new baby on a quick trip to Sheboygan, Wisconsin SuperCharger. It is in the parking lot of a Festival Foods supermarket store. We parked, started charging when wife decides to go into the store to get something. I'm sitting in the drivers seat waiting when after about 10 minutes, all of a sudden, there is this traffic jam right in front of me. One car after another is taking turns to take a picture of the car. (Can't imagine taking a picture of moi) Each car rolls down their window, starts pointing fingers and then out comes the camera. Happened three times in a row. No one got out to talk, no one said anything - just ogle the car. I'm just there smiling and even tried to wave but they were just interested in taking a picture. quantumslip Ok I don't even own a Tesla yet, but I got a Tesla moment while renting a Model S from Turo, surprisingly in Cali in Oceanside (near San Diego). As this was Cali I didn't expect anything since they are so common, but as I was driving by the ocean with windows down and the sunroof open (to take in the breeze and stuff), someone actually shouted to me "Nice Tesla!". I said "Thanks!", as I was shocked and it didn't cross my mind to say it was just a rental until just after.
There was also two guys who noticed the car parked when I went to the Palomar Observatory and started to talk about it. I was going to join in but then they started to talk about the autopilot crashes and how Tesla was "stupid" for only using one sensor
Outside of that I was able to drive some friends around in it (we had all come in from out of town for San Diego Comic-Con), and they were all impressed and amazed by the car and its performance and such.

wilheldp I took my Tesla on its first road trip this past weekend. I didn't have any really big Tesla Moments, other than showing my friends that already knew I had it. But I had several smaller "Moments" like the girl in a car next to me giggling and waving when they passed me and noticed that I didn't have my hands on the wheel and the National Guard weekend warrior that stared at my car when I was driving into a gas station (for coffee) and just smiled and said "Nice Car!" when I got out.

stevem I give my daughter and her friends rides all the time (shuttle them around to where they want to go etc...). I was talking to the mom of one of her friends who owns a Chevy Traverse. Her mom told me this story. The were going up a hill and she pressed harder on the gas and it downshifted to maintain speed up the hill. And my daughter's friend turned to her mom and said "This is SOOOO not Mr. Steve's car"

mikeash Friday, I parked on the National Mall to pick up my daughter from her summer camp. We were leaving on a trip directly afterwards, so I used one of the public J1772 chargers they have there. The first one was ICEd by some jerk SUV with a New Jersey plate (go figure) but the second one was available. Well, almost. The cars on either side were too close, and I couldn't fit into the space. Or so I thought! As I went past, the car put up the little P emblem so I said, well, it knows better than I do, so I let autopark do its thing and I fit perfectly. Cool!
I got out and started fiddling with the station. It's a paid station but not part of any network, so it just takes credit cards. Naturally, the machine is difficult to understand, so it took me a bit to work it all out. Just as I finished, a group of ladies walked up behind me and one of them exclaimed, "Oh no, I forgot to pay for parking! I hope I didn't get a ticket!"
I assured her that you only had to pay to charge, and parking was free. She was relieved, and they were instantly curious about this "charge your car" concept. Quick discussion of range, charging costs, long-distance travel, etc. ensued. Amusing!

NikeWings At work, I've admiringly parked next to a BMW beauty for the last year. Finally met the proud owner today. After the perfunctory 'awesome Tesla Q&A' chat he jumped in his car, revved it a bit, lowered the window and shouted have a great day. But I really didn't hear the great day wishes, because I was actually reading his lips. All I really heard was a put-put, rumble-rumble, put-put, vroom. I flashed him the biggest Tesla grin possible, threw in a royal wave and quietly slipped away. You know the feeling!

Julesp313 Two wee moments this past week...driving home one evening, a chap driving a Miata dashed past me (I was stuck behind a slow Prius again - it's becoming a common thing for me...), then slowed, dropped behind me, dashed past again, pulled in front, stuck his arm out of the window and gave me a thumbs up, which I duly returned. Last night, waiting to turn at a light, a pizza delivery BMW crossed in front of me and did the same thing! Very much a fun part of owning this car

DrGuest I was at the West Yellowstone Super Charger, yesterday when another Model S backed in and plugged in. The next thing I saw was the mother opened the Frunk, laid her baby down inside and did a diaper change. The whole time, another mom in an ICE car, with a baby strapped on her chest, was standing about 30 feet away, with her mouth open. Imagine seeing someone putting their baby in the engine compartment of a car, as though she thought the air filter cover or the 300 degree engine block was the perfect place for the diaper change. The Tesla Mom then casually pulled the baby out of the frunk, handed it to her husband, closed the frunk while the other woman, shook her head in disbelief. Ignorant of the true nature of the frunk, this other mother was totally baffled and almost ready to call Dept. of family services!

GreenEV I operate a limo service in the Niagara area with my Tesla and cross the border almost every day as I go back and forward to Buffalo airport. Many times the border agent is surprised that a Tesla is used for this purpose and sometimes spends a while asking all about the car. Meanwhile the cars lined up behind me must be thinking that the agent is being tough on me! If they only knew!

Boourns Sounds like a story my grandpa would tell me. "When I was a child we didn't have it so easy. My mother would change my diaper on a hot carburator."

brucet999 Pizza delivery BMW? That must be some expensive pizza!

wdolson My SO's ex had a Mercedes coupe and delivered pizzas for a while in between jobs. He worked in a fairly well off part of town and he got some pretty good tips too.

DrGuest My sixteen year old son is in Driver's Education class, and today I was invited to bring my 90D to his class. I spoke for an hour about all the benefits of EV vs. ICE and how supporting Tesla helps support something bigger than all of us, the transition away from fossil fuels. Then I showed the car to the class and soon had 30 teens crawling all over the car and connecting their various Pandora playlists, cranking out the tunes. They thought they were going to see a " 3 wheeled Wonder" and instead I heard a student say, it looks like a Maserati/Jaguar/ Aston Martin all in one! After the students were free to leave class I gave the Driving Instructor a 0-40 MPH launch and he got extremely excited and said he did not expect "full blown roller coaster performance" and could not stop laughing. He told me next semester he will have a couple classes where all 70 students would be in one class and asked If I would come back again to share it with more students. I said yes. I told the students that I named my car "Inspiration", because it is, and they all agreed!

Love love love this. I'll be contacting my local high school drivers Ed dept to do this.

Half Dollar Bill This is a stellar idea! Now if only I can get my hands on a 90D

NikeWings In 10 years, no one will.

msnow Hopefully we will have fully autonomous cars by then and teenagers will be required to use them.
Aug 9, 2016
int32_t As somebody who was recently a teenager I respectfully disagree. Autopilots are helpful and help make things safer, but I like driving myself! Having the option is always nice.
Aug 9, 2016
msnow Yeah but we are talking about the teenagers of the future who never had the opportunity to get drivers education in school.
Aug 10, 2016
Max* As somebody who was a recent teenager (I use the term recent liberally here), I like driving. But looking at the current generation of teenagers (i.e. relatives of mine) - most are not very eager to get driver licenses and/or cars.
If this pattern continues, once full autonomy comes out and becomes mainstream (I would guess a lot more than 10 years), I fully expect the majority of teens of the future to embrace being driven vs. learning to drive.

RogerHScott As the parent of a 17-year-old, I've observed this same trend among my son's peers. I fully acknowledge my dinosaur status and say:
"I don't get it". I'll double down on that curmudgeonliness and say "it's because they've always got their noses in their damn phones so
they have no interest in actually going anywhere or doing anything".[but only sorta]

Aug 10, 2016
Half Dollar Bill Wow! +100 for using a 16 letter, 5 syllable word.
There has to be a syntax deduction in there somewhere for taking a noun, making it an adverb, then making it a noun again. Maybe:
"I'll double down on being a curmudgeon....."

Aug 10, 2016
NikeWings Agree with you MS. As a start, drivers ed will probably be a virtual reality headset before too long. Then we've got GOOG's stated goal of current 10 year olds not needing driver licenses at all.......and perhaps not even wanting one. As a parent, I'll go to the ends of the earth to protect my kids and personally love the transformation despite my affection for America's historic car culture.
Aug 10, 2016
RogerHScott Well, if we're going to be pedantic here, "curmudgeonly", in this context, is an adjective, not an adverb (despite the misleading -ly suffix).
And, since I was referring to a specific instance of being curmudgeonly, the referent of the newly-constructed noun is not quite the same
as the root noun. English, ain't she wonderful?

ggr Today I went to the UTC mall in San Diego, and parked the Roadster just opposite the Tesla area (4 Xs, 4 Ss were there). It was just karma to find a spot in an otherwise crowded parking lot. On my way back out, near closing time, as I always do, I popped my head into the Tesla store just to say hello. As soon as I walked into the store, which was otherwise empty, the only employee on duty came running up to say thanks for parking the Roadster there! My green model-S t-shirt must have been a bit of a giveaway.

rsquared99 This little blurb illustrates the range of people who are "nuts" about Tesla. Not long after I got my Model S in mid-2013, I was stopped at a red light on a street that has 4 lanes of traffic in each direction. Trudging along the crosswalk was a lady, pushing a stroller, holding hands with a young girl, with a sack of groceries balanced somehow on the stroller. Following her was an 8 or 9 year old boy who looked over, saw the Tesla and immediately began jumping up and down and yelling to his mother, "it's a Tesla, it's a Tesla!" She glanced in my direction, but I'm sure she never saw the car, nor anything else, as her goal was to get everybody out of the traffic pattern. I'm sure she told him to hurry along. He stopped jumping, started following his mother again, and gave me a big thumbs up, which I returned.
About 2 months ago I stopped at a local Village Inn to have breakfast. As the hostess sat us at our table, she asked if I was the one driving the Tesla. Usual questions, how do you like it, where do you plug it in, can you road trip it? After the hostess left, an elderly lady sitting at the next table, asked if I had the Tesla here. "Excuse me for being pushy, but I'm 93 years old and I want to ride in a Tesla before my wick goes out!" Before breakfast or after, I asked. She said, right now!
Eight years old to 93 years old. Pretty good range of ages.
