ckessel I'm not sure what to think. These aren't minor things and seem like items that should have shown up in a pre-delivery checklist. Does the UMC work? Does the GPS work? Does the TPMS work?
Tesla has said they were slower ramping up to focus on quality. If these sorts of items are still what's showing after that quality focus, what was happening before?
Nov 24, 2012
FlasherZ To be fair, the UMC works - it's just that you have to aim it at the rear window when pushing the button to open the charge port. This was the case on another post I saw on the forums as well.
As for TPMS and GPS, it's very possible that during transport they worked their way loose -- GPS antenna, perhaps? and one of the TPMS sensors might have gone wonky.
The DS said this was the lowest mileage he had seen on a car yet - it had 22 miles on it. It's very possible this wasn't seen until the transport shook it up.
I'll wait until service gets a look at it before I pass judgment.
Nov 24, 2012
strider Did you do a cold/hard reset or just the screen reboots (holding the steering wheel buttons/wheels)? I believer Cinergi knows how to do a complete shutdown/reboot if Tesla didn't have you do that. May wake it up.
Nov 25, 2012
FlasherZ Just a screen unit reboot.

BYT_P1837 I have had my Model S for less then 4 days and I unfortunately haven't had much chance to take her out yet. Only issue I have so far is the car doesn't lock when I walk away even though its set to do so automatically. I also haven't tested HomeLink or adjusted the side mirrors to point down on reverse. Fingers crossed, LOVE the car and believe Tesla Motors is the real deal and shouldn't be compared to the others in regards to support and customer service and future customer satisfaction. dailydriver When corresponding with a service advisor about a message I was getting on the screen, he mentioned a way for beaming a screen shot directly to Tesla:
"When a message comes across, I would hold the menu button (below the roller ball on the right side of the steering wheel) for 5 seconds and a screen shot will be sent to our user interface group."
I have not had a problem since, so I have not had to use this. Has anyone else tried this?

Nov 27, 2012
stephenpace I will have to try that--I wonder if there is feedback that a screenshot was sent. I would love to be able to take my own screenshots and take them away on USB key. I'm assuming there will be an app to do that once they become available.

dsm363 Thanks. So it only takes a picture of the small LCD screen and not the 17" display, right?
Nov 27, 2012

dailydriver I experienced a rather odd hiccup yesterday while driving down Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. The song playing on Slacker radio stopped and it looked like it was trying to stream/buffer more of the audio. I tried to press the next button and nothing. I tried to select another audio source nothing. I tried to select another app nothing. The map screen was then locked up too. The entire screen then went black and a small x appeared in the center. The Tesla logo appeared on the screen for a few seconds and then everything came back up. It would appear that they system running the apps and touchscreen got hung up and rebooted itself. I wasnt able to take a picture and didnt get a screen capture sent (traffic was heavy and I needed to pay attention to the road good thing my wife was there to remind me of this as I fumbled for my phone :wink. The instrument cluster and operation of the car were unaffected.
No complaints here just documenting the issue. I am certain this kind of bug will be fixed in the next software update. I love the car!

cinergi Yup you crashed the GUI and saw XWindows restart. I've seen it a couple times ... let ownership know and if you know your service manager, let that person know, too. JohnEC I've had my S for a little over a month now and have driven just over 2500 miles. Of course I love everything about the car, but whenever I've been driving for a while at high speeds, I notice a hum from the back of the car (PEM/Motor) that seems louder than what I believe to be normal. I finally took it in to the service center (Menlo Park) and had the service manager there listen to it. He believes it's a bearing or ruff spot on a shaft somewhere or possibly something in the electronics. in any case, I'm now scheduled to bring it back in in a couple of weeks and will have to leave it there for a few days (they may need to swap out the drive train). While it's there, they will also fix up some fit and finish items and redo a spot of the paint armor in the front where it was slightly botched up. It will be difficult to have to drive a rental even for the few days. I wish they could loan me one of the several Roadsters they have just lying around there.
Nov 29, 2012
cinergi I wonder if this is the same thing I'm noticing. Above 65 MPH, I hear a faint, low-pitched noise that's similar to a spinning tire rubbing against something. That sound like the same thing? My service manager knows I have that on the list, but we haven't had time to get out on the highway with it yet.
Nov 29, 2012
Gigemags I've been on the road 2 weeks now and get a noise similar to a whine you might hear at a dentists office when I'm accelerating around (and thru!) 50-60 mph. I don't think it's normal engine noise.
Nov 29, 2012
JohnEC Could be. That's about the way mine sounds. It is low pitch and doesn't vary much in pitch, but does vary in intensity with the amount of power being applied (both positive and negative - it also occurs during regen braking). I don't know if I'll ever know exactly what the cause is however, if the solution is to swap the drive train. I'm certainly OK with not knowing as long as it goes away.
Nov 29, 2012
cinergi Hrm. Pitch in mine increases with speed. Not so much difference depending on the pressure on the drivetrain (accel/decel). I'll of course report back when I know more. The fun with these noises is not knowing what's normal
Nov 29, 2012
PRJIM Interesting, mine makes a noise reminiscent of a contactor constantly cutting in and out at low speeds. At high speeds I also have a whirling noise but speed has no correlation to this noise. @Cinergi, does the pitch on yours sound something like AM radio on the Roadster?
Nov 29, 2012
strider Could this be the "vibrating connector" noise heard by some at Get Amped events?
Nov 30, 2012
JohnEC No. That one is a high pitch whine that occurs with very high acceleration and just lasts for a second or two. This one is pretty much a continuous hum. The first time I heard it, I thought it was a nearby ICE with a bad muffler.
Nov 30, 2012
DrComputer I too get the same low pitched hum at high speeds. The intensity of the hum is sometimes very loud and sometimes not very noticeable. I think it might have to do with the cooling system and how it is routing to the drive components. If you go into the special diagnostic screens there is a very cool live diagram of how the cooling system is routing throughout the car. It seems to have several modes of bypassing certian components and using one, two or three of the condensers in the front. This might be what it making the hum sound.

Dec 1, 2012
ddenboer Went out to the car a little while ago to make a quick grocery run (needed buttermilk for my Saturday pancakes!), and when I got to the car and opened the door, the lights did not turn on. When I sat in the driver seat, nothing lit up. When I pressed the brake, the screen finally lit up and I heard what sounded like a quick reboot, and the dash had an error message on it that said "Car needs service. Power reduced." My battery had 129 miles of rated charge left, so that wasn't it, and a few minutes later the error went away and I made my trip to the store. On the way I noticed that neither of my two USB sticks were recognized for music anymore.
Upon arriving home, I went to plug the car in and the charger port would not open from the screen or the UMC button. I pressed the keyfob buttons several times to try opening it and after a few minutes of standing in the rain, it finally worked.
Definitely some bugs for me tonight.

Psullivan I am on day 11 with "Tesie" as my neighbors have now named my Sig 924 Perfomance. What a great ride coming back from Fremont to Carlsbad over 3 days. It is truly an amazing car and I have had a great time scaring friends and neighbors with all the torque. I also have a few issues but no show stoppers.
1. My passenger door also takes more effort to close than the others. This has been pretty consistent. I hope it can be adjusted.
2. I have seen one time where my camera spit the screen where things that should be on the bottom (i.e parking lot) showed at the top half of the screen and the building behind was at the bottom half. Pretty strange. It has only happened once. Soft reboot of the console cleared it and I haven't seen it since. Working for a tech company my boss got quite a kick out of me having to "reboot my car" in front of him.
3. My AM stations pick up what appears to be electrical interference while accelerating or regenning. (My wife thought she was hearing sirens way behind us.) I listen to talk radio a lot so that is a bit annoying for me. I am hoping they can figure out a way to shield that.
4. I have noticed the drive train feels a little loose when in stop and go traffic between 4 and 9 miles an hour. It makes a little jerk when decelerating and then accelerating at low speeds. Anyone else feel this? My service manager said he had heard of it but couldn't recreate it. I have only noticed it at these very slow speeds (thanks California traffic.)
5. Homelink doesn't want to talk to my Chamberlin opener. Hopefully update will fix that.
6. Since I got the car I haven't figured out a way to wipe this silly grin off my face while driving. I figure it will take Tesla quite awhile to solve this one.
Pat
PS. I haven't gone into the San Diego service center yet but Chip and Bill have been great to talk with on the phone to answer questions and log these problems. Sean Berwald at owner experience is just plain awesome. Give that man more stock options please.

Dec 1, 2012
ADN_ModelS I have noticed this as well. Its as though the car "hesitates" and/or "shudders" at that low speed. It seems to be something that happens when the car is neither regenerating nor accelerating; meaning that odd moment of transition between the two. We notice it at low speed because you're very likely to be transitioning between the two frequently.
I did notice that the v4 software update mentions throttle response, and I'm wondering if this is what it will fix?
Dec 1, 2012
stephenpace @digitaltim: The two workarounds for ambient light buzz is to A) increase screen brightness to 100% or B) turn off the ambient lights. I did (B)--I like the ambient lights, and would ultimately like them fixed, but since it is likely to be a hardware change that will take a while, I can live with them off for now.

I am having a lot of fun but with the rain lately I didn't realize how hard it is to keep a red car clean. You will see me probably closer to your house than you think. I have been cruising up Alicante as part of my track to take friends for rides. (Of course never going over the speed limit.) Let me know if you would like to check out the car.
One other thing I should add to issues which I have seen on the forums before is that the bass in the back speakers is weak whether Dolby is on or off. I thought they had that worked out but apparently not. My expectations for the sound system are much higher than what I am getting right now.
Dec 2, 2012
JoshG Actually, on my car setting the night screen brightness to anything over 75% stops the ambient lighting buzz. I've got it set to 80%, which is brighter than I'd like, but stops the hum. I like the ambient lighting enough to put up with the slightly too-bright screens at night.

brianman After driving about 90 miles in cold weather (33-48 F) last night and arriving home with about 50 miles range (46projected or so), it was in "yellow bar" mode. The whole night I had climate control at 72 degrees. As I arrived home (about a mile from my house), the climate control seemed less effective and I figured perhaps there something that tripped in the battery protection and went to bed not really worrying about it.
Today when I woke up my vehicle (to scout for an update notification), I found that the climate control is set to LO.
Anybody else run across it flipping to "LO" on its own?

gmontem Came across my first mechanical problem with my car. For some reason I cannot open the rear left door from the inside. It can be opened from the outside, and through the emergency handles you pull from the floor (make sure your custom floor mats don't block these!). All other doors can be opened from the inside. I left the key in the cup holder to ensure it wasn't a problem of the driver leaving the car.

Arnold Panz Thought I'd post a picture of this -- there were questions previously as to whether the GPS worked when the 3G connection didn't. I had a terrible time the other night with my 3G connection, yet my GPS seemed to be working as my red arrow moved through these gray bars on the screen that wouldn't fill in because of the spotty 3G connection.
This becomes an issue when I'm trying to see traffic, and when the Nav system is trying to find an address or point of reference so I can get directions. Sometimes, I have to do this while driving to get a better signal, which obviously isn't the safest way to go about things. Unfortunate, but hopefully (eventually) we'll get 4G service and this will become less of an issue.

Dec 4, 2012
goyogi OK I figured out where the fuses are. In the back of the frunk lift the back of the plastic panel that covers the windshield wiper fluid. Just lift the back of it (close to the windshield) and it'll pop off the back and then you can pull it back towards the windshield and remove it.

Then there are two fuse boxes beneath. But usually there is a label somewhere that specifies what the fuses are for but I don't see such labels. Anybody know which is the 3G fuse or if there is a fuse diagram available?

goyogi Thanks dflye. It's labeled 'touchscreen'. I tried it and it didn't work. I'll call Tesla tomorrow.
Dec 4, 2012
dflye Not sure if your scenario is the same as mine: 3G worked fine at time of delivery, but stopped working at some point when garaged overnight a few days later. I have almost zero 3G coverage in the garage, very rarely can I type in a destination in the navigation before leaving the neighborhood. Once the S gave up on the 3G, it stayed off for several days (even when going through areas where it had great 3G coverage a few days earlier.) Tesla service had me yank the "touchscreen" fuse to give it a hard reset and then had me wait a few minutes before reseating the fuse. At that point 3G functionality came back.
Dec 4, 2012
goyogi Yeah, same thing. Was working fine for 3 weeks then got in the car one morning and I can't remember if it was shortly after take off or at start up but definitely within the first mile I noticed internet radio wasn't working but didn't troubleshoot and only 20 miles later when I went to navigation did it clue me in that 3G wasn't working.
This time I removed the fuse and waited a few minutes (7 minutes while I went and did something else) and after I plugged the fuse back in, 3G started up again. I'll report it to Tesla so that they have a record of it till they can figure out root cause.
Thanks again dflye.

Robert.Boston You should consider installing a MicroCell. I have one up in my place in Maine; works like a charm. Basically it is a little 3G cell tower that uses your internet connection to relay the call. I get perfect coverage, all with no monthly charges.
Dec 5, 2012
dflye Thanks for the info on microcells; I'd forgotten I had used one of those when we were with AT&T; after switching to Verizon didn't need the microcell anymore as I now get decent coverage even in my basement office. Still have the microcell HW, but now that we're not with AT&T, not sure if it could be rigged to work with the S.
Dec 5, 2012
DrComputer To setup an AT&T MicroCell you need to add the phone number of the device to the "allowed" list of the MicroCell. To do this (currently) you'd have to go into the secret diagnostic screens that George posted he doesn't want people to go into. In these screens you can find out the actual phone number assigned to the SIM in the car. This is another reason that the diagnostic information shouldn't be hidden from the end user... or at least be visible in a read-only mode.

Dec 7, 2012
ChadS We find that ours come on sooner than we would turn them on manually.
But that is fine; it's certainly better than them coming on later than we would turn them on. We have not noticed them come on in bright sunshine - it's only happened when it's cloudy and we're driving between buildings or under trees or something.

SUN-day Driver Maps not preloaded?
I thought the maps were preloaded and didn't require the data connection (like the small nav devices you put on the windshield). I thought I read that you get xx years of map updates. If that's not true I'm unhappy because I want working nav but don't know if I want to pay the monthly to have the 3G connection.

Dec 7, 2012
shokunin The navigation maps get xx years of map updates. This is the nav screen next to your speedometer, but the main display runs google maps, which currently uses the 3G connection to load the maps.
They need to a way to download maps like you can on Android. I can pretty much download all of LA, OC, and parts of SB county on my android tablet. So I would hope the Model S would have slightly bigger map download capabilities.
Dec 8, 2012
bob_p Google originally didn't allow maps to be cached locally on devices - I have the same problem with the golf app on my android phone - it keeps downloading the same satellite images for my golf course - every time.
But they changed their policy - and Tesla should be able to cache the maps locally. That should eliminate the delays in viewing the maps.
Wish Tesla would provide a list of the features they are already considering for future software updates - so we'd have an idea of what issues they're already planning to address (assuming they are able to successfully implement each feature).
Dec 8, 2012
MikeK Boy, that'd be great! Just cache the maps for the Bay Area (for me) and update when they change.
I have to say, I *LOVE* having the traffic information available while I'm driving. Last night there was an accident or breakdown on my route home. I was sitting in almost dead-stop traffic for awhile, but I could see that it was only up to the next exit. So, I just patiently enjoyed my Model S for a few extra minutes and then passed the problem area.
The next thing they need to do with traffic is have some way to tell you that it's the left two lanes that are blocked, versus the center, or whatever. Then you could get into a favorable lane well in advance and the whole thing would flow more smoothly...
Dec 8, 2012

MikeK Great thought! But, no, the wipers were set to off.
I figured it had to be a software issue, though, because as I pulled out of the garage this morning, my displays went from night mode to day mode, but the headlights were still on. So, I rebooted both screens, and presto! Problem solved. Now I'm going to have to try an experiment and reboot the screens at night to make sure the headlights stay on during the reboot (I'd wager that they do...)

aviators99 Had some windshield fog today. Hit the front defog button, and the thing went crazy. Started cycling between the lowest and highest fan speed levels, switching about 5 times per second, and continued to do that until I manually moved the fan speed slider--but then the defog went off. When I put the defog on again, it was more normal, but it forced the highest possible temperature. Maybe this is normal, but I don't think it's required on other cars. When I lowered the temperature even 1 degree, the defog went off again.

MikeK Has anybody had persistent "Low windshield washer fluid" warnings? I got these several times yesterday on starting the car, and got it again this morning. I opened the cap on the reservoir, and there was no fluid visible, so I filled it up and closed the cap. It took very little fluid to fill to the point of being visible, so I figured that it had plenty of fluid and I had just topped it up a bit.
No warning for awhile, but I got one again this evening. I opened the cap, and there's no fluid visible again. I'm a bit baffled. I certainly don't think I put in enough fluid to fill a typical washer fluid reservoir (maybe a cup or two). But, where did that fluid go? I haven't run the wipers at all.

contaygious Could someone help me turn off the car? I can't get it to turn off or lock the doors. It lets me get in without the key but says no key inside. It has been on for hours. When I press once in the key fob it just beeps. It will even play music the whole time.
Dec 8, 2012
aviators99 Yes, I also have this problem.
Dec 8, 2012
MikeK Have you found that it is losing fluid, or do you think it's just a spurious indicator?

A couple of things I could think to try:
- Reboot the center screen by pressing and holding both the rollers on the steering wheel for about 15 seconds
- Reboot the dashboard display by pressing and holding the top buttons on both sides of the steering wheel as above
- Get in with the key, put the car into gear and then into park again, and then get out
- Plug in the charging cable

cinergi It appears to be spewing random errors at startup as of version 4... I've had wiper fluid low warnings a couple times... did nothing about it ... warning went away .. and now it hasn't happened for several days ...
Dec 8, 2012
MikeK Ah. Interesting. I've only seen that warning, so I thought it might point to a real issue. I'll begin ignoring it now. ;-)

contaygious Fixed it! The right door wasn't closed all the way. I knew this was ping to be a problem....

PRJIM Is there a way to turn off auto updates?
Dec 9, 2012
JoshG YES! I've been getting this intermittently since picking up the car... maybe once a day i get the warning about low washer fluid. haven't bought or added any so don't know if it's real or not, but I'd be surprised if they don't check this at the factory at some point.

bob_p My 2007 LS has XM NavTraffic - and warns you about upcoming traffic challenges, and can even offer to re-route you around the congestion.
Does the Model S navigation have access to the traffic data? While it's visible on the Google Maps - that doesn't necessarily mean that the navigation software also sees and uses it for routing.

aviators99 Weird issue with the XM. When I'm listening to one channel and then I use the slider to get to another channel, a few seconds later the slider and display will show the channel number for the old channel. The audio is still for the new channel. I haven't experimented enough to track it down to when it happens, but it happened a few times today.

stephenpace It must. For example, it routed me a different way to Austin than normal due to traffic, and once the voice said something like "warning, accident reported ahead." Integration is subtle, though.

ckessel I know Tesla say the required door slam is by design, but when enough customers are having problems that tells me it's a bad design. Most other vendors seem to have normal doors.

Robert.Boston Does it help to close the passenger door first? I wonder whether the last door closed, regardless of side, is simply meeting with air resistance.

v12 to 12v The Google Map does show traffic flow. I believe it picks up signals from Android phones that are on the road to determine the speed of traffic. There is traffic data for areas that I never imagined possible. (At the same time, I find it quite creepy and I doubt that I would buy an Android because of this and other data collection issues.)
The navigation system does not offer up any route changes to compensate for congestion.

Maybe this is a regional feature. It didn't happen today when we came upon a back up due to an incident.

Ben W Just ran into a strange situation with my Model S (Sig Special Performance #61). The car had been charging for a couple days on 110v, then left on the plug for about 12 hours "full", with about 245 miles showing in Standard mode. Then I took the car out to drive, and immediately got the dotted orange warning line on the speedometer indicating that the power was limited to about 200kW. (Normally it can go to 320+kW.) This doesn't make much sense; the batteries shouldn't have been too hot after sitting for two days in a Los Angeles parking garage, and the charge level wasn't too low. (Low charge can reduce max power.) Any idea what else could trigger this power limit? I took a screenshot to send to Tesla, and will ask them too.
Dec 9, 2012
contaygious I had the power reduced issue today and I almost towed the car because I couldn't drive on the freeway, but they told me to hit power off and wait a minute and repeat 3 times and I did it and it fixed my issue so I could go fast again. They said there is a fix in date 3.5 I don't have yet so I'm just waiting for that and 4.0 to come still.

EarlyAdopter Do you have an iPhone or a Windows Phone 7/8? Apple and Microsoft collect the same traffic data on their phones.
Apple says it's building 'crowd-sourced traffic' service for iPhone users
Apple had a particularly bad bug a year ago where the phone's full location history was being kept in a file on the phone, never getting cleared, and it would end up backed up on your computer too, so anyone who got access to either could see every place you've ever been.
Apple issues statement on iOS location controversy, says fix is coming
In any case, the data sent to the service is anonomized and, at least for Android, the first and last few miles of each trip are dropped to ensure no data is kept about where you live or go. If it bothers you so much you can always opt out.

aviators99 Here's a picture of the XM bug. Apparently, it persists between trips, because I switched to 226 yesterday, and the picture is from today. The audio is coming from 226.

PRJIM Today my cluster showed regen, abs and traction control were all disabled. I tried to reset the cluster with the upper buttons but this had no effect. I ended up having to pull the fuses in the frunk. This happened twice. Very strange.
Sidenote: The Model S is borderline undrivable with T/C disabled.

Hi, When you say the car is borderline undrivable with traction control disabled what do you mean exactly?
. The instrument cluster and operation of the car were unaffected.
