FlasherZ Not going to get into a pissing match about it. I know what hellish downpours are, they've happened all my life here, they're the type that forces traffic to slow down regardless of what car you drive, and the Model S's wipers handle it just fine.
Want wiper problems in the rain? Try the single-speed, non-intermittent wipers in my 1964 Mustang.
Apr 17, 2013
Volker.Berlin I think at least one of you is missing the obvious here... I'd guess that it isn't necessarily the degree of hellishness of your respective downpours that is different. From your postings, it seems to me that your Model Ses wipe at different speeds. Simple as that. Not exactly the level of production quality that Elon is touting, but I'm sure they'll get it right eventually.
Apr 17, 2013
William13 Nervy, add aquapel or rain-x to your windows or washer fluid. The moderate speed of fast will be tolerable.
Apr 17, 2013
JRP3 I was thinking the same, maybe something wrong with Neroden's wiper speed. Video comparisons?
Apr 18, 2013
fluxemag Could be a function of what voltage the 12V is operating at during that time. From the graph I saw it has a pretty wide operating range.
Apr 18, 2013
JRP3 I'm still going with the theory that the DC/DC converter has two channels, one that charges the 12V intermittently as needed, as the voltage maps show, and one that keeps a constant voltage that powers the rest of the 12V accessories.
Apr 18, 2013
jweinstein I am having this issue as well. Can a software upgrade remedy this?
Apr 18, 2013
Matt_D When I took my car in today there was a firmware update for the DC/DC converter that was done. I didn't have this issue you are reporting earlier in the thread, but perhaps on some cars the symptoms manifest differently.
Apr 19, 2013
brianman I've gone through both of their experiences.
At times, my Model S has a horrible setting 1 and/or setting 2 experience. At other times it's perfectly fine.
These days it's mostly the latter (fine) but I think that's in part due to getting the ClearPlex + imbuing (or whatever they call it) that gives an aquapel/rain-x type experience (water runs off more quickly/easily).
Apr 19, 2013
SuperCoug This might be more appropriate to post in the firmware 4.4 section but generally speaking I'd say that I'm much less satisfied with the wiper speed in version 4.4. I would have thought that they would have made the rain sensing wiper settings much more sensitive in version 4.4 but I feel like my car is far less sensitive to rain after the updated firmware. Prior to version 4.4 I almost never had to manually push the wiper button to clear the windshield and my visibility was generally good. However, since the update the wipers aren't nearly as sensitive and my vision is being severely impaired by the mist (forcing me to manually engage the wipers).

Morristhecat Not sure whether to post here or in one of the doors threads. I was driving along today, and while stopped at a traffic light I looked in my right rear view mirror and noticed the rear passenger door handle was extended. I thought that was weird and looked at all the other door handles and as expected they were retracted flush with the car. Just the one was extended. So since I was stopped for a moment, I put the car in park to extend all the door handles. Then back in drive. The light turned green and as I drove off I saw all the handles close, including the right rear one that was extended before. Seems fine ever since. Hope this is a one off thing....
Apr 20, 2013
pbrulott My car sleeps in a very silent garage. When I approach the car with fob, handles auto-extend, car light up, etc but one thing I find strange is that when climate control is on (A/C off) , I hear a somewhat very strong compressor noise. Doesn't seem like a normal noise to me.
Anyone observed the same behavior
Apr 20, 2013
steve841 Likely the battery management system ..... pumps to cool or heat the battery
Apr 20, 2013
cwerdna If it's truly a "must-fix" safety issue, you should file a safety complaint at Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but there is a FMVSS on wiper speeds at Standard No. 104; Windshield wiping and washing systems. - Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
.
I have no S, but if it's not at least 45 cycles/minute on high, that would likely be recall class (and I'd file a safety complaint). I've seen recalls for much more minor violations of FMVSS.
Apr 20, 2013
Bruce I was looking through the thread and didn't see much on the doors I have a problem with my right rear passenger door. The handle comes out normally along with all the others, but I cannot open the door using it. If I open the door from the inside, it works fine. But it won't open from the outside. This happened once before randomly and then self corrected. It has not self corrected this time. Any ideas?
Apr 20, 2013
radinator Bruce, is the LED in the handle still lighting up? If it isn't, you may need to get the handle replaced.
Apr 20, 2013
Bruce No, the handle does not light up. So I guess I have to take it in to have them replace it Is this a common problem?

Apr 21, 2013
William13 Bruce, unfortunately the handles have had a lot of issues/replacements. Tesla was reaching for the brass ring with this one. No one else had the courage to use this type of handle previously. They could not get the handles to work for the factory event-preproduction. There are lots of moving parts and sensors that need to work properly in correct order. One of my handles finally misbehaved enough that it was replaced.
I think that when replacement is needed it will be very early or late in the life of the car. The bad handle started out having problems early and the others work well.
That said, the handles popping out when I walk up still puts a smile on my face.
Apr 21, 2013
jomo25 Not sure if it will help with reliability of the handles themselves, but apparently there is a new design on how they operate. I just posted a video to a thread in the User Interface sub forum that may show a difference. Though I am not positive it is a change.
Apr 21, 2013
Bruce Thanks William13, Appreciate the response. I gotta say that when people ask me (and this is all the time) about my Tesla, my response is still always an unequivocal "hooray!". I am happy to be a "Tesla Ambassador. It is sorta frustrating though when I am reminded at times that I am also a Tesla guinea pig
Good with the bad...

Apr 21, 2013
JohnnyMac Not sure if anyone is aware of this yet but while I was in the Santana Row store yesterday, I noticed and the reps confirmed, that they have made a change to the handles on the latest production cars (this particular floor display model had a very recent which had just arrived). After the handle auto presents, there is a bit more movement when you then pull the handle to open the door (i.e. it auto presents say 7/8ths of the old distance and then physically moves, say an additional 1/8th) when you pull the handle to open the door. They indicated that this was part of a new design to address prior issues. Just my two cents on this topic. Good to see it being addressed.

pbrulott Thanks fro your answer steve841, I think you're right, I plugged the car today while my garage door had been open for a long time (temps are still between the freezing and 50F, spring is pretty cold this year). And while it was not cold enough to heat the battery from the battery power (was not below critical temp which I think is close to -10F), when it detected shore power the compressor noises started.

I've got the same problem. My closest service center (Los Angeles) refuses to fix it, they just say "wait for next firmware, it will fix itself." I've had the door handle problem (doors won't lock) for 30 days now, and have had 4 firmware updates since the problem first started, and it still isn't fixed. The service center *still* refuses to look at my car -- and I've got over 10 other problems with it as well. If anyone manages to get their door handles fixed by the L.A. Service Center please explain to me how to go about it. I even paid for the 4-year unlimited ranger service which they refuse to honor.

steve841 If you aren't on the phone to the manager ... you should be to Ownership. I had that issue and drove by my SC and it was reloaded without wait! 30 min later, I was on my way back to work.

patp Yes. Same for me. Compressor is noisy. But I think some more than others.
Apr 23, 2013
scriptacus Noticed a "squeek" sound between the 40-60mph range while gunning it... it's very different from the whine you can hear when accelerating. The best description I can give is that it sounds like air being let out of a balloon. The sound can be heard very clearly a few seconds into the linked video. (apologies for the shaking... was filmed while driving)
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/27585/Squeek.MOV
Has anyone else heard this?
Apr 23, 2013
steve841 Well documented issue .... it's - for lack of a better word - Normal.
Apr 23, 2013
neroden That is not acceptable. The current firmware (I have the absolute most recent) is working fine for most of us (complete with 'auto present handles'). There is something specifically wrong with your car, and they are refusing to honor the service contract. Call HQ. If that doesn't work, your next stop may be your lawyer. Yuck.
- - - Updated - - -
Service tech tested it and said it was supposed to wipe at this speed. So I guess that means that's what he's seen on other cars.
- - - Updated - - -
Thank you. I'll time it with a stopwatch. You know what? I'm guessing it is slightly over 45 cycles/minute; that sounds about right. Every car I've had before had wipers much faster than the legally required minimum.
In the meantime, it's "pull over ASAP and wait it out" in heavy rain.
- - - Updated - - -
54 cycles/minute.

I don't say this to incite anyone's wrath or to start a negative thread, but if I were you, I would really start investigating (if you haven't) your state's lemon laws. If you have, I would submit a claim. I don't feel that this is a condemnation of Tesla, rather the the particular one that you own.
Apr 28, 2013
William3 If any given defect takes over 30 days to repair then the car is a good candidate for the lemon-law buyback. It makes you wonder, what if it takes over 30 days just to get the service appointment? Or what if they simply refuse to accept the car into the service department? How would the lemon-law treat that situation? Hmmmmm.....
I took extraordinary steps (that no one should have to take) and finally got them to accept my car into the service department. They don't have any Model S loaner cars yet. Their main service facility is too crowded, so they are attending to my car at the remote offsite facility that they are renting. I gave them a list of 13 issues to deal with, we'll see how many they can address. Only 4 of them are serious enough that I'd lemon-law the car if they couldn't fix them.
Apr 30, 2013
aviators99 I happen to be a Lemon Law expert.
The 30 day presumption is for 30 days "out of service". So if the car is drivable, it doesn't fall under that presumption for the days you are waiting for an appointment.
I'm happy to answer any other Lemon Law questions. Also, understand that the Lemon Law varies by state, but they were all based on the same template.

znino Update on my rear bench leather folds. I had the left and right rear seat side bolster leather quite bad with some folds (not well stretched over the foam part underneath. See picture). I originally thought it might just be the way it was but after checking with others I could not find anyone with the problem as bad as me. I emailed a picture of the seats to ownership and very politely asked them if this was normal on April 14. A week went by with no response from them but then I received an email from the local service center saying, your parts have come in, when can we set up an appointment? I was initially confused because ownership had not responded to me but apparently on receiving my pictures, no questions asked, they shipped a brand new rear bench to Montreal and now, 2.5 weeks later it is installed in my car and 100x better looking. Really quite the service. I am extremely impressed with that speed and desire to please
The picture below is what they used to look like. Now they are properly stretched.

robaross On occassion when I close the driver door, 17" screen and speedo screen go black, and AC stops. Resumes almost immediately. Anyone else seen this and if so, what is the cause?
May 1, 2013
Bruce Just had the ranger come and fix my rear non-working handle. He just replaced the pressure sensor. Said that it is unfortunately rather common. I asked him about the new handles that have more movement, and he said that he is 90% sure that it will be a software update. He stated that all the necessary parts in the original handles and that with a proper download, the will be able to get them to travel out further. He said that would also improve the sensor problem. By the way. the sensor replacement was quick and easy - and done in my garage in about an hour.

kbeckley When I was at the service center last week I asked if I could see the door handle mechanism (engineer in me...). They kindly got a new one off the shelf to show me. This was no minor piece of engineering. Clearly when they (Elon?) went for this design someone spoke up and said 'this could be a real reliability mess'. According to the tech they built in redundancy for a number of the components (mainly sensors). Anyway I recommend if you have interest in such things and if they can oblige have a look at one. While there have been a number of issues with the handles (not for me) based on my cursory look they have put serious work into the mechanism. Bodes well for the long term.
May 3, 2013
Chris I experienced the same. It is rare though. Since the screens come back almost immediately I did not think of it as a major issue. Makes me skip a beat when it happens though

May 3, 2013
kbeckley I have been having an issue with my intermittent wipers. Wanted to see if anyone else had experience it. When I put the intermittent (rain sensing) wipers on they work well (even better after the last few software updates). Eventually (after say 2-3 minutes) the wipers suddenly go into high speed mode and stay there. The only way to stop them is to click back to the wiper's off position then reset them to the setting I wanted. The software is gung-ho on running the wipers at high speed and no setting will convince it otherwise except turning the wipers off. This happens every time however it takes a few minutes to go into this rapid mode. Clearly it is not dirt on the sensor because adjusting the knob has no effect and when I reset it works again for a while. The tech hadn't heard of the issue so he recommended that I post here and that I record the next time it happened so they could pull the logs. Very minor issue but surprised I has not seen it on these boards. Now I am waiting for rain...
May 3, 2013
mknox I happened to be in the Service Center when they were unpacking a large shipment of parts. Some for customers and some for "inventory" I was told. A couple of door handle assemblies were in the mix, and you're right... it's a fascinatingly complex piece of machinery. I still contend overly complex for the intended purpose, but fascinating nonetheless.
- - - Updated - - -
Nope. I've had somewhat the opposite experience. Auto wipers start out working fine, then it's as if the sensitivity has dropped and they don't wipe enough. At that point, I click it up to the second setting which works for a while until eventually I don't get enough wipe with that setting.
May 3, 2013
JohnQ +1 on this. Though I've only had one day of drizzle so need to replicate before having a firm opinion.
May 3, 2013
jerry33 Mine work the same way yours do. I've taken to either having them on, or pushing the button because the intermittent settings just don't work well. A couple of fixed intermittent speeds would be far better.
May 3, 2013
dlmorgan999 Agreed (unfortunately).
May 9, 2013
Cirrus I've had both problems on the same drive. The intermittent is often not good enough even on the second setting. Two days ago, I had the fast runaway wiper syndrome while it was on intermittent. I turned them off and back on and they reset.

Mnlevin I got my car last Friday and haven't really been able to find a complaint. Todd Burch Wednesday morning I went out to my car and it had a foot-long stress crack in the lower-right region of the windshield--same one that other early VINs encountered--and that Consumer Reports encountered on their vehicle. (Crack wasn't there when I parked--and there were no signs of damage from impact). A bit odd that this didn't show up until over 4 months and 6,500 miles into ownership.
I called Tesla Wednesday morning to report it, and also sent an email to my local service manager. Here we are, almost Friday morning, and I haven't received a call back.
Granted, the service folks are understaffed right now, and my problem is not preventing me from driving the car--but the crack grew another 6 inches today--so would like to hear back soon...
May 10, 2013
pilotSteve As other have reported, I tried placing my iPhone5 in the cubby under the center screen. That seems to clear up 80+% of the distortion that my callers report when I leave the phone in my pocket or place in the cup holder area.
Makes the culprit a BlueTooth issue rather than microphone IMO.

daddygo Media Screen went blank. No air conditioning, radio or access to any system controls. Called Tesla three times over three days. Tech asked me to push both toggle buttons for 20 seconds to reboot the media screen. Didn't work. Told me to hold the two top buttons above the toggle buttons to reboot the driver screen. Didn't work. Told me service would call. Pulled out the manual, located the fuse for the media screen, pushed on it and it "clicked" in. Now the screen works.
Read another post that indicates the fuses will back out on their own.

mknox I had read that the fuses may not have been pushed in firmly at the factory. I pulled off the cover and checked both fuse boxes and sure enough, many were not fully seated.
May 14, 2013
Suzieq Based on this post, I decided to check mine as well. Sure enough, I found the same situation. At least four or five seemed to "click" in a little when I pushed down on them. Interestingly, while checking the owners manual for the procedure for opening the fuse boxes, I noticed that there were three. Number one box is supposed to be only for Tesla service, and while it's location was noted right next and to the left of #2 and #3, I could not find it. Looked carefully too. Anybody know where it is? Am I just blind?
May 17, 2013
gg_got_a_tesla My first real mechanical issue after 4 months (not counting the sporadic TPMS warning that goes away).
And, of course, it has to be the door handles! The passenger rear handle goes in and out okay but, pulling it doesn't unlatch the door which can then only be opened from the inside. Removed and plugged back in fuse 40 (I think) from the fourth column in fuse box #2; that resolved it a couple of days ago but, the symptom is back again today.
Off to the service center for me...
- - - Updated - - -
Sheesh, no appointment at Menlo Park till Thursday, June 6th! They'd have to replace the handle assembly apparently.

znino Out of the blue, tonight I noticed that my center console screen did not automatically switch to night mode. It is set to Auto as it always has been. Manually switching it to Night does flip it to the dark scheme but as soon as I put it in Auto it goes into Day mode. It was pitch black outside. I've read that the auto function is controlled by a sensor. where is this sensor? I would think it is the same sensor used for the headlights and those seem to be functioning correctly when set to Auto.
I have rebooted both screens twice but still the same behavior. Strange....
Has anyone ever had this happen to them and what fixed it?

mknox Charge Port Won't Say Closed
Happened a couple of times now: Close the charge port, hear the "clunk" get in the car and it pops open again. Today it did it three times before I could drive away. By the third time, I just sat in the car with the door open and waited for it to pop open again, which it did. Finally it stayed closed. I re-booted the center console, so we'll see if that helps.
Anyone else see this?
May 20, 2013
efusco One time, just the other day. My daughter (age 8) unplugged and closed the charge port door then noticed it had popped back open before getting in the car. Can't be positive she closed it firmly enough the first time, but she does this all the time and knows how it's supposed to work.

gg_got_a_tesla Buzzing behind the touchscreen
My list of mechanical problems has started to grow.
I already have the door handle issue mentioned a few posts earlier; surprisingly, after sitting out in the sun all day yesterday (I'm not sure if there's a connection), the passenger rear handle started working again! I'll get it replaced in any case.
Now, I have the buzzing sound behind the center touchscreen that some have reported, I think. It's quite audible with music and A/C off. Don't recall if folks have said that this needs a screen change?!
May 21, 2013
qwk I think the buzzing is normal. My car has had it since day 1, and it comes and goes(temp. related?)
May 21, 2013
gg_got_a_tesla Hmm. I never had it before. It doesn't go away at all and is present the first thing in the morning even in a cool garage. It's not quite the quiet car it used to beI'll ask the service folks to take a look in any case.

May 21, 2013
rogbmw gg - I have noticed that too, especially as it is getting warmer. I was just wondering if there was a fan/motor for the back of the touch screen to cool it down. That is what is sounds like on mine. It is definitely not the A/C motor/compressor sound. I do not notice mine all the time - just occasionally and especially on warmer days.
May 21, 2013
Todd Burch GG,
Are you sure you're not hearing the ambient light buzzing noise? You'll hear it with headlights and ambient lights on, and touchscreen brightness below about 85%.
Also, "Hail to the Orange, Hail to the Blue..."
May 21, 2013
gg_got_a_tesla Thanks, Roger.
Hey Todd, nope, this is in broad daylight with no lights on. It's clearly some fan humming behind the screen, much like in an old desktop's power supply. Does sound like the Tegra 3's cooling fan as Roger suggests.

May 21, 2013
Todd Burch It's hard to tell from the video what the volume is--recordings can be misleading. I've heard a cooling fan from day one, but wouldn't consider it loud. Mine is audible, but not overbearing. Based on the video yours does sound a bit loud.
May 22, 2013
ddruz gg - That would drive me nuts too. IMO you are justified in pursuing getting it remedied. My car has no such noise. It is deadly silent, eerily so. The silence is actually my favorite driving experience, more so than everything else that usually gets all the raves.
May 22, 2013
Ditpixs I have the same fan noise. It started sometime around when I got 4.4. Initially I thought it was caused by the higher temps as summer nears, but it doesn't ever seem to stop. I called service in Fremont and all they suggested was that I bring it in, so it is on the list for my first service visit.
May 22, 2013
jcstp I remember seeing on a photo, that on the top of the backside of the screen, there are 2 fans!
The 17" is looking as a big touchpad, with two big fans strapped to the back!
So hearing the fans is plausible! And with such a silent car, you hear things you obviously are unaware of in an IC-car
May 27, 2013
NigelM I had the exact same thing last week, just before my car went in for the 12k. It's the variable speed MCU fan but there's a firmware glitch which means that when it gets up to 100% it won't dial back down. The temporary fix is to pull the fuse but the service center knew all about it and also knew in advance that v4.5 firmware will fix the problem.
Here's my video from last week:
Thanks to the Tampa guys I'm back to peaceful silence.
May 27, 2013
gg_got_a_tesla Thanks, Nigel! If I don't get the update before, I'll ask the service folks to move my car up to v4.5 this Friday.
May 28, 2013
shokunin I thought I was getting senile. I swore I closed the door after removing the cable, turned around hung the cable on the wall and got into the car. "open charge port" door icon is showing. This has probably happened 20+ times.
May 28, 2013
brianman I've gotten into the "close, hold hand until ACK and then get in the car" habit. By "ACK", I mean "acknowledgement" and by that I mean the click that confirms the locking or whatever has engaged while the charge door is closed. Works every time.
Regarding the italics... My impression is that sometimes the spring is fast enough that it swings open before the locking engages.
May 29, 2013
gg_got_a_tesla Couldn't wait till Friday as I couldn't put up with the touchscreen hum anymore. Pulled and reseated fuse 51 in the fuse box 2 and that did the trick! Not parking the car out in the hot sun (ahem, nowhere in sight in the Bay Area right now) for a bit.
May 29, 2013
Todd Burch GG, we had our first "hot" day here (90F+) and my cooling fan has now pegged to 100%. I'm going to call service to see if they can push me to 4.5, but if not I'll reseat the fuse. Thanks for confirming the temporary workaround.
Come on 4.5...what is taking you so long!!! Updates just seems to be coming less frequently all the time...
May 30, 2013
gg_got_a_tesla Weird; got 4.5 this evening and strangely, the touchscreen fan noise is back post-update! I don't think the bug's quite fixed in this release. I'll show it to the Fremont service center folks tomorrow before reseating the fuse once again (or have them do it).
May 31, 2013
Todd Burch Maybe you have to reseat the fuse *after* the update?
Nigel said the 4.5 update fixed it for him. I got 4.5 last night, so I have my fingers crossed.

scaesare I've seen the issue with the loud "compressor/pump" sound referred to before... specifically when standoung outside the car when it kicks in. It's now happened to me a couple of times.
Interestingly, I also happened to be getting out of the vehicle at one point when it kicked in, and I noticed vibration in the steering wheel. I recall one thread saying the fix involves re-routing the lines so that they don't reverberate against portions of the steering mechanism.
Is this a well-known issue that service center personnel are likely to be aware of? Anybody know if there's a published TSB on it?
I'm taking my S85 in to the local center today for headliner issues, and thought I'd see if they can address this as well...
Thanks.

Todd Burch No, it requires you to reseat Fuse 51. (Area 51?)
May 31, 2013
NigelM We had afternoon temperatures well over 100F yesterday and the fan seemed fine. There's no way to force a test but, as Todd says, it seems to be ok now.
That's the AC. Definitely not the fan hum issue.
Yes to both questions. This was adjusted when I had my 12k done.

Zythryn Interesting. With our Sig we never had the fan issue. With our 60kWh we had the fan issue with the 4.4 software. When we got the 4.5 update the fans stopped without the need to pull the fuse.

mknox Doesn't work for me. I close, get the "click" then get in the car. As I'm putting on my seatbelt, I get another "click" and the "Chargeport Open" message comes on the dash. Get out, close chargeport again and repeat. Usually happens two or three times. I now just stand at the side of the car waiting for it to happen to avoid getting in and out of the car. To be fair, it doesn't happen all the time, but enough to be annoying.
Not sure if it's related, but my UMC's button will no longer open the chargeport... I have to use the touchscreen. I know the UMC's button works, because it works to unlock the handle when I'm done charging. I've been using the touchscreen to open the port anyway, because even back when the UMC button worked, the car would not recognize that the adapter was plugged in if I opened it with the UMC, only if I opened it with the touchscreen.
I have a workaround for now, but something for Service to check next time I'm in (unless the 4.5 update that is waiting for me to install fixes it).
May 31, 2013
scaesare Excellent, thanks NigelM.

The fact your UMC is NOT working makes me wonder if there's some RF interference nearby that could be mucking up your UMC button and occasionally triggering your chargeport door... although I'd expect it would then happen at other times too...
May 31, 2013
mknox That's an interesting thought, but it does it at work sometimes too. There, I unlock the car, press the J1772's button and pull the J1772 and adapter out of the car. Close the port, hear the clunk, wait, hear another clunk and the port pops open again. Maybe my cell phone in my pocket?

brianman I'd ask service about this next time you go in. That seems like a faulty -- something.
May 31, 2013
mknox It's on my list. The first time I took it in, they verified a problem with my old UMC, tried a new one and it worked. About two weeks later the problem recurred. It seems to me it must be something in the car itself, since I get the same kind of weirdness when I'm using public stations and my UMC is miles away at home. As long as I open the chargeport from the touchscreen, it charges just fine, and for now, I can put up with the 1 in 5 times the chargeport cover plays it's little close then open again game. (I actually did throw a roll of duct tape in the car in case I'm out and it decides it just isn't going to stay closed).

scaesare Headlight/Displays Quirk
(I posted this elsewhere, but I forgot there was this dedicated thread for such things. Mods, please feel free to delete the other in the User Interface section)
Always keep my headlights on "Auto". When I jump in my car in the garage, they typically come on until I pull out in to the sun. My dash & console typically don't go in to night mode, however. (Which is interesting, now that I think about it...)
This morning my headlights came on and the interior displays were in night mode. After pulling out in to the sun, neither reverted. I thought perhaps I had a dirt spot over the sensor, so I squirt/windshield-wipered the windshield. No deal.
Bringing up the controls, I toggled the interior displays to "Day", then back to "Auto", and they then behaved correctly. Tried to do the same toggle trick for the headlights, but they stayed on.
Rebooted center console... no fix. Finally I parked at the store. When I jumped back in, it behaved correctly, with lights being off when in "Auto" on a sunny day.
This is firmware v4.5 (.43 flavor).
Jun 4, 2013
mknox I had the exact same behavior this morning (also on v4.5). I toggled the display to "Day" and just left it there. I left the headlights in the "Off" position. I stopped for a coffee, and when I came out, the display was still in "Day" (this is new, it used to revert to "Auto" after a stop and re-start), but my headlights had reverted to "Auto".
Jun 5, 2013
RyanG It seems like after 4.5 it sometimes takes longer to decide when to revert back to headlights off for me. I think it takes 30 sec to a minute, but it eventually does for me. What's weird is that coming out of my garage it's immediate, out of the garage at work though it has this delay. It may be related to either the time driving in the garage or that I am leaving work in lower light conditions. Just my guess though.
Jun 5, 2013
scaesare Interestingly, I noticed similar yesterday after my morning headlight weirdness.... in the evening I drove thru a long shady patch, and the headlights went on... I then came out in to sunlight for another couple of minutes before I finally got to my destination, and they never kicked back off. Hadn't noticed before, but at only 10 days in, I still am experiencing new driving conditions.
I suspect they have some hysteresis in the system depending on what mode the car powers up in. If its dark enough for headlights when coming out of park, they may kick off immediately in sun, because the likelihood is that you are coming out of a garage... whereas if they kick on after having been in the light, they stay on a bit jus to avoid rapid flashing in "tree shadows at highway speed" scenarios. Maybe it's even speed sensitive...
Jun 5, 2013
mknox I believe this also, and think they've been trying to tweak it with each release. A couple of versions ago, I noticed that my headlights were flicking on and off a lot more than my past cars ever did (and more than I thought was necessary).
Jun 5, 2013
jomo25 Mine does this with 4.4. So i dont think its a 4.5 thing. The amount of time between switching is very different between these 2 scenarios: coming out of/going into my garage and driving through a lighted half mile underpass. In the underpass, the lights do switch on and off when out, but its delayed. Whereas with my garage its fairly instant. My thought wouldbe speed sensitivity. But cant say for certain.

Zapped Any explanation on not being able to fix the alignment issue.
Hope it's not something complex or unique about the suspension design.
I'm taking mine into an alignment shop tomorrow. Hit a pot hole and steer wheel is no longer centered when driving straight.
Jun 9, 2013
kevincwelch I haven't hit anything...it would be nice if there actually was a causative factor.
I am beginning to believe the assembly is poor or that the problem exceeds the capability of the on site personnel.
If it is fixed and occurs again, I will be sending it up the ladder.

digitaltim Clicking sound...
I have not had a chance to search the forum, but I have noticed a loud clicking sound when slowing down and then accelerating - it appears to be coming from the right rear wheel.
I am about the cross the 20k mile mark.
Thoughts?

Doug_G My door handles have been 100% reliable since they were replaced... until the other day when I came out to the car and saw this:
![]()
The handle was inoperative. I pushed on it and it retracted, but it wouldn't pop out again.
Drove for 20 minutes and suddenly it was working again.
Also yesterday I realized that the door handles no longer extend when I put the car in Park. They don't extend until I open the door. Is that a new 4.5 behavior???
Jun 10, 2013
Todd Burch I don't think so. Might want to check to make sure your door handle fuses are seated properly. Short of that, I'd suspect software bugs vs. a hardware issue. In fact, I think many of the door handle issues people were seeing early on were in fact software bugs. I had handle issues pretty frequently when I got the car, until a stable software update (4.3 or 4.4?) seemed to cure them all.
Jun 10, 2013
cinergi I had the same problem ('cept it was a piece of wood). It sounded AWFUL. Never had something like that happen in previous cars. Interesting.
Jun 10, 2013
ckessel I'm now getting a popping noise when I turn the steering wheel. Particularly at a stop or low speed and seems worse when just starting driving vs. been driving for a while. Heard from others this isn't an uncommon development, but it takes several hours to fix.
I love my Model S, but I'm not very impressed with the quality. in just 5 months I've had:
- rear door handle didn't retract
- charge port door doesn't open (but does unlock, so I could pry it open)
- rear tire hub/bearings got loose and made a "whump, whump, whump" while driving (not the lugnuts, something internal according to service)
- center screen randomly thought it was getting touched, flashing up various screens (screen was replaced)
- tar/goop drug onto the roof by the pano retracting
- steering popping sound
I think this comes close to matching or exceeding the number of non-maintenance issues I've had in all cars I've owned combined over 20 years.
Jun 10, 2013
Zapped I curious about the "whump, whump..." wheel bearing item. I don't suppose you know what they had to tighten ?
Jun 10, 2013
mknox Well, not for me. Mine still extend upon going into Park although since 4.5 it seems the handles on the passenger side start to extend an instant before those on the driver's side... that's new for me.
Jun 11, 2013
Doug_G it is not consistent. Today they extend when I put it in park.
Jun 11, 2013
DrComputer There is a TSB for the clicking sound while going slowly and turning the wheel. The LA service center just fixed mine when I brought the car in to have the tires rotated.

irishstoutaz Frunk Latching Issue
We have had a couple occasions where the frunk did not close easily and seemed the 'fix' was to close with our hands on the each side (right at the edge) of the hood. That seemed to work until yesterday when I was taking a co-worker for a quick drive and pulled back into the parking lot and right when I entered the entrance with the sloped driveway the warning chime of an open door sounded and said it was the frunk. It had actually opened and had to close it again. :scared: It seems the slight flex of the car entering the driveway on an angle possibly caused the latch to disengage or could be that the frunk wasn't closed all the way but it did stay down and seemed fine prior to it popping open.
I am going to have the SC check this when it is in for a passenger door rattle next week but wanted to see if anyone has had a similar issue.
Jun 12, 2013
JRP3 Frunk closing seems to be something of an issue. Frankly I thought it had been fixed by now.
