cab Ah for the good old days of 2015 Q4 "get 'em sold!" price drops...pricing (especially P85 and P85+ cars) has stagnated a bit it seems. Unlike the new cars (which qualify for the rebates) I don't suppose there is much incentive to drop prices in January.
I would assume the next round of drops will likely occur in March as they try to hit Q1 numbers, preview the Model III and HOPEFULLY Model X production ramps up more and folks start trading in their Ses. The latter should also help to push a few more cars to the private sale market as well.
My "plan" is to test drive the new 2017 Volt (had a 2012...lease was up in July and GM decided not to roll the 2016 Volt out in Texas) around March when it gets here and then "make the call" as to whether I go for it or step up to a CPO Model S. Honestly, my biggest dilemma? I work from home 98% of the time and the "financially responsible" version of me is like "WTH...why do you even need ANY new car???!!!"...I really hate that guy.
Jan 23, 2016
AMPd I have a decision to make in about 4 months.
My standard 85 will reach 50k miles, the decision I'm faced with is purchase an extended warranty or trade it in and upgrade to a p85+ via CPO (I drove the p85+ and loved the handling, it was fantastic!) OR lease a brand new p90d, the p90d is quicker than the p+ but some might say the handling on the + is better, but with the p90d I can get the exact options I want...
Im indecisive, I go back and forth everyday
Jan 23, 2016
KJD If you must test drive a new Volt, then please test drive a new Tesla the same day and tell me which is the better car.
As far as being financially responsible, I could ride the bus to work every day and save a bunch of money over owning a car, but I choose not to. Call it a guilty pleasure if you like.

Jan 23, 2016
cab So to be clear, I already know the Model S is an awesome ride (4 test drives later), but the new Volt may be "good enough" from an enthusiast point of view. I neglected to mention one of my primary drivers here is the "fun to drive" factor. The old Volt was awesome, but it never inspired me to want to "have fun" in it. Even with the bit of torque it had off the line, I almost never nailed it since it wasn't "satisfying" (note: my two previous rides were 400hp V8 stick shifts, etc.).
Comparatively, I test drove (over 3 days) the BMW i3 with range extender and it was a blast to drive around town (light, tossable, just FUN), but its freeway manners were really marginal, the ride was choppy, suicide doors were impractical, etc - too many negatives. Now the new Volt is getting a lot of praise for its "fun to drive" factor as compared to the original and performance seems signifcantly improved - hence my comment that it may be "good enough" in that area. Conversely, I might find it is more similar to the old Volt than I had hoped and I might come away feeling "meh" about the overall, improvement. Oddly enough, the Chevy BOLT might also be a "funfactor" contender given its form factor and sub 7 second 0-60 time (BMW i3-like w/o all the drawbacks).
Jan 23, 2016
DougH Why not just buy the cheapest Model S you can find?, there are such good deals right now....private party not through Tesla.
Jan 23, 2016
Jo- Where are those deals? In looking for the "cheapest one I can find" with RFS, nowhere have I seen better deals than the CPOs- which have had a handful pop up sub-45k..and bare bones 60s around 35K...Ebay, Cars.com, panjo, etc. are all over-priced for the 60s and high mile, early vin 85s. Not that I'm doubting you, but I'm just not finding/seeing them.

kwjayhawk Hank,
Can you help clarify why some VINs have a P in front of them? Specifically I'm looking at those lower priced S60 and S85 where some have P and some have just numbers but I'm guessing it has something to do with P's being early vins? Would those P's have or not have something? (Thinking early battery pack/DU?)
Just trying to understand in hopes of a future purchase.
Thanks,

supersnoop The first 1,000 or so start with S (for Signature), and then they switched to P with five digits. Now, they've built so many car, they need another digit, so they dropped the P.

pre Christmas deals were the best and since then the choices haven't been attractive IMHO. Thoughts on what's going on from corporate? Maybe the delay will get me an AP car if my patience can hold out.
Jan 28, 2016
chriSharek Wshowell, I have ordered exactly what I wanted - description in signature below. But, I thought I would check and see if there were any CPOs that might fit the bill. NOTHING. There are a bunch of P85Ds from those that have to have the latest and greatest ludicrous mode and the 60s you mention, but if you want AP, you're spending $100k on a used P85D. Nothing in between. I guess I'll have to "settle" for the car I ordered.![]()
Oh, I have asked my local sales team to see if they can find an inventory car that might match closely. I might save a little, but I'm not expecting a miracle.
Jan 28, 2016
DRasheed I agree that the deals have worsened over the past 2 weeks or so. I noticed the overall inventory has gone down from about 520 to 465, so it seems like the cars are getting bought faster than new ones are coming onto the market. Seems like simple supply and demand is driving up the prices.
As to why the supply is going down or demand is going up, it would be hard to know for sure. Maybe the CPO site is getting more popular/well known? Maybe there haven't been many trade ins lately?
Jan 28, 2016
ahurst And where are CPO 85D's? I rarely see those.
Jan 28, 2016
Cyclone Give it time. A couple factors control why they are more rare:
1. They began deliveries a few months after P85Ds, so they are a younger "model" to have hit the CPO market
2. They were never the "top of the line" model, so the buyers of them may be less likely to trade up soon.
-- Some P85D buyers may have bought that model for more than the Tesla experience or eco-friendliness. Not all of them, but some of them. Thus, this "crowd" is more likely to have traded in for a P90D or a "supercar" from another company.
This doesn't explain every scenario, but likely plays in role in why CPO 85Ds are more rare than CPO P85Ds.

From what ive seen there was a noticeable drop in price back in November and December. Since then I haven't seen the same level of prices. It could have just been that there were higher mileage cars for sale back then. I think trade ins come in waves. As tesla was pushing to make year end sales goals on new cars this resulted in a large number of trade in s from customers. I would suspect that the next big push in cpo volumes will be when the x deliveries hit in full force or when the first leases expire.

DRasheed I'm on a tighter budget than the average poster here so I ended up with a grey S85, 2013 with about 22K miles. Rear seats, leather, pano, and air suspension. Got it for 58,200. I don't think that it was the best deal ever, but it was exactly what I wanted so I pulled the trigger.
I really wanted the 85 battery, and I have 2 young kids who will fit in the rear seats for several years so that was a must for me. Needing rear seats really limits your selection, unfortunately, since less than 20% of the cars have it. I acknowledge the "cool factor" of autopilot and strongly considered getting a new 70, but the range of the 85 battery and saving another 12K was more important to me.
I got the alert from Hank's site, and within 20 minutes I put down my deposit.

Jan 29, 2016
dgpcolorado After mulling it over for awhile I decided to look for a 2014 with a VIN at 38,000 or higher to get a somewhat newer build, rather than go for one of the cheapest cars. (I also kicked around the idea of leasing a new 70D, but after spending more than $30k over three years I'd end up with no car.) I'd been watching the car I bought for several weeks hoping that it would come down in price but I really wanted to get moving on it before my spring travel season starts in late March. So, I pulled the trigger yesterday.
I picked up one of the "overpriced" S60s mentioned by several others upthread albeit with very low miles after comparing it to a more expensive (+$8500) but slightly newer S85 with higher miles. I'd have to pay a $1500 transport fee for either car, so that wasn't a consideration. Since the car hasn't been registered in Colorado it will be eligible for our $6000 tax credit.
Getting the S60 will mean somewhat longer Supercharging times, but otherwise range won't be an issue on the routes I plan to drive. And I live in "Supercharger heaven", with six Supercharger stations* within Tesla range of my house in the mountains.
Because of the low miles I assume that the car won't have had a DU replacement, so I expect that I will face that someday. And it will be a major nuisance with the nearest Service Center 330 miles away, but I'll manage.
* Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Green River, Moab, Blanding, Farmington.
Jan 29, 2016
DougH I loved my 60, but the range anxiety got to me and I traded up to a P85.
Jan 29, 2016
dgpcolorado I've been driving a LEAF for 4+ years without range anxiety. Being an expert hypermiler and comfortable with energy units I don't anticipate problems. I expect that using rated miles as an energy proxy or Wh/mile consumption versus miles traveled/remaining will be pretty straightforward for me. The longest leg I face on any long trip is 147 miles with relatively little elevation change by Colorado standards (Tremonton, UT to Twin Falls, ID). It isn't a route that I do in winter.
I'm also perfectly happy to drive 65 in the right lane if needed, as opposed to going 80-85, as seems so popular among performance-oriented Tesla drivers. It is a different mindset; I just listen to audio books and chill.
Jan 29, 2016
DougH You will love it. Tesla's are so much funnier to drive than a Leaf.
Congrats!
Jan 29, 2016

pchilds You will be able drive at the speed limit again, I do now.
Jan 29, 2016
abasile Very happy for you! I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy your new ride.
For now, I'll be keeping myself content by reading of everyone's Tesla experiences here. My wife's preference is do a bit of long-postponed remodeling before we buy an expensive car. Since we pay cash for everything, this means waiting a bit longer (months, not years, thankfully).
Jan 29, 2016
DougH Love that more and more people are able to get into Tesla's.
Jan 29, 2016
dgpcolorado I really like driving the LEAF and it may well be more comfortable than the S, although that remains to be seen. I am looking forward to being able to take longer range trips, especially to Moab (about 145 miles) which I often do as a day trip or one-nighter. The back roads I use to get there are lovely and only used by a handful of locals.
I will really miss the heated steering wheel in the LEAF; I rarely use the heater here in sunny Colorado, even when it is 10 degrees F, so that isn't an issue for trips under an hour. I'm a thin-blooded Hawaiian so I dress warmly in winter but after three decades here I'm used to the snow and cold.
The S60 I am buying is basically the same "stripper" I would have ordered new (except that I would have liked a D for getting up my long steep driveway in winter; I'll get some cable chains for this car). It is white, has only 6000 miles on it and looks pretty new from the pictures. The idea was that even after a couple of years of driving it the car would still have some trade-in value, should I want to get a Model 3. Or I could keep it if I was happy with it. Not looking forward to driving a huge "land yacht" though. I do hope that I can fit my mountain bike in it without too much difficulty (I am tall so my bike is fairly large). So I am pleased that the S is a "liftback".
I have solar panels so I pay nothing for electricity (I've built up a 900 kWh credit over the years, so the extra electricity needed for the S, versus the more efficient LEAF, is covered). There are also Level 2 public charge stations at two of my main local destination cities. I use them so that people can see them getting used; EVs are still rare out here in the boondocks. [My grocery shopping trips are typically 70 miles round trip with 2500 feet of elevation change: it isn't suburbia. And all of my local driving involves steep hills, curvy mountain roads and significant elevation changes.]
And I am really looking forward to getting rid of my ICEV and going to just one car, a BEV, at long last.

Should be fun driving the S from Ouray over Red Mountain Pass, as you can well imagine!

DougH With the choices you gave yes. If it's a CPO Tesla is going to update the lower VIN somewhat. 60 are a blast to drive but, for me anyway, the range anxiety drove me nuts. The miles seemed to go down way to fast. And for me, an basic 85 is a no go.
I did search your price and there is a nice looking P85+, which gives you the power and the better suspension, might want to consider that.

andrewknight i just made this same decision a couple weeks ago and went with option C. I was originally going to go with option B but decided that the P was worth the $5k premium. For mid 50's you will get a lower vin build but it doesn't have to be a stripper you just have to be patient. On the VIN, I just finished driving a loaner for a week that was identical to my car except it was a year newer ~35k VIN. I honestly saw very little difference between the cars and was not at all disappointed in the direction I went. Good luck with the search!

Wshowell Thanks for the comments. I know you've had several S's so it's valuable. Funny, I'm literally in Manhattan right now on a business trip so this NY car has me thinking about the salt truck I saw dumping a ton of salt on Park Ave. gotta' be rough on any car. Walking back to my hotel tonight I passed a hotel "Roger Smith". The hotel has their own P85+ for chauffeuring their guests around right out front. How ridiculous is that purchase? A + with 21" to take someone to Times Square, Empire State, Central Park etc. someone uniformed basically checked every box possible when making the purchase for the hotel. A 60 would have been better for such things.
the link you provided is a sweet P85+. I'll be calling USAA to better understand how my rates will change depending on what I ultimately decide on.

Drucifer I did C, but fully loaded and somewhat more than $55k. You will have a tough time finding a P85 without a lot of options, since the original P85 buyers were not skimping on the rest of the car.
Jan 31, 2016
dhanson865 I'd go with A or B depending on color preference and options preferences and what A and B have.
Range isn't an issue for me and doesn't sound like it will be for you.
I'd specifically call Tesla and ask if any of your A or B options have the AP hardware and can have AP enabled. That alone would make me choose that car over one that didn't have that option.
Personally I'm avoiding cars that don't have that hardware though I could live without the software activated until sometime later, just so long as I have the software when I want to use it (given a couple hours or days, however long it takes to purchase the software upgrade).

HankLloydRight For a while, Tesla offered the "Tech Package with Autopilot" before they broke it out separately and made the Tech package standard. This was likely a car that didn't opt for the Tech package, and therefore doesn't have AP.
Only Inventory ("new") cars are eligible for the tax credits (except in CO). Most CPO cars are used and therefore not eligible for the credits. This car is clearly a used car.

Thus, this could be the previous owner didn't get the tech package, but Tesla activated AP as part of the certification process (like unlocking SpC on 60s). Just a guess though.

DougH How could you have such an amazing car without Tech. That's like having an ipod without headphones

Feb 1, 2016
HankLloydRight That's pretty much the only way this could happen, logically.
The problem still existed that this car didn't show Autopilot on the Tesla page, while it still had the option code for it.
Feb 1, 2016
Cyclone After some people found cars with different options, colors, or even models from the description page, I stopped putting faith in that. But of course, that was like 100 pages back, so recent viewers wouldn't know about that.

mkjayakumar Don't take the options listing in that page as gospel. Especially between tech package and AP. Just call a CPO advisor and ask. They would be able to find it for sure. Since these are in a service center, someone can walk over and confirm the options.
That was what happened in my case where the website listed mine as Tech Package with no mention of AP, but their internal records said AP. So someone walked over and confirmed that it had the hardware and also the software was enabled.

DougH That was fast!
Feb 1, 2016
irvineboy So just because it lists "TP", there could be a chance that it may have AP? Not having pictures makes it difficult.
Let's say it has the AP hardware. How do you know if previous owner activated it so buyer does not have to pay additional $3000 to enable it?
Feb 1, 2016
DougH Magical Unicorns are most likely not going to happen anymore. Tesla knows that AP is a wanted feature so it will most likely list all cars with it and activate it if it's not already activated. They can now charge a premium for it.

sitter_k F that was fast. I just checked hanks at 730pm too!

No2DinosaurFuel Thanks for listing the price. That is a pretty good deal considering it is about 70K or in usd. Add conversion fee and other taxes, it is not a bad deal for a 85D. Keep those prices rolling back!
Feb 2, 2016
DougH well when you can now buy a P85D for the same price or less, I'd rather get the P85D.

mkjayakumar Yes. Been driving it for a few days now and completely blown away by AP.
I have a 75 miles round trip commute and AP has definitely reduced my stress level quite a bit.
Feb 3, 2016
DougH Since this thread is moving at a snails pace is that a sign that CPO sales are slowing?

flankspeed8 Mildly sarcastic. X deliveries seem to be at a snails pace also. Seems like they are producing a lot but holding them at the SC for a qc check and some undisclosed/unknown repairs.
