Latest "Finalize your order" date part 3

My best guess is that his config perfectly matched an early reservation holder who cancelled after production started.
  • Nov 30, 2012

I don't think many reservations holders canceled while cars were in production or else they would be liable for some $$$$$
  • Nov 30, 2012
    gregincal
Not many, but it could definitely happen. You may have put 5K down (probably years ago), but when it comes time to pay for the whole car if you have lost your job or something you may still need to cancel. If you can't qualify for a loan you wouldn't have much choice.

Congrats, but no such luck for me. I called Tesla today about P4909 (85kWh, non-perf, 19" wheels, black/black/Obeche glossy) and was informed that January 2013 delivery is more likely than December 2012, since a VIN has not yet been assigned to my vehicle. It's difficult being patient after seeing all the great reviews published on the Model S, and particularly given the uncertainty regarding the Federal tax credit in 2013...

I still haven't heard anything official...perhaps I just had a more optimistic Tesla rep on that particular phone call. I'll definitely post if I get the official email or a VIN. I am mostly planning on a January arrival, but will be pleasantly surprised (and prepared with NEMA 14-50 or HPWC if it arrives) by a December delivery.

This is a business vehicle for me, so getting it in December means an extra $11,300 tax deduction for depreciation expense as well!

Darn....I paid the balance on my car two weeks ago and it didn't make it on the truck today.
I guess I will be looking at next weekend (or later) for delivery. I guess that I may end up being the last Sig delivered after all.

Oh well, I guess I'll go fishing.

I am not saying this applies to you ...

... but I just got off the phone with my DS - he said that there were some people who were finishing funding on Friday (today) and Monday. He mentioned Corpus and Houston as sites the truck was going to deliver. He stated mine would most likely be on that Tuesday truck with some CC and Hou car(s).

Take it as you will. I am, also, going to go cast a few with a nice fat Undercrown.

Anybody know how long it takes to ship a car from the factory to Seattle? Say it gets on the truck tomorrow morning (Sat). When would it arrive at the Bellevue store or Seattle service center (or my house)?

What would happen if someone RELIED on a loan?
They sign their paperwork ... with no VIN ... so you cannot apply for a loan before signing. Then you're turned down for a loan?

Mike, I was in the same situation and I emailed tesla today and they initiated an email that allowed me to complete the delivery details online. Now, more waiting but I got a vin and delivery window of 12/7-12/21.

They must be batching based on location. In order to get as many as possible delivered by Dec. 31

That's the only explanation why my P3385 got a VIN of 1708 and P3366 got a VIN of 1707 that I can think of. We are both within 30 miles of the factory. Now as to why he is getting his car delivered today and mine is still getting painted... No ideas there

I'm not a betting guy, but I'd guess you will be next to last.

This Signature reservation holder was a day or so away from delivery when he discovered that his Model S was involved in an accident.

By the way, I haven't received delivery of my Performance Signature either, and haven't received a firm delivery date yet. However, based on the fact that it is in transit I have tentatively scheduled my delivery party. So I'm hoping I will be spared the embarrassment of sending out a "NEVERMIND" message to all my guests.

Congrats to all the new vins and dates!

This quote from tesla forum is very telling:

Thanks for that info, as I just heard from a DS (DES?) tonight about finalizing paperwork and payment. I assume they're ready to ship mine ASAP, so that means I may have my car in less than 2 weeks? I'm trying not to get too excited!

Also, as a side note, this is not only exciting because of the car. My fiance is going to move in with me once I get the S, as she will be driving my current Prius. She works about an hour away and her current car both guzzles gas and is likely going to fall apart in the next 6-12 months anyways. I don't want her driving it for safety reasons. But I get a brand new car and a live-in pre-wife whenever it's delivered :)

@DouglasR: The distance is about 4 superchargers away (hint hint Tesla) or 828 miles . So that's about 12 hours by truck which is about 1.5 days at 8 hour driving days.

Actually, if you read the thread, the car was not totaled. It was damaged, but we don't know how bad it was. It couldn't have been too bad, because TM was in the process of sending it to the body shop for repair when the purchaser learned about the accident, made a fuss, and TM agreed to build him a new car. The original car will probably now be used as a demo.

    - - - Updated - - -

Walla2, I'm sorry about this, and I hope your emergency situation is resolved satisfactorily. I certainly don't want to benefit at your expense.

As for driving time to the Bay Area, we made the trip in October, and it was about 14 hours of driving. However, we didn't drive straight through: we left in the morning, stayed overnight, and arrived late afternoon the second day. A delivery truck will take longer, partly because of the lower speed limit, partly because there are some mountain passes where the truck simply can't go as fast, but mostly because the truck may make stops along the way to deliver cars to others. TM may have been making a special effort for you, walla2, by shipping it via a truck that will make no intermediate stops.

He even offered to buy it for his wife, for a discount. Apparently Tesla wasn't interested. ;)
  • Dec 1, 2012
    Shorty
Buddy lost all credibility with me when he stated he offered to buy the car at a discount for his wife after originally claiming that it was his wife who was insisting that they should not accept the car unless it was pristine. The car had a few scratches and a "baseball sized" dent in the fender. Happens every day cars are shipped. It gets fixed, looks new and nobody is ever the wiser. There is no requirement in any state or province that I know of to declare minor body work repairs on vehicles.

Heck Tesla can fix the car, advertise that they fixed the car and then still sell it within 24 hours on eBay for a $20K premium to list!
  • Dec 1, 2012
    brianman
I think the credibility reaction is a bit strong. While the expectation varies for the product type involved, for some people you simply don't pay full retail for an imperfect product. For a discount, people tolerate all kinds of imperfection.

I didn't see the details on how much of a discount was requested so I don't have a feel for whether the numbers were ridiculous.

I think he took the wrong approach though: Make the demand that his vehicle be perfect (rebuilt), but offer to buy the repaired vehicle at full price. This gets you double the bang for your reservation buck. ;)
  • Dec 1, 2012
    Tommy
That approach would work on a GP, however being a Sig, making a replacement without also eliminating the original damaged one's VIN would exceed the 1200 Sig cap.
  • Dec 1, 2012
    brianman
No big deal. Change the 3 metal pieces, twiddle the software, and update the VIN - now you've got your GP vehicle.

It gets a little more complicated if the vehicle was Sig Red...

I just spoke with a rep, who said my car (#5714 non-performance 85kw) should be ready for delivery by end of year or very early January.

Based on some of the things I've read in here, I asked him a few questions. His responses (some of which you already knew, no doubt):

    1. They are only building 85kw cars with active air suspension right now.

    2. He believes they are currently building somewhere around 200 cars a week, but couldn't put an exact number on it.

    3. There isn't a supply issue with 21" wheels as far as he knows.

I visited the Tesla store in DC yesterday and spent about three hours there hanging out (had some time between business meetings). The staff told me in no uncertain terms that production has now ramped up to 400 per week. They also said that the estimated delivery dates given when an order is finalized are now far more reliable then before. As I'm Feb/March I hope this is the case
  • Dec 2, 2012
    DrDave
I don't think it's obvious at all. They are ~ VIN 1700+ in Assembly. Take away 1100 VINS for Sigs and some marketing vehicles that were in the 1200 range, that gives roughly 600 vehicles at the 12/1 mark. Q3 call was on 11/5. Sounds more like they are right around 200/week of GP cars give or take with a few straggling Sigs left in, but it's a stretch to say well over.

And can we please stop using the staff at various stores to confirm production rate at the plant? It's been pretty obvious they don't have accurate information a lot of the time.

I'm not trying to be a downer but any illusions as to how many they are producing currently can lead to more people getting upset when their car isn't delivered by 1/1 or 2/1 or whenever, when the reality is Tesla didn't have the capability on 12/1 to produce 400 vehicles for the last month of the year.

T-minus 7 hours (or 8, or 9 depending...) until my Model S is delivered! I feel like an anxious father trying to have the baby room ready, everything in place. Woke at 6am for absolutely no reason and couldn't get back to sleep.

    All the normal parental worries:
-will she be perfect, or will there be flaws that weren't seen by the "doctor" prior to delivery'
-will the 5 minute APGAR (charge level) be OK or will she require stimulation before she's ready to breathe on her own?
-am I really ready for this, I feel so unprepared, what if I do something wrong, will she grow up to hate me? How do I know just how to charger her. Will I charge her enough, too much...what if I don't charge her enough?
-I don't want to spoil her, she needs to be humble so others aren't overly jealous, but I want her to achieve all she can.
-ultimately, I want greatness for her, a chance to inspire others, set an example and to have offspring to carry on her family name and all that stands for.

I'm a little confused by what you're trying to say. Production VINs appear to actually start around 1250, so that's actually more like 500. However, the first production delivery was announced less than a week ago. Either they were stockpiling them or they're producing a lot more than 200 a week. You can't have it both ways.

In which case DrDave's statement that "They are ~ VIN 1700+ in Assembly" is not accurate. They are ~ VIN 1700+ in deliveries, but we don't know how many cars have been produced and are sitting at the factory waiting for delivery. Chances are the VINs of the cars coming off the line now are considerably higher.

Before anyone uses this as the basis for profit estimates, it's clear that they're doing this with 2 shifts, not with 1.

Don't forget also that they have been producing some VIN 2xxx cars for Canada Sig's in parallel. (and soon we'll see a jump to >2200 when US jumps over the Canadian sig vin range)

If all cars were like mine, I'd completely agree. However, if you subtract all non-85kw cars and all non-active air suspension cars, it appears it does. I say appears, because until the car is in my garage, we're all guessing.

He did seem awfully confident, though.

Does anyone know if Performance 85kWh cars are being delivered before non-Performance (regardless of reservation number)? That what it seems like to me!

It seems to be the reverse. Most (not all though) of the folks getting delivery windows aren't perf.

I'm P524 and i still haven gotten an email about my delivery period.

Perf, 21" gray, Pearl White, pano roof, tan/carbon,tech,sound, active air, twin chargers,HPWC.

    Sorry to hear that...

Sounds like the curse of the 21" wheels or the revenge of the carbon fiber finish...

Who knows. Mine is a non-performance 85kWh with 19 " wheels and I was told by Telsa (with my initiating contact) that it should be the "end of the year."

Agreed . . . I spoke with a Tesla rep yesterday who confirmed that non-performance 85kWh cars are currently the type that are are being produced by the factory.

daripalli, I'm in the same boat. Reps have told me that nothing should be backing up my car though even though I suspect the cf and wheels. I really hope it's not true that they are not producing perf cars right now, but that would explain why I have no vin.

Since P5000 and below configured back in what August? any parts shortages should have been anticipated as they knew what was in the queue and what quantities of parts were needed. Of course, suppliers were probably in the dark as to what was need and when, giving Tesla, a "yeah right, you need how many by when?? good luck with that"

Since the deliveries we're seeing now, probably went on the production line 3-4 weeks ago, it's quite possible that the next few waves will be a slew of performance models then a more balanced perf and non-perf 85kw as supplies may no longer be constrained.

R456 (Perf, Grey, Black/CF, Pano, Tech, Air, Sound, Silver 21's, Armor, Single Charger, No Spoiler) has a VIN - 1459. On track for delivery window of 12/11-12/25.

The other thing to keep in mind is that Tesla may view the current volume of Perf/CF cars to be abnormally high - either due to early adopters tending towards those options vs folks who are reserving now and then there's the price increase which will probably steer some folks away from Perf/CF. If that's the case they would be foolish to invest in enough infrastructure or commit to suppliers to maintain this high level. Instead there will be shortages now but they'll smooth out once the order mix moves to where they expect it to be long-term.

Are they also prioritizing production of the pano roof or does it just seem that way since most people ordered this option?

Don't know if you are going to document any of your delivery, but I would be interested in your DS run through (all "x" hrs of it) as I will not have a DS and need to glean all I can. And have Joey make mine a Turkey sausage egg and cheese with regular coke, please.

My DES, Lee Holycross, is not going to be here for the delivery. He's flying in on Wed. Morning and I'll get me tour that day. Can do my best to record the "show". I'm not the best videographer (my talents are more in still work), but I'll do what I can.
