JPUConn Car is new to me as of last week - it's a CPO that was a one owner out of Denver. Service manager said my vehicle has the original battery and drive unit so January 2013 build.
After I got it I did range charge to 100% and drove down to about 18% before charging back up to 90 with no change to the numbers and then did a road trip so charged back up to 100% and did see 256 miles- maybe i need to do more reading on 'balancing'.
I've had the car plugged in just about all the time when home or at my destinations but that is not my intention going forward. There are a bunch of 30 amp GE Watt-stations at my work and I plug the car in at work every day and let it run up to the default 90% and will only plug in at home if I am going to need more range than it takes me to get to work (~50 miles one way) or on the weekend.

I have a service appointment next week. We will see what can be done to address this issue.

wdolson The battery may need conditioning. Try charging to 100% and then drive the car soon after (within an hour of getting to 100%). The charging circuitry conditions the battery when you charge to 100%. A lot of people see their range increase back to closer to original.

Now, I have been driving really carefully lately, obsessively keeping the Wh/mi as far below 300 as possible. Maybe this is the car's computer's way of saying it likes what it sees, so here's a little reward

jeffro01 Okay, now I'm convinced something is up with my battery\car... My 90% is now down to 248 which is barely over your 85 90% and nowhere near your 90D 90% of 269... Hell mine at 100% is only at 274 IIRC (been a bit since I charged to 100%)...
Tesla, either there is a difference in the 90 battery you're selling now vs the one you sold me last year, or my battery has a defect... Sadly I don't have the patience to make a big fuss about this to my local service center. Besides, they're likely too busy to care anyhow.

msnow Jeff, I've confirmed they changed the battery and part number sometime between February and April this year. I've seen screenshots of the battery sticker to prove it. I'm in the same boat you are as far as range loss just not quite as bad. The "theory" is these refreshed batteries are locked 100 kWh battery packs which accounts for the higher capacity at 90% and 100% but still only using 90 kWh of the battery. Pure speculation but it would explain what we are seeing. Time will tell.
Jul 1, 2016
2virgule5 Yes time will tell, including whether or not I'll see fast degradation on mine. Also, it is highly possible that those numbers factor other optimizations made to the car (less weight, better aerodynamics with refreshed nose etc). The same KWh would then give higher rated miles to reach the new EPA rating of 294 miles for a 90D.
Jul 1, 2016
msnow Except some of these batteries starting appearing before the refreshed cars.
Jul 1, 2016
jeffro01 Well that's a bummer... It's hard to get frustrated to the point of making noise as there isn't anywhere I go where range is ever going to really matter... On the other hand, I'm not getting the numbers I thought I was going to get... Or at least that's my perception..
I tried running the battery down to 0 but never could get it to the point of refusing to drive without the risk of backing out of my garage and not being able to get back in it again... I got it down far enough where the heater stopped producing heat... Charged back up to 90% and actually lost 2 miles of range... Go figure...

wdolson I have a refresh S90D that's approaching 2 months old. My 90% has been around 268-269 and if I drive carefully my actual range is a few miles below that. Since the last update it's changed a bit. The first time I drove it after the update, the range was only 264 and my actual range was around 250. When I got home, the HPWC wouldn't charge the car. It had red lights and the charging port turned red.
I finally turned off the breaker and rebooted the HPWC. After that I've been consistently getting 270 miles at 90% and the actual range running errands around town is almost exactly the same as the rated miles. I did 9.1 miles of in town driving today and it said I had 261 range left when I got home. I'll see what it does highway tomorrow, I have to go down to Salem, OR and back.

I range charged to 245 miles at 100% before I left. 90% was consistently 221 miles.
The lowest I got down to was 14 miles, and I did charge to 100% once more during the trip. I always beat EVTripPlanner's energy use, and often did better than range miles, even using AC driving 70 or 75.

Texas P85DL, current 90% Rated Range is 225. I always operate the car in Ludicrous mode. When I took delivery late in May 2015 and for several months thereafter, my 90% Rated Range was consistently 227 miles. By December 2015 typical 90% had dropped to 224. In 2016, the 90% dipped a few times to 223. It then gradually reversed the trend, holding steady at 224, then rising to 225 the last time I set 90%, a few days ago in late July 2016. Car has 7055 miles on the odometer. The 100% level also reversed its downward trend, rising from 249 earlier this year to 251 when I set a full charge a few weeks ago. When new, a100% charge would register 253 miles of range. The period when the mileage improved coincides with my decision to routinely charge only to 80%, which I dropped after a few months down to 70% routine daily charge. This may or may not explain why the range numbers improved. Last noted firmware change went to Firmware v 7.1 ( 7.1(2.24.86) installed around 062416

wdolson Your rated range probably started going up because you charged to 100%. It's good to charge to 100% once in a while if you're going to drive it right away. The batteries don't like to sit at 100% charge, but charging to 100% conditions and balances the battery pack. I am beginning to think that almost any P85D has better range than my P90DL regardless of mileage, including the ones we have out here. I have asked Tesla about it and they say it's normal and is calculated according to the configuration of my car and how I drive and the environment. My lifetime Wh/Mile is 341. guest Nov. 2015 Model S 70D with about 10500 miles, daily charged to 90%, and charged to 100% probably 8 times since taking delivery:
- 90% SoC seems to be settling around 214 rated miles (bounced between 215 and 214 when new).
- 100% SoC has been 236-238 rated miles (most recent 100% was 236, but the car has never charged higher than 238... even on its first 100% charge the week after we took delivery).
Putting things in perspective, this is worlds better than the Leaf that I had from 2012 through 2015... guest Interestingly my BMW i3 has actually gained a little range after two years. But BMW ships it with a buffer as there is a 22kWh battery of which only about 19kWh is available. That's also why it has full regen at a 100% charge. Sort of like owning a 60D that comes with the 75kWh battery.
But Telsa always wants to over promise and under deliver. When selling the car, they promote 294mi of range. In reality, after five months, it's more like this. 256 @ 90% = 284 rated miles (RM) @ 100%. But my car drops an RM for every 273W consumed, while actually averaging 303W/mi, so in reality I get 256mi of real driving range (273 / 303 = .9 * 294 = 256) in a car that is advertised as having 294mi of range. The reality is I get 13% less range than was advertised while my BMW is getting about 5% more than advertised.
Kinda funny how the math works out that my 90% charge is also my real world driving range with a 100% charge.

guest 90% is 248 miles after 4.5 months and 5,600 miles on my P90DL. Initially 252-254 in late May, but immediately dropped to 248 after a software update. Has remained at 248 since then. I always charge to 90% and keep in plugged in. It's been charged to 100% maybe 5 times and supercharged a dozen times. Normal charge is at 40 amps. Haven't done a 100% charge in several months.

guest It's one part the poor chemistry mix of the original Leaf pack (remember, the pack had two different chemistry cells to cut costs), lack of any meaningful thermal management (again, cost cutting), and the fact that it's brutally hot out here for much of the year (I live about 20 miles outside of Mojave, CA).

guest After 3 months and about 2500 miles, I'm still getting 268 @ 90%. Since the beginning it's been 268-269, it kind of bounces around. It will drop to around 266 if the car sits for a couple of days, but that's vampire loss.
I've never charged to 100%, but I guess that would be around 298 rated miles. I guess I got lucky and got a pack that, so far, hasn't degraded any.
The car has also been light on problems. There was a bit of red paint in the white under the frunk lid on delivery which they got rid of before I took it home and it appears the baffle for directing the air conditioning vents don't direct air up to the upper vents quite right. Cold air leaks into the passenger footwell when the A/C is on, much to my SO's annoyance. I'm taking it in today for that.

guest My 2014 Model S is at 185, and has actually been trending upward.

guest You just jinxed it with the "I guess I got lucky and got a pack that, so far, hasn't degraded any..." comment.

guest I am still at 235 rated miles at 90%. Now at 8,500 miles.
Now usually charging to 50% on a daily basis using HPWC with 131 rated miles.
Car usually plugged in.
The few times (once actually) that I got to 99% I was at 263 rated miles.
I have never gone below 15% and probably should one of these days.
When brand new in March 2016 I do recall 241 rated miles at 90%... so I have lost 6 miles on the P90DL.
It probably needs a balancing....

guest Update on my early 2013 S85:
90% - 223 Rated, 260 Ideal miles
100% - 248 Rated, 281 Ideal miles
I have an A-pack with about 73,000 miles on the clock.

guest Refresh P90D with approximately 2000 miles
7.1 (v2.28.19)
At 90%
rated range - 244
At 100%
rated range - 271
Not sure if range mode influences these numbers but they reflect it being off.

guest That's possible.

guest You're saying Tesla "always wants" to over promise but under delivers and you use range on a BMW i3 vs. Tesla as an example, as well as battery longevity?
Okay, whatever.

guest Report from our early 2013 (A-pack).
Interestingly, we live close (60 miles) to @mknox, so our cars have gone through similar weather conditions (winter, etc).
50000 miles (80000 km)
When charging from UMC:
90% 230 miles (371 km)
100% 256 miles (413 km)
When supercharging:
100% 259 miles (417 km)
These numbers haven't moved for the past year and 20000 km of driving.
We've supercharged a dozen times over the past year, and the few times we've done that to 100% the range registers as 417 km, and it takes about 5 km of driving for the range number on the dash to start dropping. Interesting behaviour which we don't see when charging at 24A on our UMC in the garage.

guest My Smart ED has a 17.6 kWh battery pack, and I actually have slightly more capacity than that based on the battery measurement done at my one and only visit to the dealership (to do the 20000 km maintenance) in the past 3 years. So my little sub $20K car is at least as good as the BMW i3 in that respect.
Let's put this in perspective :
My family has a Tesla that has only lost 3% range in 3.5 years 80000 km, and that is 410 km out of 425 km original range.
Whereas my Smart ED and your BMW i3 start with ~ 100 km range and have about that much now.
So you claim Tesla is under delivering on range?! Seriously.

guest Is the recommendation 80% charge nightly or 90%? Or does it depend on your daily driving habits? Anyone have any recs?
1/1/2015
guest If you know your driving schedule rather well, and it's minimal, then no harm in charging to 60% nightly. Then charge more if you know you are going to need the extra the next day. If your life is a little more....unpredictable, you can stick to the 80 or 90% charge nightly.
/edit Basically since I know my driving schedule rather well, I charge just as much as I need, keeping my car around 60-70% charged every day.

guest I took mine to the service center to check cold air leaking from the lower vents when the A/C is on. After they checked with engineering in Palo Alto, they found out it was working as designed, so they ended up doing nothing. I do wish they had talked to engineering before I had to drive all the way down there.
They said they didn't do anything to the car, but I just charged it to 90% and it says 271. It was 268 before I took it in. There was a minor firmware update while it was in the shop.
