You should have the announcement of the Hyperloop on this list. He said he's got both Tesla and Space X engineers working on it, so its def related to T.M.
Apr 2, 2013
Benz I hope that the announcement is related to technology development (battery technology, or Supercharger technology, or Hyperloop technology, or electric airplanes, etc.)
But I am afraid it will be more related to financial/economical/market/stocks aspects.
By the way, I like the picture of the pickup.

erha The hyperloop would really be "putting his money where his mouth is", but I really don't see how it is relevant to tesla. I just hope it isn't battery swapping. That would be way expensive, but it could be something users would have to pay for
Apr 2, 2013
Hasse Although I want to see a combined hyperloop/supercharger deployment as much as the next guy, it seems pretty obvious that it has to be something that increases Elon's or Tesla's risk but reinforces the electric car business case.
Such as:
-Battery buy-back guarantee
-Tesla Leasing plan
-"Half and half": Buy the car, rent the battery
or possibly some kind of x-prize, related to electric transportation and sponsored by Tesla/Elon.
Apr 2, 2013
WarpedOne Battery swapping is a direct competition to superchargers. Now that they've committed to supercharges, battery swapping is out of the question for general public.
Hyperloop is plausible, rocket engineers would come handy and Elon has them. I doubt he has enough $ to make it happen though.
I think he is investing into some battery business with novel chemistries.

napabill Seems like a pretty good bet this is the announcement this afternoon. I'm betting Tesla is underwriting Project 100 in some fashion, thus putting their money where their mouth is.
Apr 2, 2013
DrJohnM My thoughts...
Elon has noted in the past that the Tesla plug is much better than the competition, however, it does not support (in its current form) three phase charging. He noted at the Norway meeting a few weeks back, that they had a solution for three phase charging and that the charger is more efficient than the US model. He also noted an ability to plug into CHAdeMO chargers. I wonder if the 'announcement' is a revamp to the charging scope to include Mennekes Type 2 and CHAdeMO. I do not know if it is the case in the USA, but I assume that a lot of business (fast food outlets, shops etc) already have three phase delivered to them and it would be a relatively simple process to provide a three phase Mennekes plug.
There are apparently 160 CHAdeMO chargers already installed in the USA - access to those would be an instant increase in 'fast charging' facilities for Tesla owners.

riceuguy Or perhaps we're all thinking about this the wrong way. What if to AUGMENT the supercharger strategy--which is all about intercity driving--they were installing HPWCs at chains like Starbucks? For in-city driving, it would be great to get a 25-50 mi/hr. boost (should I have ordered the twin chargers?!) every once in a while. Would really be nice to see 20-30 of those things around town. The local Tesla store is at my favorite shopping center here, and it's great to have the option to charge while you shop (and get the best spot in the garage while doing it!).

mitch672 Someone over at "MyNissanLeaf" just posted he received an email from Tesla that he will have more information on his leasing question later today, so it's partly about a leasing program at a minimum.

Arnold Panz It does fit the bill because lease rates in particular are predicated on favorable residual value at the end of the lease term. If Tesla were to offer really good leasing rates (i.e., better than any ICE car at the same price point), it would be Elon "putting his money where his mouth is" in terms of being better than ICEs and holding their resale value etc. I think it's either this or swappable batteries, and would put my money on this because an affordable lease rate opens the car up to people who could otherwise not afford the car. That's the kind of game changer hinted at in his other tweet (this is more consequential than Q1 profitability).

jdevo2004 Looks like it is a leasing strategy. The Project 100 being part of the announcement as the first of the leases.
Apr 2, 2013
Arnold Panz Wouldn't Costco and/or Wal-Mart want to be part of that announcement, or do you think they'd just let him make the announcement whenever he felt like it? It's for this reason that I don't think it has anything to do with "partnering" with any big company about anything -- given the context and quick movement of the announcement, it implies no coordination, and a joint announcement would require some level of coordination with the other party (especially a company as big as Costco or Wal-Mart, but this applies to almost anyone like a hotel chain or Starbucks etc.).

Apr 2, 2013
Jcmason ADN_ModelS - I'm with you: it's most likely a partnership with either McD or (preferably, from a brand point of view) SBUX to expand the charging network quickly without needing to negotiate one site at a time. Superchargers on highways, regular HPWC's in town, captive audience for the restaurant partner and addressing the main concern holding back broader adoption of EV's (range). I'm guessing there was a whiteboard session right after the Broder saga, where Elon, George and team went through alternatives to win back the lost orders/market cap and address the range anxiety concern. I'm sure they would have identified the need to address this head on, ie both the charging infrastructure buildout and the perception issue. It may also include the improved charging speed that has been discussed previously. This would fit with an investment by Elon/Tesla (putting his money) where we all go to eat (where his mouth is), and the "Restaurant at the end of the Universe" would seem to further confirm that.

ModelS8794 If "money where my mouth is" is taken literally, I would guess it would be Elon capitalizing a new leasing company and using it to offer leasing terms at more competitive rates than he has been able to negotiate with traditional lessors thus far. Musk obviously does not have the capital to single-handedly provide a balance sheet for a full scale leasing program, but does have the capital required to provide the equity backing up a specialty finance company focused on Tesla leases. The question then becomes, who provides the debt capital, and on what terms? Elon would presumably be taking a more significant risk with the equity capital, but likely sees a Model S offering a residual value far in excess of what other lessors might be willing to use in their own calculations, and there lies his opportunity, and risk.
Here's what Musk said re: leasing on the last earnings call:
Leasing. So all of the sales and all of the things that I mentioned thus far are with 0 U.S. -- 0 North American leasing. So we don't even offer leasing in North America, that is something that we do want to offer maybe second half of the year but we want to make sure that the terms of the lease like interest rate and all that are compelling. Even if we did 0 leasing in North America, we could still sell all of our productions here. So leasing is entirely optional for us at this point and we only want to come out with the leasing product that's compelling. We don't want to come out with a kind of a lame leasing product, and we are talking with some of the major financial institutions in the world about doing leasing and those talks are progressing in a good direction, that in order for us to get the best rates for our customers -- I mean, we're not really interested in making much incremental money with leasing but we want to make sure we get a good deal for customers. It's important for the -- those big financial institutions to feel really comfortable with Tesla and that's why -- and one of the reasons that could be helpful for us to be profitable this quarter and possibly, quarters is to give greater confidence to the large banks in giving us -- for our customers a good leasing interest rate, and I guess that's usually comforting to the big financial companies. And I do see long term, not so much this year, I think this year leasing is going to comprise a small percentage of our volume. But I do think next year leasing will be a big factor. And within Europe, it'll be at least a moderate factor this year. We already have a significant leasing deal signed with Athlon, which is one of the major European leasing companies.

JakeP I thought for sure this was going to be the crux of the original September 2012 supercharger announcement, since it solves so many SC issues at once (leasing the land, parking access, what do do while charging, how to make money while people are charging, etc.). It would be nice to see it today, especially if it rapidly accelerates the rollout of SCs...and I mean ten or twenty new sites a month, with full coverage across the US by end of the year.

WarpedOne @ModelS8794:
Thanks for the spotlight, so it is not a leasing program.
Now what? I really can't confidently put my finger on anything suggested so far.
Tesla/Elon to repay DOE loan. -- nonsense, throwing away good money on nothing.
Tesla stock buy-back/Elon to take TSLA private. -- again, what is there to be gained with even more money right now? Tesla is well funded as it is.
Official announcement of Gen3/Bluestar. -- Only few weeks ago it was pushed back into 2017
Tesla to set up additional production in Europe. -- Possibly, but again why? Factory is huge investment, Model S is selling like hotcakes in Europe already. Why sped more money this way while only using 10% of Fremont capacity.
Tesla/Elon to set up financing/leasing program. -- Elon says financing is not a problem yet i.e. nothing to be gained.
Google/Apple to work with Tesla. -- work on what exactly?
Completion of 10,000th Model S. -- This is news? Really?
Expansion of the Supercharger network. -- Nothing new about it. Did they say the current SC is all they are building? The plan is a SC every ~120 miles.
Elon to literally "eat" his fortune. -- ...
Apr 2, 2013
Jcmason Yep, exactly. I think this is the only one that really works. There are lots of other good ideas here, but they all have too many reasons why they don't fit with this announcement. For example, acceleration of GenIII just isn't going to happen. Leasing, while important at some point, would just accelerate demand, which isn't the main focus at the moment, since they're production constrained and also doesn't fit with Elon's categorization as potentially more important than the profitability announcement yesterday. Now, the question in my mind is - just how big of a positive would the expansion of the charging network be?
Apr 2, 2013
Krugerrand Yes, I understood perfectly that 'YOU' would be bored. Just stating a fact in response that there are a lot of 'other' people who wouldn't be bored. That's called participating in a discussion and offering another POV. Do you require me to send you another hug?
As far as I can see, watching the share price of Tesla rise, the hype has totally been worth it to someone.
Apr 2, 2013
ModelS8794 I dunno, I think leasing-related is the best guess, it's what I would bet on (given good enough odds!)It's April already, if he wants to have a program "in the second half of the year" then now would be as good a time as any to announce its formation.

Apr 2, 2013
Jcmason ElSupreme, good insight, and I agree that signing the agreement doesn't mean the equipment is going to be available immediately, but at least it's a start, and my understanding is that one of the main holdups with the current SC rollout is the real estate negotiation one site at a time.

Krugerrand That's only if everyone else thinks like you, which they don't.
Apr 2, 2013

Elon providing the capital to accelerate production beyond current 25k annual rate, maybe 1000/week in the second half of the year?
Apr 2, 2013
michaelwb I wonder if it's going to be something along the lines of "Model S is the best-selling EV in the U.S. in the month of March." Nissan sold 2,236 LEAFs in March; at 500 per month, it's possible that Tesla beat that just by a few units.
Apr 2, 2013
JakeP Yes, good point ElSupreme...but this type of agreement would certainly let them accelerate where they already want to locate SCs, if not necessarily at every franchise site. Personally I vote for Chipotle, they seem very green and I would rather eat there than McDs!
Apr 2, 2013
ModelS8794 I think when we get the numbers in for March we will find that Model S is the best selling full-size luxury sedan in the US in March and for the entire first quarter. That would be something Elon would promote above and beyond any comparisons to LEAF or Volt or etc. which I don't believe he really thinks is the real competition.

jvonbokel I think you'd be surprised. Ever heard of "The Millionaire Next Door"? The main premise is that the majority of high net-worth individuals are not actually exceedingly high-salary individuals, but rather average folks who live beneath their means. I think a good portion (~40%, I'd guess) of Model S owners that fit that description.
That said, I don't think today's announcement will involve Walmart, or any other retail/restaurant chain either.
P.S. I count myself among that "good portion" of Model S owners. My last car was a '97 S-10 pickup. Granted, I'd gotten some raises in the last few years, and had set my sights on a Mustang, but I still nearly doubled my budget to accommodate the Model S.

SteveG3 At this point it seems leasing and/or a deal for restaurant/charging stations sounds most promising (thanks for those who explained the twitter clue).
I'm still going to mention what I'd love to see as Tesla putting money where mouth is: Announce due to strong demand, production targets up 5,000 this year and next. Earnings from this to fund the ongoing buildup of service centers, rather than needing money from service contract of Model S owners. As a result, Elon putting money where his mouth is by waiving service contracts. Press and analysts called in, announcement built up to, so Elon can publicly back past statements that a Tesla EV is far less costly to maintain than an ICE... we'll foot the bill the first 8 years.
wouldn't it be awesome if it was $0 maintenance first 8 years, AND free supercharging. I ran numbers in my head, I see increased sales of 5M/year easily paying for this (given prices costs and prices could be adjusted in 5 years or so when newer battery tech goes into S/X).

DriverOne Totally agree. Having the SCs inter-city alone is not much help - you need them at your destination too. Lets say I drive to the beach (200+ miles away) and stay for a week. The SC half-way there will get me to the beach, but I also need a top-up during the week's stay. SCs are needed at destinations, too. Looking forward to this reality!

nsmyth The website was taken down over an hour and a half ago with a splash page saying tesla motors will return shortly... I am thinking its related to the announcement. a new website launch at same time, this may be bigger than most thought.

Silenus136 Glad I am not the type to say "I told you so," but it is leasing at $500/mo. Man, I really wish I had waited and not bought! Expensive error...
. It seems to have been nothing... there are still references to the 40kWh battery up there.
