Tesla moments part 13

My Tesla moment was all my own this week. AP drove me seamlessly through rain, sleet, hail, and snow flurries from San Diego to Las Vegas. I hate driving at night these days, but my Cris and AP got me into Vegas safely and I only had to handle the last mile or so off the freeway. Thank you, Elon!

I've had other moments where people have ogled the car and I have enjoyed extolling her merits, but frankly what she does for me now that I have AP is moment enough! I cannot imagine the next iteration...but am ready for it!

Just came home from my first "road trip", really just a few hundred miles, but long enough. Oh my, I had no idea how incredibly stupendous autopilot could make mind numbing traffic. No tension. Just relaxing, full of gratitude. And then! Supercharging! Free fast electrons?! That was ridiculous. I think the family will be flying less...

Indeed! Last time we flew to LV and it was such a drain. So much time and energy to get to the airport, fly, get on the rental car bus, get in line to get the rental car. This last trip in the T with free electrons and AP and having time to stop along the way and eat, and shop (especially this time of year) while she charged her battery, was just perfect.

I took a friend to the Nissan dealership to scope out the SUV she was thinking of buying. I asked the salesman how many of these Nissan Rogues I could get if I traded in the Tesla. Then of course, I had to give him the quick tour of the Tesla. And he nabbed the owner of the dealership and dragged him over so he could get a look too. The owner decided that if I traded in the Tesla, that would have to be his personal driver for a few months.

I'm not trading in the Tesla.

    (first TMC post!)

Waiting in the prescription drive-thru line (2 lanes), I put the car in park. I hear yelling from the car next to me:

"Hey! How did you do that?!?"
    Me: (totally oblivious) "Do what?"
"what you did to your door handles? They popped out!"
Me: "Oh! It does that when I put the car in park. They'll pop back in when I put it in Drive"
"what kind of car is that?"
    Me: "It's a Tesla!"
"<hint of sarcasm> Oh! A Tesla! Of course!" (but continued to rave to her friend in the car "hey! that's a Tesla!")

Being in California/Silicon Valley, I thought everyone would have seen a Tesla by now. Guess not.

Took my wife's BMW 335d to the dealership service department (third time, same diesel related problem, but that's a different story). Getting processed for a loaner car, the loaner car guy looks at my auto insurance card, does a double take when he sees "Tesla" on it, and then gets really excited and starts asking me a gazillion questions about my car. He knows all about the direct sales model, and he believes that this, and electric cars in general, are really the future. I just hope he didn't get too distracted to do the loaner paperwork right, oh well, I'll find out tomorrow when I get her car back (I hope...the 328i I got as a loaner isn't bad but I'd way rather be driving my Model S).

I'm the proud owner of a Model S 85D that was delivered Dec 17th in Tilburg, was transported by truck to my garage where it entered on Dec 23th, a great Christmas present. This is Other Europe, procedures differ a bit from the standard delivery.

Christmas day, my family does not know I bought the Model S, and I say to all of them after all the presents were opened:
    - You all know I am crazy about Tesla so I bought two small Teslas, one for me and the other for Isabel (my wife). - and I show them the two fobs...
My sister-in-law takes one fob in her hands, feels the clicks on the top switch of the fob and says:
    - How cute, this is a remote for a small electric car, isn't it? Where is it?
    - Let's go to the garage and see how small it is...
    She starts to freak out,
    - did you...? you didn't... what did you do?! It's a small one, it has to be...
    - Let's see...
And she completely went crazy, with all other family members, when they saw the car in the garage :) that cute little remotely controlled car... A 5 meters long car :) our brand new Model S 85D!

Starbucks barista this morning: "Hey, today is the first day I saw you drive up. Your car is awesome."
Me: "Thanks very much, I love it too."
Barista: "I drive a Prius, because I can't afford your car."
Me: "They are supposed to sell a more affordable one in a few years. You're still cutting way down on gas use and pollution in the meantime."
Barista: "I knew you were cool."
Me: "uhhhhh, thanks" (I'm smooth like that)

I have had a bunch of Tesla moments just this week.

    1. Guy at Sonic delivers my food (don't judge me), skates a few feet away, stops and turns around. "Gorgeous car, by the way."

    2. Guy walks by it in a parking lot as I'm about to get in. "Hey, that car is beautiful! Is that a Tesla?" 10 minutes of TeslaTime ensues while I go over all the features of the car.

    3. Girl at a drive through (still not judging!) looks at the door handles and says "How do you get in?" So I hit the park button to present the door handles. "How did you do that!?"

    4. Registering for the car show at Quaker Steak last night one of the guys asks if my Tesla is the ludicrous version. I say no, it's just a standard model but will still beat most everything in the parking lot. Then the other guy asks if mine is the car that caught fire in Norway yesterday. I answer "No, my car did not catch fire in Norway yesterday. It is here."

4a. I finally won a trophy with my own car at Quaker Steak. My previous win was with a Service Center loaner so I gave them the trophy.

    5. Tonight I make a quick stop at the grocery store and park way out by myself in the "Tesla Parking." I come out to find a car stopped at an odd angle next to it. Two ladies in a GM crapmobile want to know what kind of car it is. "She thought it was a Buick." Oy vey. 3 more minutes of TeslaTime while I explain about the company and the car because they had never heard of it at all.

I'm always amazed as so many people have never heard about Tesla in USA yet. Here in Europe, it's not a surprise, but in the USA, it shocks me every time I read such comments here in this thread.
I think a lot of people, when they see the car in the road, confuse it with some Jaguar, Maseratti, or a sort of weird GM trade brand or Japanese one. Nothing really distinguish a Tesla Model S in a parking slot of other cars, and a lot of owner, sure, prefers that.
But with the spreading of Model X in the roads and, above all, in malls when owner will go to shopping or when mums will drop their kids at school, a lot of people will, at last, know about Tesla.
Sure, we will see a lot of "X" moments in this forum. At some point maybe these "X" moments will be put in the X thread, but as I'm not a Tesla owner (so unfortunately :crying:), I will let the honour to open such a "X" moments thread to a Tesla X owner.

Normal Saturday running errands, shopping and lunch. Walking back to the car after lunch couldn't help noticing this gentleman very close to my car, circling around looking in the Windows, even clearing a dropped leaf from the screen. I slowed down to give him space but it was clear he was not going anywhere. Had to give a loud 'hello' so I could wake him from his attentions and get past him to the drivers side. "Beautiful car" he said adding that he drove one in Hong Kong followed by a short and slightly awkward conversation. Then suddenly he was gone, so we got in and I put it in gear, looked over my shoulder to pull away and spotted him on the other side of the street still staring. Pulled away thinking I was very lucky to own this car, if I hadn't put the effort into saving up for it I would have been the guy on the other side of the road.

I just had a great one testing new 7.1 features. I used perpendicular autopark outside a local apartment building. Then I got out and tested "summon" to pull it out of the space. Worked great. After it was done, I looked up and noticed two people who were chatting outside the building and now had their jaws on the ground. Totally derailed their conversation. "What kind of car is that?!" And the typical conversation ensued. Too funny!

Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding this, but Summon works when it's not just in a home garage? Aka out of a parking spot?

I would guess that Summon will work in parking lots, but not on public roads.
  • Jan 9, 2016
    mikeash
Summon is basically just the ability to use the key fob to move the car forwards or backwards up to 40ft, with some intelligence avoiding obstacles. It seems to work anywhere. The release notes warn that it should only be used on private property, but I think that like the "hands always on the wheel" warning with autosteer, this is not actually enforced.

It should be great for cases where somebody parks very close to your driver's side door, for example.

Quaker Steak & Lube does a "Classic Car" show every Thursday night. Pretty much, if you want to pay $5, then you can show your car. Sometime there are some nice muscle cars end generally a few older restorations. They give out a whole bunch of trophies for "cars of merit" but not in any particular categories. This week I saw a much bigger trophy for the best car of the night, but hadn't seen that before. To be fair, we're usually inside eating when they call the winners outside, or we're by just generally not paying attention. So we may have racked up a few more trophies that we didn't collect. Btrflyl8e has 2, FLDarren has one or 2, I think Great Dane has one, and MaxK received one for the awesome Model X this week.

A friend's cow-orker has four sons (Ages ranging from about 10 to 16). When they heard about the Tesla, they all had to see it. Of course I had to offer them a little test drive. They had all the best questions to ask, were very knowledgeable about the car and Elon. We did a clown-car picture so they can show their friends.

One of the VERY rare times my younger one convinced my older one to sit in the rear facing seats.

Leaving the store, kids close the trunk, and this woman looks like she saw a ghost, walked past us, went to her car with her friends and I overhear her say "I think they forget their kids in the trunk".

My wife starts to pull out of the space, and the woman with the faceless expression runs over, knocks on our window and says "umn... I THINK your kids are in the trunk". My wife, says "I know". The woman goes "o? You know? ok...." and starts walking back to her friends.

I yelled out the window "there are seats back there". I would've showed her the seats to ease her concern, but we had 15 mins to get to the next store before it closed.

Hopefully the cops won't be paying me a visit later...

As I started walking into work from the back of the parking lot this morning, I crossed paths with someone who worked in one of the neighboring auto supplier buildings. He got my attention and said "I like your Model S. I haven't seen one in Michigan yet." I replied that there aren't many and thanked him and we continued on our ways.

Time permitting, I drag people into the car and show it to them; give them a ride; sometimes even have them drive. Usually accompanied by a chant of the form, "you can get this as a sedan, as an SUV, and in 2017 as a compact sedan for the average price of a new car except LESS because of the federal tax credit". :) It's impossible to quantify so I'm just going with my hunch that every friendly owner engagement now translates into someone giving serious consideration to a new Model III in 2017/2018 or a used/CPO III in 2019/2020.

    Alan

P.S. Really, REALLY hard to resist the setup line, "ok, you've been in a golf cart, right, this is electric just like that, so please just take a deep breath and be patient with me as I attempt to accelerate", and then WHAM! Even in an ancient, dirt-slow P85+, it's a winning move! :)

Great moment today. I parked at a gas station to pick up Powerball Tickets for an office pool and saw a guy parked about to take a pic of my car when I was walked back outside. He looked embarrassed and asked if he could take a picture. I invited him over to sit in the car and ask questions.

I guess this is a good place to put this. After getting 7.1, I found a use for summon!

I just got home from work, and I was excited to try out summon. Unload the kids out of the car, and as we're going home, I turn on the summon feature and have the car back out down the driveway. Best one yet for me:

I was waiting at the light at a freeway exit. A homeless guy starts asking me about the car, is it a Tesla, and oh, wow, it's the first one he's ever seen. (I was in far south SD, so I believe him). Started then to tell me that he's so happy Tesla is getting some love with these beautiful cars. "Tesla discovered electricity, you know, not Ben Franklin or any of those others."

Gotta love the CA homeless pop. So much smarter than I.

Not sure I knew who Tesla was before the damn car came out. My secret is out.

EDIT: Btw, I did not mean to imply here that Tesla "invented" electricity. I was just amazed that the homeless man knew so much about Tesla, the man.

    My Tesla Moment for 2015 Happened around 12:30 a.m. Jan 1 2016

I hope people won't see this as self-serving... some of you may know that a nonprofit my wife co-founded, Climate XChange (focused on getting revenue-neutral carbon-fee-and-rebate legislation enacted in Massachusetts), held a raffle from Sep 26 2015 - Dec 31 2015, with the drawing taking place around 12:05 a.m. January 1 2016. The Grand Prize winning ticket was drawn first, so that all tickets had a shot at winning, then saved in an envelope and announced after the other 5 prizes were drawn and announced. The winner was Al Nierenberg of Boxford, MA:

Grand Prize Winner - Al Nierenberg.jpg

Here's a picture of Al's wife Catherine, Al, Jessica (President of Climate XChange) and myself:

Grand Prize Winner - Al & Catherine Nierenberg, Jessica, Alan.jpg

While the whole thing was about awareness for Carbon Pricing, and for raising funds for Climate XChange, and the moment really belonged to Catherine & Al, I confess that this was also MY personal tip-top Tesla moment for the year! Turns out that Al & Catherine have a Prius with >200,000 miles on it, held together with spit (the baling wire has corroded through, apparently), and they've been wondering what they can afford to replace it with. They tell me that they could NOT have imagined buying a Tesla were it not for winning it and winning the goodies and tax payments we built into the "No Pain" raffle. Turns out that they have a solar system on their house and they will configure slightly less than the maximum Tesla configuration we allow ($103K-$110K depending on how you look at it) and get a Powerwall for their solar system along with the car. They figure they can generate enough energy for house and car plus some extra back to the grid for at least 8 months out of the year.

As you might imagine, I feel pretty damned good about this! And you might also imagine how grateful I feel to all the ticket purchasers, who made a huge leap to take a chance on the raffle and to support carbon pricing and Climate XChange!

    Alan

P.S. I'm just now catching my breath after all this; a lot of paperwork and loose ends to tie up, and still far from caught up; including email and social forum responses I still owe to people. But while I'm posting this, I'd also like to shout out to Doug and Daniel, the Tesla Motors Club co-founders, who spent hours on the phone with me talking about various issues and specifically about carbon pricing and the forum and Teslas. It's pretty incredible what these guys have built -- Tesla Motors Club -- and I wonder how many people know just how much a labor of love this forum is for them and just how little money is in it for them regardless of the love. I certainly didn't know some of this backstory until I spent time with them late last year. If you're not already a paid supporter of teslamotorsclub.com, you might think about doing just that. They've created a forum that could be described as one gigantic, on-going "Tesla moment". :)

The car is just too doggone quiet.

While driving though a typical suburb, I saw teens/tweens playing in a driveway. One youngster starting to push another sitting on a skateboard. As I approached, I slowed from 20mph to 5 mph but they kept pushing - into the street. I came to a complete stop and waited about 10 feet from the driveway. The kids finally noticed me waiting and vacated the street. I shook my head but then remembered that they couldn't hear the car.

This reminded me of a very early Tesla moment: I work very late shifts most days and will usually come home between 2-5am. In my old Infiniti FX45, the V8 engine was enough to alert our German Shepherd that it was me coming in. The first month of driving the Tesla, he woke everyone up with his burglar-bark in the wee-hours when I'd come in. Now, I call out his name so he knows it is me. It would have been an unusual deal-breaker for the hubs.

Had an odd moment last week.

Was heading home late in the evening and decided to pick up something quick from the drive-thru at Wendy's. Behind me in line was big ol' pickup truck from maybe the early 80s with some loud rumbly motor under the hood. As I'm at the window waiting to grab my food, he revs his engine a few times while in park. Not sure why he did it (don't think it was a sign of aggression, we were sitting in a line afterall) maybe just trying to warm it up it was a cold night.

Anyway, the gal in the window turns back around at me and say "Nice Tesla, I hear ya revin' that engine." The engine comment took me a bit by surprised so kinda stuttered "Wasn't me, this car is silent."

Just struck me as odd that she recognized the car as a Tesla, but didn't realize it didn't make those kinds of noises. Just a reminder that not everyone gets as much exposure to these cars as we're used to, still a pretty rare occurrence for most people to get up close with one... which is why I'm always happy to chat with people when they have questions.

Maybe she saw the 60 minutes episode where they added fake engine noises to a Tesla provided video sequence, because the producer always does that for such clips.

This isn't really unique to electrified vehicles; pure ICE cars can be pretty damn quiet at low speed, too.

There's already a legally mandated safety system to address the problem, though. I believe it's called a "horn".

There's a post somewhere on TMC from a guy who didn't want to startle people in parking lots with the horn so he installed a chime behind the nosecone. Now they just hear a gentle "ding-dong" to let them know of his presence.

There's still tire noise. If you're going above 25mph, you can hear the Tesla about the same as a regular ICE.

In a parking lot where you're going slow, if the person doesn't hear me, I come up close to them and move my steering wheel left and right a few times, that usually catches their attention (I'm sure there'll be people who tell me that moving my steering wheel left and right going 2mph is dangerous to my suspension, yadda yadda, I don't care).

I'm having a new roof put on my house today. This morning as I was pulling out, the roofer had to move his truck to let me by. As I pulled up, he looks astonished and struggles to tell me that my car isn't making noise in extraordinarily limited English. I broke out my high school Spanish and explained that it was un auto electrico. He adopted an overly optimistic attitude towards my language competance and fired off a three sentence question. I wasn't really sure what he asked, but I figured the questions were the same in every language, so I assumed it was a range question and I told him "doscientos cuarenta y dos milles" and he looked impressed and satisfied, so I guessed the right question. The optimism included in Tesla's range calculations was beyond my ability to explain, so I pointed to the 911 and advised him that the Tesla was much faster. He looked about 50% impressed and 50% sceptical.

    Cue Mommy Tesla grin.

Edit: Found the video! (mod- sorry if posting competing commercial is in violation. Feel free to remove. Although in my mind, there is no competition.)

Stopped at a traffic light, my front bumper was about even with the driver's seat of the truck to my right. A auto parts jobber truck, with a young guy driving. He did the classic double take after he happened to glance to his left and caught a glimpse, then began craning his head around to see anything that would identify the car. He didn't look at me once, just kept searching his field of vision for a clue as to what this car might be. The look on his face was one of complete confusion and annoyance that he, a Car Guy, had no idea what he was looking at.

Probably good that he didn't look directly at me because I was having a good laugh at his expense.

Driving down the 280 to the South Bay, in the left lane, I spotted a red Roadster coming from behind. The driver was clearly having a great time, as he was drumming away to a song on the steering wheel.
I moved over to let him by, and we both admired each other's ride while he passed me.

He gave me giant smile and nod of approval, and I pointed to him to send that back his way. Am a big fan of the Roadster.

Our Tesla moment is one of "missing our car". We are in Auatralia while our Tesla is parked in our Canadian garage. Every opportunity we get, we visit the Chadstone Shopping Centre where a Tesla is on display. We always stop by; talk to the staff and many times potential customers. It gives us our Tesla fix while we are away.

Before I actually bought my tesla I really enjoyed the idea of being the first tesla on the block and street where we live. One day as I was driving home I saw an S parked 2 houses down. Horror. Someone beat me to the punch. When I got home my wife told me that someone must have died and that there was a shiva going on in that house. At that moment I had a George Costanza/Larry David moment. What if I went over and said "sorry for your loss, btw that tesla outside belongs to one of your guests right? And not you guys?

this is all in jest so don't hate or judge. Admittedly the thought did enter my mind ever so briefly but I would have never actually done it.

Back in 2014, there was an event at the high school I graduated from and as I pull up I'm stunned to see that I'm parking in back of another Model S. As I look at it closer, I'm even more shocked to discover it's a Sig! I was pretty hopeful that I was the first graduate to get an MS so I spent the entire evening trying to find the owner of the Sig. They left before I had a chance to meet them, but I've convinced myself that it was a parent's car. At least that's how I got to sleep that night :)
    You are not alone.

One full month of owning the Model S 85D. Every single day something happens due to the fact that there aren't a lot of Teslas around these parts. Today, passing by, kids shout "LOOK! IT'S A TESLA!"
At IKEA, while charging, lots of people staring. Tried to engage and explain. The majority ran away. One Chinese person says no to engaging in conversation but gets closer and closer to listen to the explanation I am giving to my friend on how the D has two motors, where they are located and how good and fabulous the car is. The Chinese person gets so close that it really is a bit embarassing. Hope he got all the info.

Here's a different sort of Tesla moment: my bf and I met another Tesla owner, LoL Rick, in downtown St Pete for dinner last night. Rick loves to refer to the color of my "old blue" Tesla as "blackish", because it annoys me. We both had to park a few blocks away from the restaurant, so after walking a bit, Rick casually gestures to the left and says " look, a black Tesla ". Note, I see a black Tesla nearly every time I go downtown, so I glance at it and reply, " yeah, i see it every time I come down here", at which point Rick starts laughing hysterically and yells "THAT'S YOUR CAR!!!"

    DAMMIT.

Was at a high-performance toys store yesterday, buying a Polaris EV ATV for the farm. I gave the salesguy a ride and the store owner walks by, so he gets roped into the ride as well. We're both 65 year old geezer types. Drive out on the service road and I go "wait! there's this new Launch Mode thing which I haven't tried yet, forgive me while I learn how." Fumble my way to/through the owners manual, get to Launch mode, do all the stuff. The high-performance guys are interested in watching all this unfold (whole "yeah the car gets new stuff through software all the time, yadda yadda" from me). Launch. Usual "holy !@#@!" response. From two guys that sell really high end motorcycles and are enthusiasts. Marcie's been sitting in the back seat during all this. Perfectly calm. Yep, this is normal. No, most of the time we drive for extreme economy but it's fun to show of the possibilities of the car. I think that commentary blew them away as much as the out and back launches. A good day.

My first Tesla moment in some time, living n the Midwest of Miami, after all:

Scene: Miami Auto Spa my car wash of choice.
Me: pulling in in queue behind a generic Escalade and the usual riff-raff.
Next: a BMW i8 pulls in behind me; an Alfa 4C immediately after hm.
i8 driver: is that your Tesla?
Me:yes, and your i8 is really beautiful.
4C driver: I feel so out of date!
i8 driver: is that really quicker than mine? Where can you buy it? Where do you charge it? There seem to be only pretty slow choices for me.
M: explain Superchargers, insane and and ludicrous.
4C: Ah, when I get something practical...

i8 driver: can you show me the torque.

some time later: holy s..t! That's faster than mine! Still later, as I allow him to drive: and it handles so well, so smooth...

we had discussed Steven Kessler Luigi Chinetti, various Ferrari Challenge, a Formula Ford, Jensen FF, and so on...
then he said...I wonder if I want to drive ICE (a term he just had learned) again.

methinks that will be a S90DL quite soon...

No idea about the 4C. She has been seen often in Tesla, so observed a couple fellow customers assisting the conversation.

so much for jaded car-rich Miami...

Went to the theatre (did the VIP dinner+movie to see Deadpool) on Saturday night with friends, picked them up in our Tesla.

While looking for parking, we came across 3 other Tesla's in the lot. Four Tesla's in the same parking lot. This is Canada folks, not California, that's a lot of Tesla's in one place!

When the movie was over, I told them to wait, I'd come up to the door to pick them up. I used the car voice command to "PLAY WHAM! Careless Whisper" (in-joke, it's the second last song played in the Deadpool movie) and drove up with the premium audio at 11. We had a great laugh.

Many nice cars had picked up patrons at the front door, and my wife and friends were commenting on them, but then I drove up, and they said "nicest car yet". ;-)

I was outside washing the wheels before taking her inside for the ONR treatment today and my garbage man drove by, stopped the ridiculously loud engine and said, "Is that thing really as fast as they say?" I turned around and said, "Yes, and I'm confident I could beat your rig off the line any day." We had a good chuckle and talked Tesla for a few minutes.

I've had many Tesla moments since getting mine in November, 2015 -- but overwhelmingly I get asked "Do you like it?" more than anything.

Never quite sure how to respond. A "yes" isn't sufficient and I don't want to make a smart ass comment, but I'm always tempted. What's your best one liner response to "Do you like it?"
  • Feb 22, 2016

I always say, "No." Then after the stunned looks, I continue, "It's more than like. It's the best car on the planet. We love it."

The conversation with the truck driver brings back the Motor Trend or CD article on track testing the Mercedes Benz GT. Stood for "garbage truck". You are aware MB builds work trucks....

I've gotten a few of the "do you like it" or even "love it" questions. It's the overwhelming number of "nice car" comments that have always stumped me. Those statements always seem to be oddly paired to when I know my vehicle could use a really good wash.

We've had our Model S for almost two years now. There were a couple of early moments that are unforgettable. After picking up our vehicle in Watertown, MA we headed off to CT. It was twilight when we exited the Mass Pike, stopping briefly to pay the toll with cash. The young cashier didn't notice the car until she handed us our change. Her eyes widened as she peered inside the car. She said, "That's quite the ......". There's no word there, she was absolutely speechless. I whispered back, "the future" and drove off. A few weeks later I stopped by a local True Value hardware store trying to find the right size J-hooks for my front license plate mount. I explained to a store worker what I was intending to use them for. He was an older gentleman and seemed to have heard of Tesla. He asked me if I really had one parked out in front of the store. I said sure, come on outside and have a look. We walked outside and he stopped, gazed at the car, then said, "I didn't think they really made these." For just a few seconds, I was the one that was speechless. Looking back I recognize that was a pretty cool moment for both of us.

That resonates with me, because now I usually tell the inquiring person:
Going out to the driveway, grinning at seeing a "Tesla Motors" All-Electric, Cyberspace-connected, Voice-Commandable, swift/silent personal transport, and confirming that it wasn't just a dream I just had, and it belongs to me ...is a daily thing. Going on two years.

    "Do you like it?"

My answer is generally along the lines of "No, I love it... and after driving this, I could NEVER go back to driving a Rube Goldberg machine. It's the Best... Thing... Ever..."

And if my wife is present, she'll usually add something like "He probably loves it more than me..."

I've tried to explain - several times - that it's a different kind of love, but she isn't buying it.

Walking back into the office today after lunch I get stopped and asked this question: "So how does the Tesla do in the rain?" (It's showering here today.)
I reply - "Does fine. No problems."
Then the question starts to strike me as odd and I probe further.
"Why do you ask? Why would any car be bad in the rain?"
He replies - "Well, it's electric, so there might be issues with shorts or getting shocked."
I didn't want to get too cute, so I left it at that. So yea, be careful out there :)

When I responded I wasn't thinking about the part of your sentence that said "some other connection somehow", but was rather responding only to the part about whether the company was named after the town.

"Summon" provided a Tesla Moment for me yesterday.

I had just finished buying a gallon of conversion varnish at Sherwin Williams industrial division when the counter guy gestured out the window at my MS and said "I noticed you drove up in a Tesla. I really love that car." "Thanks," I said, "Wanna see the latest trick it can do?"

I then pulled out my Fob and, while still standing at the counter, backed Max out of the parking space using the Summon command. Immediately there were shouts from the adjoining office "Hey, that car is moving with no one in it!" and two guys came rushing out. After I explained, one of them asked if I would do it again for the guys in back and he proceeded to call the rest of the crew to come see.

Lots of laughs and questions ensued.

    My moment:

To give you an ideal how much I follow Tesla, I use to google search the hell out of Tzero in college instead of studying.

So to my amazement when "I was going to own the first Tesla in Canada" I was working for a 4 week stint in Manitoba and driving outside of Winnipeg I saw a orange Tesla roadster. I'm not sure the exact timeframe but the model S was still slightly more then a white star rumor.

    I was so crushed

I was on an empty two-lane road last night coming home from work (both lanes going in the same direction - not opposite). A couple in a red P85D pulled up along side me at speed - the woman was driving. We nodded to each other, smiling politely. Then, as if instinctively, we both just punched it for about a 1/4 of a mile. We both stopped at the next red light and all three of us were laughing like school children. They then went their way and I went mine but that exchange made my day.

I took my 4-days-since-delivery Model S to Vegas for the weekend. Stayed at Bally's (which apparently doesn't have much beyond a wall plug) but one of the valets was actually thanking me that he was able to drive one, while I heard a few oohs and aahs from a few others waiting for their cars. Then while stopped at a light on the strip a woman give me two thumbs up, yelling nice car, but I'm pretty sure she was about five sheets to the wind. :)

I ended up spending almost my entire trip at the Cosmopolitan, which has two Tesla HPWC literally right outside the valet pickup. When I went to pick it up, they handed me my key and told me it was all charged (which I already knew :p) and ready right outside the "lobby" doors. I just had to pack my luggage and unplug then I was on my way. No waiting for someone to bring my car out, which was actually pretty nice.

I guess they ran away because they were hoping to see a German car and they ended to see a "T". So they thought it was some sort of Japanese car... You and me, we know that most of Portuguese people have only eyes for some German brands (and they buy a lot of them as signal of social recognition for wealthy people here), and the fact your are charging it's not a good thing for most of Portuguese car guys. For these, electric cars are for pussies. Fortunately, this way of thinking is changing, smoothly but surely. Here, in Ourm, there is more and more people interested in electric car and some are already waiting for the III and others are waiting for Tesla superchargers and service centre here in Portugal to order a Model S!

Tesla Moment for today was at Lexus service department (hey they have comp. breakfast) for Pearlie May's state inspection. Was like a gauntlet of "what IS that?" So today is the 33rd day of hot weather in Sydney Australia where the maximum temperature is above 26 Deg C (78 deg F), often a lot higher and the weather forecaster is saying it has at least another week to go. I visited a client this morning with iPad problems. He is a senior lawyer in a legal practice on many times my salary and was making small talk regarding the weather. He doesn't know what car I drive, or much about me at all but in the end he said, "I'm not going to be so soft with all my climate denying friends, I'm going to buy one of those new Tesla's and show them that there are real alternatives". So I felt obliged to say "Yes they're fantastic cars". "Have you driven one?" he asked. I don't normally disclose to clients that I'm a Model S owner but I thought it dishonest to stay silent now. "I drive a Model S" I said quietly. This was followed by 20 seconds of silence followed by "YOU OWN A MODEL S!" that probably could be heard throughout the office. We then had a long detailed conversation Tesla, Elon and his house renovations that will now include extra capacity for an EV in the garage. In the end though he is more interested in the Model 3 so I showed him the website and showed him where to create an account to order his Model 3 on April 1 in Australia.
