Chris TX Hey guys with the non-working exterior door handles, it could be a recent firmware load ( .30) that didn't push to all the actuators. This happened to me over the weekend and an SC visit might be in order. Call Tesla first to see if Freemont can dial in and check the status of the controller module for all the doors. If they see the firmware is different for one or some, they might be able to re-push it out.

mknox Headlight Fogging
Rather than start a new thread, I thought I would post this here. In the cold, damp weather, I have noticed a build-up of condensation inside of both headlight lenses. My iPhone camera flash kind of over-emphasizes it, but this is what it looks like:

Dec 18, 2013
Eggplant I've seen this too. I've also seen this start to frost over on the inside of the housing on long cold drives. Those LEDs don't put out enough heat to keep it from frosting.
Reminds me of when they started replacing all the traffic lights here with LED versions. Then had to install heating elements in the light when they became covered in snow. The extra cost and electricity to run the heaters was an over all loss.

drayers Quick search didnt show any other posts about problems with charge port magnet peeled off cover. Sorry no pics.
Basically walked up to car and noticed the charge port hanging open. On close inspection, the adhesive on the cover was separated from the magnet on the door. I could close it and the adhesive would hold for a little while, but would pop open again eventually.
Tesla Service fixed it under warranty, in addition to a glove box that wouldn't close (tabs would get stuck in the panel).
edit: nevermind - saw a few pages back that someone else had a similar issue
Service also did some courtesy corrections -
Correction: Apply Loctite on C-Pillar Brightwork on Both Sides, Clean Area
Correction: Install Felt Tape, Inspect/Grind Crossmember, Inspect/Install Shims,
Inspect/Back out Spacer Bolts, Inspect/Move J Clips
Correction: Inspect Knuckle/Ball Joint Surfaces, Install 4 Front Lower Control Arm
Washers
Correction: Remove and Replace Glove Box, Rework Glove Box

scaesare Yeah, my issue was same...
I also just got off the phone with my service center, and they are ordering me a new headliner. The edges of mine were fraying where it didn't quite extend far enough to be concealed by the door seals... so they said they'd replace it.

howardc64 Maybe this should be a sub-forum instead of a thread so all the issues aren't piled into a deep thread.
My car encountered 2 problems today... broken sunroof wind deflector and condensation inside reverse and brake light lens. Condensation seems pretty common, not sure if Tesla found a fix for it yet.
Took a closer look at the broken sunroof wind deflector and found the plastic arm on the driver side that tilts up the wind deflector broken. The arm is made of plastic and pretty narrow (about 1/4" thick with some hallow channels inside for the spring) and there is pretty beefy torsion type spring under it that pops it up when the sunroof is opened. I see another online post that is likely the exact same failure. I'm guessing the arm is likely too weak to handle the amount of spring pressure.
Broken Sunroof Fixed Quickly - 2013 Tesla Model S Long-Term Road Test
My sunroof wouldn't close due to jammed broken arm. I had to reposition the broken pieces and close the roof 10% at a time to gradually get it closed for now. Have a after XMAS appointment to get it fixed. The service center stocks this part so I'm guessing it breaks fairly often. Here is a pic. Torsion spring laying sideways in the middle of the picture. Broken arm on the left and right.
UPDATE: SC replaced the wind deflector. Spoke to the tech and he said Tesla change the plastic to be beefier at around the time of my VIN 9919. A quick look on the new one seems to be the same shape so we'll see

NotARichMan I got a "behind the scenes" tour of our local SC the other day. The parts guys showed me the small box and a few items on the shelf that represented December's "trade ins". It took up a remarkably small section of the shelf. It was mostly made up of outside door handles that stopped functioning properly.

EarlyAdopter I experienced my first unexpected problem on my Model S in a year of ownership the other week when it was down in the teens (Fahrenheit).
I had my gym clothes on, which are dry-fit polyester and total static electricity generators. Well, when I got out of the car and touched the door handle to close the door I gave it a serious static discharge shock and the window rolled down an inch! Next day same thing happened again but this time it froze the window in the auto-down position and it refused to go up or down. I pulled the driver's window motor fuse to see if my shock blew it. It was fine, but the act of pulling the fuse seemed to reset it and it worked again.
Warmer, more humid weather since and I haven't experienced this again. I chalk it up to a tiny glitch in the Matrix.

fryfrye 50/50 if it was just a bad battery or a bad sensor they found that caused the battery issue. Both 12v and main battery (where the sensor is) are being replaced. As a shareholder I sure hope Tesla does some sort of remanufacture of these main batteries when a single sensor goes out...

brianstorms New question:
Anyone know if it is normal for your seat heater to turn on when you turn on the winshield *hot* defrost/defogging feature? I always notice the seat warming up as if I'd also pressed the icon on the screen for the seat warmer, but no, I press the defrost button for HEAT, and it starts right away, but then the seat warms up --- and the seat warmer icon is *not* lit on the screen.

Mario Kadastik Yesterday out of the blue after I had parked at a friends place for a few hours came back to the rear view camera being unavailable. Tried 17" reboot, tried today calling roadside assistance and they couldn't figure out what this is either, tried another 17" restart and a whole car off, wait 3 minutes, start thing. Still no camera. Now they send it to engineering to think.

Jan 14, 2014
Mario Kadastik Well Tesla have checked the logs etc and they conclude it's a hardware issue. Either a cable, the socket, the camera or MCU. This will require service center visit (closest is 800+km) so we're planning a ranger visit where I organize working environment for the ranger.

Jan 21, 2014
Mario Kadastik Ranger visited today. The diagnostics ended up taking hours as the camera decided to star working the moment he reconnected it after trying the new camera (the camera didn't work initially and he did try to squeeze the cable in all directions etc to make it work, didn't help). Ended up diagnosing that the cable running from the camera cable (which is ca 10 inches long) to the roof connectors at the rear left (so the cable running the length of the trunk hatch) was at fault. It was supposed to give off pulsating 12v, but was giving various voltages, all far below 12v. Swapping the cable to a new one gave proper voltages. Just in case the ranger swapped the camera too as I live too far to risk it being also a fault of the camera.
He also took care of a service bulletin requiring new washers on front suspensions and retorquing all suspensions washers. We had a look at the windscreen fogging and there might be a slight misalignment of the door that allows possibly some air to leak into the front triangle region. We used randomly available insulation material to add some layers there as a temporary fix while he discusses with engineering as it seems the doors aren't adjustable. Will see at next highway speed drive if the new insulation helps or not.

neroden Some assistance please. This is the problem which caused severe corrosion, right? So it's very important to fix in salty climates.
I'm looking at my service record for the work done on 14 November.
Is this different from, or the same as, "Front Bumper Carrier Bolt Replacement", which seemed to involve a washer replacement?
Jan 24, 2014
Mario Kadastik To be hones I have no clue. The two washers were at the bottom of the wheel assembly (below suspensions, brakes etc) so he had to remove the wheels to remove and replace them. Somehow doubt those are in any way related to front bumper though as they really were at the bottom of the air suspensions (the washer is the lowest point going below even the brake disk etc if I remember right).

yobigd20 After trekking home through the snow on Tuesday, the wheel wells were pretty impacted with snow. Last night I went out to my garage and they were still impacted pretty heavily. I lightly tapped off all this impacted snow, but today when I went to drive in to work the car shudders pretty hard > 60mph and really really hard > 70mph. I am wondering whether or not the suspension was damaged by the impacted snow or if my alignment was seriously knocked out of whack. I drove it home instead of driving 100 miles to work. Need to call service...

Jan 24, 2014
Mario Kadastik This is normalWith that kind of snow that gets iced over the balance of the wheels is off. This is hardly felt up to ca 70-80km/h (ca 40mph?), but above that the bigger the wheels (and 19" is really already quite big) the vibration will start to be felt. Going above the level where you start to feel the vibration is not a good idea as you might damage it from the constant vibration. I remember when I went to an ice track with my Evo X a couple of years ago I had the wheels full of packed snow and it froze overnight. When I drove the next day I had to drive 200km at 70km/h because I couldn't go above due to vibrations. The easy fix (unless you lost some balancing weights driving in that snow) is to take the car to some warm garage for the day and let the snow/ice melt. Going to carwash will get it mostly out too, but might end up being a temporary trick as said water at real cold might not be a good idea unless you can let the car dry in a warm place.

yobigd20 AM/FM receiver in the MS sucks. AT&T in NJ sucks. You're kind screwed here. I pair it through my 4G LTE hotspot for internet and internet radio.
sounds like cold weather issue with the electronic folding side mirrors. I've seen quite a few posts from people having issues in the cold here. I guess Tesla's design/implementation was sub-par here. You're probably going to have to wait for them to issue a TSB of some sort. I'm assuming its a design flaw.
everyone has this. it is a "normal" sound.
there is a TSB they will apply to fix this.
Jan 24, 2014
JaredBanyard Interesting on the AM/FM. The internet radio has been awesome for me. I should have been more specific. When playing any audio source; the sub, all the of the left channel, and a number of right speakers cut out with only a couple right speakers still playing. Definitely a connection/grounding/something problem.
Yeah the left hand mirror works great, but the right one has been like this since I picked up the car. I hope the mind the XPEL wrap I just had done to the mirrors.
Odd that I wasn't hearing this since I got the car, and it's doing it today all of the sudden. It's going in for service because of the above, so I guess they will check it out.
Again, I hope they mind the XPEL wrap I just had done to the headlights.

AmpedRealtor
- Audio cutting out on Slacker and other streamed sources is normal and depends heavily on the quality of your 3G internet connection. FM cutouts are related to HD radio stream and weak signal - I'm betting that you listen to HD radio. These are not defects, but normal behaviors depending upon your signal strength.
- Mirrors remember two settings - normal position and tilted position. Put the car in Park and adjust your mirrors for normal driving. Save to your driver profile. While pressing the brake pedal, put the car into reverse. Now adjust the mirrors how you would like them in the tilted position. The settings are automagically saved.
- Stumped
- This is normal per Tesla and not something they are going to address. Not a defect or issue, just one of those peculiarities of having an electric motor.
- Not normal and should just need to be resealed
- - - Updated - - -
I just saw your clarification above, please disregard.

Doug_G I'm the guy with the bad corrosion; they had to replace my carrier. As I recall, the service bulletin originally only called for changing the washers. It's possible that they have subsequently changed the service bulletin to include the bolts.

Jan 25, 2014
capt601 Rotation, along with alignment, is included with either prepaid or just paying for annual maintenance, zero difference, except for the discount.
Jan 27, 2014
ddruz I was told by my Service Center that Tesla's policy is that after the first free tire rotation that tire rotations at time of 12,000 mile service on prepaid service plans are free but interim tire rotations will cost $75. Anyone else hearing something different?
Jan 27, 2014
yobigd20 Yep. I was told its free if you've ever paid for service at any point. Aka first ones free (because you hit 6k miles before the first 12k service). Then at 12k either you have the prepaid plan or you pay individually for the 12k service. You get rotated then too. Then at your next tire rotation, they look to see if you have ever had service before. If you have the prepaid plan obviously it doesn't matter. I don't have this plan. But if you don't have this plan, they look to see if you've ever paid for service. They could see that I paid for service once and thus rotated and balanced my tires again for free.
My situation is slightly different though. First, I don't have the prepaid plan. At 6k miles I brought mine in for tire rotation and my p85 emblem and spoiler mounted. Then , I brought my car in at 23k miles for "first service" where I paid for that individually )$670 including taxes). They rotated then too. Last, now I am at 36k miles and I brought it in again for tire rotation the other day and that was free.
So basically I don't stick to be 6k tire rotation interval, and I also don't stick to the 12k service interval. I've brought mine in 3 times, twice for just tire rotation and once for service (which included a third tire rotation). I'll probably bring mine in again around 49k miles for my "second" service. I do keep and eye on my tires and measure them weekly though. I personally don't feel like I am getting $600 worth during that service BUT I will admit they do a bunch of warranty / TSB things every time. So while "wiper blades and key fob battery" might not be worth $600 (because seriously there is like zero maintenance to this car), the rest of everything else they do is worth it. Under warranty or not, I've never seen a car manufacturer do so many things on their dime before. They do go overboard I think trying to make everyone happy. I think that's where the value of $600 is. Plus we are constantly getting "free" software updates and new features.
Jan 28, 2014
JaredBanyard Well looks like Tesla couldn't reproduce my audio problems, they said for me to continue to narrow it down and see if I can find when and what is happening... Starting to make me regret the Studio Sound package.
They did upgrade the firmware so I guess we will see what happens on the drive home.

Chris So I have finally decided to report a curious issue with the GPS/navigation to service. Every few minutes or so the directional arrow on the google map display starts spinning, doing a full 360 before it goes back to normal. paco3791 Had been getting a consistent 'Hummmm' at around 55mph from the car, pretty much since delivery in Oct 2013. It was linked the the accelerator petal. I had heard others had the same issue and decided to wait until the new Service Center opened up on my way to work. Once they opened up they said they would give me a call once they had a 60kWh drive unit available. Just took it in this morning, now that they have the Drive unit, and they are replacing the original noisy one. Please note that this is just a low consistent Hum/growl, not the high pitched 'balloon noise' sound under hard accel, I was getting that too, so it will be interesting to see if I still have any noise under hard acceleration with the new drive unit. Once I get the car back hopefully I can get answers to the following;
-Is this just something loose in the inverter that creates extra noise when switching? or is it something mechanical in the bearings, gearing, etc.?
-I thought there was a common drive unit between the 60's and the non-performance 85's? the fact that they said they had to wait for a 60 specific drive unit seems to contradict that, or maybe it's just a firmware thing and they just had to get one with the right program pre loaded?
Feb 3, 2014
yobigd20 sigh. i keep reading posts from ppl getting the consistent 'hummmm' (aka low hum - not high pitch whine), but when I was in last week for tire rotation and minor warranty work they told me this low hum was "normal" and refused to replace it. It's pretty annoying...
Feb 3, 2014
mknox That would be horrible service where I live. At this time of year, I can't drive more than a mile without wipers and washers due to all the road salt and slushy conditions. That would put me out of business for 3 days at least, and I would have likely needed a tow from the point of failure.
Feb 4, 2014
paco3791 I feel your pain, and I was merely asking for them to listen to the sound and decide for themselves if it was "normal" or not. No expectations going in on them replacing it or not. I could have lived with the noise if they had decided not to replace, but I got excellent service as always.
Couple things to note from my conversations with the service team:
- they said the noise was coming from a bad bearing, which I think is a little odd since the noise was linked to the go pedal. It's not like there is a clutch or anything else that would disengage any rotating parts when power isn't being applied. So either it's a bearing and the combination of a certain speed range and the added vibration of being under power hits just the right frequency or the techs at my service center don't really know what it is. My original theory that it had something to do with the inverter switching doesn't hold a lot of water either since then it would be linked to a certain power level output (like the high pitched noise is/was), not speed.
- according to the techs, Originally these kinds of problems got recorded locally and then the recordings got sent back to engineering to decide if there was something wrong with the drive unit. Recently however the decision making authority has been left to the local techs. In other words its a judgement call on their part and may vary by service center.
- forgot to ask about the drive unit commonality between 60's and the non-performance 85's, but I'm assuming it's just that that level of firmware programming can't be done at a service center.
Also I had my UMC replaced because it was having problems connecting to the car consistently. It looks like I got the newer version that I've seen a few pictures of around here. You can tell the difference between the new and the old by looking at the charge handle. Old has a charge door button that has a gap all the way around, New has a gap only on three sides.

Mh2bubba Anyone having issues with the car forgetting the radio presets? Happens on FM/XM. Typically its the one you were listening to before turning the car back on. Sometimes it can be more than one preset. Sometimes comes back after turning the car on/off. Other times, it's gone forever. Weird.
Feb 4, 2014
J in MN Early Volts had a motor bearing failure. The noise only occurred during regen, and sounded like a band saw. So I believe it.
Feb 4, 2014
JRP3 There can be issues with electric motors passing current through the bearings if they are not properly isolated, which prematurely ages the bearing. Because this is an electrical phenomenon it makes sense that it's related to the power going to the motor, either through regen or the inverter.
Feb 5, 2014
paco3791 That makes sense, and this doesn't necessarily even have to be actual motor power, I know in other motors if the bearing isn't grounded properly static discharges can also prematurely age the bearings.
Feb 6, 2014
Eggplant So, had my "annual" maintenance at 7 months due to milage.
Gripes about actual value of maintenance items aside, the SC did spend quite a lot of hours (one tech was on my car all day, 8AM to about 5PM) going over the car and fixing squeaks and wind noise. Some I mentioned before hand, and others they did on their own after a test drive. So that was nice.
One thing I have is a terrible loud squeak coming from a fan near the front passenger side of the car when the AC is running. It does this at any temperature. All I have to do is turn on AC. You can hear is best through the wheel well. They said it was a "known issue" and that "there is no official fix yet, but Fremont is working on it." It's quite bad, and embarrassing to drive up sounding like I have an 1980s era beater with a bad fan belt.
Feb 7, 2014
ddruz Have you tried setting your car to Range mode? The AC gets stepped down and the fan noise has been reported to disappear on a number of cars. It did on mine. Never have it on Range mode. Car still gets plenty cool most of the time. When I need it cooler faster I turn off Range mode till it cools then turn it back on again.
Also note other threads on the site that indicate prepaid service requirements have officially been relaxed. You can go in once a year now regardless of miles instead of every 12,000 miles. I too found this out just after I did my service check at 12,000 miles and 9 months. Next year though.
Feb 7, 2014
Eggplant Oh, that's interesting. I'll have to ask about that mileage thing. I'd much prefer to go annually since I pile so many miles on my car.
The fan issue seems to happen range mode or no. BUT. I'd like to follow up and say that apparently Tesla ownership reads this thread. (Everyone wave! Hi folks!) I just got a call from the regional service manager to talk about the fan issue based on my post above. He promised to get the fan issue fixed.
Tesla service is absolutely the best.
Feb 9, 2014
matthelm At roughly 6000 miles, I started to experience a "wobble" during acceleration and deceleration. Using an airplane analogy, it felt as if the car would yaw to the right under acceleration and to the left under deceleration.
First thing Monday (7 AM) I brought it in to the Scottsdale Tesla Service Center. I did this *without* first calling and making an appointment. They took me right in, wrote down my concerns, and even went on a drive with me so I could demonstrate the problem. Since I was there, I mentioned a few minor squeaks and rattles, and they said they would look into these as well.
Chris Swann was my Service Advisor, and he gave me a ride over to Enterprise where they got me on my way with a nice, new Cadillac ATS. The rental and first tank of gas was on Tesla. During the rental walk-around, the agent started the Caddy for me. I asked him what the loud groaning and roaring sound was, then, before he could answer I said: "Oh yeah, that's the motor!"He gave me that "another Tesla A-hole" look, as that was probably not the first time he had heard that joke.
Chris called me around 11:00 AM with a status update. They had found some loose suspension bolts, and also needed to do a "Front Lower Control Arm Washer Installation" service bulletin. They were also going to look into the aforementioned minor buzzes and rattles and would probably be done by 3:00 PM.
Around 3 PM, Chris called me again and said the car was done, and would I like them to valet it to me and take the rental back. Wow. I declined, having been trained by all prior automobile dealers to bring the rental car back on my own and then schlep over to the dealer to pick up my car.
The Enterprise rental place that the Scottsdale Tesla Service Center uses is easily within walking distance, so I dropped the Caddy at Enterprise first. The agent asked how I liked the Cadillac, and I said: "it was fine." He then said: "But, I bet it's not as nice as a Tesla." I responded: "Im sure GM is doing the best they can." My inside voice however agreed with him, and I wondered how much longer GM will survive. Maybe they can find a niche for themselves as a pickup truck manufacturer.
Anyway, back to Tesla. Chris brought my car around, all shiny and clean thanks to a courtesy detail they had done. Nice! We went through the items they worked on, and the resolution of each. We then shook hands and I was on my way. Total cost to me $0.00.
Here were the items they worked on:
1. Panoramic Roof Creak.
I didn't mention this, and had no roof creak. I guess they are pro-actively checking these whenever a car comes in.
2. Front Lower Control Arm Washer Installation
3. Rattle in right rear area
They found a loose fastener on the right side of the headliner and fixed it.
4. Right rear and left rear seat belts will sometimes fail to extend
This they could not duplicate, and I admitted it was relayed to me from a passenger that might have "been doing it wrong."
5. Rattle just above 17" touchscreen
Tesla fixed this by applying "felt" and re-securing some clips on the dash pad.
6 & 7. These were related to the "yaw" problem I was experiencing, and Chris experienced as well during our test drive.
Chris said they went around and loosened and then re-torqued all suspension bolts to specification and that cured the problem. We then had a brief discussion on the chances that the bolts would just loosen again, and I would be back for a repeat performance. For example, are the bolts safety wired? No. Are they torque-striped to enable visual inspection? Not all of them. After consulting with some of the technicians, Chris and I reached consensus that the bolts of concern are similar to wheel lug nuts, that is, applying the proper torque value will allow them to maintain tightness. We both agreed to leave unanswered the obvious question as to why they were either delivered, or became loose, as we didn't have enough data to speculate. Personally I made a mental note to take the wheels off and torque-stripe the bolts and do a visual inspection when I rotate the tires. My guess at this time is that will likely turn out to be a waste of my time, as my situation was probably just a glitch.
8 & 9. Update Firmware
I didn't ask for this, so it was probably just another standard process thing Tesla does when you bring your car in.
All in all, an excellent service experience. I recommend that if you have any concerns you should take your car to the Service Center. Unlike other dealerships, they will not try to "up sell" you, and your car will love it!

capt601 The Enterprise rental place that the Scottsdale Tesla Service Center uses is easily within walking distance, so I dropped the Caddy at Enterprise first.

Discoducky Great post matthelm! That issue with the rear seat belts is real and a bummer for the passengers back there. We use all the belts back there and they are far too sensitive to engage ratchet mode.
Feb 10, 2014
caddieo My issue with the rear seat belts is different. The latches are so recessed which makes the rear seat look nice, but which at the same time makes it difficult to engage them especially since most of my passengers are of a certain age with some mobility/flexibility impairment. I already called attention to this during my one and only visit to the Longwood SC but they cannot be extended. And I am not about to start cutting the leather back there either. Anybody else with this problem?

pete8314 Mine just started creaking, loudly, again. It was fixed last summer after a couple of attempts, but now it seems to be the colder weather that's triggering it, as it starts to ease after 15 mins of driving. The cold damp weather here in Texas definitely brings out all the creaks, the dash has started to rattle a bit as well, but a gentle thump fixed that.

Feb 11, 2014
bareyb I just got one from Heather in Sunnyvale for my creak! I guess they are monitoring these forums and there was enough info in my signature for them to find me. Kinda makes me think they might actually have a fix for this. It's a small creak, but I have to say, it's been kind of a buzz kill. If they can really fix it, that would take care of the only real complaint I have with the car.

mknox Okay... years ago I was on a Chrysler Usenet Group talking about a peculiarity in how my car's automatic transmission was behaving as I would come to a stop (known as "bump stop" -- it felt like you were rear-ended as you came to a stop). A mechanic at my dealer saw it and called me in to have the transmission software re-programmed at no cost (was outside of warranty) and cured my problem.
It happens.

Mario Kadastik Got today the famous Tesla preventive service callsomeone mentioned the parking breaks locking hard on his Model S on some thread and I contributed that when I paked my car two weeks ago for four days and then moved it the first time there too was a loud crack when the parking break broke free. So today I suddenly got a call from Tesla Copenhagen Service that they had heard that I had had an issue with my parking break locking after 4 days of standing and if everything was fine or they could do something.
I laughed and mentioned that I had only mentioned it on TMC and that all was fine as I considered it normal for high performance cars and have experienced it before with my evo x too. He laughed and confirmed indeed that it does happen if the car isd riven and then with warm breaks left to stand a day or more with parking break engaged and as long as all was fine with no odd noise or anything else afterwards, then I'm good. Thanked him for superb service and promised to lett hem know the moment there's anything they can do to help. Truly hard to believe such service truly exists
Edit: also remember I'm far away from core market with closest service center >1000km away and a sea in the middle.

bareyb Well son of a gun! They seem to have fixed it. I went by the Sunnyvale Service Center and "Heather" turned out to be someone I used to work with! So that was a nice surprise. Told me that someone from HQ sent an Alert to the Service Manger and he in turn sent it to her. So I guess they do Monitor this thread. Good to know.
At any rate, they were very professional and friendly as always, and so far nary a peep out of my Pana Roof. Can't tell you how happy that makes me. It was a small thing I could've probably lived with, but this is better. I won't miss it.![]()
They also updated the Software (not version 6) and did another noise fix in the Chrome piece around the rear window door pillar that I didn't even ask for. Apparently it was a TSB. So all in all a pretty successful trip. Took about an hour and I got to show them all the Easter Egg in the Tesla Screen and the Time4Tesla Clock. They were duly impressed and wondered how the heck I knew about that stuff. I told I have connections online.

Eggplant Just to follow up and close my own thread. Service ended up replacing both condenser fans. Once they got the parts in and covers off they could make them squeak just by spinning the fan with a finger. So they replaced them both. Squeak is gone! And they even fixed up a couple more things I hadn't even noticed.
That's the huge difference here with tesla service. Since they aren't a profit center, the service folks are motivated to look for and fix stuff. Even the little stuff, even if you don't ask.

Super Gizmo Well we'll see if I get a response for my problem. I have an early 2012 P85 (VIN: 01586) and I have been having the humming sound from inverter around 70MPH or so. I have taken the car to the local Service Center and they did not do any thing about it. They have otherwise been good about taking care of other things like the suspension updates etc. I also changed my tires to new Michelins but the loud hum persists. I have had more problems with this car than I could list on one post. Most of them have been simple to fix - like adjusting the hood, the doors, the hatch etc for alignment and replacing door handles because the doors were opening on their own etc. etc. The big problem is the loud hum from the inverter/drive unit. I hope someone from the factory reads my post or I guess I'll have to go to their HQ in Palo Alto and ask for help. Luckily I live in the Bay Area (North Bay) so I have quite a few options.

SamGarber Unlucky day today. Two issues - secondary onboard charger is toast and my rear right door unlatches every time I park (hit park on stalk).
Awaiting call back from the service center. The phone support person was not surprised at the charger this morning but was completely bewildered at the unlatching later in the day when it started happening.
Is it a virus haha?
Feb 23, 2014

Super Gizmo As I mentioned in my post above, I had numerous fixable problems in the past which were pretty much all fixed by the Service centers. I attributed most of them to being an early adopter (11/2012 delivery). I have in the past, twice posted on this forum about the great service I have received from my local Service Center in San Rafael, CA. Except for the major problem with the hum issue which they did not address and the recent small lug nuts problem everything has been great.
Well a little while ago I received a call from the Service Manager offering to reimburse the charge for the lug nuts because it was similar to the problem on the Edmunds car. They are also going to address my loud humming issue at freeway speeds (The longer I drive on a trip the louder it gets, especially on a warm day. It was really bad when I drove from SF to LA & back a few months ago.)
So, once again a great response from Tesla Service. As I have said before, it is us the owners who sell cars for Tesla - especially when we are happy with our own experience. Tesla doesn't spend a dime on advertising because we spread the good word for them. It is very important for the success of the company to not have unhappy customers some of whom have spent over a $100K. Keep it up Tesla and we will keep spreading the good word!
Feb 24, 2014
brianman Can you elaborate on this? Thanks.
Feb 24, 2014
Super Gizmo After having new Michelin tires put on the car at a Tire Shop, when I went for wheel alignment & an update to rear camber & some kind of suspension bolts so right rear tire would not wear out prematurely (apparently there is an update for this issue), when they removed the wheels the lug nuts got stuck in the socket and they had to tap them out from the other end causing dimples in the lug nuts. If you read the complete Edmunds blog the same thing happened to their car's lug nuts when it was towed in after going dead near the freeway in LA.
Feb 24, 2014
brianman Ok, that's what I suspected. Yes, the soft metal at the top of the lug nuts has crossed over into "evil" in my book. I've already ruined 4 of them. (Luckily I have an "extra" 20 from the 19" wheels I bought used.)
I hope Tesla comes out with new ones that don't suck.
Feb 24, 2014
cwerdna Please keep us up to date on what they do for that (e.g. bearing, drive unit, tires, etc.)
Feb 25, 2014
teslasguy I have the exact same issue. The seatbelt latch is so recessed on one side that I had to buy an extender from Amazon for guests to be able to buckle up. I mention it to my SC every time I take the car in, but so far no solution offered. This is like the rear passenger window that goes down every time my knee bumps the door window button. I've complained about it forever, even to Jerome and made a suggestion to have the drivers side disable button work for drivers rear window button as well. Complete blow off response. I'm really getting tired of spending my weekends at car shows "selling" Teslas and spending $$ on "educational" materials to help people better understand the car to be treated this way.
Feb 25, 2014
Musterion If you are desperate, you can buy a pack of the official Tesla "black plastic lug nut caps disguised to look like a real nut" and slip them over your dinged ones. Looks OK even on silver wheels although they only come standard on 21" gray wheels, and they are cheaper than a set of new lug nuts. If you want to try them out, you can park next to a recent dark-wheel demo car and swap them on by hand to see what they look like.
Feb 25, 2014
teslasguy Well, I just received an email from Jerome in which he copied my post above into some kind of Tesla form which was pasted into the email.
Basically, he said that there is nothing that they can do about either situation I mentioned and that they have in fact been responsive, including this email referenced.
Wow! Don't know what to say other than I find this very disheartening. Those on this board for very long know how big of a supporter of Tesla I have been from the beginning.
Feb 25, 2014
Super Gizmo As per the local Service Manager, they may replace my drive unit or motor mounts of a new type (they are not sure) next week. Waiting for a loaner to become available next week. I replaced the OEM Continentals to Michelin PS 2 last week because right rear had worn down on the inside edge. Their is a fix for that . The Service center did an alignment and replaced some kind of bolts in the rear along with adjusting the camber etc. so "hopefully" this doesn't happen again.

Since Tesla is reimbursing me for the new lug nuts, I am going to pay back the Tire Shop guy who had refunded me for installing the new tires. Even though he didn't believe he did anything wrong, he immediately gave me my money back when I showed him the work order in which Tesla had charged me for the lug nuts. yobigd20 I have a new whining/whistling sound now whenever the car is "on". This is different than the balloon squeal. This is different than the low pitch whine tied to accelerator at any speed. This is different than the rising hum > 60 mph. This is different than wind noise. (By the way, I have ALL of the above sounds...) but now, I have some sort of whistling interference sound. Might be coming from the display?? This one isn't tied to accelerator. This one has the nails scraping on chalkboard effect as it doesn't ever seem to go away and it grits on ya. Sigh. I've complained about some of these to both Queens and Norristown to no avail while I see everyone else's getting fixed or drive units replaced (referring to the accelerator whines and low hum.) Maybe I'll try Springfield NJ next. Hopefully I'll have some better luck there... I did make a recording of this new sound. I'll see if I can YouTube another audio frequency spectral analysis of it later and post it here.

brianman My concern isn't about the look of the dented ones. My concern is that it makes it very difficult to remove the wheels quickly and cleanly.
Feb 25, 2014
brianstorms Does this sound like a symptom anyone's ever experienced before?
Car charged overnight, apparently fine. But when I got to car in garage in morning, I noticed the car wasn't waking up. I opened the trunk okay, to put the UMC in, but when I walked to the side, I noticed the chargeport was dark -- usually it's lit. I pressed the button. Nothing. I pressed again. Nothing. Pressed third time, harder, it woke up in let me pull it out.
I moved to the driver's door and the handles auto-presented. I opened back door, put my stuff in, closed door, opened drivers door, got in.
Normally there'd be a big number on dash indicating what the state of charge was. Dash is dark.
Here is where it gets weird: I press the brake, and it is very stiff. Then suddenly there is a loud POP/CLAP sound from under the car, and then what I call the "fridge sound" from the front underside of car, and the brake pedal relaxes, and car wakes up.
Did I catch my Tesla in a deep sleep?
Feb 26, 2014
VolkerP it was dreaming of FW 6.
I think "fridge sound" is appropriate because it is a vacuum pump (similar to a compressor) that supplies auxiliary force to the brake pedal.

They also adjusted door strikers and latches to close with less force since this was a problem I noticed. They did some TSB work (Front Lower Control Arm Washer install) and supposedly updated the FW, but my version is at 5.8.2 - which is lower than I saw on the forums from some folks - the one that fixes the balloon noise is 5.8.8.

fuelsman Just had my first service (car deliver Sept. 2013) for condensation in the backup lights and non-opening panoramic roof. Got a lecture about never use anything but soap and water on the wheels - all wheel cleaners are abrasive and/or acidic. The roof needs parts that are on order, they re glued the backup lights, re painted gratis the brake rotors, and got a lot of service bulletin items. The service bulletin items were a lot of new stickers particularly more prominent stickers for first responders, new lower arm suspension bushings (car feels stiffer), and other minor updates. Had the service center pop out the wheel centers so I could put on the 'T' decals. Other than having to rub off some glue drips the service was fine. Didn't say how long for the parts order but did say it would be a two day service as they have to cut out the roof glass from their seals.
Mar 3, 2014
Duckjybe Lower arm suspension bushings!? Was this a service bulletin? What model do you have? Any improvements in the wind? Would this be considered a partial P85+ upgrade?
Mar 3, 2014
yobigd20 Unless he's referring to these (pic below) which I received in January, if it really is upgraded lower arm suspension bushings, this might actually be the first confirmed "included hardware upgrade" with the service. If I recall posts from lolchamp these bushings are standard on ALL cars now regardless of model. I wasn't expecting to get these retrofitted for free with the service but hey if they are doing that, that's great and can't wait to get them when I go in for service!

fuelsman We're correct, it wasn't the bushings rather lower control arm nuts and washers, sorry. Also done, added felt tape on curtain airbag canister to correct panoramic roof creak and applied loctite on c-pillar brightwork to correct creak.
Mar 3, 2014
Duckjybe Darn, I was getting all excited for new bushings. What affect do the washers have on performance?
Mar 3, 2014
Otmar I'm told the washers (Nordlock that go on the lower ball joint nuts) protect against loosening of the front lower ball joints. Loose ball joints would certainly make for a sloppy front end. The system looks sounds to me. It's hard to imagine these large nuts with thread locker on the nuts loosening up, but I bought a set anyway just in case they might be important. It's cheap insurance as I see it, especially for those of you still in warranty.
