My car was exceptionally good (24k miles, mid-2013) until last week. Then, I had up to 11 error messages, and the parking brake wouldn't release (more accurately, the car didn't know the state of the parking brake). Tesla had it towed (which was it's own adventure, since the parking brake wouldn't release), and has had the car for the last week. They've replaced the drive unit, the HV contactors in the battery, and now want to take it for a 50 mile extended test drive...
I'm not unhappy, as I've been traveling and haven't needed the car, but I'm a little concerned that they haven't told me a cause for all the errors. I'm guessing some sort of wiring or networking issue, but that's just a very uninformed guess.

I don't think they'd replace the drive unit for wiring or network issues.

They had wanted to replace the drive unit anyway. When I had it in for the annual service, they mentioned that they would like to replace the drive unit at some point, and scheduled me for sometime in July. When the car freaked out and they had it for an extended period, they decided to go ahead and replace the drive unit when they had some time.
Is a 50 mile test drive normal for a drive unit replacement?

I had a car lemoned once (Range Rover). It's considered a lemon if it has less than 100k on odometer and has been in the shop for more than 30 days straight or if it's been in multiple times for an issue they cannot resolve.

Sound came back. On the second though it doesn't necessarily come from display but anyway from somewhere in dashboard. It is not continuous, but needs proper speed and road surface texture.
Edit: it comes from vibrating display (smaller display). When I press it, sound stops.

My brand spanking new 70D did this. Rather than wait for Tesla service, I traced it to a screw not fully tightened at the factory on the vent to the left of the small display..It vibrated constantly at around 70 MPH as soon as I hit the 880 right outside the factory. How they did not find this during the QC test drive is beyond me.
I also discovered a small chip in the corner of the piano black storage area on the floor on the way home from Fremont. I'll point this out next time I'm at service for some other reason. I don't want to be "that" bitchy customer guy taking my car in for some minor cosmetic defect.

Honestly, little disappointed in the piano black console I had installed also. The edge of the piano black material when closed, towards the rear, is all uneven/chipped/rough looking like it wasn't applied well or rubbed off. :-/
Low frequency rumble comes from tires in rough surface, but the problem is the high pitch vibrating sound which comes from the small display.

I've got a rattle like that in my right front door that sounds like a connector or something banging against the door trim. It only occurs when the sound system is turned up and a certain bass frequency is hit. It's the same sound but at a more regular frequency.
I wonder if it's a connector? The poor NVH guys at Tesla must really have their work cut out for them without a noisy ICE to mask all these odd sounds. I've managed to find and fix several already. It's somewhat fun and I get to avoid wasting Tesla service resources. (and be w/o my new car for what would probably seem forever!)

Also; forgot to mention that the dash parts are pretty easy to take apart. The assemblies are put together just like all cars built in the last ~20 years; they use round plastic "xmas tree" type fasteners and metal clips that snap into rectangular cut-outs. There are very few screws, but it's important to find them before yanking on something so you aren't in danger of breaking something. Not for everyone, but once you gain a little knowledge it's easy. Tesla almost exclusively uses Torx fasteners everywhere, so very few tools can take the car apart pretty fast. In my younger years I worked in the automotive aftermarket industry and gained a lot of knowledge of such things that's very useful now.
I wish Tesla would release the service manuals to everyone (besides MA residents), as they likely contain the R&A (Removal & Assembly) procedures for everything in the car. It's silly for them not to.
Eventually someone will start selling CD's on Ebay since the market demand is there. It's better for Tesla to step up instead of encouraging the pirate sellers.

I couldn't agree more. It's much more fun to dig into some of these minor issues myself, plus I get the chance to learn about the car. Hopefully some of these manuals are made available at a somewhat reasonable price.

I've been getting a very strong "chemical" smell in my P85 in the mornings when I first get into the car. It smells like the A/C, but I'm not sure. Is anyone else experiencing this? It's just started happening about a week ago, before that, never once. Now it's every morning.

I would get that checked out immediately. IF it is your AC leaking freon you could be at serious risk. I don't mean to scare you, but the words "Chemical smell" and AC are not things you want to hear. Freon is a very dangerous inhalation hazard.

Yup, they keep a very close eye on this thread. I received a call after both times I posted about my sunroof issue, as well as a call when I mentioned the UMC getting a bit hot at 40A in the TM forums. They obviously want to keep customers happy, and that's great. Though, personally, since getting the car serviced isn't particularly easy for Tesla to do (Michigan outlaws manufacturer service centers and I've been told they only have two rangers for all of Michigan and Cleveland is understaffed), I prefer to try waiting until the annual service and to call them if I have any pressing concerns or any issues that can be resolved remotely. Perhaps, given how rampant FUD journalism is, it's the public comments about issues that they're trying to minimize, and we know how much we like to post about anything and everything unusual related to our cars, good or bad.
Here is a better written article about 134a. It is still a danger in a confined space like a car. Personally, I still wouldn't want to be in a car with even a small amount of this chemical leaking out.
Yep. They just emailed me today. They want me to bring it in and let it sit over night so they can check it out. I did not plug in or charge the car last night, and this morning there was no smell. So it may be a process that is happening to cool the batteries over night. It has been pretty warm here lately. Hopefully nothing too serious.

Hmmm, not sure what I am doing right but I have signed in to the Model S Tune-In app with my Tune-In account and it works quite well except for the occasional drop-outs that don't seem to always be related to signal strength. I can then use the Tune-In app on my phone to search for Podcasts and save in favourites, which then conveniently appear under Internet - Tune In - My Favourites in the Media App in the car.

So now Slacker is spontaneously logging out on me. I came out to the car and noticed the favorites were different. (I subscribe to Slacker Premium). Somehow the car had logged me out and logged me in to the default Tesla account. So I logged back in to my Premium account. A couple hours later, the music stops and the Media screen says I need to log in to Slacker. Go to the settings and sure enough I'm logged out. So I log back in. Same thing happens a day or so later!

When in the Portland Oregon area the first week of June we had to take our S into service to replace a tire pressure sensor. Our S was delivered in 2012 so it has original versions of the sensors. Just this week it is happening again. Now we are scheduled for a visit to the Palo Alto service center in early September. I'm planning to ask them if they could just replace them all at that visit.
The annoying thing is that we will have to deal with an alert on the console for the whole month of August...
It is interesting that a scheduled apt is now a month out in Palo Alto.

I just checked my car and it's felt on the bottom there, so not like something accidentally left there from the factory. Judging from Wikipedia, it would appear in this case that it reduces noise from vibrations or rubbing. I would suggest having service fix it when convenient or if it starts bothering you.

Hi, I also have the shudder on my 70D. It's about 2 months old. It only started after the last software update (about 1 week ago). As with the previous posts, the shudder is pretty noticeable when i coast. It doesn't do it all the time but about 90% of the time. I'm thinking it will go away at the next update. I used to have a high pitched whine coming from the front left of the car after that previous update. Went away with the last update... They should test these a bit more. Still love the car and think it is the best, by far, car I have owned. Now, if they could make them smaller, I'd be in heaven. Thanks. Bertrand

Front wheels inner brake pads jammed - on both wheels!
I had a indication that I had a brake problem when I noticed some brake dust buildup in my front wheels. That dust buildup was not much on the rear wheels. So, I jacked the car, and tried to spin my front wheel by hand. I got some resistance. Here are the picture of one my wheel taken off and shows before and after cleaning it.
So I unbolted the caliper, and tried to move the pads - one pad (the outer) was slightly jammed, the other (the inner one) was solidly jammed by galvanic corrosion. The pad is made of a steel plate that rubs with the aluminum caliper body. In the presence of salt water, this spells for galvanic corrosion. The inner side pads of both front calipers were highly jammed on my 2013 S.
I had to use a hammer and strike repeateadly with a wood block the inner pad to succeed to remove it. Following pictures shows the whitish aluminum oxide on the caliper mixed with rust from the pad.
I did pass the pads on a bench grinder with a wire wheel to remove the rust on the sides of the pads. Then I applied some paint (to prevent more rusting) and let dry while I cleaned the calipers.

My January 2013 S60's front passenger door handle gave up the ghost on Friday. E-mailed service and set up an appointment already. I was hoping it wouldn't happen as I liked the original handles, but alas, such is life. In all likelihood they'll switch to the new design that doesn't extend completely--I wonder if they fixed the puddle light issue, guess I'll find out.
I will say, I have been very impressed with this car. Apart from the issue with creaking from the sunroof that was fixed early on, and a proactive replacement of my 12v battery (Service e-mailed me about logs) I have had no major problems with the car.
In fact, the only thing that keeps recurring is the alignment tends to drift right too much, even on level roads, and hey, if that is the only recurring issue I have, I don't mind having an occasional realignment.

Hoping for some guidance/someone to talk me off the ledge here...
We took delivery of our 70D on 7/17 and it worked flawlessly for about the first 6 weeks (including a road trip from Colorado Springs, CO to Park City, UT). Since that time, I've experienced some significant technical issues that I will outline here, but the car has been operable:
1. LTE connectivity - this was the first thing I noticed. Car would come off WiFi at home and then just go to nothing. Seemed odd considering the fact that I had great signal strength for the previous 6 weeks, including some fairly surprising spots while on said road trip. I believe this was related to the software update around he same time that seemed to cause shuddering and LTE issues for some. I also noticed the shuddering, but didn't come up as a red flag for me.
2. Connectivity to iPhone app - I noticed as well that the app would just spin and spin, saying "trying to wake-up the car" and getting nowhere. As I already noticed the connectivity issue, this wasn't much of a surprise, but an annoyance as I was trying to put the car in valet mode after leaving it with a restaurant valet and forgetting to do so prior.
3. Internet radio sporadically working - using Slacker, one song would play and then just spin as if trying to download the next. I pressed the button to advance to the next song and one more would play, and then spinning again. Eventually I would see a error asking me to log into my Slacker account, which of course it already was, but trying to "reconnect" the account would fix it again for one song, and so on.
[Around this point is when I first called the Tech Support hotline. I was driving at the time and they said there was nothing hat they could do until I got to my location, but confirmed it showed Offline for them as well. The rep gave me instructions to perform a soft reboot by pressing the steering wheel scroll wheels and cycling through to the T logo, rinse and repeat, once I got to my destination. Ironically, I was going for window tint where the car would be sitting in a shop for a few hours. Would have been nice to have connectivity with my iPhone app so I could keep an eye on it.]
I attempted the soft reboot twice at the shop, did not seem to fix the issue as I still had no connectivity through the app. However, my Slacker seemed to be working better or at least was playing a song when I exited the car.
4. GPS stopped working a couple days after I first noticed the connectivity issue. Red arrow no longer tracking my location, but instead appeared permanently fixed at my home where it last worked. This was a much more significant issue than I first realized because of all the things tied into GPS. For example, Homelink stopped appearing in my driveway because of course the car didn't know where it was. I attempted another soft reboot while at home and on WiFi, and was able to connect to the car through the app, but GPS did not come back.
5. Car clock 2 hours off (on Eastern while in Mountain) - using the phone app, I was now able to see the car's location was showing somewhere outside of Quebec City, which explained the Eastern time zone and clock issue. The car was at home in Colorado. Another soft reboot and at least the time came back, but GPS was stuck at home.
I called Tech Support again and got a service appt scheduled. No small task as the closest one is an hour away from me and the only appt they could offer me was at 3:30 on a Tuesday, which means leaving work and a lot of time on my part. No evening or weekend appts are available EVER, per the woman at the SC who I talked to. Not very customer friendly in my book and I was pretty disappointed to hear that.
When I pulled in for my appt, the car connected immediately to the SC WiFi and showed the correct location in Denver. When the advisor came out, we drove around the shop and the red arrow followed. Of course it did. Because why wouldn't it work perfectly now at the SC? They pulled the LTE fuse to reset just to be sure, and I was fine all the way and for a day after. But guess what doesn't work anymore? That's right, my GPS. If I reboot, I *may* get one trip out of it. But when I park, location is again frozen when I drive off to come back home. For example, I ran to Whole Foods in Colo Spgs last night, parked and then drove home. The car today is still showing me somewhere in Colorado Springs with just a solid gray screen (not at home, outside of the city). And guess what's also back? My current time is 8:47AM and the car is showing 12:47AM. I'm attaching a photo of the screen for reference.
This weekend was Labor Day and we took a mini road trip to Glenwood Springs. Here again the GPS issue is bigger than just Nav because the car no longer knows where it needs to stop for a charge, causing some significant range anxiety on my part. There were some folks on a test drive stopped at one of the superchargers with us and asked how we liked the car. I found myself for the first time saying, I'm not in love, which is a little bit heartbreaking after spending 100K and being a shareholder.
On another note, I called and escalated this issue again on Friday before the weekend to the SC. It's Wednesday morning and still nothing. Trying to call them goes to voicemail, as I'm finding to be the norm.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar...thanks.
-Brie

Ug, sorry to hear. It does seem that all the problems appear related to connectivity, LTE/3G issues - from the time, maps drawing, internet radio, and app connectivity. Does the Navigation in the instrument cluster work ok when you use navigation, or are you not able to get it to even accept an address? They are independent with the one in IC being Garmin pre-downloaded maps already...
Hopefully Tesla can figure this out for you soon!

roof panel not aligned
Hi guys, just got a P85D delivered last week. Couple of glitches like random sightings of "parking assist not available" (during driving) and charge port not opening, but both disappeared for now. However there is one that is degrading the sleek car look, see the picture below. The black plastic panel that is seated before the pano roof is not well aligned (on both sides). Would you have any suggestions on how to stick it without using a glue ?
BTW anybody has any info on LTE connectivity in Europe? Hope my car should have the hardware and we are just waiting for the software..

My car delivered in June has this same issue, but only on the driver's side. I also have the passenger rear window making wind noise, and not rolling up properly when at speed. I also had a horrible buzzing noise in the far left air vent as soon as I got on the highway after pickup. This was so bad it's clear it wasn't even QC'd. I fixed this myself as soon as I got home, it was the mounting screw not fully installed by about a turn. I am annoyed that I had to do this on such an expensive car, but I'm waiting on the rest until I can get into a SC. God knows when that will be here in CA, I hear there are months of backlogs.

Battery cooling and A/C - driving home from work (30 minutes) btw I have it in a covered spot the entire time - about halfway through my trip the a/c slowed down and warmed up. got a warning message on my middle screen telling me a/c is being diverted to battery cooling. This lasted for about 5 minutes then the a/c came back. Got home, plugged it in. left 30 minutes later to the store and it happened again.
I took it in, and they said system was fine, and is expected to keep battery cool around 70 degree range, however it happened a few more times in the past month. I looked on the board and don't see to many more issues at the same frequency I had. I do live out in phoenix and yesterday it did happen and we had a lower 100 degree temp, I had the A/C at 70 - 72 degrees, with fan at 8-9 speed.
Any one else can fill in on this type of issue would be helpful.

In Phoenix, I think this is normal when the battery has been heat-soaked. I see it supercharging from time to time. The A/C compressor isn't much larger than one in a Prius, and it's got a lot more thermal mass in the Model S battery to cool in addition to the cabin.

I had a similar problem. I was driving from Yuma to Gila Bend SpC. I had AC in range mode and I arrived with zero miles remaining. Temperature was around 110 deg F. After I plugged in, it took about 15 minutes for charging rate to ramp up. I had the Vehicle Systems Being Cooled message. I took the car in for its annual service a few weeks later. Had a major issue with my S60 today that required towing. Problems started after I approached the driver door and the handles did not auto-present as usual. No problem, it sometimes happens. I unlocked the car with my fob and got into the driver's seat. I step on the brake pedal, nothing. I hit the brakes several times again and start seeing an error on the dash stating "Car needs service, may not be able to drive". I hit the brake pedal again and able to shift the car into reverse and am on my way home. No errors on the way home. I approach my home and decide to drive to the community mailbox to pick up the mail. As I slow to a stop, the car needs service message pops up again. I hesistantly put the car into park, get out of the get, get the mail.
I get back in the car, step on the brake again, getting the same error "Car needs service, may not be able to drive". Additionally, it states something to the effect of "12V battery low, car my power down unexpectedly". I cannot shift out of park this time and am essentially stuck half a block from him. I contact the local Tesla service center, they say that they sees the errors from my car and think there may be a problem with the battery coolant. They instruct me to call Tesla Roadside Assistance to have my car towed and delivered to the service center tomorrow morning. While on the phone with roadside assistance, I am able to get my car moving again and park it in my driveway. Less than an hour later, the tow service takes it away. The tow guy says he's tows a few Teslas recently for a similar issue of not being able to start, "must be the cold weather" he adds.
I'm expecting a call from the service center in the morning to see if they can fix it or may have give me a loaner, or which they are short on at the moment and may need to get me an Enterprise rental car instead. What do you guys think? It is a simple as the 12V battery going back or something else?

Cold weather? In Florida? Pssh.
If it weren't for the comment from service on the battery coolant, I'd say it sounds like you may have a bad 12V battery. There was a bad batch I think in late 2013 or early 2014 that, to my understanding, Tesla replaced for everyone on an opportunity basis (TSB) if not by necessity. What VIN sequence or build date?
Mine has been going great for 17 months, through one moderately frigid winter (~2 weeks with negative lows, as low as -15F), so I would think my car is pretty solid in that regard. (knock on wood)

If the coolant gets low it will let you know, if some component overheats because of insufficient cooling, you will first see a power limit, much like the regen limit or a low battery limit, that manifests as the dashed yellow line. If the temperature continues to rise, it will then do a "Car shutting down, please pull over safely" and then "Call Tesla service".
The 12v battery error happens anytime the car is awake for a few minutes without the DC-DC converter enabled. This means it detects a low voltage. The main contactors probably opened due to the fault and then began pulling down the 12v battery until you got the error. Even with a brand new 12v battery, that will happen in only a few minutes if for some reason the car doesn't close it's contactors and begin supplying power to the 12v rail.
So whatever it was, doesn't sound like a coolant issue. Please let us know what they find!

Oops, forgot to change my location. I live in the Pacific Northwest now.
They didn't tell me much today, only that they needed to order some parts. I'll have to ask for specifics when I pick it up.

I finally received my S60 back four days after having it towed. They had to replace the battery coolant heater. Took a while to get the part. Just did a range change for my trip to Whistler this weekend but noticed the max charge is only 185 miles of range. I guess it must be due to the cold weather, 30s outside, slightly warmer in my garage. I'm not sure I've seen the full charge range this low though.

Having both LTE connectivity and GPS issues suggests some kind of problem with the antenna or signal pathways common to the radios, or something interfering with normal radio function. Or, it could be an LTE radio issue alone, as internet problems could adversely affect GPS (not necessarily, and I don't know what Tesla has or hasn't done, but it is a possible side-effect on some systems).
The other symptoms (slacker cutting out, time being off, app can't connect) would occur if you had a poor/unreliable internet.
Having wifi would temporarily cure these issues, of course.

Driver's side door handle
Sadly, just a couple months into ownership, the first door handle failure has already occurred, on the driver's side door.
First sign something was wrong: I noticed that the door handle was sometimes trying to close on my hand, after I stepped out and was using it to close the door. Sounds worse than it was - the mechanism feels "proofed" against pinching, and would just softly press against your hand. But it was clearly not right. Then within a few days the handle was stuck closed.
This many years into production, for a brand new car to have one fail this quickly, when the door handles have always been a well-known, nay, notorious reliability problem from the beginning, makes me feel like they have an even bigger problem with failing to iterate/improve their way out of a design flaw.
I feel like my experience eerily mirrors Consumer Reports feedback overall. They describe a superlative car. Also they ding it for reliability issues (and Consumer Reports' own car was reported to have had a door handle issue - heh). They also note its great support organization and 97% happy/would-by-again owners. Sure enough, I was dreading a few weeks of back and forth with service centers, but instead, Tesla did a valet swap for a loaner within 24 hours, and had a cleaned, totally fixed car back to me 24 hours after that. Awesome. They went absoultely above and beyond to meet me at a convenient time and place both times. It's an impressive service organization, and it shows how customer service can trump many other things. The whole experience was so surprisingly good, it actually left me happier than I started.

Picked up my Model S yesterday afternoon. As soon as I got it home, the passenger door started to pop open when the car unlocks. Called Tesla and I have an appointment for Friday AM. They sounded really concerned and wanted to get it fixed ASAP. I still freaking love the car, so it's hard to be upset.

This was common with early cars and the Gen 1 door handles. I had the problem myself. Tesla replaced all 4 handles with the new style and my problem is gone. Surprised to see it still cropping up on newer cars.

Even if you get the failure rate down to .1%, that's still 1 car out of 1000 that will have the issue, so I'm not too worried....
I did take a friend for a ride in the car and she thought that the door popping open was one of the coolest features. She was pretty deflated when I told her it was actually a bug .

That explains where Tesla got the idea for the Model X's auto-presenting door.

As I was driving tonight, each time I reached a complete stop at a stop light / stop sign, I got a beeping and visual feedback telling me to stop. Seems like a false park assist warning. Sensors were perfectly clear. People have mentioned rebooting the instrument cluster as a possible fix? Any other ideas?

I was able to capture a video of what I'm calling a malfunctioning parking sensor tonight -- and there is a possibility that it was causing false lane departure warnings as well.
Anyway, I have an email out to the local service center to see if they can schedule me for a fix. Again, the sensor is completely free and clear from any debris.

Two days ago, my driver's door spontaneously opened. Yesterday, it happened again. When I got out and closed the door, the handle stayed out. It is now stuck in presented position and I'm unable open the door from the outside. I entered from the passenger side and the door opens normally using the interior handle but locks shut with the handle sticking out when closed again. I have a call into the service centre. Unnerving to think the door might pop open while driving.

By "opened" do you mean that it unlocked while moving and actually moved out and away from the door frame? If so, by how much?

I'm worried about this as I still have all 4 Gen 1 handles on my early VIN and nearly at 50K miles. Never had any issues though so maybe I'm good?

On both occasions I had just stopped the car and put it into Park. The door popped open as if I had pulled the handle.... so a couple of inches I would say. I heard from service and they advise that since this only happened when the car was going into Park, that it would not happen when the car is in motion.

All 4 of my Gen 1 handles just got replaced a week ago. The handles themselves were not replaced just the mechanical parts. The rear passenger door handle was acting flaky. It started a few months ago when it would extend, but not allow me to open the door. The light would also not come on. A couple of days later it started working again and I had no problems for about a month and then it started again. The day before I took it in for the replacements, the handle decided to stay extended. Never had the spontaneous door opening problem.
I do like the feel of the newer handle mechanism.

Had my first significantly unsatisfactory SC experience last week. The car was scheduled to have the front DU replaced, the side window alignment fixed and one of the arm rest screws (which I gave them) put back. The seatbelt inspection was scheduled and I asked them to check the tire pressures (which the car reported as 42 all around). They had the car for 3 days. While I had the loaner (a new 90D) I called and asked them to check the rear camera (the 90D camera looked like HD) to see if it was out of focus/working properly. They called on day 2 to say that they were checking the oil level in the DU, it was low, and the noise was now much lower. On day 3 when I picked up the car I found that 1. the front DU noise was now louder than before, 2. the armrest was not fixed, 3. the tires were now at 41 psi, 4. the windows were not aligned properly and 5. the battery was down to 106 miles (I dropped it off at 192). I am not sure what they actually did to the car, but it is NOT fixed. I am really disappointed and not sure where to escalate this to. This visit to the SC was, in my opinion, a total FAIL on Teslas part.
Just under 10K miles on car.

Sorry about the problems... Not a good experience, i agree. If you noticed these things before driving away, did you go back in and question someone? If you noticed them on your way home or once you arrived, did you call the SC and report the failures, or ask for the Service Mgr? ...or of you're just totally disgusted and prefer not to first deal with your local SC Mgr (which you'll eventually have to unless you are willing to drive to another SC), have you called National Customer Service? I suggest those are likely the best paths to proceed before writing a letter to Elon. Good luck.

The SC called tonight to follow up. They are going the check again with engineering back at Tesla and they offered to come pick up the car tomorrow to fix the arm rest. I do appreciate the followup. The staff has always been great. I'll wait for the follow up.

Twice now I got in the car, turned it on by switching into 'R' and as I roll backwards down the driveway, I notice that a window has opened about 4in / 10cm. At least the second time around I am 100% sure that the window was closed when the car was in the driveway (because it was 32F/0C outside and I had pre-heated the car to a comfy 64F/17C - that wouldn't have happened this quickly with an open window). The last three days I carefully checked the windows before starting the car and of course it hasn't happened since... Might be random user stupidity. Not sure, yet.

About 3 or 4 times a week, my left knee will bump the switch for the rear passenger window and either drop it a couple of inches, or all the way if I bump the switch hard enough. At first I was sure there was some "firmware bug" causing this.

Very possible but I also had a bug once where a window would roll down the ~1cm when opening the door, then would not return to original position when closing the door. Then opening and closing the door multiple time would leave the window multiple cm down. I was actually able to get it down all the way. I just had to roll it all the way up then down then up again and it "solved" the issue.
I'd like to note that I had the exact same issue a couple time with my former bmw (coupe with frame-less window).

Was it the right rear window? This happens to me all the damn time. It's my knee bumping the down button for that window when I go to swivel my body around to look back. I'm tempted to make some sort of a control guard that prevents this, it's super annoying!

LOL, I just saw MKnox's knee does the same thing!

I had a problem once where if I was wearing all synthetic clothing, like gym clothes, when it was really cold and dry out I would generate a huge static charge while sitting driving. When I'd get out and touch the door handle I'd discharge a significant shock into the door handle which would activate the window and roll it down a bit.
This was on my 2013 Model S. I since learned to not wear all synthetic clothing in winter and haven't experimented on my newer Model S, but this could also be a cause of mystery window roll down.

Pilot_51
Interesting, that does sort of tie into my experience of it happening only in the winter. However, I only wear cotton clothing and my seats are textile, and it was reversing without my hand/arm near the switch. I also don't recall experiencing static discharge when touching any part of my car.
In my case, I suspect the reason it only happens when it's cold is because whatever is causing the resistance is affected by the temperature. Rubber, which is stiffer when cold, comes to mind as a possible cause.
I got a call from service about this yesterday and the pickup is scheduled for Monday. I bundled in some other things for them to check out, in particular my still-unresolved sunroof issue, which is why it needs to go to the service center (the last ranger who tried fixing it told me it needed to go into service to have the rear glass moved back).

I've never experienced the shock, but wiping the dash with a microfiber cloth can change values on the 17" display. Every instance I've had of the windows rolling down can be attributed to knee position--at least after they took the all windows down by pressing the fob. I had that happen a few times in pouring rain and it's no fun because a second press doesn't roll them up again. It's one feature I'm thankful they removed.

In the Display settings, there is a "Clean Mode" that turns the screen black to allow for cleaning. In order to return from clean mode, you have to hold a button down for three seconds. Very handy feature for wiping down a dirty screen.

I wanted to follow up with this. My service center installed a whole new set of front sensors (6) for me and they are all working perfectly. Kudos to Tesla for fixing this problem.

I have a portable battery pack and solar panels that I put on the dash when parked outside during the day and I've experienced similar behavior when the USB cable touches the screen while taking the panels down. I don't think it's static in this case, but it does seem to trigger actions that aren't very near where the cable touches. I've noticed that USB cables will cause touches on other touchscreens (phones, tablets) as well.

I'm the opposite. I regularly get "zapped" by the car getting out (same with my other cars too), but never had a single problem cleaning the dash or displays with microfiber cloths. In fact, I don't even bother with the "Cleaning Mode" they added.

I've never had a problem with cleaning the display. It's wiping the top of the dash that will sometimes cause the problem. Doesn't happen all the time and I understand there is fix but I haven't bothered to do anything about it.

No problem (for me) with the top of the dash either. Depending on where/when I use either a microfiber cloth, a Swiffer brush or (my favorite) a California Duster.
