Model S Reservation Tally part 8

Still says "In Production". DS said the car was undergoing inspection.

I am guessing we will be on the same truck, mine just switched to "In Production" in the last few hours also.

Yea! Got out of the Queued for Production Purgatory today and moved to "In Production!"

    Spreadsheet updated.

Me too, just went into production 12/1 (today). There's gonna be a gaggle of us over at Minneapolis Tesla...
  • Dec 1, 2014
    3s-a-charm
Here's a new one... received a call from Tesla today saying that I can't have different coloured wheels for my winter and summer set. When asked why it was to "streamline production". I wanted the grey for winter and the silver for summer. So I switched them to both silver because I don't really care that much and prefer the silver but that's a pretty odd request considering it really has little to do with the "production" of the vehicle.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    Firewired
Checking every 15 minutes hasn't worked to "push" me into production status yet
  • Dec 1, 2014
    MarcG
That's interesting since you entered production 11/21... wonder why some that also entered production on 11/21 were already done on 12/26 and others (including yours) aren't.

    A watched pot...
  • Dec 1, 2014
    gpetti
That's unlikely but they might be part of different build batches if there is such a thing. It does seem very odd to me, and given how long the order has been confirmed, a bit cheeky. Maybe they are being incentivized to find efficiencies and now they are clutching at straws, even at the risk of annoying customers or having customers cancel options.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    sundoc
This makes absolutely no sense... I wonder what the logic is.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    andrewket
Ummm... What? I would escalate this. It doesn't make any sense what so ever. The only thing wrong will be the graphic of your car on the 17". I think someone has their wires crossed. They don't even offer a grey snow package!
  • Dec 1, 2014
    Jgdixon
FYI I don't think the winter package comes from the factory, I think they are added here.
I would be interested to know what they quote you for the rims on their own. The full package sure had a good price.
I bought nearly new factory rims here on the market place.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    GetAmped
Actually, in the configurator when you select 21" rims for summer if you then select the 21" Winter Package it states that the rims will be matched to your summer rims.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    Jgdixon
Also guys for what it's worth I was told our cars need new second generation TPMS the older ones don't work.
I think they are called continental.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    NOLA_Mike
I can confirm/collaborate that this also doesn't work for pushing it from in production to prepping for delivery...
  • Dec 1, 2014
    sundoc
Hmm interesting. I picked up my rims and TPMS from Tesla just the other day. So I'm assuming they'd give me what works with our cars.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    GetAmped
    @ jgdixon

Another example of everyone at Tesla not having their information straight I guess. I called Fremont sales last week to change to the 21" Summer rims and they asked if I wanted to have the 21's on the car or the 19" Winters. I had said the Winters and the rep said the 21's would then be shipped in the back of the P85D. I think it makes sense that the rims/tires would be sourced at the SC versus shipping with the car, but again this is not what they told me.

Mine just changed to "In Production" I've updated the spread sheet. I was told mid December by my DS. Have any other Chicago deliveries been given a delivery date yet?
  • Dec 1, 2014
    commasign
Good question. Mine did enter production later in the day than others did on 11/21. Assuming the factory wasn't open on 11/22 or 11/23, today is actually "Day 5" of production so still within the usual timetable.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    MarcG
I think the factory operates 6 days a week, so Saturdays should be included.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    commasign
Ah. Ok. So far none of the other 11/21's (besides the first 2) have changed to complete status. Fingers crossed tomorrow is the big day.
  • Dec 1, 2014

Scott, ours went into production today as well. So they will probably be delivered off the same truck? See sheet for details. No delivery date.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    wk057
I'm actually kind of surprised mine hasn't switched from "In Production" to something further yet. Been "In Production" for 10 days now (total days, not necessarily working days)...
  • Dec 1, 2014
    LetsGoFast
My theory is that we just haven't hit refresh often enough yet. I scheduled my delivery today for 12/13. However, even though I said I need to do it on a Saturday, if they get it in early in the week I'll just have to take a day off work and get it sooner. My DS checked a bunch of stuff and told me that it was going to complete tomorrow or Wednesday and would arrive in North Carolina next week sometime.

I really, really want someone to take delivery and start writing really long winded reviews with millions of pictures.
  • Dec 1, 2014

Oh, I forgot Tesla was now offering 21" snow tires. The 19's only come in silver.

Yup I'm really curious about little minor difference in the D vehicles like the charge port door, especially the stuff they haven't told us about (I'm assuming that's not the only difference).

If we tried that in Maryland, the first thing that would happen is that the cars would fall into the lake... assuming there was any ice to start with. :)

Mine went into production on the 24th. Still shows in production. As of mid last week my DS didn't even give me a firm week of date. I get the feeling she hasn't even tried to figure it out....

Oh oh. Are you saying that the Ds have new TPMS? I bought winter wheels/tires back in about January this year. They worked on my P85+ so I was assuming that they would work on my P85D. If that is not the case I need to find some new TPMS. Not sure if Tire rack will have new ones or if Tesla sells them separately.

    - - - Updated - - -

You're going to need that insane mode.
  • Dec 1, 2014
    koreth
I'm holding off buying new tires (high-performance 19" summer ones in my case, since I live in a non-snowy area where there are enough potholes to ruin the 21" wheels) until I actually have the car, or at least until people who ordered 19" wheels get their cars and report exactly what the tire specs are. At this point I'm not confident enough in the accuracy of the information we have about the car to be sure I'd order the right thing.
  • Dec 2, 2014
    andrewket
Same here. Not only that, but I had to buy another set to sell with my P85+. Had I known I would have removed the sensors from the wheels I kept since they won't work anymore :(. On the plus side, maybe this means we'll finally get PSI readings instead of just "a tire is low".
  • Dec 2, 2014
    lolachampcar
Has anyone confirmed this TPS thing with Tesla as I am in the process of buying wheels/tires for my PD with TPS already installed?

I found it odd, really that Tesla allows you to roll in winter wheels/tires into a lease. My DS said they can do the grey winters at the SC but I would have to pay for them separately. Since I didn't really care (and was honestly second guessing the grey wheels on my black car) I took the opportunity to consider this fate deciding for me.

Secondly... I'm really torn on adding a clear Xpel or similar considering I know I will only have this car for 3 years then trade in for something else once the lease is up... Maybe just hood, front bumper and mirrors?
  • Dec 2, 2014
    Jgdixon
I was told the new sensors are on cars above 56000 vin
  • Dec 2, 2014
    OConnorStP
That's weird. I thought getting a VIN was pretty much synonymous with getting into the production queue. And your order-dates are only a few days later than mine. Have you checked with the Tesla folks? Maybe "My Tesla" is lagging reality?
  • Dec 2, 2014
    Cottonwood
It looks like the "Model S Specialist" has a little more visibility than the dashboard. Here is part of the e-mail that I got this morning asking to schedule a delivery time and if I needed to do anything else:

Yes, it moved into the main stages of production now and is currently in paint. I will be sending you the final paperwork and amount due shortly.

I'm extremely skeptical of this statement. There may indeed be new TPMS on the vehicles but explaining when a hardware change went into cars based on VIN is nonsense. Cars are not produced in VIN order. Hardware changes are made based on when vehicles go through production. My September 2014 produced car was 56107, it did not have Autopilot hardware. I saw 55xxx in the parking lot at the Seattle Service Center that had Autopilot.

My September 2014 car (again 56107) had a small box from Continental under the front right wheel well just above the wheel. I believe this was a tire pressure receiver. But I don't think the vendor of this piece of hardware was new then.

I'm really wondering if this isn't just someone trying to explain that some sensors won't work and that you need specific ones on the Model S, not that the sensors have changed from previous Model S vehicles.

Hopefully, everyone can get some clarification from their DS on this.

Well I'm in a similar boat but my production had been complete since last Wednesday. My DS said he'd get back to me first thing yesterday. I emailed him around noon and he replied quickly saying he didn't have an update yet and that he'd get back to me as soon as he heard something. So far, nothing.
  • Dec 2, 2014

Perhaps tesla found something in the manufacturing process that they decided needed to be corrected.
  • Dec 2, 2014

Perhaps. I would just like an update :)
  • Dec 2, 2014
    electrish
I don't know if this may indicate some kind of problem.

I also grew concerned when my car hadn't entered production yet, despite a tentative completion date early next week, around 12/8, so I emailed my DS. He told me that I was pushed back to completion during the following week of 12/15, which will probably jeopardize my initially planned delivery date of 12/22. So either they encountered some problems or the initial production schedule was too optimistic.

Ughh! You are killing me. I have been watching your production & delivery closely as your order/confirmation dates are closest to mine. I am still in the "queue" so I know my delivery will be after yours.

Got the final MVPA from my DS, DocuSign-ed it and took care of the downpayment via ACH. Wow, that was easy!

Car's still "In Production" though so, am waiting on an update from the DS. Fwiw, the final MVPA has 12/10 as the expected delivery date.
  • Dec 2, 2014
    AlMc
I received mine also last night. My DS and I had already agreed on a Dec 30th delivery date about two weeks ago and it is still that date on the MVPA. I am still 'In Production queue'. I do not necessarily trust the home page for accuracy.
  • Dec 2, 2014
    electrish
I'm crying already, because all the "December delivery" P85Ds are presumably ahead of us and progression seems to be slow. So far no 12/2 production starts on the spreadsheet! Doesn't bode well for us; maybe our cars will be on the same truck, they'll just drop off mine before yours. Good luck!
  • Dec 2, 2014
    MarcG
Interesting, I was told no DocuSign for me although I'm also taking delivery in Fremont and also financing with a downpayment I paid via ACH - unless you're leasing?

Same here, still in production since 11/25. My final MVPA, which was uploaded to My Tesla on 11/25 right around the time it changed to "In Production", indicates a 12/08/2014 delivery. I'm hoping that means we'll still see "Production Complete" before the end of this week!

Apparently they can view the production status in more detail. Last week she was able to see that my car was in "paint". But at this point, I'm not getting my hopes up. If it's 12/4, great. If it's not, I trust it was for a good reason.

talked to my DS. He assures me that my car is ready for transport but has still not left California so will definitely not be in Calgary by the 4th. At this point I'm not sure if I will even see it this week or if it will be more like the original timing.
  • Dec 2, 2014

About the downpayment, I'm financing with an outside lender and not via Tesla. DS initiated the DocuSign process as soon as I gave him the lender and financed amount information.

DS promised an update on Thursday about delivery ETA.

Heard from my DS. He said my car is currently body in white. In other words, pre-paint, several days away from completion. Why the dashboard says it entered production on 11/25-26 he couldn't say. My 12/12 delivery date is still possible, but is at risk.

Will post TPMS update in the new thread.
  • Dec 2, 2014

Glad to hear it's done! Wonder why the status reverted to "In Production" then... sounds like the status updates are all over the map and can't necessarily be relied upon.

Ah ok that's probably why the DocuSign is needed then. I'm financing through Tesla so they said no need to DocuSign.

Hmm interesting, I hope things progress quickly from now. I really wish my DS could get that info too. I'll bug him again now and ask him to try harder to find such info.

Makes sure you add a check for after it goes to completion, if it goes back to production again as happened with mine. Serves me right for not being very sympathetic and bragging about how quickly mine went to Complete. I'm really hoping that my DS is right and the car is actually ready for transport and not in some production black hole. Can't help, wondering if they didn't discover some fault.

OK, I finally have some useful information to share.

First, for those who aren't getting enough detailed information from their delivery specialists about specific production stages, you can call the service center where your car is being delivered and select the option that says "new vehicle delivery" - at the Fremont SC this is option 4 (option 1 is for general info, 2 is Service, 3 is Sales, 5 is Parts). If the local delivery team doesn't pick up, you'll be transferred to the headquarters' "inside delivery team" who can also give you the exact production stage of your car.

Second, I found out from the local delivery team in Fremont that although there are no problems with the production of the P85D, the factory is taking an extra amount of time to inspect the initial batch of P85D's to make sure everything is per spec and operating as expected since it's a new model. In my case, my car has been in production for 7 days (including T-giving holidays + a weekend) but is already in General Assembly, which is the final stage after paint and before testing begins. They expect P85D inspections to take 2-3 days instead of the usual 1 day.

So don't be alarmed if the production time seems longer than usual, they're just taking extra precautions to make sure our cars are running properly before being delivered. The online status does not necessarily reflect this so there could be differences between which stages truly indicate completion (I'm not sure "Production Complete" means assembly is done and they're currently inspecting, or inspection done and the service center is prepping it for delivery - I think it's the latter).

There you have it. I know it's frustrating not to know exactly what's going on, but I trust we're in good hands and just need to be patient. Tesla wants to deliver P85Ds as much as we want them to, if not more.
  • Dec 2, 2014
    gpetti
Thanks, lots of useful information there. This gives me some cause to be alarmed about lack of inspection as my car was originally completed in 5 days flat. The apparent reversion back to production is hopefully a system glitch as I am being assured that my car is actually awaiting transport. That being said it will be a full week since completion by the time it is shipped out so presumably some of that time is part of the extra inspection. As somebody else pointed out, these are probably very fun to "inspect". Anyway, I'm told now that my car will arrive (presumably with a batch of other cars bound for Western Canada) in Vancouver on Friday. This means that my delivery date will be close to the original date but most likely December 9th - I'll update the spread sheet.
  • Dec 2, 2014

I wouldn't be alarmed. I think they flipped your status to Production Complete stage too quickly and probably wanted to do more inspection before releasing it to the service center. Good luck with the delivery, keep us posted!

Speaking of the spreadsheet, Andrew could you please sort again since there seem to be new production start & complete dates lower down?

Glad to hear Mike! I'm curious to know how long this general assembly step takes. Hopefully not more than a couple of days. Keep us posted when you get to Production Complete!

Spoke with my DS today. Just FYI - reconfirmed 10/24. Slated for "late December" delivery. Sitting in the production queue right now. He said my car will go into production next week and be completed by the end of the week (seemed optimistic). Still expects a chance he could have it out to Columbus by 12/22, but it will be tight. Said there have been a few delays on the first cars that rolled out because of some little diddly things (stickers, inspections etc). Had nothing to do with the real meat of the car. I think once they get used to the final touch ups these things should move out pretty quick.
  • Dec 2, 2014
    svp6
My guess is that they have some issues beyond what is discussed here and they slowed down significantly the production of P85D - as per the spreadsheet no cars entered production today (12/02). Probably better to stop and make sure cars are OK rather than rush and deliver subpar products. Does not make waiting any easier....
  • Dec 2, 2014

Sorry for the bad joke. In all seriousness, I've read on the TM forum and from another member on this one who PM'd me directly that local deliveries scheduled for this week have been pushed out. My DS was looking at a couple of different "screens" one that I can't remember that said something about routing and the other one said "ready for transport" which sounds promising but given everyone else' delays and the fact that it say "In Production" again on my dashboard - we'll see!

From what I'm reading there do seem to be a lot of Canadian P85D orders. (or just a lot of Canadians in this thread).

I'm thinking of ordering one late this week or early next week, but want to take delivery next year for 2016 Tax Credit. Taking Delivery on Jan 2nd would be ideal methinks.

Can't wait to see what the next gen seats are like, and have a test ride (My local TM store is getting one this Friday, and I'm hopefully selling my S550 by the end of the week too).

There is the mellow well mannered Canadian we all know and love and then------

    there are the ones ordering P85Ds :) :) :)

Yah, GPetti, you know who I'm talking about. I'm sooooo jealous.

Might be a dumb question but how does the production get sequenced? By order of VIN or by batches such as similar color/options? Mine is schedule for late Dec, not really in a huge hurry but understanding the process is fascinating to me :)

RP, it is prime numbers first. Then those ending with the current age of Elon, 43, Then red next. States ending with an 'a' next. Every 40th one is for Canada - east to west. white next then they use a magic 8-ball and run through what is left to determine the final order.

It's December. Grey first, but only with carbon trim.

Heard from my DS this morning. Car is in General Assembly. I think she is setting low expectations for me but she scheduled me for delivery on the 17th. Seems like an awful long time to get from CA to Chicago.

I just received a note from my lending bank that my delivery will be Friday, December 12th. I haven't confirmed this with Tesla yet. I believe I ordered my vehicle on 10/10.

Yeah, waiting for the car making me crazy  Don't know what you're jealous about, at this rate your beautiful 2015 P85D will be ready same time as mine. Anyway, in the meantime you're driving my original ICE dream car. I'm driving my son's manual 2005 Ford Escape with a heavy clutch and a slight smell of mold.

LOL. I just sold my ICE to a dealer for a steal I think but didn't care too much. Delivering it to them next week then I go on vacation before the D is delivered.

Gpetty our our cars will be nearly identical other than colors of exterior/interior/trim. Will be good to compare. I'm really going on a limb with the grey interior as I normally hate grey but this one looks light enough to be close to white from what I've seen.

You our will be the first D in Calgary - congrats!

Just got called too. Delivery pushed back. No ETA.

    Look at it this way:
Although Tesla is working under huge pressure to deliver 33.000 cars in 2014, Elon is doing the right thing.
Cars that are not good enough to pass his high standards are not being delivered to customers.

If necessary, they can make as many RWD units for US buyers now as possible to make the number. I don't think some initial P85D buyers waiting a week would mind letting those who ordered in August or September get their cars by end of year.

Hmmm. I'm not sure if this is good or bad. It's excellent that EM is concerned enough that he involves himself directly in the first batch. I'm concerned, though, that this is an indicator of potential problems down the road. EM, as the final QA guy, may be able to catch the obvious flaws, but he's not going to catch the more subtle issues that might result in failures of the front drive unit - or of the other new mechanical and electronic bits that are new and unique to the P85D. :frown: I'm sure there are a lot of people in the plant sweating right now.

Personally, I'd rather wait a bit and NOT get a lemon.

It's certainly surprising that they didn't have any of these cars go down the assembly line to reveal whatever the problem is before starting to build customer cars.

They probably did have some built already for testing. But as Elon mentioned in regards to the Model X, some problems only occur in 1 in 100 cars built so even building a few dozen test units isn't sufficient to detect all problems.

Interesting. My bank (Mary at EFCU) told me my delivery date is Dec 30th, but I've heard nothing from Tesla. Do banks call Tesla and ask for delivery dates?

This is incredible. Hard to imagine what would have appeared at this point to cause this kind of embarrassment. Nice to know my car will have an "Inspected by Elon Musk" sticker. I still haven't heard from my DS but my car remains "In Production" since slipping back into that state yesterday.

I spoke too soon. As I was writing this my DS was calling me. I have been told a one week delay. Currently that means the 17th or so.

It may be the date listed on your final MVPA? Mine said "...on or about December 10th".

Just talked with my DS by phone about something unrelated and asked him if delivery dates were still the same as we had planned. He stated "there's definitely been some delays. We might be looking at a few weeks past our initial delivery dates". Gave no indication for reasons.

I too would prefer to get it right instead of pushing out cars with some issues. The big motor companies and financial sector could otherwise put the hurt on Tesla.
