Quebec residents get a $8000 rebate and those from Ontario get $8500. I doubt this under consideration when prioritising deliveries. First in first out will do me just fine.

Congrats on the new ride. Waiting for my first Tesla, a P85D as well. My "scheduled" delivery date is next Thursday the 18th but at this point who knows with the recent delays. Also watch what you type around here because of some moderator interventions since I joined up. Let the waiting continue!

Ordered 10/9 at the LA event
    Confirmed 10/9
    Re-confirmed 10/24
    Went into production 11/25
    EOL 12/1
DS says I actually went into production 12/1, not 11/25 as indicated
As of 12/9, still in production, in general assembly, which normally occurs on day 2-3.

Delivery scheduled 12/12. Not going to happen, unless all of the reporting systems are wrong and my car is already on a truck.

Car must arrive by 12/18-19 for me to be able to take delivery this year and to have it for my road trip. It looks like I may be renting a minivan and paying for gas. Lord help me.

I think it's hard for anyone to tell you how "normal" the wait for your VIN is in light of the fact that your entire ordering through delivery process is definitely shortened as compared to most. I know I waited a lot longer than just a few days after confirming my order to receive my VIN, as did most people here, but that was because no VINs for P85Ds had been assigned yet at that time. The way things are going right now, I wouldn't read too much into when Tesla assigns your VIN. They could conceivably assign your VIN and you could see your car in production the next day. My vehicle got its VIN right around the time everyone else was getting theirs, is tentatively scheduled for delivery the week of December 22, but is not yet in production (as per my dashboard.) I'm learning that Tesla does things when Tesla does things, and it seems best if we try, as best we can, not to worry about the exact timing of it all, as whatever they tentatively predict it is likely to change anyway.

Nearly identical order and confirmation details to you Mike. Also waiting for Delivery. Was initially promised 12/19/14 for Brandon location. Now, my DS doesn't give me a straight answer.

Posting here to get everyone's attention. EFCU is raising their rates on 1/15. If the P85D delay streches into the second half of January, it's not going to be good. Discussion on EFCU and P85D financing in the thread below:

A user in another thread mentioned yesterday that 1) heated steering wheel is most likely standard to P85D; and 2) we may all be in for a surprize.

What if the delay in not about _problems_, but about a new upgrade/new features?

Just joined this forum to add my data point to this helpful thread:

    Ordered: 10/18/2014
    Confirmed: 10/18/2014
    Re-confirmed: 10/24/2014

    Entered Production: 12/9/2014
    VIN: 63640 (received: 11/3/2014)
    Estimated delivery: "Late December"
Scheduled delivery date: December 27, 2014. Was told this in email in 11/4/2014 and then reconfirmed by phone call 12/1/2014. Was told on the phone then that there's a 50% chance that I will get it a few days earlier than that (as early as December 18th or 19th even).
    Actual delivery date: -
    Delivery location: Orlando, FL
    Color: Red
Wheels: 21 in Grey Turbine wheels
Interior: Black NG seats, Piano Black Decor, Black Alcantara head liner
Options: Tech package with auto pilot, air suspension, ultra high fidelity sound, red brake calipers, all glass panoramic roof
This is my first Tesla purchase. I'm buying this for my mother as a Christmas present to replace her red Toyota Corolla after I made a small fortune from coding apps. This will be her first car worth more than $17,000. I would be lying if I didn't say that I'd want to drive this car a bit as well since I love fast cars (my other cars include a LP560-4 and LP700-4).

First, congrats on the P85D, and the good fortune. I wonder if your Mom would prefer a regular S? I speak from experience here. While your intentions are great, your mother may be uncomfortable with the performance and cost of the car. Don't forget the insurance costs, too. I learned this lesson the hard way back in my mid 20's under similar circumstances. My advice is to talk to her and involve her in the process. My .02.

    Congrats again! Nice stable, btw.

Oh, and make sure you add Mom's car to the google spreadsheet. Link located on the first post of this thread.

My DS just told me that they have a big conference call with the factory scheduled at noon and that they hope to have a more clear update on scheduling at that time. She said she'd call me back and let me know what they said once it was done. She did say that my car had completed production some time ago and that it was in a final QA inspection hold, like all the dual motor cars. Contrary to the earlier report, she believes that none have been delivered to customers yet. She did say that she expected my car to be among the first to arrive in North Carolina.

I actually expect to see at least a few used P85Ds go up for sale in the next month for exactly this reason. A number of people posting in this thread and elsewhere have mentioned it's their first performance car; they could find it's too much for them to confidently handle. I'm in this camp myself -- I expect to enjoy and keep it (or I wouldn't have ordered it in the first place) but the thought that I'll be punching above my weight has occurred to me.

I don't want to talk to her about the car, because she doesn't know that I'm buying a Tesla for her yet. But I know that she loves the car, because I've been taking her to car shows to secretly find out what she likes (Model S was her favorite, beating out the BMW i8). Also it's a bit too late to change my order now.

She sat in my Lamborghinis countless times before, so I think she's okay with the performance. She's driven my other sports cars just fine, too. I just tell her to not step on the gas pedal too hard if she doesn't want to go fast. Her only complaints with the Lambos are that they're too loud, have no trunk space, have no back seats, eat too much gas, and that they get too much attention. So this car is perfect for her (she liked my Bentley CGT, too, but that thing's also a gas guzzler).

As for being uncomfortable with the cost of the car... yea, that's why she likes cheap beater cars. But I think life's too short to be worrying about every little door ding and scratch. Back in my early 20s when I was driving the LP560, I was babying the car all the time and worrying about where I park it. Five years later, I'm parking the LP700 at Walmart, Disney World, and Universal Studios without a care in the world. Sure, people sit on my car and leave scratches with their pants buttons/belt or they write their names on the dirt on my car with their dirty fingers. But I don't think they'll be doing that with the Tesla.

I'm paying for her insurance, so that's for me to worry about (everything's going under my name, because I'm already past my gift tax exemption).

Hmm this could be bad news. It sounds like HQ coming up with a story to communicate the reason for further delays down to customers via our delivery specialists (which is a good thing, since communication has been almost nil so far, but a bad things for those of us being put on hold). If deliveries were imminent, why would they have this "big conference call" instead of just starting to release P85Ds to service centers?
  • Dec 9, 2014
    flyboyzz1
    Exactly what I was thinking.
  • Dec 9, 2014
    CHGolferJim
Maybe they have realized this would be a good technique for timely and accurate delivery of a message they want delivered uniformly and nationally, and the P85D rollout is a good time to start. Especially in the context of this delay and share price meltdown. Hopefully, this plus the tidbit that a "surprise" is coming means something positive will come out. Adding the freebie of a heated steering wheel is a good move for those affected.
  • Dec 9, 2014
    AllenWong
You get used it to fairly quickly. So don't worry. The true caveat is that you'll start finding other cars to be slow and end up stepping on the gas really hard for the acceleration that isn't there in other cars.

The car also doesn't go from stand still to super fast on its own. Just lightly tap on the gas pedal and slowly build up speed. As you start getting used to the acceleration, you'll see that entering highways via the ramp becomes easier, switching lanes becomes easier, and running over your neighbor's annoying cat that keeps pooping on your porch becomes easier (bonus points for being a quiet car).

You are my nominee for 'son of the year' award! You put my brother and I to shame. We talked about going 'halvies' on a model3 for our father. I am not going to let him read your post:biggrin:.

As to the power in the car being too much for your mom.....Maybe you can add your voice to the thought of a grasshopper mode (also called valet by some) that could limit the acceleration or top speed.

Hopefully your mother is like my 81 year old mother in law. I gave her my old manual transmission Audi A6. Before I gave it to her, my mechanic asked me "Does she know it's a manual?"

  • Dec 9, 2014
    AllenWong
 I'll put a brick under the gas pedal so that she can't step on it too hard. I actually bought the P85D because I thought that it'd have a better range than a single motor (that's that Elon said and that's what it said in the tech specs when I ordered, but now I see that it's actually less  - I have to admit that I felt a bit bait/switched), because the estimated delivery said "December" when I ordered while others said Late December and beyond (and it still says that on the order page, even though it's actually late December and beyond - I felt a bit bait/switched on this, too) and because it has auto-pilot (something my mom would appreciate, but it seems like there's no autopilot software out yet - felt baited/switched again).

Please do report back on all new features!

For some P85Ds that have started production on 11/21, that's true. For others, like mine - which entered production on 11/25 - it's only been a day in quality checks.
Of course, we don't really know how long "true" production (body-in-white, paint, initial assembly, final assembly etc.) takes versus the inspection phases since My Tesla shows "in production" for all the aforementioned stages.
Which is why I've been inquiring with my DS and the delivery center at Fremont (or inside delivery team at HQ) what exact stage of production my P85D is in.

I just talked to my DS. The conference call happens region-by-region, and happens every Tuesday. Each region has its own time for the call. Ours here in MN is at 4:00pm. My DS is not expecting any revelations since most updates come via email. Still saying that there is nothing major going on, just that the EOL inspections are running behind. I am sure they are finding and fixing bugs (my words, not his). We have a TON of PDs coming here!

The sudden intermediate burst of cars entering production (Dec 5th) has dropped to a trickle again. I think they are still making adjustments to the line to correct for issues they are seeing during inspections. Once they have the line debugged, I am hoping the pace will pick up substantially.
  • Dec 9, 2014
    SteveG3
I'm not sure about the trickle brit... maybe things are a bit better. it's 11:30 AM in California now, and glancing at the P85D spreadsheet I saw 8 cars reported as entering into production on the 5th, and 3 cars so far today. Small samples, and I wouldn't think all the 12/9s would be on the spreadsheet at this point.

thx. And per prior discussions, I assume they are building non-D cars as needed to keep the production line running at full speed.

    Just got this:

    December 10th, 2014

    Dear Matthew,

Thank you for your order of a P85D. I trust you will be delighted with the car!

Unfortunately, we experienced some delays in the production of the first P85D. I apologize for any inconvenience we are causing. We have now resolved the final concern, which was the airbag deployment for the upgraded seat design. We always want to err on the side of caution. We are building and shipping P85D cars now. Your delivery specialist will contact you shortly to finalize the delivery date.

Many thanks for your support and your patience!

There has been a lot of speculation on why P85Ds are delayed already, but one thing came to my mind I still want to share. Selling a car with hardware for autopilot which will only be enabled in the future via software update would cause me (in place of Tesla) a headache: Delivering a quite safety-critical system which has not been tested as a whole in the particular car. So just speculation on my side - after thinking about this again they might be implementing the software into an official release now and applying it to the cars before delivery, so they can test them. Surprise!

It would be in line with another rumor going around the forums that additional autopilot (ACC in particular) features would be activated mid-month. But my bet is the initial P85D's will just come with the current 6.0 software.

Technically speaking, this autopilot system isn't new. It's been used in many other cars for several years now. More info here:

Screw the airbags - most of us won't use them anyway! :)

I am certain it boils down to:
    1) their email server dropping some emails (I have had some messages clearly lost)
    2) spam filters (check your spam folder)
    3) a mail delivery system that takes time to run through a few thousand addresses (wait until tomorrow)

in any event, it doesn't matter. You got the message here.

    This is great news!

They must have sent the email to all customers who ordered, since I got it even though my car is not in production yet.
However, I hope that from now on the majority of vehicles produced will be P85Ds to make up for the slow-down.

I would venture that proper side airbag deployment was hindered either by the enlarged headrests or because the rear seats seemed to have been slightly moved forward (You can see it when you toggle between old and next generation seats on the order page). It's interesting though that they only detected it after the first cars were build.

Kudos to Tesla though for communicating and hopefully the promise will hold that our delivery specialists will contact us shortly to finalize the delivery dates!

Very possible, yes - although I rode in a P85D engineering vehicle in Palo Alto that had front next-gen seats but "old" rear seats.

I'm heading to Corte Madera in about an hour to test drive the P85D they got, although I was warned it also does not have next-gen seats either. Will keep everyone posted.

I just got the email but nothing changed on mine, still production completed and nothing from my DS yet.

Notice he said final issue. I am vindicated. There was a long punch list of things.

Sounds like it's the rear airbags that had the issue, based on all the cars with next-gen front and old rears.

I got the email also, and FWIW, my P85 also started production yesterday too.

I was very pleased to receive the email. It must have been my tweet to Elon.

Kidding aside , I'd like to think that your email to Jerome did have an impact. So thanks for that. Hope you make it!

I think this makes sense. The front airbags tend to shove you back into the seat, a motion where I doubt the plusher side-bolstering would make much difference in terms of forces on the body. The rear airbags tend to shove you sideways across the seat, where hanging up on the new bolstering would make a difference to forces.

No email here/Chicago. I ordered my P85D on 10/10 and has been listed as "In Production" since 12/1. VIN 63496

You could consider authorising someone you trust accept delivery for you; would allow you to claim the tax credit for 2014.

Make sure you have opted into emails. I for whatever reason was taking off mailing list. Worth emailing ownership just to check. Good luck.

Oops! Obviously I meant to quote the theory that the airbag issue explains why some demo cars have the new front seats but old-style rear seats.

For those looking for the email, search for an email from Jerome Guillen.

I LOVE that the log jam seems to be cleared. It does make me wonder, though, why ther is no mention of the "Elon was unhappy about some finishing details on the P85D" story we latched on to so tightly earlier. All of a sudden it's "airbag problem - ok I'm good with that". Just sayin'

No email for me, still in production and nothing from my DS. I checked and I have email updates selected but I reselected it as it occurs to me that I never get any emails about my car. I'm going to call my DS when I get a chance.

I had the same problem. Called and emailed ownership, and they had the right address. Then one day the emails started flowing properly. It was odd.

I've been production complete since 11/26.

Didn't get Jerome's email, but looking through my archives the only emails I've received from Tesla have been Service surveys and the "Document has been posted to your MyTesla" messages. I pinged my DS. I'm looking forward to getting an ETA for delivery!

In fairness, this was at best a rumor. This was never officially given as a reason, except perhaps by some DS (who many of us believe to just make up information, unfortunately).

It does seem, funny that with all the different responses we heard: from some DSs who claimed there was no delay, to the Elon fit and finish, EPA stickers, extra QA inspection time, etc. the actual reason was the only one we didn't get. I also can't see why it would have been bad to tell us this up front.

To keep future email from a particular sender from ending up in your promotions folder, right click on the email in your promotions folder, select "Move to tab -> Primary," and in the yellow box that comes up at the top of the screen asking to do the same for future message select "Yes."

Yep, tried it. Even have a rule @teslamotors.com. I'm going to try clearing it out and trying again. The email came from [emailprotected].

Yeah, I haven't figured out the whole Promotions nonsense in Gmail either. I have an @teslamotors.com label that works with my filter, but they always seem to skip the main inbox regardless. So, I have my filter forward @teslamotors.com stuff to my SMS email address also so I get a notification.

My DS (and the email) said that he is going to be calling all his PD folks to give them an update on delivery tomorrow. Given the number of folks he has to call, it could take a while

OK, if the problem(s) have been solved we should see joyous messages of production starts and completions. All I see in the spreadsheet is two starts today.
    Could it be that:
    1. The spreadsheet is a small sample of P85D orders
    2. Members are not updating
    3. or ????
  • Dec 9, 2014
    AllenWong
Three starts today if you include my recent add. That looks to be on par with the past few days. I'm guessing that members aren't updating that quickly. For example, I see several people who have similar VIN numbers as me with the same estimated delivery date and the same state as me (Florida). Theirs probably started today as well but they didn't update it.
