Is the Estimated delivery showing up on the Dashboard on teslamotors.com or are you getting it some other way?

The web portal shows for me:

    Estimated Delivery

We will contact you to schedule your exact delivery date and time.

Edit: The order was originally set up as a Home Delivery -- I changed it to 'Pick Up', and now it shows "Late December" as a date.

On the Dashboard, it says December for me. I got the December 10-24 estimation in an email from my DS.

Delete what? It's still there. Interesting to see who received their VINs first. Two Canada cars, and one CA. Different external and internal colors. Not the earliest order or confirmed dates, with estimates of late December. Weird.

FYI, my original estimate at time of confirmation was Late December but it moved to December a day later. I kept Late December in the spreadsheet because it does mention "at time of confirmation".

    - - - Updated - - -

Same here, no email - just on the Dashboard (which I've been checking obsessively at least once a day since confirming my order )

    - - - Updated - - -

Looks like you're now entered twice. Look at the top of the spreadsheet. It was sorted by order date, and yours was way early. Did you order a non-D then changed it to the P85D?
  • Nov 1, 2014
    randompersonx
The website does not show a VIN for me (I assume it should appear somewhere on the My Tesla Dashboard).
So it seems based on the 3 VIN's posted today, two in Toronto, and one in California. All three had late ordering times.

So the obvious conclusion with the Canadians as they are probably the longest shipping time within north america, so they are being processed first -- suggesting that they will likely be working their way down the east coast, and then back to the west coast as time progresses -- which should allow for production to be phased through November and have a lot of deliveries happen in December. It also looks like if you ordered on 10/9 or today, seems to make no difference whatsoever, but where you are geographically seems to make a big difference.

With the Northern California / Fremont deliveries, it will be interesting to see if those all cleared as well, or if they will be phased throughout the build cycle, but MarcG looks to have just gotten very lucky being one of the first VIN's assigned, and being so close -- I suspect he will get his car in November, and be making everyone else in this thread jealous.

    VIN's So far have:

Exterior colors: 2 Red, 1 Brown
Interior Colors: 2 Tan, 1 Black

    All with Next Gen seats.

This suggests that as someone speculated before about Tan/Gray seats causing a delay ... probably this will not be an issue (At least with the Tan seats).
  • Nov 1, 2014
    jtwxlii
Yes, I upgraded to the D then upgraded to the next gen grey seats. The delivery estimate has never changed, however, from "December."
  • Nov 1, 2014
    LetsGoFast
I just got my VIN last night too! Grey exterior. The seat color is a bit unclear. I originally ordered in grey and called and told them to switch it to black. The PDF still shows grey. I'll be thrilled either way. My delivery location is Raleigh, NC
  • Nov 1, 2014
    MarcG
I would be surprised if I'm the only NorCal person who's getting a VIN now, as I mentioned earlier some people over at teslamotors.com got theirs too. And why do you say November? Isn't delivery typically 4-6 weeks after VIN assignment?
  • Nov 1, 2014
    gpetti
First morning I didn't check first thing. Saw all these responses so checked mine. I have 63011 so apparently one of the earlier ones.
Amazing that since my last cars VIN was assigned less than a year ago Tesla has produced more cars than they produced in 2 years preceding. My current VIN is only 30287..
  • Nov 1, 2014

Sorry to hear Andrew, sounds like it's time to call your DS. By the way, what does your Dashboard status say under "Order confirmed" (left of the VIEW DESIGN button)?
  • Nov 1, 2014
    randompersonx
I'm sure his will be one of the next batch, Rockville, MD seems to be a really popular location on this list, suggesting many orders there (efficient for shipping), and Maryland is in the northeast, (long shipping time).

Hello, I am fairly new to this forum and this is my first Tesla order. I have been reading along and am very excited!

You and Andrew are confusing me. I didn't realize until now that you both have license plates saying "GetAmped" (Andrew's without the second E). I was originally surprised to see that he got a VIN number after all.
  • Nov 1, 2014
    MarcG
For those of you who don't have a VIN assigned yet but have already confirmed your order, what does the Dashboard status say?
  • Nov 1, 2014
    gpetti
It's surprising that there are 22 VINs between your two orders. If you ordered them one after the other that suggests a fairly high volume of orders on the 10th. Somewhere in between you pressing the button to order your first car and pressing the button to order the second car, mine snuck in . Presumably they will arrive at the same time?
  • Nov 1, 2014

  • Nov 1, 2014
    MarcG
Ok same here. No big change then getting the VIN, I'm sure yours will get assigned soon!
  • Nov 1, 2014
    randompersonx
    Did it change for you?

    Mine still says:
Order Confirmed: Your Model S has entered the production queue at our Factory in Fremont, California.
  • Nov 1, 2014
    MarcG
Well that's what mine says now even though I got a VIN.
The sad thing is that I can't remember what it said before my VIN assignment (hope it's not Alzheimer's :crying:) which is why I've been asking what it says for those of you who didn't get a VIN yet.

Anyway, it looks like the status message doesn't change after a VIN gets assigned (unless it actually enters production).

Does anyone know what all the possible status messages are? I tried a search but didn't see any lists.
  • Nov 1, 2014
    AMN
Same here. No VIN yet even though we had ordered ours before they started giving people rides at the reveal gig.
It looks like the VIN assignment algorithm favors Canadian cars. It makes sense that they are pushing them out first - Tesla wants to deliver as many P85Ds as possible in this calendar year.
  • Nov 1, 2014
    GetAmped
Before the VIN is assigned, it has RNxxxxx which is the Reservation Number.
  • Nov 1, 2014
    andrewket
Building Canada cars first makes sense for Q4 revenue. What I'm confused by is that there does not appear to be a delay for Tan or Grey seats as previously communicated. Of course it's possible the tan and grey cars won't enter production at the same time. Shrug.. Probably not worth over thinking it :)

I've asked the design team for feedback on damper valving for the air and coil options. They confirmed that the air springs have not changed in rate since the P+. I moved my P+ to coils and have been very happy. My desire is to configure the PD with coils provided I am not giving up damper valving.

Is there any chance of adding suspension choice to the spread sheet (provided others are interested in this as well)?
  • Nov 2, 2014
    andrewket
Can you order the P85D with coils today? Or are you trying to obtain data on interest in order to convince Tesla to offer it? If the former, I'll happily add it to the spreadsheet. If the latter, that's probably best done with a new thread, I think?
  • Nov 2, 2014
    lolachampcar
They opened up my configuration options to include delete air about 2/3rds of the way through my confirmation period. I believe this, along with a lot of other possible options, was done for everyone yet to confirm. They allowed 19s (which I took as there are some fantastic rim/tire options out there for $4500), different headliners, seats and the like.

I had already asked about PD air spring rate and damping before they opened up additional options. I was told the air spring rate was the same as the P+ but that "I would not be disappointed" with the re-valving of the dampers. The engineering team is wicked smart and I trust their judgement. I circled around again to ask about the coil v. air damping and am currently awaiting feedback.
  • Nov 2, 2014
    andrewket
I didn't realize when they opened up the options that they also allowed a P85D without the air suspension. I've added it to spreadsheet.

    ** EVERYONE **

Please go back to your spreadsheet entry and update it to reflect Air or Coil suspension. Also if you've received a VIN please add it as well. Thanks.
  • Nov 2, 2014
    andrewket
Just curious why you delayed your order to August?
  • Nov 2, 2014

There you go! See, you weren't far behind at all :)

    - - - Updated - - -

Done. Could you please lock column A so it makes it easier to see what row we're on as we scroll right? Thanks!

    - - - Updated - - -

BTW Smart Air Suspension is just another option just like Tech Package, Premium Sound, etc. so if people entered All options in your spreadsheet I would assume it's included. Anyway happy to call it out separately if needed.
  • Nov 2, 2014
    andrewket
True. I thought about defaulting to air as well. Shrug. I've locked column A.
  • Nov 2, 2014

I wonder if Canadian orders got prioritized not because of shipping timing with the end of the fiscal quarter, but instead because of weather. Who better to get AWD to ASAP during winter than our neighbors to the north.

I say that because we're seeing a few early December delivery date estimates for Canadian orders. If it was due to timing, I'd expect those to all be mid/late December.
  • Nov 2, 2014
    randompersonx
Could be true. If so, that doesn't speak well for my Miami delivery.
  • Nov 2, 2014
    gpetti
I wondered about that too but I'm not sure if the fact that our need may be greater would be enough to re-prioritize Tesla's deliveries. I guess if they are seeing an upsurge in Canadian orders there might be some benefit in showing Canadian orders being up? I suppose too, that the more of us have AWD and can rave about it, the more people might start buying Teslas. When I talk to people about my car, one of the first questions I get usually are about the drive type and then when I say RWD, they ask me about winter driving. I always point out (as many people on here did to me) that RWD seems to work well given proper snow tires but I suspect many people have come to enjoy the confidence that AWD brings them. I predict that sales in my neck of the woods will increase now.
  • Nov 2, 2014
    jtwxlii
Wow, still no VIN for me...I feel like I've been confirmed for months. Tesla support (not my own dealer or DS ) has said they were quite sure of a December delivery. Time is running out :(
  • Nov 2, 2014
    andrewket
OConnorStP - you have two cars listed, 63299 in Chicago and 63530 in Minneapolis. Is this an error?
  • Nov 2, 2014
    lolachampcar
    andrew,
When the misunderstanding occurred, I decided to simply wait to the two years of ownership mark to allow the depreciation to occur over a longer period of time and number of miles. I pushed the build out to Aug. When the misunderstanding was corrected, I revisited my configuration and noticed the coil/air option. Once I have that determined, I'll lock my configuration and ask them to build the car at their earliest convenience (as I will be MS less and jonesing for a fix).
  • Nov 2, 2014
    Jgdixon
It would be nice to think we are getting some priority. Might make up for us having to wait so long for the first Sig deliveries.
  • Nov 2, 2014
    crazybrit
I just ordered, and confirmed mine. Added to the spreadsheet. For delivery, all I am seeing is "requested delivery." It says December. Will I get a new delivery date once it goes through the system? I am guessing that since I did it late on a Saturday I won't get anything definitive until Monday. Is that true?
  • Nov 2, 2014
    Cottonwood
There does seem to be a strong correlation between VIN assignment and locations in Canada and U.S. locations distant from California. There is only one California delivery location on the spreadsheet with a VIN assigned. Tesla may be planning to maximize the total sales volume on deliveries before the end of the fourth quarter; start the closer deliveries later because they have less shipping time.
  • Nov 2, 2014
    mrElbe
Or we Canadians have been selected to be the Beta testers.
  • Nov 2, 2014
    gpetti
    Not to mention the superchargers

    - - - Updated - - -

I think this makes sense and is the most likely reason for the VIN assignment order. Build all the ones that need more shipping time and then you make sure to get as many new orders fulfilled before end of December as possible.
  • Nov 2, 2014

Is it possible that the dashboard is manually updated by the DS and the grouping of vehicles by delivery location is just a side effect of this manual update since they're doing their vehicles all at once?

I don't think so. The updates seem to occur overnight.

Also of note, motortrend's hands-on review of the P85D called it a 2015. I double checked my VIN and it is decoding as a 2014 model. Historically Tesla changes the model year on January 1st. If VINs are assigned about 30 days out, I would expect VIN's issued at the beginning of December will decode to 2015. Motortrend probably assumed their test car was a 2015.

Lastly, thanks to whomever added the charts! Nice addition.

Got my VIN! 63754. This is a Pearl White with San Diego delivery in December. Still figuring out how to create a signature on here with my order details. Will update the spreadsheet.

If you haven't already, check out the Motor Trend review of the P85D. They get 3.1 seconds 0-60 and have this amazing quote:

I think you need at least 10 posts for the signature. If I remember correctly.

Anyone have a guess on the distribution of the VIN's?

Based on 3 digit prefix of last 6 digits...
    628 1
    630 13
    631 2
    632 1
    633 0
    634 1
    635 3
    637 1

A bunch of 63000-63100, and absolutely none in the 63300-63400 and very few in all the other ranges?

This is starting to bum me out. Several other Minneapolis deliveries with VIN's for P85D for a few days now, who ordered on the same date as me or after....grrrr :)
C'mon tesla I gave up my P85 already, I'm in withdrawal having to drive an ICE car!!

Oops. I also linked to the article because I missed your post when the pages changed.

I added the charts and was thinking of going back and changing the colors to match the data and saw that you already did it. Nice to see someone who is as anal as I am about that sort of thing.

I concussed my head a few weeks ago and am still recovering from it. One of the tests that I take to measure my improvement uses spelled out names of colors, some of which match the color stated, and others that don't. When I first started taking the test, seeing BLUE and RED caused my brain to implode. So I had to change it :)

Quick update on my end, given that I'm the first non-Canadian VIN and live very close to the factory.

I just spoke to an inside delivery member and his information currently shows that production will start in late-November/early-December, with about 10 days to completion per P85D.
So the earliest any P85D will be leaving the factory is the first or second week of December.

So far, the earliest delivery date anyone on this thread has received is December 11th for "gpetti" who lives in Calgary, Canada.
If they produce about 100 VINs in the same week, I hope to get mine delivered around that time as well.

Will keep you posted as soon as I get a better delivery estimate than "December", but this specialist I spoke to at Tesla HQ said "most likely by mid-December".
BTW I still don't have a DS assigned to me, but that's probably expected since I just ordered a week ago.

To add a little more information to what MarcG said, my DS was assigned to me about 2 weeks ago. Having said that, I still don't have a VIN assigned (ordered and confirmed on 10/10).

My DS indicated that I can expect delivery in Houston the week of Dec. 22nd (along with all the caveats that that date is subject to change).

I spoke to my DS today. He stated that my car would go into production the last week of November, and that I'd take delivery sometime in the first 2 weeks of December.

Congrats, that's great news! Given that your VIN is in the 63400's, this bodes well for the 630XX also starting production late-Nov.

The next question being: does Tesla actually manufacture the Model S in order following VINs?

Early Vins seem to be Canada bound. They should be making them almost in Vin # order and perhaps well above the note you said about 100/wk. I suspect they will make 600/wk because they are much higher Gross Margin cars and necessary for some year end financials.

I have actually spent quite a lot of time collecting data from the massive VIN update thread stickied at the top of the forum and I'm going say that the answer is No. If you collect a lot of data, it is quite clear that there is a pretty strong correlation between VIN and the day that a particular vehicle goes into production, but I have found quite a number of instances where a car with a lower VIN went into production several days later, including at least two cases where the person with the lower VIN was bemoaning the fact that his car was still not showing "In Production." The consensus view appears to be that the message indicating that production has begun is automated, so I think there is pretty definitive evidence that not all cars are built in VIN order. I know from information I was told on a tour of the Ford Rouge factory that it is important to stagger different interior and performance options to avoid bottlenecks at certain stations of the production process and that they might want to group cars together to efficiently tie into supplies that they have on hand (particular leather seats, for instance) or even to make the staging of their shipping process more efficient. I don't know that they do this for those reasons, but I know for sure that they don't always follow VIN order on a 1, 2, 3, 4 basis.

However, if you did a correlation coefficient, you would find that VIN number is very strongly associated with production and if you forced me to make a bet on any two cars, I'd be happy to bet on the lower VIN and I'm pretty sure I'd win more than I'd lose. Delivery time is extremely variable and people located far away from the factory obviously have a much longer delay between build and delivery than people who can pick it up in Freemont.

In this thread you can see tons of examples of "out of order" production.

Thanks for the detailed info LetsGoFast. Totally understand the need to stagger production based on component availability, plus Tesla's region-based and model-based production directives.

I guess I should then rephrase my question to: will Tesla manufacture the P85D specifically in VIN order? I guess only time will tell.

Andrew, would it be possible to add a column next to VIN labeled "Entered production date"? Thanks.

To the point we were just discussing, I just got off the phone with my DS and he said that he thought my car would go into production "around" Dec 1 and arrive two weeks later. My personal wish list is that it shows up in time for a 12/13 pickup, because that next week is going to be very difficult timing if I have to get it then. My VIN is 63142. He did confirm that my request to switch from the grey leather to the black was accepted by the factory and that it would absolutely arrive that way when I got it. I'm almost entirely obsessed with Teslas right now.

My current thought is to replace "re-confirmed date" with "entered production date". Based on the data we have, it does not appear as if the re-confirmed date had any bearing on build order, and therefore is useless to track. Anyone else have an opinion on this change?

Is there any upside / downside to having a 2014 vs. a 2015? My gut would tell me that for resale purposes, etc., it would sound better to be able to call my car a 2015, but perhaps I am mistaken. I still don't have a VIN, so now I'm wondering if I should be hoping that my car winds up officially being a 2015 instead of a 2014. Is this just me trying to make lemonade from lemons?

Also when you say Tesla changes the model year on January 1st, what exactly does that mean? Cars that begin production after that date are 2015s or cars that end production after that date are 2015s or cars that are delivered after that date are 2015s? You mention something about VINs assigned at the beginning of December may be decoding to 2015s, but I'm not sure what your thoughts are with respect to when those cars would be produced / delivered.

    Thanks!

    andrewket
There may be some small value from a resale perspective to have a 2015 over a 2014, not because of Tesla, but because other manufacturer's generally make changes between model years. The common accepted idea is that a later model year is "better" than an earlier year. This isn't true for Tesla; as recently stated by Elon Tesla makes changes every week. A December 2014 P85D build will be mostly the same as a January 2015 build, which Tesla will call a 2015 Model S. Any changes are likely to be not obvious. A February 2015 build may have minor differences compared to a January 2015 build, etc.

To your second question, if Tesla does the same thing as they did last year, a car that begins assembly after January 1st will be a 2015. Since VINs are assigned approximately 30 days before assembly begins, I expect we'll start to see 2015 VINs issued the first week of December.

I would not delete any data. It may be useful later. Just add another column for the additional data.

I got an e-mail from Fremont stating that my P85D should be ready for delivery in the "first half of December" in Colorado, but I still do not have a VIN.

I don't have a VIN yet either. But I am paying Tesla back for not yet issuing me a VIN by checking the website every minute or so for going on 2 days now...
