I think the Model S is better off stock than modded. It looks great when stock.
I especially don't like when people black out all of the chrome.

chrome is for old people  Does not look good on modern cars, but everyone have their own taste ;)
  • Jan 29, 2015

I'm of the opinion chrome looks good when it's against a contrasting color, like black. For red, however, I feel it clashes.

To each their own. Individual tastes are individual!

i think its the quality of the chrome that make the diff, in this case, there is room for improvement !

While at the Quaker Steak car show last night, Btrflyl8te told me an older gentleman said he loved her chrome and didn't like my blacked out trim (we were parked next to each other). I forgot just how old she said he was though.

The whole black vs. chrome thing is generational because of different attitudes. Black is the color that shows attitude. Black is "bad." Chrome shines, which connotes beauty and status. Picture cowboys wearing black hats and cowboys wearing white hats, it's a similar deal. I bet music choices vary between the black trim and chrome trim types!

Thanks to frankness and EarlyAdopter I have now changed my P85D order from Pearl White to MC Red. I was planning to replace my pearl white P85 with a pearl white P85D but after seeing how great the red looks with blacked out chrome made it an easy decision to switch.

I think blacked out chrome on this car looks so out of place for a futuristic, chrome electric powered beauty.
Black chrome makes it look so monotone.
  • Feb 3, 2015
    skilly
Both of these perspectives seek to understand. Personal taste is just that - personal. They have had all black cars forever...the original cars only came in black, then in the 50s it was a single stage paint for your hot rod, revived today and actually called "hot rod black". I personally look at the chrome and think 'bling bling'...BMW charges for taking chrome away and call it "the sport package". In fact, most car companies making a statement about their car releases usually offer an all black edition for a premium price. My point (aside from saying I clearly like the black look) is there is something for everyone out there....I dont ever look at it as "black vs. chrome" - just personalization.

thanks!! none whatsoever. And the ride is largely unaffected - feels a tad more 'sporty'.

It looks like youre local...I had it done in Pleasanton at a great shop called Kartunz...its something that can be done while you wait (maybe 90 min tops)

In case you haven't seen the old classic Chevy & Ford which I love, I don't think chrome has any thing to do with futuristic. That said, I don't think you can go wrong with a Model S Tesla either stock or chrome delete ... all about personal taste. Would love to see your Model S, please post pic of your stock Tesla.

A Model S P85 I spotted in Istanbul / Turkey. It is crazy to think these people import these vehicles without Tesla being officially present with their own means. I wish I was one of those people (i.e. I wish I had that much money)

This isn't the only one either, I spotted one in the city a couple of months ago too but couldn't snap a photo. There also was a black one on sale on the internet. There are close to 10, maybe more Model S' in Istanbul. I envy, soon much.

Just dropped my black S85 off at Northwest Auto Salon. I dropped by on Friday to do a walk around of the car with the guys and settle on some things. The owner Blake is very cool, took a lot of time to talk about tint options, different materials to use for the chrome delete, different options on how to handle the nose cose and we even brought up your car and the cut-out he did for the Tesla name on the back and how he could do some interesting things with that. Plus, Clint Dempsey's F150 was in there getting a stealth panel replaced (someone door'd it bad, paint was saved though thanks to XPEL) which, as a Sounders fan, was just an added geekout bonus for me

I settled on doing an XPEL Stealth wrap & chrome delete (plus tint with Photosync 45). Stealth wrap should give the car the satin/matte finish, and the chrome will be done out in a color called "Black Pearl". Some additional accents done in a flat matte paint, for example on the 'TESLA' wording on the back he's going to paint matte black then overlay the black pearl with the lettering cut out, should look cool.

Can't wait to get it back, should be done by Friday if they can get the black pearl in on time.

XPEL Stealth in progress, I like this shot because you can compare the panels not finished against the area's were it is applied. Chrome delete hasn't started yet. I'm very excited to see the final version!

    sickfox
that's a pretty sweet shot! are you going to wrap the chrome section next to the fog lights and the nose cone?
  • Feb 12, 2015
    morbot
Yeah the chrome delete will wrap all the chrome in a material called "black pearl", including the small chrome accents and the T badges.

I've been talking with the shop owner about what to do with the nose cone. At one point we were considering putting the "black pearl" over the whole nose cone, but I think we're leaning towards putting clear XPEL Ultimate over it and leaving it glossy black. I don't want to go for a complete monotone look, I want some variance/depth with colors that play well together. Between the tinted windows, B-columns, and pano roof, etc, there will be some glossy elements on the car so the nose cone may play well into it.

I'm letting the shop owner make the artistic decisions regarding the nose cone, but I told him I don't want the nose cone to be the same at the main body (Stealth) which I think would create a monotone look. I think he's leaning towards putting black pearl on the chrome, and clear on the existing glossy, which I think will really pop.

On February 14th every year barbershop quartets all over the country fan out to deliver Singing Valentines. This is my quartet, The Northsiders, standing in front of my Valentine Red P85D delivery van. We spread a little joy to fourteen lucky recipients around the Denver north metro, though one college co-ed is probably in trouble with Mom, who arranged to have us surprise her daughter in her math lecture on the campus of CU Boulder. Trouble is, the daughter skipped class...

Just got the car back from Northwest Auto Salon. Only pic I have from now is from my phone, so pardon the image quality, will post some better ones when they update their blog with the photos they took and I'll try to get some outdoor shots with a nice camera on the next sunny day we get.

XPEL Ultimate Stealth with black pearl chrome delete. 45 Prestige Photosync tint (35 when UV activated). The black pearl looks close to the stealth in this, but its very dynamic in lighting conditions and gets some interesting range which hopefully we captured in some of the other pictures.

Given the name of the material, I may just have to formally name my car: The Black Pearl

    Hello

This is my MC red P85, only thing remaining is to black powder coat my rims.

XPel ultimate stealth matte wrap, chrome delete, and rear and fog light tints all from http://www.protexvancouver.ca (Protex). Also got the windows tinted. Got these done a few months back but finally got a chance to take some pictures. Sorry I took some artistic liberty to spruce up the backgrounds :)

Nice pic! I'm more interested, however, in how you got fog lights and DRLs on together, with no headlights. Was this 'shopped? or are those the turning lamps, and you had the car in reverse?
  • Feb 26, 2015
    dlwi291
    No, it's not shopped.

The trick is, put the gear on N then manually press e-brake.
You can then just turn on the low beam with DRL on and fog light on.

Here's some love for the chrome crowd, I even went with the mirror-cut face wheels to bring more bling to the equation :D
Oh, and by the way, I am fairly young... that said, I love the chrome-less look as well and may go that route if I ever get tired of my current set up.

Inspired by EarlyAdopter and frankness. I mixed in a little carbon fiber at the suggestion of my installer. Work done at Speed Shield in Addison, Tx.

+ Photosync tint and quartz pro coating (In progress)

Thanks for the feedback. When the mirrors were red they stood out like a sore thumb. The carbon fiber mirrors certainly won't be for everyone but I think it's a nice contrast from the glossy black arms holding the mirrors.

So apparently I was inspired by Sigma4Life, EarlyAdopter and frankness. But then I added/changed things up a bit. I don't have a fully clean car just yet, but hopefully will sometime this weekend at the Tesla Road Trip (Reach the Beach) event. For now just this one photo:

    Screen Shot 2015-04-15 at 10.49.00 AM.png

My setup was mostly flat black, except that the rear lower diffuser, door handles, side markers, and front emblem are in carbon fiber. Some of these items were courtesy of RPM Tesla with their pre-cuts. And the rest was done by my local vinyl shop. IT came out great... there are a few spots he could have tucked a bit better, but overall I'm happy with the work.

Today was pretty fun and took a bit of an ironic picture. Got a gift to drive a NASCAR here at the Chicago Speedway, was pretty awesome experience. Thought I'd take a photo of the MS in the parking lot with the gas guzzling raceway in the background ;-)

I really like the solid white! It's so bright and sticks out against all the other softer/less sporty whites out there. If considering it - go with it! (although, we tend to call it "supremacy white" as a joke since it is soooo white)

    Thanks

I only did the coppertop because the car was already copper. I don't know even know what a Panasonic battery looks like without googling it because we always used duracell and energizer growing up.

NOT ONE person that has seen my car has put it together that it resembles a duracell battery. NOT ONE! Even with a few clues no one gets it. Then when I tell them it hits them. Then they say I can't believe I didn't get that. Hiding in plain sight I guess.

Why 'temporary'? I think it looks really good like this! (although I could probably do without the 'Tesla' down the sides - reminds me of some Ford Mustangs.... LOL)

What do they say after you tell them? "That's a big A$$ moving battery!" hahahaha

I'll be buying some custom vinyl stickers to go on the side. Something subtle but also something that gets the point across.
