I was told by my DS that the webpage will not be updated until the car is delivered, at when them it will be changed to say "in your garage". When it shows up in the app, it means the car is in production.

My car (VIN 6087) was completed today and is currently in quality control testing (it stays there for 2-3 days), expected to be shipped out later this week. This is what the DS told me today.

Called Tesla today and got my VIN (6211). My delivery window is Feb 28th thru March 14th. The person who I spoke with said my car's status is "before assembly line" which he said means they have all the parts, just have not assembled them yet. He guesstimated that I would get the car at the end of my delivery window with a chance I get it the following week (around March 21st).

Was told it takes a week to get from CA to the Rockville Service Center. The Rockville Service Center preps the cars and then they go to their final destination. This is for DC area deliveries.

You're getting close - give it 10 days to 2 weeks. I got a window of Mar 6 - 20 on February 10, last Thursday (21st) received my VIN, and got into the app a day or two later. Of course, you can't do anything in the app anyway, because you need to activate Remote Access in the car.

Well if it heads east tomorrow and gets to Rockville on March 6th, then I should get it before my window closes (March 14th) even though I'm about 2 hours south of DC, they are telling me they will be flatbedding it to me. Hard to believe the end (beginning) is near.

On top of that, I have a factory tour scheduled in early April. :)

Makes you wonder, as we're waiting eagerly, how the cars themselves feel as they're rolling down the line getting assembled...

"Finally! Any day now I'm going to get to be DRIVEN." Probably chattering with the other cars on the line in front and behind about how excited they are to meet their owners. I bet they have their own forums that they read obsessively.

    Questions:

Are you going to have it delivered to your home?
  • Feb 27, 2013

I live in Northeast Wisconsin and will be taking delivery at my home. I don't want to risk the drive with the high performance tires and any chance of snow (I want to wait until fall to get a winter rim/tire set). Plus, the range might be pushing it for my first drive. I must say, I am excited to take delivery at my house but I do feel a little obnoxious taking delivery at my house. Hopefully it happens during the day in the middle of the week so it doesn't attract attention from the neighbors. While I enjoy my Chevy Volt, I certainly miss my 06 M5 (sold) so I'm really excited to get my MS and have it fill that itch for me.

How about you, are you doing the home delivery? Also, Does anyone know if the cars drop ship right from the factory to your house or do the cars ship from the Chicago Service Center? Have any owners had good/bad experiences with the Chicago Service Center detailing their cars prior to delivery (any damage to the paint or interior)? Usually I ask dealers not to prep my cars, as I have never had a good experience (I like my new cars without swirl marks).

BTW, I did see a Tesla in Milwaukee as I was driving through yesterday. I know they are popular in California, but that was the first one I saw on the road in the midwest.
  • Feb 27, 2013
    montgom626

Go for home delivery. I assume that the MS will be driven up from Chicago (trailered) to my home. I agree you should have home delivery. To do otherwise is "crazy".

    A MS in Milwaukee???? Nice!

I have a 2012 Volt and find it to be wondwerfully done compact car.

I called Owner Experience to ask whether my HPWC would arrive before my Model S. The person I spoke to said "Well, let me take a look. It looks like your car will roll off the line right at the end of March and should be delivered two weeks later..." I was excited to get a semi-official estimate of my ship date. I ordered on 2/18. BTW, he said that I probably wouldn't have the HPWC in time.

I went out of the country for a few days and the first day gone I see my VIN appear on the app. One day later they are setting delivery date. I was going to do a factory pick up, but not a good time so changed to service center. Looks like I will get it this Sat or Sun. Delivery window was March 1 through 15? looks like they hit it for me. 85 none perf, everything else except 21 inch and child seats.

So my two most spaced data points before this change is then:
    Jan.17th 3832
    Feb. 17th 6004

2172 cars in a month, 70 per day and thus 490 per week. Nice

After using the app as data points:
    Feb.5th 4874
Feb. 21st 6004 (same as above but found in the app at this date)

71 cars per day, 494 per week.

The production rate seems very consistent and probably a lot closer to 500/week than 400/week.

Vin showed up in the app late yesterday (Wed). This either suggests a 5 day production week, <70 per day production or variability in linking app to car in production.

Hans, I'd call them. I can't see my answers online, but received an email right away when I finished the questionnaire. I also received my delivery button yesterday, with a delivery date similar to yours. Are you in New England by any chance? Wondering if we would be on the same truck.
  • Feb 28, 2013
    jkirkebo
Ok, that gives 65 per day or ~454 per week. Still closer to 500 than 400 ;)

And yes, short term data will be skewed by weekends. A 9 day period for example can contain 4 weekend days or only 2.

Feb.5th to Feb.27th contain 6 weeked days. If I remove those I get 446 per week, pretty close to the 454 previously computed.

I'm a little confused by the VIN's. I'm #6273 which I was told went into production early this week and this morning it finally showed up on both my Android and iPhone app (Yes, I'm one of those checking almost every hour). I was also told the car would finish production the end of this week with a projected pickup date of March 15ish in Seattle. However, I've seen on this forum VIN's in the 66xx range already being delivered in places like Texas. Either the VIN's don't truly represent the sequence of production on the line, or somehow the cars are staged in the production after they actually start production sequencially.

Anyone have solid info as to the stage of production for a car when it shows up on the Andriod/iPhone app? Is it at the beginning, middle or end of the run?

Probably. And this being the last day of February I have calculated the February Model S production to 1818 cars, give or take about 50. That is 454 per week or ~91 per day in a 5 day workweek.

Got a phone call from Tesla three days ago informing me that my car would be ready for pickup in Westchester, NY this Saturday. As would be expected, I'm elated! My enthusiasm is slightly tempered by what I would consider a poor job of communication by Tesla personnel. I called my Product Specialist the following day to ask if there would be any due bill items, specifically the HPWC. He couldn't tell me. Since then I've had NO communication from Tesla. There are a few things that would be helpful: exactly WHERE is Westchester County am I picking up the car?; what time should I show up?; where is the final MVPA?; and what's my VIN? So far, I don't know any of this, and I'd at least like to be able to plan my day Saturday, as someone has to drive me to pickup the car.

I'm trying hard to not be impatient about this. Perhaps it's just that I'm more excited about this car than anything else I've ever purchased.

Anyway, I will post pics when I finally take delivery.

No, it doesn't say anything like that. In the top left corner is the VIN. Then a dialogue box pops up saying "Mobile App Remote Access is OFF","Turn Remote Access ON from the vehicle's touchscreen by going to Controls>Settings>Vehicle"[Retry][Account]. The only button I can select is [account]. [retry] just brings up the same message. When I go to the account page, it shows my login email, and gives me the buttons to [cancel] or [sign-out]. The home/controls/charge/climate/location buttons at the bottom are greyed out.

IMO Tesla has been great. I don't sweat the small stuff and I've learned over time to lower my expectations. Tesla has notified me each step of the way and I've responded promptly. They called me 4 days ago and said my car was ready but I will be out of town for the next 3 weeks and they rescheduled my delivery date. It was very nice of them since it will be outside of my delivery window. Low expectations means I will never be disappointed. Or maybe because I switched to DECAF? just kidding

Have you ever ordered a car before?

    BMW or Ferrari?

The car is ready when it's ready. You order the car from BMW and 4 months later (depending on model of course) you get a call that the car is ready t the dealership.

There is no app, there is no online filling out of paperwork, there is no early VIN, there is no firm delivery window.

I am curious what ordering experience you are comparing Tesla against.
  • Feb 28, 2013
    stenkb
    Hi Kaivball,

I have ordered cars before, including my 2010 Roadster......I don't have issues with waiting for a car to be made - that is normal.

My issues are with calls not returned, emails not returned, incorrect information given out (such as not being allowed to trade in my Roadster), lack of communication, and basic pre-sale service. My car is supposed to be arriving as soon as 3 days from now but to date I have had zero Tesla initiated communication. My Roadster needs to be transported 1200km to a service center for inspection which is fine, but I find this out days before my Model S is arriving I still can't get information on when it will be picked up - dates promised have come and gone twice. I can't proceed with the Model S until my Roadster is inspected, and I am still left in the dark on everything - even after specifically asking.

Believe me I love Tesla, bought a Roadster and shares of TSLA to help support Tesla, bought a Model S to continue to do so and I LOVE the cars! But for me everything else at Tesla is lacking badly. I hope they get their **** together for future customers, because once the early adopters have their cars, the general public I fear won't deal with these problems very well.
  • Feb 28, 2013
    Kaivball
I understand your frustration. I think Tesla set a high bar of expectation (especially with home delivery) and you are right, three days out I'd probably want to have more info as well.

You would probably have less anxiety though if you knew less. I.e. no info at all until the car is ready for delivery. Meaning its built and ready to go on the truck.
No prior info on VIN, build dates, delivery windows, etc.

I do agree and am a firm believer that dates have meanings and that you shouldn't give out dates if you can't keep them.

What a day!!! I had checked with my DS earlier in the week to try and be proactive and schedule and plan for my factory pickup and financing of Vin 61xx. Based on that dialogue it seemed like it would be sometime next week. Around noon today I got an email saying that I could schedule my factory pickup for this Friday, Saturday or Sunday!!! Called B of A who were great and able to sign loan documents on-line and have funding scheduled with payment directly to Tesla for tomorrow.! Called DS and got a final MVPA paperwork, signed and returned within 30 minutes. Submited an echeck for payment of the balance due on my dashboard. DS confirmed a factory pickup time for Sunday and was able to book the first morning flight to SFO from LA for Sunday.

Thanks to this thread, I was able to determine and set my own expectation of the production status of my vehicle and be prepared with my plan once I received confirmation from Tesla. I am happy because my car is being delivered at the front end of the delivery window of 3/1-3/15. As I expected, I saved a week by picking up at the factory. I had pre-arranged the financing directly with B of A and not through Tesla. Note that the Tesla - B of A rate is higher than what I was able to get by dealing directly with B of A. This may be a credit risk pricing function which may have ended up being the same but the initially quoted rate from Tesla was higher. I had initially encountered some difficulty with my insurance provider, Met Life, as Tesla was not on their list, however, contacting an agent and having them work with the underwriter satisfactorily resolved the issue. Once again, thank you to all of those before me who posted their experiences as it helped me to be proactive. Garage is ready to go with Nema 14-50 and pre-wired for the HPWC when it arrives. Ordered the Tesla floor mats from the store and they arrived yesterday.

Now let's all hope that Tesla is successful and our leap of faith and willingness to make a potentially risky purchase decision will pay-off with a car that we love to drive, operating cost efficiency and long-term maintenance of its residual value.

I am in a little bit of shock now, as I realize, that my impulse decision in December to place a reservation has resulted in me purchasing an all electric car. I did not start out intending to purchase an electric vehicle. I wanted to purchase a high performance cost/fuel efficient vehicle that I would enjoy to drive. I believe that is a MS.

Now I will be able to spend less time reading every new post on TMC hourly and instead enjoy driving my MS. Thanks to all the poster who helped the time pass and provide me with the education to know what to expect. One of the best features was not having to deal with a car dealer and feeling like I was not getting the best price.

So we are not alone in SD. My customer service experience has been great. Once that VIN showed up, Tesla has called & e-mailed me several times. All the paper work is complete and I hope to get the check tomorrow. I ended up financing through San Diego County Credit Union. No problems at all.

    Reservation 15807.
Received VIN 6313 in iPhone app today - 2-28 (I already knew my VIN because I had called on 2-22 and received the VIN over the phone).
Delivery window is 3-1 through 3-15
Changed my pick up from Costa Mesa to factory a few days ago, which should result in earlier pick up, at least in theory. We'll see if that ends up being the case.
Still waiting for Final MVPA, which should come any day now. Need that to finish off the financing.

Just thought I would share a fun synchronicity story...

I drove a friend to his MS pickup appt today, and felt no pangs of jealousy along the way.

While he was getting the demo in his car, he asked how the iPhone app worked. He had installed it so pulled it out. I pulled out my own phone, opened the app for the 25th time...and this time, my car had appeared in it.

Oh, my phone rang during the demo. I checked the voicemail later: it was the first call from my DS, getting final information.

    I don't know if there's a lesson here. :)

Recent update on 14,480....vin 6276. Delivery window pushed back to 3/4-3/18. Also note that this order is a performance...spreadsheet shows 85.

The jury is still out on Sequence #12,524. I was told I could pickup the car tomorrow, and that has been repeated at recently as 6:42pm today. But....I still don't have the VIN. And I still don't have the final MVPA. Kinda hard to take care of business without those things!

Our Vins are 7 numbers apart. We finalized 2 days apart. Our delivery windows are exactly 2 days apart. Same truck? Perhaps. Coincidence? Perhaps.

OK, boys and girls. I received the final MVPA at 11:58 pm, almost exactly 12 hours prior to my scheduled pickup. Talk about cutting it close. So....I'm off to Westchester in a couple of hours to get my new baby!

Great work. FYI, for Res. 8061/VIN 4270 (i.e., me), battery should be 85, Air should be Yes, and Pano should be Yes. I'm not sure whether Location means "where I picked it up" (Rockville is correct; ignore the rest of the sentence) or "where I live" (I don't live in Rockville; please just use "Maryland").

I cant believe Ive had it three weeks! :-D

That's awesome. I'll be there at 2:30pm the following Sunday. I've seen one in the Del Mar area on I-15 and my buddy at work in Sorrento Valley has one. It's his fault for driving me around it in. This was just a nice-to-have until that day. It's hard to fault him though for something like this. :)

Outlet is installed in the garage (more solar panels coming soon) and Lloyds floor mats arrived. Just need the car to round it out. Please post pictures of yours on the other thread when you get it. Hope to see you around town in it.

Thanks! I think that quite a few of the "85's" should be performance. I'll try to keep this spreadsheet up to date at least twice a week since the previous person that was doing this obviously got his long-awaited Tesla and is off driving!!

Sequence # 15, 292. Delivery window is March 6 - March 20, Just got the VIN number (6303) via phone call from Tesla Natick, MA, Friday evening. VIN number hasn't appeared as yet on the phone app or Web page.

Ours will probably be on the same truck - I am VIN 6302 and picking up in Watertown - same delivery window. My VIN showed up on the app on Wednesday night. Have never heard from anyone at Tesla (Natick or CA), but I did call last week and they said to expect delivery in the 'middle of the window.' We'll see.

I'm pretty sure I saw VIN 6,790 being assembled when I took the factory tour yesterday (I was picking up VIN 5785). At one point in the tour, they showed us the part of the assembly line where the roof is attached to the rest of the frame and each frame had a very VIN-like 6,7XX four digit number hand written on it. Next in line to get the roof attached (as of about noon yesterday) had 6790 written on it.

That's neat. So 6283 ("Shane") might be finished? Maybe I should get home? Or at least check messages? I hope he's not scared, or lonely. Wondering where I am.
  • Mar 3, 2013

Our tour guide didn't let us out near the finished cars so I couldn't spot any other VIN numbers. But I bet your car was either in the final stages of assembly or being QC'ed. And I'm pretty sure "Shane" isn't lonely since he's surrounded by his brothers and sisters :)

    Tuck,

Wendy Chuah, the Natick Branch Manager, was the person who called my cell phone Friday@ 5:00pm. She asked for copies of my license and proof of auto insurance to get the paperwork started. She said the car would be here in 2 to 3 weeks (within the window). I'm having the car delivered to my home so you'll probably get yours first. Wendy's email address is: [emailprotected]

Does anyone know when you are supposed to get a delivery specialist assigned? I got my vin over the phone last week and my window is between 11th and 25th of March but I have not heard anything from Tesla and have not had any contact (other than my phone call last week) from anyone at the factory. I'm starting to get antsy since my financing already came through with Penfed.

Somehow, in my rush to get things finished, I sent the wire transfer this morning before signing the paperwork. My dad's grey/black 85kwh Model S is being picked-up at the factory this Sunday (10-Mar). He could've picked it up as early as tomorrow, but that didn't fit in his schedule. For reference, his VIN (P0645x) showed up in the app on Friday morning (01-Mar). Unfortunately, I won't be able to join in on the factory tour as I'm out of the country right now. Anyone want an adopted son for their future factory tour?

Amazing how, when I talk about the factory tour, you can pick out the EV geeks in the room. My car will probably be ready end of March early April.
