Wish we could "ask for the update".....

Yea, this. Something like you can go to siriusxm.com and ask for the reactivation signal for your xm radio. if you could use the app to "check for update and then download" that would be nice. That way those of us who are anal retentive about these things could get them..normal people would just get it whenever it happens to download.

Still on 4.5. But I may have been the last person that got 4.5. So, I was just about expecting the same for 5.6. Though the order doesn't seem to be the same necessarily.

In for tire repair (nail, slow leak), and they updated my OS.

    As others have stated already...
The heads up nav is way better, better traffic identification, and very fluid as it turns with you.

They changed the radio tuning dial UI a bit. Like the side buttons better, a bit cleaner... but the dial itself is a too simple. Needs a little more graphic love with the next UI updates.

Car goes into a deeper sleep after a couple of hours (not sure how long this is), so just need to wait about 3-5 seconds while it wakes up.

90% charge appears to be a couple miles less than before, but also seems to be more stable/accurate in the rated miles shown.

Just happen to have my service appointment two days ago and asked for a firmware 5.6 upgrade and they gave it to me no problem.

One thing people can do is just call your local service center and see if they can perform a one off update for you. I read in the new release notes that all cars have a built in access point to the service center's network for future upgrades. Worth a try.

    My 2 cents on 5.6.

    1. Biggest pro by far is the increased supercharger speed. This isn't in the release notes and I think has been overlooked. I have a 60kwh and was getting 80kw/hr charging (266mi/hr, 236amps, 324v) today at Fremont. It used to be capped around 65kw/hr
    2. Maps are awesome now. It rotates really well and street names rotates with it. Compass works really well. Love the updated traffic indicators. There are little red or yellow blocks now instead of a wide long bar. Caching of the maps is pretty cool and feels quite snappy now. And now when you use voice navigation search by address, it goes straight into navigation mode. Nice!
    3. Energy saving mode works as advertised for me. I left my car unplugged last two nights and lost only 1 mile with about 12hrs of idle time each time. Haven't tried charging at home yet though. You can tell your car is asleep if you jump into the car right away and you see the big Tesla logo on your front dash. It takes about 10secs for the car to boot up from sleep and you're ready to go.
    4. Wifi is nice and works well. It's nice to join the Fremont delivery center wifi while you're supercharging. Browser still sucks though. Can't wait for Chrome. Looks like it doesn't connect to WPA2 Enterprise networks though.
    5. Updated rated charge is actually better for me. I supercharged to 90% today and got my rating back up to 176 miles instead of the 171 miles I was getting on FW 4.5.
    6. Updated creep setting resolved the problem of the car twitching when the brake isn't fully engaged at a stop.
    7. Noticed some updated font and alignment in the song and album titles in the media player and it also shows your battery trim (60, 85, P85) on the front dash when your car is "off"

We're getting spoiled with these enhancements. Can't wait for the next one and very grateful for every one of these features.

Just to clarify... It appeared to do the initial routing and take traffic into account. Did not observe any re-routing.

But remember that service centers are busy working already and ~20,000 cars spread among ~35 centers would mean ~500 cars per service center. Nobody should get upset if their service center declines individual requests.

(And, no, I don't have the update yet..... ;-))
  • Nov 8, 2013
    Btrflyl8e
Hmm..I recently got 5.6, have energy saving mode on but my car doesn't appear to be going into sleep mode. I'll test a couple of things that could be preventing this and see if I can get it to sleep.

I just checked, if you pull up the charging screen it will respond showing doors open, brake lights. I didn't try charge port but I assume that will also display. Pretty cool that you've been showing off your MS to royalty! #gottaloveautocorrect

Regarding WPA2 (aka really long passwords)...
I thought this was going to be an issue too, as I tried entering my password for this several times with no luck. It's really an issue of how fast you can enter those really long passwords, before the software drops you out of entry mode on that field. Finally got it on the fifth try.

Tesla needs to fix, or remove, time sensitive entry for this, as I believe most people will not be quick enough to get their codes entered.
  • Nov 8, 2013
    gg_got_a_tesla
Should there be support for Copy-Paste now? One could pull up the code in an email on the browser and paste it in. My WPA2 password is 26 characters long! I remember suffering when the then-iPhone OS didn't have copy-paste!

Still no luck with an update notification. I do have weak AT&T coverage - the car shows one bar - at my home (haven't had OTA updates since I moved house in June). May have to grudgingly go to the Burlingame service center.

Well, it actually ended up being 11 hours parked at work yesterday in mid-50's weather, and when I got back in, I was down to 124.

Interestingly, about an hour after I had parked it in the morning with 128 miles left on the pack, I decided to test the speed of connectivity of the remote app. As expected it took about 45 seconds to connect, but the interesting thing was that in that 1 hour, I had already lost 3 miles of range... as I was down to 125. After that I lost only 1 mile in the next 10 hours...

Given the lag I saw with the remote, it appears the car DID hibernate. I also can confirm the dash had to boot up when I got in to drive home at the end of the day.

I was rather hoping I would have only lost a mile or so...

I only have 1 bar in my garage as well. My car downloaded the update and notified me of the update after I spent 45 minutes inside a Best Buy. I was not plugged in. So it should download the update while you are parked even if you aren't charging while you are away from home with better signal.
  • Nov 8, 2013
    gg_got_a_tesla
Thanks, Denarius. Hoping for that to happen at my workplace where the company has installed AT&T signal boosters recently and I see pretty much a full signal. I just haven't been lucky with the VIN update roulette thus far, I guess.

When did you get 4.5? I got it on 7/27/2013, a full 9+ weeks after people started reporting OTA updates. By that time, people were already getting their second or third update to version 4.5, and the European 5.5 was already spotted for a couple of weeks, and two weeks later, 5.0 was getting delivered with new US cars. I felt so left-out... =( The same thing happened with the version before 4.5 (I forget the version number). And now, I'm afraid it's going to happen once again. I'll be so happy if I get it before 2014 this time around.
  • Nov 8, 2013
    PearlModelS
I also received 4.5 very late in the game, right around when you received your update. But this morning when I got in the car, the update was waiting for me. Can't wait to get back to the station to check out the update & be able to charge at 1am at 80A!

Hopefully you will get the notification icon soon.
  • Nov 8, 2013
    SFOTurtle
I guess it's true that not having any bars will ensure that you don't get the OTA update, but the flip isn't. I have plenty of bars at home in the garage and in the office, and nothing yet. I probably got bumped to the end of the list for repeatedly asking to get the update when I had the car in for service three weeks ago. Serves me right.
  • Nov 8, 2013
    jomo25
Got 4.5 on 7/28. I went out of town, parked at the airport for 4 days, and came back on the 7/28 with it ready to go. Didn't install it til a couple days later as I was busy and didn't want to think about it since 4.4 was rock solid for me at the time.

I usually only get 1 bar at home, sometimes even none. Which could be why it took soloing for me to get it, and parking at the airport may have given it the signal strength it needed. But I'm 2-4 bars at work each day. But perhaps they only pushed it at night back then? Or I was just last in line. Can't tell which.

As of today, I still haven't gotten 5.6. Interestingly, I had to park at the airport all day on Wednesday, and didn't get it pushed.

    No...

In 5.6 (and possibly in 5.0), there is a wifi profile included so the car can connect to wifi at a service center. Once you're on 5.6, Tesla states they will prioritize update to wi-fi connected cars first. So I guess when they release 5.7, that you could go sit outside the SC to see if Tesla will send it to you -- but there's no guarantee they'll send it while you are there...
  • Nov 8, 2013
    Eggplant
Though, it would be cool if in the future you could park at the SC and ask for a wifi update. That would require a lot less effort on their part, especially if the service coordinators could trigger it.

  • Nov 8, 2013

    No.

My understanding is that "inventory" cars include cancelled purchases ("orphans"), test drive vehicles ("marketing"), service vehicles ("loaners"), and tradeins.

Guys, given that Tesla said the rollout of 5.6 won't be complete until the end of next week, I suspect only about half of the folks have it. I'm P1577, VIN 1653 and don't have it yet either.

I understand the update-itis--I check my car every morning to see if the update downloaded overnight so I can install it before my morning commute...but unfortunately the firmware threads are starting to get full of "I don't have it yet" posts.

Not to be rude or to put anyone on the spot...just saying that I don't think those type of posts are useful.

Tesla has said the rollouts are automated. They're not going to see your comment on TMC and prioritize your update over others (too bad)!

Just picked up my MS from the SC where they installed 5.6. They gave me a loaner with 4.5, and I really liked how easy it was to switch from AM to FM to XM when listening to the radio. That feature was absent with 5.0, so glad to see that 5.6 as brought this back. I know also can turn off the chimes on the PDC if I want. I will probably leave them on anyway.

How does one turn on/off sleep mode? I searched all the screens to no avail.

For those looking at VIN #'s on the roll-out, I am VIN P 8,XXX. I got 5.6 last night, installed fine this morning, all new features seem to be working great, even though I have terrible cell service in my garage (1.5 bars). It also detected and hooked up to my home wifi easily, even though the signal in my garage is pretty faint.

Great point. I have figured one should always do a reboot after any update. Those who aren't yet seeing drastically improved sleep vampire loss with 5.6, have you rebooted since the update?

It took reboots to shake out other features in the past. It makes sense it would be the case for the sleep feature.
  • Nov 9, 2013

I just got 5.6 after taking my MS in for service. In 6 hrs I lost 14 miles. Vehicle IS in "sleep" mode. Takes about 20 seconds to come back online after entering and hitting the break pedal. Yes, I rebooted the center console.

I got the 5.6 update last week. So far so good. The wi-fi connectivity is nice to have. Certainly seems faster than via 3G. The sleep mode works well, doesn't take long to awake and there's an improvement in "vampire loss" as a result. I haven't run into any other problems so far.

    Wifi:

I just got 5.6 a couple of days ago and tested my Karma 4g hotspot:
    Karma | The Pay-As-You-Go Mobile Wi-Fi Provider

The Karma has a "portal" page where you login/password before internet access. The Tesla seemed not able to deal with it. In fact, it locked out going back to 3g. I was close to our Austin service center so I dropped in. Got very prompt attention! However, no joy. The fix, at present, is to not use a hotspot with a portal page and reboot the Tesla if you do attempt it.

How about Sigs first? Or early VINs? Or folks with more than one Tesla? Or people who own TSLA? Or 85s before 60s? I can think of a whole bunch of reasons why different people might "deserve" to be first in line for updates but in the total scheme of things it's not going to make much difference.

P.S. No update here yet. :-(

    - - - Updated - - -

Sorry, IMHO I don't think those should trump people who have pre-paid for service. I agree it's not going to make a whole helluva lot of difference in the end (a few weeks perhaps), but randomness seems an odd way of doing this. Don't think it will make much difference after this update with wi-fi. I'll just stop by the service center on the way to or from the office to get the next push if there's much of a wait.
  • Nov 9, 2013
    NigelM
I'd love to have pre-paid service; tried to buy it, no deal, and was promised a pro-rata refund on my fully paid service when it does become available. See nothing comes out really fair and the point I was making is that there'll always be a group that feels it's unfair if someone else is prioritized; random is the safe way to go. Once we all have WiFi it becomes a moot point in any case.

Received mine yesterday as well. Two things stand out:

    1. On the pano roof, the 15% setting was eliminated. I think that was a bad call. 15% was perfect for keeping the car cool on hot days while parked. 20% opens it too far and 12% doesn't create any airflow.

    2. The north-is-up setting should either be on a separate button or in the settings screen. Every time you touch the map screen to pan, shrink, or expand it goes into goofy mode rather than staying at north-is-up. It's really a pain to use.

    Everything else seems fine.

    Double Whine after 5.6 Update

Ok, let me start by saying I love the 5.6 update; everything runs more smoothly--and faster--from the maps to the web browser. One thing is weird though...I used to have the whine that comes from flooring it--often referred to as the pinched balloon whine--and after the update it's, well, different. Now, it happens less often at lower speeds, but at full throttle from 50 mph+ I now have a "double whine." That is, two separate and distinct whining noises starting a fraction of a second apart but coming from slightly different locations. It's not really noticeable with the stereo on, but very clearly audible without. Has anyone experienced this since the update? I have a 60kw MS, and this happens at speeds >50 at 240kw of power (completely floored, essentially). Is anyone able to replicate this...or for that matter confirm that it does NOT happen on their car? If it's the new normal, I will skip the service visit...

Just an update to the preconditioning issue posted earlier, I verified this morning that my car did pre-condition the cabin via shore power.

Saturday morning it did it while ramping down the charge rate, I was charging at 30a and the meter jumped to 38a when I turned on the cabin heat
Sunday it was completed before I switched it on and the power meter showed 8a and my HPWC was doing the green cylon thing so power was flowing.

I have a doctor appt on Friday down the street from the new SvC in Scottsdale. If I haven't gotten it by Thursday, I am going to call to ask them if I can pop on by Friday for the upgrade. I am refusing to clean my screen until I get the screen cleaning mode in 5.6. And it's getting pretty mucked up.

Anybody notice that the info screen (after tapping the Tesla logo at the top of the 17" screen) has changed and no longer dynamically shows the status of the exterior lights? I was curious about when my brake lights go on during regenerative braking. Is the exterior light information elsewhere now?

When dark, turn on your rear cam while driving you can see when the lights come on.

I've heard this is a change they made in 5.6 (curious as to the reasoning ). You now have to rely on the charging screen or the controls page if you want real-time status of the car.

Another thing I'm noticing regarding the map. The font is smaller even with 2x text size. 1x is pretty much unreadable. The traffic lines (red, yellow, green) are a lot smaller too.

I find this change perplexing as well. I assumed that all images of the car were "live" and that they were all generated by the same lines of code. No idea why they would want to create separate code for the about-your-car info screen.

What do you guys use that screen for? I've never used it except to read release notes.

I do not believe this to be so, considering I have a car in the 3,000 range!
I'll take the Wisconsin superchargers over the software update, though.

Correct. I have a car in the 200 range and no update yet.

I, too, used it for that purpose. As others have stated, why remove it?

Looks like I'm still experiencing range loss while the car is sleeping -- and at a higher rate than I did with 4.5 (which would lose ~7-8 miles per day, and averaged 7.2 miles lost per day the one time it was parked for a week at the airport).

On 5.6, I noticed it was losing ~3 miles while parked at work -- similar to 4.5. But I didn't take any specific notes on it until yesterday/this morning. We returned from an overnight road trip around 1:30pm yesterday and the car had 40 miles remaining rated range shown. I had it charge to 75% overnight, and I checked it just before 7am -- the dash showed 141 rated miles, and the charging screen showed it had added 107 miles of range... so 40+107-141=6 miles lost in approx 17.5 hours. If that loss holds, I'm now losing ~10 miles of range per day on 5.6. With the holiday today, I don't think I'll drive it, so will monitor it at ~1:30pm today and again tomorrow morning.

The car appears to be going to sleep since I see the dash doing its ~11 second wake up, and Visual Tesla gives me the sleep warning if I open that app while the car is sleeping. I did try rebooting both screens when we returned from the trip yesterday.

My car has been parked for 4 days. It did not charge and I lost 7 miles.

I wonder if it's temperature dependent? I know how 4.5 behaved last summer when I was away (Charged exactly 2.5 kWh every other day while sitting). I'll be going away again in mid-December and hope to have 5.6 by then so I can see. I'm still on 4.5.

In addition to rebooting the screens, you may want to try pulling the screen/3G connection fuse. Not sure what if it'll help, but it's worth a shot. Let us know if and how you manage to fix it.

I would love to see some comparison numbers for this. How much range is lost at 70 at 50, etc...
Being that I am not in a cold environment, my contribution would be of limited help. I hope to be taking my MS to the mountains this winter, where I frequently see temps at 0. I may not have the option of plugging in, so this would be valuable info to me.

BTW, overnight (11 hours) I lost 1 mile of range on 5.6 in sleep mode. Garaged at 70 or so.

On 4.5, temperature did not seem to impact range loss -- my car was pretty consistent at losing 7-8 miles per 24 hours, and ~3 miles when parked for 8-9 hours when at work. Temps have ranged from ~60-110+, but no experience with anything below ~60...

On 4.5, I lost close to 10 miles rated range at temps below 50. havent gone below 28 yet, that will be next week ;)

    invalid attachment. :(

but if that's what really happened, that's actually kinda funny. at least you weren't downgraded to a software limited 40 or something like that LOL

i'm sure they can fix it if you give them a call...

I'd be willing to be that a reboot will fix that.

Note: Added this problem to the Model S Firmware 5.x Bug Tracker Wiki.

IF the reboot doesn't fix ... one call to Tesla (Factory) and they can send a note to engineering to correct it.

Mine was missing the spoiler at one time and it was resolved in 4-6 hours remotely.

Over the weekend i had a chance to leave my car unplugged and garaged for more than 6 hours. I have 5.6

    Day 1
    13 hours unplugged
Rated Range lost = 4 miles
Temp was in high 40s F

    Day 2
    12 hours unplugged
    Gained 3 Rated :scared:
Temp in beginning was in Low 50s but low 30s when I drove off

Is this like when you put a battery in the fridge to eek out a little more juice? My standard charge has now gone up from 223 to 229. Very odd but im not complaining. I was originally worried my last data points might indicate a linear loss of 4 rated miles each 6hrs but that's nkt the case. Maybe the most range lost is in the beginning before the deep sleep.

I had been waiting patiently to receive Firmware 5.6. Today, I called Tesla Service and asked them nicely if they could push an update to me. 2 hours later, the update is here. Car is installing the now. Nice!

The loaner that I had recently with 4.5 was a Plus but the in-car display did not include "+" in the art. Just another data point.

My P85+ never showed a plus in any of the software windows. 4.5 or 5.6. Are you sure it ever did show it? I believe I emailed ownership and they said that the + does not show up in the software.

For clarification, I emailed them when I first received the car.

I had to call Fremont Service twice to get one of them to try to contact their engineers to do this. He couldn't guarantee anything but it was much better response than the first rep who said he couldn't do anything for me but to try calling Ownership.

I also asked if they could give priority to those who prepaid a service plan, both replying they never thought of that before and didn't think it was a bad idea. I couldn't tell if that was a standard reply to politely ignore a request. ;)

You should be able to do that from your Tesla page. If it's forbidden by law in your state I guess you can try to write a letter to your Congressman, lobbyist, etc., maybe start one of those "We the People" petitions that seems to go no where.

It's not forbidden, it just needs Tesla to get their act together.

I was hoping by the time I get my car back we could get Verizon and ditch AT&T
  • Nov 11, 2013
    dflye
Whatever the monthly service rate will be, I'd pay a surcharge to NOT be on AT&T! Having worked for the Death Star in the past, and having zero coverage with them at home (versus 3 bars through Verizon), I'd be insane to prefer them as a network provider for my car!

I have a plus and the displays have always said "P85".
