Ames Now that my P90D is 4 months old and has around 5000 miles / 8000 km on it, my 90% has settled on 225 miles / 362 km. My first charge got me 236 miles / 380 km.�

rocketdallas 18 months with my 60 and I am at 163 rated miles at 90% and 185 rated miles at 100%. I asked about this drop in rated miles during my last annual service visit. They checked my battery and told me everything is fine: the drop in rated miles was due to how the algorithm has adjusted to my driving style and that my overall battery capacity remains high.
The battery is under warranty, of course, so I will keep a watch on it, but I'm still worried about the drop in my number.�

msnow It is a little low. I got as low as 246 but after the last few firmware updates (currently on 2.20.30) and probably more importantly battery calibration/balancing by driving down to 10% then charging to 100% a couple of times I'm consistently at 253/254 at 90% with Range Mode off. When delivered it was 256/257.�

But all driving has been in nicer weather.�

JPUConn Car is new to me as of last week - it's a CPO that was a one owner out of Denver. Service manager said my vehicle has the original battery and drive unit so January 2013 build.
After I got it I did range charge to 100% and drove down to about 18% before charging back up to 90 with no change to the numbers and then did a road trip so charged back up to 100% and did see 256 miles- maybe i need to do more reading on 'balancing'.
I've had the car plugged in just about all the time when home or at my destinations but that is not my intention going forward. There are a bunch of 30 amp GE Watt-stations at my work and I plug the car in at work every day and let it run up to the default 90% and will only plug in at home if I am going to need more range than it takes me to get to work (~50 miles one way) or on the weekend.�

My 90D's range is now down to 237 miles of rated range at 90% and is 9 months old.
It seems I would have been better off ordering an 85D.
I have a service appointment next week. We will see what can be done to address this issue.�

wdolson The battery may need conditioning. Try charging to 100% and then drive the car soon after (within an hour of getting to 100%). The charging circuitry conditions the battery when you charge to 100%. A lot of people see their range increase back to closer to original.�

tinm Yay, I hit 228! My 2013 S85 (45K mi) 90% has been 227 since last fall, but this morning it hit 228. Prolly had to do with the garage being 95�F all day yesterday and never dropped below 80� last night. I've noticed the car's fan turning on loud while the car's charging of the HPWC. This heat wave may get me back to 230, who knows! I still miss 242 though. I think that was the peak 90% I used to get back in 2013.�

Brass Guy I charged to 90% last night and got 219 reported by the app, the dash read 220.
Pretty low, but probably balance/algorithm issues. I haven't been below 40% in a months, nor over 90% in even longer. I often charge to 70%.

I'm planning an extensive road trip soon so I expect the numbers to change a little.�

jerry33 I don't know if BMW does this, but Mercedes doesn't give you the full usage of the pack and then uses the extra to hide any degradation.
In the case of the Tesla, it's more likely to be the algorithm and balancing rather than actual degradation.�

Tesla, either there is a difference in the 90 battery you're selling now vs the one you sold me last year, or my battery has a defect... Sadly I don't have the patience to make a big fuss about this to my local service center. Besides, they're likely too busy to care anyhow.

msnow Jeff, I've confirmed they changed the battery and part number sometime between February and April this year. I've seen screenshots of the battery sticker to prove it. I'm in the same boat you are as far as range loss just not quite as bad. The "theory" is these refreshed batteries are locked 100 kWh battery packs which accounts for the higher capacity at 90% and 100% but still only using 90 kWh of the battery. Pure speculation but it would explain what we are seeing. Time will tell.�

2virgule5 Yes time will tell, including whether or not I'll see fast degradation on mine. Also, it is highly possible that those numbers factor other optimizations made to the car (less weight, better aerodynamics with refreshed nose etc). The same KWh would then give higher rated miles to reach the new EPA rating of 294 miles for a 90D.�

jeffro01 Well that's a bummer... It's hard to get frustrated to the point of making noise as there isn't anywhere I go where range is ever going to really matter... On the other hand, I'm not getting the numbers I thought I was going to get... Or at least that's my perception..
I tried running the battery down to 0 but never could get it to the point of refusing to drive without the risk of backing out of my garage and not being able to get back in it again... I got it down far enough where the heater stopped producing heat... Charged back up to 90% and actually lost 2 miles of range... Go figure...

msnow The only way I was able to bring mine up from [email�protected]% to 253/254 was to drive it down to about 10-20 miles and then charge it fully overnight to 100%. That triggered the battery management system in the battery. It doesn't trigger at 90%. Just F.Y.I.�

msnow Hang in there. The BMS (Battery Management System) takes a while to recalibrate (sometimes days). If it is going to recalibrate your RR watch your regular 90% charges. They should go up.�

jdw My July 2015 85D 90% charging history, YTD. Most of the sudden changes were firmware updates, except the drop in May, which happened after I left the car parked for three weeks at 50% charge. Mileage is about 9000 and I usually charge to 90% every morning and use 15-20% a day. Car was 239 when new. There were 4-5 range charges with a few of them being deeper discharges.

jdw I keep track of my daily charges in Numbers, an OS X spreadsheet app. The graph is a standard bar chart from Numbers, filtered on 90% charges, which most of mine are. I started doing this last December as I wanted a baseline and some trending.
Right now I am capturing Month, Day, Final %Charge, Starting %Charge, Rated & Ideal miles, kWh added, charge time and mileage as well as firmware updates. I use both Visible Tesla and Remote S to get the numbers.�

Middleseat I don't have a 70D, just a RWD S70, but my 90% varies between 208-211. I have only charged to 100% once, and got 231 miles.
I have only had the car for 3 weeks and haven't calibrated the battery (yet). That's next on my to-do list!�

wdolson I have a refresh S90D that's approaching 2 months old. My 90% has been around 268-269 and if I drive carefully my actual range is a few miles below that. Since the last update it's changed a bit. The first time I drove it after the update, the range was only 264 and my actual range was around 250. When I got home, the HPWC wouldn't charge the car. It had red lights and the charging port turned red.
I finally turned off the breaker and rebooted the HPWC. After that I've been consistently getting 270 miles at 90% and the actual range running errands around town is almost exactly the same as the rated miles. I did 9.1 miles of in town driving today and it said I had 261 range left when I got home. I'll see what it does highway tomorrow, I have to go down to Salem, OR and back.�

Brass Guy I just got home today from my trip from MA to CA and back, with a few side trips. 8096 miles total.
I range charged to 245 miles at 100% before I left. 90% was consistently 221 miles.
The lowest I got down to was 14 miles, and I did charge to 100% once more during the trip. I always beat EVTripPlanner's energy use, and often did better than range miles, even using AC driving 70 or 75.
My longest leg was 266 miles from Old Faithful (plug share) to Sheridan SC. That was a real nail biter until I gained 15 miles coming off the mountain just before the end. Finished that one with 42 left!
So my 90% didn't change like I thought it would, but it doesn't really matter. It seems I can go about anywhere in this thing!�

Texas P85DL, current 90% Rated Range is 225. I always operate the car in Ludicrous mode. When I took delivery late in May 2015 and for several months thereafter, my 90% Rated Range was consistently 227 miles. By December 2015 typical 90% had dropped to 224. In 2016, the 90% dipped a few times to 223. It then gradually reversed the trend, holding steady at 224, then rising to 225 the last time I set 90%, a few days ago in late July 2016. Car has 7055 miles on the odometer. The 100% level also reversed its downward trend, rising from 249 earlier this year to 251 when I set a full charge a few weeks ago. When new, a100% charge would register 253 miles of range. The period when the mileage improved coincides with my decision to routinely charge only to 80%, which I dropped after a few months down to 70% routine daily charge. This may or may not explain why the range numbers improved. Last noted firmware change went to Firmware v 7.1 ( 7.1(2.24.86) installed around 062416�

wdolson Your rated range probably started going up because you charged to 100%. It's good to charge to 100% once in a while if you're going to drive it right away. The batteries don't like to sit at 100% charge, but charging to 100% conditions and balances the battery pack. If the range starts to drop, it's a good idea to charge it to 100% a couple of times and see if it improves.�

So about a 2.5% reduction so far.
I normally schedule charge daily to 75% and only go up to 90 at the end of month or for longer road trips.
The S spends most of its time plugged in to a HPWC.�

Ames You guys are doing really well. My 90% is 221at 10,250 miles. I am beginning to think that almost any P85D has better range than my P90DL regardless of mileage, including the ones we have out here. I have asked Tesla about it and they say it's normal and is calculated according to the configuration of my car and how I drive and the environment. My lifetime Wh/Mile is 341. The only reason I can think I'm getting such low rated range is because I use the AC 100% of the time and during the summer the battery needs cooling for a few minutes whenever the car is started.�

Polly Wog For my classic 85, I've been consistently at 237 rated miles for my 90% and 264 for my 100% since early March. Recently, I did two 100% charges on consecutive days (I've never done that before), and my 100% was 263 each time. Last night, my 90% charge was 238 rated miles. No complaints. I'm about 150 miles short of reaching the 30,000 mile mark.�

guest Nov. 2015 Model S 70D with about 10500 miles, daily charged to 90%, and charged to 100% probably 8 times since taking delivery:
- 90% SoC seems to be settling around 214 rated miles (bounced between 215 and 214 when new).
- 100% SoC has been 236-238 rated miles (most recent 100% was 236, but the car has never charged higher than 238... even on its first 100% charge the week after we took delivery).
Putting things in perspective, this is worlds better than the Leaf that I had from 2012 through 2015... The Leaf lost an average of 1% pack capacity for every 1000 miles driven based on my tracking with LeafSpy. We turned the car in at the end of its lease with ~21k miles on it and about 20% pack degradation.�

guest Comment on your Leaf... that is definitely the original Leaf battery issue.
Our 2015 Leaf just crossed over 35k miles in 11 months. No degradation of the battery at all. Still get ~100 miles in city or ~80 on highway.
Still cannot wait for our Tesla to come in though�
