UPS commercial trucking doesn't work this way. This isn't a customer focused area for UPS. The truck drivers drive all-day-everyday, they could care less about their cargo and just want a paycheck. Most of a truckers deliveries are to commercial businesses, so being cheery and responding to your phone calls is the last thing on their mind.

No one cares about your stuff the way you do, so it's hard for me to believe that a truck driver is going to get on the phone to talk to you when he's got deadlines to make. There are other things in his truck that he has to get delivered, and we're just a line item on an endless sheet of paper.

Be patient! It's the holidays, the drivers are people too, and I'm sure they are trying their best.

UPS doesn't own any car carriers or have drivers trained to operate them. They are typically contracted to coordinate these types of services by a company like Tesla. The actual carriers are typically subcontractors. Tesla is very much a vertically integrated company with enough to do. This really isn't their expertise. They need to focus on building great cars. Most small and independent carriers don't have tracking capability. Tesla could install RFID in your car but I'm sure we'd all be concerned that they were tracking us after delivery. Although many drivers do it, you really don't want to encourage them to use their phones en route. A call to verify delivery time 24 hrs out is typical. The lead times on delivery seem exaggerated as to under-promise and over-deliver. Typically, carriers can reach most point in the U.S., excluding far outlying areas, within 4 days. GPS units are several hundred dollars each. Then someone has to coordinate how they all get back to Fremont, etc. It can get quite complex.

Did a factory tour ths afternoon and was able to see my (seemingly) complete car VIN 3,092 in the "parts shortage" area. Looks like it needs a detailing and paint armor but that is it. :). Car is absolutely gorgeous.
Got my mvpa turned around in 1 hour and will drop off payment tomorrow. Still possible that it will leave the factory by the 31st!

    Today's somewhat comical shipping updated:

    * The car left the factory on 12/21 to some distribution facility to await further shipping
    * Per a call with our inside DS yesterday, delivery was scheduled for 12/28 and we should hear from the driver 24hrs before
    * No word from the driver today, so called for another update. Their system was updated with driver contact information for our car so our DS called the driver and learned that he had just delivered a load to Texas and our Seattle bound car was definitely not on the truck.
    * Our DS called UPS Autogistics for an update but just got a generic voicemail. He was going to escalate our shipping query to some manager and commented that we're in a similar position to a lot of other people where the wires have gotten crossed in the shipping process.

BTW, as others have mentioned, our inside DS has been excellent and not give the slightest hint of being tired of hearing from me. :)

I love these Delivery Notes - always recall my first look at The Model S, and here we are - Teslas flying East, South, North, and even West (Hawaii!).
Quick preview teaser for those still waiting: I awakened Christmas Day to a Version 4.1 update, and blue sky reflecting off the metallic blue frunk hood.
After much family time, as the afternoon was about to sink to evening, as others were sinking into an eggnog by the fire...I headed out, along winding, hilly farm roads west of Boston. I absolutely flew past winter fields and along centuries-old stone walls. In the foot steps of Paul Revere and Thoreau, Model S 1845 cut air like a chainsaw through butter, loving the encouragement coming form the accelerator, asking for more, tightly hugging corners meant for stagecoach. And as I felt my body sink into the driver's seat as G-forces rearranged my innards, I thought to myself - really - of how much fun the wait was because we shared the wait. I am aching to share the thrill of that drive with you all. WOW! So get your cars so you can share this thrill.

    Enjoy!

If Tesla is going to use independent contractors to deliver their cars, they probably need to select carriers who are wiling to communicate with the DS/DE teams. I understand that truckers don't care about the nature of their cargo, but they ultimately do care about whether they are selected to work for Tesla or need to find other work. I doubt that its too much to ask that they check in with Tesla once a day.

Tesla still shows my delivery for tomorrow, but the driver has been silent - he doesn't answer his phone and has not called to arrange delivery.
  • Dec 28, 2012
    tdiggity
I agree with you. As revolutionary as Tesla is, it sucks that they cannot transform all aspects of the experience. In my day job, I have to ask companies to switch from Internet explorer 6 still so they can experience our product better! So I can imagine how frustrated Tesla employees probably are.

Tesla knows that people are mad about all this. But, I hope everyone with these types of delays and feelings of being left uninformed will tell their DS this. And, you should private message georgeB and let him know too!

Mark - My fingers are crossed for you, I hope they call tomorrow and say "I'm outside your house with your car!"

Given how much large companies care for their employees--similar to ants at a picnic--there's not much reason for them to put forth extra effort, unless that's just their nature to do so. Also a lot of truck drivers are just contractors and are paid so much a mile to haul cargo. They aren't paid to be a DS substitute. I wouldn't expect them to call until just before delivery and perhaps a day in advance so that they can drop off the car in the least amount of time and get on to the next delivery.

    Jerry,

First, I find your comments terribly helpful and insightful.

But, I disagree with your position on this issue - I don't think anyone should expect a driver to become a DS, but it is desired for them to at least answer (whether manual or GPS automated) requests for position and for outlook from Tesla! This puts the driver in the chain of DS support, rather than substituting for them.

For those that want to be able to reach their driver on a cell phone, directly, I agree that's not a reasonable expectation. 8 (

Jerry: I have a huge respect for your wisdom over many posts, but I gotta believe that some trucking companies either 1) can geotrack their trucks or 2) would hire the service-oriented drivers necessary to deliver 20,000 large heavy costly-to-ship items per year. . . . but maybe I'm a dreamer.
  • Dec 28, 2012
    gjunky
I assume the cars are not in sleep mode when they are being shipped which means the computers are on which should mean that Tesla can see where the cars are (the car communicates with Tesla). This if course doesn't give them a real idea of the delivery time but they should be able to see where the car is and if is just sitting in a parking lot somewhere.

BTW: I know the Signature series came with a year of cell data service included. What happened to all the non-sig cars that were delivered? It sounds like they all have active data connections.

My cousin is P10003 and reserved at very end of August. He is getting a Perf 85kWh and was originally given a delivery estimate of May, but since he's not waiting for 2013 red and isn't a 40kWh or 60kWh that doesn't go into production until March, he's just finalized his order (to lock in before the price increase) and is being told February or March for his new delivery window. So hopefully some of you will be in the same boat and can move up in the line in a similar fashion!

My car was supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I got a call from my DS just now and he said it won't be here tomorrow. My car, for some reason, is sitting at a logistics hub in New Jersey.

My delivery window was Dec. 7-21 (after the original "November" date). It looks like Tesla will miss the back end of that window by at least 9 or 10 days.

Also, my DS mentioned that HQ was going to take care of titling, registration, and license plates. I said "wait, hold the phone, I'm getting vanity plates." I can't believe they don't ask about this--it seems like half of the Model S owners or more have vanity plates. Since I'm getting vanity plates, I had to call Tesla ownership and tell them. Turns out that because of that I will have to go to the DMV myself and do all the titling/registration. (I don't blame Tesla for this, as it probably has to do with how logistics or laws work out).

My delivery experience continues to sour as I watch people who have been standing in line 1.5 years less than me driving around in their Model S.

I'm having something of a similar issue with a delivery hub. I was under the strong impression that the truck would leave the factory and would, at some point, drop the car off to me at my selected delivery location. So when they told me the car left Fremont yesterday (a 9 hour drive away) so I assumed I should see the car sometime this weekend. Then, today, I get an email containing the link to the video walk-through. At the bottom of that email it says my car should be deliverd sometime between 1/4 and 1/8. I replied to the email asking for clarification and asking why it would take so long. The reply I got indicated that the car would go to a NW delivery hub first. Now I'm really confused. I've asked a couple of folks for more clarity and will report back when I know more.

*update* I'm being told that Tesla has recently begun sending cars to regional delivery hubs in order to better facilitate deliveries. My assumption is that it will help Tesla when they only have one or two cars going to a specific region/town. They could collect cars and wait for a full car carrier.

Either way, it seems as though my excitement about getting my car this weekend was premature.

My car, apparently with several other Portland, OR cars is in Portland having arrived yesterday. I'm told by the trucking company no delivery to me though until Monday because the cars have to be detailed first and there's backlog at the detailer.

I just got the same story, my car left Fremont on Dec 22, the driver spent the holidays in the SE, and my car is heading to NJ now, where it will arrive on Monday. I assume it will get back to me in Pittsburgh sometime next week. My DS apologized for not being able to pinpoint the location of my car, but told me the name of the shipping company. In three phone calls I was able to get the dispatcher of my truck, who pinpointed my location exactly. While it isn't good news, I am certainly glad to be informed, as now I won't be on pins and needles like I have been the past few days.

Many, perhaps most, trucking companies do that for a variety of reasons. Whether you can be privy to that information depends on the trucking company and their policies. It's possible for high value items that a too open policy can put the driver and his cargo at risk from thieves.

I've had a lot of "stuff" delivered by truck, some of it expensive--at least BMW 5-series expensive, on various occasions and all I ever got was a call from the dispatch office telling me that the truck would arrive the next day (once in a while it was two days, but usually one), then a second call in the morning of the delivery to make sure I'd be there, and finally a call from the driver saying he was just about to arrive. I wouldn't expect the Model S delivery to be any different.

I'd suggest that the dispatch office, rather than the truck driver, is the correct point of contact. Truck driving is actually fairly hard work, and rest stops should be rest stops for the driver, not a different kind of work. If the truck has six Model S on it (I think that's the number), and he calls each destination once a day, it will take probably ten minutes per call. That's an hour extra a day--quite a lot.

I'm expecting my finalize email soon (12,848) and will be soon the 85kwh.

I've been told by the reps at the Tesla store that if I choose air suspension I could jump the line since many 40/60 kwh reservations are without air as an option.

Can anybody provide some empirical data to back this up. I may elect to go for 85kwh with air if it means I will get my car sooner than later given non air cars don't start production until March. Comes down to how many people before me are not getting air.

    Thoughts?

After a couple of weeks of "Your car is in transit," I found out on Boxing Day that my car (P2009/VIN1929) came into the NY Service Center the day before...Happy Christmas to them, not me! Because of Christmas craziness I didn't finalize my financing until today. We ended up going with Bank of America, 3%/60 months, 90% of the purchase price, and it was super easy, only took a couple of hours and they have a check coming to us via FedEx for Saturday delivery.

I've been in touch with the NY Service Center, and they have been very responsive, answering my calls right away and getting me whatever info I needed. They could have delivered my car tomorrow, but it's supposed to snow/rain, so I pushed it off for Sunday morning (12/30!). When I asked when I would get confirmation that the date & time I requested would actually happen, my delivery specialist said "We just confirmed it: I'll see you at 10am on Sunday morning."

Sunday's forecast: 33 degrees, bright and sunny, cool and clear. 100% chance of ecstasy :)

For those interested in such things, it's a 85KwH Performance, Blue with Grey interior and matte Obeche, 21" silver wheels, pano, tech, air, sound, etc. FYI, I have heard about several people receiving their cars with temporary 19" wheels because the 21's we back-ordered...I actually need to get a set of 19" all season wheels to deal with NY winters anyway, so I was actually hoping that was the case with mine...But sadly not, my DS conformed that the 21" are on the car.

Now that the end-of-quarter push for deliveries is pretty much over, I hope that TM reconsiders their strategies regarding delivery priorities, delivery methods, and communication with reservation holders.

Early adopters with 40 and 60kWh batteries should get there cars - soon. They supported the company with their dollars, their faith, and their enthusiasm. They have been rewarded by seeing people waiting a few months get their cars while being virtually ignored. I understand the financial/stock price argument for the early delivery of the most expensive cars, but I think that fairness and ethics trump that position.

Tesla has pulled together an awesome team of engineers, designers, and production specialists. I hope they now find similarly qualified professionals with expertise in delivery logistics and communications. My car is supposed to be delivered in about two hours, but the array of delivery windows that I've received since October 2009 has me skeptical.

Maybe transit hubs and use of the factory's rail link make sense to expedite delivery - hope they get this right pretty soon. The mixed messages from Tesla ever-friendly staff have been a huge source of frustration to thousands of Tesla fans.

I've been told that TM is working on software that will allow reservation holders to track their cars throughout the build and delivery. Valid information on the TM website would be nice - right now "My Garage" tells me that the factory is building my Model S. Yesterday, the outside DS asked me if I'd received any registration paperwork. Shouldn't he know if this was sent? I was earlier told that Arizona was a state with restrictive dealers laws so I would not have a DS on the day of delivery. Don't get me wrong - I'm glad he'll be there, but its just one more communication oddity. Fingers still crossed.

Interesting news for folks in Oregon and Washington. Apparently the union that runs the UPS shipping hub in North Portland has shut the thing down until 1/2/13. They're not letting any trucks out to deliver cars.

What Tesla is doing is mobilizing all the Washington ans Oregon Delivery Specalists and sending them to the hub to remove cars one by one and take them to the Portland service center and then arrange for delivery from there. Each car they pull out requires them to execute some special release paperwork and there is no way they can control the order the cars come out in. It's purely the order the cars went in.

So, if you're in Oregon and Washington and thinking you're getting your car this weekend and haven't heard from someone yet, that's why.

P4909 just finalized paperwork today with funds to be wired on Monday, 12/31, in order to be considered a 2012 sale for tax purposes (cutting it as close as possible to year end). VIN 2570 will be direct-shipped to my home in LA with delivery sometime between 1/1-1/5. My DS mentioned that Tesla just implemented a new tracking system so they will be better able to track the location of my car during shipping to keep me updated on its progress. I'm still unclear when/how AutoNation will pickup my trade-in which was netted from my purchase price.

In addition, Tesla just sent me an email offering to schedule a 60-90 minute telephone or videoconference to walk me through the features of my car as well as a link to a password-protected instructional video (which will be publicly available in the future). I just had an electrician install a 14-50 NEMA outlet in my garage today (PM me if you want a referral to a reasonable/experienced electrician in the Ventura County / San Fernando Valley area), so all I need now is my car... Happy New Year!

Lucky you, Just 6 days from payment to delivery... and you get a video. they verified my payment on Dec 18th and my car won't be leaving Oakland until at least Jan 3. then another week to get to me. No video to watch while I am waiting. (and your VIN is over 1000 higher than mine.)

Just got VIN 3260! It will not count for 2012 even if I pay by 12/31, though....

    Why not?

It only counts if it's delivered according to the IRS. Getting a VIN and paying does not equal delivered. It has to be on the truck (assuming FOB).

 Yeah, I should have paid more attention. For some reason I thought he said he received the car with that VIN, my bad.

Update: My, as usual, awesome PS just called to let me know that my car will be shipping TODAY! I am just beaming right now. In 10 days I will have a Model S in my garage. I really just feel like this is so surreal.

I'm in a similar boat (though not nearly as bad). My car was done on Dec 22 but I won't be getting it until 1/3 or 1/4... and I'm a mere 9 hour drive from the factory!!!

Oh well, it's only a few more days and it'll make getting the car all that much sweeter.

Exactly how does the IRS determine whether the vehicle was on the truck or not?
  • Dec 30, 2012
    jerry33
Presumably the truck driver signs and dates the bill of lading. Tesla will have a record of this to show if it comes to that.
  • Dec 30, 2012
    ItsNotAboutTheMoney
Taxpayer: it was on the truck. -7500, please.
    IRS: prove it!
    Taxpayer: Tesla!
Tesla: hang on, ... , here's the proof
    Taxpayer: see!
    IRS: oh, alright then.

The IRS doesn't have to determine anything.

Hfh, make sure that your car hasn't already been finished. A quick call to Tesla let me know that my VIN 3094 was already built and sent to a Tesla delivery Hub. They were just waiting for my final payment to have it ship from the HUB. Once that payment came in yesterday afternoon and paid for the car this morning- they noted that they can now delivery it. He told me to expect the car later this week or early next week. Therefore, technically, its on a truck I guess.

LOL, forget my earlier suggestion, this way works just as well!

My DS actually sent me a scan off the bill of lading, showing I was loaded on the truck Dec 19th. My bank wire was completed on Dec 22. The Title paperwork Tesla sent indicates the vehicle was first placed in service on Dec 26th. I hope to transfer title on Dec 31...and who knows when the car will actually arrive!

Unfortunately, my DS emailed me: "Sorry but we cant count it as sold until we hand it off to the transport company, and the car wont be finished in 2012."

Oh, well. Maybe I'll get lucky and the EV deduction will go up to $10k.

Just got an email (well, 2 days ago but didn't see it), that my Model S was nearly done in production and will be ready for delivery as soon as tomorrow. Currently out of town but am considering flying to Fremont to pick it up this upcoming week and to drive it home, rather than wait for shipping. I am #9935 and wasn't expecting delivery until February or March. What a pleasant surprise!

Did you ever get the email asking if you wanted your car by December?
  • Dec 30, 2012
    logan
I received my Pre-Delivery Vehicle Purchase Agreement on Dec 4th, and signed it back on the 7th. I received an email on Dec 28th saying my vehicle was nearly done, and could be shipped out the 31st if I signed all the paperwork, had it sent back via Fedex overnight, and wrote a check or wired the remaining cost of the vehicle. This would give me a delivery to my CA address on or around Jan 1st. So I don't think I got that email, unless this is what you are referring to.

I just checked My Dashboard over at Tesla Motors and have the Delivery button. I have a date range of January 15-29. Yahoo!
  • Dec 30, 2012
    strider
The tax credit is based on when car is "placed into service" so that's when you receive it, not when Tesla ships it. That being said the final MVPA would have the shipping date on it and that's what my accountant wanted to see as proof for the credit but YMMV.

Because of @David-EL's post, I checked and also had the Delivery button!

Delivery date range of January 28-February 11

60 kWH supercharging, grey/grey/piano black/body color roof, air, sound, tech.

In the factory pickup confirmation email that I got, just my name was listed under the Vehicle Registration heading although I provided my wife's name as well when answering the online delivery questionnaire (and both names showed up in the final screen)...

Did anyone have this issue before? Should I bother [emailprotected] with an email?

Yeah, it sounds like you never got that December email I was referring to. I recently upgraded my battery pack to 85kWh. ~Dec12 the new pre-MVPA was signed by Tesla. If only I could've upgraded a little sooner. Oh well. I can save up some more while I wait. Congrats on the good news.

Glad I was reading the forums tonight. Checked My Tesla / Dashboard and have a delivery estimate of Jan 23 - Feb 6. I'm #11,182 so I'm pretty stoked to be getting a delivery date. Actually a little sooner than I would like because I still need to have my 240 installed and was hoping to have my PV system in place beforehand as well. But I'll take the early delivery date.

Happened to be checking teslamotors.com for a fact about the car, and as usual, the default page to load is /mytesla. For some reason, there is now a red "Delivery" button on that page, but when I click it, the page seems to redirect to another page, but then just ends up reloading the /mytesla page. I thought I went thru this process already because I was part of the "December Push" and was given a window of the 15-31. What's this button supposed to do, or is this just a bug on the website?

    Having trouble with the math?

Maybe this has been asked, but I have been following this thread for about a month and....

i noticed that there seems to be a big jump in sequence numbers from people below 3000 to people above 10,000 that are now getting delivery windows.

Did that many people drop off?
Are there really that many wanting 40kw bat?

For a company that built 3000 this year and on track for about 1800 in Jan. It seem odd that people with seq#10,000+ are getting delivery windows of first week of Feb.

    How does this really work?
  • Dec 31, 2012
    Cattledog
Well, not sure where you got that 1,800 number for January, but if true that's a lot of it. I'd guess:

    1. Some percentage due to cancellations or transfer of deposit to Model X.
    2. Some percentage due to prioritizing 85 KWh.
    3. Some percentage due to air suspension.
    4. Some percentage due to people responding 'no' when asked if they wanted to to move up their delivery during the December push.
    5. Some percentage due to increased capacity of two (or three?) shifts, 7 days a week.
    6. And other stuff...

That proposal only applies to cars <$45K. It will not affect any Model S's. I.e., Leafs and Volts get it, Teslas don't.

Wow, great news for someone so close to a P10,000 reservation #. Is it me, or do we seem to have more San Diego folks active here/buying Model S's than those in LA? I know we can't catch the bay area, but it should good SoCal competition.

Did that, button still there. Redirecting to https://www.teslamotors.com/delivery?rn=RN30XXXX&source=dashboard, then auto-redirecting back to /mytesla.

I'll give the west coast a chance to finish their coffee, and then I'll shoot off an email to Tesla.

Just talked to my DS who said my car was complete and waiting for "delivery" (aka pickup by a shipping company). He also mentioned the reason that it's likely not already on a truck is that they're waiting for a few more east coasters to jump on before heading out.

Well, my delivery window of 12/15-12/31 has now come and gone. I still have not even been given a VIN. Nobody at Tesla is able to provide any information (including my DS). The My Tesla page has shown my car in production for over 3 weeks, but my DS states that production has yet to begin. He doesn't know when it will. Reservation holders greater than 3500 spots below mine have gotten their VIN. Emails, phone calls, etc. and no concrete information in response. "We're a new/small company...please be patient." That worked for me for a couple of weeks. Now it's becoming a tired excuse.

    Extremely frustrated. Any suggestions?!

Saw my delivery button today as well. I'm not sure exactly when it first appeared since there was no related email. Tesla should fix this lack of notification, since they've trained us all to look for emails, although I suspect its appearance was pretty recent. For those anticipating their "button", from my experience (East Coast P85) it looks like it's under two weeks from signed paperwork to the delivery button, and 4-6 weeks from that to delivery (my window is January 30th-February 13th).

Great news indeed! And yep, I've noticed that. Tons of San Diego people! Quite the opposite of the other car forums I belong to (MBWorld and Challengertalk), where most of the SoCal people are in LA rather than SD.

Just to be safe as far as all the incentives go, I am finishing up the paperwork and wiring the money today so it will be counted as a 2012 purchase. Unfortunately, to do this I can't pick it up after Jan 1st (need to fly to Fremont), so the car will be delivered to me. In order for them to record it as a 2012 sale, they must have the paperwork, money, and car loaded on a truck.

Only delivery range I have is the Pre-MVPA Feb-Mar range. The people I've been talking to are sticking to that for now. My guess is in a week or two I've get a more specific range based on the talks here. I'd really like to lock in a financing rate and I'm hesistant to do that without a more concrete range. Hopefully the whole fiscal cliff stuff doesn't ruin the good rates I'm seeing.

From the time they told me my car was ready to the time it arrived at the service center in Queens was almost two weeks. It was then delivered that week. But I'm guessing things took a bit longer because of the holidays. Where in NY are you?

Despite our car leaving the factory on 12/21, 10 days was apparently not enough time to travel 800 miles, so count us as yet another missed delivery window by Tesla. As best I can tell the car has been sitting in Portland for about 5 days. Would have been much quicker to just drive down and get it ourselves. Have not had any updates from Tesla since Friday, and my request for a status from our store today has gone unanswered. Assuming the car will likely show up later this week. We're still WAY ahead of when we expected to be getting the car, but let's hope they get this worked out in 2013.

Interesting 48 hours - found out my car was ahead of schedule for delivery and that it could still got on the truck in 2012 if I scrambled to make sure PenFed could confirm my loan. Was assigned VIN 3277. Reservation sequence number #6366. Performance, grey exterior, black interior, pano, carbon fiber, and all the other options except for third row seats. Delivery specialist confirmed the car was done today and loaded on the truck for delivery. What is most fascinating however is that it appears I got a model year 2013 VIN with the letter "D" rather than "C".

I'm in a similar boat. My car is also stuck in Portland. I live in Eugene so my car literally drove by me on the way there. My understanding is that the union controlling the drivers who deliver from the hub has decided that they're not delivering until 1/2. Apparently this lockdown began on Saturday. I've been told that I might see my car on Thursday or Friday but there's not guarantee because they can't even contact the delivery people to set up a schedule. I spoke with my DS today (even though he's technically off work, he called from his cell phone) and they're pretty frustrated/pissed by the whole thing, too.
