Omgoodness that is beautiful! Pics are amazing. Wheels perfectwith the color. And I'll take the house with the car, thank you. That car is worth a cardiac catheterization.
    Huge congrats Teslaguy!
But has your Model S yet had a 11 year old friend's kid jump on the hood? Such was the maiden voyage after the prompt 9am Horeseless Carriage delivery of Model S P01845 this morning. Have already gotten my moneys worth from thepaint armor
Appreciate EdA's attendance and shotgun for first ride. Ben I needed you. We listened to AM radio I think.
All great. Folks this car is crazy nice. Off to work today for me. Pics and full story including live photos of lynching of friend's son to come when I have a little more of a moment.

DS comes later today. Maybe FM radio then?

Yikes!! I think I would have gone just a little ballistic if my grandson's "friend" jumped on the hood! Can't even imagine!
By the way, I read somewhere on one of the threads here or at TMC about the car seeming to go faster after the V4 upgrade.
I drove my new car yesterday afternoon and then scheduled the V4 upgrade for overnight.
Took a little ride this am and almost lost it!! I kid you not it feels like this thing is twice the rocket after that upgrade!!
Really strange but others noticed it as well.

I also had a bit of a scare in a parking lot yesterday.
On 3 occasions the car dinged at me and shut completely down!!
I lost all power assist to steering and brakes and was coasting downhill struggling like heck to get it under control!
Finally noticed a little red icon on top bar and touched it and it said somethiing like don't put foot on brake and accelerator at the same time.
It was dark, but I looked down at my right foot.
it was clearly on the brake. But maybe the right edge touched the accelerator when I pushed the brake down?
I don't know. However, it seems like a major safety hazard to have the car shut down and to lose all power assist when that happens.
I can see disabling the accelerator under that condition, but to lose it all is pretty bad!
It was just like driving along and having an ICE car totally stall and losing everything.

Jim, glad you're not operating on me today! How can you POSSIBLY keep your mind on anything else!!
    ;-)

The little terror was considerate enough to keep it to the paint armor. It was fun Jim, thanks for inviting me up...

I'd have skipped the paint armor and gone for presenting a bill to the kid's parents. Much more satisfying, especially with the possibility the little **** would have had a much less merry Christmas.

PS Congratulations on the new car.

There are new regulations as a result of that police officer and his family dying in a Toyota from unintended acceleration a few years ago. I haven't researched it, but it seems at least possible that the government mandated a complete shutdown under those conditions, and its just something new for 2013. Or it could just be some hinky Model S bug from 4.0 :)
  • Dec 17, 2012
    teslasguy
A complete shutdown just seems crazy dangerous. Makes complete sense to temporarily disable the accelerator, but shutting off all power assist to brakes and steering just seems very dangerous to me.
My foot was clearly on the brake, but as I said the right edge might have brushed the accelerator as I depressed the brake pedal. I drive with one foot, even though in my racing days I used to use both feet when autocrossing my Corvette Z06.

I'm told the car is entering the final stage of production and will be done in 7-10 days. Then it will take a few days to ship to me. My hope is that, even on the outside, I'll have it before 2013!

Called today to see if they have a VIN yet... I need it so my utility company can install my elec service (part of an initiative that includes two years of free night-time charging).

First of all, the phone number I called off of Tesla's website was answered by a honest-to-goodness flesh and blood human being after about four rings. He didn't even have to transfer my call, he was able to help me right then and there. Total call lasted less than two minutes.

Unfortunately, the gentleman I spoke to informed me that it didn't look like my car has even entered production yet. He did tell me that I should call often, and gave me a different number to call, so I'll try again tomorrow.

I am now more solid in my skepticism that my car will be delivered before December 31st.

Just wondering if anyone else in Texas is expecting delivery in the next day or so? We haven't heard from the truck yet...
  • Dec 17, 2012
    Todd Burch
PattyChuck, I give your car little to no chance of arriving by Jan 1.

My delivery window is Dec. 7-21. Here we are, four days from the end of my window and my car is still sitting in the factory, awaiting payment. (Seriously, they're holding it for me to make payment?!? I wired the money to them in full this morning, and my DS told me that the payment date would not delay delivery). I was asked to wire money Friday evening. That's hard to do when the banks are closed.

This whole delivery experience with Tesla has been aggravating. I'm trying to be patient and tolerant, but how much time do they need to get some simple communication straight?

Meanwhile I'm seeing P3800+ folks on the east coast getting delivery dates. All I can see is my gray 85 sitting in the corner of the factory, in a dark shadow at 8% SOC gathering dust. Frustrating.

Not happy. Tesla, step up your game.

I just got a phone call and email mail saying my car is in the "final stages of manufacturing and will be ready for delivery by the end of the year". No VIN yet though... Tesla asked for a copy of my drivers license and insurance so they could do the final paperwork and schedule delivery (I'm doing factory pickup).

    Finger's crossed for a pre-New Year pickup!

How can you get car insurance without a VIN #?
  • Dec 17, 2012
    Todd Burch
You just need proof of existing insurance.
  • Dec 17, 2012
    napabill
Exactly. When I picked up my S my insurance company told me I was bound to the existing coverage for 4 days. All Tesla needed from me when I signed the paperwork and picked up the car, was a signature on a form stating I had insurance.
  • Dec 17, 2012
    Brian H
Sorry! I don't entirely understand that red banner, so haven't been looking at it!! I see the # now, of course. (And the 'Pls' is truly intended to acknowledge politely that it's private info, if anyone's at all sensitive about it. TMC members are of course a small and rapidly shrinking sample % of the total reservations, so all data is rare and precious.)

Comprehending what's happening in the deliveries is really tough while TM is cranking right now! I hope reservers don't get too lost in the scramble. But it's sure fascinating to watch the process. TM's critical path meetings must really be something!

    PattyChuck
    Todd, that's a royal bummer!

Based on a conversation with TeslaHQ today (which again, I reiterate, was an excellent experience and followed up with two after-hours emails), I am not optimistic that my car is coming this year. If it doesn't make it on a truck by Christmas, I don't see it happening.
  • Dec 17, 2012
    Lyon
Well I've basically been told that I won't actually be driving my car until after New Year's but that the technical delivery takes place when they load the car on the truck at the factory. It's the same way they get away with delivering cars to Texas.

So are they going to waive the stupid $180 final prep fee since they are not detailing the car before it's dropped off to you?
  • Dec 17, 2012
    ckessel
Got a call from Tesla Sunday asking if I was ready. Yay! Said I was, I thought he said I'd get paperwork today, but no papers. Also said they put it on the truck after payment, but I thought that was only for problem states like Texas (I'm in Oregon). So, probably after Xmas sometime given I don't foresee money wired until Wednesday at best.
Direct ship. No DS. No real prep or "delivery experience". Not a big deal, since like many of us I'm already quite up on things.
  • Dec 17, 2012
    Lyon
They're doing that for all the cars that they're trying to get in under the wire (the end of 2012) because they'll be delivering the car when they take your money and put it on the truck it's a 2012 delivery. You get the tax rebate for 2012 and they get to count it as a 2012 delivery.

They're shipping mine the same way... hell, they might even use the same truck! If that's the case, I'll try to make his stop in Eugene as short as possible. ;)

Just as a data point: As one of the higher P numbers (8946) and part of the do you want your Tesla early email I was told from jump street that my car would not be delivered prior to 2013 and I was quoted 1st or 2nd week of January. The goal was to get my car to a 3rd party agent and pay for the car prior to the end of 2012 so I could reap the tax benefits.

I was never holding my breath for a 2012 delivery for my Model S. It would be GREAT but wasn't expected.
  • Dec 18, 2012
    montgom626
Your number is 8946 and you might get it in JAN 2013. So, how do they get to such a high number so quickly??? I did not know they had were so far along in production. When would a car with number 15000+ be built?
  • Dec 18, 2012
    gregincal
Hard to say. The reason they got to such a high number quickly is by skipping all 40 and 60 pack configurations, as well as anybody that chose red or standard suspension. However, they will have to go back and build all of those lower numbered cars before they get to a car as high at 15000, plus they will probably be building european cars by then. It all depends on what their production rate will be in 2013.
  • Dec 18, 2012
    Jcmason
@gregincal - I agree with your logic. I'm P9096, blue 85 with air suspension, but just barely missed out on the "Do you want it in December" mail. I spoke with a Tesla product specialist yesterday, and his guess was it would be sometime in Feb for me.
  • Dec 18, 2012

Well a lot the air suspension 85kWh people with a signed MVPA got a email December 6th asking if we wanted December delivery. I am 7701 and was told my car is most likely shipping next week.

I actually worked 16hours, installed my NEMA 14-50 outlet from scratch, cleaned (cleared all my faults, cleared my service interval) my car, and sold it all this weekend. I should have my financing finalized today pending a VIN, which I was told would get to me today or tomorrow. Most productive two days I have had since joining TMC!

I am borrowing my friends 1996? Dodge Dakota till I get my S. So when I get it it should feel small, fast, and nimble.

Pulling the 85kWh Air suspension cars up is/was a temporary thing until they begin general production of 40 and 60's standard suspension, once that begins, you should assume that you'll be in line with all the other reservations no matter what your configuration is.

Called Tesla again today (yes, I'm badgering them).

They said my car is going on the truck for shipment tonight or tomorrow. Through a second contact at Tesla it seems like they really were holding my car waiting for my payment, although that is contrary to what my DS said.

I'd suggest this to you: If you're trying to get the car ASAP, when you hear from your DS ask if you can send payment as soon as possible so as not to delay delivery.

Glad that it *sounds* like my car is starting to come to papa, but a bit down that it appears to have sat in Fremont for a few days for no reason.

Another thing to add: the inside delivery specialist I talked to said that he thinks Tesla's got just about every semi on the west coast lined up at the factory picking up cars :).

We'd originally requested Seattle Service Center delivery thinking it would get us the car earlier, but they're now telling us that a direct ship to our house will expedite the process.

5,158, reserved sept 2011. Returned mvpa within 2 hours of receipt end of August. Was scheduled for Nov/dec delivery. Then received "fast delivery" email Dec 6, responded yes within 1 hour of receipt.
Just spoke with DS who informed me that they have changed manufacturing order again and that I did not make it into the big group of VINs released yesterday. Looking very unlikely that I will get the car (shipped not received) by 12/31. Real bummer, arranged taxes for $7,500 credit in 2012, bought winter wheels and tires, started penfed loan, and notified insurance.
Car is performance, green/tan/CF, 21" silver wheels, all options but rear seats.
    Westchester NY for delivery.

I'm also waiting and wondering what is up.
Was told car had been released to Sales for delivery 8 days ago,

I keep asking, but as far as I have been told, it is still sitting in Cali.
Tomorrow is the fourth day of my window!

Not having been provided an explanation or time when car will ship is really stressing my holiday season. Everything begins when the car arrives, and I still have no real idea when that will actually be. Keep distracting myself, try not to obsess, but Crikey!

I just got this from my product specialist:

"Good news! Your payment is in and your car left 12/14 at 8pm. You should get a call 48 hours before the car is supposed to arrive. It usually takes 5-7 days to get to TX from Fremont but may be longer depending on where the truck is stopping before hand."

They're pushing as hard as they to deliver as many cars as they can before the end of the year. There's no way they're taking an entire week off.

And yes, I got to meet Elon on the factory tour, too. And George and JB. Awesome!

Have to say too that everyone was really nice. And a big thank you to my DS (John Scalmanini) for setting it up! Never thought I'd ever get to meet Elon, George or JB!

I feel your pain - i am thinking that it's our location that is hindering delivery more than our res# or config; i'm across the river from you in Rockland, #5652, similar config and same schedule.

Yes, it's beginning to feel like everyone within a state or two of California is getting their cars regardless of reservation number, and the rest of us suckers are forced to wait. <Pouty childish voice>Not fair.</Pouty childish voice>

Talked with a few different folks as I've been working through the process of getting a VIN, paperwork, etc. They all sound exhausted. Upbeat, happy Tesla is shipping I think, but just worn out. As much as I want everyone (including me) to get their cars, now that Tesla has hit their critical 20k/year run rate, my sympathies lean towards them all getting some real time off around the holidays to recharge as I think that's healthier in the long term.

P4201, VIN 2443 - delivered Monday 12/17: great car! Everything positive has been mentioned many times, and it's all true.
My rear hatch lacks power, my navigation doesn't work, dome lights have a life of their own, GPS keeps getting locked up, picture of car on the screen is red but my car is black: Delivery Specialist couldn't figure out why.. I just realized that they loaded the non-tech software on my tech-optioned car.. really lame... called in to TESLA this morning - this will be a check of their customer service and "service recovery" - will post follow up as it happens.

Yes, the Tesla folks are worn out: all the folks talking and complaining about all the deliveries they have to do and all cars that are being sent to them (daily deliveries).. it's great as long as quality control is intact... Well, let's see how well they recover from this owner's delivery experience thus far.

P4909 just received VIN 2570. Still targeting delivery between 12/28-12/31 in LA, however Tesla requested that it be direct shipped to my home by a third-party carrier instead of the originally scheduled pickup at the Santa Monica service center in order to ensure delivery by year end. I was informed that I will receive an email with some basic vehicle instructions followed by an instructional video, with personalized followup from a Delivery Specialist to be scheduled at a later date.

The only item to be listed on the due bill will be the parcel shelf, so apparently the front mats, visors and cubby shelf installed in the car are the final versions. I am also likely to trade-in my 2011 535i with AutoNation since the offer was surprisingly comparable to Carmax, but Tesla is still figuring out the logistics since my current car would not be picked up by the third-party shipper. More details to follow...

OK, I got an email indicating my car is on a truck and rolling!
    Quite a relief!
At least it is on the way now, and I have an estimate of roughly middle of next week.
    Drive carefully!

Talked to a rep today that said they were trying to push out lots of the CA cars because they have a tax break that is about to expire. Even with that info I was told my car, VIN 3062, would be delivered to NC 'very, very near the 31st'.

    Looks like you beat me.

I called again today. Despite being promised that my car would be on a truck no later than this afternoon, it's still not going anywhere. It's been sitting there, complete and waiting for a truck for almost a week now. Received more incorrect information from Tesla. I'm tired of calling. My delivery window ends in 2 days.

Part of the problem is that the Inside Delivery team is in Deer Creek. The factory, last I checked, is in Fremont. Therefore, the ID team doesn't have visibility on cars. Crazy.

I am really upset with Tesla. Delivering cars in the P6000-P8000 range is just a complete shot in the face--Tesla has shown that they don't give a squat about reservation numbers. California deliveries have preference, regardless of reservation date? That's BS. It's like watching people cut you in line when you've been standing there a year longer. Completely disrespectful. I don't care about quarterly numbers or the current price of stock. That stuff's just temporary. To treat your customers this way is just terrible.

I used to be a huge Tesla cheerleader. Almost all of that enthusiasm is gone. It's hard to believe that they've so completely botched this delivery stuff. They certainly had plenty of time to prepare.

Sorry to be bitching, but this is just so damn frustrating. :cursing:

I'm sure it will (mostly) disappear when the car comes, but Tesla is *definitely* getting off on the wrong foot with me.

Tesla had called Sunday and said I'd get paperwork Monday. No paperwork Monday. Or Tuesday. Called Wednesday morning and talked to an inside delivery guy and he said he'd "give it a nudge". Which worked, I now have my paperwork signed and back to Tesla who signed. Now waiting for a call. My bank is ready to disburse funds having been given the updated paperwork so I need to talk to them tomorrow.

On one hand, it's good to have made it to the next steps. On the other, the nudge seems ultimately counter productive. It takes time for them to field the call and push mine forward, time that could be spent working through all the paperwork. Things aren't ever going to slow down from here on out for Tesla and the process they have clearly doesn't run very smoothly.

Like Todd, my enthusiasm has turned jaded. More sad than upset in my case. I mostly just want to get it done at this point and pray my car doesn't have the gremlins that came with gaswalla's.

You have every right to be upset and almost anyone would be with such a large discrepancy in sequence number and car delivered. I understand some of the batching and local deliveries but every attempt should have been made to get people their car under a certain number (2,500 sequence number as a made up example) and then work up from there. Sounds like it's just a matter of getting the car onto a truck so at least it is not sitting in limbo in the factory but doesn't make it any better since you don't have the car yet of course. Hope they pull through by next week for you.

Anyone have a sense of the average time it's taking from VIN to 'on the truck'? I received my VIN two days ago and am still pessimistic about car getting loaded onto a truck in the next 12 days.

As a data point, I've had my VIN for over 3 weeks now. I expect the car in another 10 days--direct delivery. So my experience is showing about 33 days to the east coast. I am (hopefully) not typical.

I'm in the same boat. I've been waiting for my final paperwork since Friday. My DS says he's following up on it each day, but that HQ doesn't have any firm date on when they'll get the final paperwork complete. He said they're spin up some folks in DC to help handle the paperwork, and that it might hopefully come tomorrow. It's hard to imagine the paperwork takes that much time to complete...how different can it all be from the preliminary paperwork done back in September...anyway, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Ironically, my DS emailed me to (very apologetically) cancel my pickup this weekend and postpone to a future date, to be determined. Seems my vehicle is not quite ready. I'm still hoping to have it by the end of the year. I think my choice of a solid roof (never cared much for sunroofs), may be affecting the delivery date, as we are only a few VIN numbers apart.

I got my final MVPA docs signed tonight, which had my VIN and 95 miles on the car!! I guess that mean she's alive rolling around quite a bit in Fremont .

How soon (or how long) after receiving the final MVPA is delivery scheduled?

What's the turnaround time from when the DS submits the paperwork to when you get the final MVPA? I'm waiting for mine and need it pretty soon so my credit union can cut me my loan check before I pickup Sunday. I'm in the opposite situation :) - pickup scheduled, but waiting final paperwork!

I was trying to be patient. Now I'm very frustrated. I was given a delivery window of 12/15-12/31 and have been waiting for my VIN to finalize financing with PenFed and ready myself for payment to Tesla. I was notified by my DS today that not only would I not receive my car this month, it hasn't started production and won't until January. What the heck is up with that?!? I can understand being slightly behind the delivery window. I don't understand how they can be that far off on the production end. Under promise and over deliver...not vice versa!
  • Dec 19, 2012

I'm pretty sure they put 95 miles on everyone's MVPA.

Time to schedule delivery after final MVPA varies. Could be several weeks.

That sucks. I said it before and I'll say it again. Tesla, you are hugely damaging your customer's goodwill by doing this. Sacrificing long term customer satisfaction for the benefit of a temporary stock price is beyond foolish. A rare strategic mistake on Elon's part, IMHO.

    PureAmps
At great risk of going off topic, I will choose to respond.

First, let me say I understand your frustration and would feel the same in your shoes. As with the signature models, they are building and delivering production cars out of order for a variety of reasons, most of which we will probably never know.

However, to say that they are doing this to optimize the stock price I think is missing the bigger picture. Tesla is not only a public company but also has enormous capital requirements to design and build out manufacturing capacity for the Model X and their Gen III platform. Producing vehicles that sit on the lot unsold because they are not able to be delivered hurts the company tremendously, and not just for the short term. Less cash inflow this quarter means possibly delaying these programs, further eroding confidence in the company, not just by investors but by future customers. As a customer, I would like Tesla to be around 10 years from now so I can continue to get parts and service. So I'm happy that they have made the right business decision and chose to maximize their cash flow this quarter.

But as the unexpected beneficiary of the ability to "cut in line", all I can say to Tesla is "please, take my money"! :)

Ah figures.. either case, it's getting closer. I know people here are frustrated, it's all about perspective. I see/read all the articles on Newton, CT and in perspective, I have a WHOLE lot be thankful for. Getting the car this year vs next year is nothing compared to what others are dealing with this holiday season.

My DS reports that my P1312/vin2530 has "finished production and is being fast tracked for shipment." Tesla now has the funds and paperwork. I gotta wonder when it will make it to Arizona for a direct delivery. My 40 months of water torture may be close to an end.

I feel especially bad for the 60kWh people who had every reason to believe that the mid-size battery car would commence delivery in November. I understand that there were reasons for the change, but integrity should matter! The lack of an explanation is disappointing in the extreme.

Todd. I know your pain/sadness/frustration. I was in the running for the final Sig when P's in the thousands were receiving cars before me for a while and some of my old posts show a similar level of frustration. The missed delivery windows and broken communications were not good for my overall opinion of operations at Tesla. The good news is that your delivery will be soon, and the car will likely be amazing.

What's this about a tax break about to expire? I thought the $2500 was well funded through June 2013?

I would be especially incensed if Tesla, by pushing out thousands of 85kWh cars out of sequence, caused the funds to dry up and deny me (and other early 60kWh and 40kWh reservations) the rebate!

Maybe your car failed inspection and was scrapped. It's happened to a few people.
