GDH Ook I have a n00b question.
I want a 40 S, when I paid my 5K it did not ask what car I wanted they just simply took the 5K. The 40's are starting production in March and my reservation number is right below 15K......if Tesla contacts me after march and the production of the 40's is over do I have to wait until the next round goes into production?....not really getting how this works.
Thanks.
Dec 31, 2012
PattyChuck Got an email from Tesla this evening, man they're working the heck out of those guys. Basically, the Delivery button reappearing is just a glitch in the matrix.
Dec 31, 2012
rlpm I haven't seen anything that says 40kWh will only be produced in small batches for short periods of time. I think the assumption is that once they start production, they won't stop. Though how many 40kWh will be produced out of the total production per week is unknown. With a reservation number below 15K, you'll very likely be contacted before 40kWh production starts in March.
Of course, that's no guarantee of how long you'll have to wait after finalizing/signing.

Todd Burch Truck driver arrived right at 3:30 today...right on time!
Had a BLAST driving it today and burning electrons. Will post a detailed writeup soon...but in short, loving it!

Dec 31, 2012
GDH So basically when my number is up they will build what ever car with whatever battery I want?
Dec 31, 2012
rlpm I think that's ideally what's supposed to happen -- parts shortages, acts of nature, etc. notwithstanding, yadda, yadda.
Disclaimer: I don't work for Tesla, nor do i have any insight into their production, factory, etc., so take what I say with a frunk-ful of salt.

Brian H With the robotized lines they can supposedly mix and match pretty much any cars. But supply/feeder lines get complex. They seem to be getting more "flexible" as time goes on, though.

assap6 P5608 VIN2592 was delivered on 12/31 in Seattle.
Grey performance, pano roof, 21" silver wheels, black leather, piano black interior, 27 miles on odometer & 176 miles of charge at delivery. No tech or sound packages. Due bill - parcel shelf & detail. The car arrived via direct ship in an ok but not pristine condition (minor dust / debris on the exterior and interior). The detail was added to the due bill by Tesla without my asking or even hinting that I would appreciate having it in exceptional condition!
The car is amazing, everything I hoped it would be and then someThank you Tesla!!!

Jan 2, 2013
JakeP P4996 with VIN 2547 is still sitting in NJ, where it arrived on Monday. It is hopefully being detailed and charged, though final delivery to me in PA hasn't even been scheduled yet. Two holidays and a winter storm apparently account for the fourteen-days-and-counting delivery duration since the Bill of Lading was issued on Dec 19th.
The UPS Autogistics folks were very helpful in finding the current location of the car, and will be calling me back with the shipper delivery info once that gets scheduled (hopefully today). Fortunately my DS was able to provide me with the Bill of Lading, which had the UPS Autogistics order and contact information (though they can find your car with the last six digits of the VIN).
Jan 2, 2013
nrcooled I just spoke to my DS and my car is also sitting in NJ right now. I just want to drive up and go get it right now and test out the Supercharger in Deleware on the way home to Virginia! With that being said, my DS will be checking daily on the progress of the car and I let him know that as soon as the car is avaiable I will be avaiable for delivery.
This is getting really exciting!

kinddog was just told by my DS to forget the first delivery window of Dec 15-31.
my new delivery window is January 29 - February 12.
yay. now instead of being jazzed that I will get the car way sooner than my original "April-May" window, I'm sitting here bummed out that I'll get it a month after they first told me I would have it.
Tesla seriously needs to learn the most basic of sales and customer service mantras... UNDER-promise and OVER-deliver. it really seems like they intentionally do the opposite, creating needless frustration and dashed expectations. all completely avoidable! bizarre.
Jan 2, 2013
lolachampcar kinddog,
I got the same from my PS although my DS seems to think my car is in the next batch of ViNs to be released.
It is strange way to treat those that got thier finances in order so that the money was there for a Q4 delivery.

jpeterman How did you get a hold of Autogistics? I can never get them to answer their phone. My car has been sitting in Detroit for two weeks.
Jan 2, 2013
lolachampcar I am going to stir the pot here but I just have to ask the retorical question -
Do you think a car would be allowed to sit somewhere if Tesla could not (had not) book(ed) the revenue in Q4?
Jan 2, 2013
Lyon Just off the phone with my supernaturally patient DS, Garrett, and, apparently, the UPS system has populated a delivery date of tomorrow (1/3) even though I've not gotten a call from the driver. I'm crossing my fingers and trying not to stare at my phone.
Jan 2, 2013
JakeP I called them at the number on my Bill of Lading...866 435-2281. They answered both times I called today, and all they need is the last six of your VIN. My car is still sitting in NJ, no shipment scheduled.
All I can say is that car had better be beautifully detailed and fully charged when it arrives, or else...I guess, or else nothing, since I paid in full two weeks ago, and Tesla got their 2012 Q4 revenue.
Jan 2, 2013
KKlabunde Is there something odd about 85kwh? I didn't think the others were even available yet. Anyway, sequence may be weird because I sat on my invitation to finalize for 4 months. Didn't finalize until 12/17.

Darmok A lot of 60s got delivery buttons and windows in the past few days, so possibly yours just stood out as odd being an 85. I guess it shows that TM isn't abandoning 85s to work on 60s, but rather producing them at once. As one would expect.

Also learned the Philadelphia service location (Norristown, PA near King of Prussia) will be open in the next couple weeks (or perhaps is already?) at least to accommodate deliveries out of that location.

Nikoli This phone number is golden. Just got some info on the cars sitting at the Romulus, MI location (Detroit). Tesla released all the vehicles at this location yesterday and they are being prepped for delivery. Prepping could take a couple days and my delivery could be sometime early next week. So I'm looking at a total delivery duration of ~17 days since the car left Fremont on 12/22. Pretty sad compared to what others are reporting.
Why in the world did Tesla just release them YESTERDAY?!? My car has been there since at least Sunday 12/29 since that's when they wanted to deliver it but couldn't due to the weather.
Jan 3, 2013
Electric Machete That number worked beautifully. I found out in literally less than one minute what I have been trying to get from my DS for over a week. Car is in Jacksonville, FL and is being charged and detailed and should be delivered early next week. They couldn't tell me how long it has been there though.
Jan 3, 2013
adurstewitz Wow - that number worked great! Best detailed information to date!
They said that my car is being washed and detailed and will be delivered by Tuesday, but that Monday is very likely.
Jan 3, 2013
Electric Machete I spoke with my delivery specialist who said he wasn't aware of that number. So pass it on when you communicate with them.
Jan 3, 2013
Lyon Every time I try to call that number I get put on hold until it goes to some random voicemail box.
Jan 3, 2013
adurstewitz I had to try several times to get through.
Jan 3, 2013
JakeP I think we are all bombarding that number, it has been very difficult to get through on today. I also was told that Tesla released my car for final delivery from NJ to PA yesterday, but that I wouldn't get the car until sometime next week, since they had to now detail and charge the car. I pointed out that Tesla had likely detailed and charged the car between Monday and yesterday, and now they only needed to put it on a truck to me in Pittsburgh. I asked if perhaps my car was waiting for a truck to get a full load of Westbound vehicles, and he said he would call me back with more info. Next week will be 20+ days delivery time since I was loaded on a truck in Fremont on Dec 19.
- - - Updated - - -
I provided all this info to my DS, and he said he couldn't apologize enough, and said it was going straight to the management team, as sadly I was not the only one experiencing delays and frustrations, where the car is seemingly stagnant for days on end. I fear this may be the result of hub-and-spoke delivery logistics, coupled with bad weather and two holidays. But hopefully it is something that can be improved upon. I know I lost a few days when the driver went home for Christmas and avoided a major storm...fully understandable. But to lose another week and a half when my car is seven hours away, and passed by my house to get there?
Jan 3, 2013
EdA My car is 3 hours away - without traffic...
Jan 3, 2013
W8MM Maybe our cars are on the same truck? We're in Cincinnati, too. I've been told lots of things similar to what you've been told and expect (not really) our car to be delivered next Monday or Tuesday (maybe).

adurstewitz Sigh... Quote from my DS when I told him about me contacting UPS directly -
"...cars often take a day or two longer than originally planned."
I really hope not, I'm so tired of the constant dragging out of this process.
Jan 3, 2013
aerocristobal I passed it on to my DS this evening too and he wasn't aware of it. My delivery is tentatively scheduled for Monday, but he wasn't sure how to get confirmation, other than waiting for the driver to call him. Hopefully he'll be able to chase it down tomorrow.
I'm not sure why Tesla can't arm its staff with this information...
Jan 3, 2013
Cattledog Adam - Hang tight, you're good. It's a nearly perfect car trying to be delivered in an imperfect world - imagine how frustrated it feels. VIN 3143, in Arizona yesterday, on it way to San Antonio, got in the 2012 tax window, but the 2013 delivery window. Pretty sure the guy's going to call Tuesday morning as I drive to the airport to go out of town for three days. Hoping not!
Jan 3, 2013
Lyon So, after sitting in Portland for a week, I'm told my car will sit there until Sunday, at which point it'll be delivered to me (9:00am). Only problem is that Sunday is the only day this week I CANNOT be here as I already have tickets to a show in... Portland. The best part is that, on Monday, Garrett forwarded my availability for the week, including my unavailability on Sunday, to UPS.
My excellent DS, Garrett, is trying to get it pushed up to Saturday but I'm not holding out a lot of hope. Looks like it's going to be Monday. Yippie. Put me on the list of those whose initial excitement about the car has been worn down by a poor delivery experience. And, no, I don't blame Tesla for this one...
I am thoroughly unimpressed with UPS Autogistics.
Jan 4, 2013
Electric Machete Tesla made a choice to use UPS. Someone at Tesla made an unwise decision to relinquish control of their delivery to a third party.
Jan 4, 2013
lolachampcar Would it have been different if logistics held up booking revenue in Q4 instead of just holding up deliveries to customers?
Jan 4, 2013
EdA Apparently UPS has a monopoly in this area since acquiring FedEx's auto logistics business.
Tesla doesn't have much leverage trying to deliver a smattering of cars when there are hundreds of Toyotas and Fords and Hondas etc to move.
There is no incentive for UPS or the truckers to move Teslas at a faster rate when the trucks aren't filled.
Jan 4, 2013
JakeP I am pretty sure that is what I am facing right now...my car has been detailed and charged and released by Tesla for shipment out of the hub, but it may take another week after that to get to me (seven hours away), as I am likely waiting for a truck to fill up with other westbound deliveries.
Jan 4, 2013
nrcooled Yep! I called and they estimated a delivery date of Tuesday Jan 8th. I am very excited and they really need to pass this number to the DS so they can give owners good dates.
Jan 4, 2013
JakeP And of course I received that number from my DS (Tim), though perhaps unwittingly...he had forwarded me a scan of my Bill of Lading, which had that number on it.
- - - Updated - - -
As much as I agree with this sentiment, I think someone accurately stated months ago on this forum that delivery logistics need not be Tesla's core competency. This is perfectly true, provided that a third party can perform the delivery in a reasonable timeframe.
I also wonder if a 2-3 week delivery timeframe will become a complete non-issue, once the reservation backlog has been cleared and you can order a car and have it ready for shipping in three weeks...particularly if you are never promised a 7-10 day delivery timeframe.
Jan 4, 2013
dlmorgan999 For those of you who got your car via direct ship (no DS) can you tell me how you got the title and temporary registration? Does it get delivered with the car, or does Tesla mail it?
My car is scheduled for delivery today (woohoo!) but I haven't yet received anything in the mail. I would hate to get the car and not be able to drive it due to lack of temporary registration!
Jan 4, 2013
EdA I have a local DS, but once I paid, about a week later I received the title and temporary registration about a week later via FedEx.
Jan 4, 2013
nrcooled ^^^This. My DS has already sent the paperwork to me to transfer my plates from my old car to the Tesla and also sent the temp. registration. I don't think I will need the temp CA registration since I will just be throwing my old tags on the car.
Jan 4, 2013
ckessel Jared had the temporary tags when he delivered my car and applied it to the back windshield.
Jan 4, 2013
JakeP I received the title and temp registration packet via Fedex from Tesla, probably a week after payment. Rest assured, you will have *plenty* of time to transfer title and register in your home state before your vehicle arrives. *sigh*
Jan 4, 2013
dlmorgan999 I had forgotten about that. Hopefully someone from Washington Square will be there at my delivery.
Jan 4, 2013
Lyon Well whatever my DS did it worked. I got a call from the delivery company and the car is coming sometime this afternoon! They still can't tell me exactly when but sometime after 2. I really can't say enough about my DS, he's been fantastic.
Jan 4, 2013
EdA Lyon, whereabouts are you roughly?
Jan 4, 2013
JakeP I just received a call from DS Armen down in Houston, and he is going to do some "expediting" with UPS. Too late for delivery this weekend, but maybe I will see delivery on Monday instead of Thursday or Friday. Thank you Armen!
Jan 4, 2013
Matahari I tried numerous times to call the UPS Automotive Industry Solutions phone number but could never get someone to talk to. I then emailed "[emailprotected]", provided them my 6 digit VIN ("P0" then the last 4 digits of my VIN) and received a delivery date for my vehicle within the hour.
Jan 4, 2013
PattyChuck There seems to be a lull in reported VINs. Is it because I'm hyper-sensitive to it, knowing that I should be getting my VIN in the very near future, or is there really a lull?
Jan 4, 2013
kinddog def seems to be a lull. probably because they put out too many VINs at end of 2012 and are still trying to catch up with the backlog.

kinddog yea he spit that out, more of an estimate than an official delivery window. he said the delivery window would appear on the MYTESLA page tomorrow (that was 2 days ago), apparently unaware that nothing at all appears on that page except "We are currently building your Model S" and a trick button entitled "Delivery" which I'm pretty sure some prankster Tesla IT guy just put on there to see how many times breathless reservations holders would press it hoping something would happen...
Jan 4, 2013
Lyon Eugene, Oregon. The car is coming down from Portland, Or. I just got a call about 40 minutes ago that the car was just getting loaded on the truck and headed my way!
- - - Updated - - -
This is more of a hit piece because of his personal issues with Tesla's production ramp than an actual news-worthy item. Oh well, you know what they say about pissing of the guy who buys "ink" by the barrel...
Jan 4, 2013
Letrit 12/30 completed car. Tesla rep was unable to find out specifics about delivery (just like during production) except I was told that the car was shipped on 12/31. He was only able to make general predictions about delivery and was pretty poorly informed. I feel for the guy 'cause he doesn't seem to have any way to get information. I was able to reach UPS by leaving a message on the voicemail number seen in this thread. Got a call back from an extremely helpful guy who predicted this Sunday (1/6) delivery - then called a couple hours later to semi-confirm it. When questioned, he said the car was not going to be sent to a hub - just delivered to me. It was a breath of fresh air to talk to a capable guy who had resources at his disposal to allow him to inform the customer. In contrast, it made Tesla seem very unprepared for the volume. I guess we'll see on Sunday... Does anyone else think they might have a car on this (Northeast OH) load?
Jan 4, 2013
gg_got_a_tesla Don't know why but, the red Delivery button popped up again in My Garage (I went through that questionnaire already on 12/30) - it doesn't do anything except redirect to mytesla again. Weird.

Jan 5, 2013
dsmith2189 No I do not agree that it is a hit piece.
you must be in the Thrills category since you are getting your car. I am definitely annoyed after paying for my car 3 weeks ago and Tesla not being able to tell me where my car is. (not exactly true, They just haven't/won't responded to any of my status requests for the last week) to top that off they sent me my temp CA registration and Bill of Sale dated 2 Jan 2013 instead of when I actually paid for the car three weeks ago. So I don't have my car AND I get shafted for the 2012 tax rebate.
Jan 5, 2013
lolachampcar I few people have the Red Delivery Button for a second time including me. I've pressed the heck out of it checking my driveway each time. I've worn a circular path between my computer and the driveway and still no car. If I were smart, I'd set up a lawn chair and use my phone to press the button.
On the serious side, someone checked in with Tesla and was told it is a bug and that no further action is required on our part (assuming this is the second time you have the button).
Jan 5, 2013
seidste1 +1, same delivery button re-appeared on my page a week or so after going through the questions. The current button only serves to reload the same page.
Jan 5, 2013
EdA You've got to get that paperwork reconciled!!!

alluu Mine does that as well. Just thinking it is a glitch as I went through the delivery confirmation process already.
Jan 6, 2013
Cattledog P7006, VIN 3143 supposed to delivered tomorrow morning. Pins and needles!
Jan 6, 2013
ModelS8794 Interesting. I am VIN 3440 and am in the early stages of manufacturing. I wonder if that 25 car spread pinpoints the end of year production number, since the factory took a week off subsequent to year end. If yours was one of the last produced last year and mine was among the first produced in the new year, that would account for the wide difference in stage of readiness for 2 cars with close VINs.
Jan 6, 2013
Cattledog All the talk of transposed VINs between Atlanta and San Antonio whacked my eyes. I'm 3143! But I do believe the 2012s end in the 3160s or 3170s.
Jan 6, 2013
dsmith2189 My vin is 1200 ahead of yours (they can transpose my VIN all they want VIN 2222) and I don't even have a clue where my vehicle is or when it will be delivered. I give up...
Jan 7, 2013
Bucket22 I believe we've narrowed down the MY2012 to MY2013 turnover point as somewhere between VIN #3247 (2012) and #3278 (2013) in this thread: New ViNs lately? - Page 6
Jan 7, 2013
jhs_7645 Even more interesting, I'm VIN 3305, and have heard nothing yet, (they haven't gotten the paperwork to me!). Last I heard production on mine had just started, and I should plan on 10 days for them to get to the point where they would load it on a truck, two days transit, one day prep (best case), and another day deliver to my house. Could they be building VIN's out of order? Another scenario (shudder) is that something went wrong with my car and they had to go back and fix it.
Oh well.. I have a VIN... yay!
-- update --
oops, just noticed catteldog's VIN mistake. Now things make a bit more sense. Hey cattledog, you might want to go back and update the post upstream with the correct VIN.
Jan 7, 2013
brianman Just a quick opinion...
Given the out of order sequencing we've seen for vehicle completion and deliveries, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see a 2012 ("C") higher than #3278.
An easy example would be if, say, 3277 had to be scrapped and rebuilt like happened with at least one of the Sig vehicles; in that case I wouldn't be surprised to see them bump the C to a D if the timing of beginning of rebuild was in 2013.
Jan 7, 2013
Mike_Schlechter I'm at the NYC service center with my car today (getting a minor fix from my due bill). There are about a dozen cars here - mostly blacks and whites, but one blue. They are loading and delivering them in rapid succession. Very cool to see the prep and go in action!

- VIN in next two weeks
- likely production complete at end of January
- likely delivery mid-February
Can't say I'm not disappointed, but I'll persevere.

SteveH Very sorry to hear this Babylon. Any word on whether or not the delay was specific to your car for some reason or if it impacts all of the 60s?

Cattledog Today's delivery did not materialize. I go out of town for four days starting tomorrow. Bummer. All the shocking details here:

nrcooled For those with cars stuck in NJ my driver left my house pretty quickly so that he can get up to Jersey to get cars out of purgatory. They are working to get those cars delivered as quickly as possible. Apparently, he doesn't do residential deliveries but Tesla/UPS has reassigned him to go get the cars. Hopefully some of you still waiting can get some relief (and your cars) from this.

Goterps My driver left an hour ago and said the same thing. He had one car left to deliver in King George VA tomorrow and then back to NJ to get more.

Thank you! Just finished my session with my DS. Both he and the driver were great. Looking forward to driving it tomorrow.

Adstein Scott just dropped my car off from the same truck, VIN 3,092. It was pitch black out so I don't have great pictures. Excited for the sun to rise. He is now off to MA for his last tesla of the load.

PattyChuck Just got word from my DS. Delivery window has been pushed back from Dec 15-31 to Jan 27-Feb 10. Zero reasons given. Pretty frustrated with Tesla now, but at least I might have a chance to win my over/under office pool of January 31st (I took the over).
The only thing keeping me from coming totally unglued is knowing that there are people in front of me in line that have not yet received their vehicle, and that there's a chance I'll get mine before they get theirs (especially those who ordered 85kW'ers). The people low on the list and still waiting deserve to be nominated for sainthood!!

W8MM Our VIN 1380 is going to be delivered tomorrow morning. Or, so they say. It's been a long frustrating road and maybe we'll be at the end tomorrow!

Cattledog Delivery Delays
As reservation number 7006, I was originally slated for February/March. I responded to the surprise e-mail in early December and got a 12/15-12/31 window. I got a call in late December that said 'early January'. Wednesday, 1/2 I was told the car was in Arizona and coming soon. On Sunday, 1/6 I was told it was slated to be delivered Monday, 1/7 at 9 AM. On Tuesday 1/8 I was told the car was still in Arizona and now coming 1/10. You can read it all here with a healthy dose of sarcasm...

bonnie Ultimately Tesla is responsible for the delivery process. But you've read countless stories here on the forum at how unresponsive some of the UPS drivers have been. It would have been nice if your blog had mentioned that it was an independent company delivering the car, to give a little context.
Again, Tesla is ultimately responsible. But the whole story is nice for anyone who reads your blog.

Nikoli I thought for sure you were getting it today! It should have been on the same truck...though he mentioned it was going to a Tesla tech first (winter wheels?)

Cattledog Bonnie - Happy to post the whole story when I know it. I don't know who is delivering my car. Anything I guess right now would probably be wrong. Tesla hasn't offered the name of the company. All I know is my contract is with Tesla.
It's really about them getting a good stream of communication from delivery entity, to delivery specialist, to buyer. I don't doubt my DS is telling me everything he knows. That he only knows the location of my car within 1,000 miles and 48 hours is way off the precision of every other aspect of this company. Huge disconnect. Not the Tesla we've known to now. Big problem for them to fix.
Space-x can deliver cargo on time, within an inch of accuracy, 25,000 miles away. Let's get them to drop off some of these things!

dsmith2189 Still waiting for my car. Paid in full 18 Dec. I was told today that it would be another week. Sainthood.... actually the whole walking on water may help me get my car sooner.

I take solice in knowing that I am not the only one with delivery woes. I found out today that my car made it as far as Oakland before going MIA. I've been trying to find out where it was for the last week. It has been sitting within spitting distance of the factory and no one could find it...

Al Sherman Just curious about the USAA thing. Do you have to have possession of the car before they'll give you indefinite insurance? Why the temporary short term thing?
Jan 9, 2013
Cattledog Al - Our policy runs in 6 month increments, 1/21-7/21 and then 7/21 - 1/21 the following year. When I called to insure the car last week, they put it on the current policy which ends 1/21. When I got to the County office (went there and DMV), I was informed they had to see proof of 30 days insurance to give me a 30 day temp registration. So USAA faxed over a copy of the next six months coverage.

Al Sherman Thanks for the quick reply. Just a little obsessive about having my ducks in a row. Been with USAA for over 30 years. Way back to the Air Force Academy days. They've been awesome.
