This morning I was behind a muscle car with the plate "PSI ENVY". Pulled up beside him going about 30 mph just before the road opens up in to a divided highway. He downshifted and floored it. I floored it (instant reaction, couldn't help it, like a cat that jumps when you startle it, and by the way no downshifting required!). I of course blew him away. In that moment I wish my license plate read "KW ENVY" as I pulled ahead up to highway speed.

    Is that rhetorical?
I think I understand just about all of them.
    (Too geeky I guess.)
I bet if you were curious about any in particular you could just Google the term/acronym and find answers.

Back at you. Is that rhetorical?

    Have not a clue.

Not quite. Googling "1001010" without context is not reallly useful.

This is now an off-topic quiz. Only valid since Teslas are favored by the geeky types and some have similar plates.

Funny thing is, I my circles, I am considered the geeky one. Truth be told I rely on the uber geeks for sustenance.

Not totally sure about that one.
1001010 is binary for 74 which is 'J' in the ASCII alphabet.
Possibly a reference to Hackfest 74 (1001010) (which happened in Georgia which matches the plate)?
Or, perhaps a reference to the programming language 'J'?
Or maybe the driver is 6'2" tall (74")?

Some more thoughts for VFX on his Geek Plates link
(mods feel free to move this and related to a "Geek plates" separate topic)

    Some Linux ones:
"Root 777" : Root = Linux computer superuser... 777 are file permissions that means everyone can read and write any file. Basically they are saying they have full access to a unix system and will let everyone else in.
"RM -RF *" : The unix command to recursively delete all your files and ignore any file protection bits. (Basically wipe out your hard disk). Danger Will Robinson.
"7DEV7TRK" - Hardware devices on Unix have software drivers in the "/dev/" directory. "7DEV7TRK" is like "/dev/trk" which means to me a software developers truck.
"Opn Src" = "Open Source" (software with the sourcecode available to all for any purpose)

    ALT-F4: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ALT%2BF4

"WTF OMFG" (What The Frack? - Oh My Fracking Gawd)
"HEY STFU" ("Hey, Shut The Frack Up")

"BFG 9000" ("Big Fraggin' Gun") the most powerful weapon in the Quake/Doom game series.

Ideas on the 31337 plate here.

At least the first comment was pro-electric. Most of Jalopnik and it's regulars still follow the "It's powered by coal = dirty" partial-myth.

Yes, a coal-fired power plant is dirty. There is zero debate about that.

However, as most of us here know, when accounting for well-to-wheel pollution an EV puts out about half the pollution of a gas-powered vehicle.

    Hi,
That picture on the tow truck was taken traveling East on the Hayward San Mateo Bridge, not far from TM's headquarters. TM dealer plates are not an uncommon sight in the Bay Area. The odd thing is the use of an open truck as TM owns several enclosed trailers...

I've had this thread tucked away for the day that I get my own EV vanity plate, and that day is nearly here.

I'll be getting one of the first Chevy Volts in a couple months -- I've been dreaming of a Tesla for years, but I can't justify a Roadster and I don't want to wait until the Model S is out in volume. So I know I'm a poser, please be gentle :) I'll be doing the 3-year lease on the Volt, so by end of 2013 I'll be back in the market, in particular for a higher performance pure EV.

I have learned that in my state (Georgia) and maybe others as well, I order the plate first, and then register the car with it. So I can go ahead and get my plate before I actually have the car. I just have to register a car on it within 2 years or it returns to the pool.

Soooo, I have gone through this entire 32 page thread and made a list of all of the plates that remotely appeal to me. I called up the state DMV and talked the clerk into checking a couple for me (all taken!) but I've got a list of 35+ plates to check. I don't think I'll be able to talk someone into checking all of them :)

Does anyone know of a way to check plate availability, either nationally or specifically for Georgia? I believe it's against the law to just "run plates" to see who a car is registered to, unless you're a cop and have reasonable cause, but just checking whether it's a valid plate might be doable.
  • Sep 10, 2010
    SByer
Wow, that's nasty. Here in CA, you just start the ordering process online and it kicks you back each time it has a match.
  • Sep 10, 2010
    Jaff
Somewhat the same here in Ontario (CA).

You fill out a form with up to three choices...hand it in to the clerk...they input the info to the MOT computer...it either gets accepted or rejected...if accepted, you can buy it on the spot.

I don't know if our new "Green" plates work in the same manner though.

Ottawa Doug has a green plate...is it a vanity plate?...if you don't mind me asking Doug, how did you go about acquiring it?
  • Sep 10, 2010
    Doug_G
They don't allow Green Vehicle plates to be vanity plates. They are all of the format GVAA 000 (or VEAA 000 for Vehicle Ecologique).

Telsa (Hans) got the plates for me, but according to the MTO website the process is exactly the same (and the price is the same) as for any normal plate. You just have to have a "qualifying vehicle". Currently the complete list of qualifying vehicles is:

"Tesla Motors Inc, 2010 Roadster Convertible".
    (end of list)

Thanks guys for the feedback. I guess I'll try making periodic calls to the DMV to whittle down the list. They allow me to ask for 3 checks over the phone, so it'll just take me 10 phone calls to get through the list :) No big deal, I'll just spread it out over a few days so I don't get on their enemy list.

As A "stared" commenter on Jalopnik, I went back through that thread and "promoted" some good comments and replied to others, trying to bring some facts into the discussion... I'm not quite sure why both the Jalopnik editorial staff and its commenters are so dead set against TM...

They're just dead set against electric cars, primarily because
    a) they're not educated or
    b) Napoleon Complex: they think the noise, power, and exhaust from ICEs make up for their tiny penises.

We are in Westchester County and waiting for ours........May 21/22, maybe.

We are thinking of organizing a road rally in late June.
  • May 3, 2011
    Slackjaw
We're still waiting, ETA first week of June! Unbearable. The first few weeks of waiting were the worst. The next few weeks were the worst too. And it went downhill from there.

If you are going to organise a rally please make a separate thread to bring in any interested parties... I'd be into it. A suprising (not!) number of friends and relatives are planning to visit in June/July to play with our new toy so I might have a passenger or co-driver...

I am also planning to do a lesson and maybe some open track days at Raceway Park road course (link), and have already talked to the organiser about getting some NEMA 14-50's for us to recharge from but if there's only one socket then it could get ugly. It's about 55 miles drive from my house so in theory I could get there and back (and do a few laps) without a recharge but I don't want to rely on that as it would undoubtedly detract from the fun. When I swapped some emails with the guy about a month ago he had never had a Roadster down there and was quite keen to help.

So, finally got my "standard" plates and can now change to a vanity plate. (Why can't we have vanity plates from the get-go??).

In FL they won't allow "protest" registrations, which means that I couldn't have anything that included "NO" such as NO_GAS or NO_OIL. I asked what statute prohibited the use of the word "NO" but no-one could quote me and I figured the tax collectors office is not a place to start an argument (actually the lady helping me was very pleasant and kind!). Other variations such as ZERO_GAS were not available; so I settled on the following:
