Powder Coating Wheels part 2

Well, my body shop did it. They really didn't go into it much with me but I think they PC them off the car (obviously) and then put the stickers on and clearcoated to make sure they stayed on. I'm not 100% sure as I left it up to them to figure that out. They did re-bleed and unplug the lines also. They did a great job.

Im going to powder coat my grey with grey, but looking for someone with experience in the Bay Area (preferably San Jose). Anyone got any leads or places they've gone that they trust or can recommend?

Love the red calipers! What body shop did the work for you...and how many days did it take them? (If you do not mind posting it or PM-ing me, how much did it cost you?) I am also in So Cal and and thinking of powdercoating my calipers as well. Thanks in advance...

The place I did it is LTMW. It is in Duarte off the 605 freeway. When I had the M3 and the Z4, I took my car there and have been going there ever since. Very reasonable pricing and a great bunch of car enthusiasts.

Wow! Good luck with the move; I loved every minute of a short and sweet 3-month stint in the Redmond/Seattle area several summers ago.

Now, you'll have to cough up $100 extra every year for driving all-electric! Atleast, you'd be driving on really clean power.

19" and 21" lugnuts and centercaps the same size?

Could one of you experts tell me:

    1) Are the centercaps for 19" and 21" Telsa wheels the same size and interchangeable?
    2) Are the lugnuts for 19" and 21" Telsa wheels the same size and interchangeable?

I am asking because I am interested in powdercoating 19" wheels to match the 21" glossy grey color, and substitute in the 21" grey centercaps (which have a silver "T") and grey 21" lugnuts bought as stock parts from Tesla.

    Thanks!

The only way I can think of is to put some telltales on the part of the wheel that doesn't get powder coated. These are basically stickers that turn a different colour when specific temperatures are reached.

I'm just wondering if there is any interest in anyone in Southern California area who wants to trade plus cash (or buy outright) my powdercoated Satin black 19" wheels. I'll even include the black Tesla caps with red lettering. The reason why i didn't post in the for sale part yet is because it isn't quite for sale yet since my new rims are getting measured and fabricated right now and it takes 6-8 weeks to get to me. Just throwing this out there.

I think the powdercoating is the way to go if you want that subtle change while keeping a stock look. I get more than enough attention for the new look. Here is a picture of them:

I had my 19" wheels powder coated through Joe Torbati at Orinda Auto Detail. Joe called Tesla to get the exact color match as the grey 21" wheels, and also ordered black lug nut covers and grey center caps for me through Tesla. Looks amazing, especially after adding Roger's red decals on the center caps.

This after trying to get on the schedule for the in-house guy at the Fremont SC for over 6 months. They had also promised me a loaner, but like I said, after several months of back and forth trying to even get the guy's availability, I gave up after Joe offered. I'm glad I did...the wheels turned out perfect (as with anything Joe does).

Has anyone with a Pearl White P85 tried powder coating their 19" wheels in Pearl White? I ask because I am thinking about doing this. I once saw a green snakeskin Viper roadster with green snakeskin powder coated wheels and it was simply awesome!
  • Aug 15, 2014
    kevincwelch
I had them done at Wheel Tech in Skokie, which is just north of the Tesla service center. I'm very pleased. No damage to the tires and they were balanced perfectly by them. I mounted them myself and recently took them off when I cleaned the tires, wheels and coated the rims with Gtechniq C1. They don't coat the inner aspect of the spokes, but I suppose that's OK. Unless there is some functional risk, I'm not going to get uptight about it.

Cost was $150 per wheel and I paid extra to have the valve stems and Center caps painted. I think it was around $700 total.

I will likely bring my Rial Luganos to them for powder coating. Can't decide if I like the gunmetal or the anthracite grey more.

  • Oct 19, 2014

I'm planning on either powder coating or painting my 21" wheels satin black. Does anyone recommend one or the other, and a shop to do this in Los Angeles? I've gotten one quote from A&E for $1,500 for powder and $1,200 for paint, and another from Tag Motorsports for around $500 -so a lot of variation. Everything I've found online says it should be more like $50- $150/wheel...
  • Oct 20, 2014
    kevincwelch
I would go with powder coating. Generally speaking, it's more durable and offers more protection over paint. On the other hand, you might have more options in terms of color if you paint.

$150 per wheel is a reasonable price. A&E is gouging you if they are charging $1500. Might as well get new wheels for a bit more at that price.

I was able to dismount my wheels and deliver, so whomever you choose may change you extra for taking off your wheels. I got my wheels done at Wheel Tech in Chicago. They did a great job and mounted the tires and balanced the wheels for me. I put the wheels on back at my house. Balance is perfect as far as I can tell.

Thanks Kevincwelch, it sounds like as long as it's a good powder coat facility it's the better option. The only thing with paint I'm hearing is that it's easy to touch up. I knew that price was way off, unfortunately it's proven more difficult to find more places out here than I thought. Thanks again for the feedback!

When building my options with the PS in the store he was super helpful when I mentioned I liked the look of the 21" grey turbines. Rather than upsell me on a more expensive part, he talked me down to the 19" cyclone and recommended I get them powder coated in the aftermarket. He pointed out that with all the rain here, which creates a lot of potholes, and the 21" wheels just wouldn't hold up very long.

But now I have to decide on what color to go with :) Probably going with a dark grey satin... my exterior will be black, but not sure I want to go fully black with the wheels.

My Product Specialist recommended Seattle Wheel Service but I haven't done too much independent research yet. Their only negative review on Yelp is one person who was unhappy with the bill, but not the quality of work. As I get closer to my delivery, I'll look into it some more, but my PS was pretty hardcore into cars and customization so I feel comfortable taking his recommendation.

For those who went dark but got the Tesla T in the middle in silver/chrome... was that anything special or difficult for the shop to do? I'm sure every request comes with a cost, not worried about that, I assume any decent shop will have the capability to do it.

Definitely want to request that when I get my hands on my car in December... maybe I'll show them a picture and just tell them "like this please" :)

Both Tesla and a local tire center tried to mount the Nokian R2s to the Tesla cyclone rims I had power coated and were unable to get them to seat properly. After putting two of them next to a space heater, Tesla says two of them popped into place. I called the powder coating place and they say they've never had problems before. They just did a single coat in the inner portion of the rim and no clear coat there. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Thanks.

Anyone know the paint code used on the factory 21" turbines? Tesla calls it "Sonic Carbon" but that doesn't help if trying to get a wheel powdercoated by a 3rd party.
  • Nov 5, 2014
    dsm363
Apparently powder costing doesn't go by the same paint codes so knowing the exact code might not help. If you already have the 21" grey wheels can drive to the powder coating place and they have samples to hold up next to the wheel. I did that and got really close to factory look on the Cyclones.

Turns out the problem with my wheels was the powder coating of the inside of the rim. Tire wouldn't slide into place so they had to sand it off. Works fine now.
  • Nov 6, 2014
    iKhalid
I recently bought a used set of 21" rims and took them to a powder coating shop. Initially, I just wanted to have them done with the same stock silver colour due to a curb rash but then the guy showed me a colour that I wish I didn't see. It's a chrome-like powder coating that falls between silver and chrome. I'm attaching a pic of the sample he showed me.

Did anyone go with this colour before? I really want to see a rim with that colour to be able to decide.
I'm not a big fan of dark rims and I like the contrast between the silver wheels and the dolphin grey.

    IMG_20141106_162140.jpg

I believe a clear coat will be applied to the rims, which might have not been applied to the sample in the pic.

Got my P85D last week and my detailer just finished up with it today (wrap, tint, etc.,). He also powdercoated the 19" silver cyclones to look like the 21" gray turbines and I have to say it did the trick. Another Tesla owner was at the shop too and thought they really were 21" turbines!

Very cool, @commasign! Tesla did sell 19" gray cyclones briefly in Europe so, they have all the graphics ready. Not so for the base 19" that never had a gray equivalent.

Hmm... Strange here it Norway it seems like almost all grey cars have the grey 21"s for the summerwheels. So clearly a demand for grey wheels. Opted for the silver 21"s for summer wheels for that exact reason.

Powdercoating here is a bit on the expensive side, but considering getting my standard 19" winter wheels done as they are a bit boring. Considering them in some sort of black variant though.
  • Jan 16, 2015
    commasign
I think they're intentionally not offering 19" gray cyclones to avoid cannibalizing sales of the much more expensive and profitable 21" gray turbines.
  • Jan 17, 2015
    dsm363
That was my thought as well. They could easily prove them between silver Cyclones and the 21" rims. I mentioned this to someone at Tesla and they said they didn't want to add any more variables to the production line that necessary. I still think there is demand for them. It's not like the people in colder climates are demanding the 21" grey rims for winter use. They'll want 19" rims and if Tesla doesn't offer them in grey then they'll go aftermarket.

The color is called Sparkle Silver and it's slightly darker than the silver Tesla 21" wheels but not dramatically so. I just wanted to share some pics of my 21" rims that I bought used and had them powder coated. I got them today and sorry for the dirty car, the weather has been terrible in the past few days. The rims had curb rash but they were totally gone and look brand new now. I liked the original silver so I had them coated with a similar color. The clear coat is more durable and shinier than what they normally use for car wheels. As you can see, they look a bit darker when they are not under direct sunlight, but I think they look OK under the sun.

$1000 for any color/finish and they have loaner wheels, which for me was huge.
