Model S Shows Its True Colors (Photos) part 2

I think the red car at the Motor Trend COTY award was the new red. I would not say that it's darker, but perhaps brighter with a bit more orange. It's more like a Ferrari red.

My configuration specialist told me that the MT COTY car is the 2013 red. He also said that it would be a 3 month delay in my delivery

Delicious red! Are they going to give it a proper name other than just red?

My delivery specialist refers to it as 2013 Red. Pretty prosaic.

More poetic, Flame or Madder. Corvette already has Magnetic Red. They could go the Apple route with New Red. Or prophetically, Ticket Magnet Red. Personally I would prefer something with a little more pop, say Kick S Red, but somehow I don't see Tesla going with that one.

Don't care what they call it, just love it, especially now that my change from blue to red has been finalized and April/May delivery is looming.

Did some checking and this color appears close to PMS 186. I'll be visiting the Tesla store in DC on Monday, so I'll take some PMS samples with me to check the match.

    All right.

I like the red. I have never contemplated buying a red car in the past. I've seen the published pictured in this thread -- they seem more studio production photos.

Just got done with the design studio. For any of you who have seen it in person or have an opinion, how much is it like the design studio?

I first saw this red on one of the two cars on stage at the Motor Trend MOTY event in New York City. It was what set in motion my desire to change from blue to red. Like you, I've never had a red car or planned to have one. But this red... The Design Studio does not do full justice to the color.

    So, a couple questions.

    1. Is this different from the "Sunset Red" people saw on the Get Amped Tour?
    2. Is the red more like a Ferrari red and less like the deep red in the design studio?

Love the scenes around Boston. Brings back many memories of those sites, as I've visited most of them (my brother has lived in Concord for most of his adult life). You've taken very good photos but I agree that the camera does not do full justice to the green. It might be cool at some point in the future to shoot a few photos around Harvard and MIT, as Boston is the birthplace of several of the very best universities in the world.

To me all the colors on the S makes it look beautiful... Not really objective, i know.
It comes down to personal taste. Did you see the colors posted at the beginning of this thread (p.1)?

Now that we are passed the Signature, I noticed (no fact, just anecdotal) that the most popular colors seems to be Blue and Black, white right after

My Model S has been ordered with Metallic Grey exterior color. I am reading about Dolphin Grey in postings. I don't see any mention of Dolphin Grey in the color chart. Is this the same as the Metallic Grey? Thanks, Larry

You could just make links here to those threads. Sometimes people post photos without specifying the color and it is hard to tell if it is blue, black or green. It could be more organized that way.

    Martin Germany
    Hello from Germany,
I am waiting for my delivery. will probably be in September or October of this year. Here's my question: Has anyone dared to chose grey exterior with tan leather/gloss wood interior yet? it is daring, but it might be very avantgarde. If so, can you please post a picture with doors open?
    Thanks and cheers, Martin
  • Mar 7, 2013
    mulder1231
Martin, that's a very beautiful configuration, I'm sure many people (like me) ordered that combination. I don't have a photo with the door open, but in this one you can see the tan leather color from the outside through the window. I'll try to take some pictures with the door open and the dash in view, and post them here later.

I does show dirt more, so you will have to be a little more careful. But I expect you would be able to clean spots in most cases.

Btw. I'm surprised blue is the most popular color according to the poll so far. I see several Teslas on the road every day, here in the Bay Area, but most are black, white, signature red or grey.

    Regarding medved's chart, two observations:
    1. I bet the Signature Red %age will precipitously drop in the next year. I'll give 10:1 odds. Any takers?
    2. I find the chart confusing because the color names at the left do not match the colors of the bars.

    Boring colours?

OK, we took the plunge and are eagerly awaiting our S here in Switzerland, but what colour?

I have to say that the reduced colour selection is pretty boring!

Here's what I see in my configurator as of 15 November 2014:

    Non-metallic black
    Non-metallic white
    Silver metallic
    Dark blue metallic
    Dark grey metallic
    Pearl white
    Red multi-layer metallic

Both the dark green and brown have thankfully vanished, but in my opinion the remaining selection is pretty boring and we are hoping that Tesla introduce some more before we finally have to decide.

Am I alone in thinking this a pretty limited selection? And many of these are "non-colours" like greys and blacks. OK, the pearl white is pretty, but downtown Zrich doesn't get Californian sun, and that red is "not quite right". A deeper shade would be great. Silver is deeply boring, black is a pain to keep clean, I like the dark blue but again worry about keeping it clean. That's probably be the colour if we are forced to choose, but "forced" is the operative word here.

We are really looking forward - but colours...

    Richard
(By the way, I'm British in case anyone is wondering about my spelling of "colours")!

I don't know that I'd call them boring, but they certainly aren't extreme. I'm sure they represent what the majority of customers want, and since Tesla is production limited, it makes sense what they are offering.

It's pretty easy to get a wrap in whatever color you want these days anyhow.
  • Nov 15, 2014
    andrewket
Interesting to note, at least on the P85D tracking thread, that silver is the least common. It's interesting that Tesla didn't kill silver.

I agree with rsargeant, the current color options are limiting. I think Tesla is going to do something special with the new paint shop once it's online.

I take exception to that! The green's classy and the brown has its own appeal. It was always better to have them on the roster than otherwise.

I've been following Tesla cars for a while now, and I have a note regarding their colors.

They should offer a high class range of cheery colors, by which I mean, brighter lighter colors, happy colors. Psychology studies show that darker colors make people more depressed and negative. For success of the people seeing, owning, and purchasing the car, a wider selection of factory-standard positive psychology colors should be available. And since these are luxury cars, the available colors should be high class (i.e., not some mid-brightness cheap Toyota blue or something). I recently saw a P85D "racing blue" which is similar to a pretty sky blue driven supposedly by some kid in a Redwood City neighborhood, and that is exactly the beautiful positive color type that I'm talking about which should be among the factory options. This would require an investment by Tesla to offer these additional colors, but would be made back by Tesla in the big picture many fold by increased sales and satisfaction (higher yields).

As to what particular colors to choose, I leave that up to a color designer. So far, I already identified one: that "racing blue". Since White is already available, and the available Red seems almost "bright" enough by itself, and I do believe you also have a happy Green (which is for whatever reason an odd color to choose), I think perhaps a color expert would have to do an expensive selection of at least one more "happy" color. I mulled over this myself, and besides banana (yellow) which to me is just silly, I came up with Amber. It's not quite prison construction orange nor activist florescent yellow, and nor is it poop gold or piss yellow; it's more like a richer luminescent dusk sunset color. And I'm not satisfied with that being the "other new color" I'm trying to pinpoint. What I know the color should be is something of a fantastic tint that might not have a "regular" color name, and that should be fine.

Also, if they brightened up their "dark blue" just a small tad to a nice tint that is visibly a nice deep dark blue even in darker lighting, that might "lift the spirits" of the average factory colors. A similar attempt could be done with their cream, silvers, grays, and other non-black dark colors available.

As a business strategy, it made sense to start with subdued colors to "sneak" the product out into the public without much fanfare. And going forward, a lot of really good customers want to maintain the full availability of those subdued understated colors. However, now that Tesla is well known, it makes a decent business strategy to invest in additional "happy" cheery colors as well. They don't have to sell like hotcakes: they just have to be rich enough, high class enough, and happy enough that the positive vibe of those beautiful Teslas driving around our road systems is just all that much better.

    - - - Updated - - -

Hmm. Correction: I do not see the "bright green" I thought was available factory; that must have been custom. My mistake. (And I can't find the Edit button.)

When you say "brown" do you mean "titanium"? Color is subjective. My color choice was made to get anything but red, white or black only because I have had nothing but those colors plus silver. The green and the titanium I think are super nice. You can't go wrong as long as its a Tesla!

Thanks for posting this again...I love seeing your car every time it's posted. What's the name of your color?

I've been on the hunt to find the perfect color to Plastidip my car... I'm trying very hard to emulate this Maserati color called "blu inchiostro" (see attached images). The closest I can find is the KP Pigments color "Deep Sea Blue"... I'm also considering this Deep Sea Blue with a blend of Alien RL-71 (see this link: Genesis Coupe, Deep Sea blue w/ alien RL-71).

Your color is very close to these.

It's a slightly darker shade of Audi's Sprint Blue color.

I've decided to go with the KP Pigments color Deep Sea Blue, should be done in a couple of weeks. I can't decide to go with the Satin finish like on the Audi below, or an Autoflex high-gloss finish like on the Maserati above.

This decision would've drove me crazy. Excellent choice. Do they put the deep sea blue over a black plasti base or some other color to make it pop like that?

Silver Metallic wouldn't have been my first choice, but we thought the CPO was a good deal. I love it in person, and the more I see it, the more I think it's one of the better colors.

    @Tech_Guy,

Incredible! More than likely the color combo I'm going with....been planning this combo for quite some time.....Any recommendations or advice? Love the 'Blackout'. Outstanding Job!

Nothing with good composition, but here are two. The first was taken at dusk and the silver starts to look like a light blue. The 2nd was under our carport charging, so you can see how it looks with shadows.

Go with your gut on the color choice... For me originally I was thinking black midnight silver or blue, but living in Los Angeles those colors are everywhere, not just on Teslas but every other car as well, red however really stands out and I've always wanted a red car... Once I saw one in the local showroom in RED it was all over it had to be Multi Coat RED.

Something else I did was coat the whole car in paint protective film from 3M, specifically the scotch guard pro product as I want my car to look showroom new for years to come and be easy to clean, without worry of damaging the paint or adding swirls. With the film coating I can use a spray wax for a quick detail while supercharging without worry of damaging the paint creating scratches by rubbing dirt on the clear coat of the paint.
