Dec 14, 2012
AnOutsider Has anyone heard anything new on this front? I have to be honest, even tho I'm on the list for Soflauthor's CCI, I'm rather digging the open space now. The only thing I'd prefer now is to have the ribbed floor and perhaps the cupholders as seen here:

Other than that, the cubby works well for me, and I like putting things down in the center.

Dec 14, 2012
Citizen-T I'm sure that this is being worked in the background but not a priority right now. I was just thinking the other day about how I haven't heard any whining about it since people started getting their cars.
Dec 15, 2012
SigGuy Well allow me to whine a bit then.
What I've learned after one week of ownership of a Performance S is that anything that is loose anywhere in the car will go flying as soon as you punch it. I keep my sunglasses in the cubby and they fly out every time I wanna have a little fun which is multiple times per drive. My phone slides back and forth and even things in the back slide around. I feel like I need velcro for everything I own so I can drive the car the way it wants to be driven without objects flying all over. Some kind of storage feels absolutely necessary at this point. Hurry up Soflauthor!

Yawron Where is the mid-console???
I dont know - went to see a S today (Oslo) and was really put off by the lacking console. Look inside of a Panamera where the console is really a part of the interior. Let us face it - even if the shift stick is not needed, we lean towards the center while we drive and would like to have a nice look and feel for our right side. The open space makes me feel strange. No balance. My other impressions:
- Wow - what a big screen! I dont know - have to get used to it.
- Why not a sport seats option?
These three issues were my negatives. Mostly I was very impressed by the look and feel of everything else. But you know what? The look and feel inside is really a go/no-go for a car enthusiast. I am in the thinking box: Should I accept these strange negatives in order to follow my "first mover" instinct for a nice EV? Or should I wait another year or so. Leaning towards the latter - that is so subjective we car drivers are....sorry Elon. BMW 525 xd or Tesla S - thats my dilemma. I will give it some more thought - I was so hopeful - but now strangely disappointed.
Dec 22, 2012
Francis Lau Having driven my Model S for 1.5 weeks now, I personally like the open console a lot. I have the cubby already so I use that for iPhone cable and such. I don't need sunglasses in Seattle or coins for meters but those can easily go there. The only thing I want are the cupholders that are shown in the pics above. I have a simple idea but I need to prototype first. I will post if it works out.

That rear console is #1 on my wish list. I think it looks nice and could be a decent storage option for some of the items that I like to have with me that I don't need immediate/frequent access to like a flashlight and pocket knife.
I really hope they aren't too expensive when they are finally available.
Dec 30, 2012
Bill in Austin I'm not convinced that I need any sort of semi-permanent console mod; but I certainly don't like loose, messy items rolling around in the console recess of my elegant Tesla.
I've been looking for a solution; and I've finally discovered one that works very well for me.
I found this little soft tote at Michael's crafts store here in Austin, and it works perfectly. It fits snugly into the space and neatly holds glasses, pens, sticky notes, phone, and anything else I want to have within easy reach. Actually everything is much more accessible than when I had to grope around under the console lid on my prior car while trying to drive at the same time.
I hope you find this helpful.

SuperCoug Get a shoulder strap for that thing and you've got a fine purse.
I'm still not sure that fits my idea of elegant concealed storage but its better than all that crap rolling around in that gutter.
Speaking of a purse, is there still enough room for your wife to put her purse in there next to it? I know my wife is really looking forward to that aspect of the car.
Jan 8, 2013
Fredj Just received my invite to configure my Model S and excited by that but STILL DISAPPOINTED that the front center console is basically a track in the floor board with a two cup holders and small compartment at the elbow. Why not add a raised console to keep phone, pen, paper, loose change for tolls, parking etc or a larger lockable compartment? Imagine reaching down to the floor for a quarter and blasting the toll both.
Let's get a console that is usable. This has been going on way too long....

Has anyone heard a whisper about the Opportunity Console options in the last month? I suspect its been quietly killed internally... like the pano shade.
Jan 9, 2013
SuperCoug I sure hope not! I DEFINITELY want to buy both a front console and the rear seat storage armrest! I will be very disappointed if they simply go silent on this issue and pretend that they were never working on a solution.
- - - Updated - - -
By the way, despite joking that this looks like a purse I immediately went to Michael's and bought one. I'm happy to report that they are currently 40% off which dropped the price to only $8. I'm not crazy about the colorful fabric on the inside but hopefully you won't be able to see that very well when it's full of stuff.
Jan 9, 2013
Larry Chanin I don't have any inside information, but the two situations may not be comparable.
For the sunshade Tesla continues to state on its website that it is free with the purchase of the panoramic roof. It just never committed to when the shade would be delivered.
In contrast in the case of the consoles and rear storage, Tesla never went on record regarding pricing, so there appears to be an additional profit opportunity for offering these as options.
The problem is that if they continue to remain totally silent they can lose a profit making opportunity. For example, I asked Tesla on a number of occasions the status of the premium floor mats and never received a satisfactory answer. As a result I decided to go ahead and order a complete set of third-party custom mats after being surprised to learn that I needed at least rear floor mats anyway since Tesla was not providing them. Very strange.
Likewise the longer Tesla remains silent the more likelihood that other third-party alternatives will fill this void. I spoke to the General Manager of a high-end custom interior shop, and he is very familar with the Tesla interior situation and is very anxious and capable of provide these services to Model S owners. Tesla went to the trouble of initiating this thread some time ago and they really owe it to their customers to provide some some sort of indication whether they remain serious about pursuing these earlier commitments.
Larry
Jan 10, 2013
Robert.Boston Hi, Larry:
You make a great point: silence from Tesla opens a market opportunity for aftermarket suppliers. I increasingly comfortable with the limited storage up front in the Model S, but the complete absence of anything in the rear will be a problem once we open the house in Maine. I know that @soflauthor is working on a (front) center console, but I would love to see your custom interior contact's ideas for both a front and a rear console. There's no obvious reason why Tesla Motors is the best source for these add-ins (aside from a comparative advantage in matching decor trim and leather).

Larry Chanin I'm sorry I should have been clearer. This gentleman runs the custom shop at duPont Registry in Tampa. He also runs a monthly exotic car meet-up and I was there to discuss what would be involved for our club members to participate.

Soflauthor We're privately held
I'm enjoying following this conversation, but can't comment further on the merits of our solution on this thread, except to say that competition is good, and often results in the best product for the consumer.
With respect to Larry's comment on a solution offered by a custom shop -- after having done substantial research on "custom" solutions by shops that specialize in the genre, it's very likely that any center console solution offered by a custom shop will cost at least $1.5 to $2K and probably more.
Jan 27, 2013
jwal Am I the only one who doesn't really care if there is a console? I mean of course there need to be more cup holders, but why would you want to fill up the back seat(and lose functionality)? I think it showcases the lack of conventional transmission in the front when the floor is flat

Jan 27, 2013
jerry33 Well, I would like some hidden storage that can be easily reached by the driver for things like gloves, work dog tag, phone charging cord, driving sunglasses, kleenex, etc. The cubby would work for a couple of those items if it had a door--but it doesn't. Otherwise that stuff will just be loose in the centre area and roll around. Plus it will be visible to anyone looking in.
Jan 27, 2013
Al Sherman I'm certain you're not the only one. I've seen many comments from folks who like the open space. I don't think I will. I'm gonna buy soflauthor's CCI as soon as he gets to me on the list. Just a personal preference.

Herbys This is unexplainable to me. The Tesla is a solid 10 in almost every way in which you can compare it to other cars. Performance, efficiency, looks, handling, UI, you name it. But it gets a solid 1 in the area "interior storage space". Yes, a 1. I have owned about fifteen cars so far, and driven about a hundred different rentals. The Model S is by far the car with less storage available. Even my old 92 Miata had waaay more storage space than the Model S. My tiny Mercedes SLK two-seat convertible about quadruples the storage space of the Model S (one large glove box, two large lidded compartments between the seats, one between the back rests and two slots behind the seats, plus pockets in the doors). My Toyota Sienna has four large lidded storage boxes, six small lidded ones and about ten "pockets". My Model S has one tiny, tiny globe box that barely fits the manual, and not one single pocket. It is ridiculous.
Do people really never, ever have to keep anything at hand in the car?
To me the bare minimum a car has to be able to fit is:
A pair of gloves
a small emergency kit (nothing big, the typical one sold at Walgreens is adequate)
a pair of glasses or two
A set of glass-cleaning wipes
A microfiber cloth
A phone charger or USB cable
Somewhere for a trash bag (I am appalled that modern cars don't have a formal trash box, a lined trash box would even be a revenue source for the manufacturer in the form of form-fitted replaceable liners).
A compact umbrella.
And a few other small things.
If this was a mediocre car, or even a regular "great" car, I would accept that maybe it scores a 3 in one category, designers can't do everything perfectly. But that a car that managed to outdo every other car out there in almost every single category underperforms every other car in the planet by a wide margin in one of the most trivially solvable aspects is bizarre.
Feb 10, 2013
brianman @Herbys - I think you mean concealed or enclosed storage. The Model S is industry leading in sedan storage space, is it not?

Feb 26, 2013
AustinPowers Not just bizarre but bordering insulting, and defintitely most annoying. Sure, if all you carry around/need is an iPhone and a keyfob, go for the Model S. But especially for families - and a car with that much interior room (as opposed to "usable and enclosed storage space") is aimed at families, is it not? - the Model S underperforms drastically in that respect. Of course one could argue you should buy third-party cupholders, stick-on/hang-on storage devices and the like. But for a car in that price category such a suggestion is ridiculous to put it mildly, when cars one fifth the price of an S offer all these amenities for free.
Feb 26, 2013
Bronco23 I put a Black Tumi shaving kit bag in the center. Works great. I dont have picture but it fits perfect and holds plenty.
Feb 26, 2013
kevincwelch I believe I have gotten over my storage and cup holder issue. The cup holders in the center are not ideal, but my coffee mug sits there just fine for my morning trips to work. I bought that small Piel leather storage box, and it holds all the essentials (gate pass, sunglasses, coins). I never had a lot of clutter in my previous car, but frankly, having even less now makes it nicer...
Feb 26, 2013
dsm363 I'm finding the same thing. I wasn't concerned as much as some about storage but it definitely was a valid concern. My old car had maps from various states some 10+ years old (not needed anymore) and CDs in cases or those holder devices (also not needed) and other junk. I do hope they come out with various options in the future for people that need it though.
Feb 26, 2013
AnOutsider Storage is not that huge of an issue. I kinda like throwing stuff down there. Usable cupholders is still a big issue (front and back), but otherwise, I'm enjoying the open console much more than I thought I would.
Feb 26, 2013
AustinPowers It seems that most of you are single or couples without young children - I thought the Model S (with its gigantic interior storage and optional jumpseats) was mainly aimed at families. And those (like ourselves - two kids, 1 and 5 years old) always have loads of things to store on roadtrips.
And about not needing maps anymore: am I really the only one who still finds a quick look at a (current of course) paper map more convenient than looking a location up on a browser? Especially in rural areas where coverage/connection might often be quite bad. At the moment, when I am somewhere I haven't been before and I am looking for a road / POI / etc., I get out my map from the door pocket, open it, and look the place up. Takes hardly more than a few seconds. I would bet that action takes less time than telling the SIS (seventeen-inch-screen) what to look for and waiting for the result to pop up. Or is entering a location, search and display of the result that quick?
Feb 27, 2013
steve841 I've got 2 little ones ... but 99% of the time it's just me in the car. And - as I've hammered Tesla from the start - it's inconceivable in this day and age to not have secure storage. The car with the pano is wide open viewing just waiting for a thief for a quick and easy smash and grab. If you keep stuff in the cubby, just wait till the first time you try a 0-60 run ... and watch everything fly out in perfect sequence ...
I know Tesla designers wanted to show off all that space. Fine, do it on the prototypes, not on the real world model.
NOTE: The original S had a full center console .....
Just my .02.
Feb 27, 2013
AnOutsider Might be the generation I'm from, but I'd prefer to just use GPS or look digitally. Good point on being in a rural area, but I can't remember ever being somewhere where my maps didn't work (granted, before the S all of our cars had hard drive maps so no need for connectivity).
The original S also had a Mercedes chassis and likely no flat floor...
Feb 27, 2013
ElSupreme This does happen. It happens to me all the time on upward sloping onramps. But I have used it while demoing the car as a way to get my sunglasses out! And I have lost 3 rolls of blistex this way. (I have gone under the seats and found them all). But I don't really find this as an annoyance yet.
I have always been a fan of the open center area. And am a bigger fan now that I have it. It is about the exact perfect space to put Chinese or Thai takeout food. Not to mention I LOVE having my phone sit there charging normally.
I find that the less storage space I have the less clutter I have. For example I put a dry cleaning ticket on the floor area, all the way forward on Saturday. When Tuesday came, I could easily see the ticket to remind me to pick up the laundry. I naturally didn't bring the ticket into the dry cleaners with me (I never seem to be able to do that). Picked up my dry cleaning got back in the car and finally got home from work. When I got out of the car I saw the ticket and threw into the trash bin when I got out. It is great.
I think a fold down armrest with 2 cupholders in the back should have probably been there. But don't knock the minimalism before you try it. It seems that people are actually liking it. I know I do.
There are two things I find lacking. The cubby is about 1.5" too short (not deep enough). My Sunglasses case sticks out a little bit. There needs to be a place to put a microfiber cloth. Right now I use one of the cup holders. But am constantly moving it from one side to another. I also plan on putting a small divider vertically in the cubby very close to the drivers side. So I can put my RFID access cards upright. They slide around a little bit inside the cubby and require a second to find every now and then.
The cupholders are better than my VW GTI's were. And infinately better than my dad's cupholders in his Audi TT. I do sit fairly far back, so they aren't behind me, so I might not be normal in that regard.
Feb 27, 2013

That was the interior I was hoping for all those waiting years. The moment I first saw pics of the real production interior I almost lost all my faith in Tesla designers and the Model S in general. And seeing that pic of the prototype interior again makes me feel "yuck" when I think of the production version. Ghastly in comparison, no elegance, simply the idiotic "as much empty space as possible" doctrine. Two thumbs down once again.
Feb 27, 2013
Blurry_Eyed I use a small eyeglass microfiber cloth to clean the touch screen and I keep it in the little cubby that is created by the silver hand hold extrusion by the door handle. Feb 27, 2013
bosgig I'll echo prior comments by saying that I've found the lack of storage to be a non-issue since I've had the car. I realized that I hadn't even opened the center console storage in my old car in at least 2 years and had no idea what junk was in there, and when I cleaned out the storage slot in the door I realized it was just a bunch of unnecessary junk too (a seven year old VHS tape. . .really???). The only storage areas I actively used in my old car were the glove box (which provides some out-of-sight storage) and the cubby--the same storage areas I now have in my S. Sometimes I think more storage just invites more clutter. I've also adjusted to the placement of the cup holders--still not ideal, but manageable. The lack of rear cup holders is really the only issue along these lines that I still view as a real design oversight, but I just see it as so trivial in the grand scheme of things that I choose not to worry about it.

Feb 28, 2013
gregincal Our Honda CRV doesn't really have any internal storage either, just a fold down center console that doesn't hold much. I don't know, we always have tons of stuff when we head out with our child, and it's all in bags we toss on the back seat or in my wife's large handbag or a backpack that would sit behind the passengers feet in other cars, but now has a place to live in the center channel. The only concealed storage apart from the trunk (or the frunk in the case of the S) that I've every used in any car I've owned is the glove box. I also like putting my laptop bag in the center channel rather than on the passenger seat when I go to work.

Herbys - I could not agree more! I had a similar thread on this. Certain of the Tesla fan/owner population (a pretty big portion) seems unwilling to acknowledge clear misses. This was a huge whiff! All of those folks who say they 'quite like the empty space', I would ask if it came with the typical center console, only it was removable, would you actually remove it? I bet the answer would be a resounding "No". In short, I think what people mean is "meh - I've gotten used to not having it and I live with that". It's a whiff - Let's accept that and move on.

Apr 16, 2013
ElSupreme I would have taken out the center console in a heartbeat. One of the things I really liked about the interior was the openness. I know from past experiences that if there are cubbies, they fill up, with crap and trash. In my Dodge Neon I had NO storage outside of the ashtray. And guess what, I didn't have useless crap all over my car. I bought a Jetta with some storage space. Guess what happened. I started traveling with more trash, and more crap I don't need.
I have two places where most of my 'critical' stuff goes. My glove box carries pretty much everything I need. It isn't super easy to get everything, but I don't use anything in there much so it works out. I also keep a multi-tool, some misc tools, and a flashlight in the trunk. I used to put this in the spare tire well, or in an alcove on the side. Same thing with the Model S, nicely kept in the EVSE bag.

kevincwelch Once you start accumulating diapers, finding old pacifiers under the seats and seeing glitter in the cracks of your upholstery, storage bins all over the place will be real nice!

brianman Even if you can manage an aftermarket seatbelt, I don't recommend putting children in the opportunity vacancy.

Miuaiga Ok, let's watch percentages, boobs and bags! Hello. A woman with both. If nothing else, using the place for elbows and cups does not compute! Some have mentioned a storage bag on driver seat. Not in mine. Need beverage area forward. What were they thinking? I can deal with pocketbook. Ideal: between seats middle, but need a storage area that does not show all the junk, plus beverage area that is equidistant from my elbow resting on included console area and end of arm. Hello? Anyone listening.?

Soflason +1
Yes, definitely listening.

NigelM I wager that 90% of their wives and girlfriends do.
Apr 18, 2013
Al Sherman LOL. My wife likes the open space much better. Though she admits the CCI is perfect and beautiful. The flip side is: the center console in her Highlander is large. It's so crammed full of stuff that I don't think Monte Hall could ask for anything that isn't in there somewhere. I'd hate to imagine all that junk sitting in the opportunity space.
Apr 18, 2013
RNG I still find the arm rests too high and too far to the rear, cup holders too high and should be lower and forward, and there should be at least some small concealed storage for the necessities, plus someplace to put the trash bag. Simple redesign of the existing center lump. Presumably the more this is mentioned by us, the greater possibility the designers will consider it in the future. I look forward to seeing the Tesla designed insert. RNG

Miuaiga Agree!

Just saw Tesla's soon-to-be released Drop-in Center Console. Thank goodness. And, it this one looks like it is taking great advantage of the vertical space while looking stylish. I can't wait. Has anyone heard at what price it might be sold?

bonnie 90% (or more) of the forum members are male - that doesn't translate to the buying population. I don't know the Model S stats, but personal experience is that better than 30% of Model S drivers are women.
And while I don't know a single man who carries something they call a man-bag (okay, maybe one) - every guy I work with either has a backpack (majority) or a briefcase. Same thing, diff name.
Nine posts. You lose.![]()
What do I win?
I can't reply to the rest because I'm a little hung up on your 'boobs and bags' statement. Really? REALLY? How respectful of you.
Apr 20, 2013
Panacea Lol Bonnie, that was exactly what crossed my mind when I read that post....as if women aren't interested in buying this car!
Apr 21, 2013
Miuaiga Ladies, let us get real. That post was made by me, a woman, one that is practical! I'm way in front of you on the feminist side so put your howling aside. Back to let's get real. I don't know about you, but I do, in fact, have boobs and bags. Neither of which were considered when some aspects of the interior of this car were designed. You want to talk about women buying the car? Then "hello!" Let us accommodate them just w tad, shall we? The inability to adjust the height of the seat belt, not only chops my neck off, as it would a gentleman of similar height, but, thus, presses most uncomfortably upon my, Heavens, should I say it?, boobs. And, I do carry a combo handbag/brief case that needs a home, because I'm always on the fly, as do the iPhone, sunglasses, bottles of water.
Since I have always been one of the first women to do most things, including entering my profession, which was a man's, I am also one of the first women to have a Tesla S, as are you. But, gals, I've been around long enough to ask for what I need, not wait for someone to read my mind and then, not unsurprisingly, never manage to deliver it. I say again, get real. If you have boobs and bags, wake up. If don't then it's not your problem, is it?

ZestyChicken I have yet to meet a female Model S owner. I'm sure there are plenty - it's certainly not some testosterone laden vehicle. It's very tasteful and should appeal universally. Plenty of women have complimented me on the car. That being said, in general men are more likely to spend big money on a car than women. Not universally true but a fact none-the-less. What the percentage is? Not sure. Maybe 90% is too high. Maybe not... Here's a cool article on gender disparity in car sales:
http://247wallst.com/2012/04/23/men-love-ferrari-women-love-mini-gm-f-tm-hmc-nsany-kimtf-mzdaf-szkmf/
As for backpacks, I do have a sachel bag, but that is WAY different than a purse. WAY DIFFERENT....I think...
I will say it doesn't fit all that great in the center area because it doesn't really sit. I throw in the passenger side of the car mostly or the trunk.-
Apr 24, 2013
Neech Add me in to the ladies owner group. Picked my S up Saturday and love driving it. It's just too hard to identify male v female owners by user names, so trying to come up with percentages is a guessing game.
Apr 24, 2013
AnOutsider I vote that all female usernames appear in bright pink.
Apr 24, 2013
mknox No gender stereotypes here
I am going to have to get something for my center area at some point. I've already got it near overflowing with crap and it's starting to look messy. I took most of the stuff from my last car's center console, door pockets and seat-back pockets and put it in tupperware bins in the frunk. At some point, I'm going to have to go through that stuff to see what I really need to keep in the car.

DLM270 So, back on topic....any idea when the Opportunity Console will be available, and how much it will cost?
May 9, 2013
bonnie Nope. That's why we all meandered off-topic. Tesla said 'summer'. That's all we know.
May 9, 2013
brianman And as we all learned, summer means something like spring of next year.
May 11, 2013
DrTaras Though I agree with you that 'summer' probably is not before 9/21/13, and since you are a super-poster and all-knowing... can you tell me where we "learned" that? Did they make a new announcement about the center console?

May 11, 2013
jerry33 The Tesla Store now has "coming soon", rather than "this summer".
May 11, 2013
brianman Heh @ super-poster. Definitely not all-knowing. Or even mostly-knowing. But thanks.
Let me go dig it up in the way back machine...moment...
Update: Way back machine was useless. Google + TMC was fruitful though:
Model S design studio is up
"PACKAGES: coming this winter"
"OPTIONS: coming this winter"
"INTERIOR: coming this winter"
This phrasing "next" and "this" <season> were used frequently on the TeslaMotors.com website and were usually 1-5 seasons overly optimistic.
May 12, 2013
DrTaras And yet the Tesla minyans, many of whom are quite bright, somehow have clouded judgement when it comes to a repeated case of over-promise & under-deliver!
What did VFX used to have as his signature, "Mundus vult decipi (ergo decipiatur)!"
May 24, 2013
