Doug, that wheel doesn't look the same. That looks like a 2 or 3 piece wheel, but the 'Model S' prototype looks like a 1 piece.

They are Lorinser Wheels. They are R8 wheels (basically the single piece version) instead of the LM6 wheels posted.

    New Model S picture

    http://peakoilgarage.com/2009/02/20/new-update-from-tesla-motors-on-the-model-s/

I just got an email from Tesla Motors and it contained this sneak preview picture of the Model S.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response from customers since we provided a teaser photo last week, we decided to offer a special opportunity to you the early adopters of the Roadster. You have been instrumental in our early success, and we appreciate your continued passion and belief in Teslas vision.

Instead of waiting until March 26 to reserve a Model S Signature Series, you may reserve one now for a $40,000 refundable reservation fee. There will be 1000 Signature Series sedans each for US and Europe delivery. As with the Roadster Signature Series, your vehicle production number is a function of when the reservation payment is received.

At the launch party, well open reservations for the Model S Signature Series and the regular Model S sedans to everyone. According to our current production plan, only the Signature series is expected to be delivered in 2011, with regular production starting in 2012. Roadster owners will receive a $10,000 discount off the final sales price of the Signature Series Model S.

Please call us at 650-413-6300 or email us at [emailprotected] for details and a reservation agreement. The Model S aspires to become the automotive icon of the 21st century a gorgeous yet practical electric vehicle that will liberate even more drivers from oil addiction.

That makes it look like there is a VERY large sunroof or Glass roof. Also a very large rear window

That effectively ends the argument over whether it is a station wagon, lol.

The styling is very much like the Rapide. A closer look should tell how much rear head room it has (the main issue with these coupe-like sedan/hatchbacks).

Also, this variation shows they did something a bit strange to the windscreen/windshield:

But other than that - it's not a wagon. Woohoo! (cue Homer Simpson style dance around the room )

So we all got excited by the pictures and haven't talked about specs.

Any word on the spec level of these Signature 1000 cars? Will they be available in 160 to 300 mile versions or just top spec versions? $40k seems to a lot to put down for a car that will nominally have a $57,500 base price, so I presume that these will all be the latter.

$60k deposit for a Roadster expected to be around $120k delivered.
$40k deposit for a Model S expected to be around $80k delivered.

    Makes sense to me.
  • Feb 22, 2009
    Palpatine
The people in the Roadster signature 100 series put down 100% of the cost upfront. I think it was $100,000 for everything. Maybe someone else can confirm. Then for Roadsters after 100 the deposit was less.

So while $40,000 is a lot for the deposit on the Sedan sig 1,000 series, it is likely not the regular deposit for 1,001 and beyond. That deposit will likely be smaller at $10,000 to $20,000. The universe of customers, willing to make a large deposit, is limited.

Aptera seems to have stalled out at 4,000 orders with only a $500 deposit. But that is just California. I have been hearing 4,000 orders on the Aptera for about 8 months since I put mine in.

I am predicting that after the first 1000 cars the deposit will be about $5000. Many of the people buying a Model S will actually need a loan to buy it. And no Car in hand = no loan.
  • Feb 23, 2009
    dpeilow
Exactly. I'm wondering what kind of finance options Tesla might be able to offer. This might be a good long term money spinner for them. Is it too late to access the bank bailouts, as GM did with their finance arm?

Guilty as charged ! I did pick up the phone when I saw the email. I was told that they would email me a reservation agreement on Monday, which they did. I dropped it off in person in San Carlos that same day along with a check. Now, all I have to do is wait 2 1/2 years and maybe I'll get a car...
  • Feb 24, 2009
    Kevin Harney
How much was the required deposit ?
  • Feb 24, 2009
    Laurent
    The deposit is $40k.
If you cancel, you lose 1% ($400). If Tesla goes under, you lose 100% :frown:

I'll be curious to know how many orders they have by the time March 26 comes around.
  • Feb 24, 2009
    Kevin Harney
I thought I read that but wasn't sure if it was speculation or fact. Did they say what the deposit would be after the signature 1000 ?

Did they have enough info for you to pick any options yet ?

Are all of the Sig 1000's simply LOADED ?
  • Feb 24, 2009
    ChargeIt!
Deposit after first 1,000 Signature Series (there's also a small Founder's Series) is $5k. I think you can reserve a non-signature vehicle now ... but not sure.

$10k discount applies ONLY TO SIGNATURE SERIES (which will likely be priced higher that non-signature cars) for "registered owner of a Tesla Roadster" (at the time of delivery of Model S (a subtle but important detail)).

    Can't pick options yet ...

Not sure if Signature Series is LOADED ... but I strongly doubt it ... reason ( I suspect ) is they still don't have enough firm idea about pricing. So ... other than special badging, there's no way to know yet what options MIGHT BE included vis-a-vis non-signature car.
  • Feb 24, 2009
    vfx

So the discount is on the upcharge?
  • Feb 24, 2009
    ChargeIt!
"So the discount is on the upcharge?"

I guess it all depends on how you look at it ... I was at first happy to see TM/Elon give a $10k discount to existing Roadster Owners for loyalty (the long delays, risk, etc) in communications made a few weeks ago. But then finding out it only applies to those who once again take a HUGE leap of faith (another 2 years, $40k risk, unknown (?"volatile"-last-minute?) pricing and options, etc) kind of cooled any enthusiasm.

TM, of course, has learned from past mistakes. And they must run a viable, profitable business. And they are entitled to that. But the (apparent) tactics behind it kind of chase away the warm fuzzy feelings ...

If you want to support Tesla by ordering one of the 1,000 Signature Series you get the $10k discount if you are a registered owner of a Roadster at delivery time. You are paying for an exclusive specially badged car. For the privilege of getting the special badging, and MAY BE some extra options that get bundled (or may be not ... they haven't said yet) you will be paying extra. How much extra are you paying ? Who knows ... it still depends on what will be included. How much extra are you willing to pay extra ? That's a personal choice ... And if you are willing to do all that to own something exclusive, THEN you get $10k off.

So ... it all depends on how you look at it and what your personal preferences are.

But in my opinion EVERY 2008 Roadster investor that's risked his/her $$$ and waited a LONG time (in some case 2 1/2 years), and maybe even 2009 Roadster deliveries, should get the $10k discount on a Signature Model S WITHOUT the at-time-of-delivery-registration requirement if they put up another at-risk-$40k-deposit now.

At least (so far) a Roadster owner can still get to the head of the line for non-signature Model S with a $5k deposit. That's some consolation.
  • Feb 24, 2009
    Palpatine
I have already emailed and asked about that. I want to buy #1,001 and only put down $5,000 for it.

In fact I think waiting makes sense, to allow production to work out the kinks.
The first few Roadsters had issues with the transmission and the carbon fiber body panels not fitting properly. I am thinking that everything should be running smoothly by #1,001.

At $5,000 I also won't have so much money at risk in case Tesla Motors doesn't make it.

More fuel for the discussion of how people are sometimes apparently mistakenly going faster than the brakes can handle.
Zero miles to the gallon sounds odd / bad. Like even "worse" than 1 MPG. I am tempted to say infinite miles to the gallon, but zero is actually technically correct unless we venture into MPGe.
In theory I suppose. Has *anyone* ever actually powered their house from a Roadster? This statement in a story might get some potential customers to think it is ready to go as a backup power source for power outages.
Well, there is faint amount of "motor" whine. Most people like it.
I would have put "manageable" in quotes there!
Apparently the reporter wasn't explained the difference between Tesla and SpaceX.

Yeah, I hear the user interface will have lots of cool features. Unfortunately, this author is a bit confused. Start the motor?? I suppose he wants to make sure it's "warmed up." He also doesn't seem to know the difference between SpaceX and Tesla.

  • Mar 9, 2009
    mt2
That's what I meant by "fast and loose". Aptera hasn't delivered any production models, so Tesla might feel they can state they are the only one with a GPS that shows charging stations.

Off topic, I know, but I wonder if the Model S will show the "greenest route" like the Aptera GPS does.
  • Mar 9, 2009
    TEG
Well Tesla hasn't delivered any customer vehicles with that functionality and it seems Aptera is on track to deliver some of their cars before Model S. So Aptera may well be the first production vehicle on the road with that technology.
  • Mar 9, 2009
    Palpatine
There is nothing stopping Tesla from putting that technology in a Roadster now. It sounds like a software update for the GPS.
  • Mar 9, 2009

It has already sold to a customer for $60,000. If I wanted to spend another $8,000 on batteries it would be really close to 200 miles of range.

The interior shot was taken with a different camera on March 23. A bunch of people on flickr seem suspicious of the screen in the interior shot. They cite a lack of glare from the screen on the surrounding bezel - but if you notice around the instrument display there is glare only to a point, then none on the bezel that extends around the large screen.

By the way, the dark gray one they teased us with is obviously an earlier prototype. The new ones (white, silver) look much more production ready and evolved.

Well, I'd bet the larger frontal area of the Model S actually makes it use more energy to push through the air than the Roadster with its smaller frontal area (even considering Roadster's higher Cd).

I think the boot up front is the bit I hadn't expected. That is very handy. Two places to spread my crap/stuff/things and it means I can keep the rear hatch completely empty and keep the toolbox, first aid kit and other assorted stuff in the front. Very flexible... I like....
I only need a Euro price now.... and I'd like to get some idea of how much the car will cost with the extras I want :)

    So what is it?
244 miles for the Roadster with 53 kWh
160 miles for the S with 42 kWh

So the Roadster is about 20% more efficient per mile than the S if I did my math right. That seems about right given the size and weight difference even if you credit the S for having a better CD.

I had questioned the front boot several months ago and am glad to see they included it. I wish I could see the front boot open and I wish I could see the third row of seats. I am liking everything that I have read so far. And I am pretty sure that I can overlook the grill. I do like the black grill better than the chrome one. It just makes it look smaller. I was sort of hoping that there might be no grill just smooth body. Nice list of stats from Autoblog. Very informative.

I find this quote from the Autoblog article regarding the Model S battery pack VERY intriguing:

"They expect replacement battery packs to come in at "well under $5000" according to Elon."

I am hopeful that means Roadster owners can also expect battery pack costs to be well south of the 20 to 30K that has been speculated? I know the packs are different, but if battery technology has advanced to the degree that such a statement can be made for the Model S, I would think it benefits Roadster owners, too.

And what about the 12K option for battery replacement for Roadster buyers? If I had signed up for that (I didn't), this could cause me to rethink that decision.

I am guessing that with 3 range numbers there will actually be 3 batteries in some cars and two in others and 1 in the 160 mile base car. So 5,000 x 3 batteries. That is just the marketing guy in me talking ....
