cinergi I think you may be right. The garage door opener I have to use for the common garage I park at home in doesn't work through the windshield. I've often been able to get it to work in that same area you mention ... but sometimes I just have to roll my window down in order to get it to work :frown:

Oct 18, 2012
Soflauthor My handheld garage door unit absolutely does NOT transmit through the windshield, but it works fine through the side windows.
Not sure of the software version, but it was updated last Sunday, so I'm assuming it's the most recent version. It's a unique warning sound (sort of "bing-bong" repeated until you correct) and occurs when the car is moving slowly with one foot on the accel and another on the brake.

donauker EasyPass works perfectly right below the mirror mount.
Doesn't work on either side. Wonder what they do about that when you have no plate?

pguerra If the windshield is shielded and since the Model S ineloquently does not have power folding mirrors and yet costs 100 thousand ridiculous dollars, my solution to open the garage door with my remote will be to 1) roll down the window, 2) stick my hand out with the remote and push the button, and 3) pull in the driver's side view mirror so I can park into my garage.
Isn't this supposed to be a "high-tech" car? It's honestly almost laughable.

donauker Agreed, I have no problem with this. I have never mounted my EzPass due to infrequent use and multiple vehicles and I have no problem placing the unit as needed. Doubt I would even need to look anymore to place it properly.
Yes it was an option, at least on the 08 but I believe it is a different coating. I did have this option and never had any real problem with the EzPass in any location whereas in the S it will definitely not read even when slowing to a crawl if it is not in the correct spot.

I've got quite the list of things going that I'm sharing with the ownership and service teams. All minor -- to me at least. And that includes some of the items you mention. However, the car itself is just SO AWESOME that it trumps these things. I practically don't care about them. I LOVE the car and how it drives. That's the most important thing to me. cinergi Here ya go

Sorry, couldn't resist. I empathize with everyone here who's feeling let down, irritated, etc. Because I was really beginning to lose it. And I haven't even shared everything that I went through. I'm much happier now that I have the car. I have battle-wounds ... and I'm in constant contact with a few Tesla folks who directly control and influence training, the delivery process, post-delivery ownership experiences, etc. And they're taking my feedback to heart. And it's because I'm having a very open, painful, but constructive conversation with them. Now, some of this is probably because I owned a Roadster and have previous contacts inside Tesla. Some of what I've had has been the result of (what I think was) a well-worded long email to George with the sole purpose of informing him of what I went through so 1) he would be aware and 2) would have the details he needed to improve the process. I didn't ask for anything, I didn't flame anyone, etc. It was all a "I know you're trying and care deeply, but this XYZ blah blah stuff I went through sucks, and I wanted you to know. Let me know if I can be of further assistance."
Anyway, veering off topic here ...
Oct 18, 2012
KBF And I for one am grateful that you are doing that, cinergi! Open, honest, and careful communication with constructive criticism will only make Tesla better, and for many of us conflict is too often avoided. Conflict in itself is not bad, it's the way one acts during conflict that makes a difference. Since many of us do not have contacts we need people like you to represent us customers (and, ahem, put in a word for us info-starved Canucks, eh? :biggrin

All my cars (with folding mirrors, manual or automatic) I could roll down the window and fold the driver's side in very easily. Is that not the case with the Model S.

dsm363 This is the best car I've ever owned without a doubt. Granted, I've never owned anything nicer than a Volvo S80 (in terms of a sedan) though. Things have not rolled out smoothly as I'd have liked but they are working around the clock. I received two e-mails last night from Tesla after 11PM and when I replied, they responded back. They are basically working around the clock.
I could make a list like that for almost any car. Homelink worked fine for me. No squeaky pano roof. Have you seen the glove compartment? You're describing the Roadster's glovebox, not the Model S. It is fairly big and can fit the manuals, sunglasses in a case...etc
You've got great people up there in Chicago to take care of you when you get your car. Most of these issues you've listed should be addressed by the time you get your car anyway. It's the people up front who are dealing with most of these.

Bifff67 Just to add again for the EZ Pass: I went to the local EZ Pass place and indeed it fails through the glass but he said try it up in the black paint to the right of the mirror and it works. contaygious Anyone tried sticking it into the frunk?
Oct 27, 2012
Ceilidh I have a related question with a possible different solution to this issue.
I live in the SF Bay area and we have FasTrak but both FasTrak and EZ Pass have an option for in-car windshield mount or external front license units.
I have always thought that those plastic squares were hideously ugly inside the car, and from outside the car you can see the adhesive strips through the glass which is even uglier IMHO. In fact, this bothers me much more than the external stickers that let you drive in the HOV lanes as a single occupant, but that's just my perception.
Anyway, I was surfing the web looking for another solution to this problem as the way I want to mount my front license the transponder wont really work in that location for me. I also don't want to uglify the windshield or deal with the placement issues everyone here has been discussing.
I found a Jeep forum where someone had taken the external unit and mounted it with plastic zip ties to some interior framing under a plastic panel at the front bumper. This made it invisible which is nice because people won't be tempted to steal it if they can't see it.
This got me thinking about the black plastic front bumper piece on the Model S. Does anybody know what is behind it? Is there a place where one could zip tie an external transponder in that location? Seems like it would be the perfect solution to this issue if it worked.
If anyone has any knowledge about this let us all know.
Cheers.

markwj The equivalent here works in the frunk of the roadster, but that is through the carbon fibre bonnet (aluminum on the Model S).

strider Yes, I did this in my Corvette. I posted in another thread, maybe soflauthor's?. It should work assuming we can get access to the plastic nose cone.
Oct 27, 2012
teslasuperfan I was told there is a small access panel on the black nose cone. It is to the right of the chrome Tesla T badge. The panel is nicely camouflaged and not easily visible, but it is there. You can pry it out with a flat head screw driver. Maybe this is a good place to mount RFID devices?

SUN-day Driver I have a radar detector I mount in my old car just above the dash to the left of the driver. Will the windshield coating prevent it from detecting radar (K, KA and LASER), or receiving GPS (it warns when approaching the coordinates of a red light camera in its database) in the Model S? If anyone has used a radar detector with the Model S I'm very interested to hear if the windshield coating caused any problem. On a related note to the radar detector, I have it hardwired into an internal fuse box in my old car (at the end of the dash, with access facing the driver's side door). Is there an interior fuse box in the Model S? If they published a user manual I'd be able to find out...
Oct 29, 2012
JAG There is a 12 volt battery for accessories so you should be able to tap into that for your radar. I have a Valentine V1 and am also concerned about the transmission through the glass as Valentine says certain coatings lessen the warning range. I was thinking I might have to try and fit it where the transponder is and fit the transponder somewhere else. I test drove the Model S performance with my Valentine V1 and it gave a few falses...mostly mounted low on windshield. So some signal certainly is getting through but I don't know if all of it is getting through. As for red light cams.. I do not have that feature but use the app WAZE on my iPhone to warn of visible police and red light cams... But these reports are made by other "WAZERS" like myself and hence don't work well on empty roadways.

v12 to 12v There is some discussion about radar detectors here: Valentine One radar detector installation
Oct 31, 2012
SUN-day Driver Thanks, that thread is helpful.
Is it only the front windshield that has this coating? If so I think the radar detector would still be useful for when the radar source is to the side (even slightly) or behind the car. And if the source is directly in front, some signal would probably get in from bouncing around the surroundings. My Escort seems very sensitive to even the faintest bit of signal.

dsm363 Could someone post a picture of where exactly they placed their EZpass (or TxTag) on the windshield and if they have confirmed it works? I understand to the right of the rearview mirror in the black coated area is the place (to the right if you are sitting in the driver's seat). Thanks.

Nov 26, 2012
unclfuzzy I don't have a way to post a pic right now, but there is a clear visual difference to the right of the rear-view mirror mount. EZ-Pass worked for me when held in that space. I ended up getting a license plate mounted transponder so didn't mount it there permanently.
Nov 26, 2012
mkertzman I tried two different Bay Area FasTrak transponders in two locations - in the black area to the right of the mirror and directly under the mirror mount and it didn't work in either location with either transponder on FasTrak lanes on the Golden Gate Bridge. I consulted Tesla Ownership Experience and was advised that I should consider an external mount (on top of the front license plate). Since I had already gotten the front license plate bracket, I did get an external transponder and it works fine, although it does nothing to increase the attractiveness of the front license plate! I have no idea why the windshield locations seems to work for some cars and not for others....

Dec 6, 2012
aviators99 Currently, this is the only problem I have with the car that is a serious problem for me. I have two transponders, one for the tolls here, and one for the community where I live. Neither of them is working at the spot discussed in this thread. Here in Florida we do not have front license plates, and even if we did, it wouldn't work because we also have "Express lanes" where you pay using a transponder to use them -- unless you are driving an EV, in which case it is free. If the transponder is there, you will be charged, whether you are supposed to be or not. So mounting it out of disabling reach will not work (or will cost more). This thread has been quiet for a while. Any new successes????

ElSupreme I don't know about where you live but camera based plate readers are typically more reliable than the RFID tags. In Atlanta they are using camera based plate readers as the primary method, and RFID tag reads as a secondary method of determining your car.
They stopped giving out powered RFID tags when they did this and moved to the sticker passive variety. They use the same technology as Texas's EZ Pass, but they are not running on compatible systems.
Dec 19, 2012
Electric Machete In Florida they will use the license plate as a backup in case they miss the RFID tag. My main concern is toll booths that have an automatic gate that should go up if it detects the SunPass. These are becoming fewer as time goes on, but for now I still have to deal with them occasionally.

Electric Machete I might use that option to mount my development's RFID gate pass if I find it doesn't work on the windshield.
However in Florida, I am eligible to use the HOV lane as well as 95 Express. 95 Express is two lanes that require a fee to use it unless you are a registered carpool or hybrid/electric vehicle. In the case of the Model S, I would need to shield my RFID tag/SunPass as I pass through to avoid being charged, so I need access to the pass. Once the pass is shielded they record the plate and I will be in the database as an electric vehicle, thus won't be charged for using the lanes. It's a convoluted process no doubt, but that's Florida.

Charged_Up For what it's worth, I finally found a place that the SunPass (in Florida) worked - at least a couple of times. It is right below the mirror mound (directly below the center) with the pass just into the clear part of the windshield below the black part of the mirror mount.
Regards... Keith

aviators99 Are you saying that the whole pass is in the clear part, or just a piece of it is in the clear part? Also, can you describe the orientation of the SunPass (and which type you are using)?
Dec 21, 2012
steve841 He's describing pretty much the pic I previously posted....
Dec 21, 2012
aviators99 I'm not sure that's what he's describing. Your picture is off the windshield, and it's not clear from his description whether his is or not. Also, he didn't describe which SunPass he is using. In any case, I have matched your picture several times and gotten nothing. I'm trying to figure out whether or not I have a defective windshield or not.

Charged_Up I'll try to get you a picture tomorrow...

Bifff67 So a few months ago I found that the the black spot area beside the mirror worked well for the VA EZ Pass. Then I cracked the windshield and had it replaced. That spot no longer works. Testing done at the VDOT location in Herndon. So correct, some windshields do and some don't. In re-reading the thread, I never tried the area below the mirror, will try that sometime.

Charged_Up Here's the location from the inside - worked three out of four times last week....

Robert.Boston Another data point: my EZPass has been working without issue mounted on the dotted area to the right of the rear-view mirror attachment point. I did, however, have to get a fresh EZPass transponder, as the battery in my old one was too weak.

CarlE_P439 EZ Pass?
I was just looking at the EZ Pass webpage in order to change the make/model of my car. And guess what? No Tesla!?!? There is the option of "Other" which seems really lame. Anyone else find Tesla as an option?
Jan 15, 2013
kinddog yea i was just looking thru Virginia's "Clean Special Fuel" plates so i can use the I-66 HOV lanes.... there's the Tesla Roadster, but no Model S.

spatterso911 Not using Tesla software controls.
Try this, though.

NJS1207 I used "other" when registering the Model S with EZ Pass in New Jersey. Definitely lame, but I don't see any way it will impact the service. I give them 12 months to figure it out. Anyone interested in the under?
Jan 16, 2013
Tempus can't use it on the I-66 HOV lanes anymore anyway. Unless you have one of those OLDER plates that was grandfathered in.
Jan 16, 2013
kinddog yea... have that old tag on my Prius now... would like to transfer that tag to the Model S when i get it...
Jan 16, 2013
aviators99 Finally solved my problem. Florida has come out with a new form factor of Sunpass, called "SunPass Slim". It is approximately 5" x 1". It works on my windshield if mounted directly below the center of the mirror mount. None of the others worked in that spot (or anywhere else, for me).

tdelta1000 Hey aviators99,
Do you think that the new SunPass has better electronics which explains why it's a better solution?
Jan 18, 2013
aviators99 Well, I think I spoke too soon. It's only working about 50% of the time, unfortunately. It just happened that it worked at the first two places, so I jumped to a conclusion. I will try a few more different places.
Jan 19, 2013
steve841 Quit worrying about it ... Just make sure your tag is up to date on Sunpass and they will charge your account automatically with no fees.

retinadoc For those in NY/NJ look under Green Tag. Model S is listed and we even gat a discount.

ahimberg I was just looking at the Good To Go info for WA's pass info, they have some customer centers you can go to and test if you pass is in a working location. But they also have a PDF that tells you if your windshield is metalized and you should get the license plate mounted tag instead. The PDF says license plate tag is required, and they list the model X

Tesla
Model S All Metallized Windshield LPP Required. Windshield prevents use of Standard Pass
Model X All Metallized Windshield LPP Required. Windshield prevents use of Standard Pass
Roadster All Metallized Windshield LPP Required. Windshield prevents use of Standard Pass
guess I need a different pass type. The other question is what to do until license plates arrive since the pass mounts on the plate instead of the windshield... free tolls for a awhile? -- nevermind, see the directions are it mounts using the screw holes for the plate so no plate required to install.

Jcmason @Retinadoc Thanks for the tip, but I can't seem to find Green Tag on the E-Z Pass site. Could you provide a link please? Thanks.

Electric Machete There could still be an issue when trying to go through a sunpass toll plaza that has a gate. These are fewer and fewer these days but they still exist.
Jan 21, 2013
gg_got_a_tesla My FasTrak transponder didn't work yesterday through the 92 toll plaza when placed in the exact same spot. Don't know how they'll track down this violation given that there are no plates yet on the car... Can their cameras zoom in and capture the tiny temporary registration sticker or the VIN number, I wonder?!
Not sure what I can do different through the carpool lane of the 84 Dumbarton toll plaza tomorrow morning short of sticking my hand out through the window (no pano roof) - crossing this bridge through the carpool lane is my daily ritual. Maybe, under the mirror mount instead of to the right?!
I may just have to bite the bullet and order and mount that fugly front license plate transponder. Yuck!
Jan 21, 2013
William13 I use it successfully straight under the rear view mirror mount cheating to the passenger side of center.
I think manufacturing tolerances vary in different cars.
Jan 21, 2013
shokunin I intend to remove the nose cone and somehow secure the license transponder within that area. Assuming it works should be a win win. No white square transponder velcroed to the windshield. Too bad they can't make some kind of transponder for the hov lanes instead of the stickers
