patp One thing I really do not like on Model S (and my other previous cars) is that the license plate is illuminated by yellowish incandescent bulbs while the rest of car is total LED.
As anyone replaced them with something whiter (LEDs or superwhite bulbs)? Also, what's the bulb type?
Jan 12, 2013
vcor Last week I went over looking at every LED I could find on the Model S to get a lamp count, and noticed this too. I suspect they either couldn't source a LED bulb in time, the LEDs had directional problems, or ones they got were unsatisfactory in some other way, so they went with incandescent. It's a 36mm Festoon bulb. My 2007 LS460 has LEDs for the license plate, so it was surprising to see this on the Tesla.
I'll likely replace mine too. Strange that such a minor thing is bothersome, but no reflection on Tesla - the incandescent does actually work. If this is the only complaint, they are doing a hell of a job!
Jan 12, 2013
araxara Yes, I have replaced my license plate bulbs in my Model S with LEDs. The bulbs are 36mm Festoon type (long skinny). I bought a pair of LEDs from eBay. The only "issue" I had was that the LEDs were 1.5W each and produced way more light than the stock bulbs. Since they are unidirectional, I rotated them a little. I've since ordered some LED bulbs that are 1W each - unfortunately, my car is being serviced and I can't replace the bulbs with the 1W ones yet. Here is a link to the 1W bulbs I bought:
2 Super Bright White LED License Plate Lights 1.5" Festoon 6418 C5W 1 WATT
You need to be careful with these LEDs, since they have a metal body. The clips in the license plate light housing that hold them could potentially short out. I covered the LED light housing ends with electrical tape which was appropriately hollow punched.

Jan 12, 2013
Babylonfive Was there a clear plate over that location?
Jan 12, 2013
araxara Yes. That's a picture of the LED light mounted in the housing. There is a clear water tight cover that is screwed into place. I was just trying to show the LED held into the clips (which can cause a short if the bulb is not properly insulated). Actually, when removing the clear housing, there are plastic clips on the housing that clip to the ends of the bulb and make it easier to remove.
Here is an image with the LED bulb held in place by the plastic clips. Note that there is no insulation installed yet on the bulb ends:

Jan 13, 2013
Al Sherman Would you mind showing a pic with the insulation on?
Jan 13, 2013
efusco araxara, could you show a photo of exactly where you put the electrical tape? I'm a tad confused about what contact areas are of concern.
Jan 13, 2013
araxara Sorry for the confusion. I've updated the photos on the original reply.
My shorting concern is probably overblown: Both pins are insulated from the body (checked this visually and with a continuity meter). If the LEDs were to slide on the clips that hold them in place, one of the clips would touch the body. But the other clip would be sufficiently away from the body, so there is no shorting potential. I just wanted the peace of mind.
Here is a more detailed image of the LED bulb (1 Watt bulb shown) which may help illustrate the problem:

Jan 13, 2013
efusco Ok, that's kind of what I thought you were saying and it makes sense to add a little extra insulation. The new photos really clarify that quite a lot. Thank you very much. I've ordered the 1W bulbs and look forward to installing them.
Jan 13, 2013
swegman The link provided by Araxara indicates these are 1W bulbs in the heading. However, reading the specs in the ad states they are 2W each. Has anyone received these bulbs yet to confirm their actual wattage, and whether the brightness is correct? Thanks.
Jan 13, 2013
mknox So,how many extra miles of range does this mod give you?
Jan 13, 2013
jerry33 If the OE bulb is 10W and the LED is 2W (based on the text rather than the title) you gain 8W, at 300 Wh/m you will get one mile for every 37.5 hours of driving with the lights on.
Jan 13, 2013
vcor Since there are two bulbs required, you should gain 16 W (10W - 2W)*2 = 16 W. This means you get 2 miles per 37.5 hours of driving!
Or at $0.14/KW hour for electricity, you'll save $8.75 for every 1000 hours your lights are on.
These are the kinds of big savings I live for! Use 1W bulbs and save even more (although not much more).
Jan 13, 2013
Jeeps17 I wonder why Tesla went old-school with these bulbs.
Notwithstanding the energy savings noted above, I find that LEDs in that position look substantially better at night that incandescents (IMHO). They really do stand out from the crowd in traffic.
Jan 13, 2013
jerry33 I assume they did it to save a few bucks, or perhaps they couldn't get a reliable supply at the time they were finalizing the design. They didn't go with LED headlights either.

aneusomy I'm wondering if I have the same problem. My P85 is just over 2 months old. I bought LEDs from VLEDS as others have suggested on this forum (6K light). After a few weeks one LED "blew". I exchanged the pair. Now I thought another one has "blown" except I see it working intermittently. I've no background in electric/mechanical/etc, so not sure what to do. Tesla doesn't want to test the wiring or anything to see if it's a problem with the car. It seems randomly to come back on then off; not sure how to reproduce or provoke it. Anyone have any ideas?

Dec 14, 2014
aneusomy Hi guys,
In case any one else is having issues with intermittent license plates lights (LED -- specifically the VLEDs, see my post above where my right plate light sometimes comes back to life) -- maybe I'm one of a few isolated cases -- I thought I'd write down what I've done that I think fixed it, if it may help anyone else:
I tried using electrical tape along the rim of the LED wall where the (thin) insulator strip is, thinking that the light socket metal pieces may be touching and shorting it (as someone else earlier in the thread also suggested).
Not sure if this specifically fixed things, but upon placing the lights back into the socket they worked fine.
So I then put the screws back into the plastic pieces and tightened them in position, figuring job done, and to my surprise now both lights weren't working. I loosened the screws a bit and both lights came back on.
Not sure why this is an issue, but it appears you can't tighten them all the way or something doesn't fall in place (?) properly and so my lights didn't work.
I'll keep an eye to see if the lights now work properly.
Dec 14, 2014
scaesare Also, I'm not sure of the situation with some other brands of LED lamp replacements, but the ones I got from Amazon felt just a hair loose in the bulb socket... as if the replacement was slightly shorter.
I wound a strip of electrical tape around the edge/side of the socket assembly once the lamp was installed, thus "cinching it down" a bit before screwing the unit back in to the liftgate.
Dec 14, 2014
pete8314 I was hoping to have my LED bulb set for sale by now, but shipping is so slow at this time of year. I'll post here when they come in (within the next week I think), but they're designed exclusively for the Model S, in terms of size (exact match for the OEM bulb) and color (same temperature as the front fog lights). They're also a higher-quality type of LED bulb (genuine Cree) sourced from a Taiwanese manufacturer that supplies other major automotive brands, and have built-in insulator pads and polarity indicators. They've been tested in a handful of Model S's in most climates with a zero failure rate, but they're covered with an unconditional 2-year guarantee anyway.

Paul Carter Usually notice it when I unlock with the back in sight. My VLEDs are on the blink now too. Will try and see if I can try the tape/loosening..Thx for the tips all!
Dec 16, 2014
aneusomy I tried the electrical tape (see pictures) on my VLEDs but one bulb still seems to blink out.
If you compare these bulbs to the standard filament bulb that came with the car, they are bulkier (the LED and walls protude out) so I wondered if this was the cause of it shorting out somewhere. So, I wrapped the sides to prevent the sides of the bulb from touching the socket holders; and also the top portion of the bulbs because I noticed at the deep in the socket there is a metal piece, and wondered if when the plastic bulb holder / bulb was in, it would touch the metal and short.
Regardless, made no difference.
In the end, I wonder about the fit of these bulbs, if it's the bulbs themselves that have issues, or just that the Tesla socket sucks. It may be I give up and just try a different brand.

Dec 19, 2014
aneusomy Hi
I got the car Sept 30; got the VLEDs about a week later. I've paid attention to the polarity. I think initially I assumed everything was OK, so I wasn't really paying attention. But about a month later I noticed one light (I think the right) was off when I unlocked the car while standing behind the car. I thought that bulb was defective -- even switched it to the other socket, didn't work -- so I exchanged it fairly quickly. I didn't really test it rigorously. But I figured the problem was solved once the bulb was replaced. But then I started having problems again about a week later with the new one -- my left light. But this time I was too busy to rush and exchange it, and oddly the thing randomly turned back on, which is when I started figuring that it's a loose connection or the bulb is flaky.
On the one hand, my delivery specialist said that the Model S seems to have an issue with the LEDs (didn't expand on it); he himself had problems with LEDs for his plate that kept turning on/off. He seemed to try different brands and found something local which seems to have worked for some time now (he said "fingers crossed").
Anyway, when these lights work, they're nice. The interesting thing is that really it's always the same side bulb that's not working this time (the left); and last time (the right), so I wonder about the bulb. The first time I exchanged the bulbs, I exchanged *BOTH* (the "defective" one and the good one)-- wish I kept the good one to see test if it's a bulb issue (maybe they have a quality control issue).
Uggh. Eventually I may just go replace the ? flaky bulb and see if things work; will reply once I do.

Jan 12, 2015
pete8314 Following up on this, they're now available, with installation instructions here.
Jan 13, 2015
Xenoilphobe grab some aluminum foil and beef it up -- it will be tighter and you won't have the intermittent issue.
Jan 13, 2015
sickfox Now I'm having the same LED issue with my VLED. My left side LED is not working intermittently. It weird because when I first turn on the car, both lights are working. After a few minutes of driving, it turns off. I did some tests - switched the LED to the right side (did not work), switch the white plastic that holds the LED with the LED to the right side (did not work), moved the right LED to the left side (works). So I think in conclusion, I have a faulty LED.
Hopefully, the replacement LED will solve the problem. Will report back after a month or two. :crying:
Jan 16, 2015
aneusomy Hi all,
I thought I'd post an update, if anyone is interested.
So I continued having intermittent reliability issues with my VLEDs. Instead, I now got a set of LEDs from Abstract Ocean (http://www.abstractocean.com/led-licence-plate-bulb-kit/). I have had them over a week now, and all I can say is that they work beautifully and reliably. I am SUPER happy.
1. These bulbs worked right off the bat - no flickering, flakiness, "sensitivity" to how much I tightened/loosened the screws, or other non-sense. They. just. work. Funny thing is, out of habit I keep checking on them half-expecting one bulb to be off, but no, they keep working
2. They are just a tad brighter than the VLEDs.. fantastic.
3. They give off nice white light and look great. Just a touch warmer in colour than the VLEDs, but I think it looks better this way and matches the backup/reverse white LED lights.
If anyone is interested, I can post some pictures of the lights working. BTW, if it makes any difference, my P85 was delivered Sept 30 2014.
In the mean time, here's a comparison photo of the VLEDs (the "rounder" bulb) and the bad boys from Abstract Ocean (the "block" bulb). Notice the thick white insulation at the sides! (The VLED bulb has black insulator tape that I stuck on, to no avail).

One did fail, though, and I just replaced it.
Jan 16, 2015
pete8314 I guess that technically they're a refinement on the basic design, but they are an entirely different bulb and manufacturer. I tried the AGT ones, but as they state on the listing, the all-metal body makes them susceptible to shorting. Also, 36mm is not quite the right dimension to match the OEM bulbs, and 6k doesn't quite match the other LED lamps on the car. All small details, but that's what makes us special

Jan 16, 2015
trils0n The AGT bulbs I got over a year and a half ago have been flawless. I got the 36mm and they seemed to fit perfectly. What is the correct dimension? They have little plastic insulator rings as well -- are they not sufficient to prevent shorting?
Jan 17, 2015
pete8314 Not sure about the insulator ring, I'm just going by what they mention in their Amazon listing:
36 is a little short, but based on a sample of around 12 OEM bulbs, there's quite a wide tolerance in these things.

breser I'm not Pete but my 85D I picked up a week ago still had incandescent license plate lamps. I'd bet money that Tesla is just buying a part that includes the bulb from someone. Sogorman +1 for the guys over at Abstract Ocean. Swapped out the standard incandescent bulbs for their LED replacements on my S85 yesterday. Easy as pie, and looks great.
Feb 25, 2015
pete8314 It is true, I'm not sure why, always wondered that on my other cars as well, Tesla isn't alone in putting LEDs almost everywhere, except the license plate. The size of festoon bulb they're using is particularly standard either, so I'm sure it comes from a parts bin, presumably Mercedes, but finding the equivalent size LED was not easy, none of the good OEMs produce them in bulk. Same bulb in use on the Roadster, apparently.
- - - Updated - - -
I think it's just an oversight on their part. I certainly don't have the volume they have, yet my bulbs are 100% designed for this specific application, nobody else has these bulbs). The downside is that margin is actually very thin (I know, I hear violins playing in the distance!), because I'm not able to order in volume (i.e. 10,000+ units).

breser Just to clarify, I'm assuming they'd need to get the manufacturer of the license plate lighting assembly they are using to change bulbs. That manufacturer probably wouldn't bother to do it for a few thousand assemblies. Getting a bulb made like you did is certainly a possibility for Tesla. But if the assembly is already together (as I'm assuming) and they have to change bulbs then they're paying for bulbs they don't need and they have to spend money on labor to change them. So I still think volume matters here.

razumny Has there been any word on why they have gone for incandescent bulbs on the mod. S? I gather the word is that the mod. X will ship with LEDs...

FlatSix911 There are only 4 incandesenent Edison bulbs on the Model S and all can easily be replaced with LEDs.
Two 36mm festoon bulbs above the license plate and two 168 bulbs inside the side turn signals.
