Car Care: @#)$(*!% Curb rash... part 1

The Lloyd's mats arrived today in a very large, heavy box. They were rolled up and nicely packed. I ended up ordering the tan for my Blue with tan interior Model S.

These are super high quality (I haven't seen any better), with a thick and very deep pile and a rubberized backing, with all of the edges very nicely finished. They beg driving with bare feet:)

Here are photos of the complete set, from the rear to the front of the car. With my reservation number I likely will not have my Model S until the spring so I could not photograph the mats in the car. I regret that but there's not much I could do.

Those look real nice. Is that Dark Tan (068), Light Tan (060) or Parchment (066)? I tried to get them to send me samples before my trip to Denver next week, where I will be seeing a Green/Tan Model S, but they never did send any, or respond to my follow-up emails.

Nice! Aren't you afraid of dirt though? Even my black ones got dirty over 4 years. Even a few spots would drive me bonkers,

Isn't the point of an aftermarket floor mat to catch the dirt? I don't understand the question I guess.

Could you PLEASE elaborate on the other questions. Clearly we have some interest in your decision and in buying them ourselves, but the web site you linked to does not list any Tesla floor mats. So you must've done something special to get the ones you have.

Please describe the process you used, what color you got, how you got the custom mats, what pile type you have and what you paid.

Try this link: Order Configurator : AutoMatStore.com In the drop down on the upper left, choose 2013 model year, then Tesla, then S. It then gives you the mat choices for the entire car. Colors can be seen on the lower segment of that page. I think the ebony is the best choice if you want a dark color compatible with the stock dark gray/black carpet liners. The blue might also be a good choice for those with blue cars. I almost chose that color myself.

The color I ordered is called Parchment (number 066). I paid $597.00 for the entire set, including shipping. See this thread for some of the colors pictured near the tan seats and stock carpet liner: Will after market mats be necessary or will the Tesla mats be up to snuff? - Page 2

Thanks, that helps, I kept looking under the 2012 model year since that's what Tesla calls it. Still can't find the Tesla even under 2013 at JC Whitney...

Glad to have the link to the other thread, it certainly sounds like it's worth being patient here and seeing what Tesla delivers. Would like to get some rubber mats of some sort to soak up all the slush from mud and snow season, but if the Tesla regular mats are adequate I'll probably just stick with those from my everyday use.

Thanks so much Artsci, I thought I was following this topic, but somehow I misses the pics of the samples in the Model S. The Parchment 066 is a perfect match for the tan...I'll be interested to see what Tesla has to offer by the time I take delivery. Otherwise these are looking pretty good.

    Anyone/Atsci-

Does the upholstery lining the floor of the cars match the leather, or is it all black? I can't recall. To Artsci specifically, if the upholstery lining the floor is black, why did you go with the matching tan mats v. black mats? (The mats look really solid, and unless the Tesla offerings are of substantial thickness and nicely branded, I'll probably go with Lloyds as well.)

Does anyone know if Lloyds (or others) is offering rubber winter floor mats?

    - - - Updated - - -

Taking these mats out and steam cleaning them shouldn't be a challenge.

    - - - Updated - - -

Also, the schematics of the mats on the AutoMatStore website look distinctly different from the actual ones you received and photographed. Did you notice this as well, or have I reached a page in error?
  • Oct 28, 2012
    artsci
The schematics are generic drawings and don't match the actual mat shapes for the Tesla.

I thought Tesla was going to offer new mats...
  • Oct 28, 2012
    shokunin
The interior carpet, regardless of leather color is black. If you order a tan leather, you will receive black floor mats from Tesla. Nothing wrong with getting matching leather/floor mats even though the carpet is black. It is surprising Tesla is not offering rear seat floor mats as the kids (my kids at least) will be making a mess back there.

I noticed they put holes for floor mat clips, yet so far I haven't seen any clips in the model S, just velcro.

$300 for the Tesla interior mats including tax and shipping. $112 all in from Autoanything for the Ultimats. Sorry, Tesla, I just can't pay you close to a $200 premium for these mats.

I just ordered a complete set of the standard grade mats from Lloyd. They are thinner than stock, but since I am duplicating the fronts, I will have two sets. The trunk, frunk and rear seats don't get anywhere near the wear so I tried cheaping out. With the free shipping and 15% discount from AutoAnything, it came to $220 delivered for front, rear, trunk and frunk. Now I need a Model S to put them in!

Update: The mats arrived in just 4 days. They are relatively thin, but quite respectable. They should work well everywhere but the front and I have the stock mats for that location. I hope they fit properly, but based on Lloyd's premium mats I expect to be OK. About 8 weeks till car delivery.

I'm considering going with Grey Lloyd's ULTIMAT to match the seats (and the black is soooo dark). Anyone order the grey and if so how was the match with the grey leather seats and which Lloyd's color number did you pick? They have about 8 greys to pick from.

    Black Lloyd Mats

The black is very dark. Others on the forum have said that if you like the dark look, the Ebony is a better match. It actually looks like a dark grey with almost a greenish tinge to it but it tends to better match the interior.

    - - - Updated - - -

We've seen lots of discussion about the Lloyd Mats and wanted to provide some clarification to help the members of the forum. We spoke with Lloyd and here is what is ongoing:

    1. The "Small Deck Mat, Note:Cargo Well - No Jump Seat" fits in the area that would be where the passenger's feet would be if there was a Jump Seat. i.e. the open area below floor level in this picture:
    2012-Tesla-Model-S-Performance-Trunk-Interior-Image.jpg
The "Standard Trunk Mat, Note:No Jump Seat - Rear Trunk" covers the entire rear cargo department including the well as seen in this pic:
Tesla S Trunk Grey with Cover Down.JPG

There is no way of knowing whether these two mats will fit with the "Jump Seats" option at this point because nobody has been able to get a car with that option to test the fit of the mats. Please share if anyone does get a chance to test the fit of these mats with the "Jump Seats" installed.

    2. We have a request into Lloyd to see if we can get them to provide "a 2nd row seat only" option so that if you just want to protect the back seats from the kids you could order those mats without the fronts.

We will keep you posted on what we learn!

It would be great if Lloyds offered this option, however I would recommend to anyone considering the Lloyds Luxe or Ultimats to order the full front/rear interior set, since the Tesla front mats that come standard with the MS are very cheap looking and difficult to get to lie flat (since they are delivered in a roll).

Very happy with the Lloyd's Rubbertite mats. Yes, they stunk for a while but, after being out in the sun and rain for about 3 weeks and then being doused with Febreze, they have found a home in my S. I have the interior mats and one for the trunk as well.

Was worried a bit that the Grey of the mats may not go well with the Green exterior but, of course, it's not easy to notice them together. The Grey mats go well with the Black leather and the Piano Black trim.

I have tan interior and the Ultimat in LINEN matches very well with the tan leather, which is a pretty light tone as far as tans go. For the frunk and rear cargo spaces, I got the CRYSTAL CLEAR RubberTite. It's decent and will do the job, but it is pretty shiny, similar to carpet protectors that you put rolling desk chairs on. I would probably have gone with grey or black if I were to order now.

    From Lloyd Mats

We finally got a reply re. ordering the "2nd row seat only" request. Here is the official response from Lloyd Mats:

"Unfortunately we cant sell the rear mat separate due to a number of reasons. One of the main reasons is because our mats will not match the Tesla factory mats and the customers will not be happy to have mats that do not match. The other reason is because if you order the front mats today and the rear at a later date they will be cut from a different roll and even though it might be the same color there is a slight variance of color in the dye sometimes visible sometimes not so visible but that is another return we want to avoid."

We hope that clarifies Lloyd Mats' position on restricting the ordering process. This would be the same for any dealer so not really a dealer issue, just a manufacturing policy.

    Cheers

Got my Lloyd ULTIMAT grey mats today (Euro Grey 137). For the grey leather I'm really pleased as it really lightens up the car and cargo areas. I expect it will do a better job of hiding dust and various floor debris that the black mats makes stand out. The floor and rear cargo lights can now be seen. I suspect most don't even realize there are lights under the dash and under the two front seats (oriented to the back floor), which are almost invisible when you have black carpets. Of course if you live with snow and mud, black may be the best choice (actually rubber mats might be best yet).

Anyway, here's a few shots. The color match is better than the photos show, as depends on how the light hits the carpet as in the photos you can see some difference between the front and rear, but the carpets are identical, as is the light (sunlight).

It's a better deal only if you don't live in CA. Autoanything charges sales tax for CA residents. But AutoMatStore.com does not. I went with AutoMatStore, because it came out cheaper with no tax plus free shipping. Autoanything's 15% Off only counts if you spend >$150, so my order with AutoAnything was coming out to $135.

@acentre I have a set installed in my Model S - I went with black w/ white dots - love them! When I get decent weather/light, I will post a pic.

For the rear, I had them simply produce a rectangle that fit nicely just under the edge of the front seat rails.

For the front, I started with the stock mats from Tesla as a template and went slightly larger in a few spots.

I received the Lloyds Ultimat for the front & rear seats. I can't say that the front seat Ultimats are any better than the mats that Tesla provided - which work fine. The gromits that Lloyds have you screw into the Model S floor may are a PITA, I only managed to get 2 of 4 in.

It's great to have the rear seat mat, but if I were doing this again I'd skip the front mats.

Need Mat (that will work with Rear Facing Seats) for Footwell

I've ordered my S with the rear facing seats, and thus I'll need a mat in the rear footwell. I see that Lloyd's sells an Ultimat for this area (they call it a "Small Deck Mat"), but the description for this mat also says "Cargo Well - No Jump Seat". This seems strange to me, as I have a hard time believing that the mat would take up so much room, as to prevent the jump seats from folding down. Has anyone bought this mat and tried folding down the jump seats? Does it fit?

As a side note, I see that Tesla sells a mat for the footwell, but that it only comes as part of a package that includes a mat for the entire trunk (which of course is completely useless if you have the jumpseats). Has anyone with the jump seats tried Tesla's mat for the footwell?

That mat looks really disappointing...the size looks very small and appears not to give very good coverage/protection. I do not understand why they wouldn't make the mat fill-up the space they supposedly custom make it for.

Any issues with storing the jumpseat in the footwell with the mat in place?
  • Mar 1, 2013

Yeah I wasn't exactly overjoyed when I got it. It's really small. But right now it's better than nothing because we have snow and it protects where their feet/boots are. I haven't folded the jump seats down yet...they get used daily.

The smell was not too bad! I smelled it the first day, then it seemed to dissipate...or I've just become immune to it.

I am trying to decide b/w the Luxi black, dark grey, and ebony colored Matt's for my blue P85 with grey leather. (I actually like the "slate" color but it only comes in the Ultimat (which is lower quality).

The dark grey looks awesome but I'm afraid it will get dirty...the black seems so dark so I'm leaning towards the ebony. I've heard some people say the ebony has a greenish hue to it which is what is making me hesitate.

I wonder if they will send me some samples....

I ordered a whole set of ebony based on advice earlier in this thread. Soon after receiving them, I was on the phone with automats.com making arrangements to get samples and to do the exchange. I had a good chat with one of the AutoAnything reps today: I reported that the Lloyd's cargo well mat hasn't been fitting properly and shared the posts above. He didn't have access to the dimensions of that mat, and my car hasn't arrived yet so I couldn't provide more details: he thought the large size of Cargo Logic Liners, Lund Cargo Logic Cargo Liner, Lund Logic Cargo Liner might fit. Can someone measure what size you actually want for that well?

Here are a couple of more photos to help people thinking about Lloyd's mats to decide.

The top row in this one is from the Model S:
    1. Lloyd Velourtex; color "black" x960 (trunk footwell)
    2. Tesla included mat; color of Tesla interior (front passenger)
    3. Lloyd Ultimat; color "Ebony" x118 (front passenger)

The second row is from the Roadster:
    4. Tesla included mat (driver)
    5. Lloyd Luxe; color "ebony" x018 (passenger)

    IMG_5632.JPG

Note that Ebony in Ultimat and Ebony in Luxe are definitely not the same colors. I'd describe it as medium gray in Ultimat; dark grey with a slight green twinge in Luxe.

I'd call the "black" in the Velourtex a charcoal gray with a slight green twinge.

I'd call the Model S mats, well, black. The Roadster mats charcoal.

Here are some edge-on pictures so you can get an idea of the relative thickness. These three mats are all Lloyd's; from left to right they are Velourtex, Ultimat and Luxe:

    IMG_5636.jpg

These are Tesla's Roadster mat, Lloyd's Ultimat, and Tesla's Model S mat:

Just want to chime in on the Lloyd's Ultimats- I got a set today and I was underwhelmed. The quality is somewhat better than the stock mats that came with the car but I wouldn't say dramatically better. They fit nicely. I've heard, though, that the stock Tesla mats are better these days than the ones people complained so much about a couple of months ago. I got the Rubbertite mat for the cargo area. It also fits nicely but is clearly cut from a large stock and the edges are a little rough. If you're interested in saving a few bucks you could probably search for some similar quality rubber sheeting and cut some out yourself that will work just as well. For reference: $125 for the floor mats and $90 for the cargo liner from AutoAnything.

They are exactly as you say, adequate. I use them to protect the car during bad weather months. When the weather is nice and dry, with no mud, or salt, then I will remove them.

The ebony do not match the black, the black I presume will match the black. I have the ebony and think they are great except the anchoring system is awkward, and black would have matched better. I am the only one who has noticed. But they have been super to have this messy winter - and I really (strongly) prefer carpet all 12 months, never rubber or plastic. These have cleaned up nicely for me and withstood a real trampling. I'll pull them out in favor of the new Tesla mats next week in April, until December. Of interest is that the included Tesla mats have changed quite a bit since December - I like the Tesla Insignia on the photos above. I picked up new Tesla Mats for the front and have yet to pull them out of the bag. Bottom line: I strongly support a durable carpet mat for winter and muddy months - don't want to be going zero to sixty in 5 seconds stepping on rubber. Know what I mean?

I bought them from AutoAnything, no problems, and included rear seat mat and mat for the trunk but not frunk. I posted pics in December in this thread above.

I went back and forth quite a bit between the Luxe and the Ultimats and ended up getting the Ultimats to save about $135. I got black to match the black carpeting in the car and I am very pleased with the quality of this product. I only got front and rear passenger compartment mats, and will likely go with WeatherTech or similar for the cargo areas, and for winter interior mats.

In Canada, I ordered from MatMyCar.ca This saves the hassle of brokerage and/or import duties when ordering from the US, and they had a discount coupon code and a free shipping coupon code when I ordered.

Still waiting for my car- Dec 30th is likely to be my delivery date. In the meantime I have enjoyed reading this thread on mats. It was very helpful - thanks to everyone's suggestions and opinions. I had bought Lloyd mats before and like their quality. I have the grey seats and like contrasts so have ordered black. I ordered the thicker pile Luxe mats for the driver, passenger and second row and the cheaper Ultimat for the trunk and frunk. I followed someone's tip about ordering from AutoAnything. 5 minutes after creating an account I had a 15% off coupon in my inbox.
