Model S Order & Delivery Tracker part 2

I unfortunately don't know. All I know is that it finished production on a Thursday night, and then Friday morning was sitting in the parking lot of the rail yard in Fremont. No updates on position until today. Most of my communication has been me emailing them and waiting (I was handed off to another DS to handle discussing my trade-in) but only once did I have to send a followup email. I'm betting the Marietta showroom isn't as busy as Decatur, so that may help in my favor.

My car is in Southern California! I take delivery Thursday.

The emails, and waiting for a response is such a frustrating part.

My DS has been completely on the ball up until recently, and now he's done some kind of disappearing act.

The car went into production on May 5th, and hasn't come out of production. Last Wednesday the DS strongly felt like delivery would happen before memorial day weekend, but I haven't heard anything since then. On Wednesday he said it was finishing up in production. I'm trying to be patient, but the cynical part of me says something's wrong. Maybe it failed QC, maybe it's waiting on some part, or maybe one of the robots got mad at it and ate it for lunch.

I haven't tried calling. I probably will if it still says the same thing in a couple days.

I wish they have more detail in the status notification. Like letting us know what part of production it is in. Not too much detail, but enough to know things are being updated. Right now it's like a stuck gauge.

I'm sure the silence has to do with how crazy busy the DS is due to all the ordered that went in because of the pending expiration of the sales tax exemption. I know it got me off the fence.

Ugh pmoa that's painful, I'll likely be in the same "boat" soon ! well train car lol

And S4WRXTTCS, that's even more maddening... even if they have a "throw the towel in" rule (eg 2 weeks in on a non-custom build) they'd have to start a new one for you.

Ok so I'm no longer as excited to watch it get out of the queue and into production. And since I'm planning to watch the How it's Made and National Geographic specials on a loop while mine is being built (and now adding some deep meditation lol) I don't think I could last much more than a week :crying:

    Congrats!

Definitely less than one week for me now. Kinda hoping I can pick it up sooner but the site hasn't switched over to "It's being prepared for delivery" so I have to think that my car hasn't made it to the showroom yet. I finally got the call today from the trade-in appraiser, I told her I was flexible since I work from home, she said she'd talk to the local dispatch and call me right back. She never did. I'm now afraid I might get the call that I can get my car, but I won't have a quote on my trade-in because they waited until the last minute.

I got my insurance binder and insurance quote, so all that's left is to actually end the waiting!

Appraisal company finally called today, told me that the earliest available time was June 3rd, one week after my delivery date. Told them that wouldn't work, so they said I'd just have to have it inspected on site (which the showroom mistakenly did the day I ordered, which was way too early - so early, they never gave me the value that they came up with.)

I emailed my two DS's early this afternoon to let them know, and to see if my car made it yet. They haven't responded, and they close in 35 minutes, so I'm guessing I'll have to suffer the entire holiday weekend before hearing anything. :(

As an aside, I got an email in the middle of the night from Tesla, saying that my VIN has been generated and directed me to a DS in Florida. Before Georgia changed their direct sales law, Florida handled Georgia's sales and Georgia handled Florida's. I'm one of the first to actually be totally handled in state, even though the car is being registered in California and then transferred to me.

My VIN was generated the day after I ordered and confirmed. Little bit late their on the automated email system!

On the upside, the estimated delivery date on My Tesla has said June forever, and just switched two days ago to Late May, so it's looking like my tentative date is pretty solid to not move any later. I just want it earlier!

Totally tempted to drive down to the SC this weekend to see if I can pap my car in the parking lot...

I'm on the same boat here - my car entered 'in production' early May and my DS expected the delivery will be in Mid-may. It has been over two weeks and the status hasn't changed. My DS changed the tone of the voice from 'in a few days' to 'it is normal production takes 1-2 weeks', as if there is some kind of cs manual they follow for all the FAQ's.

Either my DS doesn't know what's really going on, or they just don't want to tell me the details. I feel like I shouldn't have told them my details of my car needs and personal plans, might have gave them the idea that I don't need my car ASAP, giving the immediate delivery slots to other people.. If you spend over 80k on a car, of course you need it asap.

My DS never was able to figure out what was going on before Memorial day weekend. He went on vacation so he gave me some other contact. and that contact ignored my email. It's probably time I gave up on emailing.

I have this weird suspicion that something is going on with the QC with the 70D that we're not being informed about. Thanks to this thread I know I'm not the only one stuck in production with deafening silence from Tesla as to why, and I know in the Tesla Company forum one person's 70D actually failed QC so badly they're building him another car so his delivery date has been pushed into mid June.

I've heard zero QC complaints of people who have received 70D's. The long production time or QC driven total rebuilds could be just normal things that happen time to time, and there is nothing to worry about.

My situation is I got everything ready (the HPWC install, the Chademo adapter, and the center console ordered) expecting delivery near the estimated May 18th delivery date.

My loan application expected the loan would be issued within 30 days (at least that's the usual time limit for them). I even made the additional $7500+ payment to add to $2500 deposit for the total downpayment. I realize now that this was a mistake, and I shouldn't have made that payment until delivery. But, at the time everything was going smoothly and the DS had no issues communicating to me or with the factory.

As of now the very earliest delivery could be in the beginning of June and that would put it right on the edge of the 30 days of the loan approval.

But, if something happened and they need to build me another car than that pushes it to late june.

If I don't get it before June 30th I'll have to pay state sales tax on it (the exemption ends on June 30th).

Now I did tell my DS before I ordered that I would cancel (and lose the $2500) if delivery slipped past June 30th and they made all sorts of promises and assurances that there was plenty of time (this was back in April) and there was no way that would happen.

In the mean time I've asked for the $7500 back even if it's just a symbolic move. It might seem silly, but it's kind of a control thing. You never give someone money until you absolutely have to, and I'm less than pleased at myself for screwing up yet again on that rule.
  • May 24, 2015

I did also screw up / jumped gun on my part too..my bank funded the financing portion already, and I will be making payment as of next month. I also started a new car insurance effective for the car I still don't have. The painful part of upgrading my garage with 15-50 was done too..This was all due to the assumption that the delivery will be in a week or less after the final purchasing agreement was issued.

Now it will be REAL interesting if I was issued a new vin# - I guess through QC is good for us, otherwise I'd be going back to SC too often.

What color was your 70D? I haven't seen any blue (aka Deep Blue Metallic) 70D's pics yet other than those demos. I was slightly suspecting if the delay had anything to do with blue paint.
I did see a blue (new blue) 85d yesterday on the road though - not sure if it was the demo vehicle or not.
I've seen cars pulled aside at factories for further QC before (VW, Mercedes, Audi etc) but they didn't look like it takes weeks of delays. If our cars to be delayed for over a week it must be something really catastrophic.

Regardless, my day of delivery will be really interesting - I will be bringing a magnifying glass and a LED light stick.

Mine is blue, I should be getting it within a week or two and I'm in Canada so that adds at least 2-3 weeks for delivery.
  • May 24, 2015

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. You could have been pulled off the assembly line to address a specific item and in the meantime, they switched gears to another production configuration and you're car is waiting for them to switch back to your configuration. Just an assumption here, but a possible scenario other than a catastrophic issue. I hope it finishes production soon though!
  • May 24, 2015
    S4WRXTTCS
I'm hoping that it's not a totally rebuild from scratch. I wouldn't normally be too concerned except the silence from the factory thing. So I'm hoping who ever figures out what's causing the issue will chime in.

In the mean time I'll try to think positive, but that's hard for me to do.

I just got back from a date and I don't think she wants to go out with me again.
Last night I had a dream that my mom was driving, and she crashed.
Sometimes I have this weird paranoia that I'll be fired, but I've worked for the same place for 18+ years.

Oh, and mine is blue so maybe I'll just think about how calming and relaxing that deep blue metallic will look.

Awesome pictures - I'm jealous because my MS may never get to charge at the original supercharger - the mother of all superchargers - I bet juice from that supercharger makes your car last longer....

    - - - Updated - - -

Well, I can tell you that they had a quality control issue with my 85S. I just talked to my DES. Production started 5-5-15, and just finished today 5-27-15. She said the delay was a quality issue found in the quality check, and it took that long to fix it. I didn't ask - didn't want to know what it was. She just said "it was nothing mechanical". I'm not worried, based on the great service I got on my 2013 Model S. It was a great car, and if it had had auto-pilot I certainly would have kept it. Anyway, my delivery is going to be next week, Saturday at the latest. I'm not happy with the delay, and they missed their "late May" promise, but at least they're going to deliver a quality vehicle with no problems (I sure hope, since I'm taking it on my first supercharger adventure from Houston to Tennessee about a week after getting it!)

My 70D was also built on 5/5 and has been in the same black hole as your car for the past 3 weeks. I also heard from my DES today, with essentially the same description of what happened as you received. Hopefully there are no lingering issues. Happy to finally see some progress towards delivery, even if it will end up being 2-3 weeks late.

  • May 27, 2015
    S4WRXTTCS
I don't think we're really getting the full story of what happened to the cars of a build date on or around 5/5.

How in the world did all these cars somehow end up getting delayed for so long? Mine is still in production.

There is at least a few of us here along with a few from the other Tesla forum.

The excuses I got from my DS slowly escalated from "it's normal to take a little longer", to "it's stuck in QC for some reason, but don't be alarmed"

But, none of that was good enough for me. It didn't tell me what was wrong, or why so many were involved.

Something happened that was abnormal, and I wasn't having any of their excuses.

Finally my DS was able to get some information from the factory. According to him the cars were stuck waiting for inspection because they used some new kind of Noise insulation foam. He said something along the lines of Beta Foam, or Zeta foam or something like they. My DS can't seem to just email me. He probably knows I hate talking on the phone.

Now I don't know the full story. I don't know if it's better or worse, or anything. I don't know if it's meant as an enhancement, or if there was some supply constraint and they switched over to a secondary source.

I do know Tesla is known for making changes abruptly, and using people's cars as beta testers.

So maybe it goes with the territory.

My car is finally in transit.

So at least that nightmarish experience is over. It wasn't a nightmare so much because of the delay, but the lack of transparency from Tesla. I don't fault my DS, I think he was put in a bad spot trying to deal with a customer that wasn't buying his excuses and the factory that wouldn't tell him exactly what going on.

Can't wait to give this car a thorough inspection when it gets here in a week or so. I don't have an estimate, but it only has to come up to Seattle.

My order seems to be finally out of the incommunicado, too (aka insulation supplier black hole) - the mytesla dashboard status changed from in production to "being prepared for pickup or delivery". As soon as I saw this (how nice of Tesla, I didn't get an email update on this after three weeks 'in production'), my DS replied to my jumped-gun email, saying it needs to pass ANOTHER final inspection and detailing - WHAT?

'Detailing' sounds like those car dealers on the street - is this a standard term for Teslanians? I really hope that my DS isn't trying to hold my horses to ease off the many delayed recent deliveries asking where their cars are.. after being in the dark for a few weeks, this is driving me nuts. I'm afraid I'm kinda jaded before even owning the car on this whole Tesla user experience - hopefully I will wipe off this dark memories with some grins later.

Can anybody confirm there is another status after the "is being prepared for pickup or delivery" message? My DS told me to patiently wait for that message to appear. Being how narrow the delivery window seems to be at the factory (they don't seem to like deliveries on weekdays), I might have to wait for my late child to arrive for one more week...grrrr.

    -- 284 Wh/mi, kind of varies
-- 215 rated miles when charged to 90%
-- 375 mostly highway miles already driven, the wheels, both front and rear are already covered in brake pad dust.
  • May 30, 2015
    DrumCoder
I probably shouldn't be replying yet because I've only had it two days so I'm still enjoying it and that skews the numbers. (While not anywhere near as powerful as what you see on YouTube, launching a 70D is still a lot of fun and gives quite the jolt!!!)

BUT, I'm averaging about 320-325 WH/mi on suburban streets, but I was able to get 280 WH/mi going downtown during Friday rush hour traffic. I enabled TACC on the highway coming home and that helped. My area (Atlanta) is extremely hilly and curvy so that messes with things.

It charges to 215 on a 90% charge, and when I went about 60 miles yesterday, I had 145 left, which is a loss of 70 miles.

    Your mileage may vary.

Ha, maybe bring up the battery some, charge up to 92% or so then lower back down to 90% and you'll see an increase of 90% being around 215? Worth an experiment... Or report back after you do a range 100% charge one day and switch back to 90% - curious to know if your number changes!

I am actually curious about something. Is there a rule of thumb on how often you should take it to 100% ? I do not plan to do it often but was wondering if there was a guideline.
  • May 30, 2015

As often as you need. You will need it only when taking trips where you're maxing out the range, so you won't stay long at 100% so it's not very damaging.

It has been rather hot and humid in NoVA (34 deg C/93 deg F, close to 70% rel. humidity today) that the A/C has been running really hard (have it set to 23 deg C/73 deg F inside). The blower fan on auto was not going down below 7. There was a lot of water pouring out from the evaporator and running from under the car. It lost about 8 miles (~2.5 kWh) just standing still and trying to cool down the car out in the sun. Should have parked it in a shade somewhere.

The car sat in the sun all day on Thursday. I remotely started the climate control three times for about 10 minutes each as I was away and could not move the car. Keep in mind the 8 miles were just an estimate by the car charged at 90% showing 215 miles that dropped to 207. It is possible that it adjusted the guess-o-meter, taking into account the increased discharge rate, to show a lower range, and that the used energy was less. It is also possible that the A/C ran in addition to my remote commands to keep the battery cool.

My 70D finally just moved into production so hopefully in transit within a few days at most. Love seeing all the great colors on here like blue/grey, etc. I couldn't resist it and went with the bright white ;-) which seems these days is becoming less popular of a color - so hey, fine with that too. ;-)

Soon, probably on the weekend. Might be a bit tricky, my family doesn't want me posting to social media, they believe in the "Evil Eye". It's a Middle Eastern superstition.

That should be "picked up" on Monday. ;-)

We dropped it off at Driven Dynamics for paint protection that same day, so I didn't put many miles on it yet. Can't wait to pick it up again!

    Hi Kushari,

I ordered a 70D in blue also and will be getting it at the Montreal Store. The question i have for you is how long between you got the "In transit" and the car actually showing up ready for delivery in Montreal?

I got my "In transit" confirmation (website) today!!!

    Timeline for my car:
70D Blue, Next Gen seats, Autopilot, Standard rims, Pano roof, Premium Interior, Air,Ultra high fidelity sound.
    - Store order: 05-May-2015- Confirmed order: 13-May-2015
    - Build start: 29-May-2015
    - Build end: 04-Jun-2015
    - In Transit: 04-Jun-2015

    Thank you for any info.

Still debating if I should get the dual chargers...

    1. order online and confirm order do as soon as you are sure it is what you want. can do over phone. not sure it speeds much up though as far as queue.
    2. REceive VIN number -- x days later? pretty much right after you confirm it seems. after this you will get the red "services sign up" button where you can prepay service or warranty but don't have to.
    3. Once receive vin, go to tesla site and fill out credit application for load/lease? you can change your lease/finance/other for quite some time. you can do the lease apps anytime I think your ready. others can advise on next steps. it seems that you won't do much until after your car is in transit really. then they will want to wrap up financing, you can pay online, and you also get a delivery button with options i heard but will see...

They've graduated to driving especially on the weekends.

Before I got it I was certain I'd post about the entire experience, and I'd take videos of it supercharging.

    I'd do all those things.

But, have I? Nope. Partly it's because I'm still in the process of learning how to do everything. Sure it's one thing to read it in a manual but another thing to actually use it in various situations.

Like the TACC seems to work great in practice. Certainly a lot better than the user manual makes it out to be. But, I'm having some issues related to the cancel/resume function. Sometimes I want it to resume with the old speed, and sometimes I want it to resume with a new speed. Like if I go from one hwy with one speed limit to another one with an entire different one. When I pull back to re-engage it the car goes back to the old speed. The only way so far that I can get a new speed is by turning it off and on. But, you're not supposed to have to do that. It also doesn't seem to want to resume after I've hit the brake. Like when resuming on 55mph highway with traffic lights.

My answer is probably in the thread about cars with TACC without the button.
  • Jun 6, 2015
    Cyclone
Sadly, TACC can only be "set" to the current speed limit when in either one of those cases:
    - 1) the current programmed speed is 0. I.e., the white triangle is at the bottom of the speedo.
    - 2) TACC is already engaged.

You cannot go from using TACC at one speed, slow down for a road change, and resume directly to the new speed limit. You must resume to the old speed limit and reset to the new speed limit. It's one grip a couple people have shared.

After you hit the brake, you should be able to pull the cruise stalk towards you to resume the prior set speed. Is this not happening for you?

Thanks for the info. I was too busy joking around in another thread to make it to the thread I came on the computer to read. Apparently I get easily distracted on the TMC forum.

As to the brake resuming I did try it, but there has always been someone behind me. So I probably just didn't give it enough time.

Heck my primary reason for getting this car is around here we don't really DRIVE anymore. We drive a tiny amount until we get to the main street where we join the train. Then when we want off the train we turn in somewhere. This car seems perfect for that.

Me too! I'm out finding any excuse to drive. I am at the Hagerstown supercharger as I type this. And one thing that was mentioned earlier, the parcel shelf and yacht floor are standard. :)

I'm waiting for the day I get an actual Tesla Moment so I can finally post it there, but I haven't gotten anything in the first 666 miles I've driven the car. (I did take a picture to commemorate the number.)

For what I used the TACC for - outside of rush hour traffic on the highway - it worked very well. I can now actually say that I confidently drove 90 miles on the interstate (twice!) without ever touching the pedals. There was one point where I hovered over the brake, but wound up not needing it. That is probably the story that amazes my friends the most.

This weekend is my first trip where I might need an hour or two at an L2 charger to be able to make it back home without worrying. Just went out to the garage to turn on the charging to top up to 100% before I leave in a little bit over an hour...

I have a 60 mile each way drive to my parents and I am loving TACC. I still keep my foot hovered over the brake and there are times where there is fast stopping in front of me that I brake. Just want to play it safe.

I have some of the Firmware glitches people are talking about in the Firmware thread like the radio playing when I get in the car and sometimes even the climate kicking in when I had it off previously.

The one thing happening that I have yet to see someone mention is the lane assist. Mine goes off when the pavement is a different color. For example, there is some construction around here and they have replaced only part of the pavement. My car thinks thats the end of a lane and there is a one mile strip where I get to feel the lane assist kicking in the whole time. Its happened on a few different roads around me and the color is really not that drastic. I am surprised it is doing it and maybe when I am not as tired I will search to see if others are running into it.
  • Jun 6, 2015
    S4WRXTTCS
Actually I started an entire thread because the lane assist was going off when it shouldn't have. I hadn't really experienced what the lane assist sounded like, and I kept trying to figure out what the sound was. I wasn't anywhere close to the edge of the lane so I dismissed the lane assist as being the culprit. I even thought I had turned it off.

Only I didn't and that was what was causing the noise. For some reason I don't feel it in the steering wheel. It just makes this noise as if you're going over the edge of the road. It happens on all sorts of roads here because they're poorly maintained.

I wish I could delete the thread since the answer to the thread was user error.
  • Jun 6, 2015
    Cyclone
I wouldn't worry about it. The wording you used and the description you gave may help someone else in the future searching for specific phrases trying to figure out what the noise is without realizing it's lane assist.

Curious, did they give you an ETA when you ordered? or just a number? I'm thinking about buying a 70D and wondering about how long it will take to get...once I push the button

They give you an ETA, right on the website.
But then your DS reaches out to you in about a week, and gives you a more accurate prediction.
The exact date is decided as you get closer to your delivery. (Car delivery).

I did the purchase at the store, but they practically did what could be done at home via online. One you press submit, the my.teslamotors.com start to have info on where to do financing or lease, status of build, tx.

Did you get any bling at the store? I got photos with my family, with the car I "built" in the screen in the background, and a killer Tesla polo shirt. That's the whole reason to go into a store!
