Model S Insurance part 2

You going with Progressive vs USAA? Even though USAA is cheaper? I'm curious as to why... I have found over the years that the premium is not the only thing to look at. Some companies have easier claims experiences with fewer hassles, and some companies will use cheaper after market parts in repairs vs OEM parts. So check carefully before you pull the trigger. I have used USAA for over fifteen years now and have had nothing but positive experiences. Before that I had used Allstate, State Farm, and Geico, and left all three due to negative experiences. I have had no experience with Progressive.

+1 to this. I went progressive over GEICO but my 6mo premium difference was >$300. I would pay a premium for GEICO insurance. In fact I plan to re-shop them in 6mos when Progressive ups my rate.

Fwiw, back in 2000, I used Progressive to insure a high-end motorhome.

They were the worst experience for claims ever. Swore back then I'd never use them again.

I have only used USAA so can't compare them to anyone either but they have been excellent. If they are cheaper, I'd strongly consider them as well.

I just got a quote from Farmers yesterday for $674/6 months. We have a multi-car discount and many years with no claims. The agent had no idea what a Tesla was as it isn't in their database (so she said) and they put me on hold for several minutes researching before giving me this quote.

I've been with Allstate for years and they quoted me $2500 to ensure the model S. I switched all of my vehicles to Geico a couple of weeks ago and now I am paying 1/3 for all of them including the soon to arrive model S!

Huge thanks to everyone here who encouraged us to shop around!

I am on Farmer's also. My premium for the Tesla is $605. Which is $113 LESS than our other car (Lexus GS350). This is with good driving/multi-car/homeowner discount. And there's also an alternative fuel discount. That's with $500 deductible for collision and comprehensive. Had not problem getting the insurance set up, agent had a number for me in less than 5 minutes.

I'm collecting my car in a couple of days and wanted to survey the insurance lay of the land. I called Geico, Farmers, USAA and my current company Progressive. USAA left me on hold and I hung up. Both Farmers and Geico said "We do not insure the Tesla electric vehicle" and Progressive honored the quote they gave me four weeks ago. I thought the Geico and Farmers response strange given others experiences.

USAA left you on hold? In the 10+ years I've used them I don't think I've ever been on hold for more than 5 min with them. Maybe your call got accidentally dropped or something. I'd try again and see how their prices compare although they usually are a little more expensive.

My experience with USAA is inline with dsm363. Nothing but good things, but never had car insurance with them. I have been banking with them for a while, and they were runners up in my insurance (went with Progressive, much less expensive) search, as well as my loan (went with my other bank, and mortgage provider) search.

I would give them a call (assuming you qualify for insurance, must be vet or family for insurance I think). If you search for #USAA versus any #[INSERT BANK/INSURANCE COMPANY NAME HERE] into Twitter. You get almost 100% glowing approval, versus almost 100% anger and rage. I do remember going through some hoops to get an insurance quote from USAA (Model S wasn't in their system, and I didn't have VIN at the time) but it came back about $200 more than Progressive, and about $50 cheaper than GEICO and State Farm. Everyone else was about double Progressive's quote. As for my loan. My local regional bank gets about 40% of my banking (USAA is the rest), and they have my mortgage. They were more than happy to loan me way more than I wanted (100% of the value of the car) and had the added benefit of being about 1.5 miles from my house. They also produced the same rate as USAA, then dropped it 0.1% to seal the deal.

EDIT: All insurance prices are /6mo and included my wife's Civic.

My Roadster is insured through Farmers. No problem. When they type stuff into their computers they don't know Tesla has a four character code of TSLA and try TESL and don't find things. People say stupid things when their computer gives an answer they don't expect. Rather have you go away instead of figuring out what they've done wrong.
VIN number helps here. My first insurance agent couldn't find Tesla, but typing in the VIN decoded to Tesla (Or TSLA) and everything was fine.

It may be easier to try Geico's web site, which now has the S in all versions available to quote. I have Geico and have my S insured with them :).

I just signed up through Geico. They have all battery configurations and recognize the 2013 model, and the price was better than what I'm paying now (replacing a Lexus RX330). I also tried the insurance guy from my Credit Union, who looked up many, many companies, and he couldn't do better. Most of them just wouldn't even quote it. He told me go with Geico, check back in a year after the lazy companies get data on the Teslas after they've been on the road for awhile. Just in time for me to get the X!

I requested several quotes in the last few days from various insurers. I have a VIN but it doesn't seem to be in any of the systems yet, so look-up is based upon price or make/model if the insurer has that already (few do). (I was actually told that my car is ready today, so I'm wondering how much longer until the VIN can be found.)

Geico has the best rate for me, although I want to talk to them more about their policies for things like replacement parts, etc. My current insurance company, Nationwide, did not have a very good rate, but they know nothing about Tesla (or Tisla as my agent spelled it.) They were about $230 more than Geico for comparable coverage. I'm hoping that will come down a bit after they can quote from the VIN. (I have a home policy and am in the middle of getting an umbrella policy with Nationwide so am hoping not feel the need to switch right now.)

For comparison with what I'm currently paying, I'm adding another good driver (my fiance) and keeping my current car (2003 350z) but dropping most of its coverage. It comes out to $450 more with Geico, or $680 more (ouch!) with Nationwide. I guess that's mostly to be expected.

Looks like GEiCO just lost a customer of over 8 years.

I shopped around for $100k/$300k/$100k coverage with a $500 deductible for Comprehensive/Collision and Progressive was the winner.

I'm 30 with no violations, points, accidents within the last 5 years.

Here's how the quotes looked for me:
    State Farm: $922/6mo
    Progressive: $628/6mo
    Geico: $880/6mo
    Erie: $807/6mo
Travelers: Need to talk to agent
AllState: Kicked over to esurance site
    esurance: Tesla not in system
Farmers: Need to talk to agent

I'm going to try to talk to another GEICO rep because it just seems really strange that their quote is so high.

My GEICO and Progressive numbers were very similar to yours. I talked with GEICO people twice, including telling them exactly what I was going to pay Progressive when I was canceling my Insurance of over 5 years. They wouldn't budge off of their number.

I jumped ship and went with Progressive and didn't even bother giving GEICO a follow up call. It's ashame that customer loyalty means nothing now a days.

Thanks for the suggestion but my loan terms cap me at a $500 deductible.

PenFed's documents say you must have a $500 deductible. However, if you ask they will raise it to $1000. The first person at PenFed I talked to was not aware of this, but the supervisor was. Other banks may allow for similar increases.

I just set up insurance at only $589 for 6 months with State Farm in Dallas, TX (for a P85 Model S). This is for $250K/$500K/$100K liability coverage, $100K/$300K/$50K on uninsured motorist, emergency road service, rental reimbursement, and with a $500 deductible. 34Y/male, clean record, with homeowner's, disability, and umbrella coverage also with State Farm...so nice discounts for multiple policies.

I got quotes from Progressive and Gieco around the $1100 mark for 6 months (S85, and my wife's Q5 - clean records, aside from on no-fault impact from rear). eSurance, my current insurer, doesn't cover Tesla's, even though their parent company does. Then one of the guys at work mentioned his broker that saved him a bunch of money, so I tried them, and sure enough, I'm down to $1100 per year for the cars, and my homeowners came down by about 30% as well. I shop this stuff around every 6 months, so I'm fairly happy. If you're in TX and would like contact details, PM me...no affiliation, aside from being a happy customer.

Got my VIN yesterday for March delivery. Called Amica, and they quoted about 2400/yr for the car and said underwriting needs to approve it because of its cost and the fact that it is exotic. I told them that Geico quoted me 861.42 for 6 months, about 700/yr less. This is for 3 drivers, one of which is 17 years old with a license for only 6 months. I have been with Amica since 1985, but will be switching once the Tesla arrives.

I just got off the phone with USAA. They quoted 462/yr. 13 dollars a month more than the Prius. Please note that I've been with them for 35 years and not had a claim (knock on wood) and I DO NOT have a VIN. Once I give them the Vin I'm assuming their system will recognize the P85 and raise the rate somewhat but probably not over 500 a year.

    Edit: 1000 deductible.

My quote from MetLife was 1100/6mo, still trying to get them to lower it but will likely be moving companies after 15yrs and no auto claims. They also mention the vin doesn't validate so it's mostly off the value of the car.. They know it's a sedan but seems more like what I might expect for a roadster..

Metlife was all set to sell me a policy for the Model S based on valuation, but when it went to the underwriter they said "Nope, sorry - We can't insure it. It's an electric car." They suggested Geico or Progressive, both of which have the Model S in their systems so quotes online. I went with Progressive as they were cheaper for me + wife for our 2 cars.

I wonder why my quote with USAA was so much lower? A little more than half. This was a pre Vin quote. Will the rate double when their system figures out its not just a Model S but a Performance model? They didn't give any choices for the pack size or the P model. It was just a quote too. Not a binder. I have to call back when I get the vin. Could it actually double? Doesn't seem likely that their computer was wrong. I even questioned the girl and told her it sounds too low.

It sucks to be in the Toronto area:

$2758 + tax / year ($300 ded) and that's with 2 cars, home, rental property and perfect driving record (no claims/accidents). By way of comparison, the Cadillac CTS I'm trading costs me $2,139. Believe me, I've shopped this around and it's the best I can do.

Increasing the uninsured/underinsured motorist limit for property damage (i.e. to your Tesla) from $50K to $100K, which is the third number of the $100K/$300K/$50K figure, might be a smart move for a nominal bump in premium.

    Al Sherman

Update: Just gave USAA my VIN and the quote is the same. 462.50/year. 300/500/100. No kids on the policy. I mentioned again that it sounded low compared to what I've seen/heard. The only thing they said was that I have a "clean driving record and have been with them for 32 years. Still seems low doesn't it?
  • Feb 26, 2013
    swegman
It does seem low. I got an initial quote with Gieco of a little over $800/6 month period before they got the VIN. When I gave them the VIN (its a performance version), the rate went up $150/6 month period. On the other hand, my 17 year old son only costs $350/6 month period, whereas Amica and State Farm wanted between $2400 and $2600 for him. I questioned Gieco about this, but they said that the quote is correct. So I told them to issue the policy effective March 20 (the last day of my delivery window).

BTW, called Travelers for a quote. The tesla is not in their system.

Found out today when I was looking at my insurance for a different reason, when Progressive added my Tesla they didn't give it comprehensive, collision, or uninsured motorist. Despite the fact my other cars have those and the RX8 I replaced had those coverages. I knew the Model S insurance seemed lower than expected when I added the Model S over the phone, but I thought "sports car -> EV sedan, guess that changes my risk category".

Had them add it immediately, but was a little shaky when I got off the phone realizing if something had happened in the last 6 weeks I'd be damn near bankrupt; out a $100k car and still on the hook for a $75k loan.

is that a year, or just for the remainder of the policy term. My experience has been that the insurance people only tell you how much more it will be for your existing policy term, unless you specify you want the quote for an entire year of coverage.

I beat them to death with three (probably annoying for them) phone calls and it's 462.50 per year for the Model S P85. 1000 deductible with all the coverage. They sent it to me in writing. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't missing something. USAA.

UM/UIM PD is really a misnomer. If you have physical damage coverage (comprehensive and collision) with a deductible, it is actually a waiver of your deductible if an uninsured vehicle damages your car. I am assuming most people with an S are carrying comprehensive & collision on their cars due to the value. If you are looking to save, get a high deductible ($2,500-$5,000). Although if you are financing, some banks wont allow it. I would recommend increasing your UM/UIM to $250/500k and even buying $1M extra thru your umbrella carrier.

Any time you add coverage, you should always review it in writing. Especially when doing it over the phone with a direct writer such as Progressive or Geico. If you had totaled your car 3 months down the road, your word "but you said on the phone I was covered" would not do well against Progressive attorneys. As for your bank not catching it, they might have caught it next year maybe?

Psullivan and Al Sherman and others shopping,

The first determinate of auto insurance rates is location. Comparing ones rate in Batesville, IN vs Carlsbad, CA will not get you a apples to apples. USAA is a very competitive auto company with great service. However, they aren't the best rate in all states + you have to have a military service connection.

The best thing I can recommend is shop. This forum is proof that rates very widely by geography and company.

Al - I too have USAA - and have for 30+ years. I would be very surprised if your quote was for a year. USAA usually quotes policies for 6 months. You may want to re-verify that figure. Also, it may be too where you live. I live in Florida, and my USAA rates are around 330 every 6 months.

    - - - Updated - - -

USAA may not be the cheapest, but they are always one of the top 1 or 2 rated companies, and have been for years for their service. Plus, I have NEVER had any hastles with them for any claims I have ever had, and that is for home, auto, umbrella, etc.

Called progressive (NJ) and got a quote on how much it would be to add the Model S Performance to my existing policy. Existing policy (just one SUV that has me and my wife on it) was $498/6mo for 100/300/100 coverage and 500/750 deductible for collision/comprehensive.

To add the MSP at 100/300/100 coverage with 100/100 (thats $100.00, not $1000.00), my 6mo premium would increase to a little over $950/6mo total for both cars. If I wanted a higher $500/$750 deductible it would've been $840/6mo.

Basically, adding the MSP to my plan would only cost me about $350-$450 per 6 months ($700-$900 per year) depending on comp/colli deductible 100/100 vs 500/750. This is a LOT less than what I had expected. Very good for me. Thought I was going to have to shop around but I don't. Yey!

I don't know your personal financial situation. But if you can afford an S, I am assuming you have some financial means. My recommendation would be you increase your liability limits. $100/300/100 is $100,000 of bodily injury per person. Accidents blow thru that limit very easily. Think of medical costs and lost wages of someone injured in an accident.

not really worried about that. you can't really get sued in NJ if you hit someone unless they elected for the 'I can sue someone' insurance option but that more than doubles the price of insurance so nobody ever buys that one. thus everyone (92% of NJ drivers) have selected the 'i can sue only if I'm killed or seriously disfigured' option.

Again, not knowing your financial situation I cant determine the limits you should buy. As stated before, USAA is a good company. However, good company does not address issue of adequate limits. In this country, you are liable for damages you cause in an accident. I know the auto limit you buy (350/500/100) will be sufficient to buy an Umbrella to extend the liability limit of your auto policy.

You are correct, that NJ is a PIP - No Fault state - Limited right to sue. This is a good cost containment law for most accidents. Except for Florida where it is riden with fraud.

Here is a good description I found of NJ auto insurance...
LIMITED RIGHT TO SUE By choosing the Limitation on Lawsuit Option, you agree not to sue the person who caused an auto accident for your pain and suffering unless you sustain one of the permanent injuries listed below: (Choosing this option does not affect your ability to sue for economic damages such as medical expenses and lost wages.)
loss of body part, significant disfigurement or significant scarring, a displaced fracture, loss of a fetus, permanent injury (Any injury shall be considered permanent when the body part or organ, or both, has not healed to function normally and will not heal to function normally with further medical treatment based on objective medical proof.), death.

Still a bad accident will exceed these thresholds and allow for a lawsuit. And these injuries will probably exceed $100,000.

For what it's worth I went with Nation Wide as they offered 3 years of full replacement value which is better than the standard cash value. Not knowing the future values of Tesla I thought this was the best way to go in case the car is ever declared totaled. In this case I will get my purchase cost back.
  • Mar 9, 2013
    neroden
Woo. I should actually look into that. I didn't find any full replacement value options when I was looking.

Being in an annoying time crunch, I ended up going with GEICO, which was 25% cheaper than the next competitor for my particular driving record and location (NY). Interestingly, the vast majority of the cost of the insurance is collision and comprehensive -- that's the expensive aluminum-bodied car, I'm sure. The cost of all the liability and injury related stuff was very small by comparison.

    - - - Updated - - -

This was my experience in NY as well; most companies wouldn't quote for the Tesla Model S at *all*. I only managed to get three quotes, after going to two insurance agents and online.

One of those didn't like my fiancee's driving record and had to "send it to underwriting", offering an absurdly high rate. (She has two collision claims in five years from freakish one-car accidents. The more recent was the high expense of replacing a gas tank which got hit by a ice chunk kicked up by a wheel, developed a hole, and started leaking... an accident which I'm pretty sure would not have even caused an insurance claim in the Model S.) I don't think I want to deal with a company which is that picky.

Geico is surcharging ~$180 for the gas tank accident, but it's still almost exactly $600 / 6 months, which is far better than the competition; the next best quote I got was over $800 / 6 months!

Who's cheapest seems to depend first and foremost on what state you're in. Perhaps the insurance thread should be sorted by state.

I have spent the last few days trying to get quotes anywhere near what everyone has posted here. The best I've got is $410 a month from Progressive. Other companies willing to give me a quote have been twice that or more. Allstate tried to convince me that there were only 2 body shops certified to work on the Model S in the United States and that's why the collision coverage was so high, and why my quote was $840 a month(!!!). I've been told these prices are typical of "exotic" cars like the Model S. Do I need to ask for a quote based on the price of a comparable car to get a decent quote? I have not purchased insurance in years. My current car (1985, and only liability) costs $430 a year to insure. I have never got a ticket and have only been involved in one minor accident (my fault). Is my accident the reason for these high rates? The insurance agents I've spoke with seem to think the rates are high because its a rare car and the collision part of the quote is super high. Anyone have any ideas or any tips?

Try Geico. You can get a quote online, and they seem to be less than 90% of other companies...

My recommendation is to go online. I went online first checking out Geico, Progressive, State Farm and Farmers. We currently are insured with Allstate and knew they didn't want to insure the Tesla, but my husband did contact them since we have been with them for over 20 yrs. We got quotes of 1400/ yr with Geico and Progressive and Farmers were 1800/yr. Allstate gave us a crazy rate. Remember rates are based on age and driving experience. We are 51 and 46 insuring the Tesla and Mini S convertible. No tickets, accidents in over 10 yrs.

We are probably going with Geico. I call the local agents of Geico, Farmers and State Farmers to discuss the process for getting our cars and possibly home insured. They were all very familiar with Tesla and very helpful. The only one concerned about repair shops was Allstate.

I'm 27. Forgot to mention that. Probably a large contributing factor. GEICO quoted me 900 a month. Still seems outrageous. My delivery date is soon, so might just have to suck it up and pay some crazy amount. I've saved an invested every penny I've made since I was 16 and it's kind of weird spending it on something that won't make me money, like a fancy car. I'm kind of freaking out right now. I'm going to try getting quotes for an M5 and some AMG Benz and see how they compare.

We have a bunch of insurance with Liberty Mutual and they quickly quoted me $600 annually over the phone with a $1,000 deductible, needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. Got it all confirmed within minutes. We are ages 40 and 38 with clean records.

Ouch! So you are young, have a prior accident, and i'd bet by the quotes you are getting that you live in the city. Here are some companies I know insure a Model S. Some are direct and some are thru brokers. What brokers have you contacted?

Geico charged me an outrageous amount on the VW TDI even though my driving record was perfect, credit rating was very good, and no tickets or accidents. I switched to Progressive after the first time for $800/6 mo less. I'm amazed that people are getting good quotes from Geico.

I just completed the geico online quote and they are the lowest by far. Iam currently with state farm and pay about $4300 for the year for the 3 cars we own (audi r8, Audi tts convertible, and a range rover to be replaced with my model s) geico just quoted me 2k for the year for all 3 cars (the quote was ran with the model s as the 3rd car not the rangerovrr.)

My real (not quoted) rate through USAA is $375/6 months ($750/year). P85. Slightly more than our other cars but not much more. That's with a $1,000 deductible and high coverages all around. We do have 4 vehicles insured with them so I'm sure that helps. And no driving teenagers...

I just switched to Geico, effective 3/14/13. $3900/yr for the performance S, a 2013 Avalon hybrid and a 2005 Prius. That includes a 17 year old son on the policy. Saving over $1000/year compared to my current insurance

Pretty much the same thing happened to me with Mercury which is usually the lowest cost insurer. Finally was able to get a half way decent rate from State Farm. Insurance companies do not like cars they do not understand.

I initially added the P85 to my Progressive policy online. They weren't able to resolve the VIN number at first, so I just selected "Model S".

After reading the comments on here with most P85 rates over $1000, I was concerned that the rate I received ($654/6 months with 250/500/100 and $250 deductible - $0 glass) was on the low side for a P85 and it was maybe for a MS40, which is half the value.

I emailed them to check - Progressive double checked the VIN and even updated the policy description to now read Model S P85. Rate stayed the same at $654. WA state.

I actually live in East Palo Alto, right on the border of Palo Alto. Don't know if that's better or worse for rates than the city. Contacted most everyone on that list. Liberty Mutual refused to insure me. Said it was a combination of rare car and accident within the last year. More than half of the companies said they didn't insure the car on my first attempt, so I just called again and got a different person who most of the time was able to help. A few companies told me they would call me back after a few attempts, but I haven't heard anything after following up a few times, so I gave up on them. Ended up going with Progressive. Was able to get my policy down to a more reasonable, but still very high, $360 a month by keeping my current car on the policy and dividing some of my miles between them. I was originally planning on getting rid of the old car, but figured I can use it when I need to visit job sites and don't want to risk the low profile tires of the Tesla.

@trils0n, the East Palo Alto part may be a big factor whether you live right on the edge of Palo Alto alongside 101 or much further away and closer to say, Bohrmann Steel on Pulgas. For better or for worse, the city still has a bad rep and prohibitively high insurance on an expensive car for a young (single?) person can be expected.

That said, if you are interested, PM me and I can give you my Liberty Mutual agent's contact info. He's in Walnut Creek but, can do everything over the phone and/or by email. I've had an excellent run with him and got a great rate ($1,100 per year with a $500 collision deductible) for my Model S. and, I live in Newark just across the bay from East Palo Alto.

@gg_got_a_tesla Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it. I bought my insurance yesterday, and picked up the car today at the factory. I couldn't be more thrilled with the car -- it totally alleviates the sour feeling higher than expected insurance caused.

I just called to have the Model S added to my policy with 21st Century, but they apparently do not insure it. Where did you get the information from? I just want to make sure I am not taking to some rep that doesn't know the exact information. Thanks.

I underwrite personal umbrellas. I filtered my data to look at "tesla" and associate with the primary auto carrier. I looked back at the data and that was a roadster insured by 21st century. The car is in Thousand Oaks. So it must be an S issue and not state. I would call again and ask to speak to someone who could advise you if/when the S will be added to database.

I got quotes from Geico, Progressive, and Farmers for $100k/$300k/$100k with a $500 deductible for comprehensive and collision for both me and my wife. Progressive was cheapest at $109/mo if I pay in full for six months, $121 otherwise. Geico was $141/mo. Farmers wanted $437/mo. Wtf? Four times as much? Why? We currently have Allstate, and apparently they make you to call your agent to get a quote if you already have insurance with them, so I guess I'll be doing that tomorrow.

    30 days

I understand that I have 30 days upon being notified that my MODEL S has arrived to take delivery. Is that true? My insurance company needs a bit of time to research the MS before they will insure it. They already said no to insuring a Porsche. :-(

So, is 30 days from notification of the arrival of my MS to acceptance and payment of my MS correct??????

Thanks for the data point. Doesn't sound good. I use Allstate for home owner's, umbrella, and a few other things, so switching insurers for auto will jack up my rates elsewhere. Anyone know what the rules are about using multiple carriers across different cars? ie, Tesla with one company, remaining cars with another?

At least they didn't flat out deny you. 21st Century Insurance basically said we don't cover any of these "exotic" electric cars because we don't know how much it will cost to repair and there's no track record for them.

@rogbmw - what are your coverage amounts? Just getting my USAA quote now and initial quote is $1100/yr for my wife and me (no accidents/low mileage). Our coverage amounts are 300k/500k/100k and we also have a $500 collision deductible (and $250 comprehensive deductible). Thanks.

I have the same coverage except for 1000 deductible on everything. My yearly at USAA is 462.50. It might all be in the deductible. I know they consider time as a client, and something to do with military service but I'm not sure in what regard. I've never insured any car with anyone else for 32 years. Maybe call and ask for specifics.

Auto insurance rates are very location specific. Same insurer will quote you markedly different rates even if you're garaged the next town over, never mind in a different state.

I just switched from Amica to State Farm. Love Amica service but rates just got crazy. Clean record and wife plus me. $250/500/100. $500 collision deductible and $100 comp. Amica was a little over $2000 for my P85 and State Farm was about $1200 (annual). Overall premium for two cars, house and $2m umbrella with Amica over $5k. State Farm less than $3k.

    Al Sherman:

Do you mind saying how many autos you have on your USAA policy? We're right now at four: the '08 F-350, '06 VW TDI, Jenny's Subaru, and the '98 E-350 (it's a 4WD Diesel!), and have used USAA for 41 years. Only seven weeks ago I tapped them for the first oops I've ever had.....and it wasn't an accident, but it ran into many, many thousands of dollars: water in bad diesel meant I had to replace all 8 injectors plus a fuel pump on the F-350. Ouch - but they came through like a champ.

Of course, even at their darned good rates, multiplying that times 41 years meant they have built up a very, very nice nest egg through me!

Wonder how much new injectors will cost on the Tesla...... ;)

Call around. It seems that every insurance company will be different for different parts of the country. I had to leave Farmers after 17 years because they wanted about $3,000/yr for just the Tesla. I went with Geico, and covered my Tesla P85+, 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, and 2007 Suburban LTZ for $630/6months with $500 deductible, $250,000/500,000.

Ditto for me, also after 17 years - ever since moving to the USA. My agent went out his way to run this up the ladder at Farmers corporate, but could not get any meaningful explanation for why they are so ridiculously uncompetitive on the Model S. In my area Farmers offers the lowest rate on the Volt by quite a wide margin, but they appear to be uninterested in retaining the business of Model S owners.

Ok, last one for today: Insurance - Anything I should know?

Male - 43 - Married 20 years - One kid - no at-fault accidents or claims in 25 years; same with wife. Kid too young to drive.

When I looked at the 2013 BMW 750Li it was $826 per year for full coverage. I was pleasantly surprised by that!

What is the general consensus for Tesla Model S car insurance? If I absolutely love the car on my test drive Friday I'll call my insurance company and get a quote but I just wondered if it's any different than any gas-operated vehicle.

    Thanks again!

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive the insurance is. There are insurance threads on TMC. My insurance was less than 100 dollars per year more than my Prius. I even called them (USAA) back twice to make sure that their quote was correct. Every time I called it came down to driving record. I'm older than you and have been with the same company for 35 years but every time I called they said: "you haven't had an accident in 35 years."

Advice: Call the insurance company before the test drive. Once you do the test drive it wont matter what the insurance costs.

Tommy Boy, I'm roughly the same demographic and Model S + Plug In Prius = $1200/yr via USAA. Progressive quoted me a little more I think $1300 but don't recall for sure. These are for $500 deductible.

    Just received my rate:

I use Wawanesa in California. We've had them for 17 years - no claims, although three no-fault accidents and they've always been awesome about getting our cars repaired and the paperwork has been a breeze.

Two drivers - male 44, female 43 - No accidents ever, no tickets in past 20 years for either of us, no claims. Insurance coverage maxed out.
