Todd Burch License Plate Mounting
Where I live (Virginia), unfortunately license plates are required to be mounted to the front of the vehicle. Franz never did address the oft-asked front license plate mounting question, but looking at the front end design I only see two potential areas to mount it:
- The solid part of the grille, right below the Tesla logo
- Centered over the lower air intake.
Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of any of these options. Ugh. The thought of drilling into the bumper of my new $70k car to mount an ugly white rectangle makes me sick.
After doing a little web research I've found that people generally don't get away with ignoring this law and leaving the front plate off.
I'm not sure how detrimental mounting a plate over part of the air intake would be, but I see it at least as a possibility.
So which of these two mounting locations would you prefer?
Option 1:
![]()
or Option 2:
![]()
It's like choosing between crap and crappier...
Edit: I wonder if this mounting bracket on a BMW might work...

Aug 14, 2011
Doug_G I'd say the lower position looks better, but as you say it's very dubious that Tesla would want you mounting it in front of the air intake.
The whole thing is pretty annoying, as we're right on the border with Quebec. Thousands of single-plated cars cross the river from Quebec every day...
Aug 15, 2011
vfx Plate looks too small.
Unfortunately.
Aug 15, 2011
NigelM Option 3. Move to Florida.
Seriously though, don't some states have a minimum height above the ground for license plates? (I believe it's for the red light camera's?)
Aug 15, 2011
Iz NY also requires plates to be mounted in the front and rear. Option 2 looks better. Regardless of where the plate is placed, it will take some of the aesthetic beauty away from the front end. I have seen vehicles with the plate inside on the dashboard. Not sure if that is legal or for short term use.
Aug 15, 2011
gg_got_a_tesla Even if legal (and I have seen that being done by some drivers in California where the front plate is required), not a bright idea; imagine being impaled or beheaded by it in a crash situation!
Aug 15, 2011
drees That's a bracket made by Skene Design - I just bought one for my LEAF (I can only dream of buying a Tesla). Takes a bit of time to make sure it's lined up properly, but it's a very well made bracket and pretty adjustable. Wish it had some fore-aft adjustment (only angle and height are adjustable once the bracket is mounted) and the vertical supports were not quite so visible when looking down from the top. It's design should let you mount a plate on the front of nearly any car with minimal permanent penetrations.
Aug 15, 2011
Todd Burch vfx: Thanks for the graphic design eye.
NigelM: I looked through the Virginia motor vehicle regulations. There's no requirement for minimum height that I saw
Here's the regulation:
" 46.2-715. Display of license plates.
License plates assigned to a motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle, tractor truck, trailer, or semitrailer, or to persons licensed as motor vehicle dealers or transporters of unladen vehicles, shall be attached to the front and the rear of the vehicle..."
So it needs to be mounted--can't just be sitting on the dash.
drees: Thanks for the info. Hopefully Tesla will have a recommended mounting option...Or perhaps I can fight to change the law...
Aug 16, 2011
Cobos I was one of those posting in the design thread over on the Tesla forum for the mounting bracket. I believe most of Europe also require a front license plate. So I really hope Franz design that into the design. Yes I know that might brake up the flow of the design a bit, but if they don't the actual required license plate has to go somewhere and will probably look really really stupid with lots of different DIY mounting brackets![]()

Aug 16, 2011
Zorba Front license plates are indeed required in Europe. I'm thinking of putting stickers instead of the actual plate (front plate can be duplicate in Belgium). I might get fined but prefer that over putting holes in my new car.

roblab Just playing around. Another version.

Aug 16, 2011
Nik I don't know for sure, but I imagine that the dealer may be required to fit the plate before selling you the car. It's also likely that the EU-spec cars will have a slightly modified front end to provide a fixing point for the front plate, just as the space for the rear plate is usually a different shape to allow for the wider plates we have here. Compared to the other differences between building cars for different markets it's a very minor change to have different bumpers.

Timothy In California front plates are required. I was waiting for a friend at a stop light for an hour and counted--20% of cars do not have front plates. I hate 'em and don't put them on any of my 7 cars. I get stopped about every three or four years and tell the cop I had to take it off to have the car towed, and show them the plate in the trunk I plan to put back on. If I can't talk my way out of it I, get a ticket. Then I put the license plate back on, pay the nominal fine, take the plate off again--and repeat the cycle every 3-4 years.
Not perfect, but as least I can drive without the plates on the front!
Aug 16, 2011
Doug_G Tesla probably can't do that themselves, as it's illegal to cover the plate in Ontario and many other jurisdictions. Mind you, everyone puts on plastic plate protectors anyway.
Aug 16, 2011
Lloyd Mercedes and BMW delivers cars in California without front plates! You have to sign a waiver indicating that you don't want them to do that.
I have posed previously: I have no front plates on any of my cars X ~7 for the last 30 years. One fix it ticket with no fine.
Aug 16, 2011
MDR Super slick TEG, did you fab that yourself?!
Jan 13, 2013
efusco Doug_G, one other "con", at least a potential one, is that if anything catches on that plate frame it's going to rip those grill parts right off leading to an expensive repair.
Jan 13, 2013
mknox Looks good, Doug. I've been thinking about this and will probably just let them drill and mount mine to the front. I figure if/when I ever do sell the car, it'll likely be to someone in Ontario who's going to need the front plate anyway. I could probably just order a new nose cap if a buyer was ever that fussy about it.

Jan 13, 2013
Doug_G I considered that, but I don't think there would be any way of damaging it short of a front-end collision, which would probably damage it anyway. It doesn't stick out much, and it's well above the bottom of the car.

Here is another option that I came up with using a Blind Fastener Well nut.
Parts:
Blind Fastener Well nut 1/4"-20 X 1 (From West Marine)
Pan head Mach Screw 1/4"-20 X 3 1/2"
Nylock Nut 1/4"-20
Nut 1/4"-20
Flat Washer 1/4"
Press the Well nut into the Grille
mount the bolt and nuts to the license plate frame.
use the nylock nut behind the license plate frame. Tighten enough that you can still turn the bolt.
use the regular nut as a jam nut againtst the well nut. start all three bolts before tightening down all the way.

jvonbokel I've never seen an S with the nose cone removed, but hopefully somebody else who has can comment on the viability of this idea:
Could you put the plate *inside* the nose cone? I've seen people with tinted plate covers, so I'm guessing this wouldn't be a problem. Ideally, I'm picturing something where there's a light that illuminates the plate only while the car is on.
Mar 26, 2013
scriptacus The legality is debatable, especially if its not visible when the car is not running. In CA I once got a ticket for not having a front plate while my car was in an airport parking lot for a few days. With no front plate visible when parked you could end up in a similar situation. The above law is IL. It's very similar to CA, and I suspect most states that require front plates are the same.
Mar 26, 2013
jvonbokel Fair enough, I've heard of people getting tickets while parked as well. Perhaps along the same lines, a nosecone with a transparent rectangle in the middle, for the plate to show through.
One way or another, the Model S seems to have a unique advantage vs other cars, in that the nose cone is separate from the body, so multiple design possibilities arise for mounting a plate without disrupting aesthetics and/or drag. I'd be curious to see what Tesla engineers (or any other SME on plastics) would have to say about that.
Mar 26, 2013
GasDoc I mounted my plate using a Skene mount. It's "hanging" from the lower portion of the nosecone.
Had to remove it to have my paint armor applied and realized that a good feature of this mounting arrangement is that if you decide to remove the plate, the two holes drilled into the lower edge of the nosecone are not visible unless you get on the ground and look up.
Mar 26, 2013

From the Nissan Leaf forum thread (HERE) it sounds like TEG changed the part of the smoked plastic to clear, but other than that has been using it for a couple of years and is happy with it. I'm not sure how he got it shaped right though; in fact in the thread he says it's not exactly right, so it may be hard to make a Model S nose cone shape like that.

Would you mid postig a picture. FYI i checked today on pricing for a "spare" nosecone - with the badging over $500.

Darren Aw man, I got a ticket for no front plates last weekend in San Francisco
Do you think I can use double-sided tape just to get the fix-it signed off?
Mar 30, 2013
GasDoc Here are some pics I took as I was putting my Skene mount back on after getting paint armor.
![]()
This was taken from the ground, looking up at the nose cone.
![]()
Now the brackets are attached with one screw each and double sided foam. During initial install, they are held on by foam first and then the holes are drilled with the bit included with the Skene mount.
![]()
The license holder is now attached to the bracket. Both the height and angle are adjustable via hex screws.
![]()
Here is the final result.
When removed, nothing is visible to the casual inspector unless a person lays on the ground and looks up at the.nose cone to view the holes made by the screws.

gmontem Has anyone from California gotten in trouble by mounting a custom license plate on the front? I am tempted to mount a custom plate like this after I get my first Fix It ticket (I hope I will never get one).
Apr 19, 2013
ohmslaw Seems that would just draw unwanted police attention to the front end. I've been driving without a front plate in northern California for 11 years and never gotten a ticket. I would be afraid to put that fake plate on.
Jun 10, 2013
B-Chicago I like this option GasDoc. I just spoke to the Chicago SC and they said the factory preferred method in Illinois is to mount middle of the nose cone and to drill holes. Has anyone asked or heard if this kind of work would affect the Tesla repurchase agreement? I assume not if they are the ones recommending/performing the service. However, it seems that a car with a front nose holder from Illinois might be less desirable to a buyer from a state without the requirement.
Jun 10, 2013
dsm363 It wouldn't affect the repurchase price. Someone could always buy a new nose cone. I think it is $250 or so.

mkaps71 D-Splay Plate Temporary Plate Mount
There are several solutions. Meter maids target your highline vehicles because they believe you can afford the fine if you can afford the car. An excellent solution is http://www.d-splayplate.com. This mount allows you to pop your plate on when you park, thus avoiding those tickets. Holds for when you give to valet. If driving with no plate and stopped specifically for that or called out on it, have handy under seat and you can always pull out and mount stating "forgot to pop it back on after I got a car wash recently." I agree, placing a plate on the nose of your new tesla is like walking around with a piece of spinach in your teeth.

Merrill I have had several car that I did not want to put a front plate on and I live in California. Had an XK8 without a front plate for 16years with no ticket. Having said that and having purchased the multi-coat red I decided to plate the front. I did not like the plate installed as the factory would do it right in the middle of the nose cone. So for me the skene brackets were the best answer and the reason is you drill the 2 holes under the lower portion of the plastic nose cone. I wanted the plate to be low on the nose cone and this bracket allows the adjustment up and down as well as tilting. I think it looks very nice and if I decide to not have a plate on the front I can remove it and you will not see the 2 small holes drilled into the underside of the nose cone. Very versatile bracket.

Jun 5, 2014
ecarfan Here is what I did based on a post from another person. At Lowes Hardware I bought two 1/4" x 4" "J hooks". They are zinc plated, not stainless steel, so in harsh climates they will rust but in my mild California climate they'll be fine. I tried to find J hooks at WestMarine, a boating store, but they had nothing. These 4" J hooks are a bit too long (next size down was 3/16'x2 1/2' which is too short) so I cut them down with my Dremel. After inserting the hooks through the grill and the front plate mount I marked the threads with some tape so the end of the threaded part would be flush with the surface of the mounting plate. Cost less than $2.
I think this front plate mounting method is the easiest of all the methods I have seen and is very secure, actually easier to do than the zip ties, moves around less, and will last longer. Of course if you want a method that you can easily remove the front plate, this isn't it. (Note: in the lowermost photo the object attached to the bottom edge of the plate is a Fastrak external transponder)

BhamBen I've had a lot of conversations about the legality with other Tesla owners at different superchargers around the country. The common consensus is that most likely you would get a fix-it ticket where you have 15 days to put on your actual plate. Legality would ultimately have to be answered by each state that requires a front plate. So far I know of people in Texas, California and Washington state that are using the decal plates. it is very helpful to have them printed on reflective material as it means they show up when passing other cars at night, when going through tollbooth's and for border crossings. My wife and I have taken our car across the US Canadian border a number of times already with this decal front plate and have not had any problems. I keep my real front plate in my frunk with an extra copy of the decal as proof that I do have the actual plate.

MrClown I love the idea but I've been wondering about the legality of this too. In Colorado at least, this would apparently fall under:
but:
Since there is no intent to defraud (the intent is simply to not drill holes in my expensive car), I don't think you could be found guilty of a felony (IANAL though). In theory it would just be a ticket for not having an appropriate front plate. I probably wouldn't carry around a second "forged" document in my frunk though. No need to risk facing two counts.

Aug 20, 2015
BhamBen I wouldn't think that a front plate would be necessary to check speed with a police radar gun as many states don't require a front plate. Legality would ultimately have to be answered by each state that requires a front plate. The Intent behind the use of a copied legal document would help determine whether or not there is consequence from that use. I personally don't see this as forgery, it is a copy of a document that you have legally purchased but for personal reasons you are choosing to display a copy instead of the actual document. People make copies of their drivers license all the time for purposes of opening bank accounts transferring real estate or buying a car. The reasons for doing this are because you want to obey the law, maintain Aerodynamics, and not drill holes in the front of your expensive car; Not to defraud or commit a crime. That is just my 2 cents.

Chris TX A forgery is a forgery. The only way a paper drivers license works is when you get a temporary one from the DMV. The same thing goes for license plates, but in Texas it's from the tax office.

SW2Fiddler Paper (copy of) a TDL also "works" to authenticate a signed power-of-attorney for the purpose of title transfer, in lieu of the seller accompanying the buyer to the tax office in person.
I have a front plate, so no 'skin in this game,' but find the discussion very interesting.

Chris TX The context I was referring to was in the presence of a police officer that pulls you over for having a fake license plate on your car

mikeg561 I finally broke down and order "the Law" front plate holder.
But, I still wonder, has anyone every received a ticket for no front plate? I have heard this is a BIG issue driving into LAX airport, but other than that? Is it still a fix-it ticket?

finallybuying I did receive a ticket for not having a front plate on my Honda about 10 years ago in Palo Alto, CA. I was parked in a 2 hour time limit spot, downtown. The meter maid kept track of the time the cars had been parked by the plate number (not chalk), I think. He must have walked by the front, unable to read a plate, and simply given me a ticket.
I had had to pay a fee (about $50??) and -worst part- show up and have it inspected at the police department. They had to sign something saying I had fixed it. I didn't mind the fee. The hour I had to waste on the inspection was annoying and made me subsequently alway run with a front plate.

mknox Depends on where you are. Here in Ontario, Canada I don't believe you can go very long without a ticket unless you live near the Quebec border. Quebec does not require front plates and cops are probably more used to seeing cars without them and will leave you alone.

HustleSimmons I just did the setup off the youtube video with 3" toggle bolts instead of J hooks like Andrew was thinking about. Overall nice solution. I'd get longer bolts next time. Had to push in the bracket to cover the distance from the bracket to the grill. And the honeycomb openings in the grill aren't big enough for the toggle wings to pass through without bending them a little to widen the gap. But it was all good otherwise.

roblab The statistics in CA are that 10% do not have a front plate. If an officer wishes to ticket you, you might mention that xx number of cars have passed without a front plate -- but I wouldn't.
My last infraction I used Velcro. The law says "affixed". The officer came out, wiggled the plate, it did not fall off, and he signed it off. Then I drove off a block and removed it. That was 5 cars ago.
It is almost in the realm of having to walk in front of your car waving a red flag to warn oncoming cars. There is no need for a front plate but to use laser radar, and that has improved so that a front plate is not necessary for that.

JMG Actually, I think law enforcement says that the argument for having a front plate is that it makes it easier to identify stolen vehicles or vehicles of interest. In other words, if a video shows a vehicle involved in a hit & run, or even worse, a major terrorist attack...if it has both front and rear plates it will make it easier to identify via security and dash cam videos.
However, I am running with no plate in Texas and crossing my fingers. Around the Dallas area, if you see a nice vehicle (BMW, Merc, Audi, Porsche, etc.) I would say there is probably a greater than 60% chance it does not have a front plate.

Chris TX Same here. I was given a warning a month ago by a state trooper for no front plate. I'm sure it would have been a ticket if I didn't have my CHL handy

Pawlan It is required in Calif and it does serve a function if you use HOV lanes or drive through fastrak toll bridge lanes. Their cameras read the license.
When I picked up my new car last week I had Tesla install the front license plate frame right there in Fremont. They had a custom black plastic solid plate holder made for them that fits neatly below the T. The bottom of the back of this plate wraps around the bottom of the grill. They do not want you to put it over the air vents on the bottom. The service manager also warned me to not use a decorative cover frame over the plate. That can cause the radar sensors to be erratic and show alerts when there are no cars in front of you. He also suggested flexing the plate to maintain the curve of the nose.
