Cinergi's Model S part 1

    Live broadcast!

So, I've been working on putting together what I need to do live broadcasts using my nice Canon Vixia HF M50 ... I could use my iPhone, sure -- but wanted the better video

I'm waiting to hear back from Tesla corporate communications on whether I can live broadcast / record the delivery (since a Tesla employee would be on camera for everything he said). If I can't do that, what I'll attempt to do is record the arrival of the car and whatever else happens up until the point the Tesla individual arrives (it'll be separate -- hooray for no sales license in Mass. yet), and then do additional live broadcasts throughout the coming weeks where I do Q&A with anyone and everyone.

I'll be using Livestream for everything. You'll probably want to follow me and just check into the site ahead of time. My Livestream account: Ben Goodwin on Livestream.

My car is scheduled to be here Thursday or Friday. No idea which day or what time, so timing will be tricky. I'll post information as I get it.

I got their Livestream Broadcaster device. Includes 3 free months of their pro service, too. Figured it'd give me what I need to do the broadcast and if I really hate it, I can return it. Was thinking of getting an external encoder so I wasn't tied to Livestream but the idea of a portable device on top of the camera instead of dealing with a computer, software, etc. was intriguing ...

I had bought the Cube 4 weeks before the Broadcaster came out... It's a great deal... I might buy it and try and sell the Cube.

I will certainly tune in if I can!

Cinergi, NASA uses less technology to monitor rocket launches :) about as excessive as expected though.
How long before the move to the new garage in South Boston? Did you have a 14-50 installed already?
If you find you need a charge, my 75A J-1772 OpenEVSE is done (not connected to the 100A breaker yet, but that's only a few hours to finish, I have the pipe, wire and breaker already). If you bought the dual chargers and need to test, I'm only in Randolph (15 miles South of Boston)

I close 11/1 so moving that weekend hopefully. I'll have a 6-50 installed in prep for an HPC some day. I have two months of overlap between the new place and my current place so I'll be good for charging in case the 6-50 doesn't get installed by then. Thanks tho!

I just told my wife, or should I say my Tesla widow, the following: "You think I'm crazy, there is a guy up in Boston live-streaming his Model S delivery!". Her immediate deadpan response: "And there is another guy in Pittsburgh *watching* the livestream of the guy with the Boston Model S delivery."

    Spot. On.

the model S indeed got attention as soon as it got offloaded!
Wonder how many will be talking about it and search the teslamotors website ot go to the natick mall (if i understoud correctly)
    how many sales?

i am curious what that truckdriver thought when driving out the tesla! anyhow, he could handle it quite well!
  • Oct 12, 2012
    mcornwell
If this is any indication of things to come, I'm going to have to add 5-10 minutes to any trip I make, to answer parking lot questions. I thought I got asked a lot of questions when I drive my wife's Volt, but that's nothing compared to the attention the Tesla is going to draw.

When Dadaleus gave me a ride a few weeks ago, we were getting thumbs up while waiting for the signal to change by the twenty-something year olds at the pizza place, who were eating on the patio. I'm guessing this will be common place.

Is that the NEMA 14-50 plug or is there an adapter on the UMC featured in one of your charging pictures?
  • Oct 12, 2012
    cinergi
The Model S UMC is adapter-based, so what you see on there is the 14-50 adapter. I'll take some video and go through all that stuff as part of this thread.

Identical config to mine except you went silver for the wheels it looks like. Nice going!

Good to see VINs in the 200s!

Nice video. I am impressed by the rig they delivered it on. That's the same setup a lot of high end racing teams use to haul their cars. Riding the lift up and down with an expensive car is just as fun as it looks :)
  • Oct 13, 2012
    SCW-Greg
Awesome Ben, and thank you for taking the time to appease all of us here still yet waiting for ours.

Though, I think all of us could just feel the tension in waiting, to just get in and drive!

When I get mine, I'm going *try* and go quietly and quickly away to drive it. To get some needed intimate Q time out of my system with the car, until the charge is down. Then I'll be able to relax and answer questions.

Maybe take delivery in the stealth of night! ;)
  • Oct 13, 2012
    Tommy
Not to put a jinx on any future deliveries via this method; however in looking at the video, there doesn't seem be anything(other than the driver's self awareness) to prevent the car from rolling right off the ramp while the ramp is still in the air. I didn't see any chock blocks or other safety devices to prevent the car from rolling right off the ramp, just the skill of the driver.
  • Oct 13, 2012
    efusco
Same thought, seems like there should at least be a chock at the end of the lift.

    Great videos! Thanks.

I'm curious about you being able to open the door by hitting the key fob. That's got to be a bug that needs to be fixed, right? I'm glad the delivery specialists are pointing out some of the quirky things, like how to get passengers in the car. Hopefully as they get more experienced they'll be able to fix some of these things.

    Anyway, great tips, thanks!

    LMAO! Nicely done.

    - - - Updated - - -

Yeah I sent Tesla ownership that video to report it as a bug

    - - - Updated - - -

Roger that! I'm all charged up (the camcorder that is!) and heading down to finish the video of the touchscreen that got interrupted and redo the GPS/Nav and a couple other things that didn't go well when I tried to record it in the garage which kills signal. Unfortunately it's dark out now so that walk around and driving stuff will happen later.

What would be a fun live broadcast for folks? Driving seems fun but since I can't really read chat to respond to folks while driving  it seems like it would get boring pretty quick. The broadcast method would give you all a chance to do a live Q&A / show-n-tell with me ...

Forgot to mention I also have a video of me doing J1772. It's really important to watch and understand. I found out the hard way and ended up calling Tesla for help LOL
That'll come soon, and I'll get it posted in the right thread, too. I apparently have to wait for the current render (ETA 1 hour 40 minutes) to complete before I can begin editing another (much shorter) video.

I *LOVE* that the suggested videos from YouTube (on your unlocking video) include a video on space aliens, a plasma torus anti-gravity generator and an energy rifle. I think YouTube pretty much has this one pegged
  • Oct 13, 2012
    STxTesla
    Ben,
The screen indicated that charging was complete and the estimated range was at 223 miles. I would think that the charged estimated mile range would be a lot closer to 265 or so.
    What's up with that?
  • Oct 13, 2012
    Robert.Boston
    Standard vs. range.
  • Oct 13, 2012
    cinergi
2 things. I set the car to show projected range there instead of rated range. Second, I did a standard mode charge. I had 240 miles of rated range which is exactly right for a standard charge.
  • Oct 13, 2012
    STxTesla
Thanks for the clarifications. I just read up on the two charging modes and now understand that the Standard mode is the 80% charge which is recommended for battery longevity.
I was not aware of the two charging modes....(I need to start reading all of the charging/battery posts to keep up with this kind of info).
    Thanks again.
  • Oct 13, 2012
    Robert.Boston
Standard on the Model S is 90% of Max, for 240 miles (as @cinergi noted). This is the same battery SOC as the Roadster, but the Model S doesn't hide the bottom 10% of the battery in standard mode.
  • Oct 13, 2012
    bluetinc
    Hey Cinergi,

Out of curiosity, could you duplicate the drivers door opening when you pressed the fob? Listening to the video it sounded like you might have done a quick triple click instead of a double?

Thanks for all the great videos!

    Peter
  • Oct 13, 2012
    Babylonfive
Maybe a triple click is meant to open the door?

  • Oct 13, 2012
    cinergi
Interesting. I'll try triple-click. I've never had it happen other than that one time.
  • Oct 13, 2012
    shokunin
I thought the door opening was kind of cool if there was a special click combo for that. Wouldn't want that to be standard as you wouldn't be able to lock the car again without closing the door.

Thanks for the videos Ben, it's way more informative than a regular test drive!
  • Oct 13, 2012
    cinergi
So I messed up the render of the touchscreen video. Gotta redo it. So that's gonna be ready later tomorrow. In the meantime, I rendered the J1772 ordeal -- the one I think is very important for owners and reservationists to see and understand because I ended up calling Tesla trying to figure out how to detach the cable from my car so I could drive home! Even worse, my first attempt wedged it in so even the correct method didn't work until I realized what had happened and shoved it back in so the unlock mechanism could work. The video's ETA to Youtube is about 45 minutes. When it's live, it'll be here: Tesla Model S J1772 Charging - YouTube

I put 300 miles on the car since I got it yesterday. I just got back from a nice long highway drive. I got some video of the tech package nav system in action ... so that'll be coming soon, too

    Norbert
Great videos, very to the point! Thanks!

    - - - Updated - - -

I'm kind of wondering whether/how the J1772 adapter could be improved. Maybe it could have a ring around the middle of it, and when you turn the ring, it pushes out two bolts, one in each direction, so that by turning the ring, you can separate the adapter form both the car and the j1772 handle, at once. Don't know if that would work, and something for another thread, probably.

Congrats! I just watched some parts of your livestream video, but that delivery truck is scary! The way he has to back out the car on that ramp which is hanging from those cables. Seems like a very fragile way to deliver those cars with.
  • Oct 14, 2012

I guess truck drivers are well-trained at not going backwards too far, though. ;)
  • Oct 14, 2012
    widodh
I guess so. Still, the way that ramp is hanging on those cables is just scary when you have to put a >2ton car on top of it.

Nevertheless, it went fine with cinergi, he has his Model S! (Yes, I'm jealous!)
  • Oct 14, 2012
    cinergi
In about 5 hours :scared: the touchscreen video should be live on youtube: Tesla Model S Touch Screen - YouTube

The HD video behind that is 4.4 GB in size LOL. Anyway, it's long and unindexed (sorry, I don't have THAT much time on my hands) but will walk you through literally everything in the touchscreen in depth. It's one software revision behind so the latest updates (e.g. driver profiles) aren't in there. Perhaps what I'll do is add supplemental videos every time an update is made and post that...

    - - - Updated - - -

Thanks! Indeed, I felt the void personally until I got the car, which is why I'm doing these now.

I've noticed that when I start turning, front-side lights light up the front left & right of the car ... I didn't think that was a feature / I don't remember anyone talking about that!
  • Oct 14, 2012

Having lights that illuminate where you are going when turning is something I've missed in every car since the DS-21. No amount of brightness can make up for the lights not being pointed in the direction that you're going.

The new vids are helpful. I'm suprised how complicated charging at stations is though. Did they tell you how to do that or did you figure out in your own? That's great to bear about the adaptive headlights. I wonder why it's not listed as a feature like Lexus does?

Thanks for taking the time to film and post the videos. You are awesome!! These are a MUST WATCH item for all future Model S owners. The DS who will deliver mine will wonder why I'm not asking all these questions

The only thing I asked about was proper usage of the J1772 adapter (put it on the connector first); though I can't see how one way or the other would make any difference. The rest was figuring it out on my own -- but that's my nature. I have no problem trying whatever, clicking every button to see what happens, etc. And of course each type of charging station is different. It's more complicated for the Model S, too (obviously the adapter, but also the fact that you need to unlock it ... which I shouldn't have to do so hopefully we can get that fixed / removed from the list of instructions).

When my DS showed up, I challenged him to tell me something I didn't already know hehe. He actually did. And given that I'm an ADDICT on these forums and whatnot, that's not too shabby!

Done! Set aside an hour to go through everything you ever wanted to know about the touch screen

Hi Ben, thanks for these videos they're really great.

With the hour long video, is that in HD as well? At the moment it isn't showing it as an option, but I figure maybe youtube is just catching up, in which case I'd rather wait and watch it in 'HD'! A bit more detail...

    Thanks,

Yes it's HD. It does look like Youtube's catching up on it. Only showing 480p right now.
