Did anyone get a call/email when they were issued a VIN? I was reading the forums about some of the website glitches and upon signing into my page, my RN number disappeared and it was surprisingly replace by a VIN number. Curious to know if I'm ever going get any correspondence about status updates or just when the car is ready for pickup? Anxious like everyone else.

    What did you order?
  • Feb 29, 2016
    Gas Guzzler

P90D with most of the premium upgrades, 6 seater without the onyx rims. Ordered 2/10 and noticed the VIN assignment on 2/26. I've input the info in the ModelXTracker also.

    First off congrats!

at sequence 17xxx With Vin's assigned for P90D I hope it's a few more weeks before the first tranche of P90d vin assignments are done and they start with the 90's. I'm 14xxx and confirmed a 90D so good to see they are past me with vin assignments for P90 reservation holders. Am assuming they will stop at 30k sequence number for P90 and then start at the beginning of the line for 90D vin assignment.

yes I know vin didn't mean production, but it does mean closer than I was without a vin
  • Feb 29, 2016
    ohmman
Don't forget they have to go back to the beginning of the P90Ds without premium and roll through those. We're still just on P90D-Premium. A few more weeks, I seriously doubt. Love to be proven wrong.

    Thanks highedu!

Sending good vibes your way to get your VIN soon! Maybe you'll see me on the Bay Bridge this Summer - Possibly Spring?.?.?.

Are there really a lot of P90Ds without premium ?
  • Feb 29, 2016
    Colby Boles
There are definitely a few of us. The MX tracker currently says 19.3% of production orders are non-premium, but like you are implying I would agree that the percentage would likely be lower for P90D orders. I also chose the least popular paint color (Sliver Metallic), which less than 5% of people chose, which also could delay things.
  • Feb 29, 2016
    ssiegler
The ratio of % Silver Metallic Delivered vs Ordered is 66%, so it is slightly under-indexing for delivery, but the sample size is fairly small, so it's probably just noise.
  • Mar 1, 2016
    elguapo
Gas Guzzler - Don't expect a call or email from TM until it's closer to delivery - unless you have a proactive DS. They don't really have anything to tell you. Best I can tell you is you will likely go into production in 5-6 weeks. How long you stay in production? That's a different story.
  • Mar 1, 2016
    Aljohn
There seems to be a number of P90Ds with Premium Pkg that have not received VINs. I wouldn't take the latest few VIN assignments of any trend. Looking only at what is, and forgetting what isn't can lead to very false conclusions. There is still a long ways to go. As hopeful as I can be, my P90D Premium, Ultra HI Fi, etc. has no VIN after 2 years of reservation and 3 months since confirmed. Any guesses?? I have run out of rationale.

I reserved three years ago, and I have a VIN, What was your Reservation number?
  • Mar 2, 2016
    Aljohn
@CTemp222 My reservation # was 913x reserved in March 2014. Latest VIN assigned on 2/1 was res. #18,332 reportedly reserved in May 2015. Same color and similar Config P90Ds.
Seems odd to say the least. Hopefully Tesla is getting things together.
  • Mar 2, 2016
    Mike_F
Not really sure what being assigned a VIN actually meant so I emailed my DS to clarify. Not sure if it did, you be the judge:
"If a car has been assigned a VIN number, it means it has been sequenced and queued for production. It does not mean your vehicle is currently in active production."
Does anyone have any idea what "active production" means? It sounds like getting a VIN may just be part of the paperwork and does not really point to any real changes in actually getting a MX.

  • Mar 2, 2016
    pvogel
Getting a VIN means they have started sourcing parts and know roughly when the production line will start on your car. It definitely does not mean anything with respect to when you will get your car yet. With Model S once you get your VIN it's about 5 weeks to getting your car.
  • Mar 2, 2016
    LeonardD
While being assigned a VIN is an indication that they started sourcing parts for your car, and is not an indication that your car will be completed any time soon, it is still nice to have a VIN, because a VIN is a Vehicle Identification Number. The VIN makes the car a little more real.
  • Mar 2, 2016
    Aljohn
PVogel and LeonardD. I agree the VIN in itself doesn't mean production. The statement "If a car has been assigned a VIN number, it means it has been sequenced and queued for production. It does not mean your vehicle is currently in active production." seems reasonable. But it would seem there is a process. One would think it is orderly. Today, VIN was assigned to a 90D. So by the DS reply, there is now a 90D that is now sequenced and queued for production ahead of the P90Ds, which wasn't suppose to be the case. (early 2016 vs mid 2016). Not wishing ill but trying to understand the logic or process is challenging. Not to mention the 90D that now has a VIN was reserved months after my reservation.

I really have to stop watching the activity looking for logic.
  • Mar 2, 2016
    EboMike
I guess the VIN just means that your car is officially in a queue. There is probably a hierarchy of queues, but having a VIN presumably means that you're in one of the lower-tier ones.

My 90D just got a VIN today. I don't expect to see the car until August or even later, but seeing the full VIN is an uplifting feeling.
  • Mar 2, 2016
    andrewket
I would allow myself some excitement receiving a VIN with a 90D order. It may mean that the take rate for P90Ds was less than expected, thus moving up 90D orders. I would not expect to have a VIN now and still take delivery in August (in the US). I'd expect it earlier. But, you never know...
  • Mar 2, 2016
    EboMike
Good point. I think I'll allow myself some excitement right now!

    (excited squealing)

Okay, I'm back. I don't think the VIN indicates the exact order in which the cars are manufactured (I think this has already been proven multiple times on this forum), but it's still somewhat of a guideline. More precisely, with my VIN being short of 2000 and me being about 15000 into the US queue (if you include all US sig/prod reservations), I would assume that my car will be more or less car #2000 being produced, give or take a couple of hundred. Assuming 300 cars already delivered, to get my car by August, they'd have to produce cars at a rate of around 75 cars per week.
  • Mar 2, 2016
    CaliX

Mine is a 90D too so it is exciting to see my VIN# for it. You are probably right about August which is what my DS told me.

Even within production 90D the VIN assignment seems to be a little random. One more data point. 90D Res# 2xxx Confirmed 12/18/2015 without VIN assignment today.

When in January did you confirm? My confirmation date is 1/11/16. If yours was after that, you may have fallen victim to one of the classic traps, the arbitrary cut-off date.

    - - - Updated - - -

That's an interesting data point. You should be well ahead of me. I'm trying to decode your design choices - but yours seem to be close to mine. And I don't see any red flags in your configuration (like standard interior, black onyx wheels, etc).
  • Mar 2, 2016
    quartzav
If I recall correctly mine is very close to ohmman's
    Decoded options:
    90D | Pearl White | 20" silver | 6-seat | Ultra white interior | obeche wood matte | black headliner | Subzero package | premium upgrades | autopilot | 72A | smart air suspension | towing package

Did you get the Ultra Hi-Fi Stereo? Per CmdrThor's post, that seemed to be the only major difference between his configuration and mine, and he doesn't have a VIN yet either. Never heard about that being a deciding factor though.
  • Mar 2, 2016
    quartzav
Hehe, no Ultra Hi-Fi. Maybe it is mysteriously turning into a factor now. Either that or someone at Tesla just throw a dart to decide who get a VIN today. At least we know Feb 2013 reservation date is not a deciding factor. BTW, factory delivery was selected as well.
  • Mar 2, 2016
    CaliX
Maybe location, How optioned your X is, or it could come down to which parts they can source the soonest. Or maybe someone in the VIN department got some good news and felt like making people happy today...

    aesculus
Got my VIN today too for a 90D. It's pretty loaded with Fremont delivery (no P or L obviously and no towing). VIN 001526 which surprises me that it is so low. When I started this game I expected to be 15,000 or so. Hope that's enough to work the bugs out when added to the ~1000 sigs and founders.
  • Mar 2, 2016
    quartzav
That makes me think if there is a relationship between the low confirmed number of orders (inferred by low VIN) and the decidedly slow production ramp...on a second thought, I will just continue to freak out all night about being thrown into back of the line by not ordering Hi-Fi.

Wow, looks like the 90D's are moving down the line. When did you reserve/order?

Btw...I didn't get the premium package/air suspension so that should delay my order.

While I am happy for everyone who got their VINS today, I am not happy for myself. I did not order P or Ludi, Towing or UHF sound but did get everything else. Perhaps it is location based, but I reserved in 2012 and had a low number 184x. I also configured on the same day, but before I received the e-mail. Confirmed on 12/2. Soon hopefully, I will get my VIN, but I think the issue order has nothing to do with confirmed orders or confirm dates, other than only confirmed orders will get VINs.:crying:

I'm really thinking that a LOT of reservation holders were slow to order, or maybe even have not ordered. That was a big reason why reservations were opened up continuously faster with each group -- people were not placing orders initially due to lack of info. By the time they got to RN 10,000 or so, I think Tesla just said to heck with it and opened orders up to all US reservation holders. My RN was about 20,000. I placed my order on 1/12, after having access to the design studio for about 8 days, and confirmed on 1/19, VIN issued on 2/16. A colleague of mine was RN 66xx and he initially held off on his order until he could see the car, but then finally ordered about the time the Meet the X invites went out. He was issued his VIN yesterday for a P90D config identical to mine, but midnight silver with black seats and carbon fiber, otherwise identical.

I'm also thinking there are a heck of a lot more 90D's and even 70D's than P90D's...
  • Mar 2, 2016

I am seriously considering to change my 70D to a loaded P90D and skip out on the Model 3.

Yeah, I was originally planning to get the 90D but convinced myself that my sanity was worth the upgrade - also being able to take all the kids in the Tesla rather than our minivan this summer, as the primary Model S rear jump-seat rider has grown out of it.

I "think" I have a VIN. When I log into the Tesla website I see Model X 001984 where I used to see my RN before. Is that the VIN? I thought VIN's were supposed to be much longer.

Specs on my X: 90D, Blue, Black/Black, fully loaded except standard 20" wheels and is a 6 seater.

That is the last 6 digits of a VIN. Actual VIN can be seen in the page source and will start with 5YJX, the first 3 digits indicating Tesla North America, the 4th digit being the body type (X), etc. See the VIN decoder thread here in the Model X forums. Should be 17 digits.

Look at it this way. There are not all that many in CA that got VINs yesterday, and one production is ramped 1k or so cars ahead of you will only make a week's difference. The important thing is that they are at least starting 90D on not only working on P90D anymore.
  • Mar 3, 2016
    EboMike
Do we have any evidence that the production is in full swing now? It's certainly encouraging that they assigned 1000 VINs over the course of a day, and it's great that my DS said the expected "ready" month for my 90D with a 019xx VIN is April, but I'm not convinced yet Tesla is able to instantly switch from less than a hundred per month to an order of magnitude more.

VIN (between 1600 and 1700) assigned in last 24 hours.

New to TMC so point me in the right direction please. I have scrolled through this thread but don't see that many posts regarding ACTUAL deliveries on Production (non-Signature) Model X P90D. MY DS has been useless so hoping I will get some insights/answers here.

My Model X P90D was reserved 1/2013, ordered 12/2/2015 and confirmed on 12/9/2015. I got my VIN number assigned around 12/22 (not exactly sure). VIN number is 0308 and I ordered basically everything except L (22" Onyx Black, Tan Leather Seats, Seven Seat, Autopilot, Premium Upgrades. Ultra High Fidelity Sound, and Subzero Weather Package).

Just checked back on the MyTesla page today and it now gave me a total and asked for me to pay for the car (which I immediately did). I've e-mailed my DS a few times over the past two weeks for an update but haven't heard anything. I would not have paid until I had inspected the car and we're ready to take delivery. It would not have effected delivery time. There are horror stories of people paying for their cars and not receiving them for months.
  • Mar 3, 2016

I'm not picking up at the factory, oddly enough, mine is Pearl White with White interior, all pkgs and 20" wheels, and my white one hasn't got a VIN. However my Black on Black one has got a VIN (002007). Details in Sig.

Maybe the White seats are holding it back a bit, while they work out the seat thickness issue, and whether the new seats will tear the same way as the current ones.

Agree with this, paying in full is a rookie mistake, until you're there to pickup the car. Just take them a cashier's check instead.

Well, since this is my third Tesla and the last two they had my money for WAY more than three months, I'm not too worried that they will stiff me. As the President of the Los Angeles Tesla Club, they usually do their best to keep me happy :)

Hello, it might be of interrest to you all that production reservations in Norway recieved a invitation to configure to day.

Here's what I don't get. My original reservation sequence #, back when they were given in March, 2015, was 16,300. As I mentioned up-thread, I confirmed on February 18th and had VIN# 1645 assigned on March 2nd. Back when I bought one of the very first production Model S's in November, 2012 (P-83) I received a VIN # of 1571. I do not understand how my X could possibly have a VIN # virtually the same as my S. What happened to the 15,000 folks in front of me? Not complaining but seems very odd.

    Several reasons.
    1. Only a small subset of reservation holders actually placed an order.
    2. For the VIN, the sequence number is irrelevant. Only the confirmation date, the car configuration, the current moon phase and the alignment of the Cassiopeia constellation matter.
    3. The Model S VINs have no relevance to the Model X VINs. They VIN sequence started back at 00001 with production X models.

Just for the heck of it what was your reservation number for the Model S? My neighbor reported the same behavior for their S as we are seeing for the X. They jumped ahead of all sorts of people in the reservation queue then too.

I think that answer #1 is it. For delivery its #1 and #2.

With the Model S, I was Production reservation #83. So ultimately getting a VIN of 1571 made sense:1,200 Sigs, 200 Founders, 150 company cars. The math doesn't work on the X. If in fact the numbers we have been assigned represent a sequential VIN #, then there are huge number of fence sitters and/or cancelations.
  • Mar 4, 2016
    aesculus
The VINs start over on production as well as Signatures and Founders. So a production VIN of 2000 on a Model X could be 50 Founders (~15 original + 35 fbr) + 1050 Signatures would make the total amount of Model X VINs assigned to be more around 3100 cars.

I thought the S did the same thing? If so, you waited a bit before you confirmed?

All these Model X VINs past around 700 or so were done around the first of the year. Its pretty well known (but not proven) that a lot of Model X reservation holders did not reserve when they were first asked to. Some cancelled, some moved over to the S and there are lots who are waiting to see/try one, waiting for QC to improve or waiting for some new feature (bigger battery, folding seats, AP 2.0 ...).

Or in my case the astrological constellation alignment wasn't in our favor when we confirm the order, Tesla just skipped us and give VINs to you guys instead

Well I just got off the phone with tesla 800 sales because my DS is not responding to my calls or emails, that was an interesting call... I told them I just noticed on the 2nd my 90D has a VIN and I had been told by my DS it would be August at the earliest before I would get my X and he said that sounds about right because they are only doing P90D's right now but he let me look at you order and see whats going on then he came back and said your right you do have a VIN he said it's the first 90D he's seen with a VIN. Then he said let me put you on hold again and check with my supervisor to see if its a mistake and he came back with a sense of urgency in his voice and said no it legit and it is going into production now. I said well I need 30 days to get my end together he said I can't give you exact timing or why this happened but I will contact your DS now and have them get in contact with you ASAP.

Don't know what to think now.

Sorry, #1 is definitely wrong. I reserved almost 3 years ago. Confirmed and locked in my order 12/2/2015. Still no VIN. He did just jump in front of me and 15,000 other people, probably because he ordered the correct combination of features that they are ready to assemble right now. It is just frustrating that they don't tell us what the magic combo is, so that those of us that ordered 3 years ago can get our freaking cars....

    @VFan

DWebb66 is right. So far not a single person who has ordered BlackOnyx Wheels on their car have had a car delivered. If you were to order today and pick this option it would tell you delivery would be the second half of the year. Several people have been told September but Tesla isn't saying anything if you inquire. There have been people who have paid the change fee of $500 and changed their wheels to silver or went with 20 inch wheels. Tesla has recently downgraded the mileage with 22 inch wheels vs 20 inch wheels. There is also something about if you order 22 inch wheels what type of tire you get. You may want to read the other forums about 22" wheels.

Looks fairly obvious from other sub threads that the dump of VINs was exclusive to Californians with 90D and 6-7 seats, auto pilot and premium. If that does not define your order please step aside and let the others step forward. Seems TM wants ease of delivery in March to Californians to fulfill prophecy of quoted numbers of delivery for Q1.

Perhaps the configuration choices and the confirmation date together makes the difference, and then add some random numbers for fun. I hope more groups get VINs each week.

They have around 1,000 P90D cars that were provided VINS going back as far as December 23rd that still have not been delivered. These also all had autopilot and premium options and are somewhere in the production process. So far they still have delivered less than 150 production cars. To think they will be able to produce a 1000 90Ds and get them to the purchasers by the end of the month is very very unlikely. People are thinking the reason they picked CA cars was because they are trying to get them done before the end of the quarter. This is not necessarily the reason they decided to pick CA 90D cars. They are much more likely, but still doubtful to get the P90Ds orders which are already in progress to the customer by the end of March rather than the ones which have just been given VINs recently. Since starting to produce the X's very few production cars have taken less than 7 weeks and almost all more than 9 -10 weeks from the time assigned a VIN to delivery. Most of the original people getting a VIN got it from 12/23 to 1/18 and have yet to see their car. It has been between 8-11 weeks and counting. I know if the P90Ds were to start showing up next week it would be LUDICROUS and make some P90D buyers real happy. Only time will tell.

My DS is hard to get in touch with. When I did, he confirmed still on track for March delivery for my p90dl with everything. I do believe him. Will see what happened. My excitement died down a bit due to the 100 kW option in the near future. Felt waited 2 years and get a nearly outdated car for 150k. Oh well, never chase technology I guess.

Yeah, it's annoying. With the additional weight etc of the X it really could use the additional 10 kWh (kWh is energy btw; kW is power). If the 100 kWh pack is released soon, the change will go down as the X sig and early production tax. But Tesla has to draw the line somewhere, and no matter what you do, some group is going to be unhappy.
  • Mar 6, 2016
    Darryl
As I replied to the post about the 100 kWh battery we would have been nieve to think they weren't continue to work on the batteries but there is nothing which indicated it will be released anytime soon. There is also nothing saying there will not be a 95 before there is a 100. To get from a 90 to a 95 in the current platform is extremely difficult but to then get to 100 is exponentially more difficult. I had read 100 will be the last for the current platform. Future batteries will be on a new platform designed and developed at the Gigafactory which is currently a year behind schedule and by the time it is finished another plant will be needed because of the Model 3 demand (at least that is what they are hoping. )

Also there is nothing in the post to indicate the increase will happen anytime soon. It is very doubtful it will come out during the 2016 model timeframe. For Tesla it would be better financially to come in the 2017 model year (January 2017) and charge an update fee for 2016 owners.

Right now now all is a rumor and nothing to worry about b

@SMSMD. It may be a few days earlier but Thursday is worse case. I probably delayed it as I put together a list of things I wanted them to verify wouldn't be an issue, like leaking Gulf Wing doors, wind noise from front doors etc. The list of things based on what other users have posted. Things which you may not find at just looking at the car. I sent it to them last week and they sent it to the service department. She told me last week they were going through the list.
