markwj A good test to see if it works is to sit in the car with the ignition on, aircon on, but car in park. You should see about 1 to 3 Amps shown on that display.
Then, SMS "FEATURE 13 1", and the amps should go to zero. After all, you're going 0mph.
The feature is far from perfect, but pretty usable. Nothing we can do about the word 'Amps'. You may find the display flickers every now and again (changing to a weird value, not your speed) - again nothing we can do about that as once in a while the car will win and display the real Amps (as opposed to our faked speed). Watch the video for more information on why that is.

Vip I'm new to the OVMS installation and currently going through the installation guide. I have the module and and antenna. I just need to get a SIM card.
Can anyone tell me if the first post (with all the info) on this thread is still valid. Especially the AT&T information about the SIM card and password. The first post hasn't been updated since 2013 and just want to make sure nothing major has changed.
May 5, 2015
AEdennis A lot of us moved over to h2owireless. SIM cards at Amazon are at $0.01 and the service every 90 days is $10... Search for that in the thread...

tomsax I wrote up instructions for H2O Wireless.

AEdennis Thanks Tom, on a road trip, and working off mobile devices...

jaanton My experience with H2O Wireless was a little different. This was about 5 months ago. I got a penny sim card from Amazon, but the H2O wireless site would not let me activate it without some info I didn't have. I did an online chat and the chat told me I needed to buy an activation pack at a retailer. Going to Target, they didn't have anything other then the more costly plan activation kits. But, the sim card came from some online company which had a website with a form for activation. That took about a day to work. I think they just had the activation packets and did it for me from the information I put on the form. Pretty horrible. On the plus side, after that was done, I can refill directly on the H2O site.
I think I got my sim and activation from U.S ANYSIM (they sold the sim through amazon.) Then http://www.h2owirelessnow.com
I agree about not giving any of these sites any critical information. I use a unique password for them and my credit card company has a way to get unique card numbers for online payments. That's the way to go. Those online card numbers can have repeat charges, but the repeat charges have to come from the same name making them hard to steal.
May 11, 2015
hjr can you refill H2O by buying a PIN at a target store and therefore not have to give credit card info to the shaky H2O site? Ihave been using ATT and it is much more expensive and I am getting a bit tired of paying for it.
May 14, 2015
simonog This helped me: mine was working all along. I had not realised that the word Amps was fixed and so assumed the digital speedo hadn't taken. Sorry for the misunderstanding and thank you for the patience.

dhrivnak I finally installed my OVMS with an H2o card and while texts seem to work fine the android app and GPRS does not seem to be working. The module is giving me 2 green flashes (GSM ready). When I send the text GPRS I get back
GPRS:
APN:att.mvno
User:
Password:
GSM:AT&T
GSM/GPRS: Not connected (0x0042)
I assume the GSM/GPRS: Not connected is an issue. I chatted with H2o wireless and he said their cards are for phones only and he was not able to help.
By any chance do you know what I may be doing wrong?
PS it shows my car is on Palo Alto area, far away from Tennessee.
I also received a message:
US0255 (my car id)
vehicle authentication failed (166.192.92.209)
I assume it is due to the GPRS issue.
Thank you

jimmyz80 What server address do you have it registering with? I had the same problem but discovered the documentation listed an IP address inconsistent with what you're actually supposed to use.
Jun 28, 2015
dhrivnak Here is what I have on the server command.
Server:
IP:54.243.136.230
Password:xxxxx

Thank you.

Marius Use your SIM card first in a standard phone and let it work on GPRS, propably you have a setup then and if everything works fine, install the SIM card in the OVMS module. Check if the dip switch in the module is set on GPRS active.
Jun 28, 2015
dhrivnak I double checked the dip switch (away from LEDs) and rebooted. I will try and find a GSM phone. Thanks.
Problem resolved. I was foolishly using the module password in place of the server password.
Jul 2, 2015
dhrivnak I had an annoying issue with the OVMS last night. The car detected a BMS isolation fault an issue that hits me 2-4 times a year and then goes away after a day or so. But the OVMS sent me over 50 text messages, one like every 10 seconds. I finally had to go down to the car and unplug the module? Is there a way to send a command to stop sending texts and/or to set it so it does not send so many duplicate messages? Thank you
Jul 2, 2015
Habious Another thing that would be nice is the ability to filter OUT certain messages (like, for example, I don't need my phone notifying me if "Key in switch door open" or "Fasten seatbelt")
Jul 2, 2015
Mark77a Agreed

Jul 2, 2015
markwj This happens if the car is flapping the alert message (e.g. alert "something wrong", ok all fine now, oh! alert "something wrong", ok all fine now, etc.).
You can suppress these vehicle alert messages by setting FEATURE_CARBITS (#14) to 8. Either SMS "FEATURE 14 8" or use the App.
Jul 2, 2015
dhrivnak Wonderful thank you Markwj. I assume that an SMS text to FEATURE 14 8 will stop the texts but I can see those messages in the app.
Jul 2, 2015
markwj Nope. That feature will stop the alerts.
To control whether notifications are delivered via sms or ip push, use PARAM_NOTIFIES. Set to "IP" for IP push notification, "SMS" for SMS notification, "SMS,IP" for both, or "-" for none.
Jul 3, 2015
dpeilow I seem to remember there was a separate document that comprehensively described how the ACC features worked. I printed it out about a year ago, but I've lost the printout and now I can't find it online either.
Can someone please point me to the link?

smorgasbord I have my OVMS settings for a standard charge on plugin.
I want a one time Range charge tonight. Can I just do that manually from the app, or will my ACC settings override that?
Jul 4, 2015
supersnoop If you start the charge manually, it should work. I had some trouble with my ACC cooldown causing problems when I came home, plugged in, and tried to start a range charge. The cooldown kept taking over.
If you want to schedule a range charge, you should probably disable ACC first.
Jul 30, 2015
dpeilow Which port numbers does the OVMS (Android) app use?
Aug 3, 2015
markwj tcp/6867 ("OVMS" on a touch-dial phone to make it easy to remember).
Aug 3, 2015
dpeilow Ah, that explains why it doesn't get through the firewall at work.
Aug 3, 2015
jaanton openvehicles.com website dead? I've tried to get to it from multiple computers to no avail.
Aug 3, 2015
NEWDL Same here!
Aug 3, 2015
markwj Sorry guys, server went down overnight (my time). It is back up now.
Aug 4, 2015
GVTesla In case someone else encounters the same problem:
the RS got serviced today, and 12V battery replaced. OVMS came back up nice and easy, but refused to show temperatures of motor, PEM and battery.
I simply disconnected the 'vga' connector and plugged it back in after a few seconds. OVMS unit rebooted and afterward everything was fine

Aug 4, 2015
markwj If that happens, try calling up the temperature display and the VDS, or going for a drive.
I think maybe co-incidence. The temperatures come from an uncommon bus message and sometimes you need to call up the display on the VDS for them to start correctly (particularly if the VMS has been rebooted).
Aug 5, 2015
dpeilow Any chance the app could revert to port 80/443 as a back up if the default one fails?
Aug 5, 2015
markwj Not easy. The server would have to be listening on those ports as well, but they aren't. Even if we switched to 80/443, the protocol is not HTTP/HTTPS so that probably wouldn't help if there is any effective upstream blocking/restrictions on outbound ports.
Aug 6, 2015
bpangburn I know several of us are using H2O Wireless $10 prepay SIM cards. Recently, I started getting a text after every txt to or from the OVMS module giving me my remaining balance. Has anyone else encountered this? Any way to turn that off? I didn't see anything on the H2O Wireless website to disable it.
Aug 6, 2015
Chillout Anyone interested in buying an OVMS unit from me, now my car is no longer mine?
Aug 6, 2015
AEdennis I set my notifications via IP and now get these "texts" as App messages.
Aug 6, 2015
bpangburn I should have been clearer, I'm experiencing the same thing. An app message generated for each SMS text sent or received.
Aug 6, 2015
dhrivnak By chance is anyone getting NUMEROUS text messages about the balance (on a credit car I do not own) is going up and down with charges that make no sense? I assume someone entered a wrong or old phone number.
Aug 6, 2015
markwj There is a function where the module will forward incoming SMS messages to you as PUSH notifications. Most likely the module is getting an incoming SMS message. I don't see any user-configurable way in the code to disable that.
Aug 21, 2015
skadax Tom, thanks so much for these instructions. I just switched over from AT&T to H2O as well and most everything seems to be working well. Only thing, I cannot figure out....text messages sent to the OVMS device don't seem to be forwarding to my phone by SMS or IP (via the app) even though the notification parameter is set to SMSIP. I'm trying to be able to see my account balance online at the H2O website and it seems that to add the phone number to the account I need to be able to enter a password that is sent via text and since the texts don't forward to my phone I have no way of seeing the password they are sending me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Aug 21, 2015
markwj Skadax, I think you're hitting the bug related to new users with iOS 8.4 and push notifications.
We have a version going through app store review at the moment, and about to be released as a beta release. If you want access to the beta (via test flight), send me a PM with your email address for the invite.
Aug 21, 2015
skadax Thx mark, PM sent
Aug 23, 2015
markwj Open beta went out, and almost 90 beta testers signed up. Looking good so far (both 64bit and the APNS notifications).
Aug 29, 2015
FANGO Will this update fix the problem I've been having of my ios6 iPad getting notifications but my ios8 iPhone not getting them? I set up ovms on the iPad first, then got the phone later, and have never gotten any notifications on the phone, only ever the iPad. If it were the other way around I would be fine. I have no idea how to start getting notifications to the phone, I have tried looking everywhere for settings.
So far I've only had one notification since getting the update, and it didn't go to the phone.
Aug 29, 2015
AEdennis Check MODULE? From your registered phone via SMS.
Notifications need to say IP to get it
The beta sends the response (if it's set to IP) to your app in 8.1. I run 6 on an iPod Touch and that's been working too.
Check thread for syntax on setting notifications (I have to search and don't remember off the top of my head)
Aug 29, 2015
FANGO It says IP, the notifications go through just fine to the iPad. The problem is they have never gone to the phone :-/
Aug 30, 2015
markwj v1.6.6 is out in the App store now. It should solve iOS v8.4+ notification subscription problems.
Those on the beta test version probably won't get auto-updated to this version. Just search OVMS in the store, and hit 'Get' to download latest version.
Sep 1, 2015
FANGO Well I didn't change anything, updated the app a few days ago and wasn't getting notifications, and all of a sudden today I got a notification on my phone. Yaaaaaaaayyy! Really excited for this since I leave to Europe soon so it will be nice to have my car let me know if anything strange happens. Thanks for whatever you did in the update to make it work!
Sep 11, 2015
NEWDL Thanks everyone for the hard work on this system. I was using another system and was plagued with issues. I am just starting out with OVMS but am very impressed so far.
I am very grateful!
Aug 8, 2016
simonog I have been using my OVMS for a year now, and have just run into an issue.
At home the car is set to charge in standard mode at 11.35 pm and works very well.
Today I needed to Range charge the car. When it had finished charging last night I sent the texts:
CHARGEMODE RANGE
CHARGESTART
Both commands were responded to positively.
A STAT a few moments later shows that Range charging has not actually happened:
05:20:26
Range - Charging Done
SOC: 85%
Ideal Range: 210 mi
Est. Range: 167 mi
ODO: 12,328.3 mi
CAC: 155.66
Shouldn't it charge to 100% or at least nearer to it? Do I need to clear the location stored entry before the separate commands will work on a one-off basis?
Aug 8, 2016
markwj This is most likely the issue. If you have an ACC location set, with ACC commands for that location, then that will take preference.
You can ACC DISABLE temporarily, then ACC ENABLE later.
Aug 8, 2016
bart513 Has anyone figured out the problem in the US with ATT etc? I'm needing a new SIM card. Thanks
and sorry if the info is somewhere else.
Aug 8, 2016
simonog I tried it yesterday while it was in the middle of charging on the location entry and it didn't work.
Now I've disabled it before it kicks off and tried and thank you, it works.
Aug 8, 2016
simonog Something seems to have happened to my OVMS box.
It was working fine on texts and on IP from the app.
For 2 days the app will not connect.
DIAG shows
DIAG:
RED Led:9
GRN Led:5
NET State:0x0042
12V Line:13.1 ref=11.5
Crashes:0
Looking in my manual, the red light only flashes up to 8 times. Is 9 a new condition?
The GRPS? response by the way is
GPRS:
APN:everywhere
User:eesecure
Password:secure
GSM:EE
GSM/GPRS: Not connected (0x0042)
Checking my account I have 500 MB of internet data left so it isn't that...
Anyone any thoughts please?
